3. Magic Three-Qubit Veldkamp Line and Veldkamp Space of the Doily

Abstract

A magic three-qubit Veldkamp line of $W(5,2)$, i.\,e. the line comprising a hyperbolic quadric $\mathcal{Q}^+(5,2)$, an elliptic quadric $\mathcal{Q}^-(5,2)$ and a quadratic cone $\widehat{\mathcal{Q}}(4,2)$ that share a parabolic quadric $\mathcal{Q}(4,2)$, the doily, is shown to provide an interesting model for the Veldkamp space of the latter. The model is based on the facts that: a) the 20 off-doily points of $\mathcal{Q}^+(5,2)$ form ten complementary pairs, each corresponding to a unique grid of the doily; b) the 12 off-doily points of $\mathcal{Q}^-(5,2)$ form six complementary pairs, each corresponding to a unique ovoid of the doily; and c) the 15 off-doily points of $\widehat{\mathcal{Q}}(4,2)$ -- disregarding the nucleus of $\mathcal{Q}(4,2)$ -- are in bijection with the 15 perp-sets of the doily. 8. Mermin pentagrams arising from Veldkamp lines for three qubits

Abstract

We study the geometry of the space of Mermin pentagrams, objects that are used to rule out the existence of noncontextual hidden variable theories as alternatives to quantum theory. It is shown that this space of 12096 possible pentagrams is organized into 1008 families, with each family containing a "double six" of pentagrams. The 1008 families are connected to a special set of Veldkamp lines in the Veldkamp space of three qubits an object well-known to finite geometers but has only been introduced to physics recently. Due to the transitive action of the symplectic group on this set of Veldkamp lines it is enough to study only one "canonical" double six configuration of pentagrams. We prove that the geometry of this double-six configuration is encapsulated in the weight diagram of the 20 dimensional irreducible representation of the group $SU(6)$. As an interesting by-product of our approach we show that Mermin pentagrams and a class of Mermin squares labelled by three qubit Pauli operators are inherently related. We conjecture that by studying the representation theoretic content of other Veldkamp lines of the Veldkamp space for $N$-qubits makes it possible to find new contextual configurations in a systematic manner., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. 21. Improved stability regions for ground states of the extended Hubbard model

Abstract

The ground state phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model containing nearest and next-to-nearest neighbor interactions is investigated in the thermodynamic limit using an exact method. It is found that taking into account local correlations and adding next-to-nearest neighbor interactions both have significant effects on the position of the phase boundaries. Improved stability domains for the $\eta$-pairing state and for the fully saturated ferromagnetic state at half filling have been constructed. 35. Microwave Resonance-Based Lab-on-a-Chip Local Pressure Sensing

Abstract

An expandable microfluidic component is integrated with a microwave resonator to allow in situ monitoring of pressure/flow rate changes in a microfluidic system. The resonator is a modified H-slot, which is etched into the ground plane of a microstrip transmission line. The microfluidic component is a circular reservoir with a flexible cover and specially designed inlet and outlet channels. The circular reservoir is placed in the near field of the resonator. The expansion of the reservoir cover depends on the pressure of the fluid that flows through the device. This leads to a frequency shift of the resonance, which is monitored by measuring the transmission parameter of the microstrip line. The design and fabrication procedures are discussed, and prototypes are presented. Electromagnetic and fluid-dynamic simulations are performed to determine the optimal geometry parameters of the device to achieve improved sensitivity for different scenarios. The performance of the device is demonstrated by filling the reservoir with distilled water and monitoring the pressure as a function of the liquid inflow. A sensor with a chamber radius of 3 mm and a cover height of 1.76 mm allows for the measurement of pressures ranging from 0 to 2 bar.

43. Socio-economic Implications of Banning Conventional Farrowing Crates in EU Pig Farming: A CAPRI-based Scenario Analysis.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the potential socio-economic implications of the European Commission's policy initiative to ban the use of cages in EU livestock farming, with a specific focus on conventional farrowing crates in the pig sector. Using the CAPRI (Common Agricultural Policy Regionalised Impact) tool, a multi-purpose comparative-static partial equilibrium modelling framework, the study examines two scenarios: an immediate phase-out of conventional farrowing crates by 2025 and a 10-year transition period until 2035. The simulation results indicate that the ban would lead to a significant decline in pork production in the EU, with production decreasing by 23.6% in the immediate phase-out scenario and by 8.4% in the 10-year transition scenario. The decline in production affects domestic demand and weakens the EU's net trade position. However, the ban would also result in an increase in consumer prices and producer prices for pork, partly moderating the decline in profits for the pig sector. Moreover, the study highlights the interconnectedness of agricultural policies and the importance of a global assessment of their impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The simultaneous decline in EU pork exports and increase in EU pork imports trigger emission leakage: while GHG emissions from EU pork production are significantly reduced, the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of non-EU pork production increases by 4.2%. We find that the length of the transition period fundamentally defines the potential economic effects on the EU pig industry, the impacts on trade balance, and on global environmental effects. This finding emphasises that the implementation details of policy initiatives must be carefully designed to address both domestic and foreign challenges arising from the sustainable transformation of livestock farming practices in the EU.
