For a variety of reasons, many Spaniards emigrated to Latin America in the twentieth century. In cultural terms, this transatlantic movement of people implied the creation of important literary dialogues and productions that enriched both shores. In this context, we offer a reflection on the work of the Canarian author, Mercedes Pinto (1883-1976), following her exile in Uruguay during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera. We will analyze the impact his exile exercised on her literary production following Gaos's concept of "trasterramiento. "Further, taking Gonzalez Diaz's concept of the Canary Islander's "migraciones golondrinas" as a point of departure, we map out a reading of Pinto's work focusing on three key moments of her transatlantic crossing: the departure (expectations, perspectives, possibilities); the voyage itself and her subsequent wanderings and the experience of exile (how life becomes literature). Her years of exile in several Latin American countries constituted a long and dynamic journey that proved fruitful for her writing. This work analyzes Max Aub's interpretations of the Mexican revolutionary phenomenon. In these interpretations it is possible to see how Max Aub, a Spanish Republican exile in Mexico, brought a number of different textual and literary traditions to bear on his understanding of the Mexican political process. The study focuses on writings that Max Aub published on subjects related to the Revolution that began in 1910 (in particular, the "narrative of the revolution"), as well as the author's notes in his private Diarios [Diaries], which were edited posthumously but whose publication Max Aub had largely foreseen. This article discusses the involvement of Spanish exiles living in Mexico in the country's literary production in the mid-20th century. The author comments on the role of the journal "Revista Mexicana de Cultura" in offering a space for these exiles and their writings. She also considers the relationship between the Mexicans and the Spanish exiles, including its influence on Mexican literature.

This article offers an approximation to the complex phenomenon of exile provoked by the Spanish Civil War from a perspective that up now has been under-analysed: the study of the surviving letters revealing the personal feelings that the forced departure from the country provoked (fears, desires, hopes, uncertainties, anxieties, worries, states of mind, and so on). In order to realize this personal vision we have based our research on sources which until now have been insufficiently examined—namely, epistolaries. The study of these, whether as primary sources found in various archives in Catalonia or as edited collections, has allowed us to access personal and first-hand testimonies of the phenomenon of exile, which up to now has principally been treated from a collective perspective. The present analysis, focussing primarily on Catalans in the period between 1939 and 1946 (when hopes completely faded that the Allied victory would prompt an end to the Franco regime) reveals a common will: a yearning to return. This article discusses three Spanish Republican exiles, Constancia de la Mora, Silvia Mistral, and Dolores Martí, with a particular focus on their lives after the Spanish Civil War from 1939 to 1940. The author examines the social and political environment from which they came and to which they emigrated. She also comments on their extreme political beliefs, including anarchism and Communism, which resulted in their exile from Spain. The individual and collective memories involved in their life stories are also considered.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship between the Spanish poet Jorge Guillén and the English Hispanist John Brande Trend through the correspondence they exchanged in the time period between the 1930s and the 1950s. It is not a full catalogue and comprises only sixteen letters. The exile is a topic that comes up frequently in them, one of the main reasons that triggered this correspondence, and is present in many of the letters: first during the war when Guillén asked Trend, then a university Professor of Spanish in Cambridge, for his support to be appointed reader in Cambridge, which would allow him to leave Spain; and in the following decades, when nostalgic memories of the Spain of the Twenties surface in their words. Cuando en 1934, en la primera edición en libro de Luis Álvarez Petreña, Max Aub se pregunta si la novela supuestamente escrita por Petreña, que él edita, es un libro romántico, abre una discusión consigo mismo sobre la condición romántica y sobre su relación con las vanguardias que sólo se cerrará con la última versión de la novela, Vida y obra deLuis Álvarez Petreña, publicada en 1970 y 1971. Este artículo se esfuerza en comprender los términos de esta discusión, situándola en el marco de la crítica literaria y de la estética contemporáneas, y contrastándola con ese ajuste de cuentas con la literatura moderna y contemporánea que da sentido a bastantes de las obras del Max Aub en el exilio. When in 1934, in the first edition, as a book, of Luis Álvarez Petreña,Max Aub wonders if the novel supposedly written by Petreña, that he is editing, is a romantic book, he begins a debate with himself concerning the romantic condition and its relationship with avant-gardemovements, which will not finish until the final versión of the novel, Vida y obra deLuis Álvarez Petreña, published in 1970 and 1971. Our article attempts to understand the terms of this discussion, placing it within the framework of contemporary literature and aesthetics, and contrasting it with the settling of scores with contemporary literatura that explains much of Max Aub's works written in exile. La edición y la difusión de la dilatada y heterogénea obra de Ramón Gómez de la Serna ha sufrido, a lo largo de la vida del autor, una azarosa andadura, siempre a la busca de un editor, de un público y de un reporte económico que permitiera la profesionalización de su trabajo creativo. Ramón transfería al soporte de sus textos una gran capacidad expresiva y una innegable dimensión plástica, como formalización de su proyecto de libro de autor, libro creador y libro museo. Joan Merli, editor exiliado en Buenos Aires, logró dar continuidad a la obra de Ramón en Argentina, actualizar su producción anterior a la Guerra Civil y recuperar su presencia pública en su país de origen. Merli revitaliza un corpus diseminado y poco difundido en España y en Hispanoamérica y refuerza el proyecto de renovación novelística retomado por Ramón con la inclasificable El hombre perdido (1947). El epistolario a Joan Merli (1942–1950) registra la relación entre Gómez de la Serna y su editor como la vía que favoreció la inserción ramoniana en el campo cultural argentino: una vía de normalización cultural para uno de los más destacados representantes de las anomalías literarias contemporáneas. He constantly sought a publisher, a readership and an economic impact that would allow him to undertake his creative writing on a professional basis. Ramón invested the medium of his texts with great expressiveness and a manifestly plastic dimension: this gave formal representation to his libro de autor ('author book') libro creador ('creative book') and libro museo ('museum book') projects. The publisher Joan Merli, exiled in Buenos Aires, succeeded in giving continuity to Ramón's work in Argentina, bringing his pre-Civil War output up to date there, reviving his public visibility in Ramón's native country and so revitalising a scattered and hitherto narrowly-distributed corpus of work in Spain and Hispano-America. He also supported Ramón's attempts to renew the novel, a project that Ramón took up again in 1947 with the unclassifiable text El hombre perdido (The Lost Man). The correspondence with Joan Merli (1942–1950) marks out the relationship between Gómez de la Serna and his publisher as key to the introduction and establishment of the work of one of the most outstandingly singular contemporary literary figures within the Argentine cultural scene. This article discusses political exiles from Spain under the government of Francisco Franco after the Spanish Civil War in 1939. The writings of these exiles, citing similar experiences shared by the groups, many of whom settled in France or Mexico, are examined. Their societal roles post-exile are detailed, including involvement in anti-Franco propaganda. An analysis of exiled Spanish women is provided, which emphasizes their diversity in social class, political participation, and occupation.

The article discusses political reforms in Spain during the 1930s, particularly the spread of communism and the eruption of the Spanish Civil War and the resulting exodus of Spanish pro-republican people to Mexico. This essay explores the established relationship between exiled Spanish poet Pedro Salinas and the island of Puerto Rico, where he lived from 1943-1946, beginning with the diverse texts he wrote during these years. Salinas' literary production during this period shows a series of questions that make it difficult to think of his relationship with the Caribbean. Nonetheless, a careful reading of the same reveals their hesitations and tensions in certain coherence. Although the twists that his work takes during this period (the return to the traditional poetry as well as writing speeches defending certain areas of culture) can be read as an insistence on maintaining a Western legacy, such a gesture should be explored in the context of its creation: World War II, exile, and developmental Puerto Rico of the 1940s. The relationship between these texts and the tensions that are generated can be read from the reflection the poem "El contemplado" imposes. Through a close reading of the poem, this essay proposes that in these critical years, Pedro Salinas articulated, from poetry, a distinct and urgent way of literary, poetic, and, above all, political thinking. This article discusses the patterns of emigration and immigration between Spain and Argentina during the 20th century. It examines several cases of mass migrations, including the Argentine exile during the military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s, the exile of republicans from Spain during and after the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s, and migrations caused by the economic crisis in Argentina from 1999-2002. The author comments on the formation of transnational social spaces by Spanish and Argentine exiles, while referencing their writings that relate to the historical and social perspectives of these migrations.

A hemerographic review of the contribution of the Spanish exile in Mexico is done by analyzing the magazine "Ciencia. Revista Hispanoamericana de ciencias puras y aplicadas" (1940-1975), a publication founded by exiled Spanish scientists and published in Mexico. This magazine had the support of the government of Lázaro Cardenas, and was considered an indispensable scientific channel among the exiled scientists and researchers in all Hispano-America. The present work is a contribution to exile studies through two protagonists of this experience: José Gaos, Spanish philosopher who had to move to Mexico in 1938; and José Donoso, Chilean writer who went into exile to Spain. On the one hand, the term transterrado, (transplanted) is pointed out, concept defined and developed by José Gaos in his work. On the other hand, the symbol of the garden is studied in the novel El jardín de al lado by José Donoso. Both discourses, philosophic and literary, allow to establish an exchange in order to permit the reflection upon the unavoidable necessity of the human being of giving meaning to his life events so as to understand them and comprehend himself. The Spanish intellectuals who settled in Mexico after the Spanish Civil War faced a daunting task: how to recover and piece together again the signs of a political and cultural identity in exile, in order to establish new symbolic ground capable of nurturing and sustaining the expression of a collective national consciousness and history outside of Spain. I argue that this project of cultural reconstruction in Mexico, self-consciously inscribed within the master tropes of conquest, reconquest, empire, and anti-imperialism, was predicated on an alternative 'chronicle' of sixteenth-century Spain: the tradition of humanism. In this essay, I first locate the exiles' impassioned discussions about Spanish history, hispanism, and the traces of empire, within the context of ideological culture wars between the two Spains, Franco's at home and the Republican intellectuals' abroad. Secondly, I examine the émigrés' collective commemoration of two key cultural events of 1940 — the fourth centenary of the death of Juan Luis Vives, and the 400th anniversary of the founding of Vasco de Quiroga's famed Colegio de San Nicolás Obispo in Mexico — as a discursive vehicle capable of replacing the Conquerors' tale with a more satisfying story of the historical legacy of Spanish empire in Latin America.
