Sorghum bicolor is among the most important cereals globally and a staple crop for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Approximately 20% of sorghum yield is lost annually in Africa due to infestation with the root parasitic weed Striga hermonthica. Existing Striga management strategies are not singularly effective and integrated approaches are needed. Here, we demonstrate the functional potential of the soil microbiome to suppress Striga infection in sorghum. We associate this suppression with microbiome-mediated induction of root endodermal suberization and aerenchyma formation and with depletion of haustorium-inducing factors, compounds required for the initial stages of Striga infection. We further identify specific bacterial taxa that trigger the observed Striga-suppressive traits. Collectively, our study describes the importance of the soil microbiome in the early stages of root infection by Striga and pinpoints mechanisms of Striga suppression. These findings open avenues to broaden the effectiveness of integrated Striga management practices.

Mutant populations are crucial for functional genomics and discovering novel traits for crop breeding. Sorghum, a drought and heat-tolerant C4 species, requires a vast, large-scale, annotated, and sequenced mutant resource to enhance crop improvement through functional genomics research. Here, we report a sorghum large-scale sequenced mutant population with 9.5 million ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS)-induced mutations that covered 98% of sorghum's annotated genes using inbred line BTx623. Remarkably, a total of 610 320 mutations within the promoter and enhancer regions of 18 000 and 11 790 genes, respectively, can be leveraged for novel research of cis-regulatory elements. A comparison of the distribution of mutations in the large-scale mutant library and sorghum association panel (SAP) provides insights into the influence of selection. EMS-induced mutations appeared to be random across different regions of the genome without significant enrichment in different sections of a gene, including the 5' UTR, gene body, and 3'-UTR. In contrast, there were low variation density in the coding and UTR regions in the SAP. Based on the Ka /Ks value, the mutant library (~1) experienced little selection, unlike the SAP (0.40), which has been strongly selected through breeding. All mutation data are publicly searchable through SorbMutDB (https://www.depts.ttu.edu/igcast/sorbmutdb.php) and SorghumBase (https://sorghumbase.org/). This current large-scale sequence-indexed sorghum mutant population is a crucial resource that enriched the sorghum gene pool with novel diversity and a highly valuable tool for the Poaceae family, that will advance plant biology research and crop breeding.

The development of cereal crops with high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is a priority for worldwide agriculture. In addition to conventional plant breeding and genetic engineering, the use of the plant microbiome offers another approach to improving crop NUE. To gain insight into the bacterial communities associated with sorghum lines that differ in NUE, a field experiment was designed comparing 24 diverse Sorghum bicolor lines under sufficient and deficient nitrogen (N). Amplicon sequencing and untargeted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were used to characterize the bacterial communities and the root metabolome associated with sorghum genotypes varying in sensitivity to low N. We demonstrated that N stress and sorghum type (energy, sweet, and grain sorghum) significantly impacted the root-associated bacterial communities and root metabolite composition of sorghum. We found a positive correlation between sorghum NUE and bacterial richness and diversity in the rhizosphere. The greater alpha diversity in high NUE lines was associated with the decreased abundance of a dominant bacterial taxon, Pseudomonas. Multiple strong correlations were detected between root metabolites and rhizosphere bacterial communities in response to low N stress. This indicates that the shift in the sorghum microbiome due to low N is associated with the root metabolites of the host plant. Taken together, our findings suggest that host genetic regulation of root metabolites plays a role in defining the root-associated microbiome of sorghum genotypes differing in NUE and tolerance to low N stress.IMPORTANCEThe development of crops that are more nitrogen use-efficient (NUE) is critical for the future of the enhanced sustainability of agriculture worldwide. This objective has been pursued mainly through plant breeding and plant molecular engineering, but these approaches have had only limited success. Therefore, a different strategy that leverages soil microbes needs to be fully explored because it is known that soil microbes improve plant growth through multiple mechanisms. To design approaches that use the soil microbiome to increase NUE, it will first be essential to understand the relationship among soil microbes, root metabolites, and crop productivity. Using this approach, we demonstrated that certain key metabolites and specific microbes are associated with high and low sorghum NUE in a field study. This important information provides a new path forward for developing crop genotypes that have increased NUE through the positive contribution of soil microbes.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is characterized by chronic low ruminal pH, and occurs for feedlot cattle fed high-concentrate diets. Forages slow digestion and reduce acid production. We aimed to assess how motivated finishing cattle are to access forage (Sudan grass hay, SG) via their willingness to interact with an electrified barrier. Reticulorumen pH was measured to relate the results to digestive health. Twenty-eight animals fed a high-concentrate ration ad libitum had access to 4 L of one of two treatments (n = 14/treatment) fed 1×/d behind a barrier: 1) SG or 2) an additional offering of the normal ration (total mixed ration [TMR]). To access their treatment, the steer voluntarily pushed his muzzle against an electrified barrier. The electrical current was increased exponentially every 24 h (0, 156, 312, 625, 1,250, 2,500, 5,000 µA) until the animal ceased accessing it. Visits to the treatment were recorded continuously 24 h/d and reticulorumen pH was measured every 10 min. Time with a reticulorumen pH below 5.8 was 348 ± 101 and 280 ± 76 min/24 h for SG and TMR animals, respectively; these durations meet the criterion for SARA. This study aims to develop an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling to be trained to forecast the effects of different irrigation water levels and fertilizer doses on the hay yield and some quality traits of herbal parts of Sorghum × Sudan grass hybrid (Sorghum sudanense vs. Sorghum bicolor). The ANN model was developed on the limited field experiments implemented in Bilecik, Turkey, for 2 years in 2021 and 2022. Experiments were conducted in split-plot design with three replications. In the study, three irrigation levels (I100, I60, and I30) were placed in the main parcels, and four fertilizer levels (N0, N50, N100 and N150 kg ha−1) were placed in the sub-parcels. Irrigations were made in three critical periods according to the amount of cumulative evaporation occurring in the Class A Pan. The results showed that irrigation and fertilization are important in terms of yield and quality characteristics. The yield increased depending on the irrigation and fertilization dose, and the highest value was obtained from the I100 × N150 interaction (28.10 t ha−1). The highest protein yield was determined from the I60 × N150 (2.37 t ha−1) interaction, and the Relative Feed Value (RFV) value was determined from the I30 × N150 (92.17) interaction. Irrigation Water Use Efficiency (IWUE) and Water Use Efficiency (WUE) values increased with decreasing irrigation amount, and the highest IWUE was determined from I30 and the highest WUE was determined from I60 irrigation subjects. Water scarcity, combined with low soil fertility, constitutes one of the main limiting factors in crop productivity in semi-arid regions. However, nutritional supplementation techniques with nitrogen (N) and molybdenum (Mo) can lead to positive enhancements in the production of these crops. The objective was to evaluate the effect of increasing doses of N in the presence and/or absence of Mo on the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the productive increase of forage sorghum subjected to water deficit in the semi-arid region. The experiment was conducted in the field using a randomized block design, with four replications, in a 5 × 2 × 3 factorial scheme, comprising five doses of N (urea): 0, 50, 100, 150, and 300 kg ha−1, two doses of Mo (sodium molybdate): 0 and 160 g ha−1, and three production cycles. The highest yields of green mass (GM) (47.98 Mg ha−1), dry mass (DM) (19.66 Mg ha−1), water use efficiency (WUE) (5.57 kg/m³), and N use efficiency (NUE) (0.26 kg2/g) occurred at the highest N dosage (300 kg ha−1 N). The highest contents and extraction of total N, Mo, chloride (Cl), and potassium (K) were found in regrowth 2 and at the highest N dose (300 kg ha−1). The interaction of N and Mo resulted in higher catalase (CAT) enzyme activity. The meteorological conditions during the cycles strongly influenced the nutrient contents and extraction. Magwinya, a deep‐fried cereal dough, is usually produced using cake or bread wheat flour due to the naturally beneficial proteins found in wheat. In this study, sorghum flour, a gluten‐free cereal grain, was used to produce magwinya. The aim was to develop and characterize gluten‐free fried dough using sorghum flour. Xanthan and guar gum hydrocolloids were added to the sorghum flour in ratios of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% and 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5%, respectively, for magwinya production. The physicochemical characteristics of the magwinya were compared. The hardness of magwinya was significantly lower in sorghum: guar gum (SGG) samples due to their high moisture content. Ash and fiber content were also significantly higher in SGG samples. Increasing the level of SGG increased the volume (63.33–66.67 cm3). There was no significant difference in the weight of the samples. An increase in diameter (50.33–52.17 mm) was observed in SGG samples. Color analysis showed a significant increase in the L* (Lightness) of the crumb (46.28–49.12) compared to the crust (26.96–30.11) in the SX (sorghum: xanthan gum) and SGG samples. Redness (12.28–13.77) increased with levels, while yellowness (11.86–14.02) decreased with levels in SX and SGG crust. This study's findings are significant as they indicate that guar gum was the better binder for developing cereal fried dough (magwinya) from sorghum. These findings could have practical applications in the food industry, particularly in the development of gluten‐free products and in the use of alternative grains like sorghum. This research seeks to comprehensively assess the water footprint and environmental sustainability of millet-based ethanol production in India, responding to the growing interest in resilient and nutritious alternatives. Utilizing a life cycle assessment approach, the study will scrutinize water usage across the entire production process, from millet cultivation to ethanol extraction. The primary aim is to gain an in-depth understanding of water consumption at each stage, pinpointing areas for enhancement and efficiency. Rajasthan exhibited the highest total water footprint at 6596 m3/ton, primarily due to its substantial ETc value, while Andhra Pradesh showcased the lowest at 1906 m3/ton, owing to its high average yield. Haryana displayed significant water usage during crop production, with a water footprint of 5870 m3/ton, where WFgreen, WFblue, and WFgrey contributed 3730 m3/ton, 2010 m3/ton and 130 m3/ton respectively. Uttar Pradesh demonstrated a comparatively lower total water footprint of 2564 m3/ton. These findings are anticipated to offer valuable insights into the viability and sustainability of millet-derived ethanol as an eco-friendly biofuel option in India, guiding policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders in promoting its adoption and addressing environmental challenges linked with conventional fuel sources. Summary Lignin, a complex heterogenous polymer present in virtually all plant cell walls, plays a critical role in protecting plants from various stresses. However, little is known about how lignin modifications in sorghum will impact plant defense against sugarcane aphids (SCA), a key pest of sorghum. We utilized the sorghum brown midrib (bmr) mutants, which are impaired in monolignol synthesis, to understand sorghum defense mechanisms against SCA. We found that loss of Bmr12 function and overexpression (OE) of Bmr12 provided enhanced resistance and susceptibility to SCA, respectively, as compared with wild‐type (WT; RTx430) plants. Monitoring of the aphid feeding behavior indicated that SCA spent more time in reaching the first sieve element phase on bmr12 plants compared with RTx430 and Bmr12‐OE plants. A combination of transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that bmr12 plants displayed altered auxin metabolism upon SCA infestation and specifically, elevated levels of auxin conjugate indole‐3‐acetic acid–aspartic acid (IAA–Asp) were observed in bmr12 plants compared with RTx430 and Bmr12‐OE plants. Furthermore, exogenous application of IAA–Asp restored resistance in Bmr12‐OE plants, and artificial diet aphid feeding trial bioassays revealed that IAA–Asp is associated with enhanced resistance to SCA. • Morpho- physiological effects of combined heat and drought stress at pre-anthesis. • Panicle length and leaf water content directly affects sorghum grain weight. • Genotypes NPGRC3102, IS30015 and IS3574 resisted combined drought and heat stress. • Multi-environment trials recommended prior to deployment of identified genotypes. Combinatory stress of soil water deficit and extreme temperatures has become a major limiting abiotic factor in rain-fed areas of semi-arid tropics. Vast genetic resources in gene banks have not been evaluated for the aforementioned stressors in context of their adaptation to climate change. The present study assessed 48 sorghum genotypes and two check varieties under combined pre-flowering drought and heat stress which has received insufficient attention compared to post- flowering stress despite its significant negative effects on the development of yield components. A potted experiment was set up in a split-plot arrangement of treatments in a randomized complete block design with three replicates in two consecutive seasons 2021/22 and 2022/23. Basal diameter, plant height, canopy temperature depression, relative leaf water content, cell membrane stability, leaf area, panicle length and grain weight were measured at flowering after stress inductions except for grain weight that was assessed at physiological maturity. The F-test revealed significant main effects of stress, genotype and their interactions on some traits in both seasons. The dual stresses negatively affected all the traits except basal stem diameter and showed no significant effect on relative leaf water content. Stress treatments had notable yield reductions of 7.2 % and 5 % in the seasons 2021/22 and 2022/23 respectively. Significant effect of the interaction between genotype and stress was observed in canopy temperature depression, basal stem diameter, panicle length and yield. Genotypes IS24426, IS12391 and NPGRC3093 were identified as the most stable and tolerant in terms of grain weight. Principal component analysis revealed that plant stem height, panicle length, canopy temperature depression and grain weight were contributors of most variation in assessed genotypes under combined stresses. Canopy temperature was found to have a weak positive (r2 = 0.29) and significant correlation with GW as well as a highly significant weak negative (−0.37) correlation with LA. A weak positive correlation (r2 = 0.30) was also observed between LA and BSD. The highest direct effect on GW was noted in CTD, while PL had notable indirect effects through CTD and SPH. The genotypes were grouped into eight distinct clusters using the hierarchical clustering technique with one cluster with two genotypes namely IS24272 and IS29925 identified for dual purposes (grain and forage) characterized by moderate plant stem height, largest leaves and highest grain yield. Sorghum [ Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] grain yield is vulnerable to drought stress. Therefore, developing appropriate technologies to mitigate drought is essential. We hypothesize that inhibition of photosynthesis and reproductive success by drought in sorghum can be improved by enhanced osmolyte accumulation and antioxidant defence system by foliar application of nanoselenium. In this study, the ecotoxicity potential and the physiological basis of drought alleviation by nanoselenium were evaluated. Nanoselenium did not cause toxicity to soil, aquatic and terrestrial organisms up to 20 mg L−1. During drought, foliar application of nanoselenium at 20 mg L−1 reduced the transpiration rate (16 %) compared to water spray. The superoxide radical content (50 %), hydrogen peroxide content (35 %), and membrane damage (26 %) were reduced, indicating antioxidant activity was exerted by nanoselenium. In contrast, the leaf turgor potential (80 %), relative water content (17 %), reducing sugars (57 %), non-reducing sugars (11 %), and proline (35 %) contents were increased by nanoselenium than water spray, indicating a higher tissue water content was maintained, which has increased the photosynthetic rate (26 %). Higher reproductive success in nanoselenium-sprayed plants under drought was associated with reproductive tissue morphology and an increased number of pollen grains attached to the stigma. Foliar application of nanoselenium at 20 mg L−1 increased seed-set percentage (21 %) and seed yield (26 %) under drought than control. A similar response was observed by foliar spray with sodium selenate. Overall, foliar application of nanoselenium at 20 mg L−1 improved the drought tolerance of sorghum by reducing the transpiration rate and increasing the antioxidant defense system. Summary: In this study, the effect of different levels (1%–5%) of whole and defatted Moringa oleifera leaf powder (MOLP) on the nutritional composition, physicochemical properties, protein digestibility and consumer acceptability of sorghum mahewu was investigated. The MOLP was boiled and added to the fermented sorghum mahewu. The results demonstrated that sorghum mahewu enriched with whole and defatted MOLP had higher amounts (P < 0.05) of protein, ash and fibre content compared to the control sample. Moreover, minerals, amino acid contents and protein digestibility of the enriched sorghum mahewu samples were significantly improved compared to the control sample. The pH decreased with an increasing proportion of MOLP ranging from 4.36 to 4.09 (mahewu enriched with whole MOLP) and from 4.36 to 4.17 (mahewu enriched with defatted MOLP). Sorghum mahewu samples enriched with whole and defatted MOLP had higher contents of total titratable acid compared to the control sample, while the total soluble solids and viscosity decreased. In terms of colour profile, the b*, and chroma values of sorghum mahewu increased with an increasing percentage of whole and defatted MOLP while L* and a* values decreased. Regarding overall liking, sorghum mahewu enriched with 1% whole and defatted MOLP did not differ (P > 0.05) from the control sample. Therefore, sorghum mahewu must be enriched with low percentages of MOLP to improve its acceptance among consumers. These findings suggest that incorporating medicinal plants such as boiled MOLP to basic foods produced from sorghum flour could improve their nutritional profile and protein digestibility. Hydrogen, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and methane coproduction from sweet sorghum stems using bacterial consortium was investigated as an efficient and sustainable pre-treatment strategy to improve energy recovery. Integrated two-stage dark fermentation and methanization approach aimed to reduce fractionation, juice extraction, and pre-treatment steps to improve the efficiency and sustainability of stalks energy bioconversion. Stems biomass loading did not significantly influence hydrogen and VFAs productivities. Energy recovery yields were (7.07) and (10.01) MJ/kg dry matter (DM), respectively, for raw stem single dark fermentation (DF) and methanization processes, corresponding to 41.22% and 58.37% of raw stalk energy potential. Methanogenic potential increase of 31.9% and energy bioconversion yield of 13.21 MJ/kg DM were reached for solid residues from DF (80.75% of their energy content), suggesting that bacterial consortium efficiently pre-treated sorghum stalk fibers. Coupling process led to 88.74% net biomass energy recovery yield, corresponding respectively to 57.38% and 40.23% more than single DF and methanization. Fiber degradation ability of DF bacterial consortium significantly contributed to improve sorghum stalk energy recovery efficiency and cost-competitiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shoot branches grow from axillary buds and play a crucial role in shaping shoot architecture and determining crop yield. Shade signals inactivate phytochrome B (phyB) and induce bud dormancy, thereby inhibiting shoot branching. Prior transcriptome profiling of axillary bud dormancy in a phyB‐deficient mutant (58M, phyB‐1) and bud outgrowth in wild‐type (100M, PHYB) sorghum genotypes identified differential expression of genes associated with flowering, plant hormones, and sugars, including SbCN2, SbNCED3, SbCKX1, SbACO1, SbGA2ox1, and SbCwINVs. This study examined the expression of these genes during bud dormancy induced by shade and defoliation in 100M sorghum. The aim was to elucidate the molecular mechanisms activated by shade in axillary buds by comparing them with those activated by defoliation. The expression of marker genes for sugar levels suggests shade and defoliation reduce the sugar supply to the buds and induce bud dormancy. Intriguingly, both shade signals and defoliation downregulated SbNCED3, suggesting that ABA might not play a role in promoting axillary bud dormancy in sorghum. Whereas the cytokinin (CK) degrading gene SbCKX1 was upregulated solely by shade signals in the buds, the CK inducible genes SbCGA1 and SbCwINVs were downregulated during both shade‐ and defoliation‐induced bud dormancy. This indicates a decrease in CK levels in the dormant buds. Shade signals dramatically upregulated SbCN2, an ortholog of the Arabidopsis TFL1 known for inhibiting flowering, whereas defoliation did not increase SbCN2 expression in the buds. Removing shade temporarily downregulated SbCN2 in dormant buds, further indicating its expression is not always correlated with bud dormancy. Because shade signals also trigger a systemic early flowering signal, SbCN2 might be activated to protect the buds from transitioning to flowering before growing into branches. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that shade signals activate two distinct molecular mechanisms in sorghum buds: one induces dormancy by reducing CK and sugars, whereas the other inhibits flowering by activating SbCN2. Given the agricultural significance of TFL1‐like genes, the rapid regulation of SbCN2 by light signals in axillary buds revealed in this study warrants further investigation to explore its potential in crop improvement strategies. In warm and humid regions, the productivity of sorghum is significantly limited by the fungal hemibiotrophic pathogen Colletotrichum sublineola, the causal agent of anthracnose, a problematic disease of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) that can result in grain and biomass yield losses of up to 50%. Despite available genomic resources of both the host and fungal pathogen, the molecular basis of sorghum-C. sublineola interactions are poorly understood. By employing a dual-RNA sequencing approach, the molecular crosstalk between sorghum and C. sublineola can be elucidated. In this study, we examined the transcriptomes of four resistant sorghum accessions from the sorghum association panel (SAP) at varying time points post-infection with C. sublineola. Approximately 0.3% and 93% of the reads mapped to the genomes of C. sublineola and Sorghum bicolor, respectively. Expression profiling of in vitro versus in planta C. sublineola at 1-, 3-, and 5-days post-infection (dpi) indicated that genes encoding secreted candidate effectors, carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), and membrane transporters increased in expression during the transition from the biotrophic to the necrotrophic phase (3 dpi). The hallmark of the pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP)-triggered immunity in sorghum includes the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phytoalexins. The majority of effector candidates secreted by C. sublineola were predicted to be localized in the host apoplast, where they could interfere with the PAMP-triggered immunity response, specifically in the host ROS signaling pathway. The genes encoding critical molecular factors influencing pathogenicity identified in this study are a useful resource for subsequent genetic experiments aimed at validating their contributions to pathogen virulence. Soil quality is defined as the ability of soil to maintain the soil environment and the biosphere. Due to the limitation of salt and alkali stress, soil quality can be reduced, which in turn affects agricultural production. Biochar is widely used in saline-alkali land improvement because of its special pore structure and strong ion exchange ability, while Piriformospora indica is widely used in saline-alkali land improvement because it can symbiose with plants and improve plant stress resistance. However, the synergistic effect of combined biochar application and inoculation of P. indica on the quality of saline-alkali soil and plant development is uncertain. Hence, we investigated the combined influences of biochar and P. indica on the soil physicochemical characteristics, as well as the growth and chlorophyll florescence of sorghum-sudangrass hybrids (Sorghum bicolor Ã--Sorghum sudane) in our study. The results indicated that after applying biochar and P. indica together, there was a considerable drop in soil pH, conductivity, Na+, and Clâ' concentrations. Meanwhile, the soil organic matter (SOM), available phosphorus (AP), and alkaline hydrolyzable nitrogen (AN) increased by 151.81%, 50.84%, and 103.50%, respectively, when the Bamboo biochar was combined with 120 ml/pot of P. indica. Eventually, sorghum-sudangrass hybrid biomass, transpiration rate, and chlorophyll content increased by 111.69%, 204.98%, and 118.54%, respectively. According to our findings, using P. indica and biochar together can enhance soil quality and plant growth. Reducing vulnerability of smallholder farmers to climate change is a global issue. One approach viewed as important in reducing farmers' vulnerability to climate change is Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA). CSA is often seen as an approach to redefine, reposition and sustainably manage agriculture. Given the importance of CSA practices in sustaining the food needs of many farm households in sub-Saharan Africa and Ghana, this study investigates CSA practices that were introduced to farmers by Center for Indigenous Knowledge and Development (CIKOD), interrogates the contributions of CSA to reducing farmers vulnerability to climate change and established the relationship between CSA and climate change adaptation. The study employed a mixed method approach, using 146 smallholder millet and sorghum farmers. Questionnaire and interviews were used to generate primary data for analysis. Descriptive statistics, involving Chisquare test and relative importance index were used to analyze the questionnaire while thematic analytical approach was used to analyze the interviews. The results of the study revealed that CSA practices such as crop rotation, weed control, contour farming, and land rotation are deployed by smallholder farmers to respond to drought, dry spell and flood in the Municipality. Asset holding capacity, credit, access to climate information, and extension services were found to be key determinants of farmers' adoption of CSA practices. The study recommends the need for the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to provide some technical support to smallholder farmers to successfully adopt these practices for sustainable farming. Again, the study recommends the need for nongovernmental organizations and development partners, which over the years have shown interest in promoting CSA practices among farmers, to continuous to support and promote the adoption of CSA by farmers. Nowadays, the consumption of functional foods, such as plant‐based beverages, is increasing due to their health‐promoting properties. The low extraction yield of nutritional and functional components is considered a major challenge during the production of sorghum‐based beverages (SBB), as well as their sensorial properties. This investigation studied the effects of various treatments (acidic using phosphoric acid, enzymatic using α‐amylase, germination, germination‐acidic, germination‐enzymatic, and acidic‐enzymatic) on the functional, nutritional, and sensorial properties of SBB. The two‐stage acidic‐enzymatic treatment demonstrated the highest extraction yield, dry matter, ash, carbohydrates, and reducing sugar contents, as well as the lowest starch content (p < .05). Furthermore, the highest protein content (0.98%) was achieved by the germination treatments of sorghum grains. While the highest fat content was achieved by the acidic treatment (1.38%), the germination‐acidic treatment exhibited the highest energy value (26.02 kcal/100 mL). Moreover, the total phenolic content of the acidic‐enzymatic treatment (44.56 mg GAE/L) was significantly higher than that of other treatments. However, all treatments demonstrated lower antioxidant properties compared to the control treatment (142.85 mg BHT eq./L). Furthermore, the sensory evaluation of the germination and germination‐enzymatic treatments showed acceptable scores (≥7) for consumers. In conclusion, the results indicated that the two‐stage treatments of sorghum, especially the acidic‐enzymatic treatment, were more effective than single treatments for the extraction of functional and nutritional components during the production of SBB. Six sorghum varieties containing different amylose were selected to investigate the structural and physicochemical characteristics of starches and endosperm texture of grains. The results showed that the outer layer endosperm of sorghum grain changed from waxy to corneous, and its starch granules were more compactly packed and exhibited the spindle‐shaped holes with the increase of amylose content. Higher amylose starch granules exhibited fewer and smaller micropores on the surface and were more likely to deform and agglomerate into larger amorphous particles after heated. Amylose content of sorghum starches was negatively correlated to granule size, relative crystallinity, and the proportion of the long branch chains (DP = 25–36 and > 36), whereas positively correlated to the proportion of the short branch chains (DP = 6–12 and 13–24). Amylose content had negative correlations with To, Tp, ΔH, PV, and SDS (p < .05), positive corrections with FV, SB, and RDS (p < .05), and no correlations with Tc, HPV, BD, and RS. It could be concluded that amylose content affected the endosperm texture of sorghum grain and had strong correlations with structural and physicochemical properties of sorghum starch. Social Impact Statement Summary The parasitic weed Striga affects crops such as sorghum, maize, millet, and rice in over 40 countries on the African continent and negatively impacts the livelihood of over 300 million small‐holder farmers. Striga seeds can remain dormant in the soil for many years until they are triggered to germinate by germination stimulants, called strigolactones, exuded from the roots of their host. Here, the current knowledge on the biosynthesis of the strigolactones, their structural diversity, and biological relevance are reviewed. This knowledge could improve Striga control and thus improve the livelihood of small‐holder farmers.The parasitic plant genus Striga causes major yield losses to several crops such as sorghum, millet, and rice in arid and semi‐arid regions of the tropics. For Striga to successfully parasitize its host plant, two conditions should be fulfilled: suitable germination conditions and the presence of a host plant that exudes so‐called germination stimulants, strigolactones, that are also as a signal to attract beneficial micro‐organisms such as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Different plant species exude qualitatively and quantitatively different blends of strigolactones, and this plays a key role in determining Striga host specificity. Sorghum lgs1 genotypes with a mutation in a sulfotransferase (SbSOT4A), for example, exude orobanchol and are resistant to Striga, while 5‐deoxystrigol is the major strigolactone exuded by susceptible cultivars with wild type SbSOT4A. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge on the biosynthesis of the large diversity of strigolactones, how SbSOT4A may be involved in this, and how strigolactone diversity may contribute to microbiome recruitment. Sorghum is a crop that is susceptible to low temperatures. However, due to the extreme global temperatures, new genotypes have been bred to adapt better to cold climates. Therefore, to better understand the metabolic and molecular differences that may contribute to the improved cold tolerance of these genotypes, it is essential to investigate whether specific molecules play a key role in determining the degree of sorghum tolerance. Furthermore, identifying genes associated with cold tolerance may assist in the development of more robust and productive sorghum cultivars. Here, we analysed the changes in selected elements of the antioxidant metabolism, genes, and miRNAs in two sorghum varieties with different degrees of tolerance to cold stress at different times of exposure to cold stress. The high expression of SbCBF6 in response to cold treatment in early time in the tolerant variety suggests its involvement in the cold response, thereby facilitating a better adaptation of the plant to cold conditions. MiR398 and miR394 showed contrasting behaviour in both varieties in low temperatures, resulting in interesting miRNAs in the degree of sorghum tolerance. MiR319, a marker for the selection of cold‐tolerant cultivars, presents a decrease, suggesting that the better capacity to repress the expression of several members of TCP family of transcription factor genes might be involved in better tolerance to cold stress. This study shows the changes of molecules of interest in response to cold stress in sorghum, marking the difference between cold‐susceptible and cold‐tolerant sorghum plants, which can contribute to selecting tolerant genotypes, allowing new strategies to enhance crop productivity and food security, in regions where low temperatures significantly constrain crop growth and yield. Stalk and root rots of cultivated sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) are caused by several Fusarium species worldwide. This study evaluated Fusarium diversity, pathogenicity and population structure amongst 212 isolates obtained from 169 sorghum plants from commercial field crops in eastern Australia. Sequences of translation elongation factor‐1α (tef‐1α), RNA polymerase II largest subunit (rpb1), RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (rpb2) and calmodulin (cmdA) were used to construct multilocus phylogenies that enabled the identification of 16 Fusarium species in Fusarium chlamydosporum species complex (FCSC), Fusarium fujikuroi species complex (FFSC), Fusarium incarnatum‐equiseti species complex and Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC). The majority of isolates (n = 171) belonged to FFSC. The pathogenicity of 17 selected isolates was determined by artificial inoculation of sorghum seedlings and completing Koch's postulates. Isolates of species in FFSC were significantly (p < 0.05) more aggressive as root pathogens in sorghum seedlings than isolates of other species tested and widely distributed across all sampling sites. Amongst the 35 isolates of FOSC, 26 belonged to Fusarium cili, which is only known as an endophyte from healthy roots of Rosa roxburghii in China. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), identified as an invasive pest worldwide, has severely threatened agricultural production and food security in India. To formulate eco‐friendly integrated pest management strategies for S. frugiperda in its new invasive habitat, the basic knowledge about demographic parameters and damage potential of this pest is crucial. The effects of five host crops viz. maize (Zea mays L.), popcorn (Zea mays everta Sturt), sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata Sturt), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.)) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) on the development and food consumption of S. frugiperda were examined. Population projection curves based on life table and consumption rates were drawn on different hosts using computer simulation. The pre‐adult development of S. frugiperda was fastest on popcorn (28.02 days), maize (28.04 days) and sweet corn (28.31 days) but slowest on soybean (34.83 days). The highest net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase were observed on maize. The feeding potential of S. frugiperda was also highest on maize. The maximum consumption of the sixth larval instar was observed on maize (19470.47 mm2) while lowest on soybean (9033.67 mm2). In the simulation period of 90 days, the fastest growth of S. frugiperda was expected on maize, popcorn and sweet corn while the slowest on soybean. High larval and pupal survival recorded on the non‐maize hosts (sorghum and soybean) reflects that fall armyworm could be an obstacle in their production as well as in the success of maize‐soybean intercropping system. Simulations based on age‐stage, two‐sex life table could be helpful in predicting the most appropriate time for the pesticide application as well as augmentative releases of egg and larval parasitoids for the control of fall armyworm. Fire and explosion hazards pose significant safety concerns in the processing and storage of biomass particles, warranting the safe utilization of these particles. This study employed scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and cone calorimetry to investigate the thermal hazards and toxicity of raw biomass particles from four prevalent agricultural crops in China: rice, sorghum, corn, and reed. Among the samples, corn exhibited the highest heat output of 8006.82 J/g throughout the thermal decomposition process. The quantitative evaluation of critical heat flux, heat release rate intensity, fire growth rate index (FIGRA), post-ignition fire acceleration (PIFA) and flashover potential (X) revealed a substantial fire risk inherent to all the examined straw samples. Notably, corn displayed the lowest FIGRA value of 8.30 kW/m2 s, while rice demonstrated the minimum PIFA value of 16.11 kW/m2 s. Moreover, the X values for all four biomass particle types exceeded 10 under varying external heat flux levels, indicating their high propensity for fire hazards. Analysis of CO and CO2 emissions during combustion showed all four biomass samples exhibited high concentrations throughout, from the initial stages to the end. The pollen wall protects pollen during dispersal and is critical for pollination recognition. In the Poaceae family, the pollen exine stereostructure exhibits a high degree of conservation with similar patterns across species. However, there remains controversy regarding the conservation of key factors involved in its formation among various Poaceae species. EPAD1, as a gene specific to the Poaceae family, and its orthologous genes play a conserved role in pollen wall formation in wheat and rice. However, they do not appear to have significant functions in maize. To further confirm the conserved function of EPAD1 in Poaceae, we performed an analysis on four EPAD1 orthologs from two distinct sub-clades within the Poaceae family. The two functional redundant barley EPAD1 genes (HvEPAD1 and HvEPAD2) from the BOP clade, along with the single copy of sorghum (SbEPAD1) and millet (SiEPAD1) from the PACMAD clade were examined. The CRISPR-Cas9-generated mutants all exhibited defects in pollen wall formation, consistent with previous findings on EPAD1 in rice and wheat. Interestingly, in barley, hvepad2 single mutant also showed apical spikelets abortion, aligning with a decreased expression level of HvEPAD1 and HvEPAD2 from the apical to the bottom of the spike. Our finding provides evidence that EPAD1 orthologs contribute to Poaceae specific pollen exine pattern formation via maintaining primexine integrity despite potential variations in copy numbers across different species. Background: In recent years, covalent modifications on RNA nucleotides have emerged as pivotal moieties influencing the structure, function, and regulatory processes of RNA Polymerase II transcripts such as mRNAs and lncRNAs. However, our understanding of their biological roles and whether these roles are conserved across eukaryotes remains limited. Results: In this study, we leveraged standard polyadenylation-enriched RNA-sequencing data to identify and characterize RNA modifications that introduce base-pairing errors into cDNA reads. Our investigation incorporated data from three Poaceae (Zea mays, Sorghum bicolor, and Setaria italica), as well as publicly available data from a range of stress and genetic contexts in Sorghum and Arabidopsis thaliana. We uncovered a strong enrichment of RNA covalent modifications (RCMs) deposited on a conserved core set of nuclear mRNAs involved in photosynthesis and translation across these species. However, the cohort of modified transcripts changed based on environmental context and developmental program, a pattern that was also conserved across flowering plants. We determined that RCMs can partly explain accession-level differences in drought tolerance in Sorghum, with stress-associated genes receiving a higher level of RCMs in a drought tolerant accession. To address function, we determined that RCMs are significantly enriched near exon junctions within coding regions, suggesting an association with splicing. Intriguingly, we found that these base-pair disrupting RCMs are associated with stable mRNAs, are highly correlated with protein abundance, and thus likely associated with facilitating translation. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) holds a significant position as the fifth most vital cereal crop globally. Its drought resistance and robust biomass production, coupled with commendable nutritional value, make sorghum a promising choice for animal feed. Nevertheless, the utilization of sorghum in animal production faces hurdles of dhurrin (a cyanogenic glycoside) poisoning. While dhurrin serves as a protective secondary metabolite during sorghum growth, the resulting highly toxic hydrogen cyanide poses a significant threat to animal safety. This review extensively examines the biometabolic processes of dhurrin, the pivotal genes involved in the regulation of dhurrin biosynthesis, and the factors influencing dhurrin content in sorghum. It delves into the impact of dhurrin on animal production and explores measures to mitigate its content, aiming to provide insights for advancing research on dhurrin metabolism regulation in sorghum and its rational utilization in animal production. Light-flavor Baijiu (LFB) fermentation is a representative spontaneous mixedculture solid-state fermentation process in which sorghum is used as the raw material. Raw materials and microorganisms are crucial to the flavor formation and quality of LFB. However, the microbial and physicochemical dynamics of different sorghum varieties during LFB fermentation, as well as their impact on flavor compounds are still largely unknown. Herein, PacBio single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing and headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) were applied to investigate microbial community succession and volatile flavor formation in glutinous/non-glutinous sorghum-based fermented grains during LFB fermentation. Fermented grains made of glutinous sorghum Liangnuo No. 1 (GLN) had higher bacterial α-diversity and lower fungal α-diversity than those with fermented grains prepared with non-glutinous red sorghum (NRS) (p < 0.05). The dominant microbial species were Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Acetobacter pasteurinus, and Lactobacillus helveticus, the latter two of which were the predominant bacteria observed at the end of fermentation in GLN and NRS, respectively. Moisture content and reducing sugar had a more significant impact on the microorganisms in GLN, while amino acid nitrogen, total free amino acids, and residual starch were the main driving factors driving the microbial community in NRS. The correlation network and discriminant analysis indicated that a relatively high content of 4-vinylguaiacol showed a significant positive association with significant differential microbial species in GLN. Introduction: Predicting the performance (yield or other integrative traits) of cultivated plants is complex because it involves not only estimating the genetic value of the candidates to selection, the interactions between the genotype and the environment (GxE) but also the epistatic interactions between genomic regions for a given trait, and the interactions between the traits contributing to the integrative trait. Classical Genomic Prediction (GP) models mostly account for additive effects and are not suitable to estimate non-additive effects such as epistasis. Therefore, the use of machine learning and deep learning methods has been previously proposed to model those non-linear effects. Methods: In this study, we propose a type of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) called Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and compare it to two classical GP regression methods for their ability to predict an integrative trait of sorghum: aboveground fresh weight accumulation. We also suggest that the use of a crop growth model (CGM) can enhance predictions of integrative traits by decomposing them into more heritable intermediate traits. Results: The results show that CNN outperformed both LASSO and Bayes C methods in accuracy, suggesting that CNN are better suited to predict integrative traits. Furthermore, the predictive ability of the combined CGM-GP approach surpassed that of GP without the CGM integration, irrespective of the regression method used. Discussion: These results are consistent with recent works aiming to develop Genome-to-Phenotype models and advocate for the use of non-linear prediction methods, and the use of combined CGM-GP to enhance the prediction of crop performances. SUMMARY Photosynthetic organisms must cope with rapid fluctuations in light intensity. Nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) enables the dissipation of excess light energy as heat under high light conditions, whereas its relaxation under low light maximizes photosynthetic productivity. We quantified variation in NPQ kinetics across a large sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) association panel in four environments, uncovering significant genetic control for NPQ. A genome‐wide association study (GWAS) confidently identified three unique regions in the sorghum genome associated with NPQ and suggestive associations in an additional 61 regions. We detected strong signals from the sorghum ortholog of Arabidopsis thaliana Suppressor Of Variegation 3 (SVR3) involved in plastid–nucleus signaling. By integrating GWAS results for NPQ across maize (Zea mays) and sorghum‐association panels, we identified a second gene, Non‐yellowing 1 (NYE1), originally studied by Gregor Mendel in pea (Pisum sativum) and involved in the degradation of photosynthetic pigments in light‐harvesting complexes. Analysis of nye1 insertion alleles in A. thaliana confirmed the effect of this gene on NPQ kinetics in eudicots. We extended our comparative genomics GWAS framework across the entire maize and sorghum genomes, identifying four additional loci involved in NPQ kinetics. Sorghum is one of the most important and under-utilized cereal crops in the Arid and Semi-Arid land (ASAL) regions of Kenya. The crop is grown in drought-prone marginal agricultural areas of Western Central and Eastern and coastal regions of Kenya. The diverse biotic and abiotic constraints including climate changes reduce sorghum productivity. Sorghum technology generators continue promoting suitable management practices and innovations to cushion and improve the resilience of smallholder farmers against the adverse effects of climate change. These interventions contribute to the attainment of not only household and national food security but also enhance incomes. Despite the increasing sorghum production and utilization in West Pokot County, there is limited knowledge of the status of production, processing, and utilization technologies. The aim of this study was to assess the current sorghum production, processing, utilization technology, innovations, and management practices among smallholder farmers. A household survey was undertaken using a jointly developed structured questionnaire by a multi- and inter-disciplinary team of researchers. Using a multi-stage sampling technique, 599 households were randomly selected and interviewed. Data collected were on household and farm characteristics including technologies. The study revealed that compared to maize and pasture, land allocated to sorghum enterprise was relatively low ranging from 0.32 acres to 0.80 acres with an average of 0.73 acres. The adoption of various sorghum technological components was also low. Adoption of improved sorghum varieties was less than 7% while fertilizer use was less than 20%. These contribute to low crop yields of about 140kg per acre. In addition, value addition was also low. Sorghum use was limited to ugali (56%) and porridge (39%) against the diverse value-added products including bread baking. and industrial processing of pure and blended products. More farmer and stakeholders training need to be done. In order to fully upgrade the sorghum value chain; there is the need to have targeted sorghum policies focusing on a range of activities along the value chain. Sorghum polyphenols, as a natural active ingredient, have many potential health benefits. Through microcapsule embedding technology, the stability and efficacy of sorghum polyphenols can be improved. The study targets sorghum polyphenols as the active ingredient, uses sodium alginate solution to prepare sorghum polyphenol microcapsules, and conducts single factor orthogonal experiments, thermogravimetric analysis, and determination of sorghum polyphenol release rate. Through single factor investigation and orthogonal test combination, it is found that when the mass fraction of calcium chloride is 2. 5%, the mass fraction of sodium alginate is 2. 25%, the mass fraction of sorghum polyphenols is 0. 3%, the embedding time is 0. 5 h, and the mass fraction of chitosan is 1. 5%, the embedding rate of microcapsules could reach 87. 19%. The results show that polyphenols are the most important factor affecting the embedding rate, followed by chitosan, while sodium alginate, calcium chloride, and embedding time has relatively small effect. The microcapsules prepared under the optimal combination conditions have a tighter embedding structure and good embedding effect. The release time of microcapsules in intestinal fluid is shorter and more efficient than in gastric fluid, with a maximum release rate of 83. 16%. This rapid release can effectively prevent changes in sorghum polyphenols during the release process in the body and improve the utilization rate of active substances by the human body. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is the fifth largest cereal crop in the world and is an important food and feed crop. However, the understanding of the chloroplast genome of sorghum is limited, especially for some landrace varieties. In this study, the complete chloroplast (cp) genomes of 10 sorghum varieties from southwestern China were assembled and analysed in depth. The genome sizes ranged between 140.644 and 140.814 bp; the b3 variety had the smallest genome size, and the b6, b7 and b8 varieties had the largest. Highly conserved sequences were found among the 10 cp genomes. A total of 136 genes, including 88 protein-coding genes, 40 tRNAs and 8 rRNAs, were found in each cp genome. Comparative genomic analysis revealed that the large single-copy (LSC) region had more SNPs and indels than the inverted repeat (IR) and small single-copy (SSC) regions. Furthermore, some genes, including matK, matK-trnk, psbM-petN, rps12-rpl20, and ccsA, exhibited greater sequence variation than others. Furthermore, phylogenetic analysis revealed that b3 had a distant genetic relationship with the other 9 varieties. Our findings provide valuable information for a deeper understanding of the genetic structure of sorghum germplasm resources globally and provide an important foundation for subsequent genetic improvement of sorghum. The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of pre-emergence herbicides mixture applied to the soil with and without dead cover crops (Sorghum bicolor) for the control of Amaranthus hybridus L. (smooth pigweed) and its selectivity in soybeans. This study was structured in split plot (2 × 6 + 2), where factor A plots (with and without dead cover) and factor B six herbicides mixture: flumioxazin + S-metolachlor (50.4 + 1,008 g a.i. ha−1), flumioxazin + imazethapyr (60 + 127.2 g a.i. ha−1), pyroxasulfone + sulfentrazone (137.6 + 160 g a.i. ha−1), diuron + sulfentrazone (400 + 200 g a.i. ha−1), metribuzin + S-metolachlor (326.4 + 1,344 g a.i. ha−1) and sulfentrazone + imazethapyr (200 + 100 g a.i. ha−1) and two untreated control plots. As for the results, the herbicides flumioxazin + S-metolachlor, flumioxazin + imazethapyr and pyroxasulfone + sulfentrazone showed excellent control (97–99%) and were not influenced by the plot with and without dead cover. They also showed higher yield soybeans (<2,244 kg ha−1). All herbicides were selective to the soybeans. Overall, pre-emergence herbicides and cover crops were efficient methods for the control of A. hybridus, which farmers should use to avoid losses in yield soybeans due to weed competition. To effectively combat the re-infestation of boll weevils (Anthonomus grandis L.) in cotton fields, it is necessary to address the detection of volunteer cotton (VC) plants (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in rotation crops such as corn (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). The current practice involves manual field scouting at the field edges, which often leads to the oversight of VC plants growing in the middle of fields alongside corn and sorghum. As these VC plants reach the pinhead squaring stage (5–6 leaves), they can become hosts for boll weevil pests. Consequently, it becomes crucial to detect, locate, and accurately spot-spray these plants with appropriate chemicals. This paper focuses on the application of YOLOv5m to detect and locate VC plants during the tasseling (VT) growth stage of cornfields. Our results demonstrate that VC plants can be detected with a mean average precision (mAP) of 79% at an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 50% and a classification accuracy of 78% on images sized 1207 × 923 pixels. The average detection inference speed is 47 frames per second (FPS) on the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU-16 GB and 0.4 FPS on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 GPU, which underscores the relevance and impact of detection speed on the feasibility of real-time applications. Additionally, we show the application of a customized unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for spot-spray applications through simulation based on the developed computer vision (CV) algorithm. This UAS-based approach enables the near-real-time detection and mitigation of VC plants in corn fields, with near-real-time defined as approximately 0.02 s per frame on the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU and 2.5 s per frame on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 GPU, thereby offering an efficient management solution for controlling boll weevil pests. Salinity is a serious abiotic stress that limits crop production and food security. Micronutrient application has shown promising results in mitigating the toxic impacts of salinity. This study assessed the impacts of zinc seed priming (ZSP) on the germination, growth, physiological and biochemical functioning of sorghum cultivars. The study comprised sorghum cultivars (JS-2002 and JS-263), salinity stress (control (0 mM) and 120 mM)), and control and ZSP (4 mM). Salinity stress reduced germination and seedling growth by increasing electrolyte leakage (EL: 60.65%), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2: 109.50%), malondialdehyde (MDA; 115.30%), sodium (Na), and chloride (Cl) accumulation and decreasing chlorophyll synthesis, relative water contents (RWC), total soluble proteins (TSPs), and potassium (K) uptake and accumulation. Nonetheless, ZSP mitigated the deleterious impacts of salinity and led to faster germination and better seedling growth. Zinc seed priming improved the chlorophyll synthesis, leaf water contents, antioxidant activities (ascorbate peroxide: APX, catalase: CAT, peroxidase: POD, superoxide dismutase: SOD), TSPs, proline, K uptake and accumulation, and reduced EL, MDA, and H2O2 production, as well as the accumulation of toxic ions (Na and Cl), thereby promoting better germination and growth. Thus, these findings suggested that ZSP can mitigate the toxicity of salinity by favoring nutrient homeostasis, antioxidant activities, chlorophyll synthesis, osmolyte accumulation, and maintaining leaf water status. Experiments were conducted in 2020 and 2021 in College Station, TX; Stoneville, MS; and Blackville, SC, to evaluate the potential of grain sorghum to serve as a trap crop for Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), a nursery crop for natural enemies of H. zea, and a source of Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus (HearNPV) for H. zea management in cotton. The experiments consisted of three treatments, including cotton-only, non-treated cotton–sorghum, and HearNPV-treated cotton–sorghum. Variables, including percent injury to fruiting forms, parasitized H. zea larvae, egg density, H. zea larval density, beneficial arthropod numbers, and HearNPV prevalence, were compared between the treatments. Growing cotton in an intercropping system with grain sorghum did not result in a consistent increase in H. zea control and beneficial arthropod density relative to the cotton-only treatment. Additionally, our results did not show sufficient evidence that grain sorghum interplanted with cotton can serve as a source of HearNPV that can favor H. zea control in cotton. However, we found that, if maintained in the cotton canopy, HearNPV may favor some level of H. zea suppression in cotton. Based on our HearNPV infection analyses using PCR, chrysopids, coccinellids, pentatomids, reduviids, formicids, anthocorids, and spiders appeared to be carrying HearNPV. The virus was detected consistently in specimens of coccinellids, pentatomids, and reduviids across both years of the study. We suggest that further investigation on virus efficacy against H. zea in cotton using the sorghum–cotton system as well as the ability of grain sorghum to serve as a H. zea trap crop and source of H. zea natural enemies be considered in future studies. The Czech Republic has diverse soil conditions, which cause notable differences in crop water balance (WB). To assess the long-term crop WB and crop water stress (CWS) intensity in rainfed conditions, four conventional eight- and ten-year crop rotations (CRs) with perennial forage (alfalfa), cereals, oilseeds, root crops and legumes were proposed for a heterogeneous lowland soil region (six texture classes) in eastern Bohemia. Two of the CRs were selected irrespective of the WB (eight-year, C-8; ten-year, C-10), and the other two were designated according to soil water resources and crop water requirements (CWRs) as water-saving (W-S) and water-demanding (W-D) for this region. All CRs had a negative WB on average (i.e., CWRs exceeded the available water resources), with varying degrees of CWS (categories 1 (low) to 4 (high)). The W-S CR reduced the WB deficit relative to the other CRs by omitting maize, sunflower and sugar beet and including sorghum, and expanded the proportion of the area not affected by CWS (categories 1–2) to 33% for predominantly loamy soils. In contrast, categories 1–2 in the C-8, C-10 and W-D CRs represented only 15%, 14% and 7% of the area, respectively. Other areas were significantly affected by CWS (categories 3–4) and showed a high risk of yield reduction. The objective was to evaluate the agronomic and production characteristics and the quality of forage sorghum for silage production, using a moisture-retaining polymer (MRP) in the soil during the agricultural off-season. To assess the agronomic characteristics of the forage sorghum, four treatments were used, represented by the MRP hydration intervals (Control, 0, 5, and 10 days) and four replications. The qualitative characteristics of the silage were evaluated in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme, and the same MRP hydration intervals were used for the agronomic assessment, with and without the concentrate mixture at the time of ensiling, both in a randomized block design. There were differences (p < 0.05) for all morphological variables, agronomic variables, and weight constituents of forage sorghum. There was an interaction effect (p < 0.05) between the MRP hydration intervals and the concentrate mixture at the time of ensiling for gas losses, silage dry matter recovery, and ether extract. There was an effect (p < 0.05) due to the addition of the concentrate mixture at the time of ensiling for in vitro dry matter digestibility and total digestible nutrients. When using MRP at planting and the concentrate mixture at the time of forage sorghum ensiling, a hydration interval of every 5 days is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sorghum, a cereal grain rich in nutrients, is a major source of phenolic compounds that can be altered by different processes, thereby modulating their phenolic content and antioxidant properties. Previous studies have characterised phenolic compounds from pigmented and non-pigmented varieties. However, the impact of processing via the cooking and fermentation of these varieties remains unknown. Wholegrain flour samples of Liberty (WhiteLi1 and WhiteLi2), Bazley (RedBa1 and RedBa2), Buster (RedBu1 and RedBu2), Shawaya black (BlackSb), and Shawaya short black 1 (BlackSs) were cooked, fermented, or both then extracted using acidified acetone. The polyphenol profiles were analysed using a UHPLC-Online ABTS and QTOF LC-MS system. The results demonstrated that combining the fermentation and cooking of the BlackSs and BlackSb varieties led to a significant increase (p < 0.05) in total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities, as determined through DPPH, FRAP, and ABTS assays. The 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity of WhiteLi1, BlackSb, RedBu2, and BlackSs increased by 46%, 32%, 25%, and 10%, respectively, post fermentation and cooking. Conversely, fermentation only or cooking generally resulted in lower phenolic content and antioxidant levels than when samples were fully processed compared to raw. Notably, most of the detected antioxidant peaks (53 phenolic compounds) were only detected in fermented and cooked black and red pericarp varieties. The phenolic compounds with the highest antioxidant activities in pigmented sorghum included 3-aminobenzoic acid, 4-acetylburtyic acid, malic acid, caffeic acid, and luteolin derivative. Furthermore, the growing location of Bellata, NSW, showed more detectable phenolic compounds following processing compared to Croppa Creek, NSW. This study demonstrates that sorghum processing releases previously inaccessible polyphenols, making them available for human consumption and potentially providing added health-promoting properties. Diabetes mellitus, characterized by dysregulated glucose metabolism, oxidative stress, and the formation of advanced glycation end products, poses a significant global health burden. In this study, we explored the potential of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) seeds, known for their abundant phytochemical composition, as a natural remedy for diabetes and its associated damage. High-performance liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis revealed a remarkable phenolic richness in sorghum grains, including gallic acid, quercetin, and the predominant procyanidin B-1, with ecotype-specific variations in flavonoid distribution. Elemental analysis by ICP showed an abundance of macro-elements (Ca, K, Mg), trace elements (Fe, Mn, Si, Zn), and ultra-trace elements (B, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Se, V) essential for human health, supporting its therapeutic and nutritional potential. Additionally, the results demonstrated variable total phenolic contents (188–297 mg GAE/g dE) and total flavonoid contents (66–78 mg QE/g dE), with corresponding differences in antioxidant activities across the five ecotypes. Treatment with sorghum seed extract (SE1) significantly reduced oxidative stress markers, such as malondialdehyde (MDA)by 40% and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by 63%, in diabetic mice, compared to untreated diabetic controls. Moreover, sorghum extracts exhibited a remarkable increase in antioxidant enzyme activities, including a 50% increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and a 60% increase in glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, indicating their potential to bolster antioxidant defenses against diabetes-induced oxidative stress. These findings underscore the therapeutic potential of sorghum seeds in diabetes management and prevention, paving the way for the development of functional foods with enhanced health benefits. The purpose of this study was to alleviate negative impacts of elephant crop-raiding faced by smallholder farmers around the Okavango delta. Although many studies have identified the relationship between crop-raiding and climatic factors, little attention was paid to aligning cropping duration to high rainfall. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how crop maturity duration influences farmers' vulnerability to elephant crop raiding and food loss. An experimental plot consisting of early and late maturing varieties of maize, sorghum and cowpea was set up and monitored in farms adjacent to corridors. Early maturing varieties yielded more (mean = 0.35 tha−1) than later maturing varieties (mean = 0.25 tha−1). The prolonged stay of crops in fields exposed them more to elephants (p < 0.001). Unlike late varieties, early varieties served as an evasion strategy by allowing earlier harvesting when there was adequate rainfall and elephants rarely frequented farms. Late maturing varieties were harvested at 16–19 weeks when elephants frequented the fields. This harvest timing significantly influences the vulnerability of crops to debilitating elephant raiding. This outcome suggests that policy reviews should incorporate more climate action into smallholder farming systems to strengthen SDG 1: no poverty and SDG 2: zero hunger, ease hostility toward elephants and improve elephant conservation. The brown midrib bmr6 and bmr12 mutants of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) have alterations to the phenylpropanoid pathway impairing the activity of cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and/or caffeate5/hydroxyferulate O‐methyl transferase (COMT) enzymes, which inhibit lignin synthesis. Interestingly, these phenylpropanoids can also act as sunscreen compounds in plants and potentially attenuate ultraviolet radiation. We examined the effects of ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B; 280–320 nm) exclusion on growth, cell‐wall constituents and UV‐screening abilities of bmr6, bmr12, a double mutant (bmr6 bmr12; dm) and wild‐type (WT) genotypes of S. bicolor. Plants were grown in a UV‐transparent greenhouse under filters that either transmitted 2.8% (Mylar) or 90% (Aclar) of UV‐B. The greenhouse experiment was a 2 × 4 (UV treatment × genotype) complete factorial design. Sorghum grown under reduced UV were 23% taller and had 22% fewer leaves. Among genotypes, the WT plants were 5%–12% taller than the bmr6, bmr12 and dm mutants. The near‐ambient UV‐B treatment group was more effective at UV screening and had a 16% higher UV‐screening effectiveness than those under reduced UV‐B. Sorghum plants with the bmr6 and dm genotypes had 8%–19% higher UV‐shield than the bmr12 and WT. Plants grown under the reduced UV‐B treatment had 5% less hemicellulose and 6% more cellulose in their cell walls. There were no overall treatment effects on bulk soluble phenolics, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) or lignin concentrations. These results are a possible indication that the bmr mutants of S. bicolor have a varied response to UV‐B exclusion due to alterations in the phenylpropanoid pathway leading to redistribution of metabolites. CLE proteins are a class of signalling factors involved in plant growth and abiotic stress response. They play crucial roles in processes such as cell differentiation, chlorophyll synthesis and abscisic acid (ABA) signal transduction. However, the function of the CLE genes in Sorghum bicolor remains unclear. In this study, 42 sorghum CLE genes were identified, and their evolutionary relationship, gene structure, amino acid sequence and homologous genes were analysed. We also examined the expression levels of CLE genes under various treatment conditions. Transcriptome data showed that there were significant differences in the expression patterns of 42 CLE genes in different tissues and organs. It is worth noting that SbCLE39 is mainly highly expressed in sorghum roots. At the same time, the expression of SbCLE39 decreased significantly under salt and ABA treatment. Compared with wild‐type yeast cells (EV), yeast cells with high expression of SbCLE39 had lower tolerance to salt stress. In addition, the excessive accumulation of ABA caused by external application of SbCLE39p reduced the salt tolerance of sorghum. These findings suggest that SbCLE39 negatively regulates the salt tolerance of sorghum. These results lay a foundation for revealing the mechanism of CLE genes regulating the salt tolerance of sorghum and are of great significance for the cultivation of salt‐tolerant crops. BACKGROUND: Solid‐state fermentation (SSF) has been widely used in the processing of sorghum grain (SG) because it can produce products with improved sensory characteristics. To clarify the influence of different microbial strains on the SSF of SG, especially on the polyphenols content and composition, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Rhizopus oryzae, Aspergillus oryzae, and Neurospora sitophila were used separately and together for SSF of SG. Furthermore, the relationship between the dynamic changes in polyphenols and enzyme activity closely related to the metabolism of polyphenols has also been measured and analyzed. Microstructural changes observed after SSF provide a visual representation of the SSF on the SG. RESULTS: After SSF, tannin content (TC) and free phenolic content (FPC) were decreased by 56.36% and 23.48%, respectively. Polyphenol oxidase, β‐glucosidase and cellulase activities were increased 5.25, 3.27, and 45.57 times, respectively. TC and FPC were negatively correlated with cellulase activity. A positive correlation between FPC and xylanase activity after 30 h SSF became negative after 48 h SSF. The SG surface was fragmented and porous, reducing the blocking effect of cortex. CONCLUSION: Cellulase played a crucial role in promoting the degradation of tannin (antinutrient) and phenolic compounds. Xylanase continued to release flavonoids while microbial metabolism consumed them with the extension of SSF time. Ergot is a fungal disease of many plants but is perhaps most commonly associated with domesticated grasses or cereals, such as rye, wheat, barley, oat, sorghum, millet, maize and rice. Ergot is of historical significance, having been reported for several millennia, but is also of concern in modern agricultural production systems. Caused by many different species within the genus Claviceps, the fungi cause the production of sclerotia, which are typically dark in colour, in place of healthy grain. The sclerotia contain toxins that can make the grain unsafe for consumption by humans or livestock. Ergot can be managed both preharvest as well as postharvest to minimize the presence of sclerotia and their associated toxins in food and feed systems. In this review, we provide a detailed update on our current knowledge of ergot on cereals, with a focus on recent advances in our understanding of fungal toxins and their regulation, pathogen biology and disease management. The Journal of Food Science has released a Special Issue on sorghum, emphasizing its potential as a versatile and resilient grain that can contribute to global food security. The issue includes two papers that examine the health benefits of sorghum, discussing its effects on cancer, cardiovascular health, and diabetes. Both papers emphasize the need for further research to fully comprehend the health effects of sorghum and develop innovative sorghum food products. The issue also covers various other topics, such as reducing capsaicin oral burn, browning inhibitors for fresh-cut apples, and the safety assessment of chicken bile as a novel food. Additionally, the issue explores the use of in-package cold atmospheric plasma processing for fresh fish, reliable identification of morels, the kinetics of chemical and color changes in wheat during cooking, glycosylation modification of soy protein isolate, ozone treatment of harvested cantaloupes, and mitigating the food safety concerns of cultured meat production. Sorghum is an important C4 crop with various food and nonfood uses. Although improvements through hybridization and selection have been exploited, the introduction of genetic variation and the development of new genotypes in sorghum are still limited. Fast-neutron (FN) mutagenesis is a very effective method for gene functional studies and to create genetic variability. However, the full spectrum of FN-induced mutations in sorghum is poorly understood. To address this, we generated an FN-induced mutant population from the inbred line 'BTx623' and sequenced 40 M1 seedlings to evaluate the mutagenic effects of FNs on sorghum. The results show that each line had an average of 43.7 single-base substitutions (SBSs), 3.7 InDels and 35.15 structural variations (SVs). SBSs accounted for approximately 90.0% of the total number of small mutations. Among the eight treatment groups, FN irradiation at a dose of 19 Gy generated the highest number of mutations. The ratio of transition/transversion ranged from 1.77 to 2.21, and the G/C to A/T transition was the most common substitution in all mutant lines. The distributions of the identified SBSs and InDels were similar and uneven across the genome. An average of 3.63 genes were mutated in each mutant line, indicating that FN irradiation resulted in a suitable density of mutated genes, which can be advantageous for improving elite material for one specific or a few traits.
