Search

Star formation primarily occurs in filaments where magnetic fields are expected to be dynamically important. The largest and densest filaments trace spiral structure within galaxies. Over a dozen of these dense ($\sim$10$^4$\,cm$^{-3}$) and long ($>$10\,pc) filaments have been found within the Milky Way, and they are often referred to as "bones." Until now, none of these bones have had their magnetic field resolved and mapped in their entirety. We introduce the SOFIA legacy project FIELDMAPS which has begun mapping $\sim$10 of these Milky Way bones using the HAWC+ instrument at 214\,$\mu$m and 18$\farcs$2 resolution. Here we present a first result from this survey on the $\sim$60\,pc long bone G47. Contrary to some studies of dense filaments in the Galactic plane, we find that the magnetic field is often not perpendicular to the spine (i.e., the center-line of the bone). Fields tend to be perpendicular in the densest areas of active star formation and more parallel or random in other areas. The average field is neither parallel or perpendicular to the Galactic plane nor the bone. The magnetic field strengths along the spine typically vary from $\sim$20 to $\sim$100\,$\mu$G. Magnetic fields tend to be strong enough to suppress collapse along much of the bone, but for areas that are most active in star formation, the fields are notably less able to resist gravitational collapse., Comment: Accepted to ApJL; typo in author list metadata corrected

We present comprehensive spectroscopic and photometric analyses of the intermediate luminosity Type Iax supernova (SN Iax) 2019muj based on multi-band datasets observed through the framework of the OISTER target-of-opportunity program. SN 2019muj exhibits almost identical characteristics with the subluminous SNe Iax 2008ha and 2010ae in terms of the observed spectral features and the light curve evolution at the early phase, except for the peak luminosity. The long-term observations unveil the flattening light curves at the late time as seen in a luminous SN Iax 2014dt. This can be explained by the existence of an inner dense and optically-thick component possibly associated with a bound white dwarf remnant left behind the explosion. We demonstrate that the weak deflagration model with a wide range of the explosion parameters can reproduce the late-phase light curves of other SNe Iax. Observations indicate that molecular clouds are strongly magnetized, and that magnetic fields influence the formation of stars. A key observation supporting the conclusion that molecular clouds are significantly magnetized is that the orientation of their internal structure is closely related to that of the magnetic field. At low column densities the structure aligns parallel with the field, whereas at higher column densities, the gas structure is typically oriented perpendicular to magnetic fields, with a transition at visual extinctions $A_V\gtrsim{}3~\rm{}mag$. Here we use far-infrared polarimetric observations from the HAWC+ polarimeter on SOFIA to report the discovery of a further transition in relative orientation, i.e., a return to parallel alignment at $A_V\gtrsim{}21~\rm{}mag$ in parts of the Serpens South cloud. This transition appears to be caused by gas flow and indicates that magnetic supercriticality sets in near $A_V\gtrsim{}21~\rm{}mag$, allowing gravitational collapse and star cluster formation to occur even in the presence of relatively strong magnetic fields., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, Published in Nature Astronomy (August 2020). Using wide-field $^{13}$CO ($J=1-0$) data taken with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope, we investigate cloud structures of the infrared dark cloud complex in M17 with SCIMES. In total, we identified 118 clouds that contain 11 large clouds with radii larger than 1 pc. The clouds are mainly distributed in the two representative velocity ranges of 10 $-$ 20 km s$^{-1}$ and 30 $-$ 40 km s$^{-1}$. By comparing with the ATLASGAL catalog, we found that the majority of the $^{13}$CO clouds with 10 $-$ 20 km s$^{-1}$ and 30 $-$ 40 km s$^{-1}$ are likely located at distances of 2 kpc (Sagittarius arm) and 3 kpc (Scutum arm), respectively. Analyzing the spatial configuration of the identified clouds and their velocity structures, we attempt to reveal the origin of the cloud structure in this region. Here we discuss three possibilities: (1) overlapping with different velocities, (2) cloud oscillation, and (3) cloud-cloud collision. From the position-velocity diagrams, we found spatially-extended faint emission between $\sim$ 20 km s$^{-1}$ and $\sim$ 35 km s$^{-1}$, which is mainly distributed in the spatially-overlapped areas of the clouds. We also found that in some areas where clouds with different velocities overlapped, the magnetic field orientation changes abruptly. The distribution of the diffuse emission in the position-position-velocity space and the bending magnetic fields appear to favor the cloud-cloud collision scenario compared to other scenarios. In the cloud-cloud collision scenario, we propose that two $\sim$35 km s$^{-1}$ foreground clouds are colliding with clouds at $\sim$20 km s$^{-1}$ with a relative velocity of 15 km s$^{-1}$. These clouds may be substructures of two larger clouds having velocities of $\sim$ 35 km s$^{-1}$ ($\gtrsim 10^3 $ M$_{\odot}$) and $\sim$ 20 km s$^{-1}$ ($\gtrsim 10^4 $ M$_{\odot}$), respectively., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ

The non-uniform distribution of gas and protostars in molecular clouds is caused by combinations of various physical processes that are difficult to separate. We explore this non-uniform distribution in the M17 molecular cloud complex that hosts massive star formation activity using the $^{12}$CO ($J=1-0$) and $^{13}$CO ($J=1-0$) emission lines obtained with the Nobeyama 45m telescope. Differences in clump properties such as mass, size, and gravitational boundedness reflect the different evolutionary stages of the M17-H{\scriptsize II} and M17-IRDC clouds. Clumps in the M17-H{\scriptsize II} cloud are denser, more compact, and more gravitationally bound than those in M17-IRDC. While M17-H{\scriptsize II} hosts a large fraction of very dense gas (27\%) that has column density larger than the threshold of $\sim$ 1 g cm$^{-2}$ theoretically predicted for massive star formation, this very dense gas is deficient in M17-IRDC (0.46\%). Our HCO$^+$ ($J=1-0$) and HCN ($J=1-0$) observations with the TRAO 14m telescope, {\nlqb trace all gas with column density higher than $3\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$}, confirm the deficiency of high density ($\gtrsim 10^5$ cm$^{-3}$) gas in M17-IRDC. We carried out mapping observations toward three nearby molecular clouds, Orion A, Aquila Rift, and M17, using a new 100 GHz receiver, FOREST, on the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. In the present paper, we describe the details of the data obtained such as intensity calibration, data sensitivity, angular resolution, and velocity resolution. Each target contains at least one high-mass star-forming region. The target molecular lines were $^{12}$CO ($J = 1 - 0$), $^{13}$CO ($J = 1 - 0$), C$^{18}$O ($J = 1 - 0$), N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$), and CCS ($J_N=8_7-7_6$), with which we covered the density range of 10$^2$ cm$^{-3}$ to 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$ with an angular resolution of $\sim 20\arcsec$ and a velocity resolution of $\sim$ 0.1 km s$^{-1}$. Assuming the representative distances of 414 pc, 436 pc, and 2.1 kpc, the maps of Orion A, Aquila Rift, and M17 cover most of the densest parts with areas of about 7 pc $\times$ 15 pc, 7 pc $\times$ 7 pc, and 36 pc $\times$ 18 pc, respectively. On the basis of the $^{13}$CO column density distribution, the total molecular masses are derived to be $3.86 \times 10^4 M_\odot$, $2.67 \times 10^4 M_\odot$, and $8.1\times 10^5 M_\odot$ for Orion A, Aquila Rift, and M17, respectively. For all the clouds, the H$_2$ column density exceeds the theoretical threshold for high-mass star formation of $\gtrsim$ 1 g cm$^{-2}$, only toward the regions which contain current high-mass star-forming sites. For other areas, further mass accretion or dynamical compression would be necessary for future high-mass star formation. This is consistent with the current star formation activity. Using the $^{12}$CO data, we demonstrate that our data have enough capability to identify molecular outflows, and for Aquila Rift, we identify 4 new outflow candidates. We conducted near-infrared (JHKs) imaging polarimetry toward the infrared dark cloud (IRDC) M17 SWex, including almost all of the IRDC filaments as well as its outskirts, with the polarimeter SIRPOL on the IRSF 1.4 m telescope. We revealed the magnetic fields of M17 SWex with our polarization-detected sources that were selected by some criteria based on their near-IR colors and the column densities toward them, which were derived from the Herschel data. The selected sources indicate not only that the ordered magnetic field is perpendicular to the cloud elongation as a whole, but also that at both ends of the elongated cloud the magnetic field appears to bent toward its central part, i.e., large-scale hourglass-shaped magnetic field perpendicular to the cloud elongation. In addition to this general trend, the elongations of the filamentary subregions within the dense parts of the cloud appear to be mostly perpendicular to their local magnetic fields, while the magnetic fields of the outskirts appear to follow the thin filaments that protrude from the dense parts. The magnetic strengths were estimated to be ~70-300 microG in the subregions, of which lengths and average number densities are ~3-9 pc and ~2-7x10^3 cm^{-3}, respectively, by the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method with the angular dispersion of our polarization data and the velocity dispersion derived from the C^{18}O (J=1-0) data obtained by the Nobeyama 45 m telescope. We present the results of mapping observations toward an outflow-shocked region, OMC-2 FIR 4 using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. We observed the area in $^{13}$CO ($J=1-0$), C$^{18}$O ($J=1-0$), N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$), CCS ($J_N=8_7-7_6$), HCO$^+$ ($J=1-0$), H$^{13}$CO$^+$ ($J=1-0$), HN$^{13}$C ($J=1-0$), H$^{13}$CN ($J=1-0$), DNC ($J=1-0$), N$_2$D$^+$ ($J=1-0$), and DC$_3$N ($J=9-8$). We detected a dense molecular clump that contains FIR 4/5. We also detected in $^{13}$CO blueshifted and redshifted components driven presumably by protostellar outflows in this region. The axes of the FIR 3 and VLA 13 outflows, projected on the plane of the sky, appear to point toward the FIR 4 clump, suggesting that the clump may be compressed by protostellar outflows from Class I sources, FIR 3 and VLA 13. Applying the hyperfine fit of N$_2$H$^+$ lines, we estimated the excitation temperature to be $\sim$ 20 K. The high excitation temperature is consistent with the fact that the clump contains protostars. The CCS emission was detected in this region for the first time. Its abundance is estimated to be a few $\times 10^{-12}$, indicating that the region is chemically evolved at $\sim 10^5$ years, which is comparable to the typical lifetime of the Class I protostars. This timescale is consistent with the scenario that star formation in FIR 4 is triggered by dynamical compression of the protostellar outflows. The [HNC]/[HCN] ratio is evaluated to be $\sim 0.5$ in the dense clump and the outflow lobes, whereas it is somewhat larger in the envelope of the dense clump. The small [HNC]/[HCN] ratio indicates that the HNC formation was prevented due to high temperatures. Such high temperatures seem to be consistent with the scenario that either protostellar radiation or outflow compression, or both, affected the thermal properties of this region., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, PASJ in press

A survey of molecular cores covering the infrared dark cloud known as the M17 southwest extension (M17 SWex) has been carried out with the 45 m Nobeyama Radio Telescope. Based on the N2H+ (J= 1-0) data obtained, we have identified 46 individual cores whose masses are in the range 43 to 3026 Mo. We examined the relationship between the physical parameters of the cores and those of young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with the cores found in the literature. The comparison of the virial mass and the core mass indicates that most of the cores can be gravitationally stable if we assume a large external pressure. Among the 46 cores, we found four massive cores with YSOs. They have large mass of >~ 1000Mo and line width of >~ 2.5 km s^-1 which are similar to those of clumps forming high mass stars. However, previous studies have shown that there is no active massive star formation in this region. Recent measurements of near-infrared polarization infer that the magnetic field around M17 SWex is likely to be strong enough to support the cores against self-gravity. We therefore suggest that the magnetic field may prevent the cores from collapsing, causing the low-level of massive star formation in M17 SWex., Comment: 12 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan)

The RCW 106 molecular cloud complex is an active massive star-forming region where a ministarburst is taking place. We examined its magnetic structure by near-IR polarimetric observations with the imaging polarimeter SIRPOL on the IRSF 1.4 m telescope. The global magnetic field is nearly parallel to the direction of the Galactic plane and the cloud elongation. We derived the magnetic field strength of $\sim100$-$1600~\mu$G for 71 clumps with the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. We also evaluated the magnetic stability of these clumps and found massive star-forming clumps tend to be magnetically unstable and gravitationally unstable. Therefore, we propose a new criterion to search for massive star-forming clumps. These details suggest that the process enhancing the clump density without an increase of the magnetic flux is essential for the formation of massive stars and the necessity for accreting mass along the magnetic field lines., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJL

We present results of the mapping observations covering a large area of 1 square degree around W40 and Serpens South carried out in the 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0), C18O (J=1-0), CCS (J_{N}=8_{7}-7_{6}), and N_2H+ (J=1-0) emission lines with the 45 m Nobeyama Radio Telescope. W40 is a blistered Hii region, and Serpens South is an infrared dark cloud accompanied by a young cluster. The relationship between these two regions which are separated by ~20' on the sky has not been clear so far. We found that the C18O emission is distributed smoothly throughout the W40 and Serpens South regions, and it seems that the two regions are physically connected. We divided the C18O emission into four groups in terms of the spatial distributions around the HII region which we call 5, 6, 7, and 8 km s^{-1} components according to their typical LSR velocities, and propose a three-dimensional model of the W40 and Serpens South complex. We found two elliptical structures in position-velocity diagrams, which can be explained as a part of two expanding shells. One of the shells is the small inner shell just around the HII region, and the other is the large outer shell corresponding to the boundary of the HII region. Dense gas associated with the young cluster of Serpens South is likely to be located at the surface of the outer shell, indicating that the natal clump of the young cluster is interacting with the outer shell being compressed by the expansion of the shell. L1551 is chosen because it is relatively isolated in the Taurus molecular cloud shielded from FUV photons, providing an ideal environment for studying the target properties. Our observations cover ~40'x40' with resolution ~30", which are the maps with highest spatial dynamical range to date. We derive the X(13CO)/X(C18O) value on the sub-parsec scales in the range of ~3-27 with a mean value of 8.0+-2.8. Comparing to the visual extinction map derived from the Herschel observations, we found that the abundance ratio reaches its maximum at low Av (i.e., Av ~ 1-4mag), and decreases to the typical solar system value of 5.5 inside L1551 MC. The high X(13CO)/X(C18O) value at the boundary of the cloud is most likely due to the selective FUV photodissociation of C18O. This is in contrast with Orion-A where its internal OB stars keep the abundance ratio at a high level greater than ~10. In addition, we explore the variation of the X-factor, because it is an uncertain but widely used quantity in extragalactic studies. We found that X-factor is proportional to N(H2)^1.0 which is consistent with previous simulations. The stellar distribution derived from an $H$ and $K_{\mathrm S}$-band survey of the central region of our Galaxy is compared with the Fe XXV K$\alpha$ (6.7 keV) line intensity observed with the Suzaku satellite. The survey is for the Galactic coordinates $|l| \lesssim 3^{\circ}.0$ and $|b| \lesssim 1^{\circ}.0$ (equivalent to 0.8 kpc $\times$ 0.3 kpc for $R_0 = 8$ kpc), and the number-density distribution $N(K_{\mathrm S,0}; l, b)$ of stars is derived using the extinction-corrected magnitude $K_{\mathrm S,0}=10.5$. This is deep enough to probe the old red giant population and in turn to estimate the ($l$, $b$) distribution of faint X-ray point sources such as coronally active binaries and cataclysmic variables. In the Galactic plane ($b=0^{\circ}$), $N(10.5; l, b)$ increases to the Galactic center as $|l|^{-0.30 \pm 0.03}$ in the range of $-0^{\circ}.1 \geq l \geq -0^{\circ}.7$, but this increase is significantly slower than the increase ($|l|^{-0.44 \pm 0.02}$ ) of the Fe XXV K$\alpha$ line intensity. If normalized with the ratios in the outer region $1^{\circ}.5 \leq |l| \leq 2^{\circ}.8$, where faint X-ray point sources are argued to dominate the diffuse Galactic X-ray ridge emission, the excess of the Fe XXV K$\alpha$ line intensity over the stellar number density is at least a factor of two at $|l| = 0^{\circ}.1$. We have made near-infrared (JHKs) imaging polarimetry of a bright-rimmed cloud (SFO 74). The polarization vector maps clearly show that the magnetic field in the layer just behind the bright rim is running along the rim, quite different from its ambient magnetic field. The direction of the magnetic field just behind the tip rim is almost perpendicular to that of the incident UV radiation, and the magnetic field configuration appears to be symmetric as a whole with respect to the cloud symmetry axis. We estimated the column and number densities in the two regions (just inside and far inside the tip rim), and then derived the magnetic field strength, applying the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The estimated magnetic field strength just inside the tip rim, ~90 uG, is stronger than that far inside, ~30 uG. This suggests that the magnetic field strength just inside the tip rim is enhanced by the UV radiation induced shock. The shock increases the density within the top layer around the tip, and thus increases the strength of the magnetic field. The magnetic pressure seems to be comparable to the turbulent one just inside the tip rim, implying a significant contribution of the magnetic field to the total internal pressure. The mass-to-flux ratio was estimated to be close to the critical value just inside the tip rim. The Serpens South infrared dark cloud consists of several filamentary ridges, some of which fragment into dense clumps. On the basis of CCS ($J_N=4_3-3_2$), HC$_3$N ($J=5-4$), N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$), and SiO ($J=2-1, v=0$) observations, we investigated the kinematics and chemical evolution of these filamentary ridges. We find that CCS is extremely abundant along the main filament in the protocluster clump. We emphasize that Serpens South is the first cluster-forming region where extremely-strong CCS emission is detected. The CCS-to-N$_2$H$^+$ abundance ratio is estimated to be about 0.5 toward the protocluster clump, whereas it is about 3 in the other parts of the main filament. We identify six dense ridges with different $V_{\rm LSR}$. These ridges appear to converge toward the protocluster clump, suggesting that the collisions of these ridges may have triggered cluster formation. The collisions presumably happened within a few $\times \ 10^5$ yr because CCS is abundant only in such a short time. The short lifetime agrees with the fact that the number fraction of Class I objects, whose typical lifetime is $0.4 \times \ 10^5$ yr, is extremely high as about 70 percent in the protocluster clump. In the northern part, two ridges appear to have partially collided, forming a V-shape clump. We present the results of N$_2$H$^+$ ($J=1-0$) observations toward Serpens South, the nearest cluster-forming, infrared dark cloud. The physical quantities are derived by fitting the hyperfine structure of N$_2$H$^+$. The Herschel and 1.1-mm continuum maps show that a pc-scale filament fragments into three clumps with radii of $0.1-0.2$ pc and masses of $40-230M_\odot$. We find that the clumps contain smaller-scale ($\sim 0.04$ pc) structures, i.e., dense cores. We identify 70 cores by applying CLUMPFIND to the N$_2$H$^+$ data cube. In the central cluster-forming clump, the excitation temperature and line-width tend to be large, presumably due to protostellar outflow feedback and stellar radiation. However, for all the clumps, the virial ratios are evaluated to be $0.1-0.3$, indicating that the internal motions play only a minor role in the clump support. The clumps exhibit no free-fall, but low-velocity infall, and thus the clumps should be supported by additional forces. The most promising force is the globally-ordered magnetic field observed toward this region. We propose that the Serpens South filament was close to magnetically-critical and ambipolar diffusion triggered the cluster formation. We find that the northern clump, which shows no active star formation, has a mass and radius comparable to the central cluster-forming clump, and therefore, it is a likely candidate of a {\it pre-protocluster clump}. The initial condition for cluster formation is likely to be a magnetically-supported clump of cold, quiescent gas. The origin of the Galactic center diffuse X-ray emission (GCDX) is still under intense investigation. In particular, the interpretation of the hot (kT ~ 7 keV) component of the GCDX, characterised by the strong Fe 6.7 keV line emission, has been contentious. If the hot component originates from a truly diffuse interstellar plasma, not a collection of unresolved point sources, such plasma cannot be gravitationally bound, and its regeneration would require a huge amount of energy. Here we show that the spatial distribution of the GCDX does NOT correlate with the number density distribution of an old stellar population traced by near-infrared light, strongly suggesting a significant contribution of the diffuse interstellar plasma. Contributions of the old stellar population to the GCDX are implied to be about 50 % and 20 % in the Nuclear stellar disk and Nuclear star cluster, respectively. For the Nuclear stellar disk, a scale height of 0.32 +- 0.02 deg is obtained for the first time from the stellar number density profiles. We also show the results of the extended near-infrared polarimetric observations in the central 3 deg * 2 deg region of our Galaxy, and confirm that the GCDX region is permeated by a large scale, toroidal magnetic field as previously claimed. We present the results of CO ($J=3-2$) and HCO$^+$ ($J=4-3$) mapping observations toward a nearby embedded cluster, Serpens South, using the ASTE 10 m telescope. Our CO ($J=3-2$) map reveals that many outflows are crowded in the dense cluster-forming clump that can be recognized as a HCO$^+$ clump with a size of $\sim$ 0.2 pc and mass of $\sim$ 80 M$_\odot$. The clump contains several subfragments with sizes of $\sim$ 0.05 pc. By comparing the CO ($J=3-2$) map with the 1.1 mm dust continuum image taken by AzTEC on ASTE, we find that the spatial extents of the outflow lobes are sometimes anti-correlated with the distribution of the dense gas and some of the outflow lobes apparently collide with the dense gas. The total outflow mass, momentum, and energy are estimated at 0.6 $M_\odot$, 8 $M_\odot$ km s$^{-1}$, and 64 $M_\odot$ km$^2$ s$^{-2}$, respectively. The energy injection rate due to the outflows is comparable to the turbulence dissipation rate in the clump, implying that the protostellar outflows can maintain the supersonic turbulence in this region. The total outflow energy seems only about 10 percent the clump gravitational energy. We present a large-scale view of the magnetic field in the central 2deg * 2deg region of our Galaxy. The polarization of point sources has been measured in the J, H, and Ks bands using the near-infrared polarimetric camera SIRPOL on the 1.4 m telescope IRSF. Comparing the Stokes parameters between high extinction stars and relatively low extinction ones, we obtain polarization originating from magnetically aligned dust grains in the central few-hundred pc of our Galaxy. We find that near the Galactic plane, the magnetic field is almost parallel to the Galactic plane (i.e., toroidal configuration) but at high Galactic latitudes (| b | > 0.4deg), the field is nearly perpendicular to the plane (i.e., poloidal configuration). We made deep NIR imaging polarimetry toward the Serpens cloud core. The polarization vector maps enable us to newly detect 24 small IR reflection nebulae with YSOs. Polarization measurements of NIR point sources indicate an hourglass-shaped magnetic field, of which symmetry axis is nearly perpendicular to the elongation of the C18O (J=1-0) or submillimeter continuum emission. The bright part of C18O (J=1-0), submillimeter continuum cores as well as many class 0/I objects are located just toward the constriction region of the hourglass-shaped magnetic field. Applying the CF method, the magnetic field strength was estimated to be ~100 muG, suggesting that the ambient region of the Serpens cloud core is moderately magnetically supercritical. These suggest that the Serpens cloud core first contracted along the magnetic field to be an elongated cloud, which is perpendicular to the magnetic field, and that then the central part contracted cross the magnetic field due to the high density in the central region of the cloud core, where star formation is actively continuing. Comparison of this magnetic field with the previous observations of molecular gas and large-scale outflows suggests a possibility that the cloud dynamics is controlled by the magnetic field, protostellar outflows and gravitational inflows. This appears to be in good agreement with the outflow-driven turbulence model and implies the importance of the magnetic field to continuous star formation in the center region of the cluster forming region., Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

With references to recent observational results on the nebula IC59, we applied our previously developed Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code which is based on Radiative Driven Implosion (RDI) model, to investigate the possible formation mechanism for the observed morphological structures of differently shaped BRCs. The simulation results confirmed the existence of the 4th type morphology of BRCs -- type M BRC. We are able to find the necessary condition for the appearance of the type M BRC based on the fact that the simulated physical properties of the cloud are consistent with observations on IC59. More importantly, the prospect of RDI triggered star formation by RDI model in all of the observed type M BRCs is ruthlessly eliminated., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

We have determined interstellar extinction law toward the Galactic center (GC) at the wavelength from 1.2 to 8.0 micron, using point sources detected in the IRSF/SIRIUS near-infrared survey and those in the 2MASS and Spitzer/IRAC/GLIMPSE II catalogs. The central region |l| < 3deg and |b| < 1deg has been surveyed in the J, H and Ks bands with the IRSF telescope and the SIRIUS camera whose filters are similar to the Mauna Kea Observatories (MKO) near-infrared photometric system. Combined with the GLIMPSE II point source catalog, we made Ks versus (Ks - lambda) color-magnitude diagrams where lambda = 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 micron. The Ks magnitudes of bulge red clump stars and the (Ks - lambda) colors of red giant branches are used as a tracer of the reddening vector in the color-magnitude diagrams. From these magnitudes and colors, we have obtained the ratios of total to selective extinction A(Ks)/E(Ks-lambda) for the four IRAC bands. Combined with A(lambda)/A(Ks) for the J and H bands derived by Nishiyama et al., we obtain A(J):A(H):A(Ks):A([3.6]):A([4.5]):A([5.8]):A([8.0])=3.02:1.73:1:0.50:0.39:0.36:0.43 for the line of sight toward the GC. This confirms the flattening of the extinction curve at lambda > 3 micron from a simple extrapolation of the power-law extinction at shorter wavelengths, in accordance with recent studies. The extinction law in the 2MASS JHKs bands has also been calculated, and a good agreement with that in the MKO system is found. In nearby molecular clouds and diffuse interstellar medium, the lack of reliable measurements of the total to selective extinction ratios hampers unambiguous determination of the extinction law; however, observational results toward these lines of sight cannot be reconciled with a single extinction law., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

In the J, H, and Ks bands survey of the the Galactic Center region over an area of 2deg x 5deg, we have found many dark clouds, among which a distinguished chain of dark clouds can be identified with a quiescent CO cloud. The distances of the clouds is estimated to be 3.2-4.2 kpc, corresponding to the Norma arm by our new method to determine distance to dark clouds using the cumulative number of stars against J-Ks colors. Adopting these estimated distances, the size is about 70 pc in length and the total mass of the cloud is 6x10^4 M_solar. Three compact HII regions harbor in the cloud, indicating that star forming activities are going on at the cores of the quiescent CO cloud on the spiral arm., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present a polarimetric map of a 20'x20' area toward the Galactic center. The polarization of point sources has been measured in the J, H, and Ks bands using the near-infrared polarimetric camera SIRPOL on the 1.4 m telescope IRSF. One percent or better accuracy of polarization degree is achieved for sources with J<14.5, H<13.5, and Ks<12.0. Comparing the Stokes parameters between high extinction stars and relatively low extinction ones, we have obtained a polarization originating from magnetically aligned dust grains at the central region of our Galaxy of at most 1-2 kpc. The distribution of the position angles shows a peak at about 20 deg, nearly parallel to the Galactic plane, suggesting a toroidal magnetic configuration. The derived direction of the magnetic field is in good agreement with that obtained from far-infrared/submillimeter observations, which detect polarized thermal emission from dust in the molecular clouds at the Galactic center. We present a method of mapping dust column density in dark clouds by using near-infrared scattered light. Our observations of the Lupus 3 dark cloud indicate that there is a well defined relation between (1) the H-Ks color of an individual star behind the cloud, i.e., dust column density, and (2) the surface brightness of scattered light toward the star in each of the J, H, and Ks bands. In the relation, the surface brightnesses increase at low H-Ks colors, then saturate and decrease with increasing H-Ks. Using a simple one-dimensional radiation transfer model, we derive empirical equations which plausibly represent the observed relationship between the surface brightness and the dust column density. By using the empirical equations, we estimate dust column density of the cloud for any directions toward which even no background stars are seen. We obtain a dust column density map with a pixel scale of 2.3 x 2.3 arcsec^2 and a large dynamic range up to Av = 50 mag. Compared to the previous studies by Juvela et al., this study is the first to use color excess of the background stars for calibration of the empirical relationship and to apply the empirical relationship beyond the point where surface brightness starts to decrease with increasing column density.

We have carried out near-IR/optical observations to examine star formation toward a bright-rimmed cometary globule (BRC37) facing the exciting star(s) of an HII region (IC1396) containing an IRAS source, which is considered to be an intermediate-mass protostar. With slit-less spectroscopy we detected ten H_alpha emission stars around the globule, six of which are near the tip of the globule and are aligned along the direction to the exciting stars. There is evidence that this alignment was originally towards an O9.5 star, but has evolved to align towards a younger O6 star when that formed. Near-IR and optical photometry suggests that four of these six stars are low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) with masses of ~0.4 M_sun. Their estimated ages of ~1 Myr indicate that they were formed at the tip in advance of the formation of the IRAS source. Therefore, it is likely that sequential star formation has been taking place along the direction from the exciting stars towards the IRAS source, due to the UV impact of the exciting star(s). Interestingly, one faint, H_alpha emission star, which is the closest to the exciting star(s), seems to be a young brown dwarf that was formed by the UV impact in advance of the formation of other YSOs at the tip., Comment: main text (30 pages) + online material, 14 figures, published in AJ

We have determined the ratios of total to selective extinction directly from observations in the optical V band and near-infrared J band toward the Galactic center. The OGLE (Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment) Galactic bulge fields have been observed with the SIRIUS camera on the IRSF telescope, and we obtain A(V)/E(V-J)=1.251+-0.014 and A(J)/E(V-J)=0.225+-0.007. From these ratios, we have derived A(J)/A(V) = 0.188+-0.005; if we combine A(J)/A(V) with the near-infrared extinction ratios obtained by Nishiyama et al. for more reddened fields near the Galactic center, we get A(V) : A(J) : A(H) : A(Ks) = 1 : 0.188 : 0.108 : 0.062, which implies steeply declining extinction toward the longer wavelengths. In particular, it is striking that the Ks band extinction is \approx 1/16 of the visual extinction A(V) much smaller than one tenth of A(V) so far employed., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We have made a new survey of emission-line stars in the W5E HII region to investigate the population of PMS stars near the OB stars by using the Wide Field Grism Spectrograph 2 (WFGS2). A total of 139 H-alpha emission stars were detected and their g'i'-photometry was performed. The spatial distribution of them shows three aggregates, i.e., two aggregates near the bright-rimmed clouds at the edge of W5E HII region (BRC 13 and BRC 14) and one near the exciting O7V star. The age and mass of each H-alpha star were estimated from the extinction corrected color-magnitude diagram and theoretical evolutionary tracks. We found, for the first time in this region, that the young stars near the exciting star are systematically older (4 Myr) than those near the edge of the HII region (1 Myr). This result supports that the formation of stars proceed sequentially from the center of HII region to the eastern bright rim. We further suggest a possibility that the birth of low mass stars near the exciting star of HII region precede the production of massive OB stars in the pre-existing molecular cloud., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

We carried out deep and wide (about 8' x 8') JHKs imaging polarimetry in the southern region of the Eagle Nebula (M16). The polarization intensity map reveals that two YSOs with near-IR reflection nebulae are located at the tips of two famous molecular pillars (Pillars 1 and 2) facing toward the exciting stars of M16. The centrosymmetric polarization pattern are consistent with those around class I objects having circumstellar envelopes, confirming that star formation is now taking place at the two tips of the pillars under the influence of UV radiation from the exciting stars. We have found Herbig Ae/Be star candidates in the western region of the Magellanic Bridge. Using the near infrared camera SIRIUS and the 1.4 m telescope IRSF, we surveyed about 3.0 deg x 1.3 deg (24 deg < RA < 36 deg, -75 deg < Dec. < -73.7 deg) in the J, H, and Ks bands. On the basis of colors and magnitudes, about 200 Herbig Ae/Be star candidates are selected. Considering the contaminations by miscellaneous sources such as foreground stars and early-type dwarfs in the Magellanic Bridge, we estimate that about 80 (about 40%) of the candidates are likely to be Herbig Ae/Be stars. We also found one concentration of the candidates at the young star cluster NGC 796, strongly suggesting the existence of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Magellanic Bridge. This is the first detection of PMS star candidates in the Magellanic Bridge, and if they are genuine PMS stars, this could be direct evidence of recent star formation. However, the estimate of the number of Herbig Ae/Be stars depends on the fraction of classical Be stars, and thus a more precise determination of the Be star fraction or observations to differentiate between the Herbig Ae/Be stars and classical Be stars are required., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures. We have conducted J, H, and Ks imaging observations for the Coalsack Globule 2 with the SIRIUS infrared camera on the IRSF 1.4 m telescope at SAAO, and determined the color excess ratio, E(J-H)/E(H-Ks). The ratio is determined in the same photometric system as our previous study for the rho Oph and Cha clouds without any color transformation; this enables us to directly compare the near-infrared extinction laws among these regions. The current ratio E(J-H)/E(H-Ks) = 1.91 +- 0.01 for the extinction range 0.5 < E(J-H) <1.8 is significantly larger than the ratios for the rho Oph and Cha clouds (E(J-H)/E(H-Ks) = 1.60-1.69). This ratio corresponds to a large negative index alpha = 2.34 +- 0.01 when the wavelength dependence of extinction is approximated by a power law which might indicate little growth of dust grains, or larger abundance of dielectric non-absorbing components such as silicates, or both in this cloud. We also confirm that the color excess ratio for the Coalsack Globule 2 has a trend of increasing with decreasing optical depth, which is the same trend as the rho Oph and Cha clouds have., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, and 2 tables, ApJ

Using the Wide Field Grism Spectrograph 2 (WFGS2), we have carried out slit-less spectroscopy, g'r'i' photometry, and slit spectroscopy on the L1014 dense core. We detected three Halpha emission line stars. We interpret one as weak-line T Tauri star (WTTS) and the others as classical T Tauri stars (CTTS). Since their g'-i' colors and/or classified spectral types are consistent with those of T Tauri stars and two of them show less extinction than the cloud, these three stars are likely to be T Tauri stars associated with L1014. Adopting an age range for T Tauri stars, 1-10 Myr, the color-magnitude diagram suggests a distance of ~400-900 pc, rather than the previously assumed distance, 200 pc. This could strongly affect on the mass estimate of L1014-IRS, which is thought to be either a very young protostar or proto-brown dwarf., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Vol.58, No.5, October 25, 2006

On the basis of the near infrared observations of bulge red clump stars near the Galactic center, we have determined the galactocentric distance to be R_0 = 7.52 +- 0.10 (stat) +- 0.35 (sys) kpc. We observed the red clump stars at |l| < 1.0 deg and 0.7 deg < |b| < 1.0 deg with the IRSF 1.4 m telescope and the SIRIUS camera in the H and Ks bands. After extinction and population corrections, we obtained (m - M)_0 = 14.38 +- 0.03 (stat) +- 0.10 (sys). The statistical error is dominated by the uncertainty of the intrinsic local red clump stars' luminosity. The systematic error is estimated to be +- 0.10 including uncertainties in extinction and population correction, zero-point of photometry, and the fitting of the luminosity function of the red clump stars. Our result, R_0 = 7.52 kpc, is in excellent agreement with the distance determined geometrically with the star orbiting the massive black hole in the Galactic center. The recent result based on the spatial distribution of globular clusters is also consistent with our result. In addition, our study exhibits that the distance determination to the Galactic center with the red clump stars, even if the error of the population correction is taken into account, can achieve an uncertainty of about 5%, which is almost the same level as that in recent geometrical determinations., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ

We have carried out a deep near-infrared survey of a bright-rimmed molecular cloud, BRC 14 (IC 1848A). The 10 sigma limiting magnitude of the survey is 17.7 mag at the K-band. Seventy-four sources are classified as young stellar object (YSO) candidates based on the near-infrared color-color diagram. The faintest YSO candidates may have masses of an order of tenths of the solar mass, assuming the age of 1 Myr. We examined three values as indicators of star formation; fraction of the YSO candidates, extinctions of all sources, and near-infrared excesses of the YSO candidates. All indicators increase from outside of the rim to the center of the molecular cloud, which suggests that the formation of the low-mass stars in the BRC 14 region proceeds from outside to the center of the cloud., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, PASJ accepted

We have determined the ratios of total to selective extinction in the near-infrared bands (J, H, Ks) toward the Galactic center from the observations of the region |l| < 2.0deg and 0.5deg < |b| < 1.0deg with the IRSF telescope and the SIRIUS camera. Using the positions of red clump stars in color-magnitude diagrams as a tracer of the extinction and reddening, we determine the average of the ratios of total to selective extinction to be A(Ks)/E(H-Ks) = 1.44+-0.01, A(Ks)/E(J-Ks) = 0.494+-0.006, and A(H)/E(J-H) = 1.42+-0.02, which are significantly smaller than those obtained in previous studies. From these ratios, we estimate that A(J) : A(H) : A(Ks) = 1 : 0.573+-0.009 : 0.331+-0.004 and E(J-H)/E(H-Ks) = 1.72+-0.04, and we find that the power law A(lambda) \propto lambda^{-1.99+-0.02} is a good approximation over these wavelengths. Moreover, we find a small variation in A(Ks)/E(H-Ks) across our survey. An extensive photometric monitoring of KH 15D, an enigmatic variable in the young star cluster NGC 2264, has been conducted. Simultaneous and accurate near-infrared (JHKs-bands) photometry is presented between 2003 December and 2005 March covering most of the variable phase. The infrared variability is characterized by large-amplitude and long-lasting eclipse, as observed at optical. The period of variability is 48.3 +/- 0.2 days, the maximum photometric amplitude of variability is ~4.2 mag, and the eclipse duration is \~0.5 in phase units. These are consistent with the most recent period, amplitude, and duration at optical. The blueing of the J-H color (~0.16 mag) during the eclipse, which has been suggested before, is unambiguously confirmed; a similar blueing at H-Ks is less clear but is probably present at a similar level. The overall shape of the JHKs light curves is very similar to the optical one, including a fair time-symmetry and a less stable flux during the eclipse with a slight hump near the zero phase. Most of these variability features of KH 15D observed at near-infrared wavelengths can be explained with the recent model employing an eclipse by the inclined, precessing disk and an outer scattering region around a pre-main-sequence binary., Comment: 13pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters

On the basis of near-infrared imaging observations, we derived visual extinction (Av) distribution toward ten Bok globules through measurements of both the color excess (E_{H-K}) and the stellar density at J, H, and Ks (star count). Radial column density profiles for each globule were analyzed with the Bonnor-Ebert sphere model. Using the data of our ten globules and four globules in the literature, we investigated the stability of globules on the basis of xi_max, which characterizes the Bonnor-Ebert sphere as well as the stability of the equilibrium state against the gravitational collapse. We found that more than half of starless globules are located near the critical state (xi_max = 6.5 +/- 2). Thus, we suggest that a nearly critical Bonnor-Ebert sphere characterizes the typical density structure of starless globules. Remaining starless globules show clearly unstable states (xi_max > 10). Since unstable equilibrium states are not long maintained, we expect that these globules are on the way to gravitational collapse or that they are stabilized by non-thermal support. It was also found that all the star-forming globules show unstable solutions of xi_max >10, which is consistent with the fact that they have started gravitational collapse. We investigated the evolution of a collapsing gas sphere whose initial condition is a nearly critical Bonnor-Ebert sphere. We found that the column density profiles of the collapsing sphere mimic those of the static Bonnor-Ebert spheres in unstable equilibrium. The collapsing gas sphere resembles marginally unstable Bonnor-Ebert spheres for a long time. We found that the frequency distribution of xi_max for the observed starless globules is consistent with that from model calculations of the collapsing sphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. 39 pages in preprint format, including 10 figures. We present the result of a near-infrared (J H Ks) survey along the Galactic plane, -10.5deg < l < +10.5deg and b=+1.0deg, with the IRSF 1.4m telescope and the SIRIUS camera. Ks vs. H-Ks color-magnitude diagrams reveal a well-defined population of red clump (RC) stars whose apparent magnitude peak changes continuously along the Galactic plane, from Ks=13.4 at l=-10deg to Ks=12.2 at l=+10deg after dereddening. This variation can be explained by the bar-like structure found in previous studies, but we find an additional inner structure at |l| < 4deg, where the longitude - apparent magnitude relation is distinct from the outer bar, and the apparent magnitude peak changes by only 0.1 mag over the central 8deg. We report on the discovery of an infrared counterpart to the X-ray transient XTE J1720-318 on 2003 January 18, nine days after an X-ray outburst, and the infrared light curve during the first 130 days after the outburst. The infrared light curve shows a decline of about 1.2 mag from the peak magnitude of Ks about 15.3 over the observation period, and a secondary maximum, about 40 days after the outburst. Another small increase in the flux was also recorded about 20 days after the outburst. These increases were also detected in the X-ray light curve. The J H Ks colors are consistent with an X-ray irradiated accretion disk suffering an extinction of Av about 8, which is also inferred from its X-ray spectrum and the extinction map constructed from far-infrared dust emission of this line of sight. These J, H, and Ks observations demonstrate that useful data can be obtained even for such an object, which suffers heavy optical extinction, possibly located beyond the Galactic center., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in PASJ

We have detected emission of molecular hydrogen from a classical T Tauri star, LkHalpha 264 in the v=1-0 S(1) line at 2.122 micron. The line velocity is coincident with the rest velocity of the star. The line profile is well reproduced by a model in which the line emanates from material in a Keplerian rotating circumstellar disk. Fluorescence by X-ray ionization and shock excitation due to accretion or a low-velocity wind are considered for the emission mechanism of molecular hydrogen., Comment: 10 pages. Accepted to PASJ

We have carried out a millimeter interferometric continuum survey toward 7 YSOs in the MBM 12 cloud. Thermal emissions associated with 2 YSOs were detected above the 3-$\sigma$ level at 2.1 mm, and one also showed a 1.3 mm thermal emission. Another object was marginally detected at 2.1 mm. Spectral energy distributions of the YSOs are well fitted by a simple power-law disk model. Masses of the circumstellar disks are estimated to be an order of $0.05 M_{\sun}$. The circumstellar disks in the MBM 12 cloud have properties in common with the disks in nearby star-forming regions, in terms of disk parameters such as a disk mass, as well as an infrared excess., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters
