The paper presents the production of thermoplastic starch (TPS) mixtures using potato starch and two types of plasticizers: glycerol and sorbitol. The effects of plasticizers, citric acid, organically modified montmorillonite clay nanofiller (OMMT) and an additive based on ultrahigh molecular weight siloxane polymer on the structure and physical–mechanical and thermal properties of TPS samples were analysed. Starch mixtures plasticized with glycerol were obtained, where the starch/glycerol mass ratio was 70:30, as well as starch mixtures plasticized with glycerol and sorbitol, with a starch/glycerol/sorbitol mass ratio of 60:20:20. The starch gelatinization process to obtain TPS was carried out in a Brabender Plasti-Corder internal mixer at 120 °C, with a mixing speed of 30–80 rpm, for 10 min. The obtained results indicate that by adding 2% (weight percentage) of citric acid to the TPS mixtures, there is an improvement in the physical–mechanical properties, as well as structural changes that can indicate both cross-linking reactions by esterification in stages and depolymerisation reactions. The sample of TPS plasticized with glycerol, which contains OMMT, shows an increase in tensile strength by 34.4%, compared to the control sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the obtaining and characterization of blends based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and plasticized starch. In addition to plasticized starch (28.8% w/w), the compositions made also contained other ingredients, such as polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride as a compatibilizer, ethylene propylene terpolymer elastomer, cross-linking agents, and nanoclay. Plasticized starch contains 68.6% w/w potato starch, 29.4% w/w glycerin, and 2% w/w anhydrous citric acid. Blends based on HDPE and plasticized starch were made in a Brabender Plasti-Corder internal mixer at 160 °C, and plates for testing were obtained using the compression method. Thermal analyses indicate an increase in the crystallization degree of the HDPE after the addition of plasticized starch. SEM micrographs indicate that blends are compatibilized, with the plasticized starch being well dispersed as droplets in the HDPE matrix. Samples show high hardness values (62–65° ShD), good tensile strength values (14.88–17.02 N/mm2), and Charpy impact strength values (1.08–2.27 kJ/m2 on notched samples, and 7.96–20.29 kJ/m2 on unnotched samples). After 72 h of water immersion at room temperature, mixtures containing a compatibilizer had a mass variation below 1% and water absorption values below 1.7%. Upon increasing the water immersion temperature to 80 °C, the sample without the compatibilizer showed a mass reduction of −2.23%, indicating the dissolution of the plasticized starch in the water. The samples containing the compatibilizer had a mass variation of max 8.33% and a water absorption of max 5.02%. After toluene immersion for 72 h at room temperature, mass variation was below 8%. Given the constant increased number of nosocomial infections in hospitals, especially associated with prolonged usage of inserted medical devices, our work aims to ameliorate clinical experience and promote faster healing of patients undergoing urinary catheterization by improving the properties of medical devices materials. Within this research, nine different composites were prepared based on polyvinyl chloride, using three different plasticizers (di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, Proviplast 2646, and Proviplast 2755), and two different antimicrobial additives containing silver nanoparticles. The prepared materials were analyzed, and their physicochemical properties were determined: water absorption, relative density, plasticizer migration, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity by contact angle measurement, Shore A hardness, tensile strength, and elongation at break. Structure and morphology were also investigated by means of FTIR, SEM, and EDX analyses, and thermal (TG-DSC) and biological properties were evaluated. The most important aspects of obtained results are showing that plasticizer migration was significantly reduced (to almost zero) and that the usage of antimicrobial additives improved the materials' biocompatibility. Thus, based on the concluded favorable properties, the obtained materials can be further used for catheter development. This paper describes the development of new types of dynamically cross-linked thermoplastic elastomers based on ethylene-propylene-terpolymer rubber and low-density polyethylene, reinforced with plasticized starch and montmorillonite with a chemically modified surface. An octylphenolformaldehyde resin in the presence of stannous chloride dihydrate was used as a vulcanizing agent. The samples were obtained on a Brabender Plasti-Corder mixer, at appropriate temperatures and rotation speeds, using the dynamic vulcanization method and the melt intercalation technique. The mixtures obtained were modeled in the form of plates with standard dimensions using specific molds and a laboratory-scale electrical press. The obtained samples were analyzed from the point of view of the physical-mechanical properties, the melt flow index, as well as from the structural and morphological point of view. It was observed that the characteristics of the samples are influenced by both the composition and the methods of obtaining used. According to the obtained characteristics, the new elasto-plastic materials can be used in fields such as the footwear industry (for the production of: soles, heels, protective boots), in the rubber and plastics industry, the automobile industry, agriculture or construction (when making gaskets, technical items, hoses, etc.). This paper presents the development, characterization, and testing of PP/PE-g-MA composites with 10 and 15 wt% surface-modified aramid fibers, and aluminum-based pigment, as covers for a small drone body for collision protection. The successful fiber surface modification with SiO2 by the sol–gel method using TEOS was confirmed by FTIR, SEM, and EDS analyses. The composites were characterized by FTIR and SEM analyses and surface energy and water contact angle measurements and tested in terms of tensile, flexural, impact, and thermal properties. The materials exhibited hydrophobic character and compact and uniform morphostructures, with increased surface energy with fiber content owed to improved adhesion between modified fibers and the matrix. Compared to the control sample, composites with modified fibers showed an increase by 20% in tensile strength, and 36–52% in the modulus, and an increase by 26–33% in flexural strength and 30–47% in the modulus, with higher values at room temperature. Impact resistance of modified fiber composites showed an increase by 20–40% compared to the control sample, due to improved interaction between SiO2-modified fibers and maleic anhydride, which inhibits crack formation, allowing higher energies' absorption. The composites were vacuum-thermoformed on 3D-printed molds as a two-part cover for the body of a drone, successfully withstanding the flight test. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a study on composites based on 50:50 (PP:LLPE‐g‐MA) reinforced with 0.5, 1, and 2 wt% aramid fibers unmodified/modified with TiO2, processed by melt compounding. Micronic aramid fibers were acetone washed to remove impurities and treated with Ti(IV)isopropoxide precursor via sol–gel method, adding microcellulose for TiO2 particle dimension control. Composites were hot‐pressed into 4 mm‐thick plates for sampling and 0.5 mm‐thick sheets for thermoforming. All composites were successfully thermoformed, fibers‐based samples showing improved thermoforming ability without wrinkling. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis confirmed the formation of TiO2 particles on the fiber surface. Optical microscopy, SEM and FTIR analysis exhibit the fibers' strong embedment into the matrix due to physical interlocking, generating surface defect reduction. Water absorption decreased from 0.195% (control) to 0.075 and 0% for 1 TiO2 and 2 TiO2 samples, due to material compactization. Contact angles increased from 95.18° (Control) to 108° (1 TiO2) and 112.89° (2 TiO2). The highest flexural strength and modulus were exhibited by 1 TiO2 sample that increased by 44.88% and 47.6% compared to the control sample, due to higher intrinsic rigidity of fibers and TiO2 modifying surface rugosity and phase interaction. The impact strength of the control sample improved by 139% compared to PP due to brittleness reduction, 1 TiO2 by 209% compared to PP, 29% compared to the control sample. The results and excellent thermoformability recommend the materials for encapsulation of electronic/expensive parts in automotive or drone applications, offering viable, facile, rapid, and cost‐effective solutions to easily replace damaged parts. Food safety and quality are major concerns in the food industry. Despite numerous studies, polyethylene remains one of the most used materials for packaging due to industry reluctance to invest in new technologies and equipment. Therefore, modifications to the current materials are easier to implement than adopting whole new solutions. Antibacterial activity can be induced in low-density polyethylene films only by adding antimicrobial agents. ZnO nanoparticles are well known for their strong antimicrobial activity, coupled with low toxicity and UV shielding capability. These characteristics recommend ZnO for the food industry. By incorporating such safe and dependable antimicrobial agents in the polyethylene matrix, we have obtained composite films able to inhibit microorganisms' growth that can be used as packaging materials. Here we report the obtaining of highly homogenous composite films with up to 5% ZnO by a melt mixing process at 150 °C for 10 min. The composite films present good transparency in the visible domain, permitting consumers to visualize the food, but have good UV barrier properties. The composite films exhibit good antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity from the lowest ZnO composition (1%), against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The homogenous dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles into the polyethylene matrix was assessed by Fourier transform infrared microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The optimal mechanical barrier properties were obtained for composition with 3% ZnO. The thermal analysis indicates that the addition of ZnO nanoparticles has increased thermal stability by more than 100 °C. The UV-Vis spectra indicate a low transmittance in the UV domain, lower than 5%, making the films suitable for blocking photo-oxidation processes. Significant interest is devoted to the development of new polymer blends by using concepts of the circular economy. Such materials have predetermined properties, are easy to recycle, ecological, and have a low carbon footprint. This research presents obtaining and characterization of polymer blends based on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and thermoplastic starch (TPS). In the first stage, TPS was obtained through the gelatinization process, and, in the second stage, mixtures of LDPE and TPS were obtained through a melt mixing process at 150 °C for 7 min. The physical–mechanical characteristics of the samples, like hardness, elongation at break, rebound resilience, and tensile strength, were determined. The sample containing maleic anhydride grafted low-density polyethylene (LDPE-g-MA) as a compatibilizer shows improvements in elongation at break and tensile strength (by 6.59% and 40.47%, respectively) compared to the test sample. The FTIR microscopy maps show that samples containing LDPE-g-MA are more homogeneous. The SEM micrographs indicate that TPS-s is homogeneously dispersed as droplets in the LDPE matrix. From the thermal analysis, it was observed that both the degree of crystallinity and the mass loss at high temperature are influenced by the composition of the samples. This work deals with the development and characterization of biodegradable polymer composites based on of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and wood waste (WW) postconsumer waste. Wood waste resulting from wood processing into finished products is cryogenically ground to min. 500 nm, mechanically functionalized at temperature with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) (7%) and compounded in varying proportions (10%, 20%, 50%). The new composite is biodegradable due to the compounding with wood fibers, have low density and implicitly the products made from, a lower weight, reduced costs and recover waste.
