12. Do not disturb: Visitors' effect on the behavior and welfare of female and male big cats in zoos.

Abstract

The effect of visitor presence on animal behavior needs to be evaluated to ensure the welfare and improve the husbandry of the individuals in zoos. This study aims to assess the effect of visitor presence on the behavior and welfare of pairs of Amur tiger, snow leopard, and Eurasian lynx at Parco Natura Viva, Italy. The study was made of two periods: the baseline, in which the zoo was closed, and the visitor presence period, in which the zoo was opened. Per period and per subject 12 30‐min observations were done. Continuous focal animal sampling method was used to collect behavior duration of the big cats. The main results of the study highlighted that, when visitors were present, all felids except for the female lynx were significantly more inactive than in the baseline. Moreover, despite interindividual and inter‐species variability in the significance level of findings, natural behaviors such as attentive behavior, exploration/marking, locomotion, and positive social interactions were performed more in the baseline than in the visitor presence period. Finally, when visitors were present, as the studied subjects experienced daily longer exposure to visitors, inactivity increased whereas individual species‐typical behaviors (e.g., locomotion) and positive social interactions decreased. Thus, visitors seem to partially alter the behavioral time‐budgets of the study big cats, increasing inactivity and decreasing the performance of species‐specific behavior, at least in some individuals. Highlights: We compared individual and social behaviors of zoo big cats in the absence and in the presence of visitors.In the presence of visitors, big cats showed higher levels of inactivity and decreased performance of natural behaviors.We reported interindividual and inter‐specific variation in behavioral changes due to visitors' presence. Abstract

Brain hemispheres have different functions and control the movements of the contralateral side of the body. One of these functions is the process of emotions. The right hemisphere hypothesis suggests that the right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for emotional processing, and so the left side of the body is activated in emotive contexts such as social interactions. In contrast, the valence hypothesis proposes that both hemispheres are involved in emotional processing, with the left hemisphere processing positive emotions and the right hemisphere dealing with negative emotions. As sociality can influence emotional states, studying behavioral lateralization in social contexts, and the effect of rank on laterality should help to clarify the role of brain hemispheres in social responses. The aim of this study was to investigate whether and how target animacy (interaction with inanimate and animate targets) affected manual laterality in 12 zoo-housed Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus). We focused on both the direction and the strength of hand preference and tested the effect of social rank on lateralization. We used continuous focal animal sampling to record bouts of hand preference when interacting with inanimate targets and animate targets (during social and self-directed behaviors). and recorded social interactions to measure the rank. For inanimate targets, 14 15-minute sessions were done. For animate targets, 14 2-hour morning sessions and 14 90-minute afternoon sessions were done. At the individual level, six of nine lateralized macaques were significantly right-handed when interacting with inanimate targets, whereas only three subjects showed a significant (right) lateralization when interacting with animate targets. Thus, inanimate targets seem to elicit manual laterality to a greater extent than animate targets. However, we found no group-level hand preference for actions directed toward inanimate or animate targets in general. However, we found a group-level right-hand bias for affiliative behaviors, whereas no effects of social rank on lateralization was present. Based on our results, both hemispheres seem to process emotions, influencing hand preference during social interactions, as suggested by the valence hypothesis. Despite the limitations due to the small sample size, these findings suggest that Barbary macaques show hand preference patterns similar to those found in great apes and other catarrhines in interactions with both inanimate and animate targets

Abstract

An artificial fruit (AF) was used to test for social learning in pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) and adult humans (Homo sapiens). A monkey demonstrator opened the AF, showing alternative methods to 2 groups of cage mates. Video films of the monkey demonstrations were presented to adult humans. Compared with chimpanzees and children, the macaques watched the demonstrations significantly less and in a much more sporadic manner. They also produced only very weak and transitory evidence of social learning. In contrast, the adult humans performed as one might expect of optimum imitators, even producing evidence of components of a 'ratchet effect.' Abstract

Four puzzle boxes were used to investigate localized stimulus enhancement and object movement reenactment (OMR) in 13 pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) and 30 human infants (Homo sapiens). Participants received contrasting demonstrations on each box. A circular lid was gripped by its rim or handle and swiveled to the left or right. A flap door was pushed or flipped. A sliding lid was pushed to the left or right. A pin bolt was demonstrated being pushed down, or the participants were left to solve the puzzle for themselves. Despite the fact that the monkeys watched the demonstrations about 60% of the time, only a weak OMR effect was found on the sliding lid. In contrast, the children watched significantly more, and there was clear evidence of socially mediated learning on all of the boxes.

Abstract

Animal welfare assessment has undergone considerable development. The management and rearing of big cats may lead these animals to express behavioral problems. This study was performed to assess the well-being of a non-breeding pair of Siberian tigers using ethological and physiological parameters. During the day, the animals were kept together in the outdoor exhibit, whereas overnight the tigers were individually housed. Twenty 45-min sessions were run for each subject. The Focal Animal Sampling method was used to record individual and social behaviors. In addition, fecal cortisol levels were monitored and determined by enzyme immunoassay. Single case analysis was run to analyze behavioral data and cortisol levels. Findings highlight that species-specific behaviors were performed by both animals. However, significant differences between the two tigers were observed in stress-related behaviors: the female showed stereotypic behavior, whereas the male did not. No significant differences in fecal cortisol levels were observed. Results suggest that the ethological parameters could be more sensitive than the physiological ones in detecting a stressful condition. Analyzing behavioral data together with physiological stress markers may allow for a more complete assessment of animal welfare.

Abstract

Bifidobacteria represent one of the main bacterial groups occurring in the gut of primates and other animals and are well known for their positive role on host health. Moreover, bifidobacteriaceae are used in coevolution studies since they are maintained within host lineages across hundreds of thousands of host generations. Therefore, the discovery of bifidobacterial diversity in the gastrointestinal tract together with the isolation and characterization of novel bacterial taxa in different hosts is essential. Until now no evidence has been reported about the occurrence of bifidobacteria in bats which are a crucial part of the ecosystem and are ecologically and economically advantageous to humans especially frugivorous ones. This study aimed at the investigation of bifidobacteria in bats belonging to Rousettus aegyptiacus species which were born in Egypt and hosted in Natura Viva Garda Zoological Park (Bussolengo, Verona, Italy). Faecal samples were serially diluted and plated on selective medium MRS supplemented with 0.05 % (w/v) cysteine, 100 mg/l norfloxacin, 2 mg/l cycloheximide, 50 mg/l mupirocin and 1 ml/l acetic acid. Strains were typed by BOX-PCR. Representative isolates of each cluster were identified sequencing 16S rRNA gene and studied for phylogenetical relationship with other Bifidobacteriaceae. Similarities among profiles were calculated by clustering the Pearson‟s correlation matrix using UPGMA algorithm. A total of 13 bifidobacteria were isolated and two of them belonged to new bifidobacterial species according to 16S rRNA gene analysis. The majority of strains revealed a phylogenetic relationship with bifidobacteria isolated from non-human primates. This evolutive link of bifidobacterial microbiotas between bats and non-human primates will be further investigated studying bifidobacteria characterizing Rousettus aegyptiacus bats from Egypt in order to offer new insights about bats origin.

Many studies have highlighted evidence of lateralized behaviours in vertebrates and invertebrates, indicating that cerebral lateralization might not be uniquely human. Flamingos, as highly social species, might represent an interesting model in the study of lateralization, as this trait appears to be useful in gregarious animals. This study aims to investigate the presence of lateralized behaviours in zoo flamingos. The subjects of this study were 41 greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) and 29 Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis). Ten 20-minute observation sessions per subject were carried out, using focal animal sampling method. Bouts of side preferences were recorded for foraging, neck resting and preening. Moreover, bouts and duration of leg use for postural support during unipedal standing (leg stance) were also collected. Results highlighted a group-level right-side preference for foraging in the whole sample as well as within each species. Within greater flamingos, group-level right-side preferences were also reported for neck resting and leg stance. Differences between the two flocks were found, with greater flamingos displaying right preferences to a greater extent than Chilean flamingos. Males showed a more pronounced right preference than females for some categories. Behavioural and brain lateralization is widespread among non-human vertebrates. Motor lateralization has been investigated in the domestic dog, revealing that "pawedness" in this species seems to be sex and task related; however, few if any studies considered this asymmetry in wolves (Canis lupus). The aim of this study was to investigate the paw preference of seven wolves housed at Parco Natura Viva – Italy, during the interaction with food-related (FD) and olfactory (OLF) environmental enrichment devices. Eleven sessions were done (22 session in total) per condition (FD and OLF), and data about enrichment manipulation were collected. Most of the wolves manipulated the enrichment devices using one paw rather than both paws. At the individual level, all subjects were lateralized in paw use, six were right pawed, one was left pawed (the alpha male) regardless of the enrichment condition. The fact that one paw rather than both was frequently involved in manipulation could indicate a practical advantage for each individual in being lateralized in paw use. Despite the small sample size, our results provide interesting insights about lateralization in wolves, deserving further investigations. Abstract

Four novel Gram-stain-positive, non spore forming and fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase-positive strains were isolated from the faeces of a cotton top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) and an emperor tamarin (Saguinus imperator). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA revealed that bifidobacterial strains TRE 1T exhibit close phylogenetic relatedness to Bifidobacterium catulorum DSM 103154 (96.0%) and Bifidobacterium tissieri DSM 100201 (96.0%); TRE DT and TRE HT were closely related to Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum ATCC 15708T with similarity values of 97.4% and 97.5%, respectively; TRI 7T was closely related to Bifidobacterium tissieri DSM 100201 (96.0%). The Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) and in silico DDH (isDDH) analysis with closest neighbour supported an independent phylogenetic position of all strains with values ranged from 74 to 85% for ANI and from 24 to 28% for isDDH. DNA base composition of the four strains was in the range of 58.3–63.5 mol% G + C. Based on the phylogenetic, genotypic and phenotypic data, the strains TRE 1T, TRE DT, TRE HT and TRI 7T clearly represent four novel taxa within the genus Bifidobacterium for which the names Bifidobacterium primatium sp. nov. (type strain TRE 1T = DSM 100687T = JCM 30945T), Bifidobacterium scaligerum sp. nov. (type strain TRE DT = DSM 103140T = JCM 31792T), Bifidobacterium felsineum sp. nov. (type strain TRE HT = DSM 103139T = JCM 31789T) and Bifidobacterium simiarum sp. nov. (type strain TRI 7T = DSM 103153T = JCM 31793) are proposed.
