In this research, we present the results of analyzing the technical feasibility of an old invention by Henry Muncaster from the perspective of mechanical engineering, specifically focusing on the resistance of materials. The invention is a two-cylinder steam engine with a parallel motion crosshead, for which plans were published in the Model Engineer magazine in 1957. This complex device, composed of 76 elements and lacking descriptive information, has been the subject of a recent article that illustrated its design through the engineering drawing discipline and a 3D CAD model. To provide reliable information and conduct a comprehensive study of its technical feasibility, an extensive linear static analysis was performed. This analysis considered two critical positions of the piston inside the cylinder: upper dead center and lower dead center. We determined the optimal range of working pressures necessary to achieve a safety factor within the optimal design range of two to four. The results include von Mises stresses, displacements, and safety factor distributions, confirming that the optimal working pressure range for steam intake is between 1.885 and 3.550 MPa. This paper explores a historical innovation created by Henry Muncaster: a stationary steam engine featuring a single-cylinder horizontal design with a crosshead trunk guide. Through the application of engineering graphics techniques, we have elucidated the functioning of this invention by developing a 3D CAD model based on the original drawings published in Model Engineer magazine in 1957. However, the geometric modeling process faced challenges due to missing and erroneous dimensions for several components. Consequently, dimensional, geometric, and movement constraints were applied to ensure the coherence and functionality of the 3D CAD model, alongside conducting an interference analysis. Ultimately, the proper alignment of the cylinder and crosshead was ascertained, which is crucial for maintaining uniform forces and motions within the steam engine. This article presents an investigation into a historical invention consisting of a stationary steam engine designed by Henry Muncaster: a two-cylinder entablature steam engine with parallel motion crosshead. The present interdisciplinary research, based on the theoretical and methodological concepts of engineering drawing and computer-aided design, has allowed us to understand the operation of this invention from the 3D CAD model of the invention obtained thanks to the original drawings published in the magazine Model Engineer in 1957 and reproduced in 2017, since there is no descriptive information related to the invention. However, there have been drawbacks in the geometric modeling process since the dimensions of some components did not exist and in other cases they were erroneous. For this reason, dimensional, geometric and movement constraints (degrees of freedom) had to be applied so that said 3D CAD model would be coherent and functional, and an interference analysis also had to be performed. Finally, the existing symmetry in the arrangement of the cylinders and the crosshead has been discovered, it being essential to guarantee that the forces and movements are uniform on both sides of the steam engine, and allowing the work to be carried out in a more balanced manner by reducing vibrations and improving the overall efficiency of the invention. Under the dual‐carbon goal, due to the long‐term operation of thermal power units under wide load and frequent fluctuating load after heat supply transformation, the dynamic process of subcritical units is modeled, and a frequency modulation optimization technology based on frequency signal accuracy is proposed to ensure the accuracy of the speed signal and improve the qualification rate of primary frequency modulation action. At the same time, the frequency regulation technology of steam engine side control optimization under boundary working conditions is proposed, so as to realize the sensitivity and rapidity of the digital electric hydraulic control system. The coordination optimization technology under boundary working conditions is proposed, and the primary frequency regulation performance of the unit is improved through a series of optimization adjustments. The silicon carbide fiber-reinforced silicon carbide matrix (SiC/SiC), ceramic matrix composite (CMC) and nickel-based superalloy GH4169 can be utilized in high-temperature applications due to their high-temperature performance. The SiC/SiC composites are commonly used in turbine outer rings, where they encounter friction and wear against the turbine blades. This high-speed rubbing occurs frequently in aircraft engines and steam turbines. To investigate the tribological behavior of these materials, rubbing experiments were conducted between the SiC/SiC and the GH4169 superalloy. The experiments involved varying the blade tip speeds ranging from 100 m/s to 350 m/s and incursion rates from 5 μm/s to 50 μm/s at room temperature. Additionally, experiments were conducted at high temperatures to compare the tribological behavior under ambient conditions. The results indicated that the GH4169 superalloy exhibited abrasive furrow wear during rubbing at both room temperature and high temperature. Furthermore, at elevated temperatures, some of the GH4169 superalloy adhered to the surface of the SiC/SiC. The analysis of the experiments conducted at ambient temperatures revealed that the friction coefficient increased with higher blade tip velocities (100~350 m/s). However, the coefficient was lower at high temperatures compared to room temperature. Furthermore, significant temperature increases were observed during rubbing at room temperature, whereas minimal temperature changes were detected on the rubbing surface at high temperatures. A significant difference test is used to evaluate certain treatments on the sample in two different observation periods. One of the commonly used software is SPSS which is used to analyze data which helps researchers in calculating data so that it can be completed quickly. However, there are still many students and researchers who are not experts in calculating data using SPSS software, especially significant difference tests. This article aims to provide a step-by-step guide in calculating data using SPSS for statistical requirements and significant difference tests. To understand the calculations well using SPSS, we demonstrate the requirements tests (i.e., normality and homogeneity tests), parametric significant difference tests (i.e., One Sample ttest, Paired sample t-test, and Independent Sample t-test), and non-parametric (i.e., Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney test). We also added and demonstrated the steps for calculating data in the field of education with the variables analyzed being differences in student learning outcomes. We used the data when delivering the steam engine concept to students, showing how statistical calculation can understand students' comprehension. The condition assessment of Industrial Heritage machinery in operation is an open research subject of utmost importance for defining conservation and maintenance plans. The present work approaches this issue by proposing the study of Industrial Heritage machinery that includes the assessment of substrates, coatings, lubricants and operating mechanisms by applying analytical techniques currently used for heritage studies together with techniques employed in condition monitoring of modern machinery. An early 20th century steam engine from the Vale de Milhaços Gunpowder Factory (Portugal), in operation for demonstration purposes, was selected as a case study. The engine metallic alloys and coatings were studied by XRF and Raman spectroscopies, and the main properties of lubricants studied according to EN ISO and ASTM standard tests. Metallic particles present in the oil due to wear were assessed by XRF. The mechanisms were examined by gamma radiography, magnetoscopy, thermography and vibrational analysis. Data showed the use of distinct alloys according to the engine components' function similar to those reported for the same period. Green copper phthalocyanine and toluidine red identified as coatings' pigments are typical from the late 20th century and thus ascribed to a previous repair. The properties of the fresh and used lubricants are slightly different but without evidence of a significant alteration that could endanger the machine's functioning. However, the presence of metallic particles in the oil suggested the existence of wear phenomena. The engine's operating speed (51 rpm) and the vapour temperature (≈154 °C) attained inside the cylinder were indirectly determined. The presence of cracks on the engine structure was assessed, and possible faults that can imperil the engine functioning were analysed. The Science Museum has in its East Hall one of the finest collections of steam engines anywhere. The collection has traditionally been interpreted in formal taxonomical terms. However, as the display scheme has become physically fragmented, and the museum's relationship with its visitors has been assessed in new ways, so new approaches to interpreting the collection have been sought. The primary and secondary source review underpinning development of a revised gallery scheme for the East Hall suggested the existence of an 'imaginarium of steam', a body of historic material illustrating how the steam engine exerted an imaginative hold on those who built, worked with, and observed it. The steam engine was as much a symbolic and imaginative machine as it was a tangible one. This is reflected in a rich range of sources, stretching far beyond the technical sources so traditionally and closely identified with the engine. This paper will outline some of these primary sources with particular reference to the museum's collection and other appropriate material culture, and attempt to identify some of their shared characteristics, which together form the imaginarium. Developer-funded archaeological investigations were undertaken by Archaeological Research Services Ltd within Hendon Sidings Enterprise Zone at the Port of Sunderland in March 2021 and during the summer and autumn of 2022, prior to the commencement of engineering works including alterations to existing access routes and reprofiling of the area. The works were undertaken on behalf of Esh Construction. Evaluation trenching in 2021 identified the remains of the well-preserved roundhouse and a portion of the associated turntable, which was then fully exposed during subsequent open-area excavation. The work revealed the iron fittings associated with the mechanical structures of the turntable pit, in addition to inspection pits for engines and steam railcars, culverts, three well-preserved 'straight' engine sheds and associated structures. Unlike the roundhouse, thought to have been demolished in the 1960s, the engine sheds underwent reconstruction and refurbishment to accommodate the larger diesel engines in the mid- to late 20th century. Many of the structures associated with the western engine sheds similarly date to around this time, although some of the sandstone foundations and boundary walls appeared to be of a later date and had not been subjected to the same level of dieselisation as other areas of the sheds. The missionaries' engagement with science and technology in colonial Kenya (1887–1963) is evidentially seen through the use of the post-industrial revolution's breakthroughs of the eighteenth century, which included: advancement in science and mass production, steam engines, and the rise of digital technology. The tendency to rely heavily on post-industrial innovations and inventions were critical in fast-tracking their missiological discourses, which included scriptural translations, publishing, and the use of printing machines. These were critical in generating instructional materials and especially the Bible, which was produced in the local indigenous languages by 1952, and by encouraging technical-science education after primary school, among other methods. Although the concept of science and technology is largely attributed to the scientific breakthroughs of the twenty-first century, we argue that this concept was also evident in both the African indigenous society and in the missionary era. The widespread use of the phrase 'science and technology' is further seen in the missionary enterprises since they founded or supported the establishment of technical schools that offered electrical engineering, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, mechanical engineering, and training in medicine and the establishment of dispensaries and hospitals, among other relevant activities. Methodologically, the research article endeavours to review the European missionary societies, especially the Protestant wing, in its aim to understand their engagement with science and technology, and to determine if there conflict between Western science and the indigenous systems. Introducing the knowledge of steam engines was one of the primary tasks of the Westernization Movement. The Kiangnan Arsenal's translations Qiji faren 汽機發軔, Qiji biyi 汽機必以, Qiji xinzhi 汽機新制, Bingchuan qiji 兵船汽機, and Qiji Zhongxi mingmu biao 汽機中西名目表 are the most complete and comprehensive introductions to knowledge regarding steam engines produced in the late Qing Dynasty. They were completed by Alexander Wylie (1815-1887), Xu Shou 徐壽 (1818-1884), John Fryer (1839-1928), Xu Jianyin 徐建寅 (1845-1901) and Hua Beiyu華備鈺 (?-?) respectively. In particular, the original texts of Qiji faren and Bingchuan qiji, which were textbooks for the officers of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, advance the view that having a strong army is better than being a rich country. The Qiji biyi is rich in content, covering all kinds of steam engines used in ships, trains, agriculture and industry. As for the Qiji xinzhi, its title is slightly misleading in that there is no new content. The Qiji Zhongxi mingmu biao, which provides a set of naming guidelines for Chinese steam engine terms, was based on Xu Shou's "Qiji mingming shuo 汽機命名說.". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper estimates a measure of coal price for all NUTS3 Italian provinces between 1861 and 1911. Italy was a latecomer country and its late industrialization was characterized by the absence of coal in a time when the steam engine powered factory work. The new variable accounts for the main input factor of manufacturing production during that period in which the Italian economy registered a long-term growth of GDP and an increase in its industrial activity. The measure allows to speculate on the importance of coal for Italian industrialization and on the origins of the North–South divide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work discusses a study of the disruptive design of a thermal power plant implemented by several power units coupled in cascade aiming at increase the heat utilizations factor. Thus, the study addresses the phases prior to the implementation of a prototype of a heat‐to‐work converter and analyzes the performance using a vacuum carried out by cooling. Vacuums have been used in steam engines according to open processes with changes of state for several centuries. In the case under study, a disruptive technique is proposed by which a vacuum is used in closed processes without a change of phase. Likewise, a plant structure based on the cascading coupling of three thermal cycles is designed to achieve a high heat utilization factor. Although the average thermal efficiency obtained in this study is 59.8 for air and 66.7 for helium as working fluids, the most relevant criterion deals with plant performance, for which the heat utilization factor surpasses 85% for air and 96% for helium as a working fluid. Despite the unprecedentedly high heat utilization factor, this study indicates some potential to further increase the heat utilization factor because the power plant can be implemented using heat regeneration strategies. This article offers an analysis, from the mechanical engineering viewpoint, of an invention by Henry Muncaster from 1912: the two-cylinder compound vertical steam engine with speed control. This is an invention with a large number of components (106) that was used as an engine in boats and railways. The ultimate objective of this investigation was to determine the operating conditions (maximum pressures of water vapor in the admission of high- and low-pressure cylinders) according to the criteria of resistance of materials since there is no information about this. Therefore, two critical operating conditions were simulated that resemble the start-up of the machine (flywheel locked as the most unfavorable situation) in order to determine those operating conditions that ensure both its safety and optimal operation. For this, a static linear analysis based on the finite element method (FEM) of the 3D CAD model was carried out under real operating conditions, according to the criteria of resistance of materials, using the Autodesk Inventor Nastran 2023 software. The results of the static linear analysis (von Mises stress, displacement and safety factor) confirmed the maximum values of the vapor pressure in the admission of the cylinders: 0.3 MPa on the high-pressure piston plunger and 0.15 MPa on the low-pressure piston plunger. Quantum computing is the latest revolution in computing and will probably come to be seen as an advance as important as the steam engine or the information society. In the last few decades, our understanding of quantum computers has expanded and multiple efforts have been made to create languages, libraries, tools, and environments to facilitate their programming. Nonetheless, quantum computers are complex systems at the bottom of a stack of layers that programmers need to understand. Hence, efforts towards creating quantum programming languages and computing environments that can abstract low-level technology details have become crucial steps to achieve a useful quantum computing technology. However, most of these environments still lack many of the features that would be desirable, such as those outlined in The Talavera Manifesto for Quantum Software Engineering and Programming. For advancing quantum computing, we will need to develop quantum software engineering techniques and tools to ensure the feasibility of this new type of quantum software. To contribute to this goal, this paper provides a review of the main quantum software components and platforms. The history of fishing has often been written from a local or regional perspective. There has gradually been a shift where fishing has been studied from a broader international perspective. Nevertheless, large international overviews need detailed studies of individual ports in a similar way as studies of individual ports benefit from the international perspective. The introduction of steam-powered fishing vessels in Scandinavia has often been regarded as an attempt to imitate fishing in Great Britain. However, a closer study of the Scandinavian countries shows that this does not match, for example, the Norwegian steam fishing fleet. Scandinavia's two main fishing ports with steam-powered fishing vessels, Ålesund in Norway and Gothenburg in Sweden, show great differences. Gothenburg is the place that has the most similarities with the large British fishing ports. Steam-powered fishing vessels played a modest role in Danish fishing. On the other hand, when it comes to the introduction of engines, the Danish fishery was the leader. However, it would take more than 30 years from the first functionable engines around the turn of the twentieth century before motor-driven fishing vessels could begin to compete with steam-powered fishing vessels. The problems of financing the new technology are emphasized in the article. Government loans were important in many countries, but much research is still needed to clarify the proportion that was government-financed and how much other financial actors contributed. Flow boiling within conventional, mini and micro-scale channels is encountered in a wide range of engineering applications such as nuclear reactors, steam engines and cooling of electronic devices. Due to the high complexity and importance of the boiling process, several numerical and experimental investigations have been conducted for the better understanding of the underpinned physics and heat transfer characteristics. One of the most widely used numerical approaches that can analyse such phenomena is the Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid method in conjunction with the RPI model. However, according to the current state-of-the-art methods this modelling approach heavily relies on empirical closure relationships derived for conventional channels, limiting its applicability to mini- and micro-scale channels. The present paper aims to give further insights into the applicability of this modelling approach for non-conventional channels. For this purpose, a numerical investigation utilising the Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model and the RPI wall heat flux partitioning model in OpenFOAM 8.0 is conducted. Initially the parameters comprising the empirical closure relationships used in the RPI sub-models are tuned against the DEBORA experiments on conventional channels, through an extensive sensitivity analysis. In the second part of the investigation, numerical simulations against flow boiling experiments within micro-channels are performed, utilising the previously optimised and validated model setup. Furthermore the importance of including a bubble coalescence and break-up sub-model to capture parameters such as the radial velocity profiles, is also illustrated. However, when the optimal model setup, in conventional tubes, is used against micro-channel experiments, the need to develop new correlations from data obtained from mini and micro-scale channel studies, not from experimental data on conventional channels, is revealed. Beam engines introduced America to the steam age and powered the nation's progress for much of the 19th century, spearheading the navigation of its inland waterways, powering its mills and manufacturing industry, enabling the mining of its deep mineral resources, and supplying its growing cities with water. Development of the beam engine in America lagged that in Britain and Europe but followed a similar evolution until its displacement by other forms of steam engine and by electricity at the end of the 19th century. Development started with the introduction of America's first beam engine, imported from Britain in 1755, progressed through the rapid growth of American-built engines, and culminated in the mid- to late-19th century in the metropolitan waterworks of the American Midwest and East, in the deep mines of the American West, and in the paddle steamers that first brought America together. In this paper, the analysis of the design of the single-cylinder steam engine of the Grasshopper beam designed by Henry Muncaster in 1912 is shown. This engine was incorporated into ships and railways and it was published in the Model Engineer journal in 1957. It shows great complexity due to its ability to transform reciprocating movement into rotary movement and its high number of elements (more than 150). To this end, a study of computer-aided engineering (CAE) was carried out using the software Autodesk Inventor Nastran, consisting of a linear static analysis using the finite element method (FEM) of the 3D CAD model under real operating conditions in order to learn if it was well designed, according to material resistance criteria. The assembly is analyzed in the two most unfavorable situations in order to determine the von Mises stresses, the displacements and the safety coefficient distributions. Has development critique run out of steam? While a certain impasse can be noted between post-development theorists and development ethnographers, this article suggests to re-start the steam engine of development critique by attending to the "irony of development", i.e. ironic predicaments that explain the sustenance of the development industry despite its persistent failures to live up to its aspirations. How one reads this "irony of successful failure" amounts to a question of how to practise critique, what position the critic takes and what ironic stances the critic intones. While post-development operates an external critique, development ethnographers practise an internal one. I propose to transform the latter into an immanent critique, which identifies "moral excess" as the constitutive function of the ironic predicaments inside the global development apparatus. This study examines the effect of the labour market regulations on Greek tourism industry performance. The tourism industry, the steam engine of the Greek economy, always drives to enhance efforts to reach further savings in operating costs. However, the labour regulations that influence the tourism sector's ability to adjust costs have not been thoroughly investigated. We present a novel methodology that permits the evaluation of the effect of labour market regulations on technical and allocative efficiency in one step. The empirical results demonstrate the complexity of the relationship between labour regulations and efficiency. Labour market liberalization is associated with improvements in allocative efficiency but may have opposite effects on technical efficiency. Over the history of economic development, natural resources have always played an essential role. For instance, during the first Industrial Revolution steam engine greatly increased the efficiency of production: with the help of the combustion of black coal, and later oil, the worth of natural resources from the Earth was never devalued. For every economic entity, immense development at the beginning of the process seems inevitable, and China's economic development follows a similar trajectory, yet with the continuing development, environmental issues are becoming non-negligible anymore in China, which could potentially drag and slow down overall economic progress.
