The escape dynamics of sticky particles from textured surfaces is poorly understood despite importance to various scientific and technological domains. In this work, we address this challenge by investigating the escape time of adsorbates from prevalent surface topographies, including holes/pits, pillars, and grooves. Analytical expressions for the probability density function and the mean of the escape time are derived. A particularly interesting scenario is that of very deep and narrow confining spaces within the surface. In this case, the joint effect of the entrapment and stickiness prolongs the escape time, resulting in an effective desorption rate that is dramatically lower than that of the untextured surface. This rate is shown to abide a universal scaling law, which couples the equilibrium constants of adsorption with the relevant confining length scales. While our results are analytical and exact, we also present an approximation for deep and narrow cavities based on an effective description of one-dimensional diffusion that is punctuated by motionless adsorption events. This simple and physically motivated approximation provides high-accuracy predictions within its range of validity and works relatively well even for cavities of intermediate depth. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of aging on the fracture load (Lf) and reliability of glass- ceramics a;er different etching protocols. Materials and Methods: Specimens were fabricated and divided according to the etching Ame (10% hydrofluoric acid [HF] for 20 seconds, 40 seconds, and 60 seconds). Etched surfaces were examined under microscopy. The ceramics were resin-cemented to a denAn analog material. Samples were split into two groups (n = 20 each) and tested a;er 24 hours (I) or stored in 37°C water for 1 year (A). A compressive load (0.1 mm/minute) was applied to the samples unAl failure was detected by acoustic emission. The influence of aging on the Lf was tested by two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = .05). The characterisAc fracture load (L0) and Weibull modulus (m) values were calculated. Results: Lithium silicate (LS) etching for 20 seconds resulted in the highest immediate Lf, which was significantly decreased a;er aging (P ≤ .05). Water storage had no effect on the Lf of glass- ceramic etched for 40 and 60 seconds (P > .05). For lithium disilicate (LD), the etching Ame had no significant effect on the immediate or aged Lf (P > .05). The Lf was significantly reduced a;er aging (A) for LD (P ≤ .05). Radial cracks were the predominant failure mode. Surface topography was more regular a;er lower etching Ames for LD and a;er higher Ames for LS. Conclusions: After 1 year of water-assisted aging, the evaluated etching Ames had no influence on the load-bearing capacity and structural reliability of resin-bonded glass- ceramics. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of simulated gastric acid solution (SGAS) and resin cement composition on the shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia-based materials with different levels of translucency to composite resin. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 medium-opacity (MO; 3Y-TZP) and 40 medium-translucency (MT; 4Y-PSZ) zirconia slabs were distributed into four groups according to the composition of the resin luting system (MDP free or with MDP [primer + Panavia V5]) and storage method (distilled water or SGAS [5% hydrochloric acid]). Composite resin cylinders were cemented on the zirconia surface and stored for 91 hours. SBS, failure mode, and surface characterization analyses via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were performed. SBS data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey tests, and failure mode was assessed using one-way ANOVA (P < .05). Results: Storage media (P = .180), resin cement (P = .110), zirconia (P = .404), and their interactions did not affect SBS values. Bond strength ranged from 21.41 to 26.11 MPa. SEM images showed that SGAS modified the surface topography of zirconia and resin cement. The presence of chlorine and silicon (wt%) were higher after SGAS storage than after water storage in both cements used, while barium was higher only for the MDP cement. There was a prevalence of mixed failures for most of the groups. Conclusions: The SBS between both types of zirconia and resin cement was not affected by SGAS, although changes in zirconia topography were observed after SGAS exposure. The present study aimed to improve and assess the electrical discharge coating (EDC) factors with aluminium 7075 alloy as a substrate. The results of input variables like current, composition, and compaction load on EDC responses, including material deposition rate (MDR), tool wear rate (TWR), and surface roughness (Ra) were studied. Taguchi's L9 experiment design was employed with GRA (grey relational analysis), ARAS (Additive Ratio Assessment), and preference value (Ki) was measured. The experiments determined the best parametric setting for more MDR, less TWR, and less Ra. The level of contribution of the process parameters to the response was evaluated by a statistical test known as ANOVA, wherein current appeared as the most noteworthy parameter, followed by composition and compaction load. The results of GRA and ARAS were compared with a prominent MCDM method known as TOPSIS, which substantiated the outcomes of both methods. Successfully attained rates for material deposition, tool wear, and average surface roughness were 0.385 mg/min for material, 4.37 mg/min for tool wear, and 2.101 µm for surface roughness. Finally, a sensitivity study is used to validate the hybrid model's constancy with a strong correlation. The topography of the deposited surface was analyzed by SEM, wherein base material, deposition, and interface were distinctly visible with the occurrence of a few micro-cracks. The XRD contour of the coating exhibited peaks of Al, Al2Cu, Cu, and SiC. Owing to the wavelength-dependent limits of the deep ultraviolet exposure process, the semiconductor industry introduced extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography operating at a 13.5 nm wavelength. Traditional photomasks employ pellicles for protection; however, EUV-specific pellicles are not widely applicable to commercial processes, requiring the development of a EUV photomask cleaning method. In this study, a wet cleaning method for Ta-based EUV photomasks at room temperature was systematically examined in terms of key parameters, including the pattern step height, surface topography, and particulate count, via atomic force microscopy and x-ray reflectivity. Post sulfuric acid-hydrogen peroxide mixture (SPM) treatment, the photomask exhibited a stable step height, indicating minimal pattern degradation. Additionally, discernible alterations in the surface roughness and a decrease in particle count were observed, further indicating to the effectiveness of SPM-mediated cleaning. Conversely, following standard clean-1 (SC-1) treatment, while the pattern step height remained relatively unchanged, a notable increase in surface irregularities and macroscopic particulates was observed, suggesting a suboptimal cleaning efficiency of the SC-1 solution despite its potential for pattern structure preservation. Our room temperature wet cleaning method efficiently reduces wear-out and successfully eliminates contaminants, potentially prolonging the EUV photomask's productivity and durability. Most previous publications attempt to control the trapping and release of liquid droplets on a surface through tuning the surface energy of the substrate, for example, by photoisomerization. In this work, the energy barrier between the trapped and released state is raised or lowered by controlling the droplet contact area. This is achieved by designing a dynamically reconfigurable surface where an external stimulus is used to change the surface topography. The system consists of two microstructured components, one being ridges separated by microtrenches and the other a perforated membrane. They are aligned in such a way that the ridges can be raised or lowered through the perforations with the help of a piezo drive. This way the topography changes from surfaces consisting of hills to one consisting of holes – and back again. Introduction: On November 21, 2022, a magnitude Mw 5.6 earthquake struck Cianjur Regency in the West Java Province of Indonesia. It was followed by at least 512 aftershocks that persisted from November to June 2023. This seismic event occurred in an area previously unrecognized as an active fault zone. The consequences of this earthquake in Cianjur were severe, leading to both loss of life and extensive structural damage. The substantial damage to buildings was likely a result of abrupt alterations in the local topography due to surface deformation effects. Objectives: This research endeavor aims to spatially determine the patterns of ground surface deformation and its relationship with local geomorphological setting due to earthquakes in Cianjur in 2022. Methods: In this study we conduct seismological analysis of 45 seismic stations, statistical analysis of mainshock and aftershocks data, RADAR Sentinel-1 imagery and employed the DInSAR methodology. Field survey was also conducted to determine the geomorphological characteristics in the study area. Results: The outcomes disclosed that the deformation encompassed both subsidence and uplift. The results signify that there was subsidence deformation in the vicinity of Cianjur and its environs during the primary earthquake on November 21, 2022, with an average deformation value of approximately -5 cm. In contrast, the measured deformation during the aftershocks exhibited uplift deformation, with an average value of 10 cm. The examination of deformation patterns amid the 2022 Cianjur earthquake sequence detects elevated deformation values in the vicinity of Cugenang district, with an orientation running from northwest to southeast. The geomorphological investigation conducted indicates that the region of Cianjur encompasses a variety of landforms, such as volcanic, structural, fluvial, and denudational. These landforms exhibit distinct responses to seismic activities. Co-seismic hazards, such as landslides frequently occur as a consequence of seismic events in mountainous terrain. Main Conclusions: Spatio-temporal variation of ground deformation could arise from various causes, such as the number and distribution of aftershocks, stress redistribution, fault interactions, secondary effects, and local geological settings. The mainshocks release accumulated stress along a fault, resulting in particular types of deformation, whereas aftershocks may redistribute stress exhibiting on adjacent faults. Secondary effects triggered by aftershocks, coupled with local geological and geomorphological conditions, further contribute to the diverse patterns of ground deformation observed during seismic events. The results of the study revealed that ground deformation had the greatest impact on fluvial, volcanic, and denudational processes, resulting in notable subsidence and uplift in specific regions. The occurrence and magnitude of co-seismic landslides were triggered by both mainshock and aftershock events, which occurred on weathered geological materials. These effects were further amplified by the simultaneous presence of the rainy season. In this paper, ITO films prepared by RF magnetron sputtering, and ITO and FTO films purchased were used as research objects. Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer was used to characterize the film transmittance of the samples. The results show that both ITO and FTO films exhibit good optical transmittance. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the surface morphology of the films, and the surface of all the films was relatively uniform. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to characterize the elemental, composition, valence and electronic state information of the sample surface. The results show that the preparation method and annealing treatment affect the elemental composition and valence of the sample surface, and this information has a certain correlation with the electrical and optical properties of the film. Topography complicates the illumination distribution over rugged terrains and hinders the applications of surface reflectance data over mountainous areas. Topographic correction is an essential process to remove the topographic effects in surface reflectance data. This study proposed a Physical model and image Simulation-based topographic Correction method (PSC) for atmospherically corrected surface reflectance images. In contrast with traditional methods, the proposed approach explicitly estimates the illumination distribution over rugged terrains based on image information and then corrects the topographic effects following physical laws. The proposed method was validated and compared with existing well-performed topographic correction methods, including path length correction (PLC), sun-canopy-sensor correction with c factor (SCSC), C correction (CC), and statistical empirical correction (SE). Simulated and satellite data obtained at different times and geolocations are used for evaluation and comparison. The results demonstrated that most existing methods face challenges in removing the biases induced by topography in surface reflectance images. The PLC method failed to obtain reasonable results for faint illumination conditions when the sun zenith angle is high. SE showed relatively poor performance in terms of physical consistency and outlier percentage. Besides, all the traditional methods failed in the correction of cast shadow regions. Comparably, our method consistently demonstrated superior performance in physical consistency, cast shadow correction, and outlier percentage across various regions, encompassing different sun zenith angles and illumination conditions. The proposed method offers an effective and physically consistent approach for the topographic correction of surface reflectance images, facilitating multi-temporal applications over mountainous areas. We propose a new method to obtain 3-D shear wave velocity structures for regions with undulating topography based on surface wave dispersion data. In our method, we assume that surface waves propagate along a curved free surface, and the dispersion effects of these waves can be modelled as a frequency-dependent ray tracing problem. We use the shortest-path method to address off-great-circle propagation arising from inhomogeneous elastic parameters and topographic variations. We then apply our method to both synthetic and real-data inversions and demonstrate that ignoring topographic effects may significantly distort the inverted images. Finally, we analysed the accuracy of our method and provided a rule-of-thumb principle to quantitatively assess the need to account for topographic effects in surface wave tomography for a region. In this paper, the machinability aspects of Ti-5553 have been experimentally investigated during Electro-Discharge Machining using three different geometrical shapes of copper electrodes i.e. cylindrical, triangular, and square. TIMETAL (Ti-5553) is a titanium-based alloy extensively used for special aerospace and marine applications due to its high strength and higher hardenability. By changing each of the aforementioned process parameters at three distinct levels, experiments based on the L 2 7 orthogonal array (OA) design of the experiment (DOE) were carried out. The machining performance has been carried out by utilizing different input parameters i.e. current, pulse off time ( T off ), flushing pressure ( F p ), tool shape ( T s ), and voltage (V) to examine machining performance characteristics like material removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate (TWR), surface roughness (Ra), white layer thickness (WLT), and surface crack density (SCD). Surface integrity in contents of surface morphology and surface topography is discussed herein. In this MRR, TWR, and Ra have been optimized by using a methodology (combining Grey relational analysis method and Taguchi's philosophy) and found the optimal parameters that will have more MRR and less TWR, Ra. Later SCD and WLT were investigated by employing the optimal setting (A3, B2, C2, D2, E1, F3) and arbitrary setting (A3, B2, C1, D3, E3, F2) and concluded that SCD and WLT are less by utilizing optimal settings for machining as compared to arbitrary settings. The surface roughness of the particles in a granular material plays a significant role in its engineering behavior. Because the microsurface features that contribute to the roughness are highly complex and irregular in nature, precise topographical measurements and a mathematically rigorous computational approach are needed for the accurate quantification of surface roughness. In this study, surface roughness of particles from three different sands that represent different sizes and shapes was quantified using spectral methods. A 3D noncontact optical profilometer was used to obtain a high-resolution representative scan area of sand particles. Higher-order moments of the power spectral density (PSD) were used to compute surface roughness parameters such as asperity slope and curvature. The surface roughness values were found to increase with the slope and curvature of the asperities. The value of asperity density, which has a physical significance in contact mechanics, was estimated to be about eight for all type of sands studied. Fractal analysis was carried out on the data obtained from profilometer and microcomputed tomography (μCT) scans to compute the fractal dimensions of sand particles using these two different instruments and compare them. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the correlation between different topographies and the reaction of Ulva Linza fouling species. Design/methodology/approach: In this research, topographies with a different method, such as hot embossing and hot pulling, were achieved, and biological analyses were done with macroalgae Ulva Linza cells. The effect of topography via local binding geometry (honeycomb size gradients) and Wenzel roughness on the settling of Ulva microorganisms was tested. Findings: As a result, Ulva spores confirmed different reactions to a similar set of tapered microstructures that was in agreement with the results on distinct honeycombs. The local binding geometry and the Wenzel roughness factor "r" were dominant on settling of Ulva Linza spores. Research limitations/implications: The reaction of an organism at the interface of vehicles' substrate is powerfully affected by surface topographies. Practical implications: The best embedment occurred on structures with bigger sizes than Ulva Linza's spores. The density of settled spores was proportional to Wenzel roughness and the spores favour to attach to "kink sites" positions. Social implications: Unfortunately, unpleasant aggregation of marine biofouling on marine vehicles' surfaces, generate terrific difficulties in the relevant industry. Originality/value: There was a sharp relationship between Wenzel roughness and settle of Ulva Linza spores. Constructing surface topography with a certain roughness is a widely used, non-toxic, cost-effective and effective method for improving the microenvironment of cells, promoting the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and promoting the osseointegration of grafts and further improving their biocompatibility under clinical environmental conditions. SIRT1 plays an important regulatory role in the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs). However, it remains unknown whether SIRT1 plays an important regulatory role in the osteogenic differentiation of BM-MSCs with regard to surface morphology. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with different surface morphologies were prepared using different grits of sandpaper. The value for BMSCs added on different surfaces was detected by cell proliferation assays. RT-qPCR and Western blotting were performed to detect SIRT1 activation and osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. Osteogenesis of MSCs was detected by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and alizarin red S staining. SIRT1 inhibition experiments were performed to investigate the role of SIRT1 in the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs induced by surface morphology. We found that BM-MSCs have better value and osteogenic differentiation ability on a surface with roughness of PDMS-1000M. SIRT1 showed higher gene and protein expression on a PDMS-1000M surface with a roughness of 13.741 ± 1.388 µm. The promotion of the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs on the PDMS-1000M surface was significantly decreased after inhibiting SIRT1 expression. Our study demonstrated that a surface morphology with certain roughness can activate the SIRT1 pathway of MSCs and promote the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs via the SIRT1 pathway. Artificial optical microfingerprints, known as physically unclonable functions (PUFs) offer a groundbreaking approach for anticounterfeiting. However, these PUFs artificial optical microfingerprints suffer from a limited number of challenge-response pairs, making them vulnerable to machine learning (ML) attacks when additional error-correcting units are introduced. This study presents a pioneering demonstration of artificial optical microfingerprints that combine the advantages of PUFs, a large encoding capacity algorithm, and reliable deep learning authentication against ML attacks. Our approach utilizes the triple-mode PUFs, incorporating bright-field, multicolor fluorescence wrinkles, and the topography of surface enhanced Raman scattering in the mechanical and optical layers. Notably, the quaternary encoding of these PUFs artificial microfingerprints allows for an encoding capacity of 6.43 × 1024082 and achieves 100% deep learning recognition accuracy. Furthermore, the PUFs artificial optical microfingerprints exhibit high resilience against ML attacks, facilitated by generative adversarial networks (GAN) (with mean prediction accuracy of ∼ 85.0%). The results of this study highlight the potential of utilizing up to three PUFs in conjunction with a GAN training system, paving the way for achieving encoded information that remains resilient to ML attacks. The direct laser melting of plasma sprayed bond coat has the possibility of improving the surface topography and can be done with Yb:YAG laser. In the current paper, laser melting of plasma sprayed coatings of 50 wt. % standard Amdry 963 (Ni24.5Cr6Al0.4Y) and 50 wt. % standard Amdry 9621 (Ni22Cr10AlY) was carried out by using 600 W continuous wave Yb:YAG laser. Notably, the obtained melted tracks were investigated from the upper surface plan view and transverse section. The topography, microstructure, phases, hardness, and compositions of the plasma sprayed coatings and laserremelted tracks were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), roughness, and microhardness. By controlling the dependent laser variables (power density and interaction time), a different effect can be obtained for the plasma sprayed bond coating (NiCrAlY). Typically, the results obtained show that at low specific energies, four different distinct zones were observed. These specific energies were not sufficient to produce a uniform melting. The MCrAlY coatings remelted with high specific energies were characterized by completely uniform melting and cellular/dendritic microstructures. The melted coatings have high roughness reduction (1.2 μm) and low hardness (275 HV0.5) in comparison with plasma-sprayed coatings (10.5 μm) and (315 HV0.5) respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional structural asymmetry of the spine and trunk affecting 2–4% of adolescents. Standard treatment is observation, bracing, and surgery for small, moderate, and large curves, respectively. Schroth exercises aim to correct posture and reduce curve progression. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of Schroth exercises added to the standard care compared to standard care alone on torso asymmetry in AIS. Methods: In a randomized controlled trial (NCT01610908), 124 participants with AIS (age: 10–18, Cobb: 10°-45°, Risser: ≤3) were randomly assigned to the control (Standard care only) or Schroth (Standard care + Schroth treatment) group. Schroth treatment consisted of 1-hour weekly supervised sessions and 30–45 minutes of daily home exercises for six months. The control group received Schroth exercises in the last six months of the 1-year monitoring period. Markerless 3D surface topography assessed torso asymmetry measured by maximum deviation (MaxDev) and root mean square (RMS). Intention to treat linear mixed effects model analysis was compared to the per protocol analysis. Results: In the intention to treat analysis, the Schroth group (n = 63) had significantly larger decreased RMS (-1.2 mm, 95%CI [-1.5,-0.9]mm, p = 0.012) and MaxDev (-1.9mm, 95%CI [-2.4,-1.5]mm, p = 0.025) measurements compared to controls (n = 57) after six months of intervention. In the per protocol analysis (Schroth n = 39, control n = 36), the Schroth group also had a significantly larger decrease compared to the control in both the RMS (-1.0mm, 95%CI [-1.9, -0.2]mm, p = 0.013) and MaxDev measurements (-2.0mm, 95%CI [-3.3,-0.5]mm, p = 0.037). For the control group, both the intention to treat and per protocol analysis showed no difference in RMS and MaxDev in the last six months of Schroth intervention (p>0.5). Conclusion: Schroth Exercise treatment added to standard care (observation or bracing) reduced asymmetry measurements in AIS. The accurate depth imaging of piled products provides essential perception for the automated selection of individual objects that require itemized food processing, such as fish, crabs, or fruit. Traditional depth imaging techniques, such as Time-of-Flight and stereoscopy, lack the necessary depth resolution for imaging small items, such as food commodities. Although structured light methods such as laser triangulation have high depth resolution, they depend on conveyor motion for depth scanning. This manuscript introduces an active dual line-laser scanning system for depth imaging static piled items, such as a pile of crabs on a table, eliminating the need for conveyor motion to generate high-resolution 3D images. This advancement benefits robotic perception for loading individual items from a pile for itemized food processing. Leveraging a unique geometrical configuration and laser redundancy, the dual-laser strategy overcomes occlusions while reconstructing a large field of view (FOV) from a long working distance. We achieved a depth reconstruction MSE of 0.3 mm and an STD of 0.5 mm on a symmetrical pyramid stage. The proposed system demonstrates that laser scanners can produce depth maps of complex items, such as piled Chesapeake Blue Crab and White Button mushrooms. This paper describes the effects of macro fibers on permeability and crack surface topography of layered fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) specimens with different layering ratios under uniaxial tensile load. The crack permeability of layered FRC specimens is investigated by a self-designed permeability setup. The topographical analysis of crack surfaces is investigated by a custom-designed laser scanning setup. The results show that when the fiber volume content and layering ratio of the FRC layer are constant, the tensile toughness of layered FRC specimens depends on the proportion of steel fiber in macro fibers, and with an increase in the proportion of steel fiber, the tensile toughness of layered FRC specimens increases. For the layered FRC specimens, the crack permeability is much lower than that of the normal concrete (NC) specimen. A significant positive synergistic effect on crack impermeability can be achieved by the combination of steel fiber and polypropylene fiber in the SF80PP2.3 specimen. The crack surface roughness parameter (Rn) values of the NC layer in layered FRC specimens are all higher than those of the NC specimen, and the crack surface Rn of the FRC layer in layered FRC specimens is higher than that of the unlayered FRC specimens. The laser surface texturing (LST) technique has recently been used to enhance adhesion bond strength in various coating applications and to create structures with controlled hydrophobic or superhydrophobic surfaces. The texturing processing parameters can be adjusted to tune the surface's polarity, thereby controlling the ratio between the polar and dispersed components of the surface free energy and determining its hydrophobic character. The aim of this work is to systematically select appropriate laser and scan head parameters for high-quality surface topography of metal-based materials. A correlation between texturing parameters and wetting properties was made in view of several technological applications, i.e., for the proper growth of conformal layers onto laser-textured metal surfaces. Surface analyses, carried out by scanning electron microscopy and profilometry, reveal the presence of periodic microchannels decorated with laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) in the direction parallel to the microchannels. The water contact angle varies widely from about 20° to 100°, depending on the treated material (titanium, nickel, etc.). Nowadays, reducing the wettability transition time from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity, while also changing environmental conditions, remains a challenge. Excessive consumption of sugary foods increases the likelihood of obesity, as well as the preventable risk of lifestyle illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Frequent intake of sweet snacks is considered to increase the risk of overweight/obesity in industrial nations. However, we cannot stop snacking against our better judgment. Therefore, in this study, we sought to develop high-protein, low-carb "mock snacks" to satisfy snack lovers' appetites and nutrition. Soy protein-based, ball-shaped food products with 57.7% (w/w) protein and 3.6% sugar have been developed. The addition of canola oil made them melty in the mouth without sacrificing their crispiness. Moreover, evaluation of the surface topography of the "soy balls" by 3D laser scanning demonstrated their high degree of sphericity. Electroless nickel plating is widely used to improve the functional characteristics of the engineering parts produced by different manufacturing processes. In most of the cases, these plated surfaces require precision finishing to achieve the desired optical properties for mirror applications. It is difficult to get a high level of surface finish using conventional finishing techniques because of high forces and heat generation. It may result in degradation in the surface properties. In the present work, a compliant finishing tool is used to achieve a surface roughness at the nanoscale on the nickel-plated surface with stainless steel as substrate. The residual stress influences the optical properties of the finished surface. The x-ray diffraction is used to analyze the phase and residual stress on the substrate, as-plated, and ultra-precision finished surface. Microhardness and wear characteristics of these samples are also studied to understand the effect of surface finishing operation on nickel plating. The hardness of the as-plated surface is much higher than the substrate, and there is negligible effect of finishing process on the hardness. Nitronic-50 stainless steel is a high-strength and corrosion-resistant austenitic premium steel. It requires improved surface characteristics due to its wide use in various applications like fasteners, marine hardware, hydroelectric-power turbines, pressure vessels, etc. This work focuses on machining hard-to-machine Nitronic-50 steel is unconventionally machined using constant frequency ultrasonic-aided low-speed wire electrical discharge machining (USV-LS-WEDM) to enhance its machined surface integrity. This method achieves effective results when cutting high-strength materials with intricate shapes. Material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (Ra) were measured by considering inputs such as servo voltage (SV), pulse off time (T off), pulse on time (T on) and current (I) with an ultrasonic-vibration range of 20,000 Hz. The appropriate selection and usage of LS-WEDM parameters is a challenging process and is done with parametric analysis. The MRR of Nitronic-50 was enhanced with an increase in T on and I along with a reduction in T off and SV. Surface roughness (Ra) decreased with a gradual reduction in T on, I, and an increase in SV. The USV-WEDM was compared with a stand-alone WEDM indicating that the MRR for USV-WEDM was improved by 12% and the Ra was decreased by 9% due to effective distribution of spark discharges, which increased material erosion and redistribution of molten metal characteristics. Semiconductor films are crucial in photocatalysis applications, yet their controlled production remains challenging. Previous studies have mainly focused on deposition processes, heating rates, and doping of semiconductor oxides. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for fabricating tenorite (CuO) semiconductor films with varying precursor concentrations (0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.1 g/ml) using a dip-coating technique. We explore the impact of contact angles, 3D surface topography, and film thickness on photoactivation properties, areas with limited previous research focus. The results demonstrate that higher-concentration tenorite films (0.1 g/ml) exhibit rougher surfaces (77.3 nm), increased hydrophobicity (65.61°), improved light-harvesting ability, enhanced charge separation, and higher active oxygen output. The crystal sizes were within the range of 7.3–44.1 nm. Wettability tests show a 21.47% improvement in the 0.1 g/ml film surface under indirect sunlight compared to darkness. Transmittance rates in the 600 nm range were from 0.02 to 90.94%. The direct optical band gaps were 1.21–2.74 eV, while the indirect band gaps remained unaffected (0.9–1.11 eV). Surface morphology analysis reveals an increased presence of grains with higher concentrations. Regarding photocatalysis's impact on film morphology and copper content, SEM images reveal minimal changes in film structure, while copper content remains stable with slight variations. This suggests strong adhesion of tenorite to the film after photocatalysis. Tenorite thin films display exceptional photocatalytic efficiency, making them suitable for practical applications. Bodies made from elastically stiff material usually bind very weakly unless the surfaces are flat and extremely smooth. In direct wafer bonding flat surfaces bind by capillary bridges and by the van der Waals interaction, which act between all solid objects. Here we study the dependency of the work of adhesion on the humidity and surface roughness in hydrophilic direct wafer bonding. The transient mixed lubrication behaviors in thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) contacts during startup and stop are investigated. A transient mixed TEHL model for point contacts under time-varying speed conditions is proposed with comprehensive consideration of surface roughness, thermal effect, and transient behavior. The model is validated by the comparison to available published data. Based on the developed model, significant differences have been found compared with transient EHL and steady TEHL models. In addition, the transient mixed TEHL performance during start–stop with different acceleration rates and surface roughness is investigated. It shows that the lubrication behaviors during start–stop have an irreversible process. The roughness can significantly enhance the transient behavior. The roughness effect has a remarkable impact on lubrication performance in mixed lubrication. Surface topography is an important yet largely neglected aspect of the early evolution of cratons. The lateral accretion of cratonic nuclei inevitably forms orogenic belts that subsequently provide a sediment source for large, resource‐rich intracratonic basins, but to date, geodynamic models have focused exclusively on lithospheric root processes. Here we use two‐dimensional thermal‐mechanical models to study the topography and lithospheric deformation during 50 Myr of compression of a cratonic nucleus, to simulate the lateral accretion phase of craton growth in the Neoarchean. Although the cratonic nucleus thickens slightly during the compression phase, most of the deformation occurs in the regions adjacent to the nucleus that have weaker lithosphere. Here, crustal thickness triples developing high topography in excess of 10 km without active erosion. Models with different initial rheological parameters will have different final topography and lithosphere geometry, but in general it is difficult to shorten and deform the depleted cratonic nucleus, unless there are significantly weak heterogeneities in the mantle lithosphere. We apply two quantitative analysis techniques to objectively evaluate a multitude of model outputs. Cross‐correlation clustering (CCC) measures the degree of similarity between topography profiles and categorizes models based on the general topographic character. Six different topography families are possible in the context of our models and crustal strength is the most important parameter affecting the shape. From principal component analysis (PCA) we identify four dominant lithosphere geometries. When used together, these two methods provide distinct yet complementary information about the surface and subsurface deformation features in our models. The osteoblastic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (bMSCs), critical to the osseointegration of titanium implants, is enhanced on titanium surfaces with biomimetic topography, and this is further enhanced when the surfaces are hydrophilic. This is a result of changing the surface free energy to change protein adsorption, improving cell attachment and differentiation, and improving bone-to-implant contact in patients. In this study, we examined different methods of plasma treatment, a well-accepted method of increasing hydrophilicity, and evaluated changes in surface properties as well as the response of bMSCs in vitro. Commercially pure Ti and titanium–aluminum–vanadium (Ti6Al4V) disks were sand-blasted and acid-etched to impart microscale and nanoscale roughness, followed by treatment with various post-processing surface modification methods, including ultraviolet light (UV), dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)-generated plasma, and plasma treatment under an argon or oxygen atmosphere. Surface wettability was based on a sessile water drop measurement of contact angle; the elemental composition was analyzed using XPS, and changes in topography were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal imaging. The cell response was evaluated using bMSCs; outcome measures included the production of osteogenic markers, paracrine signaling factors, and immunomodulatory cytokines. All plasma treatments were effective in inducing superhydrophilic surfaces. Small but significant increases in surface roughness were observed following UV, DBD and argon plasma treatment. No other modifications to surface topography were noted. However, the relative composition of Ti, O, and C varied with the treatment method. The cell response to these hydrophilic surfaces depended on the plasma treatment method used. DBD plasma treatment significantly enhanced the osteogenic response of the bMSCs. In contrast, the bMSC response to argon plasma-treated surfaces was varied, with an increase in OPG production but a decrease in OCN production. These results indicate that post-packaging methods that increased hydrophilicity as measured by contact angle did not change the surface free energy in the same way, and accordingly, cells responded differently. Wettability and surface chemistry alone are not enough to declare whether an implant has an improved osteogenic effect and do not fully explain how surface free energy affects cell response. The manuscript presents the synthesis and dry sliding wear performance of Al7075 alloy‐based composites. Five compositions namely Al7075 alloy, Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide, Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide+3 vol % zirconium diboride, Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide+6 vol % zirconium diboride and Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide+9 vol % zirconium diboride were stir cast and characterized for hardness, x‐ray diffraction, microstructure, and tribological properties. In‐situ formed zirconium diboride particles increase the hardness of Al7075 alloy whereas molybdenum disulfide shows the opposite trend due to its self‐lubricating nature. X‐ray diffraction analysis identifies subsequent phase particles in the matrix while microstructural images exhibit the dispersion and morphology of reinforcement particles. The wear tests and friction coefficient were analyzed with variations of sliding velocity, normal load, sliding distance, and compositions. Further, the obtained wear results were also correlated with microstructure and wear surface topography. Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide composite shows the lowest coefficient of friction because of its self‐lubricating nature. Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide+9 vol % zirconium diboride hybrid composite exhibits the lowest wear rate at high velocity as well as at high load and can be potentially used in manufacturing and tribological applications. The ability to objectively specify surface finish to ensure consistent visual appearance addresses a vital need in surface coating engineering. This work demonstrates how a computational framework, called surface quality and inspection descriptors (SQuID™), can be leveraged to effectively rank different grades of surface finish appearances. ISO 25178-2 areal surface metrics extracted from bandpass-filtered measurements of a set of ten visual smoothness standards taken on a coherent scanning interferometer are used to quantify different grades of powder-coated surface finish. The ability to automatically classify the standard tiles using multi-scale areal texture parameters is compared to parameters obtained from a hand-held gloss meter. The results indicate that the ten different surface finishes can be automatically classified with accuracies as low as 65% and as high as 99%, depending on the filtering and parameters used to quantify the surfaces. In order to optimize machined surface topography, this paper presents a novel algorithm for simulating the surface topography and predicting the surface roughness of a ball-end milling process. First, a discrete workpiece model was developed using the Z-map method, and the swept surface of a cutter edge was represented using triangular approximation. The workpiece surface was updated (i.e., material removal process) using the intersection between the vertical reference line and the triangular facet under a cutting judgement. Second, the proposed algorithm was verified by comparing the simulated 3D surface topography as well as 2D surface profile and average roughness (Sa) with experimental measurements. Then, numerical simulation examples planed by the Box–Behnken design methods were carried out to investigate the Sa in the ball-end milling operation. The correlations of Sa and cutting parameters were represented by a response surface reduced quadratic model based on the ANOVA results. Finally, the feed per tooth, radial depth of cut, and tilt and lead angles were optimized for improving the machining efficiency under the Sa constraints. Manufacturing processes in industry applications are often controlled by the evaluation of surface topography. Topography, in its overall performance, includes form, waviness, and roughness. Methods of measurement of surface roughness can be roughly divided into tactile and contactless techniques. The latter ones are much faster but sensitive to external disturbances from the environment. One type of external source error, while the measurement of surface topography occurs, is a high-frequency noise. This noise originates from the vibration of the measuring system. In this study, the methods for reducing high-frequency errors from the results of contactless roughness measurements of turned surfaces were supported by machine learning methods. This research delves into optimizing filtration methods for surface topography measurements through the application of machine learning models, focusing on enhancing the accuracy of surface roughness assessments. By examining turned surfaces under specific machining conditions and employing a variety of digital filters, the study identifies the Gaussian regression filter and spline filter as the most effective methods at a 22.5 µm cut-off. Utilizing neural networks, support vector machines, and decision trees, the research demonstrates the superior performance of SVMs, achieving remarkable accuracy and sensitivity in predicting optimal filtration methods. Drug delivery vehicles composed of lipids and gemini surfactants (GS) are promising in gene therapy. Tuning the composition and properties of the delivery vehicle is important for the efficient load and delivery of DNA fragments (genes). In this paper, we studied novel gene delivery systems composed of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-3-phosphocholine (DPPC), and GS of the type N,N-bis(dimethylalkyl)- α , ω -alkanediammonium dibromide at different ratios. The nanoscale properties of the mixed DOPC–DPPC–GS monolayers on the surface of the gene delivery system were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). We demonstrate that lipid–GS mixed monolayers result in the formation of nanoscale domains that vary in size, height, and electrical surface potential. To evaluate the influence of printing orientation on flexural strength (σf) and elastic modulus (E) of different 3D printing dental restorative resins. Bar-shaped specimens (n = 20) were fabricated from two SLA-printed resins (FT- Formlabs Temporary, and FP- Formlabs Permanent) and two DLP-printed resins (DFT- Detax Freeprint Temp, and GCT- GC Temporary) using two building orientations (0º and 90º). The 3D-printed structures were aged (14 d) before submitted to three-point bending in 37ºC distilled water at a crosshead speed of 1.0 ± 0.3 mm/min until fracture to calculate the σf and the E values. The fractured surfaces were evaluated using stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) following fractography principles. Data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc (α = 0.001). FP and FT showed significantly higher E values than DFT and GCT, irrespectively of printing orientation (p < 0.001). There was no statistical difference between the building orientations (0º and 90º) for the mean σf and E values for the resin materials evaluated. Fractographic characteristics were similar for the surface fracture from all the materials evaluated, showing typical brittle fracture behavior. Printing orientation did not influence of flexural strength and elastic modulus values for the 3D-printed resin structures evaluated. Surface characteristics of implant reconstructions determine the gingival fibroblast (GF) response and thus soft tissue integration (STI). However, for monolithic implant reconstructions it is unknown whether the (hybrid) ceramic biomaterial type and its surface treatment affect GF response. Therefore, this investigation examined the influence of the implant reconstruction biomaterials hybrid ceramic (HC), lithium disilicate ceramic (LS), 4 and 5 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconiumdioxide ceramics (4/5Y-PSZ) and their surface treatment - machining, polishing or glazing - on surface characteristics and GF response. After characterization of surface topography and wettability by scanning electron microscopy, interferometry and contact angle measurement, the adhesion, morphology, metabolic activity and proliferation of GFs from six donors was investigated by fluorescent staining and a resazurin-based assay at days 1, 3 and 7. Titanium (Ti) served as control. Biomaterial type and surface treatment affected the GF response in a topography-dependent manner. Smooth polished and glazed surfaces demonstrated enhanced GF adhesion and earlier proliferation onset compared to rough machined surfaces. Due to minor differences in surface topography of polished and glazed surfaces, however, the GF response was similar for polished and glazed HC, LS, 4- and 5Y-PSZ as well as Ti. Within the limits of the present investigation, polishing and glazing of machined HC, LS and 4/5Y-PSZ can be recommended to support STI-relevant cell functions in GF. Purpose: To present a novel set of Left–Right Trunk Asymmetry (LRTA) indices and use them to assess the postoperative appearance of the trunk in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) patients. Methods: We hypothesize that LRTA measurements provide complementary information to existing trunk asymmetry indices when documenting the outcome of scoliosis surgery. Forty-nine AIS patients with thoracic curves who underwent posterior spinal fusion were included. All had surface topography scans taken preoperatively and at least 6 months postoperatively. We documented spinal curvature using Radiographic Cobb angles, scoliometer readings and coronal balance. To evaluate Global Trunk Asymmetry (GTA), we used the standard measures of Back Surface Rotation (BSR) and Trunk Lateral Shift (TLS). To measure LRTA, we identified asymmetry areas as regions of significant deviation between the left and right sides of the 3D back surface. New parameters called Deformation Rate (DR) and Maximum Asymmetry (MA) were measured in different regions based on the asymmetry areas. We compared the GTA and LRTA changes with those in spinal curvature before and after surgery. Results: The GTA indices, mainly TLS, showed improvement for more than 75% of patients. There was significant improvement of LRTA in the shoulder blades and waist regions (95% and 80% of patients respectively). Conclusion: We report positive outcomes for LRTA in the majority of patients, specifically in the shoulder blades and waist, even when no reduction of BSR is observed. Surface topography is an important factor in evaluating surface integrity and surface roughness of the processed material to ensure the processing quality and shorten the processing cycle. In this paper, a prediction model of milling surface quality, considering the influence of the machine tool factors, the milling tool factors, and the workpiece material factors, is proposed. Based on the dynamic path trajectory, the model takes first the imbalance of the machine tool spindle as a critical machine factor affecting the tool-workpiece displacement and the surface topography. Then, the tool parameters are predicted using a backpropagation neural network (BPNN); the tool wear behaviors are taken into account. To expand the different workpiece application, material properties, such as the elastoplasticity, are introduced to improve the prediction accuracy. Thus, a series of experiments with various machine tools, milling tools, materials, and processing parameters validate the surface quality prediction model based on machine-tool-material interactions. Finally, the results demonstrate that the simulated outcomes accord well with the experiment; the error rate of the best result is only 3.60%, and the average error rate is 9.6%. In the present scenario, controlling surface characteristics of superalloys such as friction, wear rates, and fatigue failure needs special attention for various manufacturing applications. The present research work deals with the analyses of a fiber laser surface texturing of Hastelloy C-276 to utilize the generated surfaces for high power applications. Texturing on Hastelloy C-276 surface has been achieved with the overlapping of linear micro-grooves. The effects of laser process parameters like laser power, scan speed, pulse frequency, and duty cycle on the surface morphology like arithmetic mean surface roughness (Ra), skewness (Rsk), and kurtosis (Rku) have been studied. Empirical modeling of the process parameters for fiber laser surface texturing of Hastelloy C-276 has been carried out by response surface methodology. A sensitivity analysis is conducted here to find out the sensitivity of process variables on surface characteristics. The combination of laser power of 19.93 W, pulse frequency of 60 kHz, a duty cycle of 38.96%, and a scan speed of 8.41 mm/s lead to the optimized roughness criteria are 1.2 μm, − 0.35, and 3 for Ra, Rsk, and Rku respectively. The performance metrics and characteristics of a wide variety of electrical discharge machines are compared and contrasted in light of the composite materials in order to identify their distinguishing characteristics. EDM research is being conducted on a variety of sophisticated conductive materials, to explore their unpredictable effects on EDM and their specialized applications. Methods for optimizing the study of composite material and their effects on EDM's numerous aspects include Design of Experiments, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Response Surface Methodology, Taguchi with Grey Relational Analysis, and so on. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) are used to study the topography of a variety of composite materials and the latest optimization strategies are also investigated using a variety of algorithms. During milling operations, regenerative and periodic forces are generated from the interactions of cutting tools and workpieces. While the regenerative forces can be preempted by proper choice of process parameters, the periodic forces cannot. The latter induce forced responses which leave behind imprints on machined parts causing, for example, tolerance concerns. Fortunately, the responses and thus the imprints can be mitigated by proper choice of parameters. In the published literature, the imprints seem to be predominantly named according to the type of analytical treatment of the problem. They are mostly called (surface) form error (SFE) when deemed to result from static deflections at instants of periodic forces while they are mostly called surface location error (SLE) when deemed to result from dynamic responses to the periodic forces. Both SFE and SLE are referred to as periodic force induced surface error (PFISE) here. This work presents a comprehensive literature review of the available PFISE modeling methods, including concise generic explanations of the analytical formulations and the solution algorithms. The review contains more than 340 literature references which also cover data-driven methods for which measurements/images of machined surface are used to generate point cloud of surface topography from which patterns of PFISE can be identified or empirical/black box models of surface errors (which include PFISE) can be calibrated. The results of PFISE modeling is usually applied in error compensation algorithms and, hence, works on such applications are also reviewed. Coherence scanning interferometry (CSI) is a widely used non-contact method for measuring areal surface topography. The calculation of groove depth typically employs the 'W/3 rule' specified in ISO 5436-1. However, the batwing effect causes overshoots near the groove edges, which can introduce noise singularities in the selected W/3 region for depth calculation, thereby affecting the measurement of rectangular grating depth. This paper introduces the definition of batwing height and width and proposes a simulation model that considers various factors, such as the center wavelength, spectrum of the illuminating light, shadow effect, and numerical aperture, to analyze their influence on depth measurement. The simulation results demonstrate that the batwing width is the primary factor influencing depth measurement for small grating periods. Specifically, a decrease in numerical aperture increases the batwing width, leading to larger depth measurement errors, while a decrease in the center wavelength reduces the batwing width, resulting in smaller depth measurement errors. The influence of the illumination spectrum and shadow effect on depth measurement is found to be minor. Experimental validation using a step standard consisting of rectangular gratings with different periods and depths confirms the agreement between the experimental and simulated results. This paper focuses on evaluating the roughness of heterogeneous surfaces, aiming to interpret data effectively for thorough assessment. Previous research highlights the significant impact of surface roughness on final coatings. Beam-cutting machining generates surfaces with position-dependent roughness parameter changes. However, there is inconsistency in the methods for investigating roughness in such surfaces, leading to the loss of crucial information and potentially inaccurate results. This could result in flawed coating preparation and subsequent defects. This paper proposes a suitable evaluation method involving an optical 3D profilometer and a stabilizing support system for reliable measurements. It provides a detailed description of the materials and methods used. The objective is to establish a more consistent and accurate approach to assessing roughness for coating preparation. Technical applications demonstrate up-to-fivefold fluctuations in surface topography parameters, as illustrated in this manuscript. Overall, this paper seeks to address these challenges and provide a robust framework for evaluating roughness in heterogeneous surfaces, thereby enhancing surface coating preparation processes.
