Even though the problem of resource depletion of our planet is getting increasingly worse, most of the input of agro-food industry is discarded, causing expensive management and disposal issues. According to the Circular Economy principles, these problems can be faced by giving more value to wastage, turning it into inputs to innovative supply chains: the biorefineries. The BIOWAFER project addresses those issues investigating how agri-food by-products consistently produced in Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy) can be assigned to consecutive biorefinery processes integrated in order to obtain high-added value molecules for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Among all food chains considered, tomato, wine and cheese industries were chosen for waste valorisation. In order to overcome the seasonal waste production, a detailed analysis of storage and stabilization of the by-products was performed. Streptococcus zooepidemicus was chosen to obtain hyaluronic acid through waste fermentation process. The biorefinery was integrated with waste bioconversion by Hermetia illucens larvae followed by sustainable chemical extraction processes of potential antioxidants, lipids and peptides. Finally, the residues of all the above-mentioned phases will be used for pyro-gasification, to obtain biochar and syngas for agronomic and energy purposes respectively, allowing the closure of the supply chains in a circular way. Many other circular approaches are presented in literature, but, in our knowledge, no one use fermentation coupled with larvae rearing for waste reduction and conversion. Proteins from Hermetia illucens (or Black Soldier Fly, BSF) have been employed in this study as possible source for bioplastic formulation. This type of bioplastic can replace the actual materials employed in agriculture, avoiding the critical issues concerning the soil pollution due to conventional plastic end-life. Different plasticizing agents (glycerol and polyethylene glycol) have been tested and the ability to generate a homogenous film, through wet casting, has been evaluated. Characterizations on tensile properties and water absorbance have been performed to estimate the effect of different plasticizers employed. Bioplastic formed by proteins/glycerol ratio 50:50 has shown interesting properties, contributing to the formation of homogeneous and free-standing film with tensile stress at break near to 2.5MPa, almost constant during degradation profile test. At the same time the high degree of solubility in water has been verified for the same sample (~70%). The environmental impact of the laboratory scale production of bioplastics obtained from BSFs proteins has been evaluated through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Inventory analysis has been conducted using primary data and Ecoinvent database. LCA analysis has been conducted using the SimaPro 8.3 software and the IMPACT 2002+ method of evaluation. The analysis show that the energy consumption is high (63%), but this can be mainly attributed to a laboratory-scale production process and related with the energy consumption of aspiration system (93%). We computed the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) to identify the environmental performance of recycled wool by means of data belonging to a real case study in Italy. First, we analyzed inventory data quality by computing the data quality rating (DQR) index, according to the criteria provided by the PEF protocol. Quality of specific and generic data (selected from the Ecoinvent database) was evaluated as excellent and good, respectively. We then quantified the impacts related to each relevant production process via Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Specifically, we identified four main processes involved in the production of recycled wool for the selected case study: (i) clippings supply, (ii) clippings preparation, (iii) ragging, and (iv) dyeing. In the production of recycled wool, the rate of incoming materials subject to dyeing decreases to about 40%. Nevertheless, LCA revealed that this process is the most critical due to the high energy consumption and chemical substances employed. This result was confirmed by further analysis based on the Eco-indicator approach and the single point eco-indicator score. In particular, we found that environmental impacts associated with the production of recycled wool are mainly related to the following categories: (i) depletion of abiotic resources, (ii) inorganic particles released into the air, (iii) climate change, and (iv) human toxicity. We quantified that the contribution of the dyeing process to the relevant impact categories is higher than 75%. These results revealed how the use of recycled materials strongly increases the environmental performance associated with wool production, reducing the impact of the most environmental demanding processes.
