The present article examines journalism specialized in art and architecture in the print editions of the cultural supplements of three Spanish newspapers with the highest circulation in the country: Babelia (El País), ABC Cultural (ABC), and El Cultural (previously El Mundo, and currently, El Español) covering a twenty-five-year period. All three supplements consolidate visual arts and architecture into a unified section called Art. The main objective of this research is to analyze the Art sections, using the year 2018 as a case study and the twenty-five-year period (1993 to 2018) to investigate the evolution of cultural supplements. To undertake this study, I used the content analysis method. The results show a noticeable reduction in the length of the cultural supplements during the study period. This decline also entails a significant decrease in art content, with architecture severely affected. The conclusions of this study highlight the current precarious state of cultural supplements, the fundamental role of criticism, and the marginalization of architecture in these publications.

Periods of international crisis, such as the war in Ukraine that began in February 2022, are very symbolic times. Due to the remoteness of this type of conflicts, the media still play an important role in the shaping of news items that reach citizens. However, this field also suffers the deep transformations that digital platforms have brought for journalism. In this context, this study aims to explore the mechanisms that the press uses to generate international leaders on Twitter. Specifically, we analyze how the media contribute to creating figures of hero, anti-hero or villain with Zelensky and Putin, similar to ancient antagonistic struggles. To this purpose, a discursive content analysis is applied to a sample of all tweets (n=1244) posted by the five main Spanish newspapers (El País, El Mundo, ABC, El Confidencial, elDiario.es) that referenced these two leaders, during the weeks before and after the start of the war. As a result, there is a greater number of mentions of Putin, together with a negative approach. The building of a dichotomous relationship also occurs through a Zelensky who usually acts as the subject, but with less active verbs than Putin. Nevertheless, differences are detected depending on the ideology and the technological nature of the newspaper. These findings, added to the fact that the public prefer to interact with messages that allude to Zelensky or both leaders, foster a debate about the implications of this underlying intentionality of the media. Even though the relation between media and translation had not been widely studied (Valdeón, 2012; 852), during the last years several authors have dealt with this issue. Due to the importance of media translation, and the role played by media in disseminating ideologies, its study seems to be essential. This article sets to analyse how the information from a British headline on Spanish current affairs is translated and transmitted by six Spanish newspapers. For that purpose, the ideological square (discourse, society, cognition) of the TO and the TT will be studied. This article presents a case study that examines the translation of multimedia news stories, a journalistic narrative that presents news using two or more media formats, such as spoken and written word, moving and still images or graphics, including interactive and hypertextual elements. The research focuses on the news reports of the digital newspaper Theguardian.com which is translated by Eldiario.es, a digital Spanish newspaper. Drawing on a corpus of 30 pairs (of English and Spanish versions), I explore the strategies used by journalists in preparing the multimedia news story for its new audience. The methodology used combines comparative content analysis with a semi-standardised interview with the head of the International section of Eldiario.es. Translated news reports are respectful of the original written content from Theguardian.com but they replace multimedia content with other, different, content. The discursive effects of these substitutions are discussed and the reasons underlying these changes are analysed. The findings suggest that substitution of hypermedia content facilitates intercultural circulation of the multimedia journalistic narrative, but the modification of these contents on the part of the target medium produces its own range of effects. Through a comparative analysis of Spanish newspaper coverage of the 1918 flu and COVID-19 pandemics, this article explores the parallels between them, their roles in reflecting and facilitating public perceptions of infectious diseases, the national dialogues they incite, and the search for solutions in a global health crisis. I use qualitative analysis to interpret media themes of contagion as they shift from societal complacency to panic as disaster unfolds. In weaving together Philip Strong's model for epidemic psychology and Jim A. The article discusses the stereotyping and mythologization of the image of Russia, identified as a result of an analysis of the modern Spanish press. The empirical base of the study consists of articles of electronic versions of socio-political newspapers “ABC”, “El Pais”, “El Mundo” from 2014 to 2018. The considered time interval is associated with significant changes in international relations and the emergence of differences between the West and Russia on key issues of its foreign and domestic policy. Immediate response of the international community to the actions of Russia has contributed to fundamental changes in its perceptions about the global media space. An important component of the image of the world in the media sphere is the image of the state, which is created primarily through the media. It is formed on the basis of actual events of the surrounding reality, reflects their dynamics, expresses the public consciousness and influences it. Creating a media image of Russia, Spanish newspapers rely on stereotypical ideas and myths about it existing in the West, and also take part in the creation of new ones. Stereotyping and mythologization form a specific negative perception matrix, which negatively affects the image of Russia and demonizes it.

This article explores the use of photography and visual motifs as forms of political humour in contemporary media. By studying the representation of former Prime Minister of Spain Mariano Rajoy in the front pages of three Spanish newspapers (El Mundo, El País and La Vanguardia) between 2011 and 2017, the paper identifies and questions the liaisons between power and satire present in the so-called "serious" press, focusing on how different photographic traits concerning layout, composition and gestures reflect ideological choices. This photographic satire developed by printed media is then framed within a figurative tradition that goes back to Spanish royal portraiture, from Velázquez to Goya, which employs common strategies for the visual depiction of power, including satirical and humorous attributes to push specific political agendas. This examination, based on the quantified study and the visual analysis of more than 7,500 front pages, is part of the national research project Visual Motifs in the Public Sphere: Production and Circulation of Images of Power in Spain, 2011-2017. In order to determine a useful procedural approach to satirical expressions in photographs, defining which front pages invoke a remarkable satirical content, this article also presents a comparative study and a categorisation based on formal (im)balances related to the concepts of visual motif and humour. This article examines the phenomenon of migratory grief through an analysis of crónicas by Bolivian-born medical doctor Clara Espinosa, who migrated to Australia in 1988 and wrote under the pseudonym 'Woggy Girl'. Crónicas are newspaper columns that comment on aspects of daily life, social habits and the concerns of communities. They have appeared in Spanish-language newspapers in Australia since the late 1970s. A selection of Woggy Girl's crónicas are examined to determine what these narratives reveal about Espinosa's migratory journey and her process of adaptation to the host language and culture – which involved relinquishing her primary identity as a senior medical specialist. Espinosa identified this process as being one of grief, which she chronicled through the newspaper columns that are the focus of this study. Drawing on migratory grief theories from psychological and psychiatric disciplines, this article analyses Woggy Girl's crónicas to determine what they reveal about the author's self-diagnosed journey through migratory grief. I conclude that crónica writing provided Espinosa with a mechanism through which to process the myriad of emotions that accompanied her migratory grief journey, until such time as she was able to carve out a new identity, positioned closer to that of Australian mainstream society. The Spanish books and newspapers, which circulated in Buenos Aires at the beginning of the 19th century were used by the editors of the Buenos Aires press as inputs for content management. The texts published in Spain were read to be transcribed or rewritten, without mentioning the source of origin, in the Buenos Aires late-colonial press. The lack of author mention in the texts led to the ambiguity of believing that the authorship belonged to who was considered the editor of the newspaper. The comparative analysis, carried out thanks to the digitalization of Spanish printed sources by the Digital Newspaper Archive of the National Library of Spain, allowed us to find the correspondence between the sources published in Spain and the Buenos Aires newspaper Correo de Comercio (1810-1811). Texts were found in the newspaper, which for more than a hundred years were attributed to Manuel Belgrano, which had been translated in Spain by French authors such as Veron Duverger de Forbonnais. In the analysis of authorship in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in the Hispanic cultural field, it was possible to explain the appropriation of foreign texts, because they sought to favor the circulation of ideas for the promotion of the common good. The aim of this article is to analyze how the Spanish newspapers covered an international event such as the Egyptian spring from 2011 to 2013. From the perspective of the representation of Arab-Islamic issues, this study carries out a quantitative content analysis on the four reference newspapers in Spain (ABC, El Mundo, El País, and La Vanguardia) to find out whether there was an Islamophobic or Islamophilic treatment during the Egyptian revolution. The results of the 3,045 articles analyzed show that Spanish newspapers were remarkably interested in Egyptian events and that cultural discourses were not relevant in the coverage. The purpose of this paper was to assess the evolution of sports coverage regarding gender in online newspapers in two western societies Spain and the United States, in a period of ten years (2004 vs. 2014). A total of 2,951 articles with athletic content from the online newspapers usatoday.com and elmundo.es were analyzed. The variables registered were gender, placement in the newspaper, word count, inclusion of photographs, and the sports disciplines. The results show a significant reduction in sports articles in the two online newspapers for both genders. This reduction resulted in a decrease in the variability of sports articles. Further, there was a significant imbalance in sports news between the two genders. There was a significant reduction in the proportion of sports articles in both online newspapers for women, significantly reducing the accessibility of articles about women's sports. The gender imbalance was higher in the Spanish newspaper than in the U.S. newspaper. The gender imbalance was higher in the Spanish newspaper than in the U.S. newspaper. This paper investigates the way LGTBI+ people are represented by conservative and progressive Spanish newspapers. With this purpose in mind, a corpus has been compiled with news items published regarding the ratification of the legal nature of homosexual marriage in Spain on November 6, 2012. As a method, we have analyzed transitivity and the semantic roles of processes as an instrument of the Critical Discourse Analysis methodology. The main results reveal that there is a substantial difference between conservative and progressive newspapers: the prominence given by the conservative press to LGTBI+ people represents just one third of that displayed by the progressive press; the conservative press reduces the levels of consciousness, voice, cognition, desire, emotion and perception as compared to the progressive, which strengthens them. Finally, the conservative press uses negative processes as an LGTBI+ people's intrinsic feature; whilst the progressive uses them to reveal social injustice against them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to develop a pragmatic-discursive analysis of the metaphors deployed in the Spanish newspaper headlines about rare diseases. The corpus comprises the news published during two time periods: from July to September of 2014 (776 articles), and from January to May of 2015 (2,521 articles). The description of the semantics and pragmatics of the metaphors identified in the corpus was performed by combining the predictions from Relevance Theory and from Cognitive Metaphor Theory. A complementary discursive analysis in the framework of Critical Analysis of Metaphor was also conducted. The results showed that the conceptual and expressive content conveyed by two main conceptual metaphors -ILLNESS IS A CONTEST, and ILLNESS IS A JOURNEY- set a specific conceptual and ideological frame to make sense of these illnesses. When Selma Lagerlöf became a Nobel laureate in 1909, her works were translated into new languages and introduced to countries, including Spain, where she had previously been unknown. This article traces the image of Sweden and Scandinavia reflected in Selma Lagerlöf's reception in Spanish newspapers and periodicals around 1910. The idea of a distinctive Nordic or Scandinavian identity is discernible in the critics' characterizations of Lagerlöf's works; however, there is tension between their presentations of Lagerlöf as a representative of the region of Scandinavia or the North in general versus just one nation (Sweden) or province (Värmland). Building on research in imagology and literary transfer, this article investigates how and which regional, national, and provincial identities, geographies, and stereotypes of North and South were activated in support of a particular idea of the author. Legibility is a decisive factor to optimize the usability of digital newspapers. In order to achieve this goal and to improve the understanding of the message, it is essential to consider the typographic features of the news body text. Through a quantitative method, this study tries to analyze whether, as seen in print press, Spanish online journals show significant standards in the design of this element, both on desktop and smartphone. The investigation is completed with an analysis of the adaptive strategies of each publication by comparing the visual properties of the body text in these two devices. The research concludes that there is a subtle homogeneity in the typographic characteristics of the body text and important differences in the responsive methods of these publications. This study compiles and analyzes data on views of politicians and economists reported in news articles published in five Spanish dailies (the three leading national newspapers -El País, El Mundo and ABC-, and the two leading financial newspapers -Expansión and Cinco Días-). Quantitative content analysis will be used as the basic methodology for research. This content analysis will be focused on the coincidences and divergences between the nature, structure and frames of the opinions and comments on the bubble made by these policy makers and experts in two different periods, before and after the bubble burst. The general hypothesis of the research is that before the crisis -especially among politicians- there was not a real discussion on the threat of a housing bubble, its causes and probable consequences, but a quite orchestrated "negationist" consensus. Following the 2008 economic crisis, many Spaniards left their country in search of jobs and opportunities abroad. By 2014, of the more than two million Spaniards living abroad, the majority of those outside the European Union and the United States of America – 400,000 of them – were living in Argentina. By focusing on testimonies published in Argentine and Spanish newspapers and complementing them with an analysis of selected life histories, this article explores whether those migrating from Spain to Argentina were in search of a new home or, rather, of a temporary solution while 'weathering the storm'. The article argues that the answer is to be found beyond economic factors and shows how these migrants' decisions and experiences were also strongly shaped by non-economic factors, especially the social networks that had developed out of previous migration waves between Spain and Argentina. This essay proposes a re-examination of the ideological content in Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's journalistic production from 1894 to 1902. Centring on his republican paper El Pueblo (1894-1939), I argue that Hispanists have heretofore neglected the overtly political agenda of novels such as Arroz y tartana (1894), Flor de Mayo (1895), La barraca (1898), Entre naranjos (1900) and Cañas y barro (1902). Calling for a rereading of the Valencian cycle, I study the discursive tactics deployed by Blasco Ibáñez, in fiction and non-fiction form, as he unleashes a series of vitriolic attacks on a number of Restoration-era targets (turnismo, the Bourbon monarchy and the Catholic Church) while underscoring the exploitation of the proletariat. Drawing on literature related to convergence and conflict in diaspora, this manuscript describes how one long-standing, immigrant, regional Spanish-language newspaper in the United States responded to economic pressures by employing the highly contested topic of immigration to build a larger, more diasporic audience. A comparative analysis of two weeks' worth of print content and content published on its Facebook page, its primary digital platform, found a larger proportion of immigration stories online than in print. Furthermore, although immigration was the third most frequent subject of online news stories, behind crime and entertainment stories, immigration stories were the most popular stories as evidenced by audience 'likes' and 'shares'. These results lend support to the idea that so-called 'ethnic entrepreneurs' can refocus and redirect diasporic audiences around new conflicts in countries of residence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes and analyzes the image which the Spanish press disseminated of the 8,298 Spanish workers who participated in the building of the Panama Canal between 1906 and 1909. Our investigation is based on the hypothesis that the Spanish workers in Panama were the subject of a fiery controversy between the different political parties and journalistic enterprises in Spain in that period. In fact, the newspapers were a forum for important debates about the advantages and disadvantages of the recruitment of operatives, above all those from Galicia, to work in Panama under the orders of the United States government. While the conservative press wrote about the more technical aspects of the project, those which spoke for the left and workers' movements openly criticized the way that the U.S. government treated the Spanish workers. In general, the press had a very critical attitude towards the conditions they worked in at the Canal and the treatment of Spanish laborers, but it depended on the circumstances of Spanish politics and the pressures of the government of the United States. This study focuses on the semantic prosody (SP) of the word inmigración and its comparison in two Spanish newspapers which represent two different political ideologies. Our objective is to determine whether there exists a negative prosody of the item inmigración in the newspapers analyzed. We also intend to explore whether any significant differences can be elicited in how both newspapers portray the phenomenon of immigration. The analysis focuses on two corpora formed by more than 400 immigration news which were published between 2003 and 2013 and extracted from the digital library of El País (classified as centre-leftist) and El Mundo (with right-wing views). The results suggest that the word inmigración has a very similar negative prosody in both newspapers, regardless of their political ideology. Therefore, the portrayal of immigration seems to be rather a matter of social concern that goes beyond the political thought of conservatives and progressives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El Genio can be considered a pioneer magazine in the use of photography as an iconic element in the press. The Departmental Library of Burgos (Spain) retains a copy of the magazine El Genio, 1875, in which albumin photographs are inserted in specimens of typography by an ingenious system paste in blanks. There are precedents for inserting pages with photographic images in picture books, but for the first time, readers could watch real testimonies of the life of the Burgos city. Current research on public opinion shows a high level of discredit of trade unions in Spain. This article focuses on one of the expressions of this discredit: the discourse on trade unionism by mass media. To this purpose, the anti-union discourse by the conservative newspaper La Razón during the first semester of 2012 is analysed. Firstly, 868 headlines of news relating to trade unions in this newspaper are explored and classified into neutral, negative or positive content. Secondly, the structure and elements of the anti-union discourse in a selection of news reports is analysed. Mediated deliberation aims to investigate whether and to what extent media may contribute to the public debate by offering deliberative elements. This article investigates press mediated deliberation by presenting the results of a comparative research on Italy, France and Spain. The corpus of the analysed articles amounts to 2074 units from 15 widely circulated newspapers. Collective memory and identity so often go hand in hand with conflicts. Alongside the use of violence, conflicts unfold against the backdrop of different narratives about the past through which groups constantly remind themselves of the supposed origin of the conflict, and consequently, what position individuals are expected to take as members of the group. Narratives - as symbolic tools for interpreting the past and the present, as well as happenings that have yet to occur - simultaneously underpin, and are underpinned by, the position held by each warring faction. Drawing on previous works, this paper compares different versions of the 2016 truce period in the Basque Country stemming from three subjects identified, to varying degrees, with the main political actors involved in that conflict. These three cases have been selected from a total of 16 participants who were asked to define the Basque conflict and to provide an account of the 2006 truce period by using 23 documents taken from different Spanish newspapers. On the one hand, the results show two narratives reproducing the versions of two of the main political actors involved in the conflict, and on the other hand, a narrative characterized by a more personal and ironic appropriation of those versions. Women are still less present in scientific areas than men. This study analyzes the visual representation of women scientists in Spanish press and concludes that they are also underrepresented in newspapers. We analyze 1,134 photographs published in 2014 and 2015 in the science news sections of the four largest distribution Spanish newspapers. A tendency to present men more often as the protagonists of the information and women as a visual resource is also observed. This paper is a multimodal critical discourse study of the representation of Sub-Saharan immigrants who arrive on the Spanish coasts in small boats. The main objective of this research is to analyse the visual portrayal of the way the Spanish press transmits news items dealing with the arrival of the above mentioned immigrants. The data of this article consists of all the news items published upon arrival of these immigrants in the digital edition of the two most popular Spanish newspapers, i.e., El País and ABC, from 1 June 2011 to 1 January 2015. For its framework of analysis, the study draws on the principles of critical discourse analysis and visual grammar in order to observe the main visual strategies used by the press to portray the immigrants under analysis. The analysis of the corpus of examples is intended to assist in the creation of a typology of the main ways in which immigrants are represented visually. The study reveals that immigrants are represented dysphemistically, i.e., negative aspects of them and of their arrival are highlighted. The results show that the general tendency is to represent Sub-Saharan immigrants as victims, distanced from the readers and as strangers and different from the majority group. In the process of infant feeding throughout history, one of the options has been the support by wet nurses, in both household and institutional level. This social figure has been reflected in press and can be studied in terms of its representation. We set as our goal to acquire a social vision through the analysis of a corpus of documents from the newspaper ABC of Madrid between 1903 and 1920. The method used has been the search of the term wet nurse through the review and content analysis of the ABC, in news, advertisements and other references in the period indicated. 999 documents have been recovered and analyzed, 41% corresponding to wet nurses offers and demands, 24% to advertisements and products related to food and/or food supplements. The remaining records correspond to economic measures, legislative rules, references to wet nurses of royalty or social references. Qualitative content analysis clarifies the social vision of wet nurses in society at that time. The study concludes that wet nurses are presented as a normalized social figure and as such is reflected in the press, which will also reflect the negative view of these women influenced by the hygienist current. This paper analyzes 621 videos published during two weeks on the front pages or covers of five Spanish digital newspapers (abc.es, elconfidencial.com, elmundo.es, elpais.com and lavanguardia.com). The contents, genres, formats and structures of these videos have important singularities -both own and external production- in regard to the typical audiovisual production of television news. The artistic dimension of the architect from Zaragoza, Jose Borobio Ojeda (1907-1984), was an essential part of his life that guided his personal and professional career. The portfolio of his graphic work has been analyzed and disseminated in different exhibitions and publications. In this article, we centre on the study of architectural sketches taken during a study trip to Albarracin, organized by Teodoro de Anasagasti in 1930. Two years later, Anasagasti would choose those drawings to illustrate Anta, the architectural journal that he edited and published every ten days. The expressiveness of the linear outlines characteristic of his sketches made him a leading figure of the graphic discourse in the newsletter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The media are important actors in humanitarian crisis management and resolution, both in the countries facing the crises and in the rest of the world. Based on an inductive approach to a news sample from four Spanish newspapers, this study analyses the news frames used in the coverage of countries facing humanitarian crises. Results show that, with certain differences between countries, the Spanish press frames these countries as being theatres of war and violence, Islamic terrorism, and crime. From a theoretical perspective, results also suggest that news frames should not be classified either as "generic" or "specific," but that they should instead be placed on a continuous scale ranging from "generic" through to "specific".
