Plant traits are increasingly being used to improve prediction of plant function, including plant demography. However, the capability of plant traits to predict demographic rates remains uncertain, particularly in the context of trees experiencing a changing climate. Here we present data combining 17 plant traits associated with plant structure, metabolism and hydraulic status, with measurements of long‐term mean, maximum and relative growth rates for 176 trees from the world?s longest running tropical forest drought experiment. We demonstrate that plant traits can predict mean annual tree growth rates with moderate explanatory power. However, only combinations of traits associated more directly with plant functional processes, rather than more commonly employed traits like wood density or leaf mass per area, yield the power to predict growth. Critically, we observe a shift from growth being controlled by traits related to carbon cycling (assimilation and respiration) in well‐watered trees, to traits relating to plant hydraulic stress in drought‐stressed trees. We also demonstrate that even with a very comprehensive set of plant traits and growth data on large numbers of tropical trees, considerable uncertainty remains in directly interpreting the mechanisms through which traits influence performance in tropical forests. Whether tropical trees acclimate to long‐term drought stress remains unclear. This uncertainty is amplified if drought stress is accompanied by changes in other drivers such as the increases in canopy light exposure that might be induced by tree mortality or other disturbances. Photosynthetic capacity, leaf respiration, non‐structural carbohydrate (NSC) storage and stomatal conductance were measured on 162 trees at the world's longest running (15 years) tropical forest drought experiment. We test whether surviving trees have altered strategies for carbon storage and carbon use in the drier and elevated light conditions present following drought‐related tree mortality. Relative to control trees, the surviving trees experiencing the drought treatment showed functional responses including: (a) moderately reduced photosynthetic capacity; (b) increased total leaf NSC; and (c) a switch from starch to soluble sugars as the main store of branch NSC. This contrasts with earlier findings at this experiment of no change in photosynthetic capacity or NSC storage. The changes detected here only occurred in the subset of drought‐stressed trees with canopies exposed to high radiation and were absent in trees with less‐exposed canopies and also in the community average. In contrast to previous results acquired through less intensive species sampling from this experiment, we also observe no species‐average drought‐induced change in leaf respiration. Our results suggest that long‐term responses to drought stress are strongly influenced by a tree's full‐canopy light environment and therefore that disturbance‐induced changes in stand density and dynamics are likely to substantially impact tropical forest responses to climate change. We also demonstrate that, while challenging, intensive sampling is essential in tropical forests to avoid sampling biases caused by limited taxonomic coverage. Summary The tropics are predicted to become warmer and drier, and understanding the sensitivity of tree species to drought is important for characterizing the risk to forests of climate change. This study makes use of a long‐term drought experiment in the Amazon rainforest to evaluate the role of leaf‐level water relations, leaf anatomy and their plasticity in response to drought in six tree genera.The variables (osmotic potential at full turgor, turgor loss point, capacitance, elastic modulus, relative water content and saturated water content) were compared between seasons and between plots (control and through‐fall exclusion) enabling a comparison between short‐ and long‐term plasticity in traits. Leaf anatomical traits were correlated with water relation parameters to determine whether water relations differed among tissues.The key findings were: osmotic adjustment occurred in response to the long‐term drought treatment; species resistant to drought stress showed less osmotic adjustment than drought‐sensitive species; and water relation traits were correlated with tissue properties, especially the thickness of the abaxial epidermis and the spongy mesophyll.These findings demonstrate that cell‐level water relation traits can acclimate to long‐term water stress, and highlight the limitations of extrapolating the results of short‐term studies to temporal scales associated with climate change.

Discovered in 1980 and unleashed an utter gold rush of the modern era, Serra Pelada was the largest open-air mine in Brazil. About 80,000 gold prospectors worked there until 1984, when the gold pits were flooded. The environmental impact caused by mining inflicted irreversible damage to the ecosystem, with the formation of a large lake and piles of waste rock and sterile overburden, still evident 28 years after the mine was closed. This study aimed to evaluate the available and pseudo total contents of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), the contamination and pollution levels, and to understand how the biological soil factors are related to the chemical properties of the soil and the available PTE contents in the Serra Pelada - Amazônia, Brazil. Soil was collected from seven areas around the lake: Area 1 - margin of the mine without waste and/or sterile deposits; Area 2 - margin with waste and/or sterile deposits; Area 3 - area with sterile deposit; Area 4 - mine tailings, denominated curimã by the prospectors, from which gold had been extracted; Area 5 - sediment dredged from the lake in the mine pit; Area 6 - area with agroforestry system; Area 7 - riparian forest, unaffected by the artisanal gold extraction process (control treatment). Apart from selenium (Se), all evaluated elements, in at least one of the studied areas, exceeded the contents of the investigation values (defined as the content of a given substance in soil or groundwater above which the human health is under potential direct or indirect risks, considering a standardized exposure scenario) in agricultural areas in Brazil, as determined by the National Council of the Environment. Soil enrichment and contamination with Co, Ba, Mn, and Hg were investigated. CO2 efflux from stems (CO2_stem) accounts for a substantial fraction of tropical forest gross primary productivity, but the climate sensitivity of this flux remains poorly understood. We present a study of tropical forest CO2_stem from 215 trees across wet and dry seasons, at the world?s longest running tropical forest drought experiment site. We show a 27% increase in wet season CO2_stem in the droughted forest relative to a control forest. This was driven by increasing CO2_stem in trees 10?40 cm diameter. Furthermore, we show that drought increases the proportion of maintenance to growth respiration in trees > 20 cm diameter, including large increases in maintenance respiration in the largest droughted trees, > 40 cm diameter. However, we found no clear taxonomic influence on CO2_stem and were unable to accurately predict how drought sensitivity altered ecosystem scale CO2_stem, due to substantial uncertainty introduced by contrasting methods previously employed to scale CO2_stem fluxes. Our findings indicate that under future scenarios of elevated drought, increases in CO2_stem may augment carbon losses, weakening or potentially reversing the tropical forest carbon sink. However, due to substantial uncertainties in scaling CO2_stem fluxes, stand-scale future estimates of changes in stem CO2 emissions remain highly uncertain. Improvement of fallow vegetation can have a positive impact on the productivity of slash-and-mulch systems in eastern Amazonia. Phosphorus fertilization can increase biomass and nutrient stocks in the fallow phase, thereby improving nutrient cycling and crop productivity. Here, we compared biomass and nutrient stocks under three fallow management strategies: (1) natural fallow (regrowth vegetation) - NF; (2) NF vegetation improved with leguminous trees (Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel and Inga edulis Mart.) - IF; and (3) NF vegetation improved with leguminous trees plus phosphorus fertilization - IF+P. We quantified above- and belowground biomass and N, P, K, Ca, and Mg stocks after 23 months of fallow. The IF+P increased aboveground (leaf + branch + stem + liana) biomass and N, P, Ca, and Mg stocks, compared to NF. Similarly, total (aboveground + belowground) biomass and N and P stocks were higher for IF+P than for NF. The differences in aboveground biomass between NF and improved fallow managements were attributed exclusively to the contribution of the tree species enriching fallow vegetation. Phosphorus application increased the aboveground biomass accumulation of the species for fallow improvement. Improving the fallow vegetation with P-fertilized, fast-growing, N-fixing species represents an efficient management strategy to accelerate the reestablishment of biomass and nutrient stocks in slash-and-mulch systems in Amazonia. Florestas secundárias ocupam uma área extensa e crescente na bacia Amazônica, porém determinações acuradas do impacto dessas florestas nos ciclos de carbono e nutrientes têm sido dificultadas pelo número reduzido de equações alométricas. Neste estudo, nós desenvolvemos equações em nível de comunidade e espécies individuais para estimar a biomassa total da parte aérea de uma floresta secundária com 15 anos de idade na Amazônia oriental. O trabalho de campo utilizou amostragem aleatória de ramos, que é uma técnica rápida, porém pouco utilizada em florestas tropicais. Baseada no erro padrão da série de segmentos individuais (14%), a consistência da série de segmentos totais amostrados foi considerada elevada, sugerindo que o método pode ser eficiente em comparação com procedimentos tradicionais. Os melhores ajustes foram obtidos com a equação tradicional Y=a×DBHb, onde Y é a biomassa, DBH é o diâmetro à altura do peito, e a e b são parâmetros para cada espécie arbórea. Ajustes razoáveis também foram alcançados com equações da forma Y=a(BA×H), onde Y é a biomassa, BA é a área basal, H é a altura e a é um parâmetro específico para cada espécie arbórea. Comparações com equações disponíveis na literatura indicaram uma faixa de erro provável de -33% a +29% usando-se relações desenvolvidas para outros sítios. Nós também apresentamos equações para os seguintes componentes da biomassa da parte aérea: tronco, ramos e folhas.

A vegetação de pousio é um dos principais componentes dos sistemas agroflorestais sequenciais de derrubada e queima, praticados tradicionalmente pela agricultura familiar na Amazônia. A remoção progressiva de nutrientes do solo por essa prática implica em reduções contínuas nos estoques de carbono e nutrientes, causando declínio da produtividade do solo, perda da capacidade regeneração e diminuição da diversidade de espécies da vegetação. O melhoramento de pousio com espécies leguminosas fixadoras do nitrogênio atmosférico pode contribuir para uma maior produção de biomassa e acúmulo de nutrientes em comparação com a vegetação espontânea, atendendo à demanda nutricional das culturas subsequentes, podendo ser considerada como uma tecnologia de produção sustentável. Esse trabalho avaliou o efeito da adubação fosfatada de baixa solubilidade no acúmulo de biomassa e nutrientes da parte aérea de leguminosas arbóreas utilizadas em enriquecimento de vegetação de pousio. O experimento foi conduzido por 23 meses, em um sistema agroflorestal de ?corte e trituração? em Marapanim, Pará. Foram utilizadas as espécies tachi-branco - Sclerolobium paniculatum Vogel e ingá - Inga edulis Mart e foram estimados biomassa, teor e estoque de nutrientes dos compartimentos folha, galho e tronco. Houve acúmulo de biomassa, estoques de P, Ca e Mg nas folhas, estoque de P nos galhos e o teor de cálcio nas folhas das leguminosas é limitado por fósforo, segundo os resultados encontrados. A espécie Inga edulis apresentou maiores teores de potássio, cálcio e magnésio nos compartimentos folha, galho e tronco, enquanto que a espécie Sclerolobium paniculatum apresentou maiores acúmulos de biomassa e estoques de nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio, cálcio e magnésio nos compartimentos folha, galho e tronco.

A disponibilidade de nutrientes, especialmente fósforo, e de água no solo influenciam fortemente a simbiose micorrízica em ecossistemas florestais. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o impacto da remoção de serapilheira e do aumento da disponibilidade de água no solo sobre a densidade de esporos e a colonização micorrízica em raízes apogeotrópicas e não-apogeotrópicas em floresta secundária na Amazônia oriental. Foram analisadas a porcentagem de colonização micorrízica de raízes finas (diâmetro ≤ 2 mm) apogeotrópicas e não-apogeotrópicas (presentes na camada de 0-10 cm do solo), a densidade de esporos, o teor de glomalina e a disponibilidade de fósforo no solo. A remoção de serapilheira não reduziu a disponibilidade de fósforo no solo. A densidade de esporos também não foi afetada pela remoção de serapilheira. De forma geral, as variáveis estudadas variaram sazonalmente, com exceção da colonização micorrízica em raízes não-apogeotrópicas e do teor de glomalina, mas não foram afetadas pela alteração na disponibilidade de água no solo decorrente da irrigação. Danos mecânicos ao sistema radicular apogeotrópico, inerentes à remoção quinzenal da serapilheira, devem ter contribuído para reduzir a colonização micorrízica em raízes apogeotrópicas e não-apogeotrópicas e, consequentemente, o teor de glomalina no solo. Os resultados deste estudo sugerem que a redução da cobertura do solo pode impactar negativamente a simbiose fungo-planta. The availability of soil nutrients (especially phosphorus) and soil water strongly influence mycorrhizal symbiosis in forest ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of litter removal and increased soil moisture availability on the spore density and mycorrhizal colonization of apogeotropic and non-apogeotropic roots of a secondary forest stand in eastern Amazonia. We determined the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization of apogeotropic and non-apogeotropic (0-10 cm soil depth) fine roots (diameter ≤ 2 mm), spore density, glomalin concentration, and soil phosphorus availability. Litter removal did not reduce soil phosphorus availability. The spore density was not affected by litter removal. In general, the variables varied on a seasonal basis, except the mycorrizal colonization of non-apogetropic roots and glomalin concentration, but were not affected by irrigation. Mechanical damage to the apogeotropic root system, inherent to the fortnightly litter removal, may have contributed to decrease mycorrhizal colonization of both apogeotropic and non-apogeotropic roots and, consequently, soil glomalin. Entre os gases de efeito estufa, o óxido nitroso (N2O) é considerado importante por apresentar poder de aquecimento 296 vezes maior que o dióxido de carbono (CO2) e tem sua dinâmica muito dependente da disponibilidade de C e de N mineral no solo. Portanto, conhecer os fatores que interferem na sua emissão é fundamental para desenvolver estratégias de mitigação. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a dinâmica da emissão de N2O na presença de diferentes quantidades de palha de arroz e de teores de nitrato na solução do solo. Para tal, nove tratamentos com a combinação de doses de nitrato de sódio (equivalente a 0, 50 e 100 g kg-1 de N-NO−3) e as quantidades de palha de arroz (equivalente a 0, 5 e 10 Mg ha-1) foram aplicados em vasos, onde foram submetidos a condições anaeróbicas por alagamento. A emissão de N2O foi influenciada positivamente pela maior dose de NO−3 e pela menor quantidade de palha adicionada no solo. No 1º dia após alagamento (DAA), a emissão de N2O foi alterada de forma significativa entre os tratamentos, com e sem adição de NO−3, com pouca interferência da presença da palha de arroz nesse momento. O maior pico de emissão foi observado no 4º DAA nos tratamentos com maior adição de NO−3; naquele momento, a adição da palha de arroz provocou efeito negativo sobre a emissão de N2O, provavelmente por causa da imobilização do NO−3. Também houve alterações nas demais características eletroquímicas do solo, em que as maiores adições de palha elevaram os teores de Fe, Mn e C dissolvido. Esses resultados indicaram que a redução da concentração de NO−3 no solo e o aumento da quantidade de palha incorporada diminuem a emissão de N2O.

O sucesso da produção de palma de óleo (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) em sistemas agroflorestais (SAFs) na Amazônia está condicionado ao manejo sustentável do solo, em especial dos atributos químicos e microbiológicos. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar o impacto de SAFs com palma de óleo sobre os teores de nitrogênio (N) mineral e microbiano do solo, em função da sazonalidade pluviométrica. Avaliamos diferentes formas de N do solo (N microbiano, nitrato, amônio), além da concentração de carbono (C) do solo, em SAFs com baixa e alta diversidade de espécies cultivadas, os quais foram comparados com uma floresta secundária adjacente de 13 anos de idade. Para a maioria das variáveis analisadas (N total, relação C:N, N microbiano, relação N microbiano:N total, amônio) houve diferença significativa somente entre as épocas de amostragem. A concentração média de C no solo sob o SAF com alta diversidade (15,6 mg g-1) foi maior do que na floresta (13 mg g-1). Na época chuvosa a concentração de nitrato no SAF com alta diversidade foi 5,1 mg (N) kg-1 (solo), maior do que nos demais tipos de vegetação, resultando em menor concentração média de amônio no solo sob esse SAF, cujo valor foi 9,6 mg (N) kg-1 (solo). A mineralização do N no SAF com baixa diversidade, na época seca, foi 0,1 mg (N) kg-1 (solo) dia-1, menor do que nos demais tipos de vegetação. As variáveis analisadas foram mais sensíveis à sazonalidade da precipitação pluviométrica do que à conversão de floresta secundária em SAFs com palma de óleo. The success of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.)-based agroforestry systems (oil palm-AFS) depends on sustainable soil management, especially of soil chemical and microbiological characteristics. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of oil palm-AFS on soil mineral and microbial nitrogen (N) in contrasting rainfall seasons. We evaluated different soil nitrogen (N) forms (microbial-N, nitrate, ammonium) and soil carbon concentration in oil palm-AFS with low and high diversity of species planted, which were compared with an adjacent 13-yr-old secondary forest. Most variables (total N, C:N ratio, microbial-N, microbial-N:total N ratio, ammonium, and net nitrification rate) varied only in response to rainfall seasonality. Soil C was significantly higher in the high diversity AFS (15.6 mg g-1) than in the secondary forest (13.0 mg g-1). In the rainy season, nitrate concentration (5.1 mg N kg-1 soil) was higher in the high diversity AFS than in other vegetation types; consequently, the average soil ammonium concentration (9.6 mg N kg-1 soil) was significantly lower in the high diversity AFS. Net N mineralization in the low diversity AFS (0.1 mg N kg-1 soil day-1) in the dry season was significantly lower than in other vegetation types. The soil variables were more sensitive to the rainfall seasonality than to the conversion of secondary forest to oil palm-based agroforestry systems.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a dinâmica de produção de raízes finas (diâmetro ≤ 2 mm) em duas áreas de floresta secundária com diferentes idades. A produção de raízes finas foi monitorada utilizando a técnica de ingrowth core em um sítio com 18 anos de idade (2 ha) e um outro sítio com 10 anos de idade (0,5 ha), localizados na região de Apeú, nordeste do Estado do Pará. Os sítios foram abandonados depois de sucessivos ciclos agrícolas, iniciados em 1940. A produção mensal de raízes vivas foi semelhante entre os sítios e influenciada pela sazonalidade pluviométrica, com maior produção durante a estação seca para massa e comprimento. No entanto, a mortalidade, em termos de massa, foi maior no sítio de 10 anos. A sazonalidade influenciou a mortalidade somente no sítio de 18 anos, seguindo o padrão observado para as raízes vivas. A influência sazonal sobre a mortalidade em termos de comprimento foi diferente entre os sítios, com maior mortalidade durante a estação chuvosa no sítio de 10 anos e maior mortalidade durante a estação seca no sítio de 18 anos. O comprimento radicular específico foi maior durante a estação chuvosa e influenciado pelos sítios, sendo maior no sítio de 10 anos. A produção de raízes finas não foi influenciada pela cronossequência dos sítios estudados, provavelmente porque a produção de raízes finas pode ter estabilizado nos sítios ou depende mais das condições de clima e solo. A produção, em termos de massa e comprimento, foram indicadores que geralmente mostraram o mesmo padrão.

Este trabalho objetivou investigar as respostas morfológicas e o crescimento de Brachiaria brizantha e Paspalum fasciculatum cultivadas durante 21 dias sob condições de alagamento. A baixa disponibilidade de oxigênio devido ao alagamento reduziu significativamente as taxas de crescimento relativo e assimilatória líquida de B. brizantha, assim como a alocação de biomassa para raízes, aos 14 dias de alagamento. Em P. fasciculatum, as reduções das taxas e da alocação de biomassa foram significativas somente aos 21 dias de alagamento. Nas espécies estudadas, as adaptações morfológicas foram claramente evidenciadas com a formação de grande quantidade de raízes adventícias, que provavelmente contribuíram para a sobrevivência das mesmas à hipóxia. Estes resultados indicam que a espécie P. fasciculatum é mais tolerante ao alagamento quando comparada com B. brizantha.

Changes in land-use and climate are likely to alter resource (e.g., moisture and nutrient) availability in tropical forest soils, but quantitative assessment of the role of resource constraints as regulators of ecosystem processes is rather limited. In this dissertation, moisture and nutrient availability were altered through dry-season irrigation and bi-weekly aboveground litter removal, respectively, to study how these resources control aboveground and belowground ecosystem processes in a forest regrowth stand in the Brazilian Amazon. Moisture availability strongly constrains soil respiration as indicated by the responses of soil carbon dioxide emissions to soil wet-up events and dry-season irrigation. Higher moisture availability in irrigated plots also increased leaf litter decomposition and slightly increased soil nitrous oxide and methane emissions, but did not alter monthly litterfall quantity and quality, and soil nitric oxide emission. Litter removal decreased carbon dioxide emissions and litterfall nitrogen concentration, but had no effects on litterfall quantity, and soil nitrogen oxides and methane emissions. Aboveground net primary productivity was constrained by moisture availability as indicated by the response of wood increment to interannual variation in dry season rainfall and to irrigation, suggesting decreased potential of carbon sequestration from forest regrowth under anticipated scenarios of reduced rainfall in Amazonia.
