We have undertaken an imaging survey of 34 nearby galaxies in far-ultraviolet (FUV, ~1500A) and optical (UBVRI) passbands to characterize galaxy morphology as a function of wavelength. This sample, which includes a range of classical Hubble types from elliptical to irregular with emphasis on spirals at low inclination angle, provides a valuable database for comparison with images of high-z galaxies whose FUV light is redshifted into the optical and near- infrared bands. Ultraviolet data are from the UIT Astro-2 mission. We present images and surface brightness profiles for each galaxy, and we discuss the wavelength-dependence of morphology for different Hubble types in the context of understanding high-z objects. In general, the dominance of young stars in the FUV produces the patchy appearance of a morphological type later than that inferred from optical images. Prominent rings and circumnuclear star formation regions are clearly evident in FUV images of spirals, while bulges, bars, and old, red stellar disks are faint to invisible at these short wavelengths. However, the magnitude of the change in apparent morphology ranges from dramatic in early--type spirals with prominent optical bulges to slight in late-type spirals and irregulars, in which young stars dominate both the UV and optical emission. Starburst galaxies with centrally concentrated, symmetric bursts display an apparent ``E/S0'' structure in the FUV, while starbursts associated with rings or mergers produce a peculiar morphology. We briefly discuss the inadequacy of the optically-defined Hubble sequence to describe FUV galaxy images and estimate morphological k-corrections, and we suggest some directions for future research with this dataset., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJS. 15 pages, 17 JPEG figures, 10 GIF figures. Far-UV (FUV), H-alpha, and HI observations of dwarf galaxy Holmberg II are used to trace the interaction between sites of massive star formation and the neutral and ionized components of the surrounding ISM. The data emphasize the importance of local conditions in regulating star formation from evidence such as massive stars inside ionized shells, compact HII regions surrounding aging clusters, and stars formed in chains of progressing age. Large-scale triggering by HI shells is supported by observations of progenitor populations as well as secondary sites of star formation associated with their dense rims. Analysis of the energy available from massive stars inside HI shells indicates energy deposited into the ISM from supernovae and stellar winds is sufficient to account for the HI morphology. Ages of individual star forming regions are derived using B, H-alpha, and FUV photometry. The distribution of ages is reconciled with the HI morphology, showing a clear preference of young regions for areas of dense HI and old regions for HI voids. Global kinematical properties may also play a role in the star formation process since differences in the rotation characteristics of the neutral gas disk correlate with differences in triggering mechanisms., Comment: 24 Pages, 20 Figures, to appear in ApJ

We discuss far-UV (1500 A) surface photometry and FUV-B color profiles for 8 E/S0 galaxies from images taken with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, primarily during the Astro-2 mission. In three cases, the FUV radial profiles are more consistent with an exponential than a de Vaucouleurs function, but there is no other evidence for the presence of a disk or of young, massive stars. In all cases except M32 the FUV-B color becomes redder at larger radii. There is a wide range of internal radial FUV-B color gradients. However, we find no correlation between the FUV-B color gradients and internal metallicity gradients based on Mg absorption features. We analyze ultraviolet (~1500 A) images of the old open clusters M67, NGC 188, and NGC 6791 obtained with Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the second flight of the Astro observatory in March 1995. Twenty stars are detected on the UIT image of M67, including 11 blue stragglers, seven white dwarf candidates, and the yellow giant -- white dwarf binary S1040. The ultraviolet photometry of the blue stragglers F90 (S975) and F131 (S1082) suggests that these stars have hot subluminous companions. We present a semi-empirical integrated ultraviolet spectrum of M67, and show that the blue stragglers dominate the integrated spectrum at wavelengths shorter than 2600 A. The number of white dwarfs in M67 is roughly consistent with the number expected from white dwarf cooling models. Eight candidate sdB/sdO stars are detected in NGC 6791, and two are detected in NGC 188. The luminosity range 1.10 < log L/Lsun < 1.27, derived from the ultraviolet photometry of the six sdB candidates, is consistent with theoretical models of metal-rich hot horizontal branch (HB) stars. The fraction of hot HB stars in both NGC 6791 and NGC 188 is about 30%, implying that the integrated spectra of both clusters should show a UV turnup at least as strong as that observed in any elliptical galaxy., Comment: 34 pages incl. 6 postscript figures, accepted for publication in AJ

We compare the detailed distributions of HI, H alpha, and 150 nm far-UV continuum emission in the spiral arms of M81 at a resolution of 9" (linear resolution 150 pc at 3.7 Mpc distance). The bright H alpha emission peaks are always associated with peaks in the far-UV emission. The converse is not always true; there are many regions of far-UV emission with little corresponding H alpha. The HI and the far-UV are always closely associated, in the sense that the HI is often brightest around the edges of the far-UV emission. The effects of extinction on the morphology are small, even in the far-UV. Extensive far-UV emission, often with little corresponding H alpha, indicates the presence of many ``B-stars'', which produce mostly non-ionizing UV photons. These far-UV photons dissociate a small fraction of an extensive layer of H_2 into HI. The observed morphology can be understood if ``chimneys'' are common in the spiral arms of M81, where holes are blown out of the galactic disk, exposing the bright HII regions and the corresponding far-UV associated with vigorous star formation. These ``naked'' star-forming regions show little obscuration. H_2 is turned into HI by UV photons impinging on the interior surfaces of these chimneys. The intensity of the far-UV radiation measured by UIT can dissociate the underlying H_2 with a typical density of ~10 H nucleii cm**-3 to produce the observed amount of HI in the spiral arms of M81. Except for thin surface layers locally heated in these photo-dissociation regions close to the far-UV sources, the bulk of the molecular gas in the inner disk of M81 is apparently too cold to produce much 12CO(1-0) emission., Comment: 12 pages, Latex. 8 postscript files. We have obtained spectra of the yellow giant S1040 in the open cluster M67 using the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) and the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. S1040 is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a 42.8d period that occupies a "red straggler" position in the M67 color-magnitude diagram (CMD), 0.2 mag blueward of the giant branch. A detection of S1040 at 1620 A with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope provided evidence that the secondary is a hot white dwarf, and thus that the anomalous location of S1040 in the CMD is likely due to a prior episode of mass-transfer. Our GHRS spectrum shows a broad Ly alpha absorption profile that confirms the white dwarf identification of the S1040 secondary. A model atmosphere fit to the GHRS spectrum yields Teff = 16,160 K, log g = 6.7, and a mass of 0.22 Msun, for an assumed cluster distance of 820 pc and reddening of E(B-V) = 0.02. The unusually low mass derived for the white dwarf implies that it must have a helium core, and that a mass-transfer episode must have begun while the progenitor was on the lower giant branch. We construct a plausible mass-transfer history for S1040 in which it originated as a short (~2d) period binary, and evolved through a blue straggler phase to reach its current state., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, AAS LaTex, to appear in ApJ Letters

We present images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope of the Abell 1795 cluster of galaxies. We compare the cD galaxy morphology and photometry of these data with those from existing archival and published data. The addition of a far--UV color helps us to construct and test star formation model scenarios for the sources of UV emission. Models of star formation with rates in the range $\sim5-20M_{\sun}$yr$^{-1}$ indicate that the best fitting models are those with continuous star formation or a recent ($\sim4$ Myr old) burst superimposed on an old population. The presence of dust in the galaxy, dramatically revealed by HST images complicates the interpretation of UV data. However, we find that the broad--band UV/optical colors of this cD galaxy can be reasonably matched by models using a Galactic form for the extinction law with $E_{B-V}=0.14$. We present an analysis of far-ultraviolet (FUV: 130-180 nm) and optical (U, B, and V) data of the stellar and nebular content of the OB associations LH 9, 10, and 13 in the Large Magellanic Cloud region N 11. The FUV images from The Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope strongly select the hot O and B stars; over 1900 stars were detected in the FUV to a limiting magnitude of m(FUV) = 17 mag. The resulting FUV photometry combined with optical ground-based data indicate there are approximately 88 confirmed or candidate O stars in the LH 9, 10, and 13 fields alone (in an area of ~ 41 arcmin$^2$), and possibly as many as 170 to 240 O-type stars within the entire 40~arcmin-diameter field of view., Comment: AAS LaTeX style, 6 pages, 5 figures (Fig 1 as a GIF file, Figs 2-5 as encapsulated PostScript for embedding in the LaTeX file). We present a 1620 A image of the nearby globular cluster NGC 6752 obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) during the Astro-2 mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1995 March. An ultraviolet-visible color-magnitude diagram (CMD) is derived for 216 stars matched with the visible photometry of Buonanno et al. (1986). This CMD provides a nearly complete census of the hot horizontal branch (HB) population with good temperature and luminosity discrimination for comparison with theoretical tracks. The observed data show good agreement with the theoretical zero-age horizontal branch (ZAHB) of Sweigart (1996) for an assumed reddening of E(B-V) = 0.05 and a distance modulus of 13.05. The observed HB luminosity width is in excellent agreement with the theoretical models and supports the single star scenario for the origin of extreme horizontal branch (EHB) stars. However, only four stars can be identified as post-EHB stars, whereas almost three times this many are expected from the HB number counts. If this effect is not a statistical anomaly, then some non-canonical effect may be decreasing the post-EHB lifetime. The recent non-canonical models of Sweigart (1996), which have helium-enriched envelopes due to mixing along the red giant branch, cannot explain the deficit of post-EHB stars, but might be better able to explain their luminosity distribution., Comment: 14 pages, AASTeX, includes 4 EPS figures ApJ Letters accepted

Far-UV (1520 ang.), U, H-alpha, and R images of the interacting Sbc spiral galaxy M51 were obtained by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) and at Mt. Laguna Observatory. The mu(152)-mu(U) radial gradient of >1 mag, becoming bluer with increasing radius, is attributed primarily to a corresponding radial extinction gradient. Magnitudes in both UV bands and H-alpha fluxes are reported for 28 HII regions. Optical extinctions for the 28 corresponding UV sources are computed from the measured m(152)-U colors by fitting to the optical extinctions of Nakai and Kuno (1995). The normalized far-UV extinction A(152)/E(B-V) increases with radius or decreasing metallicity, from 5.99 to 6.54, compared with the Galactic value 8.33. The best-fit m(152)-U color for no extinction, -3.07, is the color of a model solar metallicity starburst of age ~2.5 Myr with IMF slope -1.0. HII regions show decreasing observed H-alpha fluxes with decreasing radius, relative to the H-alpha fluxes predicted from the observed f(152) for age 2.5 Myr, after correction for extinction. We attribute the increasing fraction of ``missing'' H-alpha flux with decreasing radius to increasing extinction in the Lyman continuum. Increasing extinction-corrected far-UV flux of the HII regions with decreasing radius is probably a result of the corresponding increasing column density of the interstellar gas resulting in larger mass OB associations. Studies of nearby spiral galaxies suggest that photodissociation regions (PDRs) are capable of producing the observed large--scale distribution of HI (Allen et al.- 1997, and references therein). The column density of HI in a PDR is fundamentally linked to the amount of far--ultraviolet (FUV) emission produced by nearby young stars and the local molecular gas volume density. Measurements of the HI column density and the FUV emission associated with PDRs thus provide a new probe of the molecular gas distribution in nearby galaxies. Advantages of this method include its insensitivity to assumptions about the CO/{\rm H2} conversion factor or the gas temperature. We discuss the application of this method to M101. The HI column density and FUV emission have been measured for 35 PDRs from VLA data (Braun 1997) and Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope data (Waller et al.-1997). We derive volume densities ranging from n-100 {\rm cm(exp -3)} in the central HI--poor regions of M101 to n -3000 {\rm cm(exp -3)} in the HI--rich periphery of the galaxy.

We present Infrared Space Observatory Camera (ISOCAM) Circular Variable Filter scans of three giant HII regions in M33. IC 133, NGC 595, and CC 93 span a wide range of metallicity, luminosity, nebular excitation, and infrared excess; three other emission regions (CC 43, CC 99, and a region to the northeast of the core of NGC 595) are luminous enough in the mid-infrared to be detected in the observed fields. ISOCAM CVF observations provide spatially resolved observations (5'') of 151 wavelengths between 5.1 and 16.5 microns with a spectral resolution R = 35 to 50. We observe atomic emission lines ([Ne II], [Ne III], and [S IV]), several "unidentified infrared bands" (UIBs; 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, 12.0, and 12.7 microns), and in some cases a continuum which rises steeply at longer wavelengths. We conclude that the spectra of these three GHRs are well explained by combinations of ionized gas, PAHs, and very small grains in various proportions and with different spatial distributions. Comparisons between observed ratios of the various UIBs with model ratios indicate that the PAHs in all three of the GHRs are dehydrogenated and that the small PAHs have been destroyed in IC 133 but have survived in NGC 595 and CC 93. The [Ne III]/[Ne II] ratios observed in IC 133 and NGC 595 are consistent with their ages of 5 and 4.5 Myr, respectively; the deduced ionization parameter is higher in IC 133, consistent with its more compact region of emission.

During the Astro-1 and Astro-2 Space Shuttle missions in 1990 and 1995, far ultraviolet (FUV) images of five 40 ft diameter fields around the rim of the Cygnus Loop Super Nova Remnants (SNR) were observed with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). These fields sample a broad range of SNR conditions including both radiative and non-radiative shocks in various geometries and scales. The UIT B5 band images discussed here sample predominantly ion-C4 lambda 1550 and the 2-photon continuum. Smaller contributions are made by emission lines of ion He-2 lambda 1640 and ion 03 lambda 1666. A unique aspect of the B5 band is its ability to sample the hydrogen 2-photon continuum from regions where the gas is recombining. We present these new FUV images and compare them with optical H-alpha and [ion O13], and ROSAT HRI X-ray images. In non-radiative shocks, existing 2-photon flux measurements from spectra and the H-alpha images suggest we are seeing approximately equal contributions from 2-photon and ion C4 emission. In radiative filaments, however, shock models and our images suggest ion C4 should dominate while spectra of specific locations seem to indicate that 2-photon emission dominates. We surmise that spectral observations on specific bright filaments have decreased locally-observed levels of ion C41 emission due to resonance scattering in that line.

Images of the central and southern parts of the local group Sb spiral galaxy M31 were obtained by the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope during the Astro-1 Spacelab mission. Stellar photometry is obtained for 611 stars in 59 van den Bergh associations in the near-UV A1 band (central wavelngth 2490 A), and for 130 of these stars in the far UV B1 band (central wavlength 1520 A). In addition, B-band magnitudes for 456 of the stars in approximately 30 associations, together with U- and R-band photometry for approximately 290 stars in approximately 15 associations are determined from CCD images. B-magnitudes from the catalog of Magnier et al. (1992) are given for 137 stars and R-magnitudes for 233 stars. Stellar positions are obtained from the ground based CCD images and from UIT images. Total fluxes in the UV bands are measured for 63 associations . Finding charts are presented in the NUV and FUV bands, as well as, one optical band. Tables give the images utilized in this investigation, the associations observed, with positions, total UV fluxes, extinctions estimated from color-magnitude diagrams, and stellar positions with photometry in up to five bands. UV color magnitude diagrams are presented with extinctions estimated by comparing the observed association color magnitude diagrams with colors and magnitudes of early-type stars computed from the IUE spectral atlas of Fanelli et al. (1992). Comparison with evolutionary models suggests a maximum initial mass approx. 85 solar mass. Ultraviolet extinctions within most M31 OB associations is found to follow an extinction curve similar to that of Hutchings et al. (1992). The variation in the fraction of near-UV stars also measured in the far-UV among the associations is probably caused by variations in age, extinction, and the degree of foreground contamination.

Spectrophotometric data available from ground-based and IUE observations of the reflection nebula CED 201 and its illuminating star BD + 69.1231 deg are analyzed to deduce the most likely star-nebula geometry and the wavelength dependence of the scattering characteristics of the nebular grains. The dust albedo is found to decline from 0.72 at V to probably less than 0.2 at lambda less than 2000 A, explaining the unusual red color of this reflection nebula. The wavelength dependence of the optical depth and of the phase function asymmetry in the visible suggests the existence of a narrow size distribution of grains, skewed toward larger than normal particle sizes. CED 201 is one of two reflection nebulae with positive evidence for enhanced scattering in the long-wavelength wing of the 2175 A dust extinction feature, also pointing toward larger than average grains.

Twelve planetary nebulae of the 15 surveyed by IUE in the Megellanic Clouds were analyzed. Chemical abundances and other nebular parameters were determined, along with masses for the central stars. The latter are clustered in the range 0.58 to 0.71 solar masses, contrary to preliminary finding for 3 of the stars. This difference is attributed to the adoption of stellar atmosphere models that better represent the emergent flux distributions below the Lyman limit.

Spectrophotometric observations of two reflection nebulae and their illuminating stars obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite have provided the first evidence for the presence of a scattering contribution to the 2175 A interstellar extinction band. Lower than normal far-UV extinction for the stars embedded in the nebulae indicates that the nebulae have a dust particle size distribution that is dominated by larger particles. The strength of the 2175 A band is larger than normal in both cases. The scattering is found to dominate the long-wavelength wing of the band, without shifting the central wavelength of the band by more than 20 A toward longer wavelengths. These observations are taken to indicate that the solid particles responsible for the 2175 A band can be considerably larger than the Rayleigh limit in some interstellar locations. The absence of a notable shift in the central wavelength of the band in such large particles presents a new severe constraint for models of interstellar grains.

New surface brightness measurements in the reflection nebulae associated with the Pleiades stars 17, 20, and 23 Tau have been carried out with the IUE satellite. Each nebula was observed at two angular offsets south of the respective illuminating star. At the larger offsets (40, 40, and 60 arcsec respectively) each nebula exhibits a flux distribution which rises much more steeply with decreasing wavelengths than the corresponding stellar spectrum. At the smaller offsets (20 arcsec) the nebular spectra are more similar to those of the stars and fail to show the steep rise at wavelengths less than 2200 A. Independent observations of interstellar absorption lines as well as theoretical arguments by several previous authors lead to a model wherein the reflection nebulosity near the Pleiades stars is caused by a thin sheet of interstellar matter in front of the stars, at an approximate distance of a few x 10 to the -2nd pc. In the context of such a model the nebular spectra obtained near 17, 20, and 23 Tau can be understood only if the phase-function asymmetry of scattering declines with decreasing wavelengths throughout the spectral range. This result indicates that the role of scattering in the UV by particles in the 10 to the -6th cm size range appears more important than is generally recognized by current models.

Imagery of the bulge of M31 obtained with a rocket-borne telescope in two broad bands centered at 1460 A and 2380 A is discussed. The UV spatial profiles over a region about 200 arcsec wide are identical with those at visible wavelengths. The absence of detectable point sources indicates that main-sequence stars hotter than B0 V are not present in the bulge. It is suggested that the far-UV flux in old stellar populations originates in post-AGB stars. The UV flux from such stars is extremely sensitive to age and the physics of their previous mass loss.

A natural laboratory for the study of postmain-sequence evolution of low-mass (less than one solar mass) metal-poor stars is provided by globular clusters. These clusters are, therefore, a critical aid for developing an understanding of advanced stages of stellar evolution and of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Bohlin et al. (1983) have described a study of the postasymptotic branch star near the center of M5. The present investigation is concerned with the fainter horizontal-branch stars. The observations were made with the aid of a rocket-borne 38 cm f/9.0 Ritchey-Chretien telescope. Attention is given to payload and flight data, preflight bandpass calibration, the reduction of flight data, star selection, position measurement, photometry, the minimum observed horizontal-branch mass and inferences on mass loss, and individual UV-bright stars.

Digitizing flatfield images produces conditions in the Photometric Data System PDS which cause the measured density to drift by as much as .1 DN during a 10 minute interval. The drift occurs when the PDS, set up in equilibrium at fog level, subsequently scans a reasonably dense region for periods of longer than a few minutes. The drift is manifested primarily as a positive shift in density that is approximately the same for all densities. If the fog level is assumed to be in fact constant and is monitored during scans of flat fields, the PDS drift may be removed by subtracting the difference between the observed fog level and its assumed constant value for each pixel. This function is then smoothed and subtracted, as a function of scan line, from the measured density. The fog level is then adjusted to a standard value by adding a constant. The result is a flattened scan with PDS drift removed to the accuracy within which the fog level drift matches the drift at other levels.

The planetary nebula in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy is carbon rich, according to calculations based on measurements of the 1909 A emission line doublet of semiforbidden C III obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. The ratio N(C)/N(O) is approximately equal to 3.7, comparable to the largest reliably determined carbon/oxygen ratios in high excitation planetaries of the Milky Way. The present result is based on four low-dispersion spectra with a combined exposure time of 27.2 hours; the Fornax planetary nebula is probably the most distant known planetary that can be observed with IUE. The IUE data were analyzed together with visible-wavelength emission-line fluxes reported by Danziger et al. (1978) to compute abundances for various elements. In terms of chemical composition, the Fornax nebula resembles planetary nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds more closely than it does typical or carbon-rich planetaries in the Galaxy.

It has been found that the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction is not the same for all stars in the Galaxy. The present investigation is concerned with a further demonstration of the degree of variation of interstellar extinction in the UV, taking into account new extinction measurements toward 29 early-type stars. The stars do not represent a random sample. Approximately 15 of them were chosen because they have either an unusually large or an unusually small ratio of the strength of the diffuse interstellar band at 4430 A to the color excess E(B-V). Five stars have a ratio of these quantities near average and nine additional stars are illuminating reflection nebulae. Attention is given to the deviation from the average galactic extinction law, dense versus diffuse cloud environments, and the galactic longitude dependence.

It is pointed out that ultraviolet imagery of spiral galaxies is a sensitive probe of the large-scale morphology of the star-forming regions and the associated interstellar dust. A rocket-borne Ritchey-Chretien telescope was employed to obtain three ultraviolet images of the Sc 1 galaxy M101 (NGC 5457). The present investigation is concerned with the procedures for reduction and absolute calibration of the obtained images and an analysis in terms of discrete sources. Attention is also given to the radial variation and the azimuthal variation of disk and arms. It is found that the emission from M101 in the UV bandpass is dominated by extreme Population I, in the form of discrete OB/H II complexes.

Ultraviolet images of the SAB(s)c I-II galaxy M83 (NGC 5236) obtained with a rocketborne telescope in broad bandpasses centered at 1540 A and 2360 A show a bright resolved nuclear source which accounts for approximately 20 percent of the flux of the galaxy in both bandpasses. Low-resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra of this source reveal an energy distribution similar to that of the starburst nucleus of NGC 7714. Strong blueshifted absorption lines can be interpreted as evidence for a nuclear wind powered by supernovae. Observations from UV, X-ray, optical, and far-infrared bandpasses are consistent with a starburst approximately one-sixth as strong as that in M82. A scaling of the M82 models of Rieke et al. (1980) predicts that the nucleus of M83 contains 10 to the 6th - 3 x 10 to the 7th solar masses in young stars and has a supernova rate of approximately 0.01 per yr.

Observations of a UV bright source in the globular cluster M5 using instrumentation on the Black Brant rocket are reported. Imagery was obtained by two cameras operating at 1540 A and 2360 A and bandpasses of 350 A and 880 A. The instruments are prototypes for cameras to be flown with the Spacelab. The UV-emitting object in the cluster was located off-center. Comparison of the data with data from the IUE for short-wavelength radiation indicated a temperature in the range 25,000-50,000 K, with a dereddened flux for the continuum near 1550 A of 4.2 x 10 to the -13th ergs/sq cm per sec per A. The object is concluded to be a post-AGB star with an envelope which has experienced CNO processing.

IUE measurements have been obtained for the UV extinction characteristics of 20 reddened stars previously reported to have anomalously high or low A(4430)/E(B-V) ratios, in order to conduct a first statistical study of the correlations between these ratios and interstellar extinction features in the UV. A marginally significant positive correlation is noted between A(4430)/E(B-V) and the normalized strength of the 2175 A extinction jump, but no correlation is found with the total extinction at the wavelength and a marginally negative correlation is found with the extinction rise at 1250 A. The hypothesis that 4430 A diffuse absorption is produced by very small interstellar grains is not supported by the present observations.

Physical parameters of the central stars of the planetary nebulae (PN) P40, N2, and N5 are determined from UV observations by the IUE spacecraft and emission line-data. The observations took place on May 23 and 26, 1981. Derived properties, such as the H-beta, color excess, nebular hydrogen emission, helium emission, and stellar continuum emission, the stellar radius, surface gravity, Zanstra temperature, luminosity, absolute bolometric magnitude, apparent visual magnitude, mass, and Zanstra parameter for the three PN central stars are presented. All the masses were over one solar mass, suggesting a specific PN nuclei mass. The finding was corroborated by all luminosities exceeding the Eddington luminosity for a 0.6 solar mass star, which has previously been calculated for the white dwarf core of a PN.

IUE observations of the reflection nebula NGC 7023 and the illuminating star, HD 200775, in the spectral range from 1300 to 3100 A are combined with ground-based measurements of the nebular brightness distribution at 3500, 4100, 4700, and 5500 A to determine the scattering properties of the nebular dust grains. Total nebular fluxes are derived from existing data obtained by satellite and ground-based observations. The relevance of far-IR fluxes from the nebula is considered, and models are derived that are applicable to NGC 7023 both with respect to the ratio of nebular to stellar fluxes and with respect to the nebular surface brightness distribution. It is shown that the average grain albedo in the UV is about 0.54 and that the albedo increases to a level of about 0.6 at 1400 A after reaching a minimum of approximately 0.4 near 2200 A. The results suggest that isotropically scattering particles of high albedo make a significant contribution to interstellar scattering in the far-UV.

Since extreme Population I dominates three rocketborne telescope UV images of the Sc I galaxy NGC 5457, the delineation of the spiral structure is sharper than that of ground photographs. The UV pictures, in which the H II regions appear as reflection nebulae and illumine the nearby dust, reveal faint arms which, although correlated with the 21 cm H I radiograph, are only marginally detectable on deep visual photographs. The surface brightness of the arms is explainable in terms of UV light scattering off dust from hot stars and bright H II regions, in which case the dust would have extinction properties and a dust-to-gas ratio similar to that in the solar neighborhood and would in addition suggest that the NGC 5457 outer arm metal content is similar to that of the galaxy.

High-resolution photographs of the Orion Nebula have been obtained in UV bands centered near 1400, 1820, 2240 and 2620 by a 31-cm telescope mounted on an Astrobee sounding rocket. Reduction of the data by image processing, photometric calibration and error analysis steps was used to derive a matrix of values of specific intensity in absolute units. Data indicate that the Orion Nebula is primarily a reflection nebula in the UV, so that morphology is determined by the distribution of dust with respect to the illuminating stars. Ultraviolet color gradients for each color relative to the 1820-A image indicate reddening towards the outer parts of the nebula, as well as fairly symmetric dust scattering in the Theta 1 and Theta 2 Ori region. The color gradients also imply a monotonic change in scattering phase function asymmetry between 2620 and 1400 A. Total nebular flux in each bandpass is observed to be about 2.5 times the stellar flux from the Trapezium, indicating a high scattering efficiency.

Ultraviolet spectroscopy of the Crab Nebula done by the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite is described, and an estimate of the carbon abundance is made, noting data reduction to remove spectral defects caused by radiation hits. The important C IV 1549, He II 1640, and semiforbidden C III 1908 emission line intensities were measured and upper limits placed on other ultraviolet features for the brightest filamentary region in the Nebula. The emission lines imply an average ionic abundance ratio n(C+2)/n(O+2) in the range from 0.4 to 1.5 in the observed gaseous condensations. The elemental abundance ratio of carbon to oxygen is probably in the same range. Analysis shows that there is no perceptible excess of carbon due to presupernova nucleosynthesis in the observed region. The large helium abundance, small carbon and oxygen abundances, and presence of a neutron star in the Crab Nebula suggest that the presupernova star had a mass close to eight solar masses.

Ultraviolet spectra of the high excitation planetary nebulas LMC P40, SMC N2, and SMC N5 are presented in an investigation of their chemical composition in an effort to make reliable estimates of the carbon abundance in extragalactic planetary nebulas. The carbon abundance is found to be almost 40 times more abundant in the SMC planetaries than in the SMC interstellar medium, and is about 6 times more abundant in the LMC planetary than in the LMC interstellar medium. The net result of carbon synthesis and convective dredgeup in the progenitors of planetary nebulas as reflected in the nebular carbon abundance is roughly the same in the Galaxy, the LMC, and the SMC.

The planetary nebulae LMC P40, SMC N2, and SMC N5 and their central stars were observed with IUE. The C abundances in the nebulae, compared with those in galactic planetaries, indicate that convective dredgeup of locally nucleosynthesized C has occurred. The progenitors of the nebulae were C stars at the theoretical upper luminosity threshold, thus such stars do occur as predicted, although none so bright have been found in the Clouds. The central stars of the nebulae have masses approximately 1 solar mass, luminosities approximately 40,000 solar luminosity, and radii approximately 0.7 solar radius; they have probably not yet reached their maximum luminosities. With M(subv) 19.1-19.8, they may be the visually faintest stars yet observed by UV spectroscopy. Clearly, it is not true that planetary nebulae nuclei all have masses M = (0.6 + or - 0.1) solar mass.

Low-resolution IUE spectra in the SWP and LWR ranges were obtained of several reflection nebulae in the vicinity of their respective illuminating stars. Data for NGC 7023 (HD200775), NGC 1435 (Merope, 23 Tau), NGC 1432 (Maia, 20 Tau) and the Electra (17 Tau) nebula were found to display significant differences in the shape of their normalized nebular spectra. If the dust in these nebulae is similar from one object to the next, these differences can be most readily explained by differences in the line-of-sight dust distribution, coupled with a wavelength-dependent phase function, changing from a strongly forward throwing form (g = 0.6-0.7) in the visible to a more nearly isotropic shape (g approximately 0.25) at 1400A.
