We present a theoretical model embedding the essential physics of early galaxy formation (z = 5-12) based on the single premise that any galaxy can form stars with a maximal limiting efficiency that provides enough energy to expel all the remaining gas, quenching further star formation. This simple idea is implemented into a merger-tree based semi-analytical model that utilises two mass and redshift-independent parameters to capture the key physics of supernova feedback in ejecting gas from low-mass halos, and tracks the resulting impact on the subsequent growth of more massive systems via halo mergers and gas accretion. Our model shows that: (i) the smallest halos (halo mass $M_h \leq 10^{10} M_\odot$) build up their gas mass by accretion from the intergalactic medium; (ii) the bulk of the gas powering star formation in larger halos ($M_h \geq 10^{11.5} M_\odot$) is brought in by merging progenitors; (iii) the faint-end UV luminosity function slope evolves according to $��= -1.75 \log \,z -0.52$. In addition, (iv) the stellar mass-to-light ratio is well fit by the functional form $\log\, M_* = -0.38 M_{UV} -0.13\, z + 2.4$, which we use to build the evolving stellar mass function to compare to observations. We end with a census of the cosmic stellar mass density (SMD) across galaxies with UV magnitudes over the range $-23 \leq M_{UV} \leq -11$ spanning redshifts $5 < z < 12$: (v) while currently detected LBGs contain $\approx 50$% (10%) of the total SMD at $z=5$ (8), the JWST will detect up to 25% of the SMD at $z \simeq 9.5$., Accepted to MNRAS with minor changes

We explore the connection between black hole growth at the center of obscured quasars selected from the XMM-COSMOS survey and the physical properties of their host galaxies. We study a bolometric regime ( 8 x 10^45 erg/s) where several theoretical models invoke major galaxy mergers as the main fueling channel for black hole accretion. We confirm that obscured quasars mainly reside in massive galaxies (Mstar>10^10 Msun) and that the fraction of galaxies hosting such powerful quasars monotonically increases with the stellar mass. We stress the limitation of the use of rest-frame color-magnitude diagrams as a diagnostic tool for studying galaxy evolution and inferring the influence that AGN activity can have on such a process. We instead use the correlation between star-formation rate and stellar mass found for star-forming galaxies to discuss the physical properties of the hosts. We find that at z ~1, ~62% of Type-2 QSOs hosts are actively forming stars and that their rates are comparable to those measured for normal star-forming galaxies. The fraction of star-forming hosts increases with redshift: ~71% at z ~2, and 100% at z ~3. We also find that the the evolution from z ~1 to z ~3 of the specific star-formation rate of the Type-2 QSO hosts is in excellent agreement with that measured for star-forming galaxies. From the morphological analysis, we conclude that most of the objects are bulge-dominated galaxies, and that only a few of them exhibit signs of recent mergers or disks. We present the modeling of SINFONI integral field dynamics of 18 star forming galaxies at z ~ 2 from Halpha line emission. The galaxies are selected from the larger sample of the SINS survey, based on the prominence of ordered rotational motions with respect to more complex merger induced dynamics. The quality of the data allows us to carefully select systems with kinematics dominated by rotation, and to model the gas dynamics across the whole galaxy using suitable exponential disk models. We obtain a good correlation between the dynamical mass and the stellar mass, finding that large gas fractions Mgas~M*) are required to explain the difference between the two quantities. We use the derived stellar mass and maximum rotational velocity Vmax from the modeling to construct for the first time the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation at z ~ 2.2. The relation obtained shows a slope similar to what is observed at lower redshift, but we detect an evolution of the zero point. We find that at z ~ 2.2 there is an offset in log(M*) for a given rotational velocity of 0.41+-0.11 with respect to the local Universe. This result is consistent with the predictions of the latest N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of disk formation and evolution, which invoke gas accretion onto the forming disk in filaments and cooling flows. We present deep, high angular-resolution HST/NICMOS imaging in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S), focusing on a subset of 14 Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) at z ~ 2.5 galaxies that have been pre-selected to have J-K > 2.3. We find a clear trend between the rest-frame optical sizes of these sources and their luminosity-weighted stellar ages as inferred from their broad-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Galaxies whose SEDs are consistent with being dusty and actively star forming generally show extended morphologies in the NICMOS images (r_e >~ 2 kpc), while the 5 sources which are not vigorously forming stars are extremely compact (r_e, Comment: Accepted to The Astrophysical Journal, 8 pages, 5 figures

We have selected and analysed the properties of a sample of 2905 Ks2.5x10^11 Msun) local galaxies appear to be in place before redshift z ~1. Around 65-70% of the total assemble between redshifts z=1 and z=3 and most of them display extremely red colours, suggesting that plausible star formation in these very massive systems should mainly proceed in obscured, short-timescale bursts. The remaining fraction (up to ~ 20%) could be in place at even higher redshifts z=3-4, pushing the first epoch of formation of massive galaxies beyond the limits of current near-IR surveys., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 16 pages, 15 figures

We present estimated redshifts and derived properties for a sample of 1663 galaxies with Ks 1x10^11 Msun has been formed before redshift z ~ 4, and contains ~ 45% to 70% of the stellar mass density of the Universe at that redshift. Within our sample, the comoving number density of these massive systems is then essentially constant down to redshift z ~ 1.5, by which point most of them have apparently evolved into (I-Ks)-selected ERGs. The Large Early Galaxy Census (LEGA-C) is a Public Spectroscopic Survey of $\sim3200$ $K$-band selected galaxies at redshifts $z=0.6-1.0$ with stellar masses M_star > 1e10M_sun, conducted with VIMOS on ESO's Very Large Telescope. The survey is embedded in the COSMOS field ($R.A. = 10h00$; $Dec.=+2��$). The 20-hour long integrations produce high-$S/N$ continuum spectra that reveal ages, metallicities and velocity dispersions of the stellar populations. LEGA-C's unique combination of sample size and depth will enable us for the first time to map the stellar content at large look-back time, across galaxies of different types and star-formation activity. Observations started in December 2014 and are planned to be completed by mid 2018, with early data releases of the spectra and value-added products.
