In this paper, my objective is to delve into the history of women accused of practicing witchcraft in Sicily during the early modern period. This investigation draws upon documented evidence from the Spanish Inquisition spanning from 1516 to 1782, along with archival records and the ethnographic works of nineteenth-century scholars. The focal point of my research is the enigmatic figure known as donna de fora (the ladies from outside) in the Italian context. To illuminate this subject, I employ an analysis of seventeenth-century Inquisition trial records and oral traditions documented by anthropologist Giuseppe Pitrè in the late nineteenth century. The donne de fora represent a distinctive and intriguing group as this term appears exclusively within the Inquisitorial records of Sicily. They were perceived as supernatural entities, characterized as "part witches, part fairies". According to beliefs of the time, these women's spirits would depart from their bodies during sleep to convene with higher-ranking fairies. Notably, the trials and the Edict of the Diocese of Girgenti (Agrigento) in 1656 document that the most significant gatherings of these figures occurred during the night of Saint John, between the 23rd and 24th of June. Through an examination of trial records, we gain insights into how these women were perceived by their contemporaries, as well as an understanding of their societal roles and the ritual practices they engaged in. Moving forward to the late nineteenth century, ethnologist Giuseppe Pitrè conducted a comprehensive study of local rituals and popular folklore, and he collected various objects and documents related to supernatural beliefs, including those associated with the donne de fora in the regions around Palermo. My research is centered on archival records containing Pitrè's notes, unpublished drafts, and correspondence with scholars in Italy and Europe discussing this phenomenon. The present study aims to identify the specifics of the Jewish text in Howard Fast's iconic novel Torquemada. The study is based on the semiotic definition of the text. The Jewish theme in the oeuvre of Fast, a writer of Jewish origin, occupies a significant place. The specific construction of the Jewish theme allows one to highlight the boundaries of a certain Jewish text in the author's work, which was clearly formed during the period of ideological and national quest. The novel Torquemada occupies a special place in the Jewish text of Fast. The Jewish text of the novel Torquemada is represented by a multi-level model. At the anthological level, the Jewish text of the novel can be correlated with the ideological quests of the author, Howard Fast. However, at the same time, it is an allegoric narrative about the fate of the Jews of the 20th century and the tragedy of the Holocaust. The events of the 15th century are the allegory of the events of the 20th century, and the times of the Spanish Inquisition are associated with the tragedy of the Jews of Europe. This essay suggests that reading Spanish Inquisition records against the grain allows us to write a cultural and social history of New Christians not solely from the lens of heresy and "judaizing", but from a lens that reconstructs their amical and spatial experiences. In particular, it examines the social relationships between New Christians as they took shape in various public spaces in Madrid as well as in other Spanish cities during the seventeenth century. During this period, the Inquisition focused mostly on New Christians of Portuguese origin, who as immigrants often sought after friendship. This study makes the argument that the historiographical tendency to consider New Christians primarily as "crypto-Jews" overshadows the various ways in which this group used public urban space for social interactions similarly to Old Christians, as well as for exchanging essential information about the Jewish faith and its commandments. Additionally, this study suggests that we should avoid the binary division of space as either public or private, since public spaces were also used for clandestine activities, and since the New Christian household was often a far more dangerous place to practice the Jewish tradition, due to the ongoing presence of servants, family members and friends. The impacts of the Spanish Inquisition in Sicily were manifold, affecting politics, business, and society. Those closely associated with the Inquisition could exercise the privilegium fori by having legal issues settled in the tribunal's court by inquisitorial judges. Waiving this privilege could guarantee to other parties to a contract that their agreement could not be overruled by the tribunal. Waiving the right to the privilegium fori was institutionalized as such a guarantee to individuals contracting business in a society disciplined by different types of justice based on multiple legal systems. The History of Emotions has been establishing itself as a field of historical research since the 1980s, but, to date, almost no attempt has been made to approach the study of the Spanish and Portuguese inquisitions through the history of emotions. Focusing on the period 1560–1610, which followed the conclusion of the Council of Trent, this essay endeavours to offer a preliminary analysis of Iberian inquisitorial trials for the history of emotions. The first section examines the case study offered by the trial of the Spanish soldier Bartolomé Domínguez, who was prosecuted in Portugal for committing sacrilege in 1589. Having lost all his money gambling, Bartolomé drew his sword and slashed at a wayside cross. This public act of sacrilege led to Bartolomé's arrest and an investigation by the Inquisition. The surviving inquisitorial trial dossier provides an interesting insight into the role played by emotions in inquisitorial justice and social disciplining in the early modern Iberian Peninsula. The second section examines a limited sample of trials that have been edited and seeks to find references to tears and weeping in such sources. It discusses what such references reveal about the attitudes of inquisitors towards tears within the legal context of inquisitorial trials, and whether tears were always seen as evidence of genuine contrition. The third and final section focuses on investigating how the context of post-Tridentine spirituality might have played a role in the increased attention that the inquisitors paid to other physical signs of contrition beyond tears. The article analyzes the relationship between obscenity and censorship in Spanish and Novohispanic poetry of the 18th century. It highlights the relationship between society and stray dogs in Mexico City, as well as indigenous practices in Peru. The present study explores depictions of converso spirituality in two polemical works written around 1650 by Saul Levi Mortera. As the chief rabbi of Amsterdam, Mortera oversaw the rejudaization of conversos who fled to the city from the Portuguese and Spanish Inquisitions. In order to persuade conversos to abandon crypto-Judaism, Mortera wrote polemical works in which he asserted the superiority of rabbinic Judaism. Noel D. Johnson and Mark Koyama's book, Persecution and Toleration: The Long Road to Religious Freedom, examines the links between religion, state action, and the development of liberalism in medieval Europe. It discusses a model of "conditional toleration"; how the interaction between religion and state influences persecution and discrimination against minorities; and how religious freedom eventually paved the way for scientific advances, liberalism, and economic growth. It tackles issues such as fiscal capacity, anti-Semitism in Europe, plagues including the Black Death, heresy in the Spanish Inquisition, witchcraft trials, the Holocaust, climate shocks, and the growth of cities with emergent religious minorities. This article is an obituary for John A. Tedeschi, an American scholar who conducted extensive research on the Roman Inquisition. Tedeschi's work focused on the challenges of writing a conventional history of the Inquisition due to the loss of its central archive during Napoleon's reign. He argued that while moral justice was impossible in a context where the Catholic Church felt the right to persecute those with different religious beliefs, legal justice was dispensed by the Roman Inquisition. Tedeschi's research also explored the treatment of maleficent witchcraft by post-Tridentine inquisitions compared to secular courts in Latin Europe. He spent much of his career at the Newberry Library and the University of Wisconsin, and he and his wife Anne translated Italian scholarship on the Inquisition into English. Religious persecution is common in many countries around the globe. There is little evidence on its long-term effects. We collect data from all across Spain, using information from more than 67,000 trials held by the Spanish Inquisition between 1480 and 1820. This comprehensive database allows us to demonstrate that municipalities of Spain with a history of a stronger inquisitorial presence show lower economic performance, educational attainment, and trust today.
