- Abstract
Assessing and Diagnosing Speech Therapy Needs in School is a unique text that offers practical guidance in pedagogical diagnosis of speech and communication difficulties within educational settingsIt outlines theoretical assumptions of the diagnosis process and presents hands-on solutions for pedagogical and speech therapy. Underpinned by theoretical knowledge and written by experienced practitioners, the book equips its readers with tools to understand the diagnostic process and make accurate diagnoses based on each child's individual circumstances. It starts by clearly distinguishing between pedagogy and speech therapy and outlines issues and theoretical considerations in diagnosing these disorders. To contextualize the theorical observations, it goes on to present case studies, and touches upon crucial topics including readiness to start education, tendency toward aggressive behavior, aphasia and hearing loss. The authors also elaborate on a range of selected diagnostic tools to assess specific difficulties in speech and language therapy. Finally, a list of resources, including games and exercises that can target reading, writing and articulation skills to help children develop, are also featured in the book.Highlighting the importance of practical and theoretical knowledge for those who work with children, this will be a valuable aid for teachers, special educators and speech and language therapists working within school settings. The book will also be of interest to students, teachers and trainee practitioners in the fields of speech therapy and special educational needs.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book explores how speech and language therapists can use a wide range of multi-modal therapy techniques to elicit speech sound. Due to the nature of the approach, there is a limited evidence base in the area, so this book draws on the authors'extensive experience, as well as testimonials from families who have been successfully supported by the approach, to offer a new and unique perspective for therapy. By using a total communication approach, the book provides clinicians with the confidence to be more open and experimental in their practice, when traditional routes are proving unsuccessful, to best meet the needs of clients with more complex clinical backgrounds.Chapters include the following: Setting the scene. Persistent speech sound disorders. Popular techniques. Adding the extra dimension. Case studies. How to run a Total Speech group. Total Speech shares success stories of how well-known techniques can be blended to achieve progress and results. It will be a useful addition to any speech and language therapist's therapy toolkit.

- Abstract
Designed to be used either independently or alongside the ‘Words Together'storybooks, Helping Children Find Their Voices is a guide for parents and practitioners supporting children in the early stages of learning to talk, specifically to understand and use two-word sentences. Written in a friendly and reassuring tone, the book untangles questions and concerns that many parents and practitioners share around language development, such as whether children are reaching important milestones, whether they benefit from screen-time and dummies, and what to do if there might be a problem. Key features of this book include: • Chapters that can either be followed consecutively, offering tips on how to encourage first words and the combining of words into two-word sentences, or dipped in-and-out of according to the individual child's level of development • Practical information and advice rooted in theory, giving parents and practitioners the confidence and background knowledge to support communication • Activities that can be integrated into everyday interactions, giving children the opportunity to hear simple sentence structures that they can progress towards in their own speech. Also available as part of a set, with four colourful picture books, this guide is an ideal resource for early years practitioners, parents, and those working with children who have delayed speech and language development.

- Abstract
Speech and language impairment can have a huge impact on cognitive development. Identifying what is going wrong - and what effective intervention looks like - can be daunting. Short of retraining you as a speech and language therapist, this thorough guide will give you everything you need to change that.An essential resource, the book contains a wide variety of online resources, including phonological and sound awareness documents, assessment tools, and recording forms that can be downloaded straight to your device, providing excellent materials and activities to use in the classroom.Written by speech and language therapists and designed exclusively for Early Years practitioners, this book provides a complete overview of how children acquire language and what language impairments look like at this age. You will find both strategic and practical advice on how to manage and encourage the development of speech and language skills. Creating the optimum communication environment for every child in your setting is an important part of what the book offers. Equally, practitioners are supported to be able to recognise the features of specific language difficulties such as Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and feel confident to intervene when children are struggling.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
This series of wordless picture books aims to help children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) to develop their expressive sentence and narrative skills, through learning to tell each story. There are 10 stories that will be separated into two levels, geared towards advancing the child from simple to intermediate and complex sentences. The stories are written in the style of a film scroll and contain familiar events to ensure the story is understandable. The general formula of each story will be a disruption (often humorous) in familiar routines followed by resolutions. The accompanying guide will have strategies on how to teach and progress the child through each level and stage, and will have an additional skills section. Although this resource is primarily for SLCN, they could also be used for early years and reception. - Abstract
Communication is one of life's most fundamental joys, yet one often taken for granted until it is lost or fails to develop. Yet for millions of children each year, the skills that encompass communication stall or do not emerge at all. Even a mild disorder or temporary interruption in development can have long-term effects and result in serious and far-reaching deficits that touch every aspect of a child's life. Each year, millions of children and their families join the ranks of those who are navigating a life they never expected, and frequently feel they are unable to take on. While it is critical to address the child's deficits with supports and specific interventions, it is equally important to directly address the impact on the family, from the marital relationship to the well-being of siblings. With a warm and compassionate approach, Suzanne Ducharme provides parents with comprehensive information about speech and language development and the intervention process, but also delves deeply into the fears, concerns, and questions that every parent faces when something goes wrong. She provides families with information and resources, but also support and perspective. Using real stories throughout, Ducharme is able to illustrate the range of difficulties, challenges, and triumphs of families who love and support children with speech and language issues.

- Abstract

Introduction: Differentiating between normal language variation and abnormal language development can be difficult for clinicians working with young children who present with slow language development, so-called “late talkers”. Although the language difficulties of many late talkers resolve spontaneously, there is clearly a group of children whose problems persist, either for a long period or possibly permanently (after the age of five, often referred to as children with specific language impairment: SLI). There is a lack of research examining potential markers of language difficulties in young children which may enable the early detection of children at risk of SLI. The aim of this thesis was to determine the most suitable measure, or combination of measures, that can predict which late talkers at age 3;0 to 4;0 will be likely to have SLI at age 4;0 to 5;0. Methods Forty seven late talkers and 47 children with typical language development (TLD) aged from 3;0 to 4;0 were assessed on a number of language, IQ and marker tasks (baseline assessment). The children were recruited from 13 nurseries and one family centre in Aberdeen city. The children were reassessed one year later on a number of language, IQ and marker tasks (follow-up assessment). Results: Characteristics of the child or family examined were not associated with membership of the expressive language delay group at follow-up. Within the late talker group only, the Preschool Language Scale-3 Expressive Communication (PLS-3 EC) and Recalling Sentences scores at baseline were the best predictors of persistent expressive language delay at follow-up. Late talkers performance on the PLS-3 EC and Recalling Sentences tasks at age 3;0 to 4;0 has potential as predictors of persistent expressive language delay (children likely to have SLI) at age 4;0 to 5;0. Conclusions: A sizeable proportion of children identified as late talkers at age 3;0 to 4;0 have persistent language problems a year later at follow-up. The language measure PLS-3 EC has the potential to differentiate between late talkers who are going to have more persistent problems from those who recover. The marker task Recalling Sentences also has the potential to differentiate between late talkers who are going to have more persistent problems from those who recover. Given the simplicity of Recalling Sentences, this task has the potential to be a useful screening test in clinical practice although this needs to be evaluated in further research.

- Abstract
Language, Corpus and Empowerment applies a novel corpus-driven approach to the exploration of the concept of empowerment in healthcare. The book proposes an innovative corpus-based methodology for finding evidence of empowerment in language use, using data from a video intervention delivered to families of deaf children, as well as assessing the effects of the intervention on the family. Language, Corpus and Empowerment provides a working definition of empowerment which incorporates concepts from linguistics and learning theory; uses corpus analysis to provide evidence of how video interventions can transform people's perspectives; examines this new methodology as a potential tool for analysing conversational data longitudinally and at a case-by-case level; demonstrates how a corpus-based methodological approach can be applied in conjunction with other language-based approaches, such as discourse analysis and conversation analysis, to explore the ways in which complex social processes occur in interaction; makes a valuable development in the assessment of the impact of healthcare interventions and the language of empowerment. Insightful and ground-breaking, Language, Corpus and Empowerment is essential reading for anyone undertaking research within corpus linguistics.

Background: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) lack sufficient language and writing abilities and experience delays in the development of their social activities. Thus, this study aimed at determining the effects of children's pedagogical songs on the development of social as well as writing and speaking abilities in children with ASD. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test, post-test and a control group design. The study sample consisted of 30 children aged 8-10 years with ASD referring to the Welfare Organization in 2018. The necessary data were collected by the Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) and the Test of Language Development (TOLD). The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics as well as Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) and one-way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) in Manhwa Text using SPSS. Results: The present research results suggested that rhythmic poetry training was effective on the development of social activities (P<0.01), linguistic skills (P<0.01), and writing abilities (P<0.05) in the explored subjects. Conclusion: Based on the obtained results, poetry therapy increased using appropriate language skills, social skills, and written activities in children with ASD. We suggest implementing this method, as an effective intervention, in schools, health centers, and speech therapy centers for children with ASD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIALIZATION ,SPEECH disorders in children ,SPEECH therapy for children ,PRESCHOOL children ,SCHOOL children - Abstract
The relevance of the research is determined by the need to study the psychological characteristics that contribute to the successful socialization of preschoolers with speech disorders. The development of the ability to predict is considered one of the key areas for the successful socialization in children. The aim of the research was to conduct an empirical study of the socialization success factors in preschoolers with speech disorders, to identify correlations between indicators of successful socialization and prediction skills in preschoolers with speech disorders. The research involved 139 children with speech disorders aged 5-7 years. We used methods of expert assessment of children's behavior (Kazmin et al., "The scale of emotional distress and atypical behavior"); observation of children during organized and free activity (Samokhvalova); methods of studying communication and interaction with peers and adults (Semago's "Emotional Faces", Veraksa); understanding of social norms and values by a preschooler (Bayanova "Determining cultural congruence of a younger schoolchild"); study of children's prognostic activity (Peresleni, Podobed). In our empirical study, we have revealed difficulties in communication of children with speech disorders with their peers during free activity. Insularity of children with speech disorders, their high level of anxiety makes it difficult for them to adapt to new social conditions. Children using ineffective forms of "changing strategies" and "random strategies" predictions demonstrated maladaptive behavior. Children's prediction strategies turned out to be closely related to such factors of cultural congruence as "obedience" and "security", with free and organized activity of children and regime moments. The research results will help to develop the programs for socio-psychological adaptation of preschoolers with speech disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
