We demonstrate that agent-based simulations can exhibit results in line with classic macroeconomic theory. In particular, we present an agent-based simulation of an Arrow-Debreu economy that accurately exhibits the Stolper-Samuelson effect as an emergent property. Absent of a Walrasian auctioneer or any other central coordination, we let firm and consumer agents of different types interact in an open, money-driven market. Exogenous preference shocks result in price and wage shifts that are in accordance with the general equilibrium solution, not only qualitatively but also quantitatively with high accuracy. Key to this achievement are three independent measures. First, we overcome the poor input synchronization of conventional price finding heuristics of firms in agent-based models by introducing sensor prices, a novel approach to price finding that decouples information exploitation from information exploration. Second, we improve accuracy and convergence by employing exponential search as exploration algorithm. This paper draws on existing empirical literature and an original theoretical model to argue that technical change does not have to be skill-biased in developing countries. Instead, the extent to which technology adoption in developing countries favors skilled workers depends on a number of factors. Free trade induces technology that favors skilled workers in skill-abundant developing countries and that favors unskilled workers in skill-scarce developing countries, and therefore amplifies the predicted wage effects of trade liberalization. Developing countries experience technical change that is skill-biased when imported skill-biased technologies become relatively cheaper. Increased skill supply further biases technical change in favor of skilled labor. These features aid our understanding of the observed rises in inequality within developing countries, the absence of a significant downward effect of expanded educational attainment on skill premia, and the differential effects of trade liberalization on inequality. Using longitudinal survey data from Korean workers, we examine whether the effects of import competition on post-displacement wages are heterogeneous between skilled and unskilled workers for trading partners with different endowments of (un)skilled labor. Reemployment wages of displaced workers show a decrease for skilled workers but an increase for unskilled ones when imports from an advanced country rise, whereas they decrease for unskilled workers but increase for skilled ones when imports from a developing country rise. The purpose of this article is an attempt to systematise and evaluate the achievements of the American Nobel laureate in economic sciences and co-founder of 'neoclassical synthesis' -- P.A. Samuelson. Motivation: This economist greatly developed the methodology and theory of economics. Preferring the mathematical method in scientific inquiry and introducing new graphic solutions, he contributed to the mathematisation of economics. He enriched the theory of consumption by revealed preferences, devised the 45° line to determine the Keynesian short-term equilibrium in the goods market, as well as the consumer demand, investment demand, and savings function curves, and he also defined collective goods. He completed the theory of division with the modified Lorenz curve, presented the problem of the allocation of scarce resources by the curve of production possibilities, and generalised -- together with R.M. Solow -- the Phillips curve. In addition, he created a model of the interdependence of the multiplier and accelerator, and developed the theory of foreign trade by the 'Stolper-Samuelson effect' and the statement of the impact of prices of production factors on the allocation of resources. Results: Caring for affordability of the exposition of basic economic knowledge contained in his textbook Economics, he made a revolution in the teaching of economics. Trade between China and South Korea has increased since the early 1990s, with South Korea becoming more and more economically dependent on China. At the same time, many regard China as a security threat to South Korea. This study investigates whether South Koreans view China positively or as a future threat within the context of this relationship. This article applies the Stolper-Samuelson theorem to test the proposition that individual South Koreans who benefit from trade with China view China positively, while those who do not benefit view it negatively. Using ordered logit models to analyze two survey data sources-the 2006 Public Opinion Survey by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Asia Society, and East Asia Institute, and the 2010 Asian Barometer Survey-the study concludes that South Koreans with high incomes, who are likely to be beneficiaries, are more likely to view China positively than those with low incomes. We develop and test a theory, based on the Stolper-Samuelson Theorem, of the effectiveness of sanctions. We treat sanctions as exogenously imposed changes in a country's exposure to international markets. In a country with an open-trade regime, owners and intensive users of the abundant factor of production hold economic and political power. In a country closed to trade, however, economic and political power rests with owners and intensive users of scarce factors. Thus, if real rates of return to the abundant factor decline during sanctions against a trade-open country, or real rates of return to the scarce factor decline during sanctions against a trade-closed country, we expect these economically and politically powerful segments of the targeted country to push hard for policy changes that would bring about an end to sanctions. Exploiting the information contained in an economy’s input-output matrix and using the novel approach developed by Fisher and Marshall (2011), we calculate Rybczynski effects and Stolper–Samuelson effects for Germany in 2007. We show how sectoral output and factor remuneration react to exogenous changes of factor endowments and product prices, respectively. These calculations are implemented using two different models comprising one with labour and capital as the classical production factors and one where we introduce patent stock as an additional factor of production. In the former, we further differentiate between a scenario where all production factors are mobile and one with sector-specific capital. In the latter analysis, we measure the impact of innovation-targeting policy action for sectoral output. Positive Rybczynski effects of patents and high-skilled workers are strongest in knowledge-intensive sectors, while other sectors contract. Developing countries have increasingly opened their economies to trade. Research about trade policy in developed countries focuses on a bottom-up process by identifying economic preferences of domestic groups. We know less about developing countries. We analyze how economic and political variables influenced Costa Rican voters in a referendum on CAFTA-DR, an international trade agreement. We find little support for Stolper- Samuelson models of economic preferences, but more support for specific factor models. We also isolate the effects of political parties on the referendum, controlling for many economic factors; we document how at least one party influenced voters and this made the difference for CAFTA-DR passage. Politics, namely parties using their organizational strength to cue and frame messages for voters, influenced this important trade policy decision. This paper is the first application of the singular value decomposition (SVD) in general equilibrium theory. Every technology matrix can be decomposed into three parts: a definition of composite commodities; a definition of composite factors; and a simple map of composite factor prices into composite goods prices. This technique gives an orthogonal decomposition of the price space into two complementary subspaces: vectors that generate the price cone; and a basis that describe the flats on the production possibility frontier. Aid for trade is a new foreign aid initiative to assist recipient countries to build trade-related infrastructure. We formulate a small-country, two-good (i.e., investment and consumption goods), two-factor (i.e., capital and labor) endogenous growth model with learning by doing and intersectoral knowledge spillovers, where the import transport cost depends inversely on public infrastructure. Focusing on the case where the country is incompletely specialized and imports the investment good, we show that a permanent increase in the recipient’s aid/GDP ratio raises the steady-state growth rate if and only if the investment good is more labor-intensive. Using the 2007 wave of the Pew Global Attitudes Project, this paper finds statistically significant and economically large Stolper-Samuelson effects in individuals' preference formation towards trade policy. High-skilled individuals are substantially more pro-trade than low-skilled individuals in high-skilled labor abundant countries, and vice versa in a considerable share of low-skilled labor abundant countries. Our novel international survey data combine a number of desirable features which allow us to paint a more distinct and thus more convincing picture of the role of the Heckscher-Ohlin model in shaping free trade attitudes, relative to existing literature. While it is often argued that imports from China are depressing manufacturing wages in recipient countries, this has never been tested using cross-country data. This article investigates the effect of increased import penetration from China on the wages of workers (total, skilled and unskilled) in the manufacturing sector of 100 economies from 1976 to 2008. The econometric analysis finds no evidence suggesting that import penetration of manufactured goods from China has a statistically significant effect on real manufacturing wages (skilled, unskilled and total) in either developed or developing economies. This may be because Chinese exports are too heterogeneous to strongly affect any particular industry in recipient economies or because foreign consumers are differentiating products made in China from those made locally based on country and brand loyalty and preconceived notions of quality. This article investigates economic factors and non-economic factors of individual attitudes toward free-trade agreements with different countries. Based on the Stolper-Samuelson theorem, highly skilled workers in Taiwan should be more supportive of free trade with China and less supportive of free trade with the United States than should unskilled workers in Taiwan. Using survey data from Taiwan, we find that highly educated people in Taiwan are more supportive of free trade with both the United States and China, and the effects of education are much stronger with respect to free trade with China. This paper presents a new approach to the two-sector optimal taxation problem. We derive the optimal labor income tax rate which depends on factor intensity across sectors. It is the labor intensity that determines the initial wage rate, and therefore the optimal labor tax rate. We show that an increase in the initial relative price of consumption goods decreases the optimal tax rate on labor income in the case that the consumption goods sector is capital-intensive while it increases the optimal tax rate on labor income in the case that the investment goods sector is capital-intensive. Factor prices adjust to product prices in the Stolper- Samuelson theorem of the factor proportions model. The present paper estimates adjustment in the average US wage to changes in prices of manufactures and services with yearly data from 1949 to 2006. Difference equation analysis is based directly on the comparative static factor proportions model. Factors of production are fixed capital assets and the labor force. Summary: This paper explores how the expansion of labor-intensive manufacturing exports resulting from the 2001 US–Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement affected changes in wages in Vietnam through the channel of labor demand. Using the data on panel individuals from the Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveys of 2002 and 2004, and addressing the issue of endogeneity, the results confirm the existence of a Stolper–Samuelson type effect, i.e., those provinces more exposed to the increase in exports experienced a relatively larger wage growth for unskilled workers and a decline of (or a smaller increase in) the relative wage of skilled and unskilled workers. ABSTRACT This paper investigates the distributional impact of international trade when goods markets are oligopolistic and firms partially pass-through changes in tariffs into prices and factor costs for differentiated products. Trade liberalization raises mark-ups and profit shares in the export industry and lowers them in the import-competing industry, while Stolper-Samuelson effects on real prices of primary factors are attenuated or possibly reversed. An extended model shows how 'offshoring' (trade in intermediate goods) can potentially increase mark-ups for oligopolistic producers of final goods. By constructing a two-country, three-commodity, three-sector theoretical model, we show that trade liberalisation has double effects, i.e., 'factor price effect' and 'technology progress effect', on labour income share. China's deviation from the Stolper-Samuelson Theorem is mainly due to the negative effect of technology progress, which weakens the positive pulling effect of trade liberalisation on labour income share. Based on the panel data of 29 provinces and cities in China dated from 1987 to 2006, we build up an empirical model. We find that because of the offsetting cancellation of opposite effects, the overall effect of trade liberalisation on labour income share is insignificant. However, when eliminating the negative effect of technology progress on labour income share, the effect of trade liberalisation becomes significantly positive. Moreover, the positive effect of trade liberalisation has become smaller in recent years. We formulate a two-country, two-good, two-factor endogenous growth model with learning by doing and intersectoral knowledge spillovers. Our model exhibits no transitional dynamics because of constant returns to capital, the existence of only one state variable for each country, and the factor price equalization theorem. By applying our model to the problem of aid and growth, we show that a permanent increase in untied aid raises the common growth rate if and only if the propensity to consume the capital-intensive good in the recipient country is larger than in the donor country. The Stolper-Samuelson theorem predicts that the relative wage of high-skilled to low-skilled labor will increase in the high-skill abundant US but decrease in low-skill abundant Mexico after trade liberalization, while it actually began to rise in both countries in the late 1980s. We present a simple resolution of this 'trade-wage inequality anomaly' in a model of variety trade. Variety trade increases the variety of intermediate goods used by the final good. If the varieties and high-skilled labor are complements, the skill premium rises in both countries. This linking of imports of new foreign varieties-the extensive margin-to wage inequality is compatible with evidence. This paper uses a detailed employer-employee dataset to test the effects of low-income-country import competition on the earnings of workers in manufacturing industries in Canada. From 1996 to 2001 earnings inequality increased: the wage gap between manufacturing workers with a university degree and those without a high school diploma rose from 35% to 43%. Greater import competition is found to explain part of the growing wage gap, consistent with Stolper-Samuelson effects. Point estimates suggest that these effects increased slightly over the period of study and are strongest in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia, provinces with the highest low-income-country import-penetration rates. However, the results also suggest (i) the relative wage effects of increased import competition are not as 'clear cut' as predicted by the Stolper-Samuelson theorem and (ii) that other individual and plant-level factors are important determinants of the structure of earnings inequality in Canada. This paper examines the various aspects of trade liberalization with heterogeneous firms using the ) model. We find a number of novel results and effects including a Stolper-Samuelson-like result and several results related to the volume of trade, which are empirically testable. We also analyze what might be called an anti-variety effect as the result of trade liberalization. We show that this effect is most pronounced for small countries. This resonates with the often voiced criticism from antiglobalists that globalization leads the world to become more homogeneous by eliminating local specialties.
