IR spectroscopy provides a valuable tool for the characterisation and identification of interstellar molecular species. Here, we present 6-9 mum spectra of a sample of reflection nebulae, HII regions, YSOs, evolved stars and galaxies that show strong unidentified infrared bands, obtained with the SWS spectrograph on board ISO. The IR emission features in this wavelength region show pronounced variations. 1) The 6.2 mum feature shifts from 6.22 to 6.3 mum and clearly shows profile variations. 2) The 7.7 mum complex is comprised of at least two subpeaks peaking at 7.6 and one longwards of 7.7 mum. In some cases the main peak can apparently shift up to 8 mum. Two sources do not exhibit a 7.7 mum complex but instead show a broad emission feature at 8.22 mum. 3) The 8.6 mum feature has a symmetric profile in all sources and some sources exhibit this band at slightly longer wavelengths. For the 6.2, 7.7 and 8.6 mum features, the sources have been classified independently based on their profile and peak position. The classes derived for these features are directly linked with each other. Sources with a 6.2 mum feature peaking at similar to6.22 mum exhibit a 7.7 mum complex dominated by the 7.6 mum component. In contrast, sources with a 6.2 mum profile peaking longwards of 6.24 mum show a 7.7 mum complex with a dominant peak longwards of 7.7 mum and a 8.6 mum feature shifted toward the red. Furthermore, the observed 6-9 mum spectrum depends on the type of object. All ISM-like sources and a few PNe and Post-AGB stars belong to the first group while isolated Herbig AeBe stars, a few Post-AGB stars and most PNe belong to the second group. We summarise existing laboratory data and theoretical quantum chemical calculations of the modes emitting in this wavelength region of PAH molecules. We discuss the variations in peak position and profile in view of the exact nature of the carrier. We attribute the observed 6.2 mum profile and peak position to the combined effect of a PAH family and anharmonicity with pure PAHs representing the 6.3 mum component and substituted/complexed PAHs representing the 6.2 mum component. The 7.6 mum component is well reproduced by both pure and substituted/complexed PAHs but the 7.8 mum component remains an enigma. In addition, the exact identification of the 8.22 mum feature remains unknown. The observed variations in the characteristics of the IR emission bands are linked to the local physical conditions. Possible formation and evolution processes that may influence the interstellar PAH class are highlighted.

We have observed the central region of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4945 with the mid-infrared spectrometers SWS and PHT-S aboard ISO. We do not find any evidence for the existence of the powerful AGN, inferred from hard X-ray observations. The upper limits on our AGN tracers [Nev]14.32 mu m&24.3 mu m and [Ne VI] 7.65 mu m imply an A(V) >160 towards the NLR, assuming the NLR to be of equal strength as in the Circinus galaxy. Other possibilities are discussed. The starburst excitation indicators [Ne III] 15.56 mu m/[Ne II]12.81 mu m and L(bol)/L(lyc) suggest that the starburst in the central region is at least 5x10(6) yrs old, and that it accounts for at least half of the nuclear bolometric luminosity. The starburst might well power the entire bolometric luminosity, but the available constraints are also consistent with an up to 50% contribution of the embedded AGN. With PHT-S. at a resolution of approximate to 90, we detect strong absorption features of water ice, and, for the first time in an external galaxy, of CO(2) and CO. The same PI-ITS spectrum also reveals strong emission from the family of PAH features. Finally, we have observed and detected several pure rotational and re-vibrational H(2) lines, two of which, the (0-0) S(0) & S(1) lines, allow us to determine the excitation temperature (160 K) and warm H(2) mass (2.4 x 10(7) M.). The low excitation temperature shows Orion-like shocks not to be representative for the entire emission of the central region of the galaxy and fairly normal PDRs to be perhaps more typical.

We investigate the mid-infrared radiation of galaxies that are powered by a starburst or by an AGN. For this end, we compare the spectra obtained at different spatial scales in a sample of infrared bright galaxies. ISO observations which include emission of the nucleus as well as most of the host galaxy are compared with TIMMI2 spectra of the nuclear region. We find that ISO spectra are generally dominated by strong PAH bands. However, this is no longer true when inspecting the mid-infrared emission of the pure nucleus. Here PAH emission is detected in starbursts whereas it is significantly reduced or completely absent in AGNs. A physical explanation of these new observational results is presented by examining the temperature fluctuation of a PAH after interaction with a photon. It turns out that the hardness of the radiation field is a key parameter for quantifying the photo-destruction of small grains. Our theoretical study predicts PAH evaporation in soft X-ray environments. Radiative transfer calculations of clumpy starbursts and AGN corroborate the observational fact that PAH emission is connected to starburst activity whereas PAHs are destroyed near an AGN. The radiative transfer models predict for starbursts a much larger mid-infrared size than for AGN. This is confirmed by our TIMMI2 acquisition images: We find that the mid-infrared emission of Seyferts is dominated by a compact core while most of the starbursts are spatially resolved., Comment: 19 pages, 22 Figures, accepted by A&A

Observations of infrared fine-structure lines provide direct information on the metallicity and ionization structure of HII regions and indirectly on the hardness of the radiation field ionizing these nebulae. We have analyzed a sample of Galactic and Magellanic Cloud HII regions observed by the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) to examine the interplay between stellar content, metallicity and the ionization structure of HII regions. The observed [SIV]10.5/[SIII]18.7 mum and [NeIII]15.5/[NeII]12.8 mum line ratios are shown to be highly correlated over more than two orders of magnitude. We have compared the observed line ratios to the results of photoionization models using different stellar energy distributions. The derived characteristics of the ionizing star depend critically on the adopted stellar model as well as the (stellar) metallicity. We have compared the stellar effective temperatures derived from these model studies for a few well-studied HII regions with published direct spectroscopic determinations of the spectral type of the ionizing stars. This comparison supports our interpretation that stellar and nebular metallicity influences the observed infrared ionic line ratios. We can explain the observed increase in degree of ionization, as traced by the [SIV]\[SIII] and [NeIII]\[NeII] line ratios, by the hardening of the radiation field due to the decrease of metallicity.
