Despite the extensive reporting of versatile aggregation‐induced emission luminogens (AIEgens), boosting their molar extinction coefficient (MEC, ε ≈ 103–104 M−1cm−1) remains a formidable challenge, which poses a significant obstacle to achieving the ceiling of their output performance. In this work, an "aggrandizing absorption reservoir" approach is proposed to designing AIEgens with remarkable photons‐harvesting ability, ultimately enlarging its output performance in terms of short‐wave infrared (SWIR, 900–1700 nm) emission and photothermal effect. For the first time, the (bis‐(borondifluoride)‐8‐imidazodipyrromethene) (BOIMPY) unit, which provides sufficient rigidity and strong electron‐withdrawing ability by employing benzimidazole as a bridging ligand binding two BF2 units, is utilized to fabricate novel AIEgen (TPEB) that exhibits an ultrahigh MEC up to 1.29 × 105 M−1 cm−1 at 828 nm. To the best of knowledge, this is the highest MEC reported among AIEgens with near‐infrared absorption. Thanks to its remarkable photon‐harvesting ability, TPEB exhibits strong fluorescence in the SWIR region and a good photothermal effect. The as‐prepared TPEB NPs are successfully applied for SWIR imaging‐guided photothermal antitumor therapy. BackgroundEnamel is highly transparent at short wavelength infrared imaging (SWIR) wavelengths allowing the detection of dental decay without the need for ionizing radiation. The purpose of this study was to use SWIR imaging methods including cross polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT), occlusal transillumination (SWIR-OT), proximal transillumination (SWIR-PT), and occlusal reflectance (SWIR-R) to image interproximal lesions in vivo and compare the sensitivity with radiography.MethodsParticipants (n = 30) aged 18-80 each with a radiopositive interproximal lesion scheduled for restoration were enrolled in the study. Studies have shown that the opposing proximal surfaces across the contact will likely also have lesions. Stains produced by bacteria or those found in blood and food byproducts accumulate in highly porous caries lesions. They can interfere with accurate diagnosis and the selective removal of carious tissue during cavity preparations. Short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) imaging studies have shown that stain molecules do not absorb light beyond 1200 nm. The objective of this study was to image affected and infected dentin atSWIR wavelengths. Sections of 3 mm thickness were cut from the extracted teeth with deep dentinal lesions. The sound (normal), affected (stained), and infected (demineralized) dentin on each section were examined with reflected light at wavelengths from 400 to 1700 nm, red and green fluorescence, and with optical coherence tomography (OCT). Microcomputed tomography (microCT) was used to measure the mineral density at each location investigated. Significant (p < 0.05) differences were observed in the reflected light intensity at 400-850 nm and for fluorescence between the sound, affected, and infected dentin. SWIR imaging did not show significant reductions in reflectivity for the affected and infected dentin. SWIR images may be valuable for monitoring the lateral spread of dentinal lesions on the occlusal surfaces of teeth.

Multiplexed fluorescence in vivo imaging remains challenging due to the attenuation and scattering of visible and traditional near infrared (NIR‐I, 650–950 nm) wavelengths. Fluorescence imaging using shortwave infrared (SWIR, 1000–1700 nm, a.k.a. NIR‐II) light enables deeper tissue penetration due to reduced tissue scattering as well as minimal background autofluorescence. SWIR‐emitting semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with tunable emission peaks and optical stability are powerful contrast agents, yet few imaging demonstrations exclusively use SWIR emission beyond two‐color imaging schemes. In this study, we engineered three high quality lead sulfide/cadmium sulfide (PbS/CdS) core/shell QDs with distinct SWIR emission peaks ranging from 1100–1550 nm for simultaneous three‐color imaging in mice. We first use the exceptional photostability of QDs to non‐invasively track lymphatic drainage with longitudinal imaging, highlighting the detailed networks of lymphatic vessels with widefield imaging over a 2 hr period. We then perform multiplexed imaging with all three QDs to distinctly visualize the lymphatic system and spatially overlapping vasculature networks, including clearly distinguishing the liver and spleen. This work establishes optimized SWIR QDs for next generation multiplexed and longitudinal preclinical imaging, unlocking numerous opportunities for preclinical studies of disease progression, drug biodistribution, and cell trafficking dynamics in living organisms. The aim of this study was to develop a clinical SWIR reflectance handpiece to assess the activity of lesions on the occlusal surfaces. The time-resolved reflectivity of 10 active and 10 arrested occlusal caries lesions on extracted teeth was monitored at 1470 nm using a benchtop system and a modified clinical prototype during forced air drying. ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to use cross polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) and short wavelength infrared imaging (SWIR) reflectance imaging to monitor changes in the structure and activity of early occlusal caries on primary teeth over a period of 6 months during intervention with fluoride.MethodsParticipants (n = 29) aged 6-10 each with two suspected active occlusal lesions on primary teeth completed the study. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of a time-resolved reflectance imaging system employing a single photodetector to assess the activity of caries lesions that exploits the differential absorption of water at 1300 and 1950 nm. The time-resolved reflectivity of 10 active and 10 arrested lesions on the proximal surfaces and 5 active and 5 arrested lesions on the occlusal surfaces of extracted teeth were monitored simultaneously at 1300 and 1950 nm during forced air drying for 60 s. The presence of a highly mineralized surface zone measured with microcomputed tomography (microCT) was used to indicate lesion activity. Multiple kinetic parameters were extracted from the acquired short wavelength infrared (SWIR) intensity versus time dehydration curves and used to assess lesion activity. Differences in the reflectivity between curves acquired at 1300 and 1950 nm due to differential absorption of water provided improved discrimination between active and arrested lesions over the use of 1950 nm alone. This study demonstrates that it is feasible to use a device with a single photodetector operating at 1950 nm to collect dehydration curves for the assessment of lesion activity and that a system employing two SWIR wavelengths with differential water absorption can improve the performance of lesion activity assessment. Single‐molecule localization microscopy has proved promising to unravel the dynamics and molecular architecture of thin biological samples down to nanoscales. For applications in complex, thick biological tissues shifting single‐particle emission wavelengths to the shortwave infrared (SWIR also called NIR II) region between 900 to 2100 nm, where biological tissues are more transparent is key. To date, mainly single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) enable such applications, but they are inherently 1D objects. Here, 0D ultra‐small luminescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs, <3 nm) and ≈25 nm AuNC‐loaded‐polymeric particles that can be detected at the single‐particle level in the SWIR are presented. Thanks to high brightness and excellent photostability, it is shown that the dynamics of the spherical polymeric particles can be followed at the single‐particle level in solution at video rates for minutes. We compared single particle tracking of AuNC‐loaded‐polymeric particles with that of SWCNT diffusing in agarose gels demonstrating the specificity and complementarity of diffusion properties of these SWIR‐emitting nano‐objects when exploring a complex environment. This extends the library of photostable SWIR emitting nanomaterials to 0D nano‐objects of variable size for single‐molecule localization microscopy in the second biological window, opening unprecedented possibilities for mapping the structure and dynamics of complex biological systems. The aim of this clinical study was to compare the diagnostic performance of dual short wavelength infrared (SWIR) occlusal transillumination and reflectance multispectral imaging with conventional visual assessment and radiography for caries detection on premolars scheduled for extraction for orthodontics reasons. Polarized light microscopy (PLM) and micro-computed tomography (microCT) performed after tooth extraction were used as gold standards. The custom-fabricated imaging probe was 3D-printed and the imaging system employed a SWIR camera and fiber-optic light sources emitting light at 1300 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600 nm for reflectance measurements. Teeth (n = 135) on 40 test subjects were imaged in vivo using the SWIR imaging prototype in the study and teeth were extracted after imaging. Our study demonstrates for the first time that near-simultaneous real-time transillumination and reflectance video can be successfully acquired for caries detection. Both SWIR imaging modalities had markedly higher sensitivity for lesions on proximal and occlusal surfaces compared to conventional methods (visual and radiographic). Reflectance imaging at 1600 nm had higher sensitivity and specificity than transillumination at 1300 nm. The combined SWIR methods yielded higher specificity but the combined sensitivity was lower than for each individual method.

High-performance germanium (Ge) lateral PIN photodetector (PD) arrays for short wave infrared (SWIR) imaging based on Ge-on-insulator (GOI) platform was proposed and demonstrated. The high-quality GOI platform with top-Ge layer thickness of 1.25 μ m and threading dislocation density of less than 105 cm−2 was prepared by using bonding and smart-cut technology. P -type and N -type regions with centrosymmetric racetrack shapes were introduced to lower the sidewall electric field and suppress the surface leakage current of the PD. Benefiting from the high-quality of the GOI platform and the unique design of lateral active regions, a low dark current of 2 nA under −1 V with outstanding rectification ratio of 2.1 × 106 were obtained at room temperature. Through constructing a vertical resonant cavity by SiO2 passivation layer and the Si/SiO2 substrate, the responsivity at 1550 nm was enhanced to 0.46 A W−1 with a high specific detectivity of 3.09 × 1010cm·Hz1/2 ·W−1 under −1 V. Ultimately, SWIR imaging was demonstrated by a Ge lateral PIN PD line array with 1 × 8 pixels under zero bias at room temperature. Imaging tools are crucial for studying the vascular network and its barrier function in various physiopathological conditions. Shortwave infrared (SWIR) window optical imaging allows noninvasive, in-depth exploration. We applied SWIR imaging, combined with vessel segmentation and deep learning analyses, to study real-time dextran probe extravasation in mice experiencing intermittent hypoxia (IH)—a characteristic of obstructive sleep apnea associated with potential cardiovascular alterations due to early vascular permeability. Evidence for permeability in this context is limited, making our investigation significant. C57Bl/6 mice were exposed to normoxia or intermittent hypoxia for 14 days. Then SWIR imaging between 1,250 and 1,700 nm was performed on the saphenous artery and vein and on the surrounding tissue after intravenous injection of labeled dextrans of two different sizes (10 or 70 kDa). Postprocessing and segmentation of the SWIR images were conducted using deep learning treatment. We monitored high-resolution signals, distinguishing arteries, veins, and surrounding tissues. In the saphenous artery and vein, after 70-kD dextran injection, tissue/vessel ratio was higher after intermittent hypoxia (IH) than normoxia (N) over 500 seconds (P < 0.05). However, the ratio was similar in N and IH after 10-kD dextran injection. The SWIR imaging technique allows noninvasive, real-time monitoring of dextran extravasation in vivo. Dextran 70 extravasation is increased after exposure to IH, suggesting an increased vessel permeability in this mice model of obstructive sleep apnea. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: We demonstrate that SWIR imaging technique is a useful tool to monitor real-time dextran extravasation from vessels in vivo, with a high resolution. We have developed a clinical probe capable of acquiring simultaneous, multispectral short wavelength infrared (SWIR) reflectance and occlusal transillumination images of lesions on tooth proximal and occlusal surfaces to reduce the potential of false positives and enhance diagnosis. The dual probe was 3D printed and the imaging system uses an InGaAs camera and broadband light sources at 1310 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600 nm for cross-polarization reflectance measurements. In this study a mathematical model to estimate the penetration depth of "hidden" occlusal lesions from the SWIR images was developed. We compared the model's estimated lesion depth on 18 extracted teeth with lesions against microCT measurements. Although the model estimated depth deviates from that measured in microCT at higher depths, there is a good linear correlation (R2 = 0.93) between the estimated depth from SWIR images and the measured depth using microCT. SWIR occlusal transillumination images at 1300 nm also provide information about interproximal lesion penetration depth which can be directly viewed from the occlusal surface. SWIR occlusal transillumination and reflectance depth measurements on 49 natural interproximal lesions were compared with microCT measurements. There was significant correlation between the depths measured with SWIR occlusal transillumination (R2 = 0.81) and reflectance (R2 = 0.19) compared with the depths measured with microCT.

The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of dual short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) transillumination and reflectance multispectral imaging devices for imaging interproximal lesions with radiography using extracted teeth that had been imaged with micro-computed tomography (microCT). Thirty-six extracted teeth with 67 lesions on the proximal surfaces were imaged using a newly fabricated SWIR multispectral proximal transillumination and reflectance imaging device along with an existing SWIR multispectral occlusal transillumination and reflectance device. The ability of SWIR imaging and radiography to detect lesions and accurately assess lesion dimensions were compared using microCT as a standard. Occlusal and proximal transillumination and occlusal reflectance performed best for imaging interproximal lesions while proximal reflectance was not useful for imaging interproximal lesions from tooth buccal and lingual surfaces. There was high correlation of the lesion dimensions measured in occlusal and proximal transillumination images compared to microCT and moderate correlation in occlusal reflectance images. The correlation between the lesion depth measured in radiographs and the lesion depth measured with microCT was not significant. This study demonstrates that SWIR occlusal and proximal transillumination and SWIR occlusal reflectance images are useful for imaging interproximal lesions and they provide more accurate measurements of lesion severity.

Background and objectivesPrevious studies have shown that large changes in the diffuse reflectivity of caries lesions during drying with air can be used to assess lesion activity. The largest changes occur at short wavelength infrared (SWIR) wavelengths coincident with high water absorption. The strongest water absorption in the SWIR occurs at 1950 nm. In this study changes in the reflectivity of simulated lesions with varying degrees of remineralization was measured at 1500-2340 nm and at 1950 nm as the samples were dried with air.Study design/materials and methodsTwenty bovine enamel surfaces each with five treatment windows were exposed to two demineralization/remineralization regimens to produce simulated lesions of varying depth, severity, and mineral gradients. An extended range tungsten-halogen lamp with a long pass filter (1500-2340 nm) and a broadband amplified spontaneous emission source centered near the peak of the water-absorption band at 1950-nm were used as light sources and an extended range InGaAs camera (1000-2340 nm) was used to acquire reflected light images as the samples were dried with air. Lesions were also assessed using digital microscopy, polarized light microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and transverse microradiography.ResultsBoth wavelength ranges showed extremely high lesion contrast (>0.9) for all six lesion treatment windows in both models. The change in contrast (ΔI) was significantly higher for the 1950 nm broadband source for all the intact lesion windows compared with the 1500-2340 nm wavelength range.ConclusionSWIR light at 1950 nm yields extremely high contrast of demineralization and appears to be the optimum wavelength for the assessment of lesion activity on tooth coronal surfaces. Intraoral imaging of teeth with SWIR light provides increased contrast of dental caries and restorative materials compared to visible inspection and digital radiography. The objective of this study was to investigate the SWIR optical properties of the dental pulp-chamber floor, walls and canal orifices. We imaged in vitro extracted human posterior teeth at 1300-nm and 1500-1700-nm in reflectance and transillumination and compared the tissues properties with visible light images and quantitative light fluorescence. Transillumination of posterior teeth at both 1300-nm and 1500-1700-nm yielded significantly higher contrast between the pulp-chamber floor and walls than all other methods tested.

We have developed a clinical probe capable of acquiring simultaneous short wavelength infrared (SWIR) cross-polarized reflectance and occlusal transillumination images of lesions on tooth proximal and occlusal surfaces. We hypothesize that the dual SWIR reflectance and transillumination probe will improve the diagnostic accuracy of the device by reducing false positives since it is unlikely that confounding structural features or specular reflection are going to be present in both reflectance and transillumination images. In addition, the dual probe will provide complementary diagnostic information about lesion severity to help discriminate early superficial lesions on tooth surfaces from deeply penetrating lesions. The dual probe was 3D printed and equipped with a compact InGaAs camera and broadband superluminescent diode light sources that emit broadband light at 1300 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600 nm light for cross-polarization reflectance measurements. The first clinical images acquired using this novel probe are presented.

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging has significant advantages in challenging propagation conditions where the effectiveness of visible-light and thermal imaging is limited. Object tracking in SWIR imaging is particularly difficult due to lack of color information, but also because of occlusions and maneuvers of the tracked object. This paper proposes a new algorithm for object tracking in SWIR imaging, using a kernelized correlation filter (KCF) as a basic tracker. To overcome occlusions, the paper proposes the use of the Kalman filter as a predictor and a method to expand the object search area. Expanding the object search area helps in better re-detection of the object after occlusion, but also leads to the occasional appearance of errors in measurement data that can lead to object loss. These errors can be treated as outliers. To cope with outliers, Huber’s M-robust approach is applied, so this paper proposes robustification of the Kalman filter by introducing a nonlinear Huber’s influence function in the Kalman filter estimation step. However, robustness to outliers comes at the cost of reduced estimator efficiency. To make a balance between desired estimator efficiency and resistance to outliers, a new adaptive M-robustified Kalman filter is proposed. This is achieved by adjusting the saturation threshold of the influence function using the detection confidence information from the basic KCF tracker. Experimental results on the created dataset of SWIR video sequences indicate that the proposed algorithm achieves a better performance than state-of-the-art trackers in tracking the maneuvering object in the presence of occlusions.

Monolithically integrated pixels, with stacked PbS colloidal quantum dot (CQD) photodiodes and organic blocking diodes, are developed as the building block for constructing a short‐wavelength infrared (SWIR) crossbar imaging array. Arising from the back‐to‐back stacked configuration and a favorable energy level alignment, holes are blocked from the photodiode at zero and forward biases, which results in the normally‐OFF behavior of the pixels. Based on such device characteristics, the monolithically integrated pixels can effectively suppress electrical crosstalk under illumination in the crossbar array and consume nearly zero standby power. Furthermore, an 8×8 crossbar imaging array with both high imaging quality and low power consumption is achieved, which features as a high‐performance visible–SWIR imaging sensor. New imaging technologies are needed for the clinical assessment of lesions on root surfaces. It is not sufficient to simply detect caries lesions; methods are needed to assess lesion depth, structural composition and activity to determine if chemical intervention has the potential to be effective and if remineralization has occurred. Lesions were monitored using CP-OCT during lesion dehydration to assess the lesion structure and any shrinkage. Thermal imaging at 6-10 μm wavelengths and short wavelength-IR imaging at 1450-1750-nm were used to monitor thermal emission during lesion dehydration to assess lesion activity. Imaging probes were custom fabricated for clinical use. We present the first clinical results of a small feasibility study employing CP-OCT, thermal and SWIR imaging to assess lesion activity in vivo on thirty test subjects with suspected root caries lesions.

Near Infrared Reflectance (NIR) is a new imaging technology that detects dental caries (decay) on tooth occlusal surfaces and in the interproximal contact sites between teeth. Conventional techniques, mostly dental x-rays, do not provide the high sensitivity and specificity at the vulnerable pits and fissure regions. The contrast of demineralization on tooth surfaces changes with increasing severity and the magnitude of that change with depth depends on the wavelength. The purpose of this study is to determine how the contrast changes with depth as a function of wavelength. Demineralization of varying depth was produced in 1.5 × 1.5 mm exposed windows after 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 days of exposure to a demineralizing solution at pH 4.5. Lesions were imaged at 405, 630, 850, 1300, 1460, 1535, 1675, and 1950-nm with multiple imaging systems. The highest lesion contrast was measured at 1950-nm.

Selective removal of dental calculus with high precision is best accomplished using lasers operating at high pulse repetition rates focused to a small spot size to limit damage to sound tissues. Conventional flash-lamp pumped Er:YAG lasers are poorly suited for this purpose, but new diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) Er:YAG lasers have become available operating at high pulse repetition rates. The purpose of this study was to determine if image-guided laser ablation can be used to selectively remove calculus from tooth surfaces with minimal damage to the underlying sound cementum and dentin. A DPSS Er:YAG laser system was used to selectively remove calculus from ten extracted teeth using sequential SWIR images at 1500-1750-nm. The selectivity of removal was assessed using digital microscopy and optical coherence tomography. Calculus was removed with minimal damage to the underlying sound cementum and dentin.

Short wave infrared (SWIR) imaging has been used in various applications such as electronic board inspection, surveillance and gas detection. Unlike the conventional compound semiconductor focal plane array (FPA), in this work group IV back-illuminated imaging array with 320 $\times256$ pixels was demonstrated. For reference device with a diameter of 30 $\mu \text{m}$ , the dark current was 9.7 nA at 0 V. At 1550 nm, a responsivity of 0.61 A/W was obtained at −1 V using a Ge photodetector with a diameter of 75 $\mu \text{m}$. The image of a halogen lamp was successfully captured at room temperature with a pixel operating bias of 0 V. SWIR imaging bears considerable advantages over visible-light (color) and thermal images in certain challenging propagation conditions. Thus, the SWIR imaging channel is frequently used in multi-spectral imaging systems (MSIS) for long-range surveillance in combination with color and thermal imaging to improve the probability of correct operation in various day, night and climate conditions. Integration of deep-learning (DL)-based real-time object detection in MSIS enables an increase in efficient utilization for complex long-range surveillance solutions such as border or critical assets control. Unfortunately, a lack of datasets for DL-based object detection models training for the SWIR channel limits their performance. To overcome this, by using the MSIS setting we propose a new cross-spectral automatic data annotation methodology for SWIR channel training dataset creation, in which the visible-light channel provides a source for detecting object types and bounding boxes which are then transformed to the SWIR channel. A mathematical image transformation that overcomes differences between the SWIR and color channel and their image distortion effects for various magnifications are explained in detail. With the proposed cross-spectral methodology, the goal of the paper is to improve object detection in SWIR images captured in challenging outdoor scenes. Experimental tests for two object types (cars and persons) using a state-of-the-art YOLOX model demonstrate that retraining with the proposed automatic cross-spectrally created SWIR image dataset significantly improves average detection precision. This article represents the first foray into investigating the consequences of various material combinations on the short-wave infrared (SWIR, 1000-2000 nm) performance of Tm-based core-shell nanocrystals (NCs) above 1600 nm. In total, six different material combinations involving two different types of SWIR-emitting core NCs (α-NaTmF 4 and LiTmF 4 ) combined with three different protecting shell materials (α-NaYF 4 , CaF 2 , and LiYF 4 ) have been synthesized. All corresponding homo- and heterostructured NCs have been meticulously characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy techniques. The latter revealed that out of the six investigated combinations, only one led to the formation of a true core-shell structure with well-segregated core and shell domains. The direct correlation between the downshifting performance and the spatial localization of Tm 3+ ions within the final homo- and heterostructured NCs is established. Interestingly, to achieve the best SWIR performance, the formation of an abrupt interface is not a prerequisite, while the existence of a pure (even thin) protective shell is vital. Remarkably, although all homo- and heterostructured NCs have been synthesized under the exact same experimental conditions, Tm 3+ SWIR emission is either fully quenched or highly efficient depending on the type of material combination. The most efficient combination (LiTmF 4 /LiYF 4 ) achieved a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 39% for SWIR emission above 1600 nm (excitation power density in the range 0.5-3 W/cm 2 ) despite significant intermixing. From now on, highly efficient SWIR-emitting probes with an emission above 1600 nm are within reach to unlock the full potential of in vivo SWIR imaging.

In this paper, a fast frequency upconversion imaging based on quasi-phase match is proposed. A function based on the quasi phase-match of two acquired images within 3dB width is formulated to evaluate the maximum step size of the nonlinear crystal temperature for each acquisition. The measurement time is reduced by acquiring images at these specific temperatures. The integration time of each frame is reassigned to improve the signal noise ratio of the acquired images. Comparing scanning the object with the total measurement time of 44 minutes for a target area with 7mm diameter, our method reaches 12 minutes with just 6 measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent availability of imaging sensors able to work in accumulation mode in the SWIR spectral range allows the realization of new efficient range-gated viewing systems. Such systems relax the illumination constraint so that the energy required to build an image can be distributed over several laser pulses. Semiconductor or fiber lasers can be used instead of high peak power solid state lasers. Such a system was realized in our laboratory, tested, and compared to a more classical flash system under outdoor conditions. In a first step, images of the same scenes recorded in the same weather conditions were compared to those recorded with a classical system working in flash mode. The MTF analysis shows an improvement of up to 40% with the system working in accumulation mode. In order to remove the influence of two different laser sources as well as of two different cameras, a second experiment was conducted. For this purpose, a shorter range and only one system were employed. Both operating modes, the flash and the accumulation mode, were examined. The second experiment confirms that accumulation mode can decrease significantly the value of the scintillation index resulting in a higher resistance to optical perturbations. Background: The sustainable management of agricultural resources requires the integration of cutting‐edge science with the observation and identification of crops. This assists experts to make correct decisions. The aim of this study is to assess the robustness of a commonly used deep learning tool, VGG16, in improving the categorization of wheat kernels. Two fusion methodologies were considered simultaneously. We performed experiments on visible light (RGB), short wave infrared (SWIR), and visible‐near infrared (VNIR) datasets, including 40 classes, with 200 samples in each class, giving 8000 samples in total. Results: After making simulations with 6400 training and 1600 testing samples, we achieved excellent performance scores, with 98.19% and 100% accuracy rates, respectively. Conclusion: The wheat identification system developed here serves as an effective identification framework and supports the view that deep learning tools can adequately discriminate between different types of wheat kernels. The use of visible/NIR-emitting gold nanoclusters (Au NCs), previously proposed for in vivo imaging, has been limited to some extent by low quantum yields (QYs) and the limited penetration of visible light in tissue. Here we report short wavelength infrared (SWIR, λ = 1-2 μm) emitting Au NCs with a good photoluminescence QY for this wavelength range (0.6% to 3.8% for λem = 1000 to 900 nm) and excellent stability under physiological conditions. We show that surface ligand chemistry is critical to achieving these properties. We demonstrate the potential of these SWIR-emitting Au NCs for in vivo imaging in mice. The Au NCs have a hydrodynamic diameter that is small (∼5 nm) enough that they exhibit a rapid renal clearance, and images taken in the SWIR region show better resolution of the blood vessels than in the NIR region. We realized two PbS colloidal quantum dot (CQD) based Schottky photodetectors, formed of indium tin oxide anode, the photosensitive PbS layer, and a Schottky contacts of titanium-gold (Ti-Au) stack for higher longer lifetime and aluminum (Al) for higher responsivity. Long capping ligands of PbS QDs were replaced with shorter ones and layer-by-layer deposition method was applied to form pinhole-free and uniform PbS CQD films, enabling better responsivity and longer lifetime. In Al/PbS, under 2 V reverse bias and 5 mW/cm2 illumination at 1550 nm, 0.195 A/W responsivity, 15.6% quantum efficiency, and 8.19 ×1010 Jones normalized detectivity is achieved. In Au-Ti/PbS, under 3 V reverse bias and 5 mW/cm2 illumination, 0.667 A/W responsivity, 53.3% quantum efficiency, and 2.12 ×1010 Jones normalized detectivity is achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract: In this work, PbS colloidal quantum dot based photodiodes are realized compatible for the integration on ROIC''s. Schottky photodiode architecture is selected for its fast response and moderate sensitivity. The device is formed from Indium tin oxide (ITO) anode, the photosensitive PbS layer and a schottky contact formed of titanium and gold. Pinhole-free uniform PbS quantum dots film achieved by optimized layer by layer spin coating process. Solid-state ligand change procedure applied during film coating using 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) in order to remove long oleic acid ligand that degrades electron mobility in the film. Fabricated detectors achieved rectification ratios of 15 at +/- 1V bias. Preliminary tests show a responsivity of 0.24 A/W is achieved. Specific detectivity D* is calculated as 3,54x1010 that is limited due to high dark currents. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The nonlinear frequency upconversion with the tight focused pump beam based on photon counting and Hadamard coding is presented to acquire low noise converted images. The pump beam is optimized by tight focusing to enhance its power density in nonlinear crystal. In order to reduce the distortion caused by the point spread function effect, the object is encoded by measurement matrices and the converted photons corresponding to each pattern is measured. Thus the converted image with sharp edges can be reconstructed by the measurements and the measurement matrices. The time-gated detection is applied to increase the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of the measurements. The experimental results show the peak of the dark noise is less than 0.34 photons/spatial/s element for an image with 64 × 64 pixels by taking into account 10 ms measurement time for each pattern. Compared with the converted image reconstructed by the measurements of the photomultiplier tube(PMT) directly, the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of photon counting image increases about 30.91 %. Dental fluorosis is an increasing problem in the U.S. due to excessive exposure to fluoride from the environment. Fluorosis causes hypomineralization of the enamel during tooth development and mild fluorosis is visible as faint white lines on the tooth surface while the most severe fluorosis can result in pitted surfaces. It is difficult to differentiate lesions due to fluorosis from those due to caries. Dental fluorosis appears with extremely high contrast at short wavelength infrared (SWIR) wavelengths of 1450 and 1960 nm coincident with higher water absorption. In this study reflectance measurements at 1450 and 1950 nm were used to monitor the dehydration dynamics of lesions due to fluorosis on extracted teeth. The dehydration dynamics were compared with the lesion structure that was measured with microCT. Sixteen extracted teeth with suspected fluorosis were imaged and microCT showed that the mean surface zone thickness was 118 ± 30 μm and the lesion depth was 284 ± 105 μm for the areas of fluorosis investigated. The dehydration dynamics of lesions due to fluorosis appeared most similar to those of arrested caries lesions. There was no significant correlation (P >0.05) of the intensity change and rate of the intensity change at 1450 or 1950 nm with either the lesion surface zone thickness or the lesion depth.

We have developed a clinical probe capable of acquiring simultaneous, multispectral short wavelength infrared (SWIR) reflectance and occlusal transillumination images of lesions on tooth proximal and occlusal surfaces to reduce the potential of false positives and enhance diagnosis. The dual probe was 3D printed and the imaging system uses an InGaAs camera and broadband light sources at 1310 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600 nm for cross-polarization reflectance measurements. In this study a mathematical model to estimate the penetration depth of "hidden" occlusal lesions from the SWIR images was developed. We compared the model's estimated lesion depth on 18 extracted teeth with lesions against microCT measurements. Although the model estimated depth deviates from that measured in microCT at higher depths, there is a good linear correlation (R 2 = 0.93) between the estimated depth from SWIR images and the measured depth using microCT. SWIR occlusal transillumination images at 1300 nm also provide information about interproximal lesion penetration depth which can be directly viewed from the occlusal surface. SWIR occlusal transillumination and reflectance depth measurements on 49 natural interproximal lesions were compared with microCT measurements. There was significant correlation between the depths measured with SWIR occlusal transillumination (R 2 = 0.81) and reflectance (R 2 = 0.19) compared with the depths measured with microCT.

Previous studies have shown that optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be used to show the formation of a transparent surface zone on caries lesions indicative of remineralization. Studies have also shown that monitoring changes in the diffuse reflectivity of caries lesions during drying with air can be used to assess lesion activity and that the largest changes occur at SWIR wavelengths coincident with high water absorption at 1450 and 1950 nm. The purpose of this study was to determine when remineralization has occurred by monitoring changes in SWIR reflectance measurements and OCT images of simulated lesions over an extended time period during exposure to a remineralization solution. Eight bovine enamel surfaces each with two treatment windows were exposed to a pH cycling regimen to produce simulated lesions 50-100 μm deep. OCT at 1310 nm was used to image the samples at each time point. An extended range tungsten halogen lamp with a 1450 nm band pass filter and a broadband amplified spontaneous emission source centered near the peak of the water-absorption band at 1950 nm were used as light sources. An extended range InGaAs camera (1000-2340 nm) was used to acquire reflected light images as the samples were dried with air. After 32 days of exposure to the remineralization solution there were no further changes to the samples suggesting they had been completely arrested.

Dental fluorosis appears with very high contrast at short wavelength infrared (SWIR) wavelengths beyond 1400-nm and we hypothesize that these wavelengths may be better suited for detecting mild fluorosis and for estimating the severity. In this study the contrast of fluorosis of varying severity on extracted human permanent teeth was measured at SWIR wavelengths ranging from 1300-2000-nm using an extended range InGaAs camera and broadband light sources. Cross polarization optical coherence tomography was used to measure the depth of hypomineralization.

Intraoral imaging of teeth with SWIR light provides increased contrast of dental caries and restorative materials compared to visible inspection and digital radiography. The objective of this study was to investigate the SWIR optical properties of the dental pulp-chamber floor, walls and canal orifices. We imaged in vitro extracted human posterior teeth at 1300-nm and 1500-1700-nm in reflectance and transillumination and compared the tissues properties with visible light images and quantitative light fluorescence. Transillumination of posterior teeth at both 1300-nm and 1500-1700-nm yielded significantly higher contrast between the pulp-chamber floor and walls than all other methods tested.

Several studies have demonstrated the potential of short wavelength infrared (SWIR) reflectance, thermal imaging and optical coherence tomography for the nondestructive assessment of the activity of caries lesions. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the activity of arrested caries lesions on the coronal surfaces of extracted teeth would be changed by reducing the thickness of the highly mineralized transparent surface layer, which was measured using polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT). The lesion activity was assessed using SWIR reflectance and thermal imaging during forced air drying of the lesion before and after mechanical removal of a surface layer ~ 50-μm thick covering the lesion. Both the intensity change in SWIR reflectance images at 1500-1750-nm wavelengths after drying the lesions and the change in thermal emission measured with a thermal camera at 8-13-μm wavelengths increased significantly (P<0.05) after reducing the thickness of the mineralized surface layer in the lesions indicating the permeability of the lesion to fluids increased. These results provide further evidence that the presence of a highly mineralized outer surface layer is a key indicator of lesion arrest.

Changes in the reflectivity of lesions on the proximal surfaces of extracted human teeth were measured at SWIR wavelengths from 1300-2000 nm as they were dried with air to assess lesion activity. An extended range tungsten-halogen lamp with bandpass filters of varying wavelength (bandwidth) 1300 nm (90), 1460 nm (85), 1535 nm (80), and 1675 nm (90) along with a broadband ASE source centered near the peak of the water-absorption band at 1950-nm were used as light sources and an extended range InGaAs camera (1000-2340 nm) was used to acquire reflected light images as the samples were dried with air. MicroCT images were used as a gold standard for comparison. SWIR light at 1950 nm yields extremely high contrast of demineralization and appears to be the optimum wavelength for the assessment of lesion activity on tooth coronal surfaces.

We have developed a clinical probe capable of acquiring simultaneous short wavelength infrared (SWIR) cross-polarized reflectance and occlusal transillumination images of lesions on tooth proximal and occlusal surfaces. We hypothesize that the dual SWIR reflectance and transillumination probe will improve the diagnostic accuracy of the device by reducing false positives since it is unlikely that confounding structural features or specular reflection are going to be present in both reflectance and transillumination images. In addition, the dual probe will provide complementary diagnostic information about lesion severity to help discriminate early superficial lesions on tooth surfaces from deeply penetrating lesions. The dual probe was 3D printed and equipped with a compact InGaAs camera and broadband superluminescent diode light sources that emit broadband light at 1300 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600 nm light for cross-polarization reflectance measurements. The first clinical images acquired using this novel probe are presented.

New imaging technologies are needed for the clinical assessment of lesions on root surfaces. It is not sufficient to simply detect caries lesions; methods are needed to assess lesion depth, structural composition and activity to determine if chemical intervention has the potential to be effective and if remineralization has occurred. Lesions were monitored using CP-OCT during lesion dehydration to assess the lesion structure and any shrinkage. Thermal imaging at 6-10 μ m wavelengths and short wavelength-IR imaging at 1450-1750-nm were used to monitor thermal emission during lesion dehydration to assess lesion activity. Imaging probes were custom fabricated for clinical use. We present the first clinical results of a small feasibility study employing CP-OCT, thermal and SWIR imaging to assess lesion activity in vivo on thirty test subjects with suspected root caries lesions.
