Widespread gas venting along the Cascadia margin is investigated from acoustic water column data and reveals a nonuniform regional distribution of over 1100 mapped acoustic flares. The highest number of flares occurs on the shelf, and the highest flare density is seen around the nutrition-rich outflow of the Juan de Fuca Strait. We determine similar to 430 flow-rates at similar to 340 individual flare locations along the margin with instantaneous in situ values ranging from similar to 6 mL min(-1) to similar to 18 L min(-1). Applying a tidal-modulation model, a depth-dependent methane density, and extrapolating these results across the margin using two normalization techniques yields a combined average in situ flow-rate of similar to 88 x 10(6) kg y(-1). The average methane flux-rate for the Cascadia margin is thus estimated to similar to 0.9 g y(-1) m(-2). Combined uncertainties result in a range of these values between 4.5 and 1800% of the estimated mean values.

Highlights • Dual-vergence structure is observed for the first time on the northern Cascadia margin. • Around central Vancouver Island, vergence switches from seaward in the south to landward in the north. • First OBS migration study imaging the top of the igneous oceanic crust using only a small airgun source (120 in.3). • OBS migration indicates that an OBS, in water depths up to 2.5 km, can image up to 5 km on either side of its seafloor position. Abstract The detailed structure of the northern Cascadia basin and frontal ridge region was obtained using data from several widely spaced ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs). Mirror imaging was used in which the downgoing multiples (mirror signal) are migrated as they provide information about a much larger area than imaging with primary signal alone. Specifically, Kirchhoff time migration was applied to hydrophone and vertical geophone data. Our results indicate remarkable structures that were not observed on the northern Cascadia margin in previous single-channel or multi-channel seismic (MCS) data. Results show that, in these water depths (2.0–2.5 km), an OBS can image up to 5 km on either side of its position on the seafloor and hence an OBS spacing of 5 km is sufficient to provide a two-fold migration stack. Results also show the top of the igneous oceanic crust at 5–6 km beneath the seafloor using only a small airgun source (120 in.3). Specifically, OBS migration results clearly show the continuity of reflectors which enabled the identification of frontal thrusts and a main thrust fault. These faults indicate, for the first time on this margin, the presence of a dual-vergence structure. These kinds of structures have so far been observed in < 0.5% of modern convergent margins and could be related to horizontal compression associated with subduction and low basal shear stress resulting from over-pressure. Alignments of fractures and cracks in marine sediments may be controlled by various mechanisms such as horizontal compaction and extension and basement faulting. The orientation of these alignments can be estimated through analyses of S‐wave splitting. If sensors in ocean‐bottom observations are deployed through free fall, sensor orientation needs to be determined in order for the recorded data to be used for such analyses. Here, we estimate the sensor orientation from the linear particle motions of P‐to‐s (Ps) phases converted at the sediment–basement interface and also from T waves that are excited by earthquakes and propagate in the seawater. We examine waveforms of local earthquakes recorded by 32 ocean‐bottom seismometers (OBSs) that were deployed through free fall for three months in 2010 off Vancouver Island where the strike‐slip Nootka fault zone (NFZ) intersects the deformation front of the Cascadia subduction zone. Because the particle motion of the Ps wave was corrected by estimating splitting parameters, the fast polarization direction, which reflects S‐wave anisotropic structure within the sediment, can also be evaluated. Consequently, we could estimate the fast polarization direction at OBSs deployed near the NFZ and west of the deformation front. The obtained fast directions appeared to correspond to alignments of shear fractures in the marine sediments associated with the left‐lateral motion of the fault in the basement along the NFZ, margin‐normal cracks due to horizontal compression west of and slightly away from the deformation front, and frontal thrust faults within the accretionary prism near the deformation front.

This paper applies nonlinear Bayesian inversion to marine controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) data collected near two sites of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 311 on the northern Cascadia Margin to investigate subseafloor resistivity structure related to gas hydrate deposits and cold vents. The Cascadia margin, off the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, has a large accretionary prism where sediments are under pressure due to convergent plate boundary tectonics. Gas hydrate deposits and cold vent structures have previously been investigated by various geophysical methods and seabed drilling. Here, we invert time-domain CSEM data collected at Sites U1328 and U1329 of IODP Expedition 311 using Bayesian methods to derive subsurface resistivity model parameters and uncertainties. The Bayesian information criterion is applied to determine the amount of structure (number of layers in a depth-dependent model) that can be resolved by the data. The parameter space is sampled with the Metropolis–Hastings algorithm in principal-component space, utilizing parallel tempering to ensure wider and efficient sampling and convergence. Nonlinear inversion allows analysis of uncertain acquisition parameters such as time delays between receiver and transmitter clocks as well as input electrical current amplitude. Marginalizing over these instrument parameters in the inversion accounts for their contribution to the geophysical model uncertainties. One-dimensional inversion of time-domain CSEM data collected at measurement sites along a survey line allows interpretation of the subsurface resistivity structure. The data sets can be generally explained by models with 1 to 3 layers. Canada's second largest instrumentally recorded earthquake occurred on October 27th, 2012, off the west coast of Moresby Island, Haida Gwaii. Analysis of seismic waveforms and the pattern of aftershocks indicate that it was a thrust earthquake with a magnitude of Mw = 7.7. To accurately locate earthquakes, recording stations need to be positioned such that they surround the epicenter and the sound speed at which seismic waves travel through the earth's crust must be known. The land stations on Haida Gwaii are all to the east of the aftershock sequence, thus making these offshore earthquake locations uncertain and making depths for those events almost impossible to calculate accurately. Only sparse information from seismic refraction work conducted in the early 1980ies on the offshore velocity structure around the epicenter is known. Therefore, a series of 14 ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) were deployed for the duration of 1 month between December 6, 2012 and January 5, 2013 to record a portion of the aftershock sequence. An active source seismic program was conducted in January 2013 prior to the OBS recovery to acquire information on the sediment- and crustal structures to aid in the earthquake location analyses. However, the initial refraction data were not recorded on any of the 14 OBS as the batteries on all of the OBS stations had drained by the time of the survey. An extra set of six OBS was re-deployed and a total of four single-channel seismic profiles were acquired across these six OBS stations for a smaller-scale detailed refraction velocity experiment. Using the active source seismic data, each of the six OBS of the second deployment were re-located on the ocean floor, which is a critical pre-requisite for any velocity analysis. The OBS instruments drifted on average by 200m to the NW of the deployment drop-position. Several slope failures are observed near the deformation front on the frontal ridges of the northern Cascadia accretionary margin off Vancouver Island. The cause for these events is not clear, although several lines of evidence indicate a possible connection between the occurrence of gas hydrate and submarine landslide features. The presence of gas hydrate is indicated by a prominent bottom-simulating reflector (BSR), at a depth of ∼265–275 m beneath the seafloor (mbsf), as interpreted from vertical-incidence and wide-angle seismic data beneath the ridge crests of the frontal ridges. For one slide, informally called Slipstream Slide, the velocity structure inferred from tomography analyses shows anomalous high velocities values of about 2.0 km s−1 at shallow depths of 100 mbsf. The estimated depth of the glide plane (100 ± 10 m) closely matches the depth of these shallow high velocities. In contrast, at a frontal ridge slide just to the northwest (informally called Orca Slide), the glide plane occurs at the same depth as the current BSR. Our new results indicate that the glide plane of the Slipstream slope failure is associated with the contrast between sediments strengthened by gas hydrate and overlying sediments where little or no hydrate is present. In contrast, the glide plane of Orca Slide is between sediment strengthened by hydrate underlain by sediments beneath the gas hydrate stability zone, possibly containing free gas. Additionally, a set of margin perpendicular normal faults are imaged from seafloor down to BSR depth at both frontal ridges. As inferred from the multibeam bathymetry, the estimated volume of the material lost during the slope failure at Slipstream Slide is about 0.33 km3, and ∼0.24 km3 of this volume is present as debris material on the ocean basin floor. Several cold vents are observed at the northern Cascadia margin offshore Vancouver Island in a 10 km2 region around Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 311 Site U1328. All vents are linked to fault systems that provide pathways for upward migrating fluids and at three vents methane plumes were detected acoustically in the water column. Downhole temperature measurements at Site U1328 revealed a geothermal gradient of 0.056 ± 0.004°C/m. With the measured in situ pore-water salinities the base of methane hydrate stability is predicted at 218–245 meters below seafloor. Heat-probe measurements conducted across Site U1328 and other nearby vents showed an average thermal gradient of 0.054 ± 0.004°C/m. Assuming that the bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) marks the base of the gas hydrate stability zone variations in BSR depths were used to investigate the linkages between the base of the gas hydrate stability zone and fluid migration. Variations in BSR depth can be attributed to lithology-related velocity changes or variations of in situ pore-fluid compositions. Prominent BSR depressions and reduced heat flow are seen below topographic highs, but only a portion of the heat flow reduction can be due to topography-linked cooling. More than half of the reduction may be due to thrust faulting or to pore-water freshening. Distinct changes in BSR depth below seafloor are observed at all cold vents studied and some portion of the observed decrease in the BSR depth was attributed to fault-related upwelling of warmer fluids. The observed decrease in BSR depth below seafloor underneath the vents ranges between 7 and 24 m (equivalent to temperature shifts of 0.07–0.15°C).

We present a new three-dimensional (3-D) P-wave velocity model for the upper-crustal structure beneath the Strait of Georgia, southwestern British Columbia based on non-linear tomographic inversion of wide-angle seismic refraction data. Our study, part of the Georgia Basin Geohazards Initiative (GBGI) is primarily aimed at mapping the depth of the Cenozoic sedimentary basin and delineating the near-surface crustal faults associated with recent seismic activities (e.g. M = 4.6 in 1997 and M = 5.0 in 1975) in the region. Joint inversion of first-arrival traveltimes from the 1998 Seismic Hazards Investigation in Puget Sound (SHIPS) and the 2002 Georgia Basin experiment provides a high-resolution velocity model of the subsurface to a depth of ???7 km. In the southcentral Georgia Basin, sedimentary rocks of the Cretaceous Nanaimo Group and early Tertiary rocks have seismic velocities between 3.0 and 5.5 km s-1. The basin thickness increases from north to south with a maximum thickness of 7 (??1) km (depth to velocities of 5.5 km s-1) at the southeast end of the strait. The underlying basement rocks, probably representing the Wrangellia terrane, have velocities of 5.5-6.5 km-1 with considerable lateral variation. Our tomographic model reveals that the Strait of Georgia is underlain by a fault-bounded block within the central Georgia Basin. It also shows a correlation between microearthquakes and areas of rapid change in basin thickness. The 1997/1975 earthquakes are located near a northeast-trending hinge line where the thicknesses of sedimentary rocks increase rapidly to the southeast. Given its association with instrumentally recorded, moderate sized earthquakes, we infer that the hinge region is cored by an active fault that we informally name the Gabriola Island fault. A northwest-trending, southwest dipping velocity discontinuity along the eastern side of Vancouver Island correlates spatially with the surface expression of the Outer Island fault. A 1.5 km long, 1 km wide and 70–80 m high carbonate mound was identified on the mid-slope region of the subduction accretionary sedimentary prism offshore Vancouver Island ∼ 3.5 km west of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 889 and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1327. Seabed-video images show the presence of seafloor carbonate as well as chemosynthetic communities. A high-resolution single channel seismic survey with close line spacing, recording coherent reflectivity down to about 400 m beneath the seafloor, provided acoustic images of this mound and of the gas hydrate bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) beneath it. The mound is interpreted to have developed as a structural topographic high in the hanging wall of a large reverse fault formed at the base of the current seaward slope. The fault zone provides pathways for fluids including gas to migrate to the seafloor where diagenetic carbonate forms and cements the near-surface sediments. To examine the thermal effect of possible upward fluid flow beneath the mound, heat flow at the mound and in the neighbouring region was calculated from the depth of the BSR below the seafloor. These data were combined with heat flow calculated over a broader region from previous multi-channel seismic data. Heat flow within the flattest portion of the surrounding 4 km by 8 km region averages ∼ 74 mW/m2. Taking this value to represent the regional or background heat flow, a simple 2D analytical method was used to calculate theoretical heat flow variations due to topography. Across the mound, most of the variability is explained by topographic effects, including a local 6 mW/m2 negative anomaly over the central mound and a large 20 mW/m2 positive anomaly over the mound steep side slope. However, just south of the mound, there is a 6–7 mW/m2 positive anomaly in a 2-km-long band that has predominantly flat seafloor. This paper presents a comprehensive, multidisciplinary study of cold vents associated with near-seafloor gas hydrate. Several cold vents characterized by seismic blank zones have been identified on the northern Cascadia margin near Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 889/890. The most prominent vent site (Bullseye vent) has been the subject of intense geophysical and geochemical studies, including two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) seismic imaging, heat flow measurements, piston coring with measurements of sediment physical properties and pore-fluid geochemistry, seafloor video observation, and sampling with the unmanned submersible ROPOS. The main seismically derived constraining observations are: (1) blanking increases with seismic frequency, (2) at low frequencies, layers can be traced through the zones, (3) blank zones widen with depth, (4) blank zones are underlain by a bottom simulating reflector (BSR), and (5) no velocity anomalies were detected across the vents. Constraints from piston core and thermal probe analyses are: (1) massive hydrate was recovered just below the seafloor at Bullseye vent, and (2) chemical alteration of sediments was observed by reduced magnetic susceptibility, increased thermal conductivity, and an elevated sulfate/methane interface. Additional constraints are: (1) no thermal anomaly was observed, (2) widespread carbonates and active chemosynthetic communities were found, and (3) elevated levels of methane were detected in the water column above Bullseye vent. We present a model for the seismic blanking at Bullseye vent that honors the constraints from all observations. The cold vents represent channels or networks of filamentous fractures containing hydrate and/or free gas. Free gas can be present within the hydrate stability field only in fractures, which may be coated with hydrate that prevents the inflow of water. The overall concentration of hydrate or gas within the vent must be small, because there was no observable velocity ano
