Stellar photospheric inhomogeneities are a significant source of noise, which currently precludes the discovery of Earth-mass planets orbiting Sun-like stars with the radial-velocity (RV) method. To complement several previous studies that have used ground- and spaced-based facilities to characterize the RV of the Sun, here we characterize the center-to-limb variability (CLV) of solar RVs arising from various solar-surface inhomogeneities observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic Magnetic Imager and SDO/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly. By using various SDO observables to classify pixels and calculate line-of-sight velocities as a function of pixel classification and limb angle, we show that each identified feature type, including the umbrae and penumbrae of sunspots, quiet-Sun magnetoconvective cells, magnetic network, and plage, exhibit distinct and complex CLV signatures, including a notable limb-angle dependence in the observed suppression of convective blueshift for magnetically active regions. We discuss the observed distributions of velocities by identified region type and limb angle, offer interpretations of the physical phenomena that shape these distributions, and emphasize the need to understand the RV signatures of these regions as astrophysical signals, rather than simple (un)correlated noise processes. This is the first comprehensive study of the eclipsing binaries V527 Dra and V2846 Cyg, based on radial velocities and ground- and space-based light curves. We perform detailed modeling of these data to derive the absolute parameters and the orbital properties of the two systems. V527 Dra is found to be a semidetached, and V2846 Cyg a contact binary. Both show continual out-of-eclipse variations that can be explained by migrating dark spots of magnetic origin. We also perform the eclipse timing variation (ETV) analysis which reveals that V527 Dra has a tertiary companion whose mass (⁠|${\sim} 1 \,{\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠) and orbital inclination (⁠|${\sim} 70^{\circ }$|⁠) are additionally constrained by radial velocities. The ETV diagram of V2846 Cyg displays a quadratic trend accompanied by a low-amplitude cyclic variation, likely due to a magnetic cycle, although further eclipse times are needed to provide a clearer explanation. Lastly, we demonstrate a correlation between the variations in spot parameters obtained via light curve modelling for individual orbital cycles and the residual ETVs, essentially confirming the assumption of magnetic activity in both systems. The intensities of the hydrogen Balmer lines of solar-like stars are investigated for stellar chromospheric activity by using the co-source spectral data of the LAMOST Low-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey (LRS) and Medium-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey (MRS). The Balmer H α , H β , H γ , and H δ lines in the LRS data and the H α line in the MRS data are analyzed. The absolute flux indexes, defined as the ratios of the absolute fluxes at the centers of the Balmer lines to the stellar bolometric flux, are employed to indicate the intensity magnitudes of the Balmer lines in response to stellar activity. The H α indexes derived from the LRS data and the MRS data, respectively, are calibrated to be quantitatively consistent with each other. It is found that, as the H α index increases, the H β , H γ , and H δ indexes first present trend of increasing and then decreasing, and finally increase synchronously with the H α index. The distributions of the Balmer line indexes also reveal the three distinct stages of stellar activity (normal stage, intense stage, and extremely intense stage), in which the extremely intense stage is characterized by the synchronous growth of the indexes of the four Balmer lines. The different behaviors of the H β , H γ , and H δ lines from that of the H α line can be interpreted by the different mechanisms by which the line-core intensities are formed, and the three distinct activity stages imply the very different magnetic field environments and physical conditions of solar-like stars. This work focuses on the analysis of the mean longitudinal magnetic field as a stellar activity tracer in the context of small exoplanet detection and characterization in radial-velocity (RV) surveys. We use Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager filtergrams to derive Sun-as-a-star magnetic field measurements, and show that the mean longitudinal magnetic field is an excellent rotational period detector and a useful tracer of the solar magnetic cycle. To put these results into context, we compare the mean longitudinal magnetic field to three common activity proxies derived from HARPS-N Sun-as-a-star data: the full width at half-maximum, the bisector span, and the S-index. The mean longitudinal magnetic field does not correlate with the RVs and therefore cannot be used as a one-to-one proxy. However, with high cadence and a long baseline, the mean longitudinal magnetic field outperforms all other considered proxies as a solar rotational period detector, and can be used to inform our understanding of the physical processes happening on the surface of the Sun. We also test the mean longitudinal magnetic field as a 'stellar proxy' on a reduced solar data set to simulate stellar-like observational sampling. With a Gaussian Process regression analysis, we confirm that the solar mean longitudinal magnetic field is the most effective of the considered indicators, and is the most efficient rotational period indicator over different levels of stellar activity. One of the most basic quantities relevant to planning observations and assessing detection bias is the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Remarkably, the SNR of an idealized radial velocity (RV) signal has not been previously derived beyond scaling behaviours and ignoring orbital eccentricity. In this work, we derive the RV SNR for three relevant cases to observers. First, we consider a single mass orbiting a star, revealing the expected result that |$\mathrm{SNR}\propto K \sqrt{T}$|⁠ , where T is the observing window, but an additional dependence on eccentricity and argument of periastron. We show that the RV method is biased towards companions with their semimajor axes aligned to the observer, which is physically intuitive, but also less obviously that the marginalized bias to eccentricity is negligible until one reaches very high eccentricities. Secondly, we derive the SNR necessary to discriminate eccentric companions from 2:1 resonance circular orbits, although our result is only valid for eccentricities |$e\lesssim 0.3$|⁠. We find that the discriminatory SNR is |$\tfrac{9}{8} e^2 (1-e^2)^{-1/2}$| times that of the eccentric planet solution's SNR, and is thus typically an order of magnitude less. Finally, we have obtained a semi-empirical expression for the SNR of the idealized Rossiter–McLaughlin (RM) effect, revealing the bias with respect to spin–orbit alignment angle. Our formula is valid to within 10 per cent accuracy in 95.45 per cent of the training samples used (for |$b\le 0.8$|⁠), but larger deviations occur when comparing to different RM models. Context. Many novel methods have been proposed to mitigate stellar activity for exoplanet detection as the presence of stellar activity in radial velocity (RV) measurements is the current major limitation. Unlike traditional methods that model stellar activity in the RV domain, more methods are moving in the direction of disentangling stellar activity at the spectral level. As deep neural networks have already been proven to be one of the most effective tools in data mining, in this work, we explore their potential in the context of Earth-like planet detection in RV measurements. Aims. The goal of this paper is to present a novel convolutional neural network-based algorithm that efficiently models stellar activity signals at the spectral level, enhancing the detection of Earth-like planets. Methods. Based on the idea that the presence of planets can only produce a Doppler shift at the spectral level while the presence of stellar activity can introduce a variation in the profile of spectral lines (asymmetry and depth change), we trained a convolutional neural network to build the correlation between the change in the spectral line profile and the corresponding RV, full width at half maximum (FWHM) and bisector span (BIS) values derived from the classical cross-correlation function. Results. This algorithm has been tested on three intensively observed stars: Alpha Centauri B (HD 128621), Tau ceti (HD 10700), and the Sun. By injecting simulated planetary signals at the spectral level, we demonstrate that our machine learning algorithm can achieve, for HD 128621 and HD 10700, a detection threshold of 0.5 m s−1 in semi-amplitude for planets with periods ranging from 10 to 300 days. This threshold would correspond to the detection of a ~4 M⊕ in the habitable zone of those stars. On the HARPS-N solar dataset, thanks to significantly more data, our algorithm is even more efficient at mitigating stellar activity signals and can reach a threshold of 0.2 m s−1, which would correspond to a 2.2 M⊕ planet on the orbit of the Earth. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that such low detection thresholds are reported for the Sun, but also for other stars, and therefore this highlights the efficiency of our convolutional neural network-based algorithm at mitigating stellar activity in RV measurements. Studies of the rotation and activity of M type stars are essential in order to enhance our understanding of stellar dynamos and angular momentum evolution. Using the outstanding photometric capabilities of space telescopes, even those rotation signals with low amplitudes can now be investigated in previously unrivaled detail. By combining data of K2 and the TESS prime mission, the star spot activity of M dwarfs can be monitored over a timescale of half a decade. In the framework of our study on the rotation–activity relation for bright and nearby M dwarfs, we also aim to investigate their long-term activity. While K2 was observing fields distributed around the ecliptic plane, the TESS prime mission was oriented along a line of ecliptic longitude, with one camera centered on an ecliptic pole. Due to these different observing strategies, the overlap between K2 and the TESS prime mission is marginal. However, 45 stars from our sample were observed with both missions, and of these, two early M-type stars that fulfill our selection criteria, EPIC 202059229 and EPIC 245919787, were analyzed in more detail. We find that, for both stars, the rotation period did not change, while the rotational phase did change for EPIC 245919787 by ∼0.2. The amplitude of the spot-induced variability changed for both stars but more significantly for EPIC 245919787. By comparing the cumulative flare frequency distributions, we find that the flare activity for EPIC 202059229 is unchanged, while it slightly changes for EPIC 245919787 between the K2 and TESS epochs. Using a combination of light curves from K2 and TESS that span a baseline of up to 4.5 yr, we are able to measure significant differential rotation for EPIC 245919787. Furthermore, we show that combining missions like K2 and TESS is a promising method for detecting stellar activity cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Stellar variability strongly impacts the search for low-mass exoplanets with radial velocity techniques. Two types of planet-free time series can be used to quantify this impact: models and direct solar observations after a subtraction of the Solar System planetary contribution. Making a comparison among these approaches is necessary to improve the models, which can then be used for blind tests across a broad range of conditions. Aims. Our objective is therefore to validate the amplitude of the convective blueshift in plages used in our previous works, particularly in blind tests, with HARPS-N solar data. Methods. We applied our model to the structures observed at the time of HARPS-N observations and established a direct comparison between the radial velocity time series. To complete our diagnosis, we also studied the observed radial velocities separately for each diffraction order derived from the individual cross-correlation functions, as well as our line-by-line radial velocities. Results. We find that our previous model had been underestimating the amplitude of the convective blueshift inhibition by a factor of about 2. A direct estimation of the convective blueshift in the spectra, which is shown to be correlated with the plage filling factor, allows us to explain the difference with previous estimations obtained with MDI/SOHO Dopplergrams, based on the specific properties of the Ni line used in this mission. In addition, we identified several instrumental systematics, in particular, the presence of a 2 m s−1 peak-to-peak signal with a period of about 200 days in radial velocity and bisector. This signal could be due to periodic detector warmups, a systematic dependence of the long-term trend on wavelength that is possibly related to the variability of the continuum over time, and/or an offset in radial velocity after the interruption of several months in October 2017. Conclusions. A large amplitude in the convective blueshift inhibition of (360 ms−1, namely twice more than in our previous works) must be used when building synthetic times series for blind tests. The presence of instrumental systematics should also be taken into account when using sophisticated methods based on line properties to mitigate stellar activity when searching for very weak signals. Context. HAT-P-67 b is one of the lowest-density gas giants known to date, making it an excellent target for atmospheric characterisation through the transmission spectroscopy technique. Aims. In the framework of the GAPS large programme, we collected four transit events of HAT-P-67 b with the aim of studying the exoplanet atmosphere and deriving the orbital projected obliquity. Methods. We exploited the high-precision GIARPS (GIANO-B + HARPS-N) observing mode of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) along with additional archival TESS photometry to explore the activity level of the host star. We performed transmission spec-troscopy, both in the visible (VIS) and in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range, and we analysed the Rossiter–McLaughlin (RML) effect when fitting both the radial velocities and the Doppler shadow. Based on the TESS photometry, we redetermined the transit parameters of HAT-P-67 b. Results. By modelling the RML effect, we derived a sky-projected obliquity of (2.2 ± 0.4)°, indicating an aligned planetary orbit. The chromospheric activity index log R′HK, the CCF profile, and the variability in the transmission spectrum of the Hα line suggest that the host star shows signatures of stellar activity and/or pulsation. We found no evidence of atomic or molecular species in the optical transmission spectra, with the exception of pseudo-signals corresponding to Cr I, Fe I, Ha, Na I, and Ti I. In the NIR range, we found an absorption signal of the He I triplet of 5.56−0.30+0.29% (19.0σ), corresponding to an effective planetary radius of ~3 Rp (where Rp ~ 2 RJ), which extends beyond the planet's Roche lobe radius. Conclusions. Owing to the stellar variability and the high uncertainty of the model, we could not confirm the planetary origin of the signals found in the optical transmission spectrum. On the other hand, we were able to confirm previous detections of the infrared He I triplet, providing a 19.0σ detection. Our finding indicates that the planet's atmosphere is evaporating. Context. Pipelines of state-of-the-art spectrographs dedicated to planet detection provide, for each exposure, series of cross-correlation functions (CCFs) built with a binary mask (BM), as well as the absolute radial velocity (RV) derived from the Gaussian fit of a weighted average CCFtot of the CCFs. Aims. Our aim was to test the benefits of the application of the shift-finding algorithm developed by Pierre Connes directly to the total CCFtot, and to compare the resulting RV shifts (DRVs) with the results of the Gaussian fits. In a second step, we investigated how the individual DRV profiles along the velocity grid derived from the shift-finding algorithm can be used as an easy tool for detection of stellar line shape variations. Methods. We developed the corresponding algorithm and tested it on 1151 archived spectra of the K2.5 V star HD 40307 obtained with ESO/ESPRESSO during a one-week campaign in 2018. Tests were performed based on the comparison of DRVs with RVs from Gaussian fits. DRV profiles along the velocity grid (DRV(i)) were scrutinized and compared with direct CCFtot ratios. Results. The dispersion of residuals from a linear fit to RVs from 406 spectra recorded within a single night, a measure of mean error, was found to be σ = 1.03 and 0.83 m s−1 for the Gaussian fit and the new algorithm, respectively, which is a significant 20% improvement in accuracy. The two full one-week series obtained during the campaign were also fitted with a three-planet system Keplerian model. The residual divergence between data and best-fit model is significantly smaller for the new algorithm than for the Gaussian fit. Such a difference was found to be associated in a large part with an increase of ≃1.3 m s−1 in the difference between the two types of RV values between the third and fourth nights. Interestingly, the DRV(i) profiles reveal at the same time a significant variation of line shape. Conclusions. The shift-finding algorithm is a fast and easy tool that provides additional diagnostics on the RV measurements in series of exposures. For observations made in the same instrumental configuration, and if line shapes are not varying significantly, it increases the accuracy of velocity variation determinations. On the other hand, departures from constancy of the DRV(i) profiles, as well as varying differences between RVs from this new method and RVs from a Gaussian fit can detect and report in a simple way line shape variations due to stellar activity. We present the discovery of three super-Earth candidates orbiting HD 48948, a bright K-dwarf star with an apparent magnitude of |$m_V$|  = 8.58 mag. As part of the HARPS-N Rocky Planet Search programme, we collect 189 high-precision radial velocity measurements using the HARPS-N spectrograph from 2013 October 6, to 2023 April 16. Various methodologies are applied to extract the radial velocities from the spectra, and we conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of the outcomes obtained through these diverse extraction techniques. To ensure the robustness of our findings, we employ several methods to address stellar variability, with a focus on Gaussian Process regression. To account for the impact of stellar variability and correlated noise in the radial velocity data set, we include activity indicators, such as |$\log R^{^{\prime }}_{\mathrm{HK}}$| and bisector span, in the multidimensional Gaussian Process regression. Our analysis reveals three planetary candidates with orbital periods of 7.3, 38, and 151 d, and minimum masses estimated at |$4.88 \pm 0.21$| M |$_{\oplus }$|⁠ , |$7.27 \pm 0.70$| M |$_{\oplus }$|⁠ , and |$10.59 \pm 1.00$| M |$_{\oplus }$|⁠ , respectively. The outermost planet resides within the (temperate) habitable zone, positioned at a projected distance of |$0.029\,{\rm arcsec}$| from its star. Given the close proximity of this planetary system, situated at a distance of 16.8 parsecs, HD 48498 emerges as a promising target (closest super-Earth around FGK stars) for future high-contrast direct imaging and high-resolution spectroscopic studies. Stellar magnetic activity induces both distortions and Doppler-shifts in the absorption line profiles of Sun-like stars. Those effects produce apparent radial velocity (RV) signals which greatly hamper the search for potentially habitable, Earth-like planets. In this work, we investigate these distortions in the Sun using cross-correlation functions (CCFs), derived from intensive monitoring with the high-precision spectrograph HARPS-N. We show that the RV signal arising from line-shape variations on time-scales associated with the Sun's rotation and activity cycle can be robustly extracted from the data, reducing the RV dispersion by half. Once these have been corrected, activity-induced Doppler-shifts remain, that are modulated at the solar rotation period, and that are most effectively modelled in the time domain, using Gaussian processes (GPs). Planet signatures are still best retrieved with multidimensonal GPs, when activity is jointly modelled from the raw RVs and indicators of the line width or of the Ca  ii H & K emission. After GP modelling, the residual RVs exhibit a dispersion of 0.6–0.8 m s−1, likely to be dominated by signals induced by supergranulation. Finally, we find that the statistical properties of the RVs evolve significantly over time, and that this evolution is primarily driven by sunspots, which control the smoothness of the signal. Such evolution, which reduces the sensitivity to long-period planet signatures, is no longer seen in the activity-induced Doppler-shifts, which is promising for long term RV monitoring surveys such as the Terra Hunting Experiment or the PLATO follow-up campaign. As the hunt for an Earth-like exoplanets has intensified in recent years, so has the effort to characterize and model the stellar signals that can hide or mimic small planetary signals. Stellar variability arises from a number of sources, including granulation, supergranulation, oscillations, and activity, all of which result in quasi-periodic or stochastic behaviour in photometric and/or radial velocity observations. Traditionally, the characterization of these signals has mostly been done in the frequency domain. However, the recent development of scalable Gaussian process regression methods makes direct time-domain modelling of stochastic processes a feasible and arguably preferable alternative, obviating the need to estimate the power spectral density of the data before modelling it. In this paper, we compare the two approaches using a series of experiments on simulated data. We show that frequency-domain modelling can lead to inaccurate results, especially when the time-sampling is irregular. By contrast, Gaussian process regression results are often more precise, and systematically more accurate, in both the regular and irregular time-sampling regimes. While this work was motivated by the analysis of radial velocity and photometry observations of main-sequence stars in the context of planet searches, we note that our results may also have applications for the study of other types of astrophysical variability such as quasi-periodic oscillations in X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei variability. The morphology of galaxies is shaped by stellar activity, feedback, gas and dust properties, and interactions with surroundings, and can therefore provide insight into these processes. In this paper, we study the spatial offsets between stellar and interstellar medium emission in a sample of 54 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 4–6 observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), and drawn from the ALMA Large Program to INvestigate C+ at Early times (ALPINE). We find no significant spatial offset for the majority (∼70 per cent) of galaxies in the sample among any combination of [C  ii ], far-infrared continuum, optical, and ultraviolet emission. However, a fraction of the sample (∼30 per cent) shows offsets larger than the median by more than 3σ significance (compared to the uncertainty on the offsets), especially between [C  ii ] and ultraviolet emission. We find that these significant offsets are of the order of ∼0.5–0.7 arcsec, corresponding to ∼3.5–4.5 kiloparsecs. The offsets could be caused by a complex dust geometry, strong feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei, large-scale gas inflow and outflow, or a combination of these phenomena. However, our current analysis does not definitively constrain the origin. Future, higher resolution ALMA and JWST observations may help resolve the ambiguity. Regardless, since there exist at least some galaxies that display such large offsets, galaxy models and spectral energy distribution fitting codes cannot assume co-spatial emission in all main-sequence galaxies, and must take into account that the observed emission across wavelengths may be spatially segregated. In this work, we use 8 years of deep near-infrared imaging to select and study a new set of 601 active galaxies identified through long-term near-infrared (NIR) variability in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). These objects are compared to 710 X-ray bright Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) detected by the Chandra X-ray observatory. We show that infrared variability and X-ray emission select distinct sets of active galaxies, finding only a 37 per cent overlap of galaxies detected by both techniques and confirming NIR-variable AGN to be typically X-ray quiet. Examining the mass functions of the active galaxies shows that NIR variability detects AGN activity in galaxies over a significantly wider range of host stellar mass compared to X-ray detection. For example, at z ∼ 1, variable AGN are identified among approximately 1 per cent of galaxies in a roughly flat distribution above the stellar mass completeness limit (⁠|$\gt 10^{9}\rm \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠), while X-ray detection primarily identifies AGN in galaxies of higher mass (⁠|$\gt 10^{10}\rm \, {\rm M}_{\odot }$|⁠). We conclude that long-term near-infrared variability provides an important new tool for obtaining more complete samples of AGN in deep survey fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the short-period (∼5.32 h) and low-mass eclipsing binary TMTSJ0803 discovered by Tsinghua-Ma Huateng Telescope for Survey (TMTS). By fitting the light curves and radial velocity data with the Wilson–Devinney code, we find that the binary is composed of two late spotted active M dwarfs below the fully convective boundary. This is supported by the discovery of a significant Balmer emission lines in the LAMOST spectrum and prominent coronal X-ray emission. In comparison with the typical luminosity of rapidly rotating fully convective stars, the much brighter X-ray luminosity (L X/ L bol = 0.0159 ± 0.0059) suggests the stellar magnetic activity of fully convective stars could be enhanced in such a close binary system. Given the metallicity of [M/H] = − 0.35 dex as inferred from the LAMOST spectrum, we measure the masses and radii of both stars to be M 1 = 0.169 ± 0.010 M⊙, M 2 = 0.162 ± 0.016 M⊙, R 1 = 0.170 ± 0.006 R⊙, and R 2 = 0.156 ± 0.006 R⊙, respectively. Based on the luminosity ratio from the light-curve modelling, the effective temperatures of two components are also estimated. In comparison with the stellar evolution models, the radii, and effective temperatures of two components are all below the isochrones. The radius deflation might be mainly biased by a small radial velocity (RV) data or (and) a simple correction on RVs, while the discrepancy in effective temperature might be due to the enhanced magnetic activity in this binary. We report on the discovery of Gliese 12 b, the nearest transiting temperate, Earth-sized planet found to date. Gliese 12 is a bright (V  = 12.6 mag, K  = 7.8 mag) metal-poor M4V star only 12.162 ± 0.005 pc away from the Solar system with one of the lowest stellar activity levels known for M-dwarfs. A planet candidate was detected by TESS based on only 3 transits in sectors 42, 43, and 57, with an ambiguity in the orbital period due to observational gaps. We performed follow-up transit observations with CHEOPS and ground-based photometry with MINERVA-Australis, SPECULOOS, and Purple Mountain Observatory, as well as further TESS observations in sector 70. We statistically validate Gliese 12 b as a planet with an orbital period of 12.76144 ± 0.00006 d and a radius of 1.0 ± 0.1 R⊕, resulting in an equilibrium temperature of ∼315 K. Gliese 12 b has excellent future prospects for precise mass measurement, which may inform how planetary internal structure is affected by the stellar compositional environment. Gliese 12 b also represents one of the best targets to study whether Earth-like planets orbiting cool stars can retain their atmospheres, a crucial step to advance our understanding of habitability on Earth and across the galaxy. Radio bursts of magnetically active stars reveal the intensity and activity of the stellar magnetic field. They may also be related to the planets around the stars. We monitored a radio-active star, AD Leonis, 3000 s d−1 for 17 d in 2020 November, and 5000 s d−1 for 5 d in 2023 July with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Based on the simultaneous flux increases in Stokes I and Stokes V, one left-hand circular polarized radio burst is identified. The |$\sim 50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| degree of circular polarization indicates the burst being originated from non-thermal radiation related to the stellar magnetic field. Combining the newly discovered burst with previous observations of radio and X-ray bursts from AD Leonis, we did a periodicity analysis for the 49 bursts in total. No periodicity with confidence level >3σ is found, while a candidate period of 3.04 d at ≈2σ confidence level is presented and discussed. Results of recent FAST observations and the periodicity analysis suggest a more compact campaign of observation towards this source, from which a more optimistic result of period search could be achieved. L 98-59b is a transiting exoplanet with radius |${0.85^{+0.061}_{-0.047}}$| R ⊕ and orbital period |${2.2531136^{+1.2e-06}_{-1.5e-06}}$| d. In 2021, a Doppler detection of  L 98-59b was announced, with radial velocity (RV) semi-amplitude |$K_{\rm b}=0.46^{+0.20}_{-0.17}$| |$\textrm {m}\, \textrm {s}^{-1}$| inferred from 164 High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher and 66 Échelle SPectrograph for Rocky Exoplanets and Stable Spectroscopic Observation RVs. This translated into a mass |$M_{\rm b}=0.40^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$| M ⊕, or half the mass of Venus, making  L 98-59b then (by far) the lowest mass planet with a putative RV detection. To illuminate the difficulties in securely detecting <1  |$\textrm {m}\, \textrm {s}^{-1}$|  signals, we argue here that the published RV detection of  L 98-59b is not supported by sufficient statistical evidence. We show, under the published modelling assumptions, that Bayesian model comparison (BMC) suggests an |$\sim 50~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| false-detection probability. We also often infer ∼40  |$\textrm {cm}\, \textrm {s}^{-1}$| semi-amplitudes for Keplerians with periods not corresponding to any known planet; importantly, though, BMC rejects all these 'detections'. By implementing a more sophisticated stellar activity model and more realistic parameter priors, we infer a mass M b = 0.47 ± 0.14 M ⊕ from semi-amplitude K b = 0.56 ± 0.16  |$\textrm {m}\, \textrm {s}^{-1}$|⁠ , with BMC now indicating substantial yet still not decisive evidence for the detection. Definitive detection and characterization may require many additional RVs, alongside careful modelling and stringent statistical analysis. Using adaptive optics with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer on the Very Large Telescope, the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral Field Spectroscopy survey allows us to study the spatially resolved Universe at a crucial time of ∼4 Gyr ago (z ∼ 0.3) when simulations predict the greatest diversity in evolutionary pathways for galaxies. We investigate the radial trends in the star formation (SF) activity and luminosity-weighted stellar ages as a function of offset from the star-forming main sequence (SFMS) for a total of 294 galaxies. Using both Hα emission and the 4000 Å break (i.e. D4000) as star formation rate (SFR) tracers, we find overall flat radial profiles for galaxies lying on and above the SFMS, suggestive of physical processes that enhance/regulate SF throughout the entire galaxy disc. However, for galaxies lying below the SFMS, we find positive gradients in SF suggestive of inside–out quenching. Placing our results in context with results from other redshift regimes suggests an evolution in radial trends at z ∼ 0.3 for SF galaxies above the SFMS, from uniformly enhanced SF at z ∼ 1 and ∼ 0.3 to centrally enhanced SF at z ∼ 0 (when averaged over a wide range of mass). We also capture higher local SFRs for galaxies below the SFMS compared to that of z ∼ 0, which can be explained by a larger population of quenched satellites in the local Universe and/or different treatments of limitations set by the D4000–sSFR relation. The number of super-Earth and mini-Neptune planet discoveries has increased significantly in the last two decades thanks to transit and radial velocity (RV) surveys. When it is possible to apply both techniques, we can characterise the internal composition of exoplanets, which in turn provides unique insights on their architecture, formation and evolution. We performed a combined photometric and RV analysis of TOI-238 (TYC 6398-132-1), which has one short-orbit super-Earth planet candidate announced by NASA's TESS team. We aim to confirm its planetary nature using radial velocities taken with the ESPRESSO and HARPS spectrographs, to measure its mass, and to detect the presence of other possible planetary companions. We carried out a joint analysis by including Gaussian processes and Keplerian orbits to account for the stellar activity and planetary signals simultaneously. We detected the signal induced by TOI-238 b in the RV time series, and the presence of a second transiting planet, TOI-238 c, whose signal appears in RV and TESS data. TOI-238 b is a planet with a radius of 1.402−0.086+0.084R⊕ and a mass of 3.40−0.45+0.46M⊕. It orbits at a separation of 0.02118 ± 0.00038 au of its host star, with an orbital period of 1.2730988 ± 0.0000029 days, and has an equilibrium temperature of 1311 ± 28 K. TOI-238 c has a radius of 2.18 ± 0.18 R⊕ and a mass of 6.7 ± 1.1 M⊕. It orbits at a separation of 0.0749 ± 0.0013 au of its host star, with an orbital period of 8.465652 ± 0.000031 days, and has an equilibrium temperature of 696 ± 15 K. The mass and radius of planet b are fully consistent with an Earth-like composition, making it a likely rocky super-Earth. Despite the thousands of planets in orbit around stars known to date, the mechanisms of planetary formation, migration, and atmospheric loss remain unresolved. In this work, we confirm the planetary nature of a young Saturn-size planet transiting a solar-type star every 8.03 d, TOI-1135 b. The age of the parent star is estimated to be in the interval of 125-1000 Myr based on various activity and age indicators, including its stellar rotation period of 5.13 ± 0.27 days and the intensity of photospheric lithium. We obtained follow-up photometry and spectroscopy, including precise radial velocity measurements using the CARMENES spectrograph, which together with the TESS data allowed us to fully characterise the parent star and its planet. As expected for its youth, the star is rather active and shows strong photometric and spectroscopic variability correlating with its rotation period. We modelled the stellar variability using Gaussian process regression. We measured the planetary radius at 9.02 ± 0.23 R⊕ (0.81 ± 0.02 RJup) and determined a 3σ upper limit of < 51.4 M⊕ (< 0.16 MJup) on the planetary mass by adopting a circular orbit. Our results indicate that TOI-1135 b is an inflated planet less massive than Saturn or Jupiter but with a similar radius, which could be in the process of losing its atmosphere by photoevaporation. This new young planet occupies a region of the mass-radius diagram where older planets are scarse, and it could be very helpful to understanding the lower frequency of planets with sizes between Neptune and Saturn. Aims. Our aim in this paper is to refine the orbital and physical parameters of the HATS-2 planetary system and study transit timing variations and atmospheric composition thanks to transit observations that span more than 10 yr and that were collected using different instruments and pass-band filters. We also investigate the orbital alignment of the system by studying the anomalies in the transit light curves induced by starspots on the photosphere of the parent star. Methods. We analysed new transit events from both ground-based telescopes and NASA's TESS mission. Anomalies were detected in most of the light curves and modelled as starspots occulted by the planet during transit events. We fitted the clean and symmetric light curves with the JKTEBOP code and those affected by anomalies with the PRISM+GEMC codes to simultaneously model the photometric parameters of the transits and the position, size, and contrast of each starspot. Results. We found consistency between the values we found for the physical and orbital parameters and those from the discovery paper and ATLAS9 stellar atmospherical models. We identified different sets of consecutive starspot-crossing events that temporally occurred in less than five days. Under the hypothesis that we are dealing with the same starspots, occulted twice by the planet during two consecutive transits, we estimated the rotational period of the parent star and, in turn the projected and the true orbital obliquity of the planet. We find that the system is well aligned. We identified the possible presence of transit timing variations in the system, which can be caused by tidal orbital decay, and we derived a low-resolution transmission spectrum. Transmission spectroscopy is a proven technique for studying a transiting exoplanet's atmosphere. However, stellar surface inhomogeneities – spots and faculae – alter the observed transmission spectra: the stellar contamination effect. The variable nature of the stellar activity also makes it difficult to stitch together multi-epoch observations and evaluate any potential variability in the exoplanet's atmosphere. This paper introduces SAGE, a tool that corrects for the time-dependent impact of stellar activity on transmission spectra. It uses a pixelation approach to model the stellar surface with spots and faculae, while fully accounting for limb-darkening and rotational line-broadening. The current version is designed for low- to medium-resolution spectra. We used SAGE to evaluate stellar contamination for F- to M-type hosts, testing various spot sizes and locations, and quantify the impact of limb-darkening. We find that limb-darkening enhances the importance of the spot location on the stellar disc, with spots close to the disc centre impacting the transmission spectra more strongly than spots near the limb. Moreover, due to the chromaticity of limb-darkening, the shape of the contamination spectrum is also altered. Additionally, SAGE can be used to retrieve the properties and distribution of active regions on the stellar surface from photometric monitoring. We demonstrate this for WASP-69 using TESS data, finding that two spots at midlatitudes and a combined coverage fraction of ~1% are favoured. SAGE allows us to connect the photometric variability to the stellar contamination of transmission spectra, enhancing our ability to jointly interpret transmission spectra obtained at different epochs. Detailed atmospheric characterization of exoplanets by transmission spectroscopy requires careful consideration of stellar surface inhomogeneities induced by star-spots. This effect is particularly problematic for planetary systems around M-dwarfs, and their spot properties are not fully understood. We investigated the stellar activity of the young M-dwarf K2-25 and its effect on transit observations of the sub-Neptune K2-25 b. From multiband monitoring observations of stellar brightness variability using ground-based telescopes and Transiting Exoplanets Survey Satellite , we found that the temperature difference between the spots and photosphere is <190 K and the spot covering fraction is <61 per cent (2σ). We also investigated the effect of starspot activity using multiepoch, multiband transit observations. We rule out cases with extremely low spot temperatures and large spot covering fractions. The results suggest that spots could distort the transmission spectrum of K2-25 b by as much as ∼100 ppm amplitude, corresponding to the precision of JWST /NIRSPEC of the target. Our study demonstrates that simultaneous multiband observations with current instruments can constrain the spot properties of M-dwarfs with good enough precision to support atmospheric studies of young M-dwarf planets via transmission spectroscopy. The super-Earth LHS 1140 b is an interesting target for atmospheric observations since it is close to the habitable zone of its star and falls in the gap of the radius distribution of small exoplanets, in the region thought to correspond to the transition between planets with and without atmospheres. Observations of the primary transit with WFC3 onboard of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) revealed a modulation in the planet transmission spectrum compatible with the presence of water; however, this modulation may be also due to stellar activity-related phenomena. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the WFC3/ HST observations to probe the nature of this modulation and to understand if it can be attributable to the presence of unocculted spots on the stellar surface. Our analysis strongly suggests that LHS1140 is a rather quiet star with subsolar [Fe/H] and enriched in α elements. Therefore, we rule out the possibility that the planetary spectrum is affected by the presence of spots and faculae. This analysis shows the importance of a proper modelling of the stellar spectrum when analysing transit observations. Finally, we modelled the planetary atmosphere of LHS1140 b to retrieve its atmospheric composition. However, the low resolution and the narrow spectral range of HST observations prevented us from definitively determining whether the spectral features are attributable to the presence of water or of other molecules in the planetary atmosphere. This study combines 8 years of middle atmospheric wind data observed at 52°N latitude from two radars in different longitudinal sectors to investigate solar tides. The power spectral density of horizontal winds exhibits a −3 power law within the frequency range 2.0 < f < 7.0 cpd (equivalent to periods 3.6 − 12.0 hr). Particularly noteworthy are the 4.8‐ and 4‐hr tides, exhibiting signal‐to‐noise ratios ranging between 13 and 16 dB, surpassing the 0.01 significance level. This challenges their previous oversight in literature, possibly due to inadequacies in prevailing noise models. Cross‐spectra between longitudinal sectors emphasize the dominance of sun‐synchronous components in the six lowest‐frequency tides. Composite spectra indicate that tidal enhancements during SSWs resemble regular seasonal variations. Intriguingly, year‐to‐year spectral variations suggest that these enhancements are more influenced by seasonal dynamics than by SSW, contrasting with established literature. These findings underscore the need to reevaluate tidal harmonics and consider appropriate noise models in future studies. However, most existing literature focuses on the lowest‐frequency tidal harmonics, with limited attention given to higher‐frequency ones. In the Earth's atmosphere, the exact count of solar tidal harmonics remains uncertain, and an ongoing debate persists regarding the existence of higher‐frequency harmonics, arising potentially from difficulties in distinguishing them from sporadic regional buoyancy waves. Here, we provide evidence for the statistically significant existence of the first six orders of tidal harmonics, extracted from 8 years of middle atmospheric wind observations. Spectral coherence between two distinct longitudinal sectors signifies that the six harmonics primarily correspond to sun‐synchronous tides synchronized with the Sun. The presence of higher‐frequency tides suggests that tidal effects are characterized by greater complexity than currently understood. We report precise radial velocity (RV) observations of HD 212657 (= K2-167), a star shown by K2 to host a transiting sub-Neptune-sized planet in a 10 d orbit. Using Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) photometry, we refined the planet parameters, especially the orbital period. We collected 74 precise RVs with the HARPS-N spectrograph between August 2015 and October 2016. Although this planet was first found to transit in 2015 and validated in 2018, excess RV scatter originally limited mass measurements. Here, we measure a mass by taking advantage of reductions in scatter from updates to the HARPS-N Data Reduction System (2.3.5) and our new activity mitigation method called CCF Activity Linear Model (CALM), which uses activity-induced line shape changes in the spectra without requiring timing information. Using the CALM framework, we performed a joint fit with RVs and transits using exofast v2 and find Mp  = |$6.3_{-1.4}^{+1.4}$|   |$\, M_{\hbox{$\oplus $}}$| and Rp  = |$2.33^{+0.17}_{-0.15}$|   |$\, R_{\hbox{$\oplus $}}$|⁠ , which places K2-167 b at the upper edge of the radius valley. We also find hints of a secondary companion at a ∼22 d period, but confirmation requires additional RVs. Although characterizing lower mass planets like K2-167 b is often impeded by stellar variability, these systems especially help probe the formation physics (i.e. photoevaporation, core-powered mass-loss) of the radius valley. In the future, CALM or similar techniques could be widely applied to FGK-type stars, help characterize a population of exoplanets surrounding the radius valley, and further our understanding of their formation. Extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) are significant observational targets for spaceborne gravitational wave detectors, namely, LISA, Taiji, and Tianqin, which involve the inspiral of stellar-mass compact objects into massive black holes (MBHs) with a mass range of approximately 10 4 ∼ 10 7 M ⊙ . EMRIs are estimated to produce long-lived gravitational wave signals with more than 10 5 cycles before plunge, making them an ideal laboratory for exploring the strong-gravity properties of the spacetimes around the MBHs, stellar dynamics in galactic nuclei, and properties of the MBHs itself. However, the complexity of the waveform model, which involves the superposition of multiple harmonics, as well as the high-dimensional and large-volume parameter space, make the fully coherent search challenging. In our previous work, we proposed a 10-dimensional search using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) with local maximization over the three initial angles. In this study, we extend the search to an 8-dimensional PSO with local maximization over both the three initial angles and the angles of spin direction of the MBH, where the latter contribute a time-independent amplitude to the waveforms. Additionally, we propose a 7-dimensional PSO search by using a fiducial value for the initial orbital frequency and shifting the corresponding 8-dimensional Time Delay Interferometry responses until a certain lag returns the corresponding 8-dimensional log-likelihood ratio's maximum. The reduced dimensionality likelihoods enable us to successfully search for EMRI signals with a duration of 0.5 years and signal-to-noise ratio of 50 within a wider search range than our previous study. However, the ranges used by both the LISA Data Challenge (LDC) and Mock LISA Data Challenge (MLDC) to generate their simulated signals are still wider than the those we currently employ in our direct searches. Consequently, we discuss further developments, such as using a hierarchical search to narrow down the search ranges of certain parameters and applying Graphics Processing Units to speed up the code. EUV radiation is primarily responsible for driving hydrodynamic mass loss and thus determining whether an exoplanet can retain its atmosphere and water. The Lyman- α flux is primarily responsible for photo-dissociating water and methane, and therefore plays a major role in determining the chemistry in the upper atmospheres of exoplanets. Since interstellar hydrogen absorbs much of the EUV and Lyman- α radiation, reconstruction and theoretical techniques are needed to determine the intrinsic flux levels received by exoplanets. We describe the techniques and their limitations for estimating the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral energy distribution (10–91.2 nm) and hydrogen Lyman- α flux (121.6 nm) emitted by host stars and incident on exoplanet atmospheres. We evaluate how each reconstruction technique can match the observed solar EUV spectral energy distribution and Lyman- α flux. Each technique has its limitations, but the techniques that can reconstruct the observed solar emission and are based on stellar activity observables that are not affected by interstellar absorption should best explain the intrinsic EUV and Lyman- α stellar emission. Traditionally, heliophysics is characterized as the study of the near-Earth space environment, where plasmas and neutral gases originating from the Earth, the Sun, and other solar system bodies interact in ways that are detectable only through in-situ or close-range (usually within ∼10 AU) remote sensing. As a result, heliophysics has data from the space environment around a handful of solar system objects, in particular the Sun and Earth. Comparatively, astrophysics has data from an extensive array of objects, but is more limited in temporal, spatial, and wavelength information from any individual object. Thus, our understanding of planetary space environments as a complex, multi-dimensional network of specific interacting systems may in the past have seemed to have little to do with the highly diverse space environments detected through astrophysical methods. Recent technological advances have begun to bridge this divide. Exoplanetary studies are opening up avenues to study planetary environments beyond our solar system, with missions like Kepler, TESS, and JWST, along with increasing capabilities of ground-based observations. At the same time, heliophysics studies are pushing beyond the boundaries of our heliosphere with Voyager, IBEX, and the future IMAP mission. The interdisciplinary field of star-exoplanet interactions is a critical, growing area of study that enriches heliophysics. A multidisciplinary approach to heliophysics enables us to better understand universal processes that operate in diverse environments, as well as the evolution of our solar system and extreme space weather. The expertise, data, theory, and modeling tools developed by heliophysicists are crucial in understanding the space environments of exoplanets, their host stars, and their potential habitability. The mutual benefit that heliophysics and exoplanetary studies offer each other depends on strong, continuing solar system-focused and Earth-focused heliophysics studies. The heliophysics discipline requires new targeted funding to support inter-divisional opportunities, including small multi-disciplinary research projects, large collaborative research teams, and observations targeting the heliophysics of planetary and exoplanet systems. Here we discuss areas of heliophysics-relevant exoplanetary research, observational opportunities and challenges, and ways to promote the inclusion of heliophysics within the wider exoplanetary community.

While the mission's primary goal was focused on exoplanet detection and characterization, Kepler made and continues to make extraordinary advances in stellar physics. Stellar rotation and magnetic activity are no exceptions. Kepler allowed for these properties to be determined for tens of thousands of stars from the main sequence up to the red giant branch. From photometry, this can be achieved by investigating the brightness fluctuations due to active regions, which cause surface inhomogeneities, or through asteroseismology as oscillation modes are sensitive to rotation and magnetic fields. This review summarizes the rotation and magnetic activity properties of the single main-sequence solar-like stars within the Kepler field. We contextualize the Kepler sample by comparing it to known transitions in the stellar rotation and magnetic-activity evolution, such as the convergence to the rotation sequence (from the saturated to the unsaturated regime of magnetic activity) and the Vaughan-Preston gap. While reviewing the publicly available data, we also uncover one interesting finding related to the intermediate-rotation gap seen in Kepler and other surveys. We find evidence for this rotation gap in previous ground-based data for the X-ray luminosity. Understanding the complex evolution and interplay between rotation and magnetic activity in solar-like stars is crucial, as it sheds light on fundamental processes governing stellar evolution, including the evolution of our own Sun. Context. The intrinsic variability due to the magnetic activity of young active stars is one of the main challenges in detecting and characterising exoplanets. The stellar activity is responsible for jitter effects observed both in photometric and spectroscopic observations that can impact our planetary detection sensitivity. Aims. We present a method able to model the stellar photosphere and its surface inhomogeneities (starspots) in young, active, and fast-rotating stars based on the cross-correlation function (CCF) technique, and we extract information about the spot configuration of the star. Methods. We developed Spot CCF, a tool able to model the deformation of the CCF profile due to the presence of multiple spots on the stellar surface. Within the Global Architecture of Planetary Systems (GAPS) Project at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we analysed more than 300 spectra of the young planet-hosting star V1298 Tau provided by the HARPS-N high-resolution spectrograph. By applying the SpotCCF model to the CCFs, we extracted the spot configuration (latitude, longitude, and projected filling factor) of this star, and provide a new radial velocity (RV) time series for this target. Results. We find that the features identified in the CCF profiles of V1298 Tau are modulated by the stellar rotation, supporting our assumption that they are caused by starspots. The analysis suggests a differential rotation velocity of the star with lower rotation at higher latitudes. Also, we find that SpotCCF provides an improvement in RV extraction, with a significantly lower dispersion with respect to the commonly used pipelines. This allows mitigation of the stellar activity contribution modulated with stellar rotation. A detection sensitivity test, involving the direct injection of a planetary signal into the data, confirms that the SpotCCF model improves the sensitivity and ability to recover planetary signals. Conclusions. Our method enables us to model the stellar photosphere and extract the spot configuration of young, active, and rapidly rotating stars. Although instruments for measuring the radial velocities (RVs) of stars now routinely reach sub-metre per second accuracy, the detection of low-mass planets is still very challenging. The rotational modulation and evolution of spots and/or faculae can induce variations in the RVs at the level of a few m s–1 in Sun-like stars. To overcome this, a multidimensional Gaussian Process framework has been developed to model the stellar activity signal using spectroscopic activity indicators together with the RVs. A recently published computationally efficient implementation of this framework, S + LEAF 2 , enables the rapid analysis of large samples of targets with sizeable data sets. In this work, we apply this framework to HARPS observations of 268 well-observed targets with precisely determined stellar parameters. Our long-term goal is to quantify the effectiveness of this framework to model and mitigate activity signals for stars of different spectral types and activity levels. In this first paper in the series, we initially focus on the activity indicators (S-index and Bisector Inverse Slope), and use them to (a) measure rotation periods for 49 slow rotators in our sample, (b) explore the impact of these results on the spin-down of middle-aged late F, G, and K stars, and (c) explore indirectly how the spot to facular ratio varies across our sample. Our results should provide valuable clues for planning future RV planet surveys such as the Terra Hunting Experiment or the PLATO ground-based follow-up observations programme, and help fine-tune current stellar structure and evolution models. Discovering exoplanets orbiting young Suns can provide insight into the formation and early evolution of our own solar system, but the extreme magnetic activity of young stars obfuscates exoplanet detection. Here we monitor the long-term magnetic field and chromospheric activity variability of the young solar analogue V889 Her, model the activity-induced radial velocity variations, and evaluate the impacts of extreme magnetism on exoplanet detection thresholds. We map the magnetic field and surface brightness for 14 epochs between 2004 and 2019. Our results show potential 3–4 yr variations of the magnetic field that evolves from weak and simple during chromospheric activity minima to strong and complex during activity maxima but without any polarity reversals. A persistent, temporally varying polar spot coexists with weaker, short-lived lower-latitude spots. Due to their different decay time-scales, significant differential rotation, and the limited temporal coverage of our legacy data, we were unable to reliably model the activity-induced radial velocity using Gaussian Process regression. Doppler Imaging can be a useful method for modelling the magnetic activity jitter of extremely active stars using data with large phase gaps. Given our data and using Doppler Imaging to filter activity jitter, we estimate that we could detect Jupiter-mass planets with orbital periods of |$\sim$| 3 d. Magnetars, the most strongly magnetized neutron stars, are among the most promising targets for X-ray polarimetry. Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), the first satellite devoted to exploring the sky in polarized X-rays, has observed four magnetars to date. A proper interpretation of IXPE results requires the development of new atmospheric models that can take into proper account the effects of the magnetized vacuum on par with those of the plasma. Here we investigate the effects of mode conversion at the vacuum resonance on the polarization properties of magnetar emission by computing plane-parallel atmospheric models under varying conditions of magnetic field strength/orientation, effective temperature, and allowing for either complete or partial adiabatic mode conversion. Complete mode conversion results in a switch of the dominant polarization mode, from the extraordinary (X) to the ordinary (O) one, below an energy that decreases with increasing magnetic field strength, occurring at |$\approx 0.5\, \mathrm{keV}$| for a magnetic field strength of |$B=10^{14}\, \mathrm{G}$|⁠. Partial adiabatic mode conversion results in a reduced polarization degree when compared with a standard plasma atmosphere. No dominant mode switch occurs for |$B=10^{14}\, \mathrm{G}$|⁠ , while there are two switches for lower fields of |$B=3\times 10^{13}\, \mathrm{G}$|⁠. Finally, by incorporating our models in a ray-tracing code, we computed the expected polarization signal at infinity for different emitting regions on the star surface and for different viewing geometries. The observability of quantum electrodynamics signatures with IXPE and with future soft X-ray polarimeters as Rocket Experiment Demonstration of a Soft X-ray Polarimeter is discussed. We propose a model of deep and prolonged eclipses in young UX Ori stars. Some of these events last for decades and existing models cannot explain them. We show that such eclipses can be caused by the infall of gas and dust clumps from the remnants of the protostellar cloud onto the protoplanetary disk. The perturbation in the disk caused by the infall of a clump leads to a burst of accretional stellar activity and, as a consequence, to a strengthening of the disk wind. If the circumstellar disk is tilted at a small angle to the line of sight, then the dust raised by the wind from the disk surface can cause a dramatic decrease in the stellar brightness that can last for decades. We outline the impact of a small two-band UV-photometry satellite mission on the field of stellar physics, magnetospheres of stars, binaries, stellar clusters, interstellar matter, and exoplanets. On specific examples of different types of stars and stellar systems, we discuss particular requirements for such a satellite mission in terms of specific mission parameters such as bandpass, precision, cadence, and mission duration. We show that such a mission may provide crucial data not only for hot stars that emit most of their light in UV, but also for cool stars, where UV traces their activity. This is important, for instance, for exoplanetary studies, because the level of stellar activity influences habitability. While the main asset of the two-band UV mission rests in time-domain astronomy, an example of open clusters proves that such a mission would be important also for the study of stellar populations. Properties of the interstellar dust are best explored when combining optical and IR information with observations in UV. It is well known that dust absorbs UV radiation efficiently. Consequently, we outline how such a UV mission can be used to detect eclipses of sufficiently hot stars by various dusty objects and study disks, rings, clouds, disintegrating exoplanets or exoasteroids. Furthermore, UV radiation can be used to study the cooling of neutron stars providing information about the extreme states of matter in the interiors of neutron stars and used for mapping heated spots on their surfaces. Using a fully Bayesian approach, Gaussian process regression is extended to include marginalization over the kernel choice and hyperparameters. In addition, Bayesian model comparison via the evidence enables direct kernel comparison. The calculation of the joint posterior was implemented with a transdimensional sampler which simultaneously samples over the discrete kernel choice and their hyperparameters by embedding these in a higher dimensional space, from which samples are taken using nested sampling. Kernel recovery and mean function inference were explored on synthetic data from exoplanet transit light-curve simulations. Subsequently, the method was extended to marginalization over mean functions and noise models and applied to the inference of the present-day Hubble parameter, H 0, from real measurements of the Hubble parameter as a function of redshift, derived from the cosmologically model-independent cosmic chronometer and lambda-cold dark matter-dependent baryon acoustic oscillation observations. The inferred H 0 values from the cosmic chronometers, baryon acoustic oscillations, and combined data sets are |$H_0= 66 \pm 6,\, 67 \pm 10,\, \mathrm{ and}\,69 \pm 6\,\mathrm{km}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$|⁠ , respectively. The kernel posterior of the cosmic chronometers data set prefers a non-stationary linear kernel. Finally, the data sets are shown to be not in tension with ln  R = 12.17 ± 0.02. The chemical enrichment of X-ray-emitting hot atmospheres has hitherto been primarily studied in galaxy clusters. These studies revealed relative abundances of heavy elements that are remarkably similar to Solar. Here, we present measurements of the metal content of M89 (NGC 4552), an elliptical galaxy infalling into the Virgo cluster with a ∼10 kpc ram-pressure stripped X-ray tail. We take advantage of deep Chandra and XMM–Newton observations, and with particular attention to carefully modelling the spectra, we measure the O/Fe, Ne/Fe, Mg/Fe, Si/Fe, and S/Fe ratios. Contrary to previous measurements in galaxy clusters, our results for the hot atmosphere of M89 suggest super-Solar abundance ratios with respect to iron (i.e. α/Fe > 1), similar to its stellar components. Our analysis of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in this system indicates that the AGN-induced outflow could have facilitated the stripping of the original galactic atmosphere, which has been replaced with fresh stellar mass-loss material with super-Solar α/Fe abundance ratios. Additionally, we report a new fitting bias in the RGS data of low-temperature plasma. The measured O/Fe ratios are >1σ lower in multitemperature models than a single temperature fit, leading to discrepancies in the calculations of supernova fractions derived from the metal abundances. We present an improved study of the relation between supermassive black hole growth and their host galaxy properties in the local Universe (z < 0.33). To this end, we build an extensive sample combining spectroscopic measurements of star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass from Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with specific Black Hole accretion rate (sBHAR, |$\lambda _{\mathrm{sBHAR}} \propto L_{\rm X}/\mathcal {M}_{\ast }$|⁠) derived from the XMM–Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue (3XMM–DR8) and the Chandra Source Catalogue (CSC2.0). We find that the sBHAR probability distribution for both star-forming and quiescent galaxies has a power-law shape peaking at log λsBHAR ∼ −3.5 and declining towards lower sBHAR in all stellar mass ranges. This finding confirms the decrease of active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in the local Universe compared to higher redshifts. We observe a significant correlation between |$\log \, \lambda _{\rm sBHAR}$| and |$\log \, {\rm SFR}$| in almost all stellar mass ranges, but the relation is shallower compared to higher redshifts, indicating a reduced availability of accreting material in the local Universe. At the same time, the BHAR-to-SFR ratio for star-forming galaxies strongly correlates with stellar mass, supporting the scenario where both AGN activity and stellar formation primarily depend on the stellar mass via fuelling by a common gas reservoir. Conversely, this ratio remains constant for quiescent galaxies, possibly indicating the existence of the different physical mechanisms responsible for AGN fuelling or different accretion mode in quiescent galaxies. Alpha Centauri is a triple stellar system, and it contains the closest star to Earth (Proxima Centauri). Over the last decades, the stars in Alpha Cen and their orbits have been investigated in great detail. However, the possible scenarios for planet formation and evolution in this triple stellar system remain to be explored further. First, we present a 3D hydrodynamical simulation of the circumstellar discs in the binary Alpha Cen AB. Then, we compute stability maps for the planets within Alpha Cen obtained through N-body integrations. Last, we estimate the radial velocity (RV) signals of such planets. We find that the circumstellar discs within the binary cannot exceed 3 au in radius and that the available dust mass to form planets is about 30 M ⊕ . Planets around A and B are stable if their semimajor axes are below 3 au, while those around C are stable and remain unperturbed by the binary AB. For rocky planets, the planetary mass has only a mild effect on the stability. Therefore, Alpha Cen could have formed and hosted rocky planets around each star, which may be detected with RV methods in the future. We report intensive monitoring of the activity variability in the Hα line for 10 Sun-like stars using the 1.88 m reflector at Okayama Branch Office, Subaru Telescope, during the last four years (2019–2022). Our aim was to investigate features of the stellar magnetic activity behavior. We correlated the Hα line variability of each star with the stellar activity levels derived from the Ca  ii H&K line, suggesting its efficiency as a magnetic activity indicator. In analyzing the Hα line variation, we observed that some stars exhibited linear or quadratic trends during the observation period. Among several G- and K-type stars expected to have co-existing activity cycles, we confirmed the 2.9 yr short cycle of ϵ Eri (K2V) from the Hα observations. Additionally, we established upper limits on the Hα variability of β Com (G0V) and κ1 Cet (G5V) concerning their expected shorter cycles. We also detected the possibility of short-term activity cycles in two F-type stars, β Vir (F9V; ∼530 d) and α CMi (F5IV-V; ∼130 d). The cycle in α CMi was observed in only one season of our 4 yr observations, suggesting the temporal absence of the cycle period. However, for stars with planets, we did not observe significant magnetic activity variability likely associated with the planetary orbital period. Despite the ever-growing number of exoplanets discovered and the extensive analyses carried out to find their potential satellites, only two exomoon candidates, Kepler-1625b-i and Kepler-1708 b-i, have been discovered to date. A considerable amount of effort has been invested in the development of algorithms for modelling, searching, and detecting exomoons in exoplanetary light curves. In this work, we incorporate moon handling capabilities into the state of the art and publicly available code, the Transit and Light Curve Modeller (tlcm). The code is designed for the analysis of transiting exoplanet systems with the inclusion of a wavelet-based noise handling algorithm. Here, we present an updated version of tlcm that is capable of modelling a coplanar planet–moon system on an elliptical orbit around its host, accounting for mutual eclipses between the two bodies (and neglecting perturbative effects) – a so-called photodynamic model. The key benefit of this framework is the ability for a joint analysis of multiple planet–moon transits. We demonstrate the necessity of this software on a case study of Kepler-1625b. Similarly to prior works, we conclude that there is no firm evidence of an exomoon in that system, by showing that temporally correlated noise can mimic apparent lunar transits. We present a photometric characterization of 208 ultra-cool dwarfs (UCDs) with spectral types between M4 and L4, from 20-s and 2-min cadence TESS light curves. We determine rotation periods for 87 objects (⁠|$\sim 42~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) and identify 778 flare events in 103 UCDs (⁠|$\sim 49.5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠). For 777 flaring events (corresponding to 102 objects), we derive bolometric energies between 2.1 × 1030 and |$1.1 \times 10^{34}\ \mathrm{erg}$|⁠ , with 56 superflare events. No transiting planets or eclipsing binaries were identified. We find that the fraction of UCDs with rotation and flaring activity is, at least, 20 per cent higher in M4–M6 spectral types than in later UCDs (M7–L4). For spectral types between M4 and L0, we measure the slope of the flare bolometric energy–duration correlation to be γ = 0.497 ± 0.058, which agrees with that found in previous studies for solar-type and M dwarfs. Moreover, we determine the slope of the flare frequency distribution to be α = −1.75 ± 0.04 for M4–M5 dwarfs, α = −1.69 ± 0.04 and α = −1.72 ± 0.1 for M6–M7 and M8–L0 dwarfs, respectively, which are consistent with previous works that exclusively analysed UCDs. These results support the idea that independently of the physical mechanisms that produce magnetic activity, the characteristics of the rotational modulation and flares are similar for both fully convective UCDs and partially convective solar-type and early-M stars. Based on the measured UCD flare distributions, we find that ultraviolet radiation emitted from flares does not have the potential to start prebiotic chemistry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interstellar radio wave scattering leads to flux density fluctuations and pulse broadening of pulsar signals. However, Galactic distribution and the structure of the scattering medium are still poorly understood. Pulsar pulse broadening data available for a relatively large number of pulsars is well suited for such investigations. We collected an up-to-date sample of publicly available pulsar scattering data and introduced a new quantity – the reduced scattering strength |$\tilde{\tau }$| to study the Galactic distribution of pulsar scattering in the Milky Way. We show that the current observations are dominated by two distinct pulsar populations: a local and an inner-Galactic one separated by |$\tilde{\tau }=10^{-5.1}$|  s cm6 pc−1. The stronger electron density fluctuations associated with the inner-Galactic population naturally explain the observed steepening of pulsar scattering time τ–dispersion measure relation. We measure an inner disc region with |$3\, {\rm kpc}\ \lt\ \rm r\ \lt\ 5.5\, {\rm kpc}$| from the Galactic centre to have a scattering scale height of about 0.28 kpc, supporting a correlation between interstellar radio scattering and structures associating with the ionized gas and stellar activities. 4U 1210−64 is a peculiar X-ray binary that was first discovered in 1978 by the Uhuru satellite. The analysis of the X-ray data revealed a 6.7-d orbital period and an additional long-term modulation that is manifested as low- and high-flux states. Based on the previous classification of the donor star from the analysis of its optical spectra, the system has been suggested to be a high-mass X-ray binary. We revisit the optical classification where, based on the spectra from the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), we conclude that the donor star is of spectral class A8 III–IV, making it a member of the rare intermediate-mass X-ray binaries. We perform radial velocity analysis using the SALT spectra where we consider circular and eccentric orbits. From the mass function derived and the mass constraints of the donor star, we demonstrate that a neutron star is favoured as the compact object in the binary system. We show, for the first time, the folded optical light curves, whose shape is interpreted to be due to a combination of ellipsoidal variations, irradiation of the donor star, and mutual eclipses of the star and accretion disc. Stellar radio emission can measure a star's magnetic field strength and structure, plasma density, and dynamics, and the stellar wind pressure impinging on exoplanet atmospheres. However, properly interpreting the radio data often requires temporal baselines that cover the rotation of the stars, orbits of their planets, and any longer-term stellar activity cycles. Here we present our monitoring campaign on the young, active M dwarf AU Microscopii with the Australia Telescope Compact Array between 1.1 and 3.1 GHz. With over 250 h of observations, these data represent the longest radio monitoring campaign on a single main-sequence star to date. We find that AU Mic produces a wide variety of radio emission, for which we introduce a phenomenological classification scheme predicated on the polarisation fraction and time-frequency structure of the emission. Such a classification scheme is applicable to radio emission from other radio-bright stars. The six types of radio emission detected on AU Mic can be broadly categorised into five distinct types of bursts, and broadband quiescent emission. We find that the radio bursts are highly circularly polarised and periodic with the rotation period of the star, implying that the emission is beamed. It is therefore most likely produced by the electron cyclotron maser instability. We present a model to show that the observed pattern of emission can be explained by emission from auroral rings on the magnetic poles. The total intensity of the broadband emission is stochastic, but we show that its circular polarisation fraction is also periodic with the rotation of the star. Such a periodicity in the polarised fraction of emission has not been observed on an M dwarf before. We present a qualitative model to describe the periodicity in the polarisation fraction of the broadband emission, using low-harmonic gyromagnetic emission. Using a simple qualitative model, we infer a magnetic obliquity of at least 20° from the observed variation in polarisation fraction. Finally, we show that the radio emission might be evolving on long timescales, hinting at a potential stellar magnetic activity cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
