Abstract

The problem of ferroconvection in a viscoelastic fluid layer is studied with the aim to investigate oscillatory motions. In this article, a stability analysis for both linear and nonlinear systems is carried out. In the linear stability analysis, the expressions for steady and oscillatory Rayleigh numbers are obtained and the effects of magnetic as well as viscoelastic parameters on the onset of viscoelastic ferromagnetic convection are investigated numerically. From the analysis, we found that the magnetic number (M1), the stress relaxation time (λ1) and the nonlinearity of magnetization (M3) have destabilizing influences on the onset of ferroconvection, whereas the strain retardation time (λ2) has stabilizing influence. In the weakly nonlinear stability analysis, the formula for heat transfer rate in terms of the Nusselt number is derived for oscillatory convection. From the analyses, we found that for increasing values of the magnetic number, stress relaxation time and nonlinearity of magnetization, the heat transfer rate rises, whereas it decreases for larger values of the strain retardation time. Moreover, the pitchfork bifurcation analysis yields that in order to reach the stable positions, the value of amplitude increases as the stress relaxation time increases, whereas a reverse trend is observed for the strain retardation time.

Abstract

Millets gained a great attention at the global level in 2023 which is celebrated as the "International Year of Millets" to create awareness to eventually promote consumption and production. An attempt is made here to understand the cultivation and production dynamics of millets as influenced by their demand and supply. We also assess challenges and emerging opportunities to make millets more productive, competitive, and relevant to future farming. Millets registered a 60% decline in area and a 200% rise in productivity, but production has remained the same during the last seven decades. The demand of millets decreased as food due to greater incentives (purchasing grain at a pre‐determined price) and policies (distribution of grains to the public at a subsidized rate) in favor of wheat and rice. Millets would play a greater role in future agriculture due to challenges posed by climate change, limited water supply, and reduced agro‐biodiversity. This would need a much greater intensity of investment in millet research and adequate support as extended to wheat and rice. Increased emphasis on their genetic improvement and agronomic management is required to develop cultivars, using new tools and technologies, with high production potential and adequate environmental adaptation to make millets competitive with other crops. Mainstreaming the nutritional traits in millet breeding is also critically important to develop high‐yielding cultivars with improved grain quality traits. Promoting millet consumption would remain the key issue for increasing their demand as food, feed, and industrial raw materials through policies and awareness programs. Strengthening of value chain will help in diversifying agri‐food production system and creating an ecosystem for millet promotion. 15. Seroprevalence of Transfusion Transmissible Infections Among Voluntary Blood Donors at an Indian Hospital

Abstract

Background: The knowledge of the incidence of blood Transfusion Transmissible Infections (TTIs) such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection, malaria and syphilis is essential for monitoring the safety of blood supply. Objective: To describe the prevalence of TTIs for monitoring blood supply safety and evaluating the efficacy of screening procedures. Methods: A five-year retrospective study spanning January 2016 to December 2020 was carried out on voluntary blood donors at blood donation camps organised by Adesh Medical College and Hospital, Kurukshetra, Haryana, India, and from donors at the hospital’s blood bank. The donated blood was tested for Hepatitis-B, Hepatitis-C, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), malaria and syphilis. Results: There were a total of 10,468 voluntary blood donors during the period of study. Out of all the donors, 0.4% tested positive for at least one of the TTIs, including 0.06% testing positive for HIV, 0.21% for Hepatitis-B virus (HBV) infection (Hepatitis-B Surface Antigen) and 0.13% for Hepatitis-C virus (HCV) infection (Anti HCV Antibodies). None of the voluntary donors was positive for malaria or syphilis. There were no co-infections. Conclusions: The prevalence of TTIs among voluntary blood donors was low hence the advocation for blood from this group of donors. Donated blood specimens should be more effectively screened, and blood should be rationally used.

16. Perception of Preclinical Medical Students About Pathology Subject and the Teaching Methods in an Indian Medical College

Abstract

Background: Pathology is a key subject at the pre-clinical stage of medical training. Objectives: To determine the perception of second-year MBBS (preclinical) students regarding Pathology as a subject and the effectiveness of various teaching, learning and assessment methods. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 145 randomly selected, second-year MBBS students, appearing for their Phase II final university exams. A predesigned questionnaire with questions about students’ perception of pathology was administered to the students. The questionnaire also assessed the various teaching-learning methods currently used by the faculty. The students were also requested to make suggestions regarding the modifications needed in the teaching methods. Results: A total of 145 out of 150 regular-batch students participated in the study. One hundred (68.9%) regarded pathology as an interesting subject; 131 (90.3%) felt pathology acts as a bridge between paraclinical and clinical branches while 107 (73.8%) found blackboard teaching more effective. Conclusion: The study revealed that the preclinical medical students showed a favourable predisposition towards pathology as a subject while highlighting areas that need to be addressed for more effective teaching and improved learning towards producing better medical professionals.

Abstract

Background: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common clinical manifestation of a perturbed vaginal ecology associated with adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes if left untreated. The existing diagnostic modalities are either cumbersome or require skilled expertise, warranting alternate tests. Application of machine‐learning tools to heterogeneous and high‐dimensional multi‐omics datasets finds promising potential in data integration and may aid biomarker discovery. Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of the microbiome and metabolome‐derived biomarkers in BV diagnosis. Interpretable machine‐learning algorithms were used to evaluate the utility of an integrated‐omics‐derived classification model. Methods: Vaginal samples obtained from reproductive‐age group women with (n = 40) and without BV (n = 40) were subjected to 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and LC–MS‐based metabolomics. The vaginal microbiome and metabolome were characterized, and machine‐learning analysis was performed to build a classification model using biomarkers with the highest diagnostic accuracy. Results: Microbiome‐based diagnostic model exhibited a ROC‐AUC (10‐fold CV) of 0.84 ± 0.21 and accuracy of 0.79 ± 0.18, and important features were Aerococcus spp., Mycoplasma hominis, Sneathia spp., Lactobacillus spp., Prevotella spp., Gardnerella spp. and Fannyhessea vaginae. The metabolome‐derived model displayed superior performance with a ROC‐AUC of 0.97 ± 0.07 and an accuracy of 0.92 ± 0.08. Beta‐leucine, methylimidazole acetaldehyde, dimethylethanolamine, L‐arginine and beta cortol were among key predictive metabolites for BV. A predictive model combining both microbial and metabolite features exhibited a high ROC‐AUC of 0.97 ± 0.07 and accuracy of 0.94 ± 0.08 with diagnostic performance only slightly superior to the metabolite‐based model. Conclusion: Application of machine‐learning tools to multi‐omics datasets aid biomarker discovery with high predictive performance. Metabolome‐derived classification models were observed to have superior diagnostic performance in predicting BV than microbiome‐based biomarkers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Utilising big data sources and artificial intelligence (AI) tools with marketing activities and analysis contrast with questionnaires and small n observations, essentially creating a renaissance in marketing education. As a result, marketing education keeps pace with AI developments and ensures learners (or students) prepare for the demands of the modern marketing landscape 2025-30. The authors advocate a central focus on a big data-driven marketing curriculum for marketing education. Such a curriculum places AI and machine learning center stage to help understand, analyze and utilize large and complex marketing datasets for predictive marketing. In doing so, the potential exists for practitioners to link marketing strategy directly with marketing execution, allowing learners to use big data and AI for upstream strategy design and marketing plan development while downstream predicting the results of marketing campaigns, programs, and initiatives But necessary changes in pedagogy are creating adaptive learning experiences breaking free from traditional assessments In our model of learning educators enable the development of practical marketing expertise using the techniques and tools of micro-testing to nudge learners using Python data science notebooks. Overall, a renaissance in marketing education is made possible with a focus on a big data AI tools-driven curriculum. Abstract

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is predominantly managed by lifestyle intervention, in the absence of effective pharmacotherapies. Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is the recommended diet, albeit with limited evidence. Aims: To compare an ad libitum MedDiet to low-fat diet (LFD) in patients with NAFLD for reducing intrahepatic lipids (IHL) by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Secondary outcomes include insulin resistance by homeostatic model of assessment (HOMA-IR), visceral fat by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and other metabolic outcomes. Methods: In this parallel multicentre RCT, subjects were randomised (1:1) to MedDiet or LFD for 12 weeks. Results: Forty-two participants (25 females [60%], mean age 52.3 ± 12.6 years) were included, 23 randomised to LFD and 19 to MedDiet.; 39 completed the study. Following 12 weeks, there were no between-group differences. IHL improved significantly within the LFD group (−17% [log scale]; p =.02) but not within the MedDiet group (−8%, p =.069). Abstract

Infections are a key source of stress to the hematopoietic system. While infections consume short-lived innate immune cells, their recovery depends on quiescent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) with long-term self-renewal capacity. Both chronic inflammatory stress and bacterial infections compromise competitive HSC capacity and cause bone marrow failure. However, our understanding of how HSCs act during acute and contained infections remains incomplete. Here, we used advanced chimeric and genetic mouse models in combination with pharmacological interventions to dissect the complex nature of the acute systemic response of HSCs to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a well-established model for inducing inflammatory stress. Acute LPS challenge transiently induced proliferation of quiescent HSCs in vivo. This response was not only mediated via direct LPS-TLR4 conjugation on HSCs, but also involved indirect TLR4 signaling in CD115+ monocytic cells, inducing a complex pro-inflammatory cytokine cascade in the bone marrow. Downstream of LPS-TLR4 signaling, the combined action of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IFNα, IFNγ, TNFα, IL-1α, IL-1β and many others is required to mediate full HSC activation in vivo. Together, our study reveals detailed mechanistic insights into the interplay of proinflammatory cytokine-induced molecular pathways and cell types that jointly orchestrate the complex process of emergency hematopoiesis and HSC activation upon LPS exposure in vivo.
