Heterogeneous ice nucleation (HIN) has applications in climate science, nanotechnology, and cryopreservation. Ice nucleation on the earth's surface or in the atmosphere usually occurs heterogeneously involving foreign substrates, known as ice nucleating particles (INPs). Experiments identify good INPs but lack sufficient microscopic resolution to answer the basic question: What makes a good INP? We employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in combination with machine learning (ML) to address this question. Often, the large amount of computational cost required to cross the nucleation barrier and observe HIN in MD simulations is a practical limitation. We use information obtained from short MD simulations of atomistic surface and water models to predict the likelihood of HIN. We consider 153 atomistic substrates with some surfaces differing in elemental composition and others only in terms of lattice parameters, surface morphology, or surface charges. A range of water features near the surface (local) are extracted from short MD simulations over a time interval (≤ 300 ns) where ice nucleation has not initiated. Three ML classification models, Random Forest (RF), support vector machine, and Gaussian process classification are considered, and the accuracies achieved by all three approaches lie within their statistical uncertainties. Including local water features is essential for accurate prediction. The accuracy of our best RF classification model obtained including both surface and local water features is 0.89 ± 0.05. A similar accuracy can be achieved including only local water features, suggesting that the important surface properties are largely captured by the local water features. Some important features identified by ML analysis are local icelike structures, water density and polarization profiles perpendicular to the surface, and the two-dimensional lattice match to ice. We expect that this work, with its strong focus on realistic surface models, will serve as a guide to the identification or design of substrates that can promote or discourage ice nucleation. Goethite (α-FeOOH), a vital water- and hydrogen-bearing natural mineral, is extensively distributed on the Earth's surface and probably in the lower mantle. Laboratory measurements of its phase transition and sound velocities provide crucial data for a more rational understanding of the deep-water transportation and physical properties of the Earth's interior. Herein, the Hugoniot equation of state and sound velocities of natural goethite up to around 15 GPa are measured by dynamic compression. The discontinuities pertinent to the density and sound velocities of goethite are observed at 7.1 (2) GPa, in which a solid–solid phase transition occurs from α- (Pbnm) to ɛ-FeOOH (P21nm). Through this structural phase transition, the longitudinal and shear wave velocities in order, enhance by about 5% and 12%. We suggest that changes in the sound velocity due to the FeOOH phase transition may contribute to the discontinuity in the subduction zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current space missions to Luna and Mars are considering to use the resources, which can be found on‐site at the destination. This strategy named in‐situ resource utilization (ISRU) saves valuable pay‐load capacities during the rocket launch from the earth surface. Specifically, in mars missions it is intended to produce the necessary rocket fuel CH4 for the back‐transit to earth via water electrolysis and subsequent CO2 methanation. The present study elaborates this concept and examines the question if polymeric reactors are feasible for heterogeneously catalyzed reactions in applications beyond earth. The study aims at providing a theoretical backbone for a proof‐of‐concept. The evaluation is conducted theoretically by design considerations and adds experimental results to show the general feasibility of polymeric reactors for applicable reaction conditions. Geodiversity—the diversity of abiotic features and processes of the Earth's surface and subsurface—is an increasingly used concept in ecological research. A growing body of scientific literature has provided evidence of positive links between geodiversity and biodiversity. These studies highlight the potential of geodiversity to improve our understanding of biodiversity patterns and to complement current biodiversity conservation practices and strategies. However, definitions of geodiversity in ecological research vary widely. This can hinder the progress of geodiversity–biodiversity research and make it difficult to synthesize findings across studies. In situ iron isotope ratios (δ56Fe) in sulfide measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) can provide valuable information on several of Earth's surface processes. SIMS relies on the use of a matrix‐matched reference material to correct for instrumental mass fractionation. To date Balmat pyrite has been widely used as a reference material, on the assumption of its homogeneous δ56Fe composition. However, several studies have reported divergent bulk δ56Fe values, which may jeopardise its use. Here, we combined bulk solution MC‐ICP‐MS and in situ SIMS δ56Fe measurements on two Balmat batches: the Balmat‐Original published in Whitehouse and Fedo (2007) and Balmat‐UNIL. Despite similar compositions, this study demonstrates the existence of two isotopically distinct Balmat populations. With respect to Balmat‐Original (δ56Fe = ‐0.39 ± 0.05‰, 2s), Balmat‐UNIL is isotopically 'lighter' with a bulk solution MC‐ICP‐MS composition of ‐1.46 ± 0.024‰. Additionally, Balmat‐UNIL has two subpopulations: the first is characterised by δ56Fe values of ‐1.46 ± 0.25‰, whereas the second agrees with the original Balmat batch. In each Balmat‐UNIL subpopulation, the intra‐grain and inter‐grain variabilities are sufficient to use Balmat as a reference material for δ56Fe isotope measurements by SIMS. Indigenous Peoples' lands (IPL) cover at least 38 million km2 (28.1%) of Earth's terrestrial surface. These lands can be important for biodiversity conservation. Around 20.7% of IPL intersect areas protected by government (PAs). Many sites of importance for biodiversity within IPL could make a substantial but hitherto unquantified contribution to global site‐based conservation targets. Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) represent the largest global network of systematically identified sites of high importance for biodiversity. We assessed the effectiveness of IPL in slowing biodiversity loss inside and outside PAs by quantifying tree cover loss from 2000 to 2019 in KBAs at international and national levels and comparing it with losses at equivalent sites outside mapped IPL. Based on a matched sample of 1‐km2 cells in KBAs inside and outside mapped IPL, tree cover loss in KBAs outside PAs was lower inside IPL than outside IPL. By contrast, tree cover loss in KBAs inside PAs was lower outside IPL than inside IPL (although the difference was far smaller). National rates of tree cover loss in KBAs varied greatly in relation to their IPL and PA status. In one half of the 44 countries we examined individually, there was no significant difference in the rate of tree cover loss in KBAs inside and outside mapped IPL. The reasons for this intercountry variation could illuminate the importance of IPL in meeting the Convention on Biological Diversity's ambition of conserving 30% of land by 2030. Critical to this will be coordinated action by governments to strengthen and enforce Indigenous Peoples' rights, secure their collective systems of tenure and governance, and recognize their aspirations for their lands and futures. In the Earth's atmosphere, greenhouse gases (GHGs) and reactive trace gases are essential components of chemistry–climate interactions. These trace gases are emitted from both natural and anthropogenic sources over terrestrial and marine regions. Air–sea exchange is the dominant process controlling the distribution of several important trace gases over remote marine regions. Although the ocean–atmosphere interface covers ~70% of the Earth's surface, the quantitative air–sea exchange of reactive trace gases is estimated over the limited oceanic regions. The production and air–sea exchange of trace gases are controlled by physical conditions at both sides of the interface and ocean biogeochemistry. The northern Indian Ocean (NIO) experiences strong seasonal monsoon winds and intense tropical cyclones. Consisting of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, it is one of the most biologically productive regimes of the world ocean and home to the intense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the Arabian Sea with dissolved oxygen concentrations. Thus, the NIO offers a unique system to investigate the air–sea exchange processes of reactive trace gases. So far, most of the studies of air–sea exchange of trace gases is focused on the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, while studies over the northern Indian Ocean are very limited and reported mainly for CH4, CO2 and N2O. Although progress has been made in recent years, studies of air–sea exchange of reactive trace gases such as non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHCs), oxygen-, sulfur- and halogen-containing hydrocarbons remain scarce. This paper addresses the current understanding of air–sea exchange processes and fluxes of reactive trace gases, including NMHCs, dimethyl sulfide (DMS), oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs), halocarbons, carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3) in the northern Indian Ocean. This review summarizes the studies on the air–sea exchange of trace gases over the northern Indian Ocean and common parametrization approaches used to estimate the air–sea flux of gases. Flux range for ethene (3–10.35 µmol m–2 d–1), isoprene (0.215–0.172 µmol m–2 d–1), acetaldehyde (–6.75–11.35 µmol m–2 d–1), acetone (–9–9 µmol m–2 d–1), DMS (0.03–41.4 µmol m–2 d–1) and CO (1.4–5.4 µmol m–2 d–1) over the NIO were summarized from various in-situ and modelling studies. The paper addresses the importance of the northern Indian Ocean apropos the production and exchange of reactive trace gases, the knowledge gaps and the future scientific scope. Additionally, it emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary study of oceanic reactive trace gas cycling and its impact on regional atmospheric chemistry over the northern Indian Ocean. [Display omitted] Sulfate reduction is an essential metabolism that maintains biogeochemical cycles in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Sulfate reducers are exclusively prokaryotic, phylogenetically diverse, and may have evolved early in Earth's history. However, their origin is elusive and unequivocal fossils are lacking. Here we report a new microfossil, Qingjiangonema cambria , from ∼518-million-year-old black shales that yield the Qingjiang biota. Qingjiangonema is a long filamentous form comprising hundreds of cells filled by equimorphic and equidimensional pyrite microcrystals with a light sulfur isotope composition. Multiple lines of evidence indicate Qingjiangonema was a sulfate-reducing bacterium that exhibits similar patterns of cell organization to filamentous forms within the phylum Desulfobacterota, including the sulfate-reducing Desulfonema and sulfide-oxidizing cable bacteria. Phylogenomic analyses confirm separate, independent origins of multicellularity in Desulfonema and in cable bacteria. Molecular clock analyses infer that the Desulfobacterota, which encompass a majority of sulfate-reducing taxa, diverged ∼2.41 billion years ago during the Paleoproterozoic Great Oxygenation Event, while cable bacteria diverged ∼0.56 billion years ago during or immediately after the Neoproterozoic Oxygenation Event. Taken together, we interpret Qingjiangonema as a multicellular sulfate-reducing microfossil and propose that cable bacteria evolved from a multicellular filamentous sulfate-reducing ancestor. We infer that the diversification of the Desulfobacterota and the origin of cable bacteria may have been responses to oxygenation events in Earth's history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Motivated by an important geophysical application, we analyze the nonlinear dynamics of the number of earthquakes per unit time in a given Earth's surface area. At first, we consider a dynamical model of earthquakes describing their rhythmic behavior with time delays. This model comprises different earthquake scenarios divided into three types (A, B, and C) accordingly to various system dynamics. We show that the deterministic system contains stable equilibria and a limit cycle whose size drastically depends on the production rate α$$ \alpha $$ of earthquakes and their time delay effect. As this takes place, the frequency of earthquakes possesses an oscillatory behavior dependent on α$$ \alpha $$. To study the role of α$$ \alpha $$ in more detail, we have introduced a white Gaussian noise in the governing equation. First of all, we have shown that the dynamical system is stochastically excitable, that is, it excites larger‐amplitude noise‐induced fluctuations in the frequency of earthquakes. In addition, these large‐amplitude stochastic fluctuations can alternate with small‐amplitude fluctuations over time. In other words, the frequency of earthquakes can change its amplitude in an irregular manner under the influence of white noise. Another important effect is how close the current value of α$$ \alpha $$ is to its bifurcation point. Surface and satellite observations of atmospheric methane show smooth seasonal behavior in the Southern Hemisphere driven by loss from the hydroxyl (OH) radical. However, observations in the Northern Hemisphere show a sharp mid‐summer increase that is asymmetric with the Southern Hemisphere and not captured by the default configuration of the GEOS‐Chem chemical transport model. Using an ensemble of 22 OH model estimates and 24 wetland emission inventories in GEOS‐Chem, we show that the magnitude, latitudinal distribution, and seasonality of Northern Hemisphere wetland emissions are critical for reproducing the observed seasonality of methane in that hemisphere, with the interhemispheric OH ratio playing a lesser role. Reproducing the observed seasonality requires a wetland emission inventory with ∼80 Tg a−1 poleward of 10°N including significant emissions in South Asia, and an August peak in boreal emissions persisting into autumn. In our 24‐member wetland emission ensemble, only the LPJ‐wsl MERRA‐2 inventory has these attributes. Plain Language Summary: The amount of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, has been growing in Earth's atmosphere during the last decade, and scientists disagree about which methane sources and sinks are responsible for the growth. One clue into understanding methane's sources and sinks is their seasonality—their month‐to‐month cycles that happen every year. Measurements of atmospheric methane taken at the Earth's surface and using satellite instruments show a steep increase each summer in the Northern Hemisphere that is not replicated when methane is simulated in a global chemical transport model, indicating missing information about source and sink seasonalities. To investigate, we use that model to simulate 24 representations of methane's largest source, emissions from wetlands, and 22 representations of its largest sink, chemical loss by the hydroxyl radical (OH). We find that OH is unlikely to cause the summer increase and model bias, but the amount, spatial distribution, and seasonal cycles of global wetland emissions are the strongest drivers. We suggest that these characteristics are linked to the underlying mechanisms determining wetland area and methane production in wetland models. The results unveil the role of global wetlands in driving methane's seasonality and inform research to analyze methane's long‐term trends. Subduction processes play a pivotal role in facilitating material exchange between the crust and mantle, contributing to the growth of continents. However, the onset and evolution of subduction remain hotly debated. Here, we developed a high‐dimensional machine learning (ML) model to use multiple compositional data (e.g., Nb/La, Nb, Ti, Nb/U, Pb/Nd, and Nb/Th) to distinguish arc‐type from non‐arc basalts worldwide, then applied this well‐trained ML model to identify and delineate the secular occurrence of Archean arc‐type basalts. Our findings indicate that basaltic arc magmatism can be traced back to only a few early Archean cratons. A noticeable increase in the prevalence of arc‐type basalts during the Mesoarchean and Neoarchean suggests the synchronous formation of Archean subduction across different cratons. This observation hints at transitioning from the predominantly stagnant geodynamic regime to the early, more mobile tectonic regime. This process is crucial for building the continental crust. Despite its importance, how the subduction process evolved over billions of years remains debated. To better understand when and where subduction began, we trained a machine learning model to distinguish between arc (subduction‐related) and non‐arc (not subduction‐related) basalts to recognize the chemical "fingerprints" of subduction in these rocks. By applying the same model to ancient basalts, we could trace basaltic arc‐like magmatism back to several Archean eon cratons, known as cratons, early in Earth's history (during the Archean Eon). The number of arc‐type basalts increased during the Mesoarchean and late Archean, suggesting that subduction expanded to different regions for about 700 million years. The transition suggests a significant shift in how the Earth's crust moved and changed, from a primarily steady state to a more mobile tectonics as observed today. Marine carbonates record geochemical information on the state of Earth's surface environment in the geological past, but recrystallization during burial can make the records difficult to interpret. Here, we report shore to basin gradients in δ44Ca values in matrix limestone and burrow dolomite across a sequence of Late Ordovician (Katian Stage) burrow-mottled carbonates in the Williston Basin, an intracratonic epeiric marine basin in North America. Both gradients are interpreted to have diagenetic origins. The gradient in limestone δ44Ca values developed in a bathymetrically controlled sediment- to fluid-buffered diagenetic system operating between the center and the edges of the basin. Two dolomitizing events formed the gradient in dolomite δ44Ca values. The sediment-buffered end of the limestone gradient preserves the δ44Ca value of the original carbonate mud (∼–1.28 ± 0.10 ‰). The fluid-buffered end of the gradient conserves the δ44Ca value of contemporaneous seawater (–0.47 ± 0.10 ‰), because: (1) pore water exchange drivers operated with greater variety and intensity in shallow water settings, (2) shallow nearshore deposits exchanged more Ca with seawater during recrystallization to diagenetic calcite than deeper offshore deposits, and (3) diagenetic calcite formed with negligible fractionation under equilibrium conditions. The gradient conserves the local value of Δ sed (–0.81 ± 0.20 ‰) despite its diagenetic origin, and the magnitude of Δ sed is consistent with primary calcite precipitation in a 'calcite sea'. Field assessment of the equilibrium Ca isotope fractionation factor between calcite and dolomite of –0.41 ± 0.17 ‰ at ambient temperature is applied to correct basin-centered dolomite for fractionation, yielding –1.62 ± 0.27 ‰, which is very different from the –0.25 ± 0.07 ‰ value of Ca in evaporatively concentrated seawater from which the dolomite originally formed. Applying the same fractionation factor to correct literature data on early diagenetic dolomite in the Great Basin, North America, yields –0.69 ± 0.22 ‰ for the δ44Ca value of seawater, which is ∼0.2 ‰ lower than 'normal marine' waters in stratigraphically equivalent deposits in the Willison Basin, and 0.44 ‰ lower than evaporatively concentrated seawater during a brief period of basin restriction and anhydrite deposition. The nearly 0.5 ‰ variation in the δ44Ca value of Katian seawater falls within the range of scatter in the brachiopod reconstruction of seawater Ca isotopes. Here, we propose that the true ocean record of secular change lies towards the bottom of the range of scatter, and that the higher values in the record reflect local Ca cycling and circulation restriction in epeiric seas. Epeiric seas cultivate the fluid-buffered diagenetic conditions required to promote Ca isotope exchange between reactive carbonate sediments and seawater through carbonate mineral dissolution/recrystallization, crystal coarsening by way of Ostwald ripening, and replacive dolomitization. It is not the apportioning of kinetically fractionated aragonite and calcite in the carbonate deposition flux that drove secular changes in global value of Δ sed between 'calcite' and 'aragonite' seas, but rather the replacement of kinetic fractionations with equilibrium fractionations during fluid-buffered diagenesis with seawater. Soil–Vegetation–Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) models are a promising avenue towards gaining a better insight into land surface interactions and Earth's system dynamics. One such model developed for the academic and research community is the SimSphere SVAT model, a popular software toolkit employed for simulating interactions among the layers of vegetation, soil, and atmosphere on the land surface. The aim of the present review is two-fold: (1) to deliver a critical assessment of the model's usage by the scientific and wider community over the last 15 years, and (2) to provide information on current software developments implemented in the model. From the review conducted herein, it is clearly evident that from the models' inception to current day, SimSphere has received notable interest worldwide, and the dissemination of the model has continuously grown over the years. SimSphere has been used so far in several applications to study land surface interactions. The validation of the model performed worldwide has shown that it is able to produce realistic estimates of land surface parameters that have been validated, whereas detailed sensitivity analysis experiments conducted with the model have further confirmed its structure and architectural coherence. Furthermore, the recent inclusion of novel functionalities in the model, as outlined in the present review, has clearly resulted in improving its capabilities and in opening up new opportunities for its use by the wider community. SimSphere developments are also ongoing in different aspects, and its use as a toolkit towards advancing our understanding of land surface interactions from both educational and research points of view is anticipated to grow in the coming years. For the past 20 years, Global Navigation Satellite System reflectometry (GNSS-R) technology has successfully shown its potential for remote sensing of the Earth's surface, including ocean and land surfaces. It is a multistatic radar that uses the GNSS signals reflected from the Earth's surface to extract land and ocean characteristics. Because of its numerous advantages such as low cost, multiple signal sources, and all-day/weather and high-spatiotemporal-resolution observations, this new technology has attracted the attention of many researchers. One of its most promising applications is GNSS-R ocean altimetry, which can complement existing techniques such as tide gauging and radar satellite altimetry. Since this technology for ocean altimetry was first proposed in 1993, increasing progress has been made including diverse methods for processing reflected signals (such as GNSS interferometric reflectometry, conventional GNSS-R, and interferometric GNSS-R), different instruments (such as an RHCP antenna with one geodetic receiver, a linearly polarized antenna, and a system of simultaneously used RHCP and LHCP antennas with a dedicated receiver), and different platform applications (such as ground-based, air-borne, or space-borne). The development of multi-mode and multi-frequency GNSS, especially for constructing the Chinese BeiDou Global Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3), has enabled more free signals to be used to further promote GNSS-R applications. The GNSS has evolved from its initial use of GPS L1 and L2 signals to include other GNSS bands and multi-GNSS signals. Using more advanced, multi-frequency, and multi-mode signals will bring new opportunities to develop GNSS-R technology. In this paper, studies of GNSS-R altimetry are reviewed from four perspectives: (1) classifications according to different data processing methods, (2) different platforms, (3) development of different receivers, and (4) our work. We overview the current status of GNSS-R altimetry and describe its fundamental principles, experiments, recent applications to ocean altimetry, and future directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past three decades, Sri Lanka has observed a substantial rise in landslide occurrences linked to intensified rainfall. However, the lack of comprehensive landslide inventories has hampered the development of effective risk analysis and simulation systems, requiring Sri Lanka to rely heavily on foreign-developed models, despite the difficulty of fully examining the similarities between the characteristics of landslides in Sri Lanka and the areas where the model has been developed. Satellite images have become readily available in recent years and have provided information about the Earth's surface conditions over the past few decades. Thus, this study verifies the utility of satellite images as a cost-effective remote-sensing method to clarify the commonalities and differences in the characteristics of landslides in two regions Ikawa, Japan, and Sabaragamuwa, Sri Lanka, which exhibit different geological formations despite similar annual rainfall. Using Google Earth satellite images from 2013 to 2023, we evaluated land-slide density, types, and geometry. The findings reveal that Ikawa exhibits a higher landslide density and experiences multiple-type landslides. In contrast, both areas have similar initiation areas; however, Sabaragamuwa predominantly experiences single landslides that are widespread and mobile. The findings also reveal that various characteristics of landslides are mainly influenced by varied topography. Here, we confirmed that even in areas where comprehensive information on landslides is conventionally lacking, we can understand the characteristics of landslides by comparing landslide geometry between sites using satellite imagery. With the depletion of the ozone layer, the intensity of ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation reaching the Earth's surface increases, which in turn causes significant stress to plants and affects all aspects of plant growth and development. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of response to UV-B radiation in the endemic species of Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall. (R. chrysanthum) in the Changbai Mountains and to study how exogenous ABA regulates the response of R. chrysanthum to UV-B stress. The results of chlorophyll fluorescence images and OJIP kinetic curves showed that UV-B radiation damaged the PSII photosystem of R. chrysanthum, and exogenous ABA could alleviate this damage to some extent. A total of 2148 metabolites were detected by metabolomics, of which flavonoids accounted for the highest number (487, or 22.67%). KEGG enrichment analysis of flavonoids that showed differential accumulation by UV-B radiation and exogenous ABA revealed that flavonoid biosynthesis and flavone and flavonol biosynthesis were significantly altered. GO analysis showed that most of the DEGs produced after UV-B radiation and exogenous ABA were distributed in the cellular process, cellular anatomical entity, and catalytic activity. Network analysis of key DFs and DEGs associated with flavonoid synthesis identified key flavonoids (isorhamnetin-3-O-gallate and dihydromyricetin) and genes (TRINITY_DN2213_c0_g1_i4-A1) that promote the resistance of R. chrysanthum to UV-B stress. In addition, multiple transcription factor families were found to be involved in the regulation of the flavonoid synthesis pathway under UV-B stress. Overall, R. chrysanthum actively responded to UV-B stress by regulating changes in flavonoids, especially flavones and flavonols, while exogenous ABA further enhanced its resistance to UV-B stress. The experimental results not only provide a new perspective for understanding the molecular mechanism of the response to UV-B stress in the R. chrysanthum, but also provide a valuable theoretical basis for future research and application in improving plant adversity tolerance. • We model precipitating electron fluxes, and investigate sensitivity of the model to the boundary conditions. • The dynamics of the modeled precipitating electron fluxes are qualitatively similar to POES observations at >30 keV and >100 keV. • We compute and validate ionization rates based on precipitating flux, which can be used in atmospheric models. Electron and ion fluxes at energies of ∼10 keV−1 MeV can change by orders of magnitude during geomagnetically active periods. This can lead to intensification of particle precipitation into the Earth's atmosphere. The process further affects atmospheric chemistry, which may impact weather and climate on the Earth's surface. In this study, we concentrate on ring current electrons, and investigate precipitation mechanisms using a numerical model based on the Fokker-Planck equation. We focus on a study of the main precipitation mechanisms, and their connection with atmospheric parameters. We investigate the 17 March 2013 storm using the convection–diffusion 4-Dimensional Versatile Electron Radiation Belt (VERB-4D) code, that allows us to quantify the impact of the storm on the electron ring current, and the resulting electron precipitation. We validate our results against observations from the Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES) mission, the low Earth orbiting meteorological satellites National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA-15,-16,-17,-18,-19), and Meteorological Operational Satellite MetOp-02, as well as the Van Allen Probes, and produce a data set of precipitating fluxes that covers an energy range from 10 keV to 1 MeV. We calculate the altitude-dependent atmospheric ionization rates, a prerequisite for atmospheric models to estimate effects of geomagnetically active periods on chemical and physical variability of the atmosphere at high latitudes. Atmospheric ionization rates are validated against Atmospheric Ionization during Substorm (AIMOS 2.1-Aisstorm) and Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imagers (SSUSI) values, and show good agreement at high geomagnetic latitudes during the storm time. At perhaps the coarsest scale of consideration, the rock cycle operates through fluxes associated with tectonic uplift and erosion, which are generally balanced by subsidence/subduction and the burial of mineral materials that leads to volumetric balance among the principal rock reservoirs. At Earth's surface, net rates of transfer are manifest as the reduction of areas of older rocks during erosional destruction as well as during burial by younger units. Because exposure of continental crust comprises some finite space, decrease of older rock area by erosion and/or burial must be largely balanced by an increase in area of new sedimentary and volcanic successions. Here, we examine relations between the lateral extents of rock units exposed across North America-their lithology, elevation, and the age of formation-to determine rates of geologic "repaving" that are recorded in the age and area of rocks making up the surface of the continent. Moreover, because deposition occurs at lower elevations, one might expect that subsequent episodes of uplift and/or burial would serve to increase the average elevation of currently exposed sedimentary lithosomes. Because plutonic and metamorphic rocks form at depth and are only exposed along orogenic belts and across shields after extended intervals of uplift and/or erosion, one might expect basement rocks to be initially exposed at higher elevations, and that subsequent erosion would decrease elevation with increasing age. Therefore, processes giving rise to associations between outcrop lithology, extent, and elevation may serve as measures of continentscale rates of rock cycling. We combine data from the 1 arc-minute global relief model with data from the Geological Society of America's 2005 Geologic Map of North America to assess the actuality and significance of first-order relations among the lithologies, areas, ages, and elevations of rock bodies now exposed across the North American continent and how these may shed light on deep-time rates of rock cycling. Areas of the 23,642 mapped North American lithosomes make up a lognormal frequency distribution (mode = 121 km²). This distribution reflects both natural (lateral extents of individual map units must be limited in space) and anthropogenic (cartographers must render map units within limited range of sizes) causes. Contiguous, lateral associations of the major rock types suggest that the spatial occurrence of volcanic and sedimentary rock bodies is largely independent of the proximity of other rock types, but exposures of plutonic and metamorphic lithosomes are intimately associated in space and thus comprise the "crystalline basement" exposed in cores of younger orogens and across the Canadian Shield. Unlike sedimentary and volcanic rocks that "attain their age" when formed at Earth's surface, plutonic and metamorphic units are "born" at depth and therefore must have reached some antiquity prior to first exposure. As a result, the ages of volcanic and sedimentary exposures span the full range of ages represented by all lithologies, while those of plutonic and metamorphic suites are more abbreviated and older. Median ages of North American volcanic, sedimentary, plutonic, and metamorphic exposures are 482 Ma, 306 Ma, 1695 Ma, and 2467 Ma, respectively. Although the areal extent of sedimentary rock decreases with increasing age, elevation increases. This change is interpreted as reflecting progressive tectonic uplift from initial accumulation at lower elevations. In contrast, the surfaces of exposed volcanic, plutonic, and metamorphic lithosomes become lower in elevation with increasing age. This change reflects both the erosional lowering of lithosome surfaces as well as the progressive exhumation of larger areas of crystalline basement. Exposed rock area exhibits a power law decrease with increasing age. This change reflects the progressive destruction of older units and their burial by younger units. A simple "repaving" model in which 0.8% area is uplifted and eroded per million years is in good agreement with observed relations of map age versus area, the rate of which is equivalent to the resurfacing of the North American continent every 63 m.y. or -56 times over the past 3.5 Ga. The rate of decrease in map area of exposed rocks with increasing age evident in both geologic map data and repaving models is about three times the rate of decrease in total sediment volume as determined from stratigraphic data and repaving models. Marine sediments cover 70% of the Earth's surface, and harbour diverse bacterial communities critical for marine biogeochemical processes, which affect climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Nematodes, the most abundant and species‐rich metazoan organisms in marine sediments, in turn, affect benthic bacterial communities and bacterial‐mediated ecological processes, but the underlying mechanisms by which they affect biogeochemical cycles remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate using a metatranscriptomic approach that nematodes alter the taxonomic and functional profiles of benthic bacterial communities. We found particularly strong stimulation of nitrogen‐fixing and methane‐oxidizing bacteria in the presence of nematodes, as well as increased functional activity associated with methane metabolism and degradation of various carbon compounds. This study provides empirical evidence that the presence of nematodes results in taxonomic and functional shifts in active bacterial communities, indicating that nematodes may play an important role in benthic ecosystem processes. Naples is the most densely populated Italian city (7744 inhabitants per km2). It is located in a particular geological context: the presence of Mt Vesuvius characterizes the eastern part, and the western part is characterized by the presence of the Phlegrean Fields, making Naples a high-geothermal-gradient region. This endogenous heat, combined with the anthropogenic heat due to intense urbanization, has defined Naples as an ideal location for Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) analysis. SUHI analysis was effectuated by acquiring the Land Surface Temperature (LST) over Naples municipality by processing Landsat 8 (L8) Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) images in the 2013–2023 time series by employing Google Earth Engine (GEE). In GEE, two different approaches have been followed to analyze thermal images, starting from the Statistical Mono Window (SMW) algorithm, which computes the LST based on the brightness temperature (Tb), the emissivity value, and the atmospheric correction coefficients. The first one is used for the LST retrieval from daytime images; here, the emissivity component is derived using, firstly, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and then the Vegetation Cover Method (VCM), defining the Land Surface Emissivity (LSɛ), which considers solar radiation as the main source of energy. The second approach is used for the LST retrieval from nighttime images, where the emissivity is directly estimated from the Advance Spaceborne Thermal Emission Radiometer database (ASTER-GED), as, during nighttime without solar radiation, the main source of energy is the energy emitted by the Earth's surface. From these two different algorithms, 123 usable daytime and nighttime LST images were downloaded from GEE and analyzed in Quantum GIS (QGIS). The results show that the SUHI is more concentrated in the eastern part, characterized by intense urbanization, as shown by the Corine Land Cover (CLC). At the same time, lower SUHI intensity is detected in the western part, defined by the Land Cover (LC) vegetated class. Also, in the analysis, we highlighted 40 spots (10 hotspots and 10 coldspots, both for daytime and nighttime collection) that present positive or negative temperature peaks for all the time series. Due to the huge amount of data, this work considered only the five representative spots that were most representative for SUHI analysis and determination of thermal anomalies in the urban environment. When comparing model output with historical radiosonde observations, it is usually assumed that a radiosonde has risen exactly above its starting point and has not been displaced by wind. This changed only relatively recently with the availability of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers aboard radiosondes in the late 1990s, but even then the balloon trajectory data were often not transmitted, although this information was the basis for estimating the wind in the first place. Depending on the conditions and time of year, radiosondes can sometimes drift a few hundred kilometres, particularly at the middle latitudes during the winter months. The position errors can lead to non-negligible representation errors when the corresponding observations are assimilated. This paper presents a methodology to compute changes in the balloon position during its vertical ascent, using only limited information, such as the vertical profile of wind contained in the historical observation reports. The sensitivity of the method to various parameters is investigated, such as the vertical resolution of the input data, the assumption about the vertical ascent speed of the balloon, and the departure of the surface of Earth from a sphere. The paper considers modern GNSS sonde data reports for validation, for which the full trajectory of the balloon is available, alongside the reported wind. Evaluation is also conducted by comparison with ERA5 and by conducting low-resolution data assimilation experiments. Overall, the results indicate that the trajectory of the radiosondes can be accurately reconstructed from original data of varying vertical resolutions and that the more accurate balloon position reduces representation errors and, in some cases, systematic errors. Bare land, as a significant land cover type on the Earth's surface, plays a crucial role in supporting land-use planning, urban management, and ecological environmental research through the investigation of its spatial distribution. However, due to the diversity of land-cover types on the Earth's surface and the spectral complexity exhibited by bare land under the influence of environmental factors, it is prone to confusion with urban and other land features. In order to extract bare land rapidly and efficiently, this study introduces a novel bare land extraction index called the Bare Land Extraction Index (BLEI). Then, considering both Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and Urumqi, China as the study areas, we compared BLEI with three presented indices: the Bare-soil Index (BI), Dry Bare Soil Index (DBSI), and Bare Soil Index (BSI). The results show that BLEI exhibits excellent efficacy in distinguishing bare land and urban areas. It gets the most outstanding accuracy in bare land identification and mapping, with overall accuracy (OA), kappa coefficient, and F1-score of 98.91%, 0.97, and 97.89%, respectively. Furthermore, BLEI is also effective in distinguishing bare land from sandy soil, which can not only improve the mapping accuracy of bare land in soil-deserted areas but also provide technological support for soil research and land-use planning. The urban heat island (UHI) represents an anthropogenic modification to the earth's surface, and its relationship with urban development, built-up age dependency in particular, is poorly understood. We integrated global artificial impervious areas to analyze the impacts of built-up age and urban development intensity (UDI) on land surface temperatures (LSTs) in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province of China, from 2000 to 2019. A key finding was that the built-up areas with different built-up ages were strongly associated with LST, and this relationship does not change significantly over time, suggesting temporal stability of spatial patterns of LSTs. This finding puts forward a challenge to the application of the classic concept of space-for-time in LST studies because the premise of space-for-time is that spatial and temporal variation are equivalent. This result reveals the vital importance of annual development activities on the urban thermal environment. Another highlighted result was LST sensitivity to UDI, an effective measure of the impact of urbanization on LST, which increased significantly from 0.255 °C per 10% UDI to 0.818 °C per 10% UDI. The more than doubling of LST sensitivity to UDI should be a major concern for city administration. High spectral resolution imagery of the Earth's surface enables users to monitor changes over time in fine- grained scale, playing an increasingly important role in agriculture, defense, and emergency response. However, most current algorithms are still confined to describing local features and fail to incorporate a global perspective, which limits their ability to capture interactions between global features, thus usually resulting in incomplete change regions. In this paper, we proposed a Global Multi-head INteractive self-attention change Detection network (GlobalMind) to explore the implicit correlation between different surface objects and variant land cover transformations, acquiring a comprehensive understanding of the data and accurate change detection result. Firstly, a simple but effective Global Axial Segmentation (GAS) strategy is designed to expand the self-attention computation along the row space or column space of hyperspectral images, allowing the global connection with high efficiency. Secondly, with GAS, the global spatial multi-head interactive self-attention (GlobalM) module is crafted to mine the abundant spatial-spectral feature involving potential correlations between the ground objects from the entire rich and complex hyperspectral space. Moreover, to acquire the accurate and complete cross-temporal changes, we devise a global temporal interactive multi-head self-attention (GlobalD) module which incorporates the relevance and variation of bi-temporal spatial-spectral features, deriving the integrate potential same kind of changes in the local and global range with the combination of GAS. A new and challenging hyperspectral change detection dataset is designed for comparison of different approaches. The Yellowstone region (western United States) is a commonly cited example of intraplate volcanism whose origin has been a topic of debate for several decades. Recent work has suggested that a deep mantle plume, rooted beneath southern California, is the source of Yellowstone volcanism. Seismic anisotropy, which typically results from deformation, can be used to identify and characterize mantle flow. Here, we show that the proposed plume root location at the base of the mantle is strongly seismically anisotropic. This finding is complemented by geodynamic modeling results showing upwelling flow and high strains in the lowermost mantle beneath the Yellowstone region. Our results support the idea that the Yellowstone volcanism is caused by a plume rooted in the deepest mantle beneath southern California, connecting dynamics in the deepest mantle with phenomena at Earth's surface. In this work, satellite data from the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instruments are analyzed to determine how the global absorbed sunlight and global entropy production rates have changed from 2002 to 2023. The data is used to test hypotheses derived from the Maximum Power Principle (MPP) and Maximum Entropy Production Principle (MEP) about the evolution of Earth's surface and atmosphere. The results indicate that both the rate of absorbed sunlight and global entropy production have increased over the last 20 years, which is consistent with the predictions of both hypotheses. We present a high-performance implementation of Seismic Redatuming by Inversion (SRI), which combines algebraic compression with mixed-precision (MP) computations. Seismic redatuming entails the repositioning of seismic data recorded at the surface of the Earth to a subsurface level closer to where reflections have originated. Marchenko-based redatuming is the best-in-class SRI method from a theoretical point of view because it can accurately handle full seismic wavefields with minimal data pre-processing. However, it requires intensive data movement, a large memory footprint, and extensive computations due to the need for manipulating large, formally dense, complex-valued frequency matrices in the bandwidth of the recorded seismic data. More precisely, at the heart of Marchenko modeling operator lies a Multi-Dimensional Convolution (MDC) operator, which requires the application of repeated complex-valued Matrix-Vector Multiplications (MVMs) with chosen set of seismic frequency matrices. SRI is deemed to be too time-consuming for realistic domain sizes and therefore industrially impractical. To alleviate these computational bottlenecks, we first improve the memory footprint of the MDC operator by using Tile Low-Rank Matrix-Vector Multiplications (TLR-MVMs); this exploits the low-rank nature of seismic recordings in the frequency domain, used as the kernel of the MDC modeling operator. MP computations are further introduced to increase the arithmetic intensity of the operators. We validate the numerical robustness of our synergistic approach on a benchmark 3D synthetic seismic dataset and demonstrate its use on various hardware architectures. We develop several FP32/FP16/INT8 MP TLR-MVM implementations with a limited and controllable impact on the overall accuracy of application. We achieve up to 63X memory footprint reduction and 12.5X performance speedup against the traditional dense MVM kernel on a single NVIDIA A100 GPU. Moreover, linear scalability is attained when deploying our implementation on eight A100 GPUs. The result of the Michelson-Gale experiment, which shows fringe shifts by the interference between two light beams traversing a rectangular loop in opposite directions, has been nonrelativistically analyzed based on the Galilean transformation. We relativistically analyze it via the transformation under the constant light speed (TCL) and via the framework of Mansouri and Sexl (MS). The TCL provides a coordinate transformation between the isotropic frame and a rotating frame, in which the two-way speed of light is a constant c irrespective of direction on the surface that has the same radius of rotation. When using TCL, we assume that the Solar System is isotropic so that the one-way speed of light is c in it. On the contrary, considering its movement, the analysis is carried out without the assumption of isotropy based on the MS framework. The analysis results via the TCL and via the MS framework correspond to each other and are in agreement with the result of the experiment. It is shown that the difference between the travel times of the counter-propagating light beams, which results in the fringe shift, takes place due to the two factors, the anisotropy of the one-way speed of light in inertial frames and the different rotation radii at different latitudes on the Earth surface. Snow is a major, climate-sensitive feature of the Earth's surface and catalyst of fundamentally important ecosystem processes. Understanding how snow influences sentinel species in rapidly changing mountain ecosystems is particularly critical. Whereas effects of snow on food availability, energy expenditure, and predation are well documented, we report how avalanches exert major impacts on an ecologically significant mountain ungulate - the coastal Alaskan mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus). Using long-term GPS data and field observations across four populations (421 individuals over 17 years), we show that avalanches caused 23−65% of all mortality, depending on area. Deaths varied seasonally and were directly linked to spatial movement patterns and avalanche terrain use. Population-level avalanche mortality, 61% of which comprised reproductively important prime-aged individuals, averaged 8% annually and exceeded 22% when avalanche conditions were severe. Our findings reveal a widespread but previously undescribed pathway by which snow can elicit major population-level impacts and shape demographic characteristics of slow-growing populations of mountain-adapted animals. Understanding interactions between low clouds and land surface fluxes is critical to comprehending Earth's energy balance, yet their relationships remain elusive, with discrepancies between observations and modeling. Leveraging long‐term field observations over the Southern Great Plains, this investigation revealed that cloud‐land interactions are closely connected to cloud‐land coupling regimes. Observational evidence supports a dual‐mode interaction: coupled stratiform clouds predominate in low sensible heat scenarios, while coupled cumulus clouds dominate in high sensible heat scenarios. Reanalysis data sets, MERRA‐2 and ERA‐5, obscure this dichotomy owing to a shortfall in representing boundary layer clouds, especially in capturing the initiation of coupled cumulus in high sensible heat scenarios. ERA‐5 demonstrates a relatively closer alignment with observational data, particularly in capturing relationships between cloud frequency and latent heat, markedly outperforming MERRA‐2. Our study underscores the necessity of distinguishing different cloud coupling regimes, essential to the understanding of their interactions for advancing land‐atmosphere interactions. The ocean carbon reservoir controls atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) on millennial timescales. Radiocarbon (14C) anomalies in eastern North Pacific sediments suggest a significant release of geologic 14C‐free carbon at the end of the last ice age but without evidence of ocean acidification. Using inverse carbon cycle modeling optimized with reconstructed atmospheric CO2 and 14C/C, we develop first‐order constraints on geologic carbon and alkalinity release over the last 17.5 thousand years. We construct scenarios allowing the release of 850–2,400 Pg C, with a maximum release rate of 1.3 Pg C yr−1, all of which require an approximate equimolar alkalinity release. These neutralized carbon addition scenarios have minimal impacts on the simulated marine carbon cycle and atmospheric CO2, thereby demonstrating safe and effective ocean carbon storage. This deglacial phenomenon could serve as a natural analog to the successful implementation of gigaton‐scale ocean alkalinity enhancement, a promising marine carbon dioxide removal method. Using a carbon cycle model and atmospheric data, we simulated different geologic carbon addition scenarios since the last ice age. We find that substantial carbon addition to the ocean could have occurred (up to 1.3 billion tons per year) without causing significant changes to the carbon cycle, but only if the carbon is neutralized by alkalinity in an approximate 1:1 ratio. This neutralized release is similar to an approach of carbon removal called ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), which aims to reduce atmospheric CO2 as a potential solution for climate change. These findings suggest that neutralized carbon addition—in the form of "neutralized" bicarbonate ion HCO3− $\left({\text{HCO}}_{3}^{-}\right)$ instead of "acidic" CO2—could explain the low levels of radiocarbon during the last deglaciation and shows that large‐scale OAE is feasible without causing major changes to the marine carbon cycle. Drainage basins are fundamental units of Earth's surface, describing how flows accumulate across landscapes. They are direct expressions of how tectonics and climatic forces alter Earth's surface morphology. Here, we measure the width‐to‐length ratios (WLRs) of 386,931 drainage basins (average area ∼157 km2), covering all continents except Antarctica and Greenland. Global variations in WLRs are correlated with climatic aridity, whole‐basin slope, and local topographic roughness. Basins in arid landscapes tend to be narrower, potentially reflecting a higher prevalence of surface runoff and therefore a stronger slope‐parallel component of the transporting flow. Local topographic roughness is associated with wider basins, potentially reflecting greater dispersion of flow directions. Conversely, whole‐basin topographic gradients, potentially reflecting gradients in uplift, are associated with narrower basins. However, steeper basins are also often rougher, so revealing the effects of whole‐basin slope requires correcting for the confounding effects of roughness variations. Plain Language Summary: Drainage basins are essential features that help us understand how water accumulates and flows across Earth's landscapes. In this study, we examined the width‐to‐length ratios of 386,931 drainage basins from all continents except Antarctica and Greenland. We found that basins tend to be narrower in more arid climates. We also observed that, all else equal, basins with greater local roughness tend to be wider, and those with steeper whole‐basin slopes tend to be narrower. Our results thus indicate that on the global scale, basin shapes are strongly influenced by topographic roughness, whole‐basin slope and climatic aridity. Our findings hold across different basin scales, encompassing smaller basins with a mean area of approximately 157 km2 to larger basins with a mean area of around 1,000 km2. The amount of energy reaching the Earth's surface from the sun is a quantity of high importance for the climate system and for renewable energy applications. SARAH-3 is a new edition of a satellite-based climate data record of surface solar radiation parameters. It is generated and distributed by the European Organisation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Satellite Application Facility on Climate Monitoring (CM SAF). SARAH-3 covers more than 4 decades of data and provides a high spatial resolution of 0.05° x 0.05° and a temporal resolution of 30-minutes, daily means and monthly means. SARAH-3 consists of seven parameters including surface irradiance, direct irradiance and sunshine duration. SARAH-3 is the successor of SARAH-2.1 and is accompanied by an operational near-real time processing of all parameters – the so-called Interim Climate Data Record, enabling climate monitoring applications. The validation of SARAH-3 shows a good accuracy and stability of the data record and further improves over its predecessor. One reason for this improvement is the new treatment of snow-covered surfaces in the algorithm, reducing the misclassification of snow as clouds. In comparison to biodiversity on Earth's surface, subterranean biodiversity has largely remained concealed. The olm (Proteus anguinus) is one of the most enigmatic extant cave inhabitants, and until now little was known regarding its genetic structure and evolutionary history. Olms inhabit subterranean waters throughout the Dinaric Karst of the western Balkans, with a seemingly uniform phenotypic appearance of cave‐specialized traits: an elongate body, snout and limbs, degenerated eyes and loss of pigmentation ("white olm"). Only a single small region in southeastern Slovenia harbours olms with a phenotype typical of surface animals: pigmented skin, eyes, a blunt snout and short limbs ("black olm"). We used a combination of mitochondrial DNA and genome‐wide single nucleotide polymorphism data to investigate the molecular diversity, evolutionary history and biogeography of olms along the Dinaric Karst. We found nine deeply divergent species‐level lineages that separated between 17 and 4 million years ago, while molecular diversity within lineages was low. We detected no signal of recent admixture between lineages and only limited historical gene flow. Biogeographically, the contemporaneous distribution of lineages mostly mirrors hydrologically separated subterranean environments, while the historical separation of olm lineages follows microtectonic and climatic changes in the area. The reconstructed phylogeny suggests at least four independent transitions to the cave phenotype. Two of the species‐level lineages have miniscule ranges and may represent Europe's rarest amphibians. Reference targets with stability, uniformity, and known reflectance on the Earth's surface, such as deserts, can be used for the absolute radiometric calibration of satellite sensors. A wide-angle hyperspectral reflectance model at the top of atmosphere (TOA) over such a reference target will expand the applicability of on-orbit calibration to different spectral bands and angles. To achieve the long-term, continuous, and high-precision absolute radiometric calibration of remote sensors, a wide-angle hyperspectral TOA reflectance model of the Libyan Desert was constructed based on spectral reflectance data, satellite overpass parameters, and atmospheric parameters from the Terra/Aqua and Earth Observation-1 (EO-1) satellites between 2003 and 2012. By means of angle fitting, viewing angle grouping, and spectral extension, the model is applicable for absolute radiometric calibration of the visible to short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands for sensors within viewing zenith angles of 65 degrees. To validate the accuracy and precision of the model, a total of 3120 long-term validations of model accuracy and 949 cross-validations with the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite sensors between 2013 and 2020 were conducted. The results show that the TOA reflectance calculated by the model had a standard deviation (SD) of relative differences below 1.9% and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) below 0.8% when compared with observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat 8 OLI. The Soil Moisture Active–Passive (SMAP) mission has greatly contributed to the use of remote sensing technologies for monitoring the Earth's land surface and estimating geophysical parameters that influence the climate system. Since the SMAP mission switched its radar receiver to allow the reception of Global Positioning System (GPS) signals, Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) configuration has been enabled, providing full polarimetric forward scattering measurements of the Earth's surface, also known as SMAP Reflectometry or SMAP-R. Polarimetric GNSS-R is beneficial for sensing land surface properties, especially for more accurate estimations of soil moisture (SM) in densely vegetated areas. In this study, we explore the opportunity to enhance SMAP mission soil moisture estimates using reflected GNSS signals. We achieve this by interpolating the sparse reflectivity data with terrain information to disaggregate radiometer brightness temperatures. Our main objective is to present a novel algorithm based on Graph Signal Processing (GSP) that uses reflectometry data to enhance SMAP radiometer observations and ultimately improve SM retrievals. By implementing methods from the GSP field, we formulate the reflectivity interpolation problem as a signal reconstruction on a graph, where the weights of the edges between the nodes are chosen as a function of geophysical information. Subsequently, using the retrieved reflectivity maps, we increase the resolution of the brightness temperature data, leading to an improvement in the SM estimates. Initial findings indicate that our GSP method presents a promising alternative for analyzing sparse remote sensing observations, leveraging Earth's surface geophysical information. This approach results in a notable improvement, with a reduced Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 11.8% compared to SMAP data and a reduction in unbiased RMSE (uRMSE) by 14.7% over vegetated areas. Change detection has always played a crucial role in observing the Earth's surface. Although visual Transformers (ViTs) have achieved excellent performance in change detection, they require high computational complexity. In addition, it does not explicitly address the differences caused by factors such as climate, lighting, and shooting angle in remote sensing (RS) image pairs. Therefore, we propose an efficient, lightweight Siamese network that considers multi-dimensional feature interaction. Firstly, we use a lightweight Transformer-based headless backbone network to extract feature information at each stage for bi-temporal images. To better capture the details and structure of images and eliminate the adverse effects of climate, lighting, and shooting angle, we design a multidimensional feature interaction method that uses spatial, channel, and amplitude dimension interaction methods after feature extraction operations at different stages. Furthermore, this approach achieves domain adaptation between bi-temporal domains to a certain extent while preserving the original semantic correspondence. Comprehensive experiments and extensive ablation studies on two common datasets, LEVIR-CD and S2Looking, have shown that our method achieves better performance with fewer parameters. Near‐surface wind speed (NSWS) over China shows multiple time‐scale changes at a centennial scale, but the contributions of internal variability (IV), anthropogenic forcing (ANT), and natural forcing (NAT) to those changes remain unknown. This study investigated the contributions of IV, ANT, and NAT to NSWS changes at a centennial scale. Results show that the NSWS changes were attributed mainly to IV. IV not only modulated the interannual changes in NSWS but also determined the interdecadal transition in NSWS. The relative contributions of IV to the interannual and decadal NSWS exceeded 75.0%. ANT contributed particularly to the long‐term reduction in NSWS; especially, it has contributed 55.0% of the reduction in NSWS since 1957, serving as the major contributor to the reduction in NSWS. NAT had a small‐to‐negligible effect on China's NSWS throughout the study period. This study enhances our understanding of NSWS changes at different time scales. There has been a growing interest in using cadmium (Cd) isotopes to trace the source of Cd contamination and Cd cycling in the Earth surface. Yet it remains technically challenging to precisely and efficiently determine the Cd isotopic compositions of samples with extremely low Cd concentrations due to the imperfect separation of Cd from the matrix and the interference caused by resin-derived organics when TRU Spec resin was used. In this study, we present a two-stage column chromatography system (AG-MP-1M resin + UTEVA resin) for Cd purification. Here, a Prefilter resin combined with UTEVA resin effectively purifies Cd from Sn after the separation of Cd by AG-MP-1M column while keeping the phosphorous organic compounds to an acceptable level. In contrast to TRU Spec resin, which is prone to leaking through the Prefilter resin, we find that UTEVA resin is effectively retained by the Prefilter resin, thus avoiding the P-related anomalous shifts in the Cd isotope measurement (P/Cd < 1). UTEVA resin also exhibits a comparable capacity for purifying Cd from Sn and Mo when compared to TRU Spec resin. The recovery of the two-stage column system is generally higher than 99% and the procedural blank accounting for sample digestion and chemical purification is lower than 20 pg. The Cd isotopic compositions of several reference materials are determined using double spike MC-ICP-MS, with a 111Cd–113Cd double spike pair optimized for the 111Cd, 112Cd, 113Cd, and 114Cd inversion. The δ114/110Cd values of these reference materials relative to NIST SRM 3108 agree within analytical uncertainty with previous studies. The long-term external precision of δ114/110Cd determined based on replicated measurements of BCR-2 is 0.04‰ (n = 10, 2 SD) for a minimum sample size of 10 ng. Understanding the compositional heterogeneity of the deep mantle requires identifying the nature of recycled crustal materials in the sources of mantle-plume-related magmas. However, it is still unclear whether or not the deep mantle contains recycled carbonates from the Earth's surface. In this study, we present comprehensive data on whole-rock high-precision zinc isotopes, as well as major- and trace-element geochemistry, and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes of basalts on Hainan Island to examine the influence of recycled materials (particularly carbonates) on the mantle source heterogeneity of the Hainan mantle plume. The basalts have highly variable δ66Zn values ranging from 0.21‰ to 0.42‰. These variable Zn isotopic compositions cannot be accounted for by processes such as post-magmatic alteration and crustal contamination, or by fractional crystallization and partial melting; instead, they reflect mantle heterogeneity. Comparisons of the major- and trace-element compositions (e.g., CaO and TiO2 contents and Zn/Fe and Fe/Mn ratios), FC3MS and FCKANTMS peridotite and pyroxenite melting parameters, as well as pseudo-ternary projections of the primary Hainan basaltic magmas with experimental data suggest that the primary magmas were partial melts of silica-deficient pyroxenitic lithologies with peridotite residue. The heterogeneous geochemical and lithological compositions of the Hainan basalts indicate that recycled sedimentary carbonates and siliceous rocks were important constituents in their mantle source. Quantitative modeling reveals that the addition of 1–10% subducted sediments into the source of the Hainan basalts closely reproduces their Zn–Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic values. The source component with the heaviest Zn isotopic composition measured for the Hainan basalt samples could have contained more than 9% recycled carbonate. Our findings provide insights into the role of subducted materials to mantle heterogeneity and highlight the contribution of subducted sedimentary carbonates in the deep recycling of oceanic slabs, including—in the case of the Hainan mantle plume—recycled deep mantle (i.e., the mantle transition zone and lower mantle). Geodiversity has shaped and structured the Earth's surface at all spatio-temporal scales, not only through long-term processes but also through medium- and short-term processes. Geodiversity is, therefore, a key control and regulating variable in the overall development of landscapes and biodiversity. However, climate change and land use intensity are leading to major changes and disturbances in bio- and geodiversity. For sustainable ecosystem management, temporal, economically viable and standardized monitoring is needed to monitor and model the effects and changes in vegetation- and geodiversity. RS approaches have been used for this purpose for decades. However, to understand in detail how RS approaches capture vegetation- and geodiversity, the aim of this paper is to describe how five features of vegetation- and geodiversity are captured using RS technologies, namely: (i) trait diversity, (ii) phylogenetic/genese diversity, (iii) structural diversity, (iv) taxonomic diversity and (v) functional diversity. Trait diversity is essential for establishing the other four. Traits provide a crucial interface between in situ, close-range, aerial and space-based RS monitoring approaches. The trait approach allows complex data of different types and formats to be linked using the latest semantic data integration techniques, which will enable ecosystem integrity monitoring and modelling in the future. The incoming solar radiation arriving the Earth's surface is strongly influenced by surface terrain. Conventional global weather forecast models, with grid scales of about 10 km, lack the resolution to accurately capture terrain-induced variations. We devised a new parameterization method to incorporate high-resolution subgrid-scale terrain data into grid-scale radiative flux calculations without averaging or smoothing topographic features. Utilizing a 15″ digital elevation model from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, we computed subgrid-scale data and transformed them onto the Korean Integrated Model's cubed sphere grid using a Voronoi diagram to maintain geographical accuracy. The new scheme was initially evaluated through offline ideal tests and case studies. The results demonstrated that the scheme accurately captured the variations in downward shortwave flux, keeping the mean flux on a global scale nearly constant. The global mean flux difference in all skies was less than 0.01%. Statistical analyses demonstrated improved temperature and geopotential height predictions compared to reanalysis data. The anomaly correlation coefficient for East Asia at 850 hPa increased by 0.036 at 240 forecast hours. Overall, the anomaly correlation coefficient and root mean square error of geopotential height and temperature showed enhancements, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere and tropics. Importantly, the scheme introduces negligible additional memory and CPU requirements, making it suitable for both regional and global models. Alternating current can result in flickering—or pulsing—in the brightness of light emitted by luminaires. Lighting flicker typically occurs in the range of 100 to 140 cycles per second (Hz), which is too fast for visual perception by most organisms. However, evidence indicates that many organisms perceive flicker with non-visual photoreceptors present on the retinas. Exposure to flickering lights at night disrupts the circadian rhythm of organisms, leading to symptoms similar to blue light exposure at night. The traditional method for detecting flickering is with a flickermeter held near a single light. In this paper, we explore the use of high-speed camera data in the collection of temporal profiles for groups of luminaires simultaneously at distances ranging from several meters to several kilometers. Temporal profiles are extracted for individual lighting features and the full scene. The identification of luminaire types is based on their spectral signatures. With the camera data, it is possible to identify flickering and non-flickering lights, to determine the flicker frequency, to calculate percent flicker and the flicker index, and to identify groups of lights whose flickers are synchronized. Both flickering and non-flickering luminaires can be found for LED, metal halide, fluorescent, and compact fluorescent lights. To date, flickering has been detected in all of the incandescent, high-pressure sodium, and low-pressure sodium luminaires that we measured. We found that flicker synchronization is often present for lights installed within a single facility and also for strings of streetlights. We also found that flicker exposure can come from the light reflected off of the earth's surface. Luminaires designed to illuminate large areas often saturate high-speed camera data collection. This saturation can be reduced or eliminated using neutral density filters on the camera. Published experimental data on the impacts of flicker on organisms remains sparse. Many studies have drawn inferences on the impacts of spectral and lighting brightness on organisms without controlling for flicker. Our conclusion is that lighting flicker is a type of light pollution. Forecasting the generation of solar power plants (SPPs) requires taking into account meteorological parameters that influence the difference between the solar irradiance at the top of the atmosphere calculated with high accuracy and the solar irradiance at the tilted plane of the solar panel on the Earth's surface. One of the key factors is cloudiness, which can be presented not only as a percentage of the sky area covered by clouds but also many additional parameters, such as the type of clouds, the distribution of clouds across atmospheric layers, and their height. The use of machine learning algorithms to forecast the generation of solar power plants requires retrospective data over a long period and formalising the features; however, retrospective data with detailed information about cloudiness are normally recorded in the natural language format. This paper proposes an algorithm for processing such records to convert them into a binary feature vector. Experiments conducted on data from a real solar power plant showed that this algorithm increases the accuracy of short-term solar irradiance forecasts by 5–15%, depending on the quality metric used. At the same time, adding features makes the model less transparent to the user, which is a significant drawback from the point of view of explainable artificial intelligence. Therefore, the paper uses an additive explanation algorithm based on the Shapley vector to interpret the model's output. It is shown that this approach allows the machine learning model to explain why it generates a particular forecast, which will provide a greater level of trust in intelligent information systems in the power industry. A thermodynamic energy budget analysis is applied to the lowest model level of the ERA5 dataset to investigate the mechanisms that drive the growth and decay of extreme positive surface air temperature (SAT) events. Regional and seasonal variation of the mechanisms are investigated. For each grid point on Earth's surface, a separate composite analysis is performed for extreme SAT events, which are days when temperature anomaly exceeds the 95th percentile. Among the dynamical terms, horizontal temperature advection of the climatological temperature by the anomalous wind dominates SAT anomaly growth over the extratropics, while nonlinear horizontal temperature advection is a major factor over high-latitude regions and the adiabatic warming is important over major mountainous regions. During the decay period, advection of the climatological temperature by the anomalous wind sustains the warming while nonlinear advection becomes the dominant decay mechanism. Among diabatic heating processes, vertical mixing contributes to the SAT anomaly growth over most locations while longwave radiative cooling hinders SAT anomaly growth, especially over the ocean. However, over arid regions during summer, longwave heating largely contributes to SAT anomaly growth while the vertical mixing dampens the SAT anomaly growth. During the decay period, both longwave cooling and vertical mixing contribute to SAT anomaly decay with more pronounced effects over the ocean and land, respectively. These regional and seasonal characteristics of the processes that drive extreme SAT events can serve as a benchmark for understanding the future behavior of extreme weather. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
