There is more to the sea than what you can see! Did you know that when you swim in the sea, you are actually swimming in a soup of carbon? The ocean has many carbon-containing things. Some are large like fish, whales, and shells, but most of them are too small to be seen unless we use microscopes. Some of these minuscule particles are living organisms, while the rest are their remains as they decompose. When land creatures die, they decompose into soil. In the ocean, creature remains are gradually dissolved in seawater. All this dead material contains the element carbon, which, at some point in time, was carbon dioxide in the air. The ocean stores a large portion of the carbon on our planet. In this article, we explain how all this carbon ends up in the ocean and how human activities affect the carbon cycle in the sea.

Climate warming and related drivers of soil thermal change in the Arctic are expected to modify the distribution and dynamics of carbon contained in perennially frozen grounds. Thawing of permafrost in the Mackenzie River watershed of northwestern Canada, coupled with increases in river discharge and coastal erosion, triggers the release of terrestrial organic matter (OMt) from the largest Arctic drainage basin in North America into the Arctic Ocean. While this process is ongoing and its rate is accelerating, the fate of the newly mobilized organic matter as it transits from the watershed through the delta and into the marine system remains poorly understood. In the framework of the European Horizon 2020 Nunataryuk programme, and as part of the Work Package 4 (WP4) Coastal Waters theme, four field expeditions were conducted in the Mackenzie Delta region and southern Beaufort Sea from April to September 2019. The temporal sampling design allowed the survey of ambient conditions in the coastal waters under full ice cover prior to the spring freshet, during ice breakup in summer, and anterior to the freeze-up period in fall. To capture the fluvial-marine transition zone, and with distinct challenges related to shallow waters and changing seasonal and meteorological conditions, the field sampling was conducted in close partnership with members of the communities of Aklavik, Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk, using several platforms, namely helicopters, snowmobiles, and small boats. Water column profiles of physical and optical variables were measured in situ, while surface water, groundwater, and sediment samples were collected and preserved for the determination of the composition and sources of OMt, including particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC and DOC), and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), as well as a suite of physical, chemical, and biological variables. Analysis of lignin in seawater is essential to understanding the fate of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the ocean and its role in the carbon cycle. Lignin is typically quantified by gas or liquid chromatography, coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS or LC-MS). MS instrumentation can be relatively expensive to purchase and maintain. Here we present an improved approach for quantification of lignin phenols using LC and absorbance detection. The approach applies a modified version of parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC2) to 2nd derivative absorbance chromatograms. It is capable of isolating individual elution profiles of analytes despite co-elution and overall improves sensitivity and specificity, compared to manual integration methods. For most lignin phenols, detection limits below 5 nmol L-1 were achieved, which is comparable to MS detection. The reproducibility across all laboratory stages for our reference material showed a relative standard deviation between 1.47% and 16.84% for all 11 lignin phenols. Changing the amount of DOM in the reaction vessel for the oxidation (dissolved organic carbon between 22 and 367 mmol L-1), did not significantly affect the final lignin phenol composition. The new method was applied to seawater samples from the Kattegat and Davis Strait. The total concentration of dissolved lignin phenols measured in the two areas was between 4.3-10.1 and 2.1-3.2 nmol L-1, respectively, which is within the range found by other studies. Comparison with a different oxidation approach and detection method (GC-MS) gave similar results and underline the potential of LC and absorbance detection for analysis of dissolved lignin with our proposed method.

Denitrifying woodchip bioreactors are passive, low-tech systems primarily designed to remove nitrate from shallow ground waters as well as point source discharges, including greenhouse or aquaculture effluents. Despite their capacity to achieve constant nitrate removal over several years, natural aquatic environments may be affected by the leaching of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from fresh woodchips during start-up. Simple on-site measures might reduce the woodchip leachate during start-up and thus add to the overall environmental sustain-ability of woodchip bioreactor installations. The aim of the study was to investigate whether foam fractionators could provide an effective solution. Water was flowed through fresh laboratory-scale woodchip bioreactors and recirculated through foam fractionators for 11 days. The bioreactors removed nitrate but increased phosphate and ammonia, which were not effectively removed via foam fractionation. However, foam fractionation did remove 37.8 +/- 4.7% of the dissolved chemical oxygen demand (CODdiss) leached during the first 11 days of operation. Fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that the DOM composition differed between the foam and water, where the foam fraction contained higher amounts of DOM associated with the highest bioavailability and hence the greatest potential environmental impact. Optimised foam fractionators could therefore help to reduce the environmental impact of DOM leachate from woodchip bioreactors during start-up.

Although we always associate the oceans to the blue color, other colors such as green, brown, and even yellowish can be observed. The diverse color palette presented in the oceans and other water bodies is due to the presence of colored components that interact with the light in the water. Those components are, for instance, (1) the water itself, which gives a blue color to the oceans; (2) very tiny plants that can give a greenish color to the water; (3) dissolved compounds that turns the water into a brown-yellowish color; and (4) sediments, which gives a milky color to the oceans. In this article, we explain how those components change the color of the water and how marine scientists use satellites to capture those changes from space and convert them into information for their research.

The Northeast Greenland shelf (NEGS) is a recipient of Polar Water (PW) from the Arctic Ocean, Greenland Ice Sheet melt, and Atlantic Water (AW). Here, we compile hydrographical measurements to quantify long-term changes in fjords and coastal waters. We find a profound change in the vertical distribution of water masses, with AW shoaling >60 m and PW thinning >50 m since early 2000’s. The properties of these waters have also changed. AW is now 1 °C warmer and the salinity of surface waters and PW are 1.8 and 0.68 lower, respectively. The AW changes have substantially weakened stratification south of ~74°N, indicating increased accessibility of heat and potentially nutrients associated with AW. The Atlantification earlier reported for the eastern Fram Strait and Barents Sea region has also propagated to the NEGS. The increased presence of AW, is an important driver for regional change leading to a likely shift in ecosystem structure and function.

This study traces dissolved organic matter (DOM) in different water masses of the Arctic Ocean and its effect on the distributions of trace elements (TEs; Fe, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd) using fluorescent properties of DOM and the terrigenous biomarker lignin. The Nansen, Amundsen, and Makarov Basins were characterized by the influence of Atlantic water and the fluvial discharge of the Siberian rivers with high concentrations of terrigenous DOM (tDOM). The Canada Basin and the Chukchi Sea were characterized by Pacific water, modified through contact with productive shelf sediments with elevated levels of marine DOM. Within the surface layer of the Beaufort Gyre, meteoric water (river water and precipitation) was characterized by low concentrations of lignin and terrigenous DOM fluorescence proxies as DOM is removed during freezing. High-resolution in situ fluorescence profiles revealed that DOM distribution closely followed isopycnals, indicating the strong influence of sea-ice formation and melt, which was also reflected in strong correlations between DOM fluorescence and brine contributions. The relationship of DOM and hydrography to TEs showed that terrigenous and marine DOM were likely carriers of dissolved Fe, Ni, Cu from the Eurasian shelves into the central Arctic Ocean. Chukchi shelf sediments were important sources of dCd, dZn, and dNi, as well as marine ligands that bind and carry these TEs offshore within the upper halocline (UHC) in the Canada Basin. Our data suggest that tDOM components represent stronger ligands relative to marine DOM components, potentially facilitating the long-range transport of TE to the North Atlantic. Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) can serve as an additional substrate for organic micropollutant (OMP) degrading bacteria, thus influencing OMP biodegradation in aquatic systems. DOM biodegradation depends on the OMP degrader's ability to grow on different DOM constituents, and on its capability to compete for DOM constituents against the rest of the resident aquatic microbial community. This study aimed to investigate the growth of a model OMP degrader strain, Novosphingobium sp. KN65.2 (assumed specialist), isolated for its ability to mineralize carbofuran, on thirteen DOM constituents; compare its metabolic capabilities to those of a common freshwater strain (Pseudomonas fluorescens sp. P17) (generalist); and to evaluate competition for specific compounds. Growth experiments were carried out in pure- and mixed culture batch experiments. The DOM constituents tested included aromatic amino acids and a range of phenolic acids (lignin derivatives). The OMP degrader could biodegrade approximately half of the tested compounds. It showed a high specialization for substrates containing a hydroxyl-group in the para-position of the primary aromatic ring substituent. However, its broad substrate range enabled the strain to grow on the same number of auxiliary substrates as the generalist. Moreover, the OMP degrader was able to successfully compete against the generalist for the biodegradation of one (4-hydroxybenzaldehyde) out of three substrates (4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, L-tyrosine), which were biodegraded by both strains. The study results provide insight on the substrate specificity of a model OMP degrader, which can inform development of modeling frameworks investigating the influence of DOM on OMP biodegradation.

Global warming accelerates melting of glaciers and increases the supply of meltwater and associated inorganic particles, nutrients, and organic matter to adjacent coastal seas, but the ecosystem impact is poorly resolved and quantified. When meltwater is delivered by glacial rivers, the potential impact could be a reduction in light and nutrient availability for primary producers while supplying allochthonous carbon for heterotrophic processes, thereby tipping the net community metabolism toward heterotrophy. To test this hypothesis, we determined physical and biogeochemical parameters along a 110-km fjord transect in NE Greenland fjord, impacted by glacial meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet. The meltwater is delivered from glacier-fed river outlets in the inner parts of the fjord, creating a gradient in salinity and turbidity. The planktonic primary production was low, 20-45 mg C m-2 d-1, in the more turbid inner half of the fjord, increasing 10-fold to around 350 mg C m-2 d-1 in the shelf waters outside the fjord. Plankton community metabolism was measured at three stations, which displayed a transition from net heterotrophy in the inner fjord to net autotrophy in the coastal shelf waters. Respiration was significantly correlated to turbidity, with a 10-fold increase in the inner turbid part of the fjord. We estimated the changes in meltwater input and sea ice coverage in the area for the last 60 y. The long-term trend and the observed effects demonstrated the importance of freshwater runoff as a key driver of coastal ecosystem change in the Arctic with potential negative consequences for coastal productivity.
