Abstract

International audience; Holographic and near-field ptychographic X-ray computed tomography techniques have been compared by characterizing a typical solid oxide cell hydrogen electrode using a high-energy X-ray beam. The main advantages and drawbacks of both methods are discussed regarding the possibility to image the Ni-YSZ cermet, a complex porous electrode microstructure composed of X-ray absorbent materials. The same innovative sub-pixel alignment algorithm, based on tomographic consistency, was applied to align the different tomographic projections for each technique. It has been shown that a better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is obtained using nearfield ptychographic tomography, whereas holographic tomography can be faster with similar spatial resolution. Moreover, quantitative electron density maps have been obtained with the two techniques. The quality of the phase identification has also been assessed and compared in both cases using a classical grey-level class separability criterion. After the segmentation, a set of typical microstructural properties describing the electrode morphology was computed. The comparison of the results allowed validating the complementarity of the two Xray imaging techniques. Despite the more time-consuming data acquisition and processing than holographic tomography, near-field ptychographic tomography is especially well adapted to image samples without any insight on their composition or when the sample is highly absorbent. Yet, holographic X-ray tomography, using high-energy X-rays to reduce the sample absorption, remains a faster 3D imaging technique with spatial resolution and contrast sensitivity sufficient for the characterization of solid oxide cell materials.

Abstract

International audience; Experiments have been performed in pressurized co-electrolysis mode at 800 °C on a typical Ni-YSZ//YSZ//CGO-LSCF cell. The polarization curves and the composition of the produced syngas have been measured at 1 bar and 10 bar. It has been found that the cell performances are improved under pressure at 1.3 V. The gas analyses have revealed that the methane formation is only activated under polarization and pressure. These experimental results have been used to validate a model which encompasses a chemical and electrochemical description of the co-electrolyser combined with a mass transport module. It has been found that the model is able to predict accurately the polarization curves as well as the syngas compositions at the cell outlet. Once validated, the model has been used to analyze the operating mechanisms in pressurized co-electrolysis. The impact of pressure on the mass transfer, the electrochemical and chemical reactions has been discussed. The close interaction between the electrochemical and chemical reactions for the internal production of CH4 has been specifically highlighted. Finally, operating maps have been computed at 10 bar from 700 °C to 800 °C. These simulations have shown that formation of CH4 in the co-electrolyser remains limited at 700 °C.

3. Large Area Deposition by Radio Frequency Sputtering of Gd 0.1 Ce 0.9 O 1.95 Buffer Layers in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Structural, Morphological and Electrochemical Investigation.

Abstract

We investigate the influence of position, under large circular sputtering targets, on the final electrochemical performance of 35 mm diameter button solid oxide fuel cells with sputter-deposited Gadolinium doped Ceria barrier layers, positioned in order to almost cover the entirety of the area associated with a 120 × 80 mm 2 industrial cell. We compare the results obtained via structural and morphological analysis to the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements performed on the button cells, disentangling the role of different parameters. The Atomic Force Microscopy analysis makes it possible to observe a decrease in the roughness values from the peripheral to the central zones under the sputtering target, with peak-to-valley roughness values, respectively, decreasing from 380 nm to 300 nm, while Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy show a dependence of the layer coverage from the position. The electrochemical performances of button cells with buffer layers of only 200 nm in thickness, and with negligible thickness gradients across them, show current density values of up to 478 mA/cm 2 at 0.8 V and 650 °C, with an improvement of more than 67% with respect to button cells with standard (screen printed) buffer layers. These results point out the major influence exerted by parameters such as the thickness gradient and the coverage of the sputtered buffer layers in determining the final electrochemical performances.
