Abstract

The article presents information about the book "Southern Paternalism and the American Welfare State: Economics, Politics and Institutions in the South, 1865-1965," by Lee J. Alston and Joseph P. Ferrie. Explains the emergence, and ultimate decline, of paternalism as part of the implicit labor contract in Southern agriculture and how Southerners' efforts to maintain the system of paternalism influenced federal social welfare policy. Discusses the emergence of paternalism in the South as a means of reducing the costs of obtaining, motivating, and retaining labor in cotton production following the abolition of slavery.
