The goal of a speech-to-image transform is to produce a photo-realistic picture directly from a speech signal. Current approaches are based on a stacked modular framework that suffers from three vital issues: (1) Training separate networks is time-consuming, inefficient and the convergence of the final generative model depends on the previous generators; (2) The quality of precursor images is ignored; (3) Multiple discriminator networks need to be trained. We propose an efficient and effective single-stage framework called Fusion-S2iGan to yield perceptually plausible and semantically consistent image samples on the basis of spoken descriptions. Fusion-S2iGan introduces a visual+speech fusion module (VSFM), with a pixel-attention module (PAM), a speech-modulation module (SMM) and a weighted-fusion module (WFM), to inject the speech embedding from a speech encoder into the generator while improving the quality of synthesized pictures. The PAM module models the semantic affinities between pixel regions and by assigning larger weights to significant locations. The VSFM module adopts SMM to modulate visual feature maps using fine-grained linguistic cues present in the speech vector. Subsequently, the weighted-fusion model (WFM) captures the semantic importance of the image-attention mask and the speech-modulation module at the level of the channels, in an adaptive manner. Fusion-S2iGan spreads the bimodal information over all layers of the generator network to reinforce the visual feature maps at various hierarchical levels in the architecture. A series of experiments is conducted on four benchmark data sets: CUB birds, Oxford-102, Flickr8k and Places-subset. Results demonstrate the superiority of Fusion-S2iGan compared to the state-of-the-art models with a multi-stage architecture and a performance level that is close to traditional text-to-image approaches. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a condition that degenerates over time and impairs speech and pronunciation because brain cells have died. This research work aims to predict parkinson disease using the voice features extracted from speech signals recorded from PD individuals with dysphonic speech disorders by employing deep learning algorithms. PD is challenging to diagnose early on in the clinical presentation. To address the issue in machine learning methods, this paper proposes a neural network model by processing speech signals to classify PD using the University of California Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository dataset. Initially, a pre-loss reduction module is created by using pre-sampling to make the dataset balanced by reducing the dimensionality and maintaining the size of the space without influencing the learning process for data preparation. The relevant features are derived using a novel multi-agent salp swarm (MASS) algorithm, and a novel Parkinson classification neural network (PCNN) is proposed to classify Parkinson's patients with high accuracy employing these derived features. The result shows that the models that use MASS-PCNN produce higher classification accuracy of 99.1%, precision of 97.8%, recall of 94.7% and F1-score of 0.995 when paralleled to the existing models. Aims and objectives: This study examines how social information is utilized in processes of bilingual speech perception. Specifically, we investigate whether racialized expectations of native language background trigger language-specific processing strategies in early or simultaneous Spanish–English bilinguals. Methodology: We coupled a visually-primed phoneme categorization task with a social evaluation questionnaire to test whether Spanish–English bilingual adults living in the United States (n = 30) drew on racialized ideologies about what speakers of certain languages look like during speech perception. We predicted that, if participants drew on these ideologies during the phoneme categorization task, they would cue an expectation of what language was being spoken and, consequently, a shift in the identification boundary. Data and analysis: Mixed logistic regression was used to investigate the effects of photograph (the visual prime) and voice on how participants categorized the continua while paired, two-tailed t -tests were used to compare how participants socially evaluated the two speakers. Findings: Raciolinguistic evaluations appeared to influence bilingual speech perception, significantly affecting how the continua were categorized, but they did not work the same way for every voice. Originality: Prior work has posited that interactional context influences bilingual language control (e.g., Grosjean, 2001); the ideological nature of this context has, however, been understudied. This paper offers insight into how ideologies related to race may shape language perception and use in bilinguals. Implications: The findings provide evidence for the role of social information in bilingual speech perception, suggest that multiple cues (acoustic and social) integrate to determine the interactional context, and indicate that the influence of raciolinguistic ideologies is neither straightforward nor homogeneous but rather contingent on complex aspects of the perceived speaker. Purpose: There is increasing interest in the measurement of cognitive effort during listening tasks, for both research and clinical purposes. Quantification of task-evoked pupil responses (TEPRs) is a psychophysiological method that can be used to study cognitive effort. However, light level during cognitively demanding listening tasks may affect TEPRs, complicating interpretation of listening-related changes. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of light level on TEPRs during effortful listening across a range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Method: Thirty-six adults without hearing loss were asked to repeat target sentences presented in background babble noise while their pupil diameter was recorded. Light level and SNRs were manipulated in a 4 × 4 repeated-measures design. Repeated-measures analyses of variance were used to measure the effects. Results: Peak and mean dilation were typically larger in more adverse SNR conditions (except for SNR −6 dB) and smaller in higher light levels. Differences in mean and peak dilation between SNR conditions were larger in dim light than in brighter light. Conclusions: Brighter light conditions make TEPRs less sensitive to variations in listening effort across levels of SNR. Therefore, light level must be considered and reported in detail to ensure sensitivity of TEPRs and for comparisons of findings across different studies. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability to discriminate yes/no questions from statements in three groups of children: bilateral cochlear implant (CI) users, nontraditional CI users with aidable hearing preoperatively in the ear to be implanted, and controls with normal hearing. Half of the nontraditional CI users had sufficient postoperative acoustic hearing in the implanted ear to use electric–acoustic stimulation, and half used a CI alone. Method: Participants heard recorded sentences that were produced either as yes/no questions or as statements by three male and three female talkers. Three raters scored each participant response as either a question or a statement. Bilateral CI users (n = 40, 4–12 years old) and normal-hearing controls (n = 10, 4– 12 years old) were tested binaurally in the free field. Nontraditional CI recipients (n = 22, 6–17 years old) were tested with direct audio input to the study ear. Results: For the bilateral CI users, performance was predicted by age but not by 125-Hz acoustic thresholds; just under half (n = 17) of the participants in this group had measurable 125-Hz thresholds in their better ear. For nontraditional CI recipients, better performance was predicted by lower 125-Hz acoustic thresholds in the test ear, and there was no association with participant age. Performance approached that of the normal-hearing controls for some participants in each group. Conclusions: Results suggest that a 125-Hz acoustic hearing supports discrimination of yes/no questions and statements in pediatric CI users. Bilateral CI users with little or no acoustic hearing at 125 Hz develop the ability to perform this task, but that ability emerges later than for children with better acoustic hearing. Purpose: Military-affiliated individuals (MIs) are at a higher risk of developing hearing loss and tinnitus. While these disorders are well-studied in MIs, their impact relative to non--military-affiliated individuals (non-MIs) remains understudied. Our study compared hearing, speech-in-noise (SIN) perception, and tinnitus characteristics between MIs and non-MIs. Method: MIs (n = 84) and non-MIs (n = 193) underwent hearing threshold assessment and Quick Speech-in-Noise Test. Participants with tinnitus completed psychoacoustic tinnitus matching, numeric rating scale (NRS) for loudness and annoyance, and Tinnitus Functional Index. Comorbid conditions such as anxiety, depression, and hyperacusis were assessed. We used a linear mixed-effects model to compare hearing thresholds and SIN scores between MIs and non-MIs. A multivariate analysis of variance compared tinnitus characteristics between MIs and non-MIs, and a stepwise regression was performed to identify predictors of tinnitus severity. Results: MIs exhibited better hearing sensitivity than non-MIs; however, their SIN scores were similar. MIs matched their tinnitus loudness to a lower intensity than non-MIs, but their loudness ratings (NRS) were comparable. MIs reported greater tinnitus annoyance and severity on the relaxation subscale, indicating increased difficulty engaging in restful activities. Tinnitus severity was influenced by hyperacusis and depression in both MIs and non-MIs; however, hearing loss uniquely contributed to severity in MIs. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that while MIs may exhibit better or comparable listening abilities, they were significantly more affected by tinnitus than non-MIs. Furthermore, our study highlights the importance of assessing tinnitus-related distress across multiple dimensions, facilitating customization of management strategies for both MIs and non-MIs. Purpose: This project addressed the uses of a loudspeaker array for audiometric measurements. It sought to evaluate a prototype compact array in terms of the reliability of test results across sound booths. Method: A seven-loudspeaker array was developed to deliver sounds from -60° to +60° on an arc with a radius of 0.5 m. The system was equipped with a head position sensing system to maintain the listener's head near the optimal test position. Three array systems were distributed to each of the two test sites for within-subject assessments of booth equivalence on tests of sound localization, speech reception in noise, and threshold detection. A total of 36 subjects participated, 18 at each test site. Results: Results showed excellent interbooth consistency on tests of sound localization using speech and noise signals, including conditions in which one or both ears were covered with a muff. Booth consistency was also excellent on sound field threshold measurements for detecting quasi-diffuse noise bands. Nonequivalence was observed in some cases of speech-in-noise tests, particularly with a small one-person booth. Acoustic analyses of in situ loudspeaker responses indicated that some of the nonequivalent comparisons on speech-innoise tests could be traced to the effects of reflections. Conclusions: Overall, the results demonstrate the utility and reliability of a compact array for the assessment of localization ability, speech reception in noise, and sound field thresholds. However, the results indicate that researchers and clinicians should be aware of the reflection effects that can influence the results of sound field tests in which signal and noise levels from separate loudspeakers are critical. Purpose: Telehealth has proven effective for service delivery to remote and rural locations and was helpful during lockdowns when patients were unable to see clinicians in person. To assure the reliability of clinical services, the aim of the present study was to evaluate a telehealth protocol to measure speech perception skills through virtual meeting applications such as Zoom. Method: A total of 20 participants with normal hearing and cognition participated in the study. Participants' speech perception performance was measured in two sessions: one over a Zoom call and one in person in the laboratory. Speech perception was measured using Quick Speech-in-Noise Test, Bamford-- Kowal--Bench Speech-in-Noise Test, and Words-in-Noise Test. Results: Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences between speech perception scores obtained over the Zoom and in-person methodologies for any of the tests. Additionally, our study found no significant difference in the scores obtained between wired and wireless headphones during Zoom calls. Conclusion: These results suggest that Zoom can be used as a reliable method to measure speech perception in young individuals with normal hearing using these three tests in situations where conventional methods cannot be utilized. Purpose: This study examined children's ability to perceive speech from multiple locations on the horizontal plane. Children with hearing loss were compared to normal-hearing peers while using amplification with and without advanced noise management. Method: Participants were 21 children with normal hearing (9-15 years) and 12 children with moderate symmetrical hearing loss (11-15 years). Word recognition, nonword detection, and word recall were assessed. Stimuli were presented randomly from multiple discrete locations in multitalker noise. Children with hearing loss were fit with devices having separate omnidirectional and noise management programs. The noise management feature is designed to preserve audibility in noise by rapidly analyzing input from all locations and reducing the noise management when speech is detected from locations around the hearing aid user. Results: Significant effects of left/right and front/back lateralization occurred as well as effects of hearing loss and hearing aid noise management. Children with normal hearing experienced a left-side advantage for word recognition and a right-side advantage for nonword detection. Children with hearing loss demonstrated poorer performance overall on all tasks with better word recognition from the back, and word recall from the right, in the omnidirectional condition. With noise management, performance improved from the front compared to the back for all three tasks and from the right for word recognition and word recall. Conclusions: The shape of children's local speech intelligibility on the horizontal plane is not omnidirectional. It is task dependent and shaped further by hearing loss and hearing aid signal processing. Front/back shifts in children with hearing loss are consistent with the behavior of hearing aid noise management, while the right-side biases observed in both groups are consistent with the effects of specialized speech processing in the left hemisphere of the brain. To investigate the extent to which Headphone Accommodations in Apple AirPods Pro attend to the hearing needs of individuals with normal audiograms who experience hearing difficulties in noisy environments. Single-arm interventional study using acoustic measures, speech-in-noise laboratory testing, and real-world measures via questionnaires and ecological momentary assessment. Seventeen normal-hearing individuals (9 female, 21–59 years) with self-reported hearing-in-noise difficulties. Acoustic measures showed that, relative to unaided, AirPods Pro provided a SNR advantage of +5.4 dB. Speech intelligibility performance in laboratory testing increased 11.8% with AirPods Pro, relative to unaided. On average, participants trialling AirPods Pro in real-world noisy venues reported that their overall hearing experience was a bit better than without them. Five participants (29%) reported that they would continue using AirPods Pro in the future. The most relevant barriers that would discourage their future use were limited hearing benefit, discomfort, and stigma. Occasional use of AirPods Pro may help some individuals with normal audiograms ameliorate their speech-in-noise hearing difficulties. The identified barriers may inspire the development of new technological solutions aimed at providing an optimal management strategy for the hearing difficulties of this segment of the population. Differences between autistic and non‐autistic individuals in perception of the temporal relationships between sights and sounds are theorized to underlie difficulties in integrating relevant sensory information. These, in turn, are thought to contribute to problems with speech perception and higher level social behaviour. However, the literature establishing this connection often involves limited sample sizes and focuses almost entirely on children. To determine whether these differences persist into adulthood, we compared 496 autistic and 373 non‐autistic adults (aged 17 to 75 years). Participants completed an online version of the McGurk/MacDonald paradigm, a multisensory illusion indicative of the ability to integrate audiovisual speech stimuli. Audiovisual asynchrony was manipulated, and participants responded both to the syllable they perceived (revealing their susceptibility to the illusion) and to whether or not the audio and video were synchronized (allowing insight into temporal processing). In contrast with prior research with smaller, younger samples, we detected no evidence of impaired temporal or multisensory processing in autistic adults. Instead, we found that in both groups, multisensory integration correlated strongly with age. This contradicts prior presumptions that differences in multisensory perception persist and even increase in magnitude over the lifespan of autistic individuals. It also suggests that the compensatory role multisensory integration may play as the individual senses decline with age is intact. These findings challenge existing theories and provide an optimistic perspective on autistic development. Listeners adapt efficiently to new talkers by using lexical knowledge to resolve perceptual uncertainty. This adaptation has been widely observed, both in first (L1) and in second languages (L2). Here, adaptation was tested in both the L1 and L2 of speakers of Mandarin and English, two very dissimilar languages. A sound midway between /f/ and /s/ replacing either /f/ or /s/ in Mandarin words presented for lexical decision (e.g., bu4fa3 "illegal"; kuan1song1 "loose") prompted the expected adaptation; it induced an expanded /f/ category in phoneme categorization when it had replaced /f/, but an expanded /s/ category when it had replaced /s/. Both L1 listeners and English-native listeners with L2 Mandarin showed this effect. In English, however (with e.g., traffic; insane), we observed adaptation in L1 but not in L2; Mandarin-native listeners, despite scoring highly in the English lexical decision training, did not adapt their category boundaries for /f/ and /s/. Whether the ambiguous sound appeared syllable-initially (as in Mandarin phonology) versus word-finally (providing more word identity information) made no difference. Perceptual learning for talker adaptation is language-specific in that successful lexically guided adaptation in one language does not guarantee adaptation in other known languages; the enabling conditions for adaptation may be multiple and diverse. Prosodic aspects of cross-linguistic contact are under-researched, especially past contact that has subsequently ceased. In this paper, we investigate declarative and polar question tunes of contemporary Cretan Greek, a regional variety of Greek whose speakers were in contact with Venetian speakers during the four and half centuries of Venetian rule on the island, from 1204 to 1669. The F0 contours of the Cretan tunes and alignment of peaks and troughs of interest with the nuclear vowel are compared to the corresponding tunes in Venetian dialect and Venetian Italian and to those in Athenian (Standard) Greek, which are used as control. The data (1610 declarative utterances and 698 polar questions) were drawn from natural speech corpora based on pragmatic criteria: broad focus for declaratives, broad focus, and information-seeking interpretation for polar questions. The pitch contour shapes of the tunes are modeled using polynomial basis functions, and the F0 alignment points are determined analytically. The results show the robustness of contact effects almost three and a half centuries after regular contact ceased and indicate that the shapes of the F0 contours of Cretan and Venetian declarative and polar question tunes are similar. In addition, Cretan alignment patterns are similar to Venetian and significantly different from Athenian. Automatic conversion of sign language into text or speech can be really useful in communicating among deaf or mute people with no sign language knowledge. The present need is to create an automated system that can translate ISL signals into regular text and vice versa. It is advantageous for both groups to communicate their needs to one another while using publicly accessible services, such as banking, traffic signaling, and ticketing. In this manuscript, Indian Sign Language Recognition using Transfer Learning with Efficient Net (ISLR-EfficientNetB0) is proposed for Indian sign language recognition. Initially, the input images are gathered via the Indian Sign Language (ISL) dataset. The input image is pre-processing by Fairness-aware Collaborative Filtering (FACF) method. In pre-processing stage noise are removed from input images and image resizing is done. Then, Efficient Net B0 is employed to identify ISL. The proposed model is implemented on Python. Then the efficiency of the proposed approach is compared with existing models. The accuracy, precision, specificity, sensitivity, F1-score, computational time, error rate and RoC of the suggested approaches are all assessed. The proposed ISLR-EfficientNetB0 method attains 31.42%, 26.04%, and 20.45% higher accuracy, 19.24%, 26.35%, and 24.02% higher precision, 15.84%, 18.91%, and 28.16% higher specificity and 17.06%, 21.36%, and 32.47% higher sensitivity compared with existing methods, such as Indian sign language recognition under machine learning methods (ISLR-KNN), ISL recognition scheme utilizing SURF with SVM and CNN (ISLR-SVM-CNN) and Benchmarking deep neural network methods for ISL recognition (ISLR-VGG16) respectively. • A larger positive mismatch response (P-MMR) at birth is associated with better development of prereading skills. • A more mature pattern of neural auditory speech discrimination is associated with a better development of pre-reading skills. • Familial dyslexia risk affects the development of pre-reading skills and their associations with MMRs. We investigated how infant mismatch responses (MMRs), which have the potential for providing information on auditory discrimination abilities, could predict subsequent development of pre-reading skills and the risk for familial dyslexia. We recorded MMRs to vowel, duration, and frequency deviants in pseudo-words at birth and 28 months in a sample over-represented by infants with dyslexia risk. We examined MMRs' associations with pre-reading skills at 28 months and 4–5 years and compared the results in subgroups with vs. without dyslexia risk. Larger positive MMR (P-MMR) at birth was found to be associated with better serial naming. In addition, increased mismatch negativity (MMN) and late discriminative negativity (LDN), and decreased P-MMR at 28 months overall, were shown to be related to better pre-reading skills. The associations were influenced by dyslexia risk, which was also linked to poor pre-reading skills. Infant MMRs, providing information about the maturity of the auditory system, are associated with the development of pre-reading skills. Speech-processing deficits may contribute to deficits in language acquisition observed in dyslexia. Infant MMRs could work as predictive markers of atypical linguistic development during early childhood. This research article describes the HAPOVER (a haptic pronunciation improver device), which was produced to help second language learners' pronunciation skills as part of their foreign language learning process. The device comprises eight independent vibration motors connected to the fingers other than the thumb. The developed tactile feedback device was utilized to enhance pronunciation via speech processing and using vibration motor. The acoustic difference between the reference and the participant's recorded pronunciation signal was calculated with the help of Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and converted into haptic codes that guide the speaker. The article describes the haptic codes' features and the creation method thereof. The device was tested by psychophysical evaluation. The results indicate an 80.74% improvement in word pronunciation with haptic guidance post training. The extraction of weak acoustic signals under strong background noise is of great significance in the applications of target identification and localization. In this paper, the pulse signal with high randomness is set as the weak signal sound source, random noise and sine sound are used as the background noise. Under the condition of a signal-to-noise ratio of −20 dB, combined with blind source separation and neural network methods, the collected observation signals are subjected to weak sound signal separation and recognition research. The optimization method of centralization and scaling processing is used to eliminate the unfavorable influence of the uncertainty of the separated signal amplitude caused by the blind source separation method on the pattern recognition. The recognition result is verified by the combination of "weak impulse acoustic signal" and "random noise signal," and the output vector (0.99 0.01 0.01) approaches (1 0 0), which is recognized as impulse acoustic signal. By combining blind source separation and neural network methods, the separation and identification of weak pulse signals under the condition of a signal-to-noise ratio of −20 dB can be achieved. Relevant visual information is available in speakers' faces during face-to-face interactions that improve speech perception. There is an ongoing debate, however, about how phonemes and their visual counterparts, visemes are mapped. An influential hypothesis claims that several phonemes can be mapped into a single visemic category (many-to-one phoneme-viseme mapping). In contrast, recent findings have challenged this view, reporting evidence for sub-visemic syllable discrimination. We aim to investigate whether Spanish words from the same visemic category can be identified or not. We designed a lip-reading task in which participants had to identify target words presented in silent video clips among 3 distractors differing in their visual resemblance from the target. Target words were identified above chance and significantly more than distractors from the same visemic category. Moreover, the error rate for distractors significantly decreased with decreasing visemic resemblance to the target. These results challenge the many-to-one phoneme-viseme mapping hypothesis. This study examined whether intelligibility-enhancing hyperarticulated clear speaking styles improve word segmentation during real-time speech processing in quiet and in noise. English-speaking listeners heard clearly and conversationally spoken sentences in which the target (e.g. ham) was temporarily ambiguous with a competitor (e.g. hamster) across a word boundary (e.g. ham starting) while their eye fixations to target and competitor images were recorded. Relative to conversational speech, clear speech led listeners to fixate the target image over the competitor image to a greater degree, indicating facilitation of word segmentation. Such facilitation emerged in quiet and in noise even before disambiguating segmental information (e.g. /ɑ/ in starting) was available. A parallel clear speech benefit was not found when the disyllabic word (e.g. hamster) was the target. The findings suggest that improved word segmentation partly underlies the well-documented clear speech perceptual and cognitive benefits and may arise from the enhancements of multiple word boundary cues. Since the issuance of the emergency use authorization (EUA) of 3 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, there have been over 180 million individuals fully vaccinated in the United States (US). With the increasing administration of COVID-19 vaccinations, there have been over 550,000 adverse events reported in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) with approximately 230,000 experienced after receipt of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine as of September 23rd 2021. Audio-vestibular symptoms (including Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL)) secondary to immunizations has previously been evaluated. However, this report describes the first case of bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss potentially due to the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. End-to-end speech translation (ST) has attracted substantial attention due to its less error accumulation and lower latency. Based on triplet ST data ⟨ speech-transcription-translation ⟩ , multitask learning (MTL) that utilizes machine translation ⟨ transcription-translation ⟩ or automatic speech recognition ⟨ speech-transcription ⟩ task to assist in training ST model is widely employed. However, current MTL methods often suffer from subnet role mismatch, semantic inconsistency, or usually focus only on transferring knowledge from automatic speech recognition (ASR) or machine translation (MT) task, leading to insufficient transferring of cross-task knowledge. To solve these problems, we propose the multitask co-training network (MCTN) to jointly model ST, MT, and ASR tasks. Specifically, the ASR task enables the acoustic encoder to better capture local information of speech frames, and the MT task enhances the translation capability of the model. MCTN benefits from three key aspects: a well-designed multitask framework to fully exploit the association between tasks, a model decoupling and parameter sharing method to maintain consistency in subnet roles, and a co-training strategy to utilize task information in triplet ST data. Our experiments show that MCTN achieves state-of-the-art results, when using only MuST-C dataset, and significantly outperforms strong end-to-end ST baselines and cascaded systems when external data are available. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) can do inference with low power consumption due to their spike sparsity. Although SNNs can be combined with neuromorphic hardware to achieve efficient inference, they are often difficult to train directly due to discrete non-differentiable spikes. As an alternative, ANN-SNN conversion is an efficient way to achieve deep SNNs by converting well-trained artificial neural networks (ANNs). However, the existing methods commonly use constant threshold for conversion. A high constant threshold value prevents neurons from rapidly delivering spikes to deeper layers and causes high time delay. In addition, the same response for different inputs may result in information loss during the information transmission. Inspired by the biological adaptive threshold mechanism, we propose a multistage adaptive threshold (MSAT) method to alleviate this problem. Instead of using a single, constant value, the threshold is adjusted in multistages, adapting to each neuron's firing history and input properties. Specifically, for each neuron, the dynamic threshold is positively correlated with the average membrane potential and negatively correlated with the rate of depolarization. The adaptation to membrane potential and input allows a timely adjustment of the threshold to fire spikes faster and transmit more information. Moreover, we analyze the spikes of inactivated neurons error, which is pervasive in early time steps. We also propose spike confidence accordingly to measure confidence about the neurons that correctly deliver spikes. Such spike confidence in early time steps is used to determine whether to elicit the spike to alleviate the spikes of inactivated neurons error. Combined with the proposed methods, we examine the performance on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet datasets. We also conduct sentiment classification and speech recognition experiments on the IDBM and Google speech commands datasets, respectively. Experiments show that our methods can achieve near-lossless and lower latency ANN-SNN conversion. In summary, we build a biologically inspired multistage adaptive threshold for converted SNN, with comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods while improving energy efficiency. Objectives: Current evidence supports the benefits of cochlear implants (CIs) in children with hearing loss, including those with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD). However, there is limited evidence regarding factors that hold predictive value for intervention outcomes. Design: This retrospective case-control study consisted of 66 children with CIs, including 22 with ANSD and 44 with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) matched on sex, age, age at CI activation, and the length of follow-up with CIs (1:2 ratio). The case and control groups were compared in the results of five open-set speech perception tests, and a Forward Linear Regression Model was used to identify factors that can predict the post-CI outcomes. Results: There was no significant difference in average scores between the two groups across five outcome measures, ranging from 88.40% to 95.65%. The correlation matrix revealed that younger ages at hearing aid fitting and CI activation positively influenced improvements in speech perception test scores. Furthermore, among the variables incorporated in the regression model, the duration of follow-up with CIs, age at CI activation, and the utilization of two CIs demonstrated prognostic significance for improved post-CI speech perception outcomes. Conclusions: Children with ANSD can achieve similar open-set speech perception outcomes as children with SNHL. Autosomal recessive deafness 9, caused by mutations of the OTOF gene, is characterised by congenital or prelingual, severe-to-complete, bilateral hearing loss. However, no pharmacological treatment is currently available for congenital deafness. In this Article, we report the safety and efficacy of gene therapy with an adeno-associated virus (AAV) serotype 1 carrying a human OTOF transgene (AAV1-hOTOF) as a treatment for children with autosomal recessive deafness 9. This single-arm, single-centre trial enrolled children (aged 1–18 years) with severe-to-complete hearing loss and confirmed mutations in both alleles of OTOF , and without bilateral cochlear implants. A single injection of AAV1-hOTOF was administered into the cochlea through the round window. The primary endpoint was dose-limiting toxicity at 6 weeks after injection. Auditory function and speech were assessed by appropriate auditory perception evaluation tools. All analyses were done according to the intention-to-treat principle. This trial is registered with Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2200063181, and is ongoing. Between Oct 19, 2022, and June 9, 2023, we screened 425 participants for eligibility and enrolled six children for AAV1-hOTOF gene therapy (one received a dose of 9 × 1011 vector genomes [vg] and five received 1·5 × 1012 vg). All participants completed follow-up visits up to week 26. No dose-limiting toxicity or serious adverse events occurred. In total, 48 adverse events were observed; 46 (96%) were grade 1–2 and two (4%) were grade 3 (decreased neutrophil count in one participant). Five children had hearing recovery, shown by a 40–57 dB reduction in the average auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds at 0·5–4·0 kHz. In the participant who received the 9 × 1011 vg dose, the average ABR threshold was improved from greater than 95 dB at baseline to 68 dB at 4 weeks, 53 dB at 13 weeks, and 45 dB at 26 weeks. In those who received 1·5 × 1012 AAV1-hOTOF, the average ABR thresholds changed from greater than 95 dB at baseline to 48 dB, 38 dB, 40 dB, and 55 dB in four children with hearing recovery at 26 weeks. Participants with hearing loss underwent testing in two device conditions: hearing aids (HAs) alone and HAs with a RM. Normal hearing participants completed testing in the unaided condition. Predictive speech intelligibility modelling using the Hearing-Aid Speech Perception Index (HASPI) was also performed on recordings of HA processed test material.Twenty adults with sensory hearing loss and 10 adults with normal hearing participated.Speech recognition for participants with hearing loss improved significantly when using the RM compared to HAs alone fit to Phonak’s proprietary prescription. Largest benefits were observed in the most challenging conditions. At the lowest signal-to-noise ratio, participants with hearing loss using a RM outperformed normal hearing listeners. Predicted intelligibility scores produced by HASPI were strongly correlated to behavioural results.Adults using HAs who have significant difficulties understanding speech in noise will experience considerable benefits with the addition of a RM. The stimuli were presented in a monaural and binaural condition (SSN) or a co-located and spatially separated condition (TTS). Based on the available medical records, overall OM duration, OM onset age, and time since the last OM episode were estimated.6–13-year-olds with a history of recurrent OM (N = 42) or without any ear diseases (N = 20) with normal tympanograms and audiograms at the time of testing.Mixed-model regression analyses that controlled for age showed poorer SRTs for the OM group (Δ-value = 0.84 dB, p = 0.009). These appeared driven by the spatially separated, binaural, and monaural conditions. Some listeners exhibit higher sensitivity to subphonemic acoustic differences (i.e., higher speech gradiency). Here, we asked whether higher gradiency in a listener's first language (L1) facilitates foreign language learning and explored the possible sources of individual differences in L1 gradiency. To address these questions, we tested 164 native Spanish speakers with different linguistic profiles. Speech gradiency was assessed via a Visual Analogue Scale task, and foreign language proficiency was assessed via an English vocabulary test. Possible sources of gradiency included domain‐general auditory acuity, overall exposure to spoken language (indexed by age), and exposure to phonological diversity. Control measures were collected to account for variables such as phoneme categorization consistency, working memory, and musical training. The results revealed a positive link between L1 speech gradiency and vocabulary acquisition in a foreign language over and above all other variables. The inferior colliculus (IC) of the midbrain is important for complex sound processing, such as discriminating conspecific vocalizations and human speech. The IC's nonlemniscal, dorsal "shell" region is likely important for this process, as neurons in these layers project to higher-order thalamic nuclei that subsequently funnel acoustic signals to the amygdala and nonprimary auditory cortices, forebrain circuits important for vocalization coding in a variety of mammals, including humans. However, the extent to which shell IC neurons transmit acoustic features necessary to discern vocalizations is less clear, owing to the technical difficulty of recording from neurons in the IC's superficial layers via traditional approaches. Here, we use two-photon Ca2+ imaging in mice of either sex to test how shell IC neuron populations encode the rate and depth of amplitude modulation, important sound cues for speech perception. Most shell IC neurons were broadly tuned, with a low neurometric discrimination of amplitude modulation rate; only a subset was highly selective to specific modulation rates. Nevertheless, neural network classifier trained on fluorescence data from shell IC neuron populations accurately classified amplitude modulation rate, and decoding accuracy was only marginally reduced when highly tuned neurons were omitted from training data. Rather, classifier accuracy increased monotonically with the modulation depth of the training data, such that classifiers trained on full-depth modulated sounds had median decoding errors of ∼0.2 octaves. Thus, shell IC neurons may transmit time-varying signals via a population code, with perhaps limited reliance on the discriminative capacity of any individual neuron. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: The IC's shell layers originate a "nonlemniscal" pathway important for perceiving vocalization sounds. However, prior studies suggest that individual shell IC neurons are broadly tuned and have high response thresholds, implying a limited reliability of efferent signals. Background: Auditory neuropathy (AN) is a nosological entity of unknown etiology, which is associated with fluctuations in rates of speech discrimination. Its diagnosis is based on presence of otoacoustic emissions and lack of, or abnormal, brainstem auditory evoked potential. With respect to treatment, we have variable results in the literature about development of speech perception and skills, in children with AN and cochlear implant (CI) rehabilitation. Objectives: Comparatively assessing results recorded for the development of auditory and speech skills in children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD), who were subjected to cochlear implantation, in comparison to results recorded for children with sensorineural hearing loss associated with other causes was the objective of this study. Method: A systematic literature review with meta-analysis was performed, with studies published from 1975 to 2023. Results: Nineteen studies were included in the systematic review, and eight were selected for the meta-analysis, which showed there was no evidence allowing the conclusion that the two groups were different from each other about results in speech performance after 1 year of CI placement. The speech perception ability of people with hearing loss can be efficiently measured using phonemic-level scoring. We aimed to develop linguistic stimuli suitable for a closed-set phonemic discrimination test in the Swedish language called the Situated Phoneme (SiP) test. The SiP test stimuli that we developed consisted of real monosyllabic words with minimal phonemic contrast, realised by phonetically similar phones. The lexical and sublexical factors of word frequency, phonological neighbourhood density, phonotactic probability, and orthographic transparency were similar between all contrasting words. Each test word was recorded five times by two different speakers, including one male and one female. The accuracy of the test-word recordings was evaluated by 28 normal-hearing subjects in a listening experiment with a silent background using a closed-set design. With a few exceptions, all test words could be correctly discriminated. We discuss the results in terms of content- and construct-validity implications for the Swedish SiP test. Speakers tailor their speech to different types of interlocutors. For example, speech directed to voice technology has different acoustic-phonetic characteristics than speech directed to a human. The present study investigates the perceptual consequences of human- and device-directed registers in English. We compare two groups of speakers: participants whose first language is English (L1) and bilingual L1 Mandarin-L2 English talkers. Participants produced short sentences in several conditions: an initial production and a repeat production after a human or device guise indicated either understanding or misunderstanding. In experiment 1, a separate group of L1 English listeners heard these sentences and transcribed the target words. In experiment 2, the same productions were transcribed by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system. Results show that transcription accuracy was highest for L1 talkers for both human and ASR transcribers. Furthermore, there were no overall differences in transcription accuracy between human- and device-directed speech. Finally, while human listeners showed an intelligibility benefit for coda repair productions, the ASR transcriber did not benefit from these enhancements. We recently reported strong, replicable (i.e., replicated) evidence for lexically mediated compensation for coarticulation (LCfC; Luthra et al., 2021), whereby lexical knowledge influences a prelexical process. Critically, evidence for LCfC provides robust support for interactive models of cognition that include top‐down feedback and is inconsistent with autonomous models that allow only feedforward processing. McQueen, Jesse, and Mitterer (2023) offer five counter‐arguments against our interpretation; we respond to each of those arguments here and conclude that top‐down feedback provides the most parsimonious explanation of extant data. Objectives: There is a limited understanding of the impact of cochlear implantation (CI) in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), given the scarcity of reported cases. We aim to evaluate the audiological outcomes and quality of life (QoL) after CI in CMT. Methods: Multi-institutional, university-affiliated, tertiary-referral centers, retrospective chart review. Our cohort includes 5 patients with CMT. Patients' charts were reviewed for demographic characteristics, operation notes, and pre- and post-implantation audiology evaluation. Patients completed the Cochlear Implant Quality of Life-10 (CIQOL-10) Global questionnaire. Results: Pre-implantation, the mean pure tone average was 84.1 ± 7.2 dB, and the mean word recognition score was 2.4% in the implanted ear. AzBio sentence test was performed in quiet, revealing a mean of 4 ± 1.4% in the implanted ear. Post-implantation, PTA results were all within the mild hearing loss range (mean 33.0 ± 5.9 dB). Post-CI, AZ-Bio test results were 5%, 65%, and 74% (for 3 patients), and HINT scores were 55% and 58% (for 2 patients). The mean score of the CIQOL-10 questionnaire was 42.7 ± 10.47 (range 1-100). Patients were most satisfied with their ability to listen to the television or radio, have conversations in a quiet environment, and feel comfortable being themselves. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the most extensive series of CI in CMT-associated sensorineural hearing loss and auditory neuropathy. Objective: Stimuli received beyond a very short timeframe, known as temporal binding windows (TBWs), are perceived as separate events. In previous audio‐visual multisensory integration (McGurk effect) studies, widening of TBWs has been observed in people with schizophrenia. The present study aimed to determine if dexamphetamine could increase TBWs in unimodal auditory and unimodal visual illusions that may have some validity as experimental models for auditory and visual hallucinations in psychotic disorders. Methods: A double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, counter‐balanced crossover design with permuted block randomisation for drug order was followed. Dexamphetamine (0.45 mg/kg, PO, q.d.) was administered to healthy participants. Phantom word illusion (speech illusion) and visual‐induced flash illusion/VIFI (visual illusion) tests were measured to determine if TBWs were altered as a function of delay between stimuli presentations. Word emotional content for phantom word illusions was also analysed. Results: Dexamphetamine significantly increased the total number of phantom words/speech illusions (p < 0.01) for pooled 220–1100 ms ISIs in kernel density estimation and the number of positive valence words heard (beta = 2.20, 95% CI [1.86, 2.55], t = 12.46, p < 0.001) with a large effect size (std. beta = 1.05, 95% CI [0.89, 1.22]) relative to placebo without affecting the TBWs. For the VIFI test, kernel density estimation for pooled 0–801 ms ISIs showed a significant difference (p < 0.01) in the data distributions of number of target flash (es) perceived by participants after receiving dexamphetamine as compared with placebo. Conclusions: Overall, healthy participants who were administered dexamphetamine (0.45 mg/kg, PO, q.d.) experienced increases in auditory and visual illusions in both phantom word illusion and VIFI tests without affecting their TBWs. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been central to the Deep Learning revolution and played a key role in initiating the new age of Artificial Intelligence. However, in recent years newer architectures such as Transformers have dominated both research and practical applications. While CNNs still play critical roles in many of the newer developments such as Generative AI, they are far from being thoroughly understood and utilised to their full potential. Here we show that CNNs can recognise patterns in images with scattered pixels and can be used to analyse complex datasets by transforming them into pseudo images with minimal processing for any high dimensional dataset, representing a more general approach to the application of CNNs to datasets such as in molecular biology, text, and speech. We introduce a pipeline called DeepMapper, which allows analysis of very high dimensional datasets without intermediate filtering and dimension reduction, thus preserving the full texture of the data, enabling detection of small variations normally deemed 'noise'. We demonstrate that DeepMapper can identify very small perturbations in large datasets with mostly random variables, and that it is superior in speed and on par in accuracy to prior work in processing large datasets with large numbers of features. In this study, from the perspective of English speech feature parameters, two feature parameters, the mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) and filter bank (Fbank), were selected to identify English speech. The algorithms used for recognition employed the classical back-propagation neural network (BPNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), and long short-term memory (LSTM) that were obtained by improving RNN. The three recognition algorithms were compared in the experiments, and the effects of the two feature parameters on the performance of the recognition algorithms were also compared. The LSTM model had the best identification performance among the three neural networks under different experimental environments; the neural network model using the MFCC feature parameter outperformed the neural network using the Fbank feature parameter; the LSTM model had the highest correct rate and the highest speed, while the RNN model ranked second, and the BPNN model ranked worst. The results confirm that the application of the LSTM model in combination with MFCC feature parameter extraction to English speech recognition can achieve higher speech recognition accuracy compared to other neural networks. Background: People with aphasia (PWA) frequently experience difficulties in understanding longer written content such as paragraphs or books. Reading strategies are a promising approach to treat text‐level reading comprehension deficits in PWA. Nevertheless, empirical evidence for their efficacy remains rare. Aims: The primary objective of this study was to analyse the efficacy of a strategy‐based intervention on text‐level reading comprehension in PWA. Secondary objectives were to compare the effects of two strategy‐based intervention components and to explore potential moderator effects. Methods & Procedures: A protocol was published prior to data acquisition. In a repeated measures trial, 26 German participants with chronic, post‐stroke aphasia participated in a waiting period without aphasia treatment (control condition) followed by a strategy‐based intervention called 'Strategiebasierte Textverständnis‐Therapie bei Aphasie' (StraTexT, 14 face‐to‐face‐sessions, twice per week, 60 min each). Two strategy combinations, Intervention Micro targeting microstructure and Intervention Macro targeting macrostructure, were applied to newspaper and magazine articles. Participants were randomly allocated to two parallel groups that received these strategy combinations in interchanged sequences. Assessments were implemented before and after each period as well as 3 and 6 months after the intervention. The primary outcome measure was text‐level reading comprehension measured with the total score of a German version of the Test de Compréhension de Textes (TCT‐D). Secondary outcome measures addressed the self‐reported perception of reading abilities, reading activities and feelings about reading (German version of the Comprehensive Assessment of Reading in Aphasia CARA reading questionnaire) as well as selected cognitive functions. Outcomes & Results: The per‐protocol‐analysis included data from 22 participants. We found significant small improvements up to 6 months post‐intervention compared to pre‐intervention in the TCT‐D Total (d = 0.35–0.46) as well as medium to large improvements in the CARA questionnaire (d = 0.68–0.96). Up to 3 months after the intervention, treatment‐induced improvements in the TCT‐D Total were significantly larger than change without treatment during the control condition. There was no evidence of moderator effects. Furthermore, we found improvements in several cognitive functions. Conclusions & Implications: Reading strategies can lead to long‐term improvements in text‐level reading comprehension and in self‐reported reading abilities, feelings about reading and reading activities in aphasia. In regular clinical settings, it seems reasonable to implement both Intervention Micro and Intervention Macro. It remains important to investigate participant characteristics that contribute to treatment success. What this study adds: This study provides the first group‐level evidence about the efficacy of a systematic strategy‐based intervention in 22 people with post‐stroke chronic aphasia. During 14 treatment sessions, participants applied four reading strategies to newspaper and magazine articles within two intervention components called Intervention Micro and Intervention Macro (two strategies per intervention component). We found improvements in text‐level reading comprehension for at least 3 months post‐intervention, as well as effects on selected cognitive functions and self‐reported reading abilities, thoughts and feelings about reading and the ability to engage in reading activities. What are the clinical implications of this work?: The strategies and materials evaluated in this study could be used in clinical practice with people with aphasia. In order to replicate treatment effects in clinical practice, we suggest applying the strategy combination with the same protocol features (e.g., frequency, duration, homework, product orientation) as in this study, implementing Intervention Micro and Intervention Macro sequentially in either order. Background: Children with phonological impairment present with pattern‐based errors in their speech production. While some children have difficulties with speech perception and/or the establishment of robust underlying phonological representations, the nature of phonological impairment in children is still not well understood. Given that phonological and lexical development are closely linked, one way to better understand the nature of the problem in phonological impairment is to examine word learning abilities in children. Aims: To examine word learning and its relationship with speech perception, speech production and vocabulary knowledge in children aged 4–5 years. There were two variables of interest: speech production abilities ranging from phonological impairment to typical speech; and vocabulary abilities ranging from typical to above average ('lexically precocious'). Methods & Procedures: Participants were 49 Australian‐English‐speaking children aged 48–69 months. Children were each taught four novel non‐words (out of a selection of eight) through stories, and word learning was assessed at 1 week post‐initial exposure. Word learning was assessed using two measures: confrontation naming and story retell naming. Data were analysed by group using independent‐samples t‐tests and Mann–Whitney U‐tests, and continuously using multiple linear regression. Outcomes & Results: There was no significant difference in word learning ability of children with and without phonological impairment, but regardless of speech group, children with above average vocabulary had significantly better word learning abilities than children with average vocabulary. In multiple linear regression, vocabulary was the only significant predictor of variance in word learning ability. Conclusions & Implications: Children with phonological impairment can be lexically precocious and learn new words like their peers without phonological impairment. Contrary to expectations, vocabulary knowledge rather than expressive phonological ability explained variance in measures of word learning. These findings question an assumption that children with phonological impairment have underspecified phonological representations. They also highlight the heterogeneity among children with phonological impairment and the need to better understand the nature of their difficulty learning the phonological system of the ambient language. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: There is limited research examining the word learning abilities of children with phonological impairment. Most previous research focuses on word properties such as phonotactic probability and neighbourhood density. Within the existing literature there are different reports and conclusions regarding the word learning abilities of children with phonological impairment and whether their word learning differs from that of children with typically developing speech. What this study adds to existing knowledge: This study found that vocabulary was the strongest predictor of word learning across children with and without phonological impairment. There was no significant difference in word learning ability between children with and without phonological impairment. However, children with lexically precocious vocabulary abilities were significantly better at word learning than children with average vocabulary abilities. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: Findings from this study support the importance of assessing and considering measures of word learning—including vocabulary—when working with children with phonological impairment. This study indicates that it is possible to use stories coupled with measures of confrontation naming and story retell to gain deeper insight into children's word learning abilities. Several lines of research have shown that performing movements while learning new information aids later retention of that information, compared to learning by perception alone. For instance, articulated words are more accurately remembered than words that are silently read (the production effect). A candidate mechanism for this movement-enhanced encoding, sensorimotor prediction, assumes that acquired sensorimotor associations enable movements to prime associated percepts and hence improve encoding. Yet it is still unknown how the extent of prior sensorimotor experience influences the benefits of movement on encoding. The current study addressed this question by examining whether the production effect is modified by prior language experience. Does the production effect reduce or persist in a second language (L2) compared to a first language (L1)? Two groups of unbalanced bilinguals, German (L1) – English (L2) bilinguals (Experiment 1) and English (L1) – German (L2) bilinguals (Experiment 2), learned lists of German and English words by reading the words silently or reading the words aloud, and they subsequently performed recognition tests. Both groups showed a pronounced production effect (higher recognition accuracy for spoken compared to silently read words) in the first and second languages. Surprisingly, the production effect was greater in the second languages compared to the first languages, across both bilingual groups. We discuss interpretations based on increased phonological encoding, increased effort or attention, or both, when reading aloud in a second language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Speech recognition becomes increasingly important in the modern society, especially for human–machine interactions, but its deployment is still severely thwarted by the struggle of machines to recognize voiced commands in challenging real‐life settings: oftentimes, ambient noise drowns the acoustic sound signals, and walls, face masks or other obstacles hide the mouth motion from optical sensors. To address these formidable challenges, an experimental prototype of a microwave speech recognizer empowered by programmable metasurface is presented here that can remotely recognize human voice commands and speaker identities even in noisy environments and if the speaker's mouth is hidden behind a wall or face mask. The programmable metasurface is the pivotal hardware ingredient of the system because its large aperture and huge number of degrees of freedom allows the system to perform a complex sequence of sensing tasks, orchestrated by artificial‐intelligence tools. Relying solely on microwave data, the system avoids visual privacy infringements. The developed microwave speech recognizer can enable privacy‐respecting voice‐commanded human–machine interactions is experimentally demonstrated in many important but to‐date inaccessible application scenarios. The presented strategy will unlock new possibilities and have expectations for future smart homes, ambient‐assisted health monitoring, as well as intelligent surveillance and security. Although many social media users have reported encountering hate speech, differences in the perception between different users remain unclear. Using a qualitative multi-method approach, we investigated how personal characteristics, the presentation form, and content-related characteristics influence social media users' perceptions of hate speech, which we differentiated as first-level (i.e. recognizing hate speech) and second-level perceptions (i.e. attitude toward it). To that end, we first observed 23 German-speaking social media users as they scrolled through a fictitious social media feed featuring hate speech. Next, we conducted remote self-confrontation interviews to discuss the content and semi-structured interviews involving interactive tasks. Although it became apparent that perceptions are highly individual, some overarching tendencies emerged. The results suggest that the perception of and indignation toward hate speech decreases as social media use increases. Moreover, direct and prosecutable hate speech is perceived as being particularly negative, especially in visual presentation form. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore potential differences in suprathreshold auditory function among native and nonnative speakers of English as a function of age. Method: Retrospective analyses were performed on three large data sets containing suprathreshold auditory tests completed by 5,572 participants who were self-identified native and nonnative speakers of English between the ages of 18–65 years, including a binaural tone detection test, a digit identification test, and a sentence recognition test. Results: The analyses show a significant interaction between increasing age and participant group on tests involving speech-based stimuli (digit strings, sentences) but not on the binaural tone detection test. For both speech tests, differences in speech recognition emerged between groups during early adulthood, and increasing age had a more negative impact on word recognition for nonnative compared to native participants. Age-related declines in performance were 2.9 times faster for digit strings and 3.3 times faster for sentences for nonnative participants compared to native participants. Conclusions: This set of analyses extends the existing literature by examining interactions between aging and self-identified native English speaker status in several auditory domains in a cohort of adults spanning young adulthood through middle age. The finding that older nonnative English speakers in this age cohort may have greater-than-expected deficits on speech-in-noise perception may have clinical implications on how these individuals should be diagnosed and treated for hearing difficulties. Purpose: Postoperative rehabilitation programs for cochlear implant (CI) recipients primarily emphasize enhancing speech perception. However, effective communication in everyday social interactions necessitates consideration of diverse verbal social cues to facilitate language comprehension. Failure to discern emotional expressions may lead to maladjusted social behavior, underscoring the importance of integrating social cues perception into rehabilitation initiatives to enhance CI users’ well-being. After conventional rehabilitation, CI users demonstrate varying levels of emotion perception abilities. This disparity notably impacts young CI users, whose emotion perception deficit can extend to social functioning, encompassing coping strategies and social competence, even when relying on nonauditory cues such as facial expressions. Knowing that emotion perception abilities generally decrease with age, acknowledging emotion perception impairments in aging CI users is crucial, especially since a direct correlation between quality-of-life scores and vocal emotion recognition abilities has been observed in adult CI users. After briefly reviewing the scope of CI rehabilitation programs and summarizing the mounting evidence on CI users’ emotion perception deficits and their impact, we will present our recommendations for embedding emotional training as part of enriched and standardized evaluation/rehabilitation programs that can improve CI users’ social integration and quality of life. Conclusions: Evaluating all aspects, including emotion perception, in CI rehabilitation programs is crucial because it ensures a comprehensive approach that enhances speech comprehension and the emotional dimension of communication, potentially improving CI users’ social interaction and overall well-being. The development of emotion perception training holds promises for CI users and individuals grappling with various forms of hearing loss and sensory deficits. Ultimately, adopting such a comprehensive approach has the potential to significantly elevate the overall quality of life for a broad spectrum of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
