We present the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) photometry and high-resolution spectra of the EL CVn-type systems, which consists of an A/F-type main-sequence (MS) star and a hotter low-mass helium white dwarf precursor (pre-He WD). In the spectral analysis, double-lined radial velocities (RVs) were obtained for the first time. From a simultaneous analysis of the TESS light and RV curves, the masses, radii, and temperatures of each component were determined. We applied multiple frequency analyses to the residual light curve after subtracting the binarity effects and detected independent frequencies. We found that the low-frequency region's frequencies resembled those of |$\delta$|  Sct-type stars, while the high-frequency region's frequencies (100–300 d |$^{-1}$|⁠) likely correspond to pre-He WD components. According to our research, we found that in nine systems, the primary star with higher mass showed pulsation characteristics similar to a |$\delta$| -Sct-type. In only three systems, the hotter secondary components consisted of a pre-He WD with high-frequency pulsations. We examine the purity of pre-He WD instability strip by studying several EL CVn-type systems. Additionally, we propose new boundaries for the empirical instability strips of pre-He WDs. In this study we present 18 |$-$| 24 GHz and high-angular-resolution (0.5 arcsec) radio wavelength Australia Telescope Compact Array follow-up observations towards a sample of 39 HC H  ii region candidates. These objects, taken from a sample hosting 6.7 GHz methanol masers, were chosen due to the compact and optically thick nature of their continuum emission. We have detected 27 compact radio sources and constructed their spectral energy distributions over the 5–24 GHz range to determine the young H  ii region's physical properties, i.e. diameter, electron density |${\it n}_{\mbox{e}}$|⁠ , emission measure, Lyman continuum flux |${\it N}_{\mbox{Ly}}$|⁠ , and turnover frequency |${\nu }_{\mbox{t}}$|⁠. The flux measurements are fitted for 20 objects assuming an ionization-bounded H  ii region with uniform density model. For the remaining seven objects that lack constraints spanning both their optically thick and thin regimes, we utilize relations from the literature to determine their physical properties. Comparing these determined parameters with those of known hypercompact (HC) and ultracompact (UC) H  ii regions, we have identified 13 HC H  ii regions, six intermediate objects that fall between HC H  ii and UC H  ii regions, six UC H  ii regions and one radio jet candidate which increases the known population of HC H  ii regions by |$\sim$| 50 per cent. All the young and compact H  ii regions are embedded in dusty and dense clumps and |$\sim$| 80 per cent of the HC H  ii regions identified in this work are associated with various maser species (CH |$_3$| OH, H |$_2$| O, and OH). In recent years, there has been a push to understand how chemical composition affects the magnetic activity levels of main sequence low-mass stars. Results indicate that more metal-rich stars are more magnetically active for a given stellar mass and rotation period. This metallicity dependence has implications for how the rotation periods and activity levels of low-mass stars evolve over their lifetimes. Numerical modelling suggests that at late ages more metal-rich stars should be rotating more slowly and be more magnetically active. In this work, we study the rotation and activity evolution of low-mass stars using a sample of Kepler field stars. We use the gyro-kinematic age dating technique to estimate ages for our sample and use the photometric activity index as our proxy for magnetic activity. We find clear evidence that, at late ages, more metal-rich stars have spun down to slower rotation in agreement with the theoretical modelling. Nitrogen is produced by CNO-cycling in massive stars, and can be ejected in significant amounts in supernova explosions. While in H-rich SNe, its [N  ii ] 6548, 6583 emission becomes obscured by strong H |$\alpha$|⁠ , in explosions of He stars, this nitrogen emission becomes more visible. We here explore the formation of this line, using the sumo code to compute spectra for a grid of 1D models with parametrized mixing informed from new 2D simulations. Because the mass fraction of nitrogen in the ejecta decreases with larger He-core masses, as more of the He/N zone gets processed by shell helium burning and is lost to winds, the [N  ii ] luminosity relative to the overall optical flux probes the He-core mass. By comparing to large samples of data, we find that low-mass He cores (⁠|$M_{\rm preSN}\lesssim \ 3\ \mathrm{ M}_\odot$|⁠) are exclusively associated with Type IIb SNe, with the exception of Type Ib SN 2007Y. Seeing no strong nitrogen emission in other Type Ib SNe, the implication is either an origin from low-mass stars with the He/N layer (but not the He/C) layer peeled away, or from higher mass He cores. We also see no clear nitrogen emission in Type Ic SNe. We discuss the diagnostic potential of this new line metric, and also dependencies on mass-loss rate and metallicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stars in the Galactic disk are born on cold, nearly circular orbits with small vertical excursions. After their birth, their orbits evolve, driven by small- or large-scale perturbations in the Galactic disk's gravitational potential. Here, we study the vertical motions of young stars over their first few orbital periods, using a sample of OBA stars from Gaia E/DR3, which includes radial velocities and ages τ from LAMOST. We construct a parametric model for the time evolution of the stellar orbits' mean vertical actions J z as a function of Galactocentric radius, R GC. Accounting for data uncertainties, we use Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis in annuli of Galactocentric radius (R GC) to constrain the model parameters. Our best-fit model shows a remarkably linear increase of vertical actions with age across all Galactocentric radii examined. Orbital heating by random scattering could offer a straightforward interpretation for this trend. However, various other dynamical aspects of the Galactic disk, such as stars being born in a warped disk, might offer alternative explanations that could be tested in the future. The Cepheid AW Per is a component in a multiple system with a long-period orbit. The radial velocities of Griffin cover the 38 yr orbit well. An extensive program of interferometry with the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy array is reported here, from which the long-period orbit is determined. In addition, a Hubble Space Telescope high-resolution spectrum in the ultraviolet demonstrates that the companion is itself a binary with nearly equal-mass components. These data combined with a distance from Gaia provide a mass of the Cepheid (primary) of M 1 = 6.79 ± 0.85 M ⊙. The combined mass of the secondary is M S = 8.79 ± 0.50 M ⊙. The interaction of supernova ejecta with a surrounding circumstellar medium (CSM) generates a strong shock, which can convert ejecta kinetic energy into observable radiation. Given the diversity of potential CSM structures (arising from diverse mass-loss processes such as late-stage stellar outbursts, binary interaction, and winds), the resulting transients can display a wide range of light-curve morphologies. We provide a framework for classifying the transients arising from interaction with a spherical CSM shell. The light curves are decomposed into five consecutive phases, starting from the onset of interaction and extending through shock breakout and subsequent shock cooling. The relative prominence of each phase in the light curve is determined by two dimensionless quantities representing the CSM-to-ejecta mass ratio η, and the breakout parameter ξ. These two parameters define four light-curve morphology classes, where each class is characterized by the location of the shock breakout and the degree of deceleration as the shock sweeps up the CSM. We compile analytic scaling relations connecting the luminosity and duration of each light-curve phase to the physical parameters. We then run a grid of radiation hydrodynamics simulations for a wide range of ejecta and CSM parameters to numerically explore the landscape of interaction light curves, and to calibrate and confirm the analytic scalings. We connect our theoretical framework to several case studies of observed transients, highlighting the relevance in explaining slow-rising and superluminous supernovae, fast blue optical transients, and double-peaked light curves. During Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) in the first 15 minutes of the Universe, some 7Li was created along with isotopes of H and He. The determination of that primordial value of Li can help constrain the conditions at that time. The oldest stars with known ages can be found in globular clusters which have well-determined ages through stellar evolution models. High-resolution spectra of Li have been obtained with the Keck I Telescope and HIRES in several unevolved stars in the clusters M13 and M71 with V magnitudes of 17.6–17.9. Abundances of Li have been determined with spectrum synthesis techniques and show a range of a factor of 4. We attribute that spread to differences in initial angular momentum resulting in different amounts of spin-down, related mixing, and destruction of Li. Our results are compared with similar results for main-sequence and turnoff stars in other globular clusters. The range in age of these clusters is 11.2–14.2 Gyr for an age span of 3 Gyr. These clusters range in [Fe/H] from −0.75 to −2.24 corresponding to a factor of 30 in metallicity. The maximum in the Li abundance for these unevolved stars in all eight clusters is the same corresponding to Li/H = 3.16 × 10−10, while the predicted Li abundance, based on the deuterium abundance and the BBN predictions, is 5.24 × 10−10. Core-collapse supernovae are explosions of massive stars at the end of their evolution. They are responsible for metal production and for halting star formation, having a significant impact on galaxy evolution. The details of these processes depend on the nature of supernova progenitors, but it is unclear if Type Ic supernovae (without hydrogen or helium lines in their spectra) originate from core-collapses of very massive stars (>30 M⊙) or from less massive stars in binary systems. Here we show that Type II (with hydrogen lines) and Ic supernovae are located in environments with similar molecular gas densities, therefore their progenitors have comparable lifetimes and initial masses. This supports a binary interaction for most Type Ic supernova progenitors, which explains the lack of hydrogen and helium lines. This finding can be implemented in sub-grid prescriptions in numerical cosmological simulations to improve the feedback and chemical mixing. Type Ic supernovae (SNe) originate either from the core collapse of very massive stars or from less massive stars in binary systems. Ultramassive white dwarfs with masses |$M\gtrsim 1.1\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$| probe extreme physics near the Chandrasekhar limit. Despite the rapid increase in observations, it is still unclear how many harbour carbon–oxygen (CO) versus oxygen–neon (ONe) cores. The origin of these white dwarfs and their strong magnetic fields – single stellar evolution or a stellar merger – is another open question. The steep mass–radius relation of the relativistic ultramassive white dwarfs shortens their crystallization time |$t_{\rm cryst}$|⁠ , such that the recently proposed crystallization dynamo mechanism may present an alternative to mergers in explaining the early appearance of magnetism in the observed population. However, the magnetic diffusion time from the convective dynamo to the white dwarf's surface delays the magnetic field's breakout time |$t_{\rm break}\gt t_{\rm cryst}$|⁠. We compute |$t_{\rm break}(M)$| for CO and ONe ultramassive white dwarfs and compare it to the local 40 pc volume-limited sample. We find that the breakout time from CO cores is too long to account for the observations. ONe crystallization dynamos remain a viable option, but their surrounding non-convective envelopes comprise only a few per cent of the total mass, such that |$t_{\rm break}$| is highly sensitive to the details of stellar evolution. The recent detection of ethanolamine (EtA, HOCH |$_2$| CH |$_2$| NH |$_2$|⁠), a key component of phospholipids, i.e. the building blocks of cell membranes, in the interstellar medium is in line with an exogenous origin of life-relevant molecules. However, the stability and survivability of EtA molecules under inter/circumstellar and Solar System conditions have yet to be demonstrated. Starting from the assumption that EtA mainly forms on interstellar ice grains, we have systematically exposed EtA, pure and mixed with amorphous water (H |$_2$| O) ice, to electron, ion, and thermal processing, representing 'energetic' mechanisms that are known to induce physicochemical changes within the ice material under controlled laboratory conditions. Using infrared (IR) spectroscopy, we have found that heating of pure EtA ice causes a phase change from amorphous to crystalline at 180 K, and further temperature increase of the ice results in sublimation-induced losses until full desorption occurs at about 225 K. IR and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectra of EtA-containing ices deposited and irradiated at 20 K with 1 keV electrons as well as IR spectra of H |$_2$| O:EtA mixed ice obtained after 1 MeV He |$^+$| ion irradiation have been collected at different doses. The main radiolysis products, including H |$_2$| O, CO, CO |$_2$|⁠ , NH |$_3$|⁠ , and CH |$_3$| OH, have been identified and their formation pathways are discussed. The measured column density of EtA is demonstrated to undergo exponential decay upon electron and ion bombardment. The half-life doses for electron and He |$^+$| ion irradiation of pure EtA and H |$_2$| O:EtA mixed ice are derived to range between |$10.8\!-\!26.3$|  eV/16u. Extrapolating these results to space conditions, we conclude that EtA mixed in H |$_2$| O ice is more stable than in pure form and it should survive throughout the star and planet formation process. Reionization is thought to be driven by faint star-forming galaxies, but characterizing this population has long remained very challenging. Here, we utilize deep nine-band JADES (JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey)/NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) imaging to study the star-forming and ionizing properties of 756 |$z\sim 6-9$| galaxies, including hundreds of very ultraviolet (UV)-faint objects (⁠|$M_\mathrm{UV}\gt -18$|⁠). The faintest (⁠|$m\sim 30$|⁠) galaxies in our sample typically have stellar masses of |$M_\ast \sim (1-3)\times 10^7\ \mathrm{ M}_\odot$| and young light-weighted ages (⁠|$\sim$| 50 Myr), though some show strong Balmer breaks implying much older ages (⁠|$\sim$| 500 Myr). We find no evidence for extremely massive galaxies (⁠|$\gt 3\times 10^{10}\ \mathrm{ M}_\odot$|⁠) in our sample. We infer a strong (factor |$\gt $| 2) decline in the typical [O  iii ] |$+$| H  |$\beta$| equivalent widths (EWs) towards very faint |$z\sim 6-9$| galaxies, yet a weak UV luminosity dependence on the H  |$\alpha$| EWs at |$z\sim 6$|⁠. We demonstrate that these EW trends can be explained if fainter galaxies have systematically lower metallicities as well as more recently declining star formation histories relative to the most UV-luminous galaxies. Our data provide evidence that the brightest galaxies are frequently experiencing a recent strong upturn in star formation rate. We also discuss how the EW trends may be influenced by a strong correlation between |$M_\mathrm{UV}$| and Lyman continuum escape fraction. This alternative explanation has dramatically different implications for the contribution of galaxies along the luminosity function to cosmic reionization. Finally, we quantify the photometric overdensities around two |$z\,\gt\,7$| strong Ly  |$\alpha$| emitters. One Ly  |$\alpha$| emitter lies close to a strong photometric overdensity, while the other shows no significant nearby overdensity, perhaps implying that not all strong |$z\,\gt\, 7$| Ly  |$\alpha$| emitters reside in large ionized bubbles. Strong metallicity-dependent winds dominate the evolution of core He-burning, classical Wolf–Rayet (cWR) stars, which eject both H and He-fusion products such as |$^{14}$| N, |$^{12}$| C, |$^{16}$| O, |$^{19}$| F, |$^{22}$| Ne, and |$^{23}$| Na during their evolution. The chemical enrichment from cWRs can be significant. cWR stars are also key sources for neutron production relevant for the weak s-process. We calculate stellar models of cWRs at solar metallicity for a range of initial Helium star masses (12–50  |$\rm M_{\odot }$|⁠), adopting recent hydrodynamical wind rates. Stellar wind yields are provided for the entire post-main sequence evolution until core O-exhaustion. While literature has previously considered cWRs as a viable source of the radioisotope |$^{26}$| Al, we confirm that negligible |$^{26}$| Al is ejected by cWRs since it has decayed to |$^{26}$| Mg or proton-captured to |$^{27}$| Al. However, in Paper I, we showed that very massive stars eject substantial quantities of |$^{26}$| Al, among other elements including N, Ne, and Na, already from the zero-age-main-sequence. Here, we examine the production of |$^{19}$| F and find that even with lower mass-loss rates than previous studies, our cWR models still eject substantial amounts of |$^{19}$| F. We provide central neutron densities (N |$_{n}$|⁠) of a 30  |$\rm M_{\odot }$| cWR compared with a 32  |$\rm M_{\odot }$| post-VMS WR and confirm that during core He-burning, cWRs produce a significant number of neutrons for the weak s-process via the |$^{22}$| Ne(⁠|$\alpha$|⁠ ,n) |$^{25}$| Mg reaction. Finally, we compare our cWR models with observed [Ne/He], [C/He], and [O/He] ratios of Galactic WC and WO stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One-dimensional (1D) stellar evolution models are widely used across various astrophysical fields, however they are still dominated by important uncertainties that deeply affect their predictive power. Among those, the merging of independent convective regions is a poorly understood phenomenon predicted by some 1D models but whose occurrence and impact in real stars remain very uncertain. Being an intrinsically multi-D phenomenon, it is challenging to predict the exact behaviour of shell mergers with 1D models. In this work, we conduct a detailed investigation of a multiple shell merging event in a 20 M |$_\odot$| star using 3D hydrodynamic simulations. Making use of the active tracers for composition and the nuclear network included in the 3D model, we study the merging not only from a dynamical standpoint but also considering its nucleosynthesis and energy generation. Our simulations confirm the occurrence of the merging also in 3D, but reveal significant differences from the 1D case. Specifically, we identify entrainment and the erosion of stable regions as the main mechanisms that drive the merging, we predict much faster convective velocities compared to the mixing-length theory velocities, and observe multiple burning phases within the same merged shell, with important effects for the chemical composition of the star, which presents a strongly asymmetric (dipolar) distribution. We expect that these differences will have important effects on the final structure of massive stars and thus their final collapse dynamics and possible supernova explosion, subsequently affecting the resulting nucleosynthesis and remnant. The thermal evolution of isolated neutron stars is a key element in unravelling their internal structure and composition and establishing evolutionary connections among different observational subclasses. Previous studies have predominantly focused on one-dimensional or axisymmetric two-dimensional models. In this study, we present the thermal evolution component of the novel three-dimensional magnetothermal code MATINS (MAgneto-Thermal evolution of Isolated Neutron Star). MATINS employs a finite volume scheme and integrates a realistic background structure, along with state-of-the-art microphysical calculations for the conductivities, neutrino emissivities, heat capacity, and superfluid gap models. This paper outlines the methodology employed to solve the thermal evolution equations in MATINS , along with the microphysical implementation that is essential for the thermal component. We test the accuracy of the code and present simulations with non-evolving magnetic fields of different configurations (all with electrical currents confined to the crust and a magnetic field that does not thread the core), to produce temperature maps of the neutron star surface. Additionally, for a specific magnetic field configuration, we show one fully coupled evolution of magnetic field and temperature. Subsequently, we use a ray-tracing code to link the neutron star surface temperature maps obtained by MATINS with the phase-resolved spectra and pulsed profiles that would be detected by distant observers. This study, together with our previous article focused on the magnetic formalism, presents in detail the most advanced evolutionary code for isolated neutron stars, with the aim of comparison with their timing properties, thermal luminosities and the associated X-ray light curves. The shape of the low-mass (faint) end of the galaxy stellar mass function (SMF) or ultraviolet luminosity function (UVLF) at |$z \gtrsim 6$| is an open question for understanding which galaxies primarily drove cosmic reionization. Resolved photometry of Local Group low-mass galaxies allows us to reconstruct their star formation histories, stellar masses, and UV luminosities at early times, and this fossil record provides a powerful 'near-far' technique for studying the reionization-era SMF/UVLF, probing orders of magnitude lower in mass than direct HST / JWST observations. Using 882 low-mass (⁠|$M_{\rm star}\lesssim 10^{9}\, \rm {M_\odot }$|⁠) galaxies across 11 Milky Way (MW)- and Local Group-analogue environments from the FIRE-2 cosmological baryonic zoom-in simulations, we characterize their progenitors at |$z=6\!-\!9$|⁠ , the mergers/disruption of those progenitors over time, and how well their present-day fossil record traces the high-redshift SMF. A present-day galaxy with |$M_{\rm star}\sim 10^5\, \rm {M_\odot }$| (⁠|$\sim 10^9\, \rm {M_\odot }$|⁠) had |$\approx 1$| (⁠|$\approx 30$|⁠) progenitors at |$z\approx 7$|⁠ , and its main progenitor comprised |$\approx 100~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| (⁠|$\approx 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) of the total stellar mass of all its progenitors at |$z\approx 7$|⁠. We show that although only |$\sim 15~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the early population of low-mass galaxies survives to present day, the fossil record of surviving Local Group galaxies accurately traces the low-mass slope of the SMF at |$z \sim 6 \!-\! 9$|⁠. We find no obvious mass dependence to the mergers and accretion, and show that applying this reconstruction technique to just low-mass galaxies at |$z = 0$| and not the MW/M31 hosts correctly recovers the slope of the SMF down to |$M_{\rm star} \sim 10^{4.5}\, \rm {{\rm M}_{\odot }}$| at |$z \gtrsim 6$|⁠. How massive stars end their lives depends on the core mass, core angular momentum, and hydrogen envelopes at death. However, these key physical facets of stellar evolution can be severely affected by binary interactions. In turn, the effectiveness of binary interactions itself varies greatly depending on the initial conditions of the binaries, making the situation much more complex. We investigate systematically how binary interactions influence core–collapse progenitors and their fates. Binary evolution simulations are performed to survey the parameter space of supernova progenitors in solar metallicity binary systems and to delineate major evolutionary paths. We first study fixed binary mass ratios (⁠|$q=M_2/M_1$| = 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9) to elucidate the impacts of initial mass and initial separation on the outcomes, treating separately Type Ibc supernova, Type II supernova, accretion-induced collapse (AIC), rapidly rotating supernova (Ibc-R), black hole formation, and long gamma ray burst (long GRB). We then conduct 12 binary population synthesis model calculations, varying the initial condition distributions and binary evolution parameters, to estimate various supernova fractions. We obtain a Milky Way supernova rate |$R_{\rm SN} = (1.78$| – |$2.47) \times 10^{-2} \, {\rm yr}^{-1}$| which is consistent with observations. We find the rates of AIC, Ibc-R, and long GRB to be |$\sim 1/100$| the rate of regular supernovae. Our estimated long GRB rates are higher than the observed long GRB rate and close to the low luminosity GRB rate, although care must be taken considering our models are computed with solar metallicity. Understanding the explosion mechanism and hydrodynamic evolution of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) is a long-standing quest in astronomy. The asymmetries caused by the explosion are encoded into the line profiles which appear in the nebular phase of the SN evolution – with particularly clean imprints in He star explosions. Here, we carry out nine different supernova simulations of He-core progenitors, exploding them in 3D with parametrically varied neutrino luminosities using the prometheus-hotb code, hydrodynamically evolving the models to the homologous phase. We then compute nebular phase spectra with the 3D Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium spectral synthesis code extrass (EXplosive TRAnsient Spectral Simulator). We study how line widths and shifts depend on progenitor mass, explosion energy, and viewing angle. We compare the predicted line profile properties against a large set of Type Ib observations, and discuss the degree to which current neutrino-driven explosions can match observationally inferred asymmetries. With self-consistent 3D modelling – circumventing the difficulties of representing |$^{56}$| Ni mixing and clumping accurately in 1D models – we find that neither low-mass He cores exploding with high energies nor high-mass cores exploding with low energies contribute to the Type Ib SN population. Models which have line profile widths in agreement with this population give sufficiently large centroid shifts for calcium emission lines. Calcium is more strongly affected by explosion asymmetries connected to the neutron star kicks than oxygen and magnesium. Lastly, we turn to the near-infrared spectra from our models to investigate the potential of using this regime to look for the presence of He in the nebular phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are a kind of radio pulsars with short spin periods, playing a key role in many aspects of stellar astrophysics. In recent years, some more MSPs with wide orbits (⁠|$\gt 30\, \rm d$|⁠) have been discovered, but their origin is still highly unclear. In this work, according to an adiabatic power-law assumption for the mass-transfer process, we carried out a large number of complete binary evolution computations for the formation of MSPs with wide orbits through the iron core-collapse supernova (CCSN) channel, in which a neutron star originating from a CCSN accretes matter from a red-giant star and spun up to millisecond periods. We found that this channel can form the observed MSPs with wide orbits in the range of |$30\!-\!1200\, {\rm d}$|⁠ , in which the white dwarf (WD) companions have masses in the range of |$0.28\!-\!0.55\, \rm M_{\odot }$|⁠. We also found that almost all the observed MSPs can be reproduced by this channel in the WD companion mass versus orbital period diagram. We estimate that the Galactic numbers of the resulting MSPs from the CCSN channel are in the range of |$\sim 4.8\!-\!8.5\times 10^{5}$|⁠. We study the wide-binary eccentricity (e) distribution in young star clusters and the role of turbulence in setting the form of the e distribution using magnetohydrodynamical simulations of star cluster formation. The simulations incorporate gravity, turbulence, magnetic fields, protostellar heating, and jets/outflows. We find that (1) simulations that employ purely compressive turbulence driving produce binaries with a superthermal e distribution [ |$\alpha \gt 1$| in |$p(e) \propto e^\alpha$| ], while simulations with purely solenoidal driving or natural mixture of driving modes produce subthermal/thermal distributions (⁠|$\alpha \le$| 1), (2) the e distribution over the full range of binary separations in our simulations is set at the early stages of the star cluster formation process, (3) while binaries (separation of |$r_{\mathrm{pair}} \le 1000\, \mathrm{AU}$|⁠) have subthermal to thermal e distributions (⁠|$\alpha \sim 0.8$|⁠), wide binaries (⁠|$r_{\mathrm{pair}} \gt 1000\, \mathrm{AU}$|⁠) have a superthermal distribution (⁠|$\alpha \sim 1.8$|⁠), and (4) low-mass binary systems (system masses of |$M_{\mathrm{sys}} \le 0.8\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠) have a highly superthermal distribution (⁠|$\alpha \sim 2.4$|⁠), whereas high-mass systems (⁠|$M_{\mathrm{sys}} \gt 0.8\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠) exhibit a subthermal/thermal distribution (⁠|$\alpha \sim 0.8$|⁠). The binary eccentricity distribution is often modelled as a thermal distribution. However, our results suggest that the e distribution depends on the range of separation of the sampled binaries, which agrees with the findings from recent Gaia observations. We conclude that the dependence of the e distribution on the binary separation and mass is linked to the binary formation mechanism governed by the turbulent properties of the parent cloud. We present the overview and first results from the North-PHASE Legacy Survey, which follows six young clusters for five years, using the 2 deg |$^2$| FoV of the JAST80 telescope from the Javalambre Observatory (Spain). North-PHASE investigates stellar variability on time-scales from days to years for thousands of young stars distributed over entire clusters. This allows us to find new YSO, characterize accretion, and study inner disc evolution within the cluster context. Each region (Tr 37, Cep OB3, IC 5070, IC 348, NGC 2264, and NGC 1333) is observed in six filters (SDSS griz, u band, and J0660, which covers H |$\alpha$|⁠), detecting cluster members as well as field variable stars. Tr 37 is used to prove feasibility and optimize the variability analysis techniques. In Tr 37, variability reveals 50 new YSO, most of them proper motion outliers. North-PHASE independently confirms the youth of astrometric members, efficiently distinguishes accreting and non-accreting stars, reveals the extent of the cluster populations along Tr37/IC 1396 bright rims, and detects variability resulting from rotation, dips, and irregular bursts. The proper motion outliers unveil a more complex star formation history than inferred from Gaia alone, and variability highlights previously hidden proper motion deviations in the surrounding clouds. We also find that non-YSO variables identified by North-PHASE cover a different variability parameter space and include long-period variables, eclipsing binaries, RR Lyr, and |$\delta$| Scuti stars. The origin of extended main-sequence turn-offs (eMSTO) in star clusters younger than 2 Gyr still challenges our current understanding of stellar evolution. Exploiting data from Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), we investigate eMSTOs in a large sample of 32 Galactic open clusters younger than 2.4 Gyr. We first validate Gaia rotational velocities from radial velocity spectrometer spectra by comparing them with literature values and assessing their correlation with magnetic activity measurements from LAMOST spectra. We detect a general positive correlation between turn-off colour and projected stellar rotation, with slow-rotating stars predominantly found on the bluer side of the turn-off. Comparing our observations with theoretical models, we find that the eMSTO morphology is well reproduced by a single population formed with a high rotation rate, and observed with rotation axis inclination ranging between 0° (pole-on) and 90° (edge-on). This contrasts with observations of Magellanic Cloud clusters, where a population of non-rotating stars appears to be ubiquitous in clusters younger than 700 Myr. However, we note that our interpretation, while successfully explaining the overall eMSTO morphology, cannot fully explain the observed projected rotational velocities. Additionally, two young clusters, NGC 3532 and NGC 2287, exhibit moderate evidence of a split-main sequence in colour and rotation, suggesting a possible small spread in the initial rotation rate. Finally, we advise caution in determining the ages of young clusters from non-rotating isochrones, as neglecting the effects of stellar rotation can impact the isochrone dating by up to factors of 5–20 per cent. First stars play crucial roles in the development of the Universe, influencing events like cosmic reionization and the chemcal enrichment of the intergalactic medium. While first stars are conventionally thought to form at around |$z \sim 20$| –30 in the standard |$\Lambda$| cold dark matter (⁠|$\Lambda$| CDM) cosmology, observational constraints on small-scale (⁠|$\\lt $| Mpc) density fluctuations remain limited, possibly differing significantly from the scale-invariant fluctuations assumed in the |$\Lambda $| CDM model. Should this be the case, the formation of first stars could occur much earlier than typically predicted. In this study, we investigate the formation process of first stars in the extremely early epochs of |$z \gtrsim 100$| in the post-recombination Universe. At such early times, the effects of the warm cosmic microwave background (CMB) become significant. We calculate the collapse of primordial star-forming clouds using a one-zone thermo-chemical model that accounts for CMB influences on radiative heating, Compton cooling, and photodissociation reactions. We found that the impact of the CMB on the evolution is limited at |$z \lesssim 100 $|⁠ , with the temperature evolution closely resembling the conventional model. However, within the range |$100 \lesssim z \lesssim 400$|⁠ , the formation of H |$_{2}$| via the H |$^{-}$| channel is impeded by H |$^{-}$| photo-detachment induced by the CMB, leading to higher temperatures compared to standard thermal evolution. Consequently, first stars with masses exceeding |$1000\, {M}_{\odot }$| can emerge at |$z \gtrsim 100$|⁠. Furthermore, at |$z \gtrsim 500$|⁠ , the temperature evolution becomes nearly isothermal at several thousand Kelvin solely due to atomic cooling, as H |$_{2}$| formation is entirely suppressed, including the less-efficient H |$_2^{+}$| channel, which is blocked by H |$_2^{+}$| photodissociation. In such cases, supermassive stars with masses around |$\sim 10^{5}\, {M}_{\odot }$| are expected to form solely via atomic cooling. Internal gravity waves are likely to cause mixing in stellar interiors. Studies show that the mixing by these waves changes drastically across age and mass. Here, we study the effect of rotation on this wave mixing by considering a 7 M ⊙ model at zero-age main sequence and mid-main sequence. We compare the mixing profiles at a range of rotation rates (1 × 10−5, 2 × 10−5, 3 × 10−5, 4 × 10−5, and 1 × 10−4 rad s−1) and observe that the mixing decreases with decreasing Rossby number. This can be attributed to the effect of rotation on convection, which influences the amplitude with which the waves are excited near the convective–radiative interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We review the evolution of our understanding of the planetary nebulae phenomenon and their place in the scheme of stellar evolution. The historical steps leading to our current understanding of central star evolution and nebular formation are discussed. Recent optical imaging, X-ray, ultraviolet, infrared, millimeter wave, and radio observations have led to a much more complex picture of the structure of planetary nebulae. The optically bright regions have multiple shell structures (rims, shells, crowns, and haloes), which can be understood within the interacting winds framework. However, the physical mechanism responsible for bipolar and multipolar structures that emerged during the proto-planetary nebulae phase is yet to be identified. Our morphological classifications of planetary nebulae are hampered by the effects of sensitivity, orientation, and field-of-view coverage, and the fraction of bipolar or multipolar nebulae may be much higher than commonly assumed. The optically bright bipolar lobes may represent low-density, ionization-bounded cavities carved out of a neutral envelope by collimated fast winds. Planetary nebulae are sites of active synthesis of complex organic compounds, suggesting that planetary nebulae play a major role in the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy. We conduct three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, and show that when a secondary star launches jets while interacting with a primary |$0.88~\mathrm{ M}_{\rm \odot }$| giant star in a close orbit, the system can avoid entering the common envelope evolution (CEE). Instead of a fast in-spiral, the companion slowly enters the envelope as the jets facilitate the unbinding of the giant star envelope outside the companion orbit, in what is termed the grazing envelope evolution (GEE). The assumptions are that the secondary main-sequence star accretes mass via an accretion disc, and that the accretion disc launches the jets. We perform two sets of simulations with and without jets for different companion masses at the range of 0.1–0.9 M |$_{\odot }$|⁠ , maintaining a constant jet power in the former case of |$1.5\times 10^{38}~{\rm ergs~s^{-1}}$|⁠. We examine which of the simulated systems undergo a GEE rather than a CEE and how efficiently the jets unbind the envelope. The results indicate that systems with companion masses at the range of 0.1–0.3 M |$_{\odot }$| are more likely to result in a phase of GEE lasting 1–3 yr. With the smallest companion, a 0.1 solar mass star, the jets unbind 65 per cent of the envelope mass, while almost none of the envelope is unbound if jets are not present. The results of the simulations show that the GEE can serve as an alternative to the CEE, in forming short-period binaries that have compact objects and an ejected envelope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Origin of LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave events may involve production of binaries with relativistic components in dense stellar systems – globular or nuclear star clusters – and their subsequent evolution towards merger. Orbital parameters of these binaries (the inner orbit) and their motion inside the cluster (the outer orbit) evolve due to both external agents – random encounters with cluster stars and cluster tides due to the smooth cluster potential – and the internal ones – various sources of dissipation and precession within the binary. We present a numerical framework – binary evolution in stellar clusters (besc) – that follows the evolution of the binary inner and outer orbits accounting for all these effects simultaneously, enabling efficient Monte Carlo studies. The secular effect of cluster tides is computed in the singly averaged approximation, without averaging over the outer binary orbit. As to stellar encounters, we include the effects of both close and distant flybys on the inner and outer orbits of the binary, respectively. Also, given our focus on the LIGO/Virgo sources, we include the general relativistic precession (which suppresses cluster tides at high eccentricities) and the gravitational wave emission (shrinking the binary orbit). We use besc to illustrate a number of characteristic binary evolutionary outcomes and discuss relative contributions of different physical processes. In particular, we find that stellar encounters often dominate over the cluster tides in the evolution of compact binaries. besc can also be used to study other objects in clusters, e.g. blue stragglers, hot Jupiters, X-ray binaries, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In our Galactic Centre, about |$10\,000$| to |$100\,000$| stars are estimated to have survived tidal disruption events, resulting in partially disrupted remnants. These events occur when a supermassive black hole (SMBH) tidally interacts with a star, but not enough to completely disrupt the star. We use the 1D stellar evolution code Kepler and the 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics code Phantom to model the tidal disruption of 1, 3, and |$10\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| stars at zero-age main sequence (ZAMS), middle-age main sequence (MAMS), and terminal-age main sequence (TAMS). We map the disruption remnants into Kepler in order to understand their post-distribution evolution. We find distinct characteristics in the remnants, including increased radius, rapid core rotation, and differential rotation in the envelope. The remnants undergo composition mixing that affects their stellar evolution. Although the remnants formed by disruption of ZAMS models evolve similarly to unperturbed models of the same mass, for MAMS and TAMS stars, the remnants have higher luminosity and effective temperature. Potential observational signatures include peculiarities in nitrogen and carbon abundances, higher luminosity, rapid rotation, faster evolution, and unique tracks in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. It is generally hard to put robust constraints on progenitor masses of supernovae and supernova remnants (SNRs) observationally, while they offer tantalizing clues to understanding explosion mechanisms and mass distribution. Our recent study suggests that "shell merger," which is theoretically expected for stellar evolution, can appreciably affect the final yields of intermediate-mass elements (IMEs; such as Ne, Mg, and Si). In light of this, here we report the results of the X-ray spectral analysis of a Galactic SNR G359.0−0.9, whose abundance pattern may possibly be anomalous according to a previous study. Our spectroscopy using all the available data taken with XMM-Newton reveals that this remnant is classified as a Mg-rich SNR because of its high Mg-to-Ne ratio ( Z Mg / Z Ne = 1.90 − 0.19 + 0.27 ; mass ratio 0.66 − 0.07 + 0.09 ) and conclude that the result cannot be explained without the shell merger. By comparing the observation with theoretical calculations, we prefer the so-called Ne-burning shell intrusion and in this case, the progenitor mass M ZAMS is likely <15 M ⊙. We confirm the result also with our new molecular-line observations with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope: G359.0−0.9 is located in the Scutum–Centaurus arm (2.66–2.94 kpc) and in this case, the resultant total ejecta mass ∼6.8 M ⊙ is indeed consistent with the above estimate. Our method using mass ratios of IMEs presented in this paper will become useful to distinguish the type of shell merger, the Ne-burning shell intrusion, and the O-burning shell merger, for future SNR studies. With space missions such as Kepler, TESS, and Gaia, we have a wealth of data on pulsating white dwarfs that can be leveraged in white dwarf asteroseismology. We address the question of the proportion of white dwarfs with thin hydrogen layers versus those with thick hydrogen layers. We also provide a mass–radius relation for carbon–oxygen-core, hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs. Such a relationship can be used in conjunction with magnitudes and distance measurements to constrain the mass and effective temperature of the white dwarfs. We select nine hydrogen-atmosphere pulsating white dwarfs for their rich pulsation spectra. From such pulsation spectra, we can derive the asymptotic period spacing, which in turn allows us to determine the thickness of the hydrogen and helium envelope of the models, without having to perform period-by-period fitting. We find that the majority of the white dwarfs have thicker hydrogen layers and we determine an upper limit of M r = 1–10−2.2 for the location of the base of the helium layer, in accordance with stellar evolution models. We confirm a finding from earlier studies that used a mass–radius relation and Gaia data to determine the effective temperatures of white dwarfs. The Gaia data systematically point to white dwarfs of lower effective temperature than indicated by the spectroscopy. Harmonics are a ubiquitous feature across various pulsating stars. They are traditionally viewed as mere replicas of the independent primary pulsation modes and have thus been excluded from asteroseismological models. Recent research, however, has uncovered a significant discrepancy: in high-amplitude δ Scuti (HADS) stars, harmonics exhibit uncorrelated variations in amplitude and frequency relative to their independent primary pulsation modes. The nature of these disharmonized harmonics is a question of critical importance. In our study we analysed five triple-mode HADS stars observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and discovered some pervasive patterns of disharmonized harmonics in both the fundamental (f0) and first overtone (f1) pulsation modes. Intriguingly, through an in-depth frequency interaction analysis of V1393 Cen, we identified 2f1 as an independent pulsation mode, distinct from f1, and identified it as the progenitor of the frequency variations observed in 3f1, 4f1, 5f1, and 6f1. Similar behaviour can be found in DO CMi and GSC 06047-00749, in which 2f1 and 3f1 are the independent pulsation modes, respectively. Notably, we found an interesting pattern when decomposing the harmonics that might suggest a generation process of harmonics. These findings serve as a new window on the research of harmonics, which remains a hidden corner of contemporary asteroseismology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report an observed accretion rate of Ṁ1 = (3.86 ± 0.60) × 10−11M⊙ yr−1 for the white dwarf in the short-period, intermediate polar EX Hya. This result is based upon the accretion-induced 4π-averaged energy flux from 2.45 μm to 100 keV and the corresponding luminosity at the Gaia distance of 56.77 pc. Our result is in perfect agreement with the theoretical mass transfer rate from the secondary star induced by gravitational radiation (GR) and the spin-up of the white dwarf, − Ṁ2 = (3.90 ± 0.35) × 10−11M⊙ yr−1; 24% of it is caused by the spin-up. The agreement indicates that mass transfer is conservative. The measured Ṁ1 obviates the need for angular momentum loss (AML) by any process other than GR. We complemented this result with an estimate of the mean secular mass transfer rate over ∼107 yr by interpreting the non-equilibrium radius of the secondary star in EX Hya based on published evolutionary calculations. This suggests a time-averaged mass transfer rate enhanced over GR by a factor fGR ≳ 2. Combined with the present-day lack of such an excess, we suggest that an enhanced secular AML is due to an intermittently active process, such as the proposed frictional motion of the binary in the remnants of nova outbursts. We argue that EX Hya, despite its weakly magnetic nature, has evolved in a very similar way to non-magnetic CVs. The properties of blue supergiants are key for constraining the end of the main sequence (MS) of massive stars. Whether the observed drop in the relative number of fast-rotating stars below ≈21 kK is due to enhanced mass-loss rates at the location of the bistability jump, or the result of the end of the MS is still debated. Here, we combine newly derived estimates of photospheric and wind parameters with Gaia distances and wind terminal velocities from the literature to obtain upper limits on the mass-loss rates for a sample of 116 Galactic luminous blue supergiants. The parameter space covered by the sample ranges between 35–15 kK in Teff and 4.8–5.8 dex in log(L/L⊙). Our results show no increase in the mass-loss rates over the bistability jump. Therefore, we argue that the drop in rotational velocities cannot be explained by enhanced mass loss. Since a large jump in the mass-loss rates is commonly included in evolutionary models, we suggest an urgent revision of the default prescriptions currently in use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. We aim to investigate the theoretical possibility of accurately determining the helium-to-metal enrichment ratio ΔY/ΔZ from precise observations of double-lined eclipsing binary systems. Methods. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we drew synthetic binary systems with masses between 0.85 and 1.00 M⊙ from a grid of stellar models. Both stars were sampled from a grid with ΔY/ΔZ = 2.0, with a primary star at 80% of its main-sequence evolution. Subsequently, a broader grid with ΔY/ΔZ from 1.0 to 3.0 was used in the fitting process. To account for observational uncertainties, two scenarios were explored: S1, with realistic uncertainties of 100 K in temperature and 0.1 dex in [Fe/H]; and S2, with halved uncertainties. We repeated the simulation at two baseline metallicities: [Fe/H] = 0.0 and −0.3. Results. The posterior distributions of ΔY/ΔZ revealed significant biases. The distributions were severely biased towards the edge of the allowable range in the S1 error scenario. The situation only marginally improved when considering the S2 scenario. The effect is due to the impact of changing ΔY/ΔZ in the stellar effective temperature and its interplay with [Fe/H] observational error, and it is therefore not restricted to the specific fitting method. Despite the presence of these systematic discrepancies, the age of the systems were recovered unbiased with 10% precision. Conclusions. Our findings indicate that the observational uncertainty in effective temperature and metallicity significantly hinders the accurate determination of the ΔY/ΔZ parameter from main-sequence binary systems. Context. The metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the Galactic bulge is characterized by a multi-peak shape, with a metal-poor peak centered at [Fe/H] ∼ −0.3 dex and a metal-rich peak centered at [Fe/H] ∼ +0.3 dex. The bimodality of the MDF is also reflected in the [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance ratios, suggesting the presence of different stellar populations in the bulge. Aims. In this work we aim to reproduce the observed MDF of the Galactic bulge by testing a scenario in which the metal-poor component of the bulge is formed by stars formed in situ, during a strong burst of star formation, while the metal-rich population is formed by stars created in situ during a second burst of star formation and/or stars accreted from the innermost part of the Galactic disk as an effect of a growing bar. Methods. We adopted a chemical evolution model that is able to follow the evolution of several chemical species with detailed nucleosynthesis prescriptions. In particular, because of the importance of the production of Fe in constraining the MDF, close attention is paid to the production of this element in both Type Ia supernovae and massive stars. In particular, we included yields from rotating massive stars with different rotational velocity prescriptions. Our model also takes the infall and outflow of gas into account, as well as the effect of stellar migration. Results are compared to ∼13 000 stars from the SDSS/APOGEE survey that belong to the region located at a Galactocentric distance RGC ≤ 3.5 kpc. Results. We successfully reproduce the observed double-peak shape of the bulge MDF as well as the abundance trends of the α elements relative to Fe by assuming both (i) a multi-burst star formation history with a quenching of the first burst of ∼102 Myr and (ii) migration of stars from the innermost part of the Milky Way disk, as an effect of a growing bar. According to our results, the fraction of the stellar mass of the bulge-bar that belongs to the inner disk is ∼40%. In terms of the nucleosynthesis, we conclude that models that assume either no rotation for massive stars or a distribution of rotational velocities that favors slow rotation at high metallicities best reproduce the observed MDF as well as the [α/Fe] and the [Ce/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance patterns. Context. Interstellar surface chemistry is a complex process that occurs in icy layers that have accumulated onto grains of different sizes. The efficiency of the surface processes often depends on the immediate environment of the adsorbed molecules. Aims. We investigated how gas-grain chemistry changes when the surface molecule binding energy is modified, depending on the properties of the surface. Methods. In a gas-grain astrochemical model, molecular binding energy gradually changes for three different environments –(1) the bare grain surface, (2) polar water-dominated ices, and (3) weakly polar carbon monoxide-dominated ices. In addition to diffusion, evaporation, and chemical desorption, photodesorption was also made binding energy-dependent, in line with experimental results. These phenomena occur in a collapsing prestellar core model that considers five grain sizes with ices arranged into four layers. Results. Variable desorption energy moderately affects gas-grain chemistry. Bare-grain effects slow down ice accumulation, while easier diffusion of molecules on weakly polar ices promotes the production of carbon dioxide. Efficient chemical desorption from bare grains significantly delays the appearance of the first ice monolayer. Conclusions. The combination of multiple aspects of grain surface chemistry creates a gas-ice balance that is different from simpler models. The composition of the interstellar ices is regulated by several binding-energy dependent desorption mechanisms. We present new simulations investigating the impact of mass transfer on the asteroseismic signals of slowly pulsating B stars. We used MESA to simulate the evolution of a binary star system and GYRE to compute the asteroseismic properties of the accretor star. We show that, compared to a single star of the same final mass, a star that has undergone accretion (of non-enriched material) has a significantly different internal structure, which is evident in both the hydrogen abundance profile and the Brunt-Väisälä frequency profile. These differences result in significant changes in the observed period spacing patterns, implying that one may use this as a diagnostic to test whether a star's core has been rejuvenated as a result of accretion. We show that it is essential to consider the full multimodal posterior distributions when fitting stellar properties of mass-gainers to avoid drawing misleading conclusions. Even with these considerations, stellar ages will be significantly underestimated when assuming single star evolution for a mass-gainer. We find that future detectors with improved uncertainties would rule out single star models with the correct mass and central hydrogen fraction. Our proof of principle analysis demonstrates the need to further investigate the impact of binary interactions on stellar asteroseismic signals for a wide range of parameters, such as the initial mass, the amount of mass transferred, and the age of the accretor star at the onset of mass transfer. Context. Understanding the effects of rotation in stellar evolution is key to modelling early-type stars, half of which have equatorial velocities over 100 km s−1. The nearby star Altair is an example of such fast-rotating stars, and furthermore, it has the privilege of being modelled by a detailed 2D concordance model that reproduces most of its observables. Aims. The aim of this paper is to include new asteroseismic frequencies to improve our knowledge of Altair, especially its age. Methods. We processed images of Altair obtained during July 2022 by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite using the halo photometry technique to obtain its light curve over this observation period. Results. By analysing the light curve, we derived a set of 22 new frequencies in the oscillation spectrum of Altair and confirmed 12 previously known frequencies. Compared with model predictions, we could associate ten frequencies with ten axisymmetric modes. This identification is based on the modelled visibility of the modes. Moreover, nine of the modelled frequencies can be adjusted to simultaneously match their corresponding observed frequencies, once the core hydrogen mass fraction of the concordance model is set to Xcore/Xini ≃ 0.972, with Xini = 0.739. Using the combined results of a 1D MESA model computing the pre-main sequence and a 2D time-dependent ESTER model computing the main sequence, we find that this core hydrogen abundance sets the age of Altair to 88 ± 10 Myr, which is slightly younger than previous estimates. Aims. We aim to measure the impact of our mass-loss recipe in the evolution of massive stars at the metallicity of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Methods. We used the Geneva-evolution code (GENEC) to run evolutionary tracks for stellar masses ranging from 20 to 85 M⊙ at SMC metallicity (ZSMC = 0.002). We upgraded the recipe for stellar winds by replacing Vink's formula with our self-consistent m-CAK prescription, which reduces the value of the mass-loss rate, Ṁ, by a factor of between two and six depending on the mass range. Results. The impact of our new [weaker] winds is wide, and it can be divided between direct and indirect impact. For the most massive models (60 and 85 M⊙) with Ṁ ≳ 2 × 10−7M⊙ yr−1, the impact is direct because lower mass loss make stars remove less envelope, and therefore they remain more massive and less chemically enriched at their surface at the end of their main sequence (MS) phase. For the less massive models (20 and 25 M⊙) with Ṁ ≲ 2 × 10−8M⊙ yr−1, the impact is indirect because lower mass loss means the stars keep high rotational velocities for a longer period of time, thus extending the H-core burning lifetime and subsequently reaching the end of the MS with higher surface enrichment. In either case, given that the conditions at the end of the H-core burning change, the stars will lose more mass during their He-core burning stages anyway. For the case of Mzams = 20–40 M⊙, our models predict stars will evolve through the Hertzsprung gap, from O-type supergiants to blue supergiants (BSGs), and finally red supergiants (RSGs), with larger mass fractions of helium compared to old evolution models. New models also sets the minimal initial mass required for a single star to become a Wolf-Rayet (WR) at metallicity Z = 0.002 at Mzams = 85 M⊙. Conclusions. These results reinforce the importance of upgrading mass-loss prescriptions in evolution models, in particular for the earlier stages of stellar lifetime, even for Z ≪ Z⊙. New values for Ṁ need to be complemented with upgrades in additional features such as convective-core overshooting and distribution of rotational velocities, besides more detailed spectroscopical observations from projects such as XShootU, in order to provide a robust framework for the study of massive stars at low-metallicity environments. Context. Numerical computations of stellar oscillations for models representative of B-type stars predict fewer modes to be excited than observations reveal from modern space-based photometric data. One shortcoming of state-of-the-art evolution models of B-type stars that may cause a lack of excited modes is the absence of microscopic diffusion in most such models. Aims. We investigate whether the inclusion of microscopic diffusion in stellar models of B-type stars, notably radiative levitation experienced by isotopes, leads to extra mode driving by the opacity mechanism compared to the case of models that do not include microscopic diffusion. Methods. We consider the case of slowly to moderately rotating stars and use non-rotating equilibrium models, while we account for (uniform) rotation in the computations of the pulsation frequencies. We calculate 1D stellar structure and evolution models with and without microscopic diffusion and examine the effect of radiative levitation on mode excitation, for both low-radial order pressure and gravity modes and for high-radial order gravity modes. As is common practice in asteroseismology, rotation is included in the pulsation computations according to the mode's frequency regime. For modes having frequencies below twice the rotation frequency, that is, modes in the sub-inertial regime, we adopt the traditional approximation of rotation. For modes in the super-inertial regime with frequency above twice the rotation frequency, rotation is treated perturbatively up to first order in the rotation. We consider macroscopic envelope mixing induced by internal gravity waves to compute the modes and study its effect on the surface abundances. Results. We find systematically more modes to be excited for the stellar models including microscopic diffusion compared to those without it, in agreement with observational findings of pulsating B-type dwarfs. Furthermore, the models with microscopic diffusion predict that excited modes occur earlier on in the evolution compared to modes without it. In order to maintain realistic surface abundances during the main sequence, we include macroscopic envelope mixing by internal gravity waves. Along with microscopic diffusion, such macroscopic envelope mixing ensures both more excited modes and surface abundances consistent with spectroscopic studies of B-type stars. Conclusions. While radiative levitation has so far largely been neglected in stellar evolution computations of B-type stars for computational convenience, it impacts mode excitation predictions for stellar models of such stars. Context. The chemical evolution of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is driven by repeated thermal pulses (TPs). The duration of a TP is only a few hundred years, whereas an inter-pulse period lasts 104 − 105 yr. Direct observations of TPs are hence unlikely. However, the detached shells seen in CO line emission that are formed as a result of a TP provide indirect constraints on the changes experienced by the star during the pulse. Aims. We aim to resolve the spatial and kinematic sub-structures in five detached-shell sources to provide detailed constraints for hydrodynamic models that describe the formation and evolution of the shells. Methods. We used observations of the 12CO (1 − 0) emission towards five carbon-AGB stars with ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array), including previously published observations of the carbon AGB star U Ant. The data have angular resolutions of 0″​​.3 to 1″ and a velocity resolution of 0.3 km s−1. This enabled us to quantify spatial and kinematic structures in the shells. Combining the ALMA data with single-dish observations of the 12CO (1 − 0) to 12CO (4 − 3) emission towards the sources, we used radiative transfer models to compare the observed structures with previous estimates of the shell masses and temperatures. Results. The observed emission is separated into two distinct components: a more coherent, bright outer shell and a more filamentary, fainter inner shell. The kinematic information shows that the inner sub-shells move at a higher velocity relative to the outer sub-shells. The observed sub-structures reveal a negative velocity gradient outwards across the detached shells, confirming the predictions from hydrodynamical models. However, the models do not predict a double-shell structure, and the CO emission likely only traces the inner and outer edges of the shell, implying a lack of CO in the middle layers of the detached shell. Previous estimates of the masses and temperatures are consistent with originating mainly from the brighter subshell, but the total shell masses are likely lower limits. Also, additional structures in the form of partial shells outside the detached shell around V644 Sco, arcs within the shell of R Scl, and a partially filled shell for DR Ser indicate a more complicated evolution of the shells and mass-loss process throughout the TP cycle than previously assumed. Conclusions. The observed spatial and kinematical splittings of the shells appear consistent with results from the hydrodynamical models, provided the CO emission does not trace the H2 density distribution in the shell but rather traces the edges of the shells. The hydrodynamical models predict very different density profiles depending on the evolution of the shells and the different physical processes involved in the wind-wind interaction (e.g. heating and cooling processes). It is therefore not possible to constrain the total shell mass based on the CO observations alone. Additional features outside and inside the shells complicate the interpretation of the data. Complementary observations of, for example, CI as a dissociation product of CO would be necessary to understand the distribution of CO compared to H2, in addition to new detailed hydrodynamical models of the pre-pulse, pulse, and post-pulse wind. Only a comprehensive combination of observations and models will allow us to constrain the evolution of the shells and the changes in the star during the thermal-pulse cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. The most reliable sources for determining absolute stellar parameters are the double-lined eclipsing binary systems. Some of these systems also show apsidal motion, characterized by the variable log k2. This point grants us the possibility of investigating the stellar interior, specifically the degree of stellar mass concentration. The first studies carried out about four decades ago on this topic showed appreciable discrepancies not only with respect to the comparison between the observed absolute dimensions and their theoretical counterparts, but mainly concerning the degree of mass concentration through the analysis of their apsidal motions. Fortunately, this scenario has been gradually improving with the advances in the quality of observational techniques and advances in the input physics of the evolutionary stellar models (e.g. opacities, thermonuclear reactions, equations of state, numerical techniques). These new developments in the input physics has improved the comparison between observations and the values predicted by theory, including the apsidal motion rates. This progress has lead us to investigate second-order effects such as rotation and dynamic tides. In this paper we deal with the effects of rotation on the degree of mass concentration. Methods. The stellar models were calculated using the MESA package. The mass range studied here was 0.40–25.0 M⊙ for a generic chemical composition characterized by X = 0.70 and Z = 0.02. The present models were computed without taking into account core overshooting in order to highlight the effects of rotation. Each model was followed from the pre-main sequence until the central hydrogen content is of the order of or less than 0.03, covering the range of masses and evolutionary status of the double-lined eclipsing binaries showing apsidal motion. Regarding the calculation of the internal structure coefficients, we integrated the Radau equation using the fifth-order Runge-Kutta method and a tolerance level of 10−7. As an auxiliary tool, homology transformations have been used to explain, qualitatively, how the equation of state, thermonuclear reactions, and convection impact the degree of mass concentration of the models. Results. In our past studies on the effects of rotation on log k2 an average correction was used for all models together. For this a small range of masses (2.0, 7.0, 15.0 M⊙) has been used. In the present paper the corrections due to the effects of rotation in log k2 are presented for each mass individually and for three evolutionary phases. This point is particularly important, given that these corrections show a clear dependence on the mass and on the evolutionary status. Such corrections can be easily introduced into the theoretical calculation of apsidal motion rates through a linear equation. Context. Understanding circumstellar disks is of prime importance in astrophysics; however, their birth process remains poorly constrained due to observational and numerical challenges. Recent numerical works have shown that the small-scale physics, often wrapped into a sub-grid model, play a crucial role in disk formation and evolution. This calls for a combined approach in which both the protostar and circumstellar disk are studied in concert. Aims. We aim to elucidate the small-scale physics and constrain sub-grid parameters commonly chosen in the literature by resolving the star-disk interaction. Methods. We carried out a set of very high resolution 3D radiative-hydrodynamics simulations that self-consistently describe the collapse of a turbulent, dense molecular cloud core to stellar densities. We studied the birth of the protostar, the circumstellar disk, and its early evolution (< 6 yr after protostellar formation). Results. Following the second gravitational collapse, the nascent protostar quickly reaches breakup velocity and sheds its surface material, thus forming a hot (∼103 K), dense, and highly flared circumstellar disk. The protostar is embedded within the disk such that material can flow without crossing any shock fronts. The circumstellar disk mass quickly exceeds that of the protostar, and its kinematics are dominated by self-gravity. Accretion onto the disk is highly anisotropic, and accretion onto the protostar mainly occurs through material that slides on the disk surface. The polar mass flux is negligible in comparison. The radiative behavior also displays a strong anisotropy, as the polar accretion shock was shown to be supercritical, whereas its equatorial counterpart is subcritical. We also find a remarkable convergence of our results with respect to initial conditions. Conclusions. These results reveal the structure and kinematics in the smallest spatial scales relevant to protostellar and circumstellar disk evolution. They can be used to describe accretion onto regions commonly described by sub-grid models in simulations studying larger-scale physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The vast majority of close binaries containing a compact object, including the progenitors of supernovae Ia and at least a substantial fraction of all accreting black holes in the Galaxy, form through common-envelope (CE) evolution. Despite this importance, we struggle to even understand the energy budget of CE evolution. For decades, observed long-period post-CE binaries have been interpreted as evidence of additional energies contributing during CE evolution. We have recently shown that this argument is based on simplified assumptions for all long-period post-CE binaries containing massive white dwarfs (WDs). The only remaining post-CE binary star that has been claimed to require contributions from additional energy sources to understand its formation is KOI 3278. Aims. Here, we address in detail the potential evolutionary history of KOI 3278. In particular, we investigate whether extra energy sources, such as recombination energy, are indeed required to explain its existence. Methods. We used the 1D stellar evolution code MESA to carry out binary evolution simulations and searched for potential formation pathways for KOI 3278 that are able to explain its observed properties. Results. We find that KOI 3278 can be explained if the WD progenitor filled its Roche lobe during a helium shell flash. In this case, the orbital period of KOI 3278 can be reproduced if the CE binding energy is calculated taking into account gravitational energy and thermodynamic internal energy. While the CE evolution that led to the formation of KOI 3278 must have been efficient – that is, most of the available orbital energy must have been used to unbind the CE – recombination energy is not required. Conclusions. We conclude that currently not a single observed post-CE binary requires one to assume that energy sources other than gravitational and thermodynamic energy are contributing to CE evolution. KOI 3278, however, remains an intriguing post-CE binary as, unlike its siblings, understanding its existence requires highly efficient CE ejection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations of nearby massive galaxies have revealed that they are older and richer in metals and magnesium than their low-mass counterparts. In particular, the overabundance of magnesium compared to iron, [Mg/Fe], is interpreted to reflect the short star formation history that the current massive galaxies underwent early in the Universe. We present a systematic revision of the [Mg/Fe] – velocity dispersion (σ) relation based on stacked spectra of early-type galaxies with a high signal-to-noise ratio from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Using the penalized pixel-fitting (pPXF) method and the MILES single stellar population models, we fit a wide optical wavelength range to measure the net α-abundance. The combination of pPXF and α-enhanced MILES models incorrectly leads to an apparently decreasing trend of [α/Fe] with velocity dispersion. We interpret this result as a consequence of variations in the individual abundances of the different α-elements. This warrants caution for a naive use of full spectral fitting algorithms paired with stellar population models that do not take individual elemental abundance variations into account, especially when deriving averaged quantities such as the mean [α/Fe] of a stellar population. In addition, and based on line-strength measurements, we quantify the impact of a non-universal initial mass function on the recovered abundance pattern of galaxies. In particular, we find that a simultaneous fit of the slope of the initial mass function and the [Mg/Fe] results in a shallower [Mg/Fe]–σ relation. Therefore, our results suggest that star formation in massive galaxies lasted longer than what has been reported previously, although it still occurred significantly faster than in the solar neighbourhood. Context. The study of the Milky Way is living a golden era thanks to the enormous high-quality datasets delivered by Gaia, and space asteroseismic and ground-based spectroscopic surveys. However, the current major challenge to reconstructing the chronology of the Milky Way is the difficulty to derive precise stellar ages for large samples of stars. The colour–magnitude diagram (CMD) fitting technique offers an alternative to individual age determinations to derive the star formation history (SFH) of complex stellar populations. Aims. Our aim is to obtain a detailed dynamically evolved SFH (deSFH) of the solar neighbourhood, and the age and metallicity distributions that result from it. We define deSFH as the amount of mass transformed into stars, as a function of time and metallicity, in order to account for the population of stars contained in a particular volume. Methods. We present a new package to derive SFHs from CMD fitting tailored to work with Gaia data, called CMDft.Gaia, and we use it to analyse the CMD of the Gaia Catalogue of Nearby Stars (GCNS), which contains a complete census of the (mostly thin disc) stars currently within 100 pc of the Sun. Results. We present an unprecedentedly detailed view of the evolution of the Milky Way disc at the solar radius. The bulk of star formation started 11–10.5 Gyr ago at metallicity around solar, and continued with a slightly decreasing metallicity trend until 6 Gyr ago. Between 6 and 4 Gyr ago, a notable break in the age–metallicity distribution is observed, with three stellar populations with distinct metallicities (sub-solar, solar, and super-solar), possibly indicating some dramatic event in the life of our Galaxy. Star formation then resumed 4 Gyr ago with a somewhat bursty behaviour, metallicity near solar and average star formation rate higher than in the period before 6 Gyr ago. The derived metallicity distribution closely matches precise spectroscopic data, which also show stellar populations deviating from solar metallicity. Interestingly, our results reveal the presence of intermediate-age populations exhibiting both a metallicity typical of the thick disc, approximately [M/H] ≃ −0.5, and super-solar metallicity. Conclusions. The many tests performed indicate that, with high-precision photometric and distance data such as that provided by Gaia, CMDft.Gaia is able to achieve a precision of ≲10% and an accuracy better than 6% in the dating of stellar populations, even at old ages. A comparison with independent spectroscopic metallicity information shows that metallicity distributions are also determined with high precision, without imposing any a priori metallicity information in the fitting process. This opens the door to obtaining detailed and robust information on the evolution of the stellar populations of the Milky Way over cosmic time. The majority of massive stars are formed in multiple systems, and at some point during their life, they interact with their companions via mass transfer. This interaction typically leads to the primary shedding its outer envelope, resulting in the formation of a "stripped star". Classically, stripped stars are expected to quickly contract to become hot and UV-bright helium stars. Surprisingly, recent optical spectroscopic surveys have unveiled many stripped stars that are much larger and cooler, appearing "puffed up" and overlapping with the Main Sequence (MS) in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. Here, we study the evolutionary nature of puffed-up stripped (PS) stars and the duration of this enigmatic phase using the stellar-evolution code MESA. We computed grids of binary models at four metallicities: Solar (Z⊙ = 0.017), Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, Z = 0.0068), Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC, Z = 0.0034), and Z = 0.1 Z⊙. Contrary to previous assumptions, we find that stripped stars regain thermal equilibrium shortly after the end of mass transfer and maintain it during most of the PS phase. Their further contraction towards hot and compact He stars is determined by the rate at which the residual H-rich envelope is depleted, with the main agents being H-shell burning (dominant for M ≲ 50 M⊙) and mass-loss in winds. The duration of the PS star phase is approximately 10% of the core-He burning lifetime (1% total lifetime) and up to 100 times more than the thermal timescale. It decreases with increasing mass and luminosity and increases with metallicity. We explored several factors influencing PS star lifetimes: orbital period, mass ratio, winds, and semiconvection. We further carried out a simple binary population synthesis estimation, finding that ∼0.5–0.7% of all the stars with log (L/L⊙) > 3.7 may, in fact, be PS stars. Our results indicate that tens to hundreds of PS stars in post-interaction binaries may be hiding in the MS population, disguised as 'normal' stars: ∼100 (∼280) in the SMC (LMC) and ∼1500 in the Milky Way. Their true nature may be revealed by spectroscopically measured low surface gravities, high N enrichment, and likely slow rotation rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. A crucial aspect in addressing the challenge of measuring the core mass function (CMF), that is pivotal for comprehending the origin of the initial mass function (IMF), lies in constraining the temperatures of the cores. Aims. We aim to measure the luminosity, mass, column density and dust temperature of star-forming regions imaged by the ALMA-IMF large program. These fields were chosen to encompass early evolutionary stages of massive protoclusters. High angular resolution mapping is required to capture the properties of protostellar and pre-stellar cores within these regions, and to effectively separate them from larger features, such as dusty filaments. Methods. We employed the point process mapping (PPMAP) technique, enabling us to perform spectral energy distribution fitting of far-infrared and submillimeter observations across the 15 ALMA-IMF fields, at an unmatched 2.5″ angular resolution. By combining the modified blackbody model with near-infrared data, we derived bolometric luminosity maps. We estimated the errors impacting values of each pixel in the temperature, column density, and luminosity maps. Subsequently, we employed the extraction algorithm getsf on the luminosity maps in order to detect luminosity peaks and measure their associated masses. Results. We obtained high-resolution constraints on the luminosity, dust temperature, and mass of protoclusters, that are in agreement with previously reported measurements made at a coarser angular resolution. We find that the luminosity-to-mass ratio correlates with the evolutionary stage of the studied regions, albeit with intra-region variability. We compiled a PPMAP source catalog of 313 luminosity peaks using getsf on the derived bolometric luminosity maps. The PPMAP source catalog provides constraints on the mass and luminosity of protostars and cores, although one source may encompass several objects. Finally, we compare the estimated luminosity-to-mass ratio of PPMAP sources with evolutionary tracks and discuss the limitations imposed by the 2.5″ beam. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper main sequence are defined by spectral peculiarities that indicate unusual elemental abundance patterns in the presence of diffusion in the calm, stellar atmospheres. Some of them have a stable local magnetic field of up to several kiloGauss. The pre-main-sequence evolution of these objects is still a mystery and contains many open questions. Aims. We identify CP stars on the pre-main sequence to determine possible mechanisms that lead to the occurrence of chemical peculiarities in the (very) early stages of stellar evolution. Methods. We identified likely pre-main-sequence stars by fitting the spectral energy distributions. The subsequent analysis using stellar spectra and photometric time series helped us to distinguish between CP and non-CP stars. Additionally, we compared our results to the literature to provide the best possible quality assessment. Results. Out of 45 candidates, about 70% seem to be true CP stars or CP candidates. Furthermore, 9 sources appear to be CP stars on the pre-main sequence, and all are magnetic. We finally report a possible CP2 star that is also a pre-main-sequence star and was not previously in the literature. Conclusions.
