X-ray continuum emission of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may be reflected by circumnuclear dusty tori, producing prominent fluorescence iron lines at X-ray frequencies. Here we discuss the broad-band emission of three radio-loud AGN belonging to the class of compact symmetric objects (CSOs), with detected narrow Fe\,K$\alpha$ lines. CSOs have newly-born radio jets, forming compact radio lobes with projected linear sizes of the order of a few to hundreds of parsecs. We model the radio--to--$\gamma$-ray spectra of compact lobes in {J1407+2827}, J1511+0518, and {J2022+6137}, which are among the nearest and the youngest CSOs known to date, and are characterized by an intrinsic X-ray absorbing column density of $N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}$\,cm$^{-2}$. In addition to the archival data, we analyze the newly acquired \chandra\ X-ray Observatory and Sub-Millimeter Array (SMA) observations, and also refine the $\gamma$-ray upper limits from the \fermi\ Large Area Telescope (LAT) monitoring. The new \chandra\ data exclude the presence of the extended X-ray emission components on scales larger than $1.5^{\prime \prime}$. The SMA data unveil a correlation of the spectral index of the electron distribution in the lobes and $N_{\rm H}$, which can explain the $\gamma$-ray quietness of heavily obscured CSOs. Based on our modeling, we argue that the inverse-Compton emission of compact radio lobes may account for the intrinsic X-ray continuum in all these sources. In every proposed unification scheme for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), an integral element is the presence of circumnuclear dust arranged in torus-like structures. A crucial model parameter in this context is the covering factor (CF), defined as the ratio between the infrared luminosity of the dusty torus $L_{\rm IR}$, and the accretion disk bolometric luminosity $L_{\rm agn}$. Our study aims to determine whether CF evolution is genuine or if selection effects significantly influence it. Based on cross-matched multiwavelength photometrical data from the five major surveys (SDSS, GALEX, UKIDSS, WISE, SPITZER), a sample of almost 2,000 quasars was derived. The main parameters of quasars, such as black hole masses and the Eddington ratios, were calculated based on the spectroscopic data. The data were divided into two redshift bins: Low-$z$ (redshift ~1) and High-$z$ (redshift ~2) quasars. We identified an issue with the accuracy of the WISE W4 filter. Whenever feasible, it is recommended to utilize SPITZER MIPS 24 $\mu$m data. The calculated median CF values for the highest quality SPITZER data are comparable within errors $\log$ CF$_{\textrm{low}-z} = -0.19\pm 0.11$ and $\log$ CF$_{\textrm{high}-z}= -0.18\pm 0.11$. The Efron & Petrosian test confirmed the presence of luminosity evolution with redshift for both $L_{\rm IR}$ and $L_{\rm agn}$. Both the Low-$z$ and High-$z$ samples exhibit a similar correlation between $L_{\rm agn}$ and $L_{\rm IR}$. No discernible evolution of the CF was observed in the subsample of quasars with high SMBH mass bin or high luminosities. The relationship between $L_{\rm IR}$ and $L_{\rm agn}$ deviates slightly from the expected 1:1 scaling. We analyze radio continuum emission of early-type galaxies with dynamical measurements of central super-massive black hole (SMBH) masses, and well-characterized large-scale environments, but regardless on the exact level of the nuclear activity. The 1.4 GHz radio fluxes collected with $\sim$arcmin resolution for 62 nearby targets (distances $\lesssim$ 153 Mpc), correspond to low and very low monochromatic luminosities $L_{\rm r} \sim 10^{35} - 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We quantify possible correlations between the radio properties with the main parameters of supermassive black holes, host galaxies, and hot gaseous halos, finding a general bimodality in the radio luminosity distribution, with the borderline between ``radio-bright'' and ``radio-dim'' populations $\log L_{\rm r} / L_{\rm Edd} \simeq -8.5$. We analyze the far-infrared data for the targets, finding that all radio-bright sources, and over a half of radio-dim ones, are over-luminous in radio with respect to the far-infrared--radio correlation. High-resolution radio maps reveal that the overwhelming majority of radio-dim sources are unresolved on arcsecond scale, while the bulk of radio-bright sources display extended jets and lobes of low- and intermediate-power radio galaxies; those jets dominate radio emission of radio-bright objects. Regarding the origin of the radio emission of radio-dim sources, we discuss the two main possibilities. One is the ADAF model, in which the radio and the nuclear X-ray radiative outputs at very low accretion rates, are both dominated by unresolved jets. The other possibility is that the radio-dim sources, unlike the radio-bright ones, are characterized by low values of SMBH spins, so that their radio emission is not related to the jets, but instead is due to a combination of starforming processes and past nuclear outbursts., Comment: revised version accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The study of short-term variability properties in AGN jets has the potential to shed light on their particle acceleration and emission mechanisms. We report results from a four-day coordinated multi-wavelength campaign on the highly-peaked blazar (HBL) Mkn 421 in 2019 January. We obtained X-ray data from AstroSAT, BVRI photometry with the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT), and TeV data from FACT to explore short-term multi-wavelength variability in this HBL. The X-ray continuum is rapidly variable on time-scales of tens of ks. Fractional variability amplitude increases with energy across the synchrotron hump, consistent with previous studies; we interpret this observation in the context of a model with multiple cells whose emission spectra contain cutoffs that follow a power-law distribution. We also performed time-averaged and time-resolved (time-scales of 6 ks) spectral fits; a broken power-law model fits all spectra well; time-resolved spectral fitting reveals the usual hardening when brightening behaviour. Intra-X-ray cross correlations yield evidence for the 0.6-0.8 keV band to likely lead the other bands by an average of 4.6 +- 2.6 ks, but only during the first half of the observation. The source displayed minimal night-to-night variability at all wavebands thus precluding significant interband correlations during our campaign. We propose a simple analytical jet model of magnetic jets, in which radially-averaged profiles of main physical quantities are obtained based on conservation laws and some results of published GRMHD jet simulations. We take into account conversion of the magnetic energy flux to bulk acceleration in jets formed around rotating black holes assuming the mass continuity equation and constant jet power, which leads to the Bernoulli equation. For assumed profiles of the bulk Lorentz factor and the radius, this gives us the profile of the toroidal magnetic field component along the jet. We then consider the case where the poloidal field component is connected to a rotating black hole surrounded by an accretion disc. Our formalism then recovers the standard formula for the power extracted from a rotating black hole. We find that the poloidal field strength dominates over the toroidal one in the comoving frame up to large distances, which means that jets should be more stable to current-driven kink modes. The resulting magnetic field profiles can then be used to calculate the jet synchrotron emission., Comment: MNRAS, Letters, in press

Astrophysical jets, launched from the immediate vicinity of accreting black holes, carry away large amounts of power in a form of bulk kinetic energy of jet particles and electromagnetic flux. Here we consider a simple analytical model for relativistic jets at larger distances from their launching sites, assuming a cylindrical axisymmetric geometry with a radial velocity shear, and purely toroidal magnetic field. We argue that, as long as the jet plasma is in magnetohydrostatic equilibrium, such outflows tend to be particle dominated, i.e. the ratio of the electromagnetic to particle energy flux, integrated over the jet cross-sectional area, is typically below unity, $\sigma < 1$. At the same time, for particular magnetic and radial velocity profiles, magnetic pressure may still dominate over particle pressure for certain ranges of the jet radius, i.e. the local jet plasma parameter $\beta_{pl} < 1$, and this may be relevant in the context of particle acceleration and production of high-energy emission in such systems. The jet magnetization parameter can be elevated up to the modest values $\sigma \lesssim \mathcal{O}(10)$ only in the case of extreme gradients or discontinuities in the gaseous pressure, and a significantly suppressed velocity shear. Such configurations, which consist of a narrow, unmagnetized jet spine surrounded by an extended, force-free layer, may require an additional poloidal field component to stabilize them against current-driven oscillations, but even this will not elevate substantially their $\sigma$ parameter., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, in press

We present the results of variability power spectral density (PSD) analysis using multiwavelength radio to GeV\,$\gamma$-ray light curves covering decades/years to days/minutes timescales for the blazars 3C 279 and PKS 1510-089. The PSDs are modeled as single power-laws, and the best-fit spectral shape is derived using the `power spectral response' method. With more than ten years of data obtained with weekly/daily sampling intervals, most of the PSDs cover ~2-4 decades in temporal frequency; moreover, in the optical band, the PSDs cover ~6 decades for 3C 279 due to the availability of intranight light curves. Our main results are the following: (1) on timescales ranging from decades to days, the synchrotron and the inverse Compton spectral components, in general, exhibit red-noise (slope ~2) and flicker-noise (slope ~1) type variability, respectively; (2) the slopes of $\gamma$-ray variability PSDs obtained using a 3-hr integration bin and a 3-weeks total duration exhibit a range between ~1.4 and ~2.0 (mean slope = 1.60$\pm$0.70), consistent within errors with the slope on longer timescales; (3) comparisons of fractional variability indicate more power on timescales $\leq$100\, days at $\gamma$-ray frequencies as compared to longer wavelengths, in general (except between $\gamma$-ray and optical frequencies for PKS 1510$-$089); (4) the normalization of intranight optical PSDs for 3C\,279 appears to be a simple extrapolation from longer timescales, indicating a continuous (single) process driving the variability at optical wavelengths; (5) the emission at optical/infrared wavelengths may involve a combination of disk and jet processes for PKS\,1510$-$089., Comment: ApJ accepted. We present a model for the broadband radio-to-$\gamma$-ray spectral energy distribution of the compact radio source, PKS 1718-649. Because of its young age (100 years) and proximity ($z=0.014$), PKS 1718-649 offers a unique opportunity to study nuclear conditions and the jet/host galaxy feedback process at the time of an initial radio jet expansion. PKS 1718-649 is one of a handful of young radio jets with $\gamma$-ray emission confirmed with the Fermi/LAT detector. We show that this $\gamma$-ray emission can be successfully explained by Inverse Compton scattering of the ultraviolet photons, presumably from an accretion flow, off non-thermal electrons in the expanding radio lobes. The origin of the X-ray emission in PKS 1718-649 is more elusive. While Inverse Compton scattering of the infrared photons emitted by a cold gas in the vicinity of the expanding radio lobes contributes significantly to the X-ray band, the data require that an additional X-ray emission mechanism is at work, e.g. a weak X-ray corona or a radiatively inefficient accretion flow, expected from a LINER type nucleus such as that of PKS 1718-649. We find that the jet in PKS 1718-649 has low power, $L_j \simeq 2.2 \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and expands in an environment with density $n_0 \simeq 20$ cm$^{-3}$. The inferred mass accretion rate and gas mass reservoir within 50-100 pc are consistent with estimates from the literature obtained by tracing molecular gas in the innermost region of the host galaxy with SINFONI and ALMA., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, published in ApJ

The dynamical evolution and radiative properties of luminous radio galaxies and quasars of the FRII type, are well understood. As a result, through the use of detailed modeling of the observed radio emission of such sources, one can estimate various physical parameters of the systems, including the density of the ambient medium into which the radio structure evolves. This, however, requires rather comprehensive observational information, i.e. sampling the broad-band radio continua of the targets at several frequencies, and imaging their radio structures with high resolution. Such observations are, on the other hand, not always available, especially for high-redshift objects. Here we analyze the best-fit values of the source physical parameters, derived from an extensive modeling of the largest currently available sample of FRII radio sources, for which good-quality multi-wavelength radio flux measurements could be collected. In the analyzed dataset, we notice a significant and non-obvious correlation between the spectral index of the non-thermal radio emission continuum, and density of the ambient medium. We derive the corresponding correlation parameters, and quantify the intrinsic scatter by means of Bayesian analysis. We propose that the discovered correlation could be used as a cosmological tool to estimate the density of ambient medium for large samples of distant radio galaxies. Our method does not require any detailed modeling of individual sources, and relies on limited observational information, namely the slope of the radio continuum between the rest-frame frequencies 0.4GHz and 5GHz, possibly combined with the total linear size of the radio structure., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Here we re-analyze the archival {\it Chandra} data for the central parts of the Centaurus\,A radio galaxy, aiming for a systematic investigation of the X-ray emission associated with the inner radio lobes in the system, and their immediate surroundings. In particular, we focus on four distinct features characterized by the soft excess with respect to the adjacent fields. Those include the two regions located at kpc distances from the nucleus to the West and East, the extended bow-shock structure to the South, and a fragment of a thin arc North from the center. The selected North, West, and South features coincide with the edges of the radio lobes, while the East structure is seemingly displaced from the radio-emitting plasma. Our X-ray spectral analysis reveals (i) a power-law emission component with photon index $\Gamma \sim 2$ in the North, East, and South regions, and (ii) a dense (number density $\sim 0.3$\,cm$^{-3}$) and relatively cold (temperature $\sim 0.2$\,keV) gas in the East and West regions. The power-law emission is consistent with the synchrotron continuum generated at the edges of the radio structure, and implies that the efficiency of the electron acceleration at the terminal bow-shock does not vary dramatically over the inner lobes' extension. The presence of gaseous condensations, on the other hand, could possibly be understood in terms of a massive outflow from the central regions of the galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a comprehensive analysis of Chandra X-ray observations of 15 young radio quasars at redshifts $4.5 < z < 5.0$. All sources are detected in the $0.5-7.0$ keV energy band. Emission spectra are extracted, and the average photon index for the sample is measured to be $1.5\pm0.1$. Unabsorbed rest-frame $2-10$ keV luminosities are found to range between $(0.5-23.2) \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The optical-X-ray power-law spectral index $\alpha_{ox}$ is calculated for each source using optical/UV data available in the literature. The $\alpha_{ox}$-UV relationship is compared with other quasar surveys, and an anticorrelation is observed that agrees with independent estimates. Rest-frame radio and X-ray luminosities are established for the sample, and a correlation between the luminosities is detected. These multiwavelength results reinforce a lack of spectral evolution for quasars over a broad redshift range. We additionally identify three quasars from our multiwavelength analysis that are statistically significant outliers, with one source being a Compton-thick candidate in the early universe, and discuss each in detail., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 13 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables

We present the results of flux density, spectral index, and polarization intra-night monitoring studies of a sample of eight optically bright blazars, carried out by employing several small to moderate aperture (0.4\,m to 1.5\,m diameter) telescopes fitted with CCDs and polarimeters located in Europe, India, and Japan. The duty cycle of flux variability for the targets is found to be $\sim 45$ percent, similar to that reported in earlier studies. The computed two-point spectral indices are found to be between 0.65 to 1.87 for our sample, comprised of low- and intermediate frequency peaked blazars, with one exception; they are also found to be statistically variable for about half the instances where `confirmed' variability is detected in flux density. In the analysis of the spectral evolution of the targets on hourly timescale, a counter-clockwise loop (soft-lagging) is noted in the flux-spectral index plane on two occasions, and in one case a clear spectral flattening with the decreasing flux is observed. In our data set, we also observe a variety of flux-polarization degree variability patterns, including instances with a relatively straightforward anti-correlation, correlation, or counter-clockwise looping. These changes are typically reflected in the flux-polarization angle plane: the anti-correlation between the flux and polarization degree is accompanied by an anti-correlation between the polarization angle and flux, while the counter-clockwise flux-PD looping behaviour is accompanied by a clockwise looping in the flux-polarization angle representation. We present an optical variability study of 44 newly identified blazar candidates behind the Magellanic Clouds, including 27 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 17 BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs). All objects in the sample possess high photometric accuracy and irregularly sampled optical light curves (LCs) in I filter from the long-term monitoring conducted by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. We investigated the variability properties to look for blazar-like characteristics and to analyze the long-term behaviour. We analyzed the LCs with the Lomb-Scargle periodogram to construct power spectral densities (PSDs), found breaks for several objects, and linked them with accretion disk properties. In this way we constrained the black hole (BH) masses of 18 FSRQs to lie within the range $8.18\leq\log (M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot)\leq 10.84$, assuming a wide range of possible BH spins. By estimating the bolometric luminosities, we applied the fundamental plane of active galactic nuclei variability as an independent estimate, resulting in $8.4\leq\log (M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot)\leq 9.6$, with a mean error of 0.3. Many of the objects have very steep PSDs, with high frequency spectral index in the range $3-7$. An alternative attempt to classify the LCs was made using the Hurst exponent, $H$, and the $\mathcal{A}-\mathcal{T}$ plane. Two FSRQs and four BL Lacs yielded $H>0.5$, indicating presence of long-term memory in the underlying process governing the variability. Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) have been observed with Chandra and XMM-Newton to gain insights into the initial stages of a radio source evolution and probe the black hole activity at the time of relativistic outflow formation. However, there have been no CSO observations to date at the hard X-ray energies (> 10 keV), impeding our ability to robustly constrain the properties of the intrinsic X-ray emission and of the medium surrounding the young expanding jets. We present the first hard X-ray observation of a CSO performed with NuSTAR. Our target, OQ+208, is detected up to 30 keV, and thus we establish CSOs as a new class of NuSTAR sources. We analyze the NuSTAR data jointly with our new Chandra and archival XMM-Newton data and find that a young, ~250 years old, radio jet spanning the length of ~10 pc coexists with cold obscuring matter, consistent with a dusty torus, with an equivalent hydrogen column density $N_H = 10^{23}$-$10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. The primary X-ray emission is characterized by a photon index $\Gamma \sim 1.45$ and intrinsic 0.5-30 keV luminosity $L \sim 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The results of our spectral modeling and broad-line optical classification of the source suggest a porous structure of the obscuring torus. Alternatively, the source may belong to the class of optically un-obscured/X-ray obscured AGN. The next generation of Cherenkov telescope cameras feature Silicon Photo Multipliers (SiPM), which can guarantee excellent performance and allow for observation also under moonlight, increasing duty-cycle and therefore the physics reach. A 4 m-diameter Davies-Cotton prototype telescope with a 9-degree optical FoV and a 1296-pixel SiPM camera, has been designed to meet the requirements of the next generation of ground-based gamma-ray observatories at the highest energies. The large-scale production of the telescopes for array deployment has required the development of a fully automated calibration strategy which relies on a dedicated hardware, the Camera Test Setup (CTS). For each camera pixel, the CTS is equipped with two LEDs, one operated in pulsed mode to reproduce signal and one in continuous mode to reproduce night-sky background. In this contribution we will present the camera calibration strategy, from the laboratory measurement to the on-site monitoring with emphasis on the results obtained with the first camera prototype. In addition, key performances such as charge resolution, time resolution and trigger efficiencies and their degradation with increasing night-sky background level will be presented.

The SST-1M telescope was developed as a prototype of a Small-Size-Telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array observatory and it has been extensively tested in Krakow since 2017. In this contribution we present validation of the Monte Carlo model of the prototype and expected performance in Krakow conditions. The All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory (AMEGO) is a probe class mission concept that will provide essential contributions to multimessenger astrophysics in the late 2020s and beyond. AMEGO combines high sensitivity in the 200 keV to 10 GeV energy range with a wide field of view, good spectral resolution, and polarization sensitivity. Therefore, AMEGO is key in the study of multimessenger astrophysical objects that have unique signatures in the gamma-ray regime, such as neutron star mergers, supernovae, and flaring active galactic nuclei. It has been suggested that adiabatic energy losses are not effective in stationary jets, where the jet expansion is not associated with net work. Here, we study jet solutions without them, assuming that adiabatic losses are balanced by electron reacceleration. The absence of effective adiabatic losses makes electron advection along the jet an important process, and we solve the electron kinetic equation including that process. We find analytical solutions for the case of conical jets with advection and synchrotron losses. We show that accounting for adiabatic losses in the case of sources showing soft partially self-absorbed spectra with the spectral index of $\alpha<0$ in the radio-to-IR regime requires deposition of large amounts of energy at large distances in the jet. On the other hand, such spectra can be accounted for by advection of electrons in the jet. We compare our results to the quiescent spectrum of the blazar Mrk 421. We find its soft radio-IR spectrum can be fitted either by a model without adiabatic losses and advection of electrons or by one with adiabatic losses, but the latter requires injection of a very large power at large distances., Comment: MNRAS in press, 10 pages

Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) show radio features such as jets, lobes, hot spots that are contained within the central 1 kpc region of their host galaxy. Thus, they are thought to be among the progenitors of large-scale radio galaxies. A debate on whether the CSOs are compact primarily because they are young or because they are surrounded by a dense medium impacting their expansion is ongoing. Until now, attempts to discriminate between the environmental and genuine youthfulness scenarios have been inconclusive. We present a study of three CSOs selected on the basis of their puzzling X-ray absorbing properties in prior Beppo-SAX and/or Chandra X-ray Observatory data. Our new XMM-Newton observations unambiguously confirm the nature of their X-ray absorbers. Furthermore, for the first time, our X-ray data reveal the existence of a population of CSOs with intrinsic hydrogen column density $N_H > 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ that is different from the population of X-ray unabsorbed CSOs. The two groups appear to be separated in the linear size vs. radio power plane. This finding suggests that a dense medium in X-ray obscured CSOs may be able to confine the radio jets. Alternatively, X-ray obscured CSOs could be seen as radio brighter than their unobscured counterparts either because they reside in a dense environment or because they have larger jet powers. Our results help constrain the origin of the X-ray emission and the location and size of the X-ray obscurer in CSOs, and indicate that the environment may play a key role during the initial expansion of a radio source., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, ApJ in press

We present the results from the Hitomi Soft Gamma-ray Detector (SGD) observation of the Crab nebula. The main part of SGD is a Compton camera, which in addition to being a spectrometer, is capable of measuring polarization of gamma-ray photons. The Crab nebula is one of the brightest X-ray / gamma-ray sources on the sky, and, the only source from which polarized X-ray photons have been detected. SGD observed the Crab nebula during the initial test observation phase of Hitomi. We performed the data analysis of the SGD observation, the SGD background estimation and the SGD Monte Carlo simulations, and, successfully detected polarized gamma-ray emission from the Crab nebula with only about 5 ks exposure time. The obtained polarization fraction of the phase-integrated Crab emission (sum of pulsar and nebula emissions) is (22.1 $\pm$ 10.6)% and, the polarization angle is 110.7$^o$ + 13.2 / $-$13.0$^o$ in the energy range of 60--160 keV (The errors correspond to the 1 sigma deviation). The confidence level of the polarization detection was 99.3%. The polarization angle measured by SGD is about one sigma deviation with the projected spin axis of the pulsar, 124.0$^o$ $\pm$0.1$^o$., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. We report the identification of blazar candidates behind the Magellanic Clouds. The objects were selected from the Magellanic Quasars Survey (MQS), which targeted the entire Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 70\% of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Among the 758 MQS quasars and 898 of unidentified (featureless spectra) objects, we identified a sample of 44 blazar candidates, including 27 flat spectrum radio quasars and 17 BL Lacertae objects, respectively. All the blazar candidates from our sample were identified with respect to their radio, optical, and mid-infrared properties. The newly selected blazar candidates possess the long-term, multi-colour photometric data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, multi-colour mid-infrared observations, and archival radio data for one frequency at least. In addition, for nine of them the radio polarization data are available. With such data, these objects can be used to study the physics behind the blazar variability detected in the optical and mid-infrared bands, as a tool to investigate magnetic field geometry of the LMC and SMC, and as an exemplary sample of point like sources most likely detectable in $\gamma$-ray range with the newly emerging Cherenkov Telescope Array., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results from the Hitomi X-ray observation of a young composite-type supernova remnant (SNR) G21.5$-$0.9, whose emission is dominated by the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) contribution. The X-ray spectra in the 0.8-80 keV range obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS), Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) and Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) show a significant break in the continuum as previously found with the NuSTAR observation. After taking into account all known emissions from the SNR other than the PWN itself, we find that the Hitomi spectra can be fitted with a broken power law with photon indices of $\Gamma_1=1.74\pm0.02$ and $\Gamma_2=2.14\pm0.01$ below and above the break at $7.1\pm0.3$ keV, which is significantly lower than the NuSTAR result ($\sim9.0$ keV). The spectral break cannot be reproduced by time-dependent particle injection one-zone spectral energy distribution models, which strongly indicates that a more complex emission model is needed, as suggested by recent theoretical models. We also search for narrow emission or absorption lines with the SXS, and perform a timing analysis of PSR J1833$-$1034 with the HXI and SGD. No significant pulsation is found from the pulsar. However, unexpectedly, narrow absorption line features are detected in the SXS data at 4.2345 keV and 9.296 keV with a significance of 3.65 $\sigma$. While the origin of these features is not understood, their mere detection opens up a new field of research and was only possible with the high resolution, sensitivity and ability to measure extended sources provided by an X-ray microcalorimeter., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. The present paper investigates the temperature structure of the X-ray emitting plasma in the core of the Perseus cluster using the 1.8--20.0 keV data obtained with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi Observatory. A series of four observations were carried out, with a total effective exposure time of 338 ks and covering a central region $\sim7'$ in diameter. The SXS was operated with an energy resolution of $\sim$5 eV (full width at half maximum) at 5.9 keV. Not only fine structures of K-shell lines in He-like ions but also transitions from higher principal quantum numbers are clearly resolved from Si through Fe. This enables us to perform temperature diagnostics using the line ratios of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, and to provide the first direct measurement of the excitation temperature and ionization temperature in the Perseus cluster. The observed spectrum is roughly reproduced by a single temperature thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium, but detailed line ratio diagnostics reveal slight deviations from this approximation. In particular, the data exhibit an apparent trend of increasing ionization temperature with increasing atomic mass, as well as small differences between the ionization and excitation temperatures for Fe, the only element for which both temperatures can be measured. The best-fit two-temperature models suggest a combination of 3 and 5 keV gas, which is consistent with the idea that the observed small deviations from a single temperature approximation are due to the effects of projection of the known radial temperature gradient in the cluster core along the line of sight. Comparison with the Chandra/ACIS and the XMM-Newton/RGS results on the other hand suggests that additional lower-temperature components are present in the ICM but not detectable by Hitomi SXS given its 1.8--20 keV energy band., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, 9 tables. The Hitomi SXS spectrum of the Perseus cluster, with $\sim$5 eV resolution in the 2-9 keV band, offers an unprecedented benchmark of the atomic modeling and database for hot collisional plasmas. It reveals both successes and challenges of the current atomic codes. The latest versions of AtomDB/APEC (3.0.8), SPEX (3.03.00), and CHIANTI (8.0) all provide reasonable fits to the broad-band spectrum, and are in close agreement on best-fit temperature, emission measure, and abundances of a few elements such as Ni. For the Fe abundance, the APEC and SPEX measurements differ by 16%, which is 17 times higher than the statistical uncertainty. This is mostly attributed to the differences in adopted collisional excitation and dielectronic recombination rates of the strongest emission lines. We further investigate and compare the sensitivity of the derived physical parameters to the astrophysical source modeling and instrumental effects. The Hitomi results show that an accurate atomic code is as important as the astrophysical modeling and instrumental calibration aspects. Substantial updates of atomic databases and targeted laboratory measurements are needed to get the current codes ready for the data from the next Hitomi-level mission., Comment: 46 pages, 25 figures, 11 tables. We present Hitomi observations of N132D, a young, X-ray bright, O-rich core-collapse supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Despite a very short observation of only 3.7 ks, the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) easily detects the line complexes of highly ionized S K and Fe K with 16-17 counts in each. The Fe feature is measured for the first time at high spectral resolution. Based on the plausible assumption that the Fe K emission is dominated by He-like ions, we find that the material responsible for this Fe emission is highly redshifted at ~800 km/s compared to the local LMC interstellar medium (ISM), with a 90% credible interval of 50-1500 km/s if a weakly informative prior is placed on possible line broadening. This indicates (1) that the Fe emission arises from the supernova ejecta, and (2) that these ejecta are highly asymmetric, since no blue-shifted component is found. The S K velocity is consistent with the local LMC ISM, and is likely from swept-up ISM material. These results are consistent with spatial mapping that shows the He-like Fe concentrated in the interior of the remnant and the S tracing the outer shell. The results also show that even with a very small number of counts, direct velocity measurements from Doppler-shifted lines detected in extended objects like supernova remnants are now possible. Thanks to the very low SXS background of ~1 event per spectral resolution element per 100 ks, such results are obtainable during short pointed or slew observations with similar instruments. This highlights the power of high-spectral-resolution imaging observations, and demonstrates the new window that has been opened with Hitomi and will be greatly widened with future missions such as the X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (XARM) and Athena., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 1 table. We report a Hitomi observation of IGR J16318-4848, a high-mass X-ray binary system with an extremely strong absorption of N_H~10^{24} cm^{-2}. Previous X-ray studies revealed that its spectrum is dominated by strong fluorescence lines of Fe as well as continuum emission. For physical and geometrical insight into the nature of the reprocessing material, we utilize the high spectroscopic resolving power of the X-ray microcalorimeter (the soft X-ray spectrometer; SXS) and the wide-band sensitivity by the soft and hard X-ray imager (SXI and HXI) aboard Hitomi. Even though photon counts are limited due to unintended off-axis pointing, the SXS spectrum resolves Fe K{\alpha_1} and K{\alpha_2} lines and puts strong constraints on the line centroid and width. The line width corresponds to the velocity of 160^{+300}_{-70} km s^{-1}. This represents the most accurate, and smallest, width measurement of this line made so far from any X-ray binary, much less than the Doppler broadening and shift expected from speeds which are characteristic of similar systems. Combined with the K-shell edge energy measured by the SXI and HXI spectra, the ionization state of Fe is estimated to be in the range of Fe I--IV. Considering the estimated ionization parameter and the distance between the X-ray source and the absorber, the density and thickness of the materials are estimated. The extraordinarily strong absorption and the absence of a Compton shoulder component is confirmed. These characteristics suggest reprocessing materials which are distributed in a narrow solid angle or scattering primarily with warm free electrons or neutral hydrogen., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

The origin of the narrow Fe-K{\alpha} fluorescence line at 6.4 keV from active galactic nuclei has long been under debate; some of the possible sites are the outer accretion disk, the broad line region, a molecular torus, or interstellar/intracluster media. In February-March 2016, we performed the first X-ray microcalorimeter spectroscopy with the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the Hitomi satellite of the Fanaroff-Riley type I radio galaxy NGC 1275 at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. With the high energy resolution of ~5 eV at 6 keV achieved by Hitomi/SXS, we detected the Fe-K{\alpha} line with ~5.4 {\sigma} significance. The velocity width is constrained to be 500-1600 km s$^{-1}$ (FWHM for Gaussian models) at 90% confidence. The SXS also constrains the continuum level from the NGC 1275 nucleus up to ~20 keV, giving an equivalent width ~20 eV of the 6.4 keV line. Because the velocity width is narrower than that of broad H{\alpha} line of ~2750 km s$^{-1}$, we can exclude a large contribution to the line flux from the accretion disk and the broad line region. Furthermore, we performed pixel map analyses on the Hitomi/SXS data and image analyses on the Chandra archival data, and revealed that the Fe-K{\alpha} line comes from a region within ~1.6 kpc from the NGC 1275 core, where an active galactic nucleus emission dominates, rather than that from intracluster media. Therefore, we suggest that the source of the Fe-K{\alpha} line from NGC 1275 is likely a low-covering fraction molecular torus or a rotating molecular disk which probably extends from a pc to hundreds pc scale in the active galactic nucleus system., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

Extending the earlier measurements reported in Hitomi collaboration (2016, Nature, 535, 117), we examine the atmospheric gas motions within the central 100~kpc of the Perseus cluster using observations obtained with the Hitomi satellite. After correcting for the point spread function of the telescope and using optically thin emission lines, we find that the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the hot gas is remarkably low and mostly uniform. The velocity dispersion reaches maxima of approximately 200~km~s$^{-1}$ toward the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) and toward the AGN inflated north-western `ghost' bubble. Elsewhere within the observed region, the velocity dispersion appears constant around 100~km~s$^{-1}$. We also detect a velocity gradient with a 100~km~s$^{-1}$ amplitude across the cluster core, consistent with large-scale sloshing of the core gas. If the observed gas motions are isotropic, the kinetic pressure support is less than 10\% of the thermal pressure support in the cluster core. The well-resolved optically thin emission lines have Gaussian shapes, indicating that the turbulent driving scale is likely below 100~kpc, which is consistent with the size of the AGN jet inflated bubbles. We also report the first measurement of the ion temperature in the intracluster medium, which we find to be consistent with the electron temperature. Thanks to its high spectral resolution (~5 eV at 6 keV), the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) on board Hitomi enables us to measure the detailed structure of spatially resolved emission lines from highly ionized ions in galaxy clusters for the first time. In this series of papers, using the SXS we have measured the velocities of gas motions, metallicities and the multi-temperature structure of the gas in the core of the Perseus cluster. Here, we show that when inferring physical properties from line emissivities in systems like Perseus, the resonant scattering (RS) effect should be taken into account. In the Hitomi waveband, RS mostly affects the FeXXV He$\alpha$ line ($w$) - the strongest line in the spectrum. The flux measured by Hitomi in this line is suppressed by a factor ~1.3 in the inner ~30 kpc, compared to predictions for an optically thin plasma; the suppression decreases with the distance from the center. The $w$ line also appears slightly broader than other lines from the same ion. The observed distortions of the $w$ line flux, shape and distance dependence are all consistent with the expected effect of the resonant scattering in the Perseus core. By measuring the ratio of fluxes in optically thick ($w$) and thin (FeXXV forbidden, He$\beta$, Ly$\alpha$) lines, and comparing these ratios with predictions from Monte Carlo radiative transfer simulations, the velocities of gas motions have been obtained. The results are consistent with the direct measurements of gas velocities from line broadening described elsewhere in this series, although the systematic and statistical uncertainties remain significant. Further improvements in the predictions of line emissivities in plasma models, and deeper observations with future X-ray missions will enable RS measurements to provide powerful constraints on the amplitude and anisotropy of clusters gas motions., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figure, 6 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

Compact radio galaxies with a GHz-peaked spectrum (GPS) and/or compact-symmetric-object (CSO) morphology (GPS/CSOs) are increasingly detected in the X-ray domain. Their radio and X-ray emissions are affected by significant absorption. However, the locations of the X-ray and radio absorbers are still debated. We investigated the relationship between the column densities of the total ($N_{\mathrm{H}}$) and neutral ($N_{\mathrm{HI}}$) hydrogen to statistically constrain the picture. We compiled a sample of GPS/CSOs including both literature data and new radio data that we acquired with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope for sources whose X-ray emission was either established or under investigation. In this sample, we compared the X-ray and radio hydrogen column densities, and found that $N_{\mathrm{H}}$ and $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$ display a significant positive correlation, with $N_{\mathrm{HI}} \propto N_{\mathrm{H}}^b$, where $b=0.47$ and $b=0.35$, depending on the subsample. The $N_{\mathrm{H}}$ - $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$ correlation suggests that the X-ray and radio absorbers are either co-spatial or different components of a continuous structure. The correlation displays a large intrinsic spread that we suggest to originate from fluctuations, around a mean value, of the ratio between the spin temperature and the covering factor of the radio absorber, $T_{\rm s}/C_{\rm f}$., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables; final version: a few typos corrected, minor style changes

We present arc-second-resolution data in the radio, IR, optical and X-ray for 4C+19.44 (=PKS 1354+195), the longest and straightest quasar jet with deep X-ray observations. We report results from radio images with half to one arc-second angular resolution at three frequencies, plus HST and Spitzer data. The Chandra data allow us to measure the X-ray spectral index in 10 distinct regions along the 18 arcsec jet and compare with the radio index. The radio and X-ray spectral indices of the jet regions are consistent with a value of $\alpha =0.80$ throughout the jet, to within 2 sigma uncertainties. The X-ray jet structure to the south extends beyond the prominent radio jet and connects to the southern radio lobe, and there is extended X-ray emission in the direction of the unseen counter jet and coincident with the northern radio lobe. This jet is remarkable since its straight appearance over a large distance allows the geometry factors to be taken as fixed along the jet. Using the model of inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background (iC/CMB) by relativistic electrons, we find that the magnetic field strengths and Doppler factors are relatively constant along the jet. If instead the X-rays are synchrotron emission, they must arise from a population of electrons distinct from the particles producing the radio synchrotron spectrum., Comment: Accepted for ApJ

The Crab nebula originated from a core-collapse supernova (SN) explosion observed in 1054 A.D. When viewed as a supernova remnant (SNR), it has an anomalously low observed ejecta mass and kinetic energy for an Fe-core collapse SN. Intensive searches were made for a massive shell that solves this discrepancy, but none has been detected. An alternative idea is that the SN1054 is an electron-capture (EC) explosion with a lower explosion energy by an order of magnitude than Fe-core collapse SNe. In the X-rays, imaging searches were performed for the plasma emission from the shell in the Crab outskirts to set a stringent upper limit to the X-ray emitting mass. However, the extreme brightness of the source hampers access to its vicinity. We thus employed spectroscopic technique using the X-ray micro-calorimeter onboard the Hitomi satellite. By exploiting its superb energy resolution, we set an upper limit for emission or absorption features from yet undetected thermal plasma in the 2-12 keV range. We also re-evaluated the existing Chandra and XMM-Newton data. By assembling these results, a new upper limit was obtained for the X-ray plasma mass of <~ 1Mo for a wide range of assumed shell radius, size, and plasma temperature both in and out of the collisional equilibrium. To compare with the observation, we further performed hydrodynamic simulations of the Crab SNR for two SN models (Fe-core versus EC) under two SN environments (uniform ISM versus progenitor wind). We found that the observed mass limit can be compatible with both SN models if the SN environment has a low density of <~ 0.03 cm-3 (Fe core) or <~ 0.1 cm-3 (EC) for the uniform density, or a progenitor wind density somewhat less than that provided by a mass loss rate of 10-5 Mo yr-1 at 20 km s-1 for the wind environment., Comment: PASJ in press. We present the results of our power spectral analysis for the BL Lac object PKS 0735+178 utilizing the Fermi-LAT survey at high-energy $\gamma$-rays, several ground-based optical telescopes, and single-dish radio telescopes operating at GHz frequencies. The novelty of our approach is that, by combining long-term and densely sampled intra-night light curves in the optical regime, we were able to construct for the first time the optical power spectrum of the blazar for a time domain extending from 23 years down to minutes. Our analysis reveals that: (i) the optical variability is consistent with a pure red noise, for which the power spectral density can well be approximated by a single power-law throughout the entire time domain probed; (ii) the slope of power spectral density at high-energy $\gamma$-rays ($\sim 1$), is significantly flatter than that found at radio and optical frequencies ($\sim 2$) within the corresponding time variability range; (iii) for the derived power spectra we did not detect any low-frequency flattening, nor do we see any evidence for cut-offs at the highest frequencies down to the noise floor levels due to measurement uncertainties. We interpret our findings in terms of a model where the blazar variability is generated by the underlying single stochastic process (at radio and optical frequencies), or a linear superposition of such processes (in the $\gamma$-ray regime). We analyze Chandra X-ray images of a sample of 11 quasars that are known to contain kiloparsec scale radio jets. The sample consists of five high-redshift (z >= 3.6) flat-spectrum radio quasars, and six intermediate redshift (2.1 < z < 2.9) quasars. The dataset includes four sources with integrated steep radio spectra and seven with flat radio spectra. A total of 25 radio jet features are present in this sample. We apply a Bayesian multi-scale image reconstruction method to detect and measure the X-ray emission from the jets. We compute deviations from a baseline model that does not include the jet, and compare observed X-ray images with those computed with simulated images where no jet features exist. This allows us to compute p-value upper bounds on the significance that an X- ray jet is detected in a pre-determined region of interest. We detected 12 of the features unambiguously, and an additional 6 marginally. We also find residual emission in the cores of 3 quasars and in the background of 1 quasar that suggest the existence of unresolved X-ray jets. The dependence of the X-ray to radio luminosity ratio on redshift is a potential diagnostic of the emission mechanism, since the inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons (IC/CMB) is thought to be redshift dependent, whereas in synchrotron models no clear redshift dependence is expected. We find that the high-redshift jets have X-ray to radio flux ratios that are marginally inconsistent with those from lower redshifts, suggesting that either the X-ray emissions is due to the IC/CMB rather than the synchrotron process, or that high redshift jets are qualitatively different., Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures, submitted to ApJ

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally-bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and a host of astrophysical processes. Knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, which dominates in mass over stars in a cluster, is a crucial missing ingredient. It can enable new insights into mechanical energy injection by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for the determination of cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50 million K diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The Active Galactic Nucleus of the central galaxy NGC1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These likely induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas preventing runaway radiative cooling; a process known as Active Galactic Nucleus Feedback. Here we report on Hitomi X-ray observations of the Perseus cluster core, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere where the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164+/-10 km/s in a region 30-60 kpc from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150+/-70 km/s is found across the 60 kpc image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is 4% or less of the thermodynamic pressure, with large scale shear at most doubling that estimate. We infer that total cluster masses determined from hydrostatic equilibrium in the central regions need little correction for turbulent pressure., Comment: 31 pages, 11 Figs, published in Nature July 8

The single-mirror small-size telescope (SST-1M) is one of the three proposed designs for the small-size telescopes (SSTs) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project. The SST-1M will be equipped with a 4 m-diameter segmented mirror dish and an innovative fully digital camera based on silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs). Since the SST sub-array will consist of up to 70 telescopes, the challenge is not only to build a telescope with excellent performance, but also to design it so that its components can be commissioned, assembled and tested by industry. In this paper we review the basic steps that led to the design concepts for the SST-1M camera and the ongoing realization of the first prototype, with focus on the innovative solutions adopted for the photodetector plane and the readout and trigger parts of the camera. In addition, we report on results of laboratory measurements on real scale elements that validate the camera design and show that it is capable of matching the CTA requirements of operating up to high-moon-light background conditions., Comment: 30 pages, 61 figures

We report on the detection of excess hard X-ray emission from the TeV BL Lac object Mrk421 during the historical low-flux state of the source in January 2013. NuSTAR observations were conducted four times between MJD56294 and MJD56312 with a total exposure of 80.9 ksec. The source flux in the 3-40 keV range was nearly constant except for MJD56307, when the average flux level increased by a factor of three. Throughout the exposure, the X-ray spectra of Mrk421 were well represented by a steep power-law model with a photon index of 3.1, although a significant excess was noted above 20 keV in the MJD56302 data when the source was in its faintest state. Moreover, Mrk421 was detected at more than the 4-sigma level in the 40-79 keV count maps for both MJD56307 and MJD56302 but not during the remaining two observations. The detected excess hard X-ray emissions connect smoothly with the extrapolation of the high-energy gamma-ray continuum of the blazar constrained by Fermi-LAT during the source quiescence. These findings indicate that, while the overall X-ray spectrum of Mrk421 is dominated by the highest-energy tail of the synchrotron continuum, the variable excess hard X-ray emission above 20 keV (on the timescale of a week) is related to the inverse Compton emission component. We report the $\gamma$-ray detection of a young radio galaxy, PKS 1718$-$649, belonging to the class of Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs), with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the {\it Fermi} satellite. The third {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray LAT catalog (3FGL) includes an unassociated $\gamma$-ray source, 3FGL J1728.0$-$6446, located close to PKS 1718$-$649. Using the latest Pass 8 calibration, we confirm that the best fit $1 \sigma$ position of the $\gamma$-ray source is compatible with the radio location of PKS 1718$-$649. Cross-matching of the $\gamma$-ray source position with the positions of blazar sources from several catalogs yields negative results. Thus, we conclude that PKS 1718$-$649 is the most likely counterpart to the unassociated LAT source. We obtain a detection test statistics TS$\sim 36$ ($>$5$\sigma$) with a best fit photon spectral index $\Gamma=$2.9$\pm$0.3 and a 0.1-100 GeV photon flux density $F_{\rm 0.1-100GeV}=$(11.5$\pm$0.3)$\times{\rm 10^{-9}}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. We argue that the linear size ($\sim$2 pc), the kinematic age ($\sim$100 years), and the source distance ($z=0.014$) make PKS 1718$-$649 an ideal candidate for $\gamma$-ray detection in the framework of the model proposing that the most compact and the youngest CSOs can efficiently produce GeV radiation via inverse-Compton scattering of the ambient photon fields by the radio lobe non-thermal electrons. Thus, our detection of the source in $\gamma$-rays establishes young radio galaxies as a distinct class of extragalactic high-energy emitters, and yields an unique insight on the physical conditions in compact radio lobes interacting with the interstellar medium of the host galaxy., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We report on the 1.6 GHz (18 cm) VLBI observations of the unresolved, steady TeV source HESS J1943+213 located in the Galactic plane, performed with the European VLBI Network (EVN) in 2014. Our new observations with a nearly full EVN array provide the deepest image of HESS J1943+213 at the highest resolution ever achieved, enabling us to resolve the long-standing issues of the source identification. The milliarcsecond-scale structure of HESS J1943+213 has a clear asymmetric morphology, consisting of a compact core and a diffuse jet-like tail. This is broadly consistent with the previous e-EVN observations of the source performed in 2011, and re-analyzed in this work. The core component is characterized by the brightness temperature of $\gtrsim1.8 \times 10^9$ K, which is typical for low-luminosity blazars in general. Overall, radio properties of HESS J1943+213 are consistent with the source classification as an "extreme high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object". Remarkably, we note that since HESS J1943+213 does not reveal any optical or infrared signatures of the AGN activity, it would never be recognized and identified as a BL Lac object, if not its location close to the Galactic plane where the High Energy Stereoscopic System has surveyed, and the follow-up dedicated X-ray and radio studies triggered by the source detection in the TeV range. Our results suggest therefore a presence of an unrecognized, possibly very numerous population of particularly extreme HBLs, and simultaneously demonstrate that the low-frequency VLBI observations with high-angular resolution are indispensable for a proper identification of such objects., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJL

We present the results of the first X-ray study of a sample of 16 young radio sources classified as Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). We observed six of them for the first time in X-rays using {\it Chandra}, re-observed four with the previous {\it XMM-Newton} or {\it Beppo-SAX} data, and included six other with the archival data. All the sources are nearby, $z<1$ with the age of their radio structures ($<3000$~years) derived from the hotspots advance velocity. Our results show heterogeneous nature of the CSOs indicating a complex environment associated with young radio sources. The sample covers a range in X-ray luminosity, $L_{2-10\,\rm keV} \sim 10^{41}$-$10^{45}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$, and intrinsic absorbing column density of $N_H \simeq 10^{21}$--10$^{22}$\,cm$^{-2}$. In particular, we detected extended X-ray emission in 1718$-$649; a hard photon index of $\Gamma \simeq 1$ in 2021$+$614 and 1511$+$0518 consistent with either a Compton thick absorber or non-thermal emission from compact radio lobes, and in 0710$+$439 an ionized iron emission line at $E_{rest}=(6.62\pm0.04)$\,keV and EW $\sim 0.15-$1.4\,keV, and a decrease by an order of magnitude in the 2-10 keV flux since the 2008 {\it XMM-Newton} observation in 1607$+$26. We conclude that our pilot study of CSOs provides a variety of exceptional diagnostics and highlights the importance of deep X-ray observations of large samples of young sources. This is necessary in order to constrain theoretical models for the earliest stage of radio source evolution and study the interactions of young radio sources with the interstellar environment of their host galaxies., Comment: to be published in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a detailed analysis of the best-quality multi-wavelength data gathered for the large-scale jet in the core-dominated quasar 3C 273. We analyze all the archival observations of the target with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the far-ultraviolet observations with the Hubble Space Telescope, and the 8.4 GHz map obtained with the Very Large Array. In our study we focus on investigating the morphology of the outflow at different frequencies, and therefore we apply various techniques for the image deconvolution, paying particular attention to a precise modeling of the Chandra and Hubble point spread functions. We find that the prominent brightness enhancements in the X-ray and far-ultraviolet jet of 3C 273 - the "knots" - are not point-like, and can be resolved transversely as extended features with sizes of about $\simeq 0.5$ kpc. Also, the radio outflow is wider than the deconvolved X-ray/ultraviolet jet. We have also found circumstantial evidence that the intensity peaks of the X-ray knots are located systematically upstream of the corresponding radio intensity peaks, with the projected spatial offsets along the jet ranging from $\lesssim 0.2$ kpc up to $\simeq 1$ kpc. We discuss our findings in the wider context of multi-component models for the emission and structure of large-scale quasar jets, and speculate on the physical processes enabling an efficient acceleration of the emitting ultra-relativistic electrons along the entire jet length that exceeds 100 kpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Most of the extragalactic objects detected so far in the very high energy (VHE) regime are blazars, but the discovered nearby radio galaxies: M87, Cen A and NGC 1275 of type FRI seem to constitute a new class of VHE emitters. The radio galaxy PKS 0625-354 was observed and detected ($\sim$6$\sigma$) with the H.E.S.S. phase I telescopes in 2012, above an energy threshold of 250 GeV. The time-averaged VHE energy spectrum is well characterized by a power law model. The occurrence of low-amplitude flux variations in blazars on hourly timescales, commonly known as microvariability, is still a widely debated subject in high-energy astrophysics. Several competing scenarios have been proposed to explain such occurrences, including various jet plasma instabilities leading to the formation of shocks, magnetic reconnection sites, and turbulence. In this letter we present the results of our detailed investigation of a prominent, five-hour-long optical microflare detected during recent WEBT campaign in 2014, March 2-6 targeting the blazar 0716+714. After separating the flaring component from the underlying base emission continuum of the blazar, we find that the microflare is highly polarized, with the polarization degree $\sim (40-60)\%$$\pm (2-10)\%$, and the electric vector position angle $\sim (10 - 20)$deg$\pm (1-8)$deg slightly misaligned with respect to the position angle of the radio jet. The microflare evolution in the $(Q,\,U)$ Stokes parameter space exhibits a looping behavior with a counter-clockwise rotation, meaning polarization degree decreasing with the flux (but higher in the flux decaying phase), and approximately stable polarization angle. The overall very high polarization degree of the flare, its symmetric flux rise and decay profiles, and also its structured evolution in the $Q-U$ plane, all imply that the observed flux variation corresponds to a single emission region characterized by a highly ordered magnetic field. Here we present a new approach for constraining luminous blazars, incorporating fully time-dependent and self-consistent modeling of bright gamma-ray flares of PKS1510-089 resolved with Fermi-LAT, in the framework of the internal shock scenario. The results of our modeling imply the location of the gamma-ray flaring zone outside of the broad-line region, namely around 0.3pc from the core for a free-expanding jet with the opening angle Gamma, \theta_\mathrm{jet} \simeq 1 (where Gamma is the jet bulk Lorentz factor), up to \simeq 3pc for a collimated outflow with Gamma, \theta_\mathrm{jet} \simeq 0.1. Moreover, under the Gamma, \theta_\mathrm{jet} \simeq 1 condition, our modeling indicates the maximum efficiency of the jet production during the flares, with the total jet energy flux strongly dominated by protons and exceeding the available accretion power in the source. This is in contrast to the quiescence states of the blazar, characterized by lower jet kinetic power and an approximate energy equipartition between different plasma constituents. We demostrate how strictly simultaneous observations of flaring PKS1510-089 at optical, X-ray, and GeV photon energies on hourly timescales, augmented by extensive simulations as presented in this paper, may help to impose further precise constraints on the magnetization and opening angle of the emitting region. Our detailed modeling implies in addition that a non-uniformity of the Doppler factor across the jet, caused by the radial expansion of the outflow, may lead to a pronounced time distortion in the observed gamma-ray light curves, resulting in particular in asymmetric flux profiles with substantially extended decay phases., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most powerful astrophysical objects discovered to date. Indeed, jetted AGN studies have been considered a prominent science case for SKA, and were included in several different chapters of the previous SKA Science Book (Carilli & Rawlings 2004). Most of the fundamental questions about the physics of relativistic jets still remain unanswered, and await high-sensitivity radio instruments such as SKA to solve them. These questions will be addressed specially through analysis of the massive data sets arising from the deep, all-sky surveys (both total and polarimetric flux) from SKA1. Wide-field very-long-baseline-interferometric survey observations involving SKA1 will serve as a unique tool for distinguishing between extragalactic relativistic jets and star forming galaxies via brightness temperature measurements. Subsequent SKA1 studies of relativistic jets at different resolutions will allow for unprecedented cosmological studies of AGN jets up to the epoch of re-ionization, enabling detailed characterization of the jet composition, magnetic field, particle populations, and plasma properties on all scales. SKA will enable us to study the dependence of jet power and star formation on other properties of the AGN system. SKA1 will enable such studies for large samples of jets, while VLBI observations involving SKA1 will provide the sensitivity for pc-scale imaging, and SKA2 (with its extraordinary sensitivity and dynamic range) will allow us for the first time to resolve and model the weakest radio structures in the most powerful radio-loud AGN., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures; to appear as part of 'Cosmic Magnetism' in Proceedings 'Advancing Astrophysics with the SKA (AASKA14)', PoS(AASKA14_093)

The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions developed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), with a planned launch in 2015. The ASTRO-H mission is equipped with a suite of sensitive instruments with the highest energy resolution ever achieved at E > 3 keV and a wide energy range spanning four decades in energy from soft X-rays to gamma-rays. The simultaneous broad band pass, coupled with the high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV of the micro-calorimeter, will enable a wide variety of important science themes to be pursued. We performed a systematic X-ray study of eight nearby gamma-ray bright radio galaxies with Suzaku for understanding the origin of their X-ray emissions. The Suzaku spectra for five of those have been presented previously, while the remaining three (M87, PKS0625-354, and 3C78) are presented here for the first time. Based on the Fe-K line strength, X-ray variability, and X-ray power-law photon indices, and using additional information on the [O III] line emission, we argue for a jet origin of the observed X-ray emission in these three sources. We also analyzed five years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) GeV gamma-ray data on PKS0625-354 and 3C78 to understand these sources within the blazar picture. We found significant gamma-ray variability in the former object. Overall, we note that the Suzaku spectra for both PKS0625-354 and 3C78 are rather soft, while the LAT spectra are unusually hard when compared with other gamma-ray detected low-power (FR I) radio galaxies. We demonstrate that the constructed broad-band spectral energy distributions of PKS0625-354 and 3C78 are well described by a one-zone synchrotron/synchrotron self-Compton model. The results of the modeling indicate lower bulk Lorentz factors compared to those typically found in other BL Lac objects, but consistent with the values inferred from modeling other LAT-detected FR\,I radio galaxies. Interestingly, the modeling also implies very high peak ($\sim 10^{16}$ Hz) synchrotron frequencies in the two analyzed sources, contrary to previously-suggested scenarios for FR I/BL Lac unification.
