Abstract

Objective The study aimed to evaluate the top large language models (LLMs) in validated medical knowledge tests in Portuguese.Methods This study compared 31 LLMs in the context of solving the national Brazilian medical examination test. The research compared the performance of 23 open-source and 8 proprietary models across 399 multiple-choice questions.Results Among the smaller models, Llama 3 8B exhibited the highest success rate, achieving 53.9%, while the medium-sized model Mixtral 8×7B attained a success rate of 63.7%. Conversely, larger models like Llama 3 70B achieved a success rate of 77.5%. Among the proprietary models, GPT-4o and Claude Opus demonstrated superior accuracy, scoring 86.8% and 83.8%, respectively.Conclusions 10 out of the 31 LLMs attained better than human level of performance in the Revalida benchmark, with 9 failing to provide coherent answers to the task. Larger models exhibited superior performance overall. However, certain medium-sized LLMs surpassed the performance of some of the larger LLMs.

2. Language Learning Materials Counteracting Rural Racializations: A Practical Attempt in ELT

Abstract

Colombia is one of the most socioeconomically unequal countries worldwide, with rural regions facing severe poverty, under-resourced schools, precarious economic opportunities, and an unresolved armed conflict. These inequalities are often overlooked in ELT policies and social practices, as rural institutions and educational actors are expected to adhere to English teaching goals that are more aligned with an urban ideal. This misrecognition of the rural socioeconomic and cultural conditions, along with historical racial intersections from colonization, contribute to emerging forms of racialization. Drawing on our research to explore the linkages between L2 education and race, this article examines the racialization of rurality from an ELT angle and introduces a didactic proposal to foster critical consciousness and enact deracialization.

Abstract

La economía mundial en la segunda década de siglo XXI, está enfrentando una situación crítica que nos lleva a replantearnos la dinámica de las relaciones económicas internacionales. Si revisamos la historia con especial atención, a los inicios de la década de los ochenta del siglo XX, comenzaban la construcción de los cimientos de lo que se denomina neoconservadurismo. Este permitió un gran impulso al proceso de globalización, a la desregulación de los mercados y la apertura de las economías y de la mano de los “ajustes estructurales” impuestos por los organismos financieros internacionales, características que dieron forma a la economía de finales del siglo pasado. Por ello, este artículo busca describir las relaciones entre China y Estados Unidos en el marco de lo que se ha denominado la guerra comercial durante la administración de Trump y su correlación con los cambios en la lucha de poder. Para ello se utilizó el método descriptivo y descriptivo-explicativo que permitiera establecer las relaciones y correlaciones entre las variables en estudio. Además, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica, de fuentes primarias y principalmente secundarias para comprender el juego por la lucha de poder y protagonismo entre las potencias. Se buscó dimensionar el impacto de la guerra comercial entre China y Estados Unidos en la (re)estructuración y dinámica del Sistema Internacional. El enfrentamiento entre China y los EE. UU. no es producto de la casualidad, sino una lucha por protagonismo que al tratarse de las dos economías más grandes del mundo genera un enfrentamiento comercial que se transforma en problema de dimensiones globales.

Abstract

Secondary forests now dominate tropical landscapes and play a crucial role in achieving COP15 conservation objectives. This study develops a replicable national approach to identifying and characterising forest ecosystems, with a focus on the role of secondary forests. We hypothesised that dominant tree species in the forest canopy serve as reliable indicators for delineating forest ecosystems and untangling biodiversity complexity. Using national inventories, we identified in situ clusters through hierarchical clustering based on dominant species abundance dissimilarity, determined using the Importance Variable Index. These clusters were characterised by analysing species assemblages and their interactions. We then applied object-oriented Random Forest modelling, segmenting the national forest cover using NDVI to identify the forest ecosystems derived from in situ clusters. Freely available spectral (Sentinel-2) and environmental data were used in the model to delineate and characterise key forest ecosystems. We finished with an assessment of distribution of secondary and old-growth forests within ecosystems. In Costa Rica, 495 dominant tree species defined 10 in situ clusters, with 7 main clusters successfully modelled. The modelling (F1-score: 0.73, macro F1-score: 0.58) and species-based characterisation highlighted the main ecological trends of these ecosystems, which are distinguished by specific species dominance, topography, climate, and vegetation dynamics, aligning with local forest classifications. The analysis of secondary forest distribution provided an initial assessment of ecosystem vulnerability by evaluating their role in forest maintenance and dynamics. Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate that a digitized counterdiabatic quantum protocol reduces the number of topological defects created during a fast quench across a quantum phase transition. To show this, we perform quantum simulations of one- and two-dimensional transverse-field Ising models driven from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic phase. We utilize superconducting cloud-based quantum processors with up to 156 qubits. Our data reveal that the digitized counterdiabatic protocol reduces defect formation by up to 48% in the fast-quench regime -- an improvement hard to achieve through digitized quantum annealing under current noise levels. The experimental results closely match theoretical and numerical predictions at short evolution times, before deviating at longer times due to hardware noise. In one dimension, we derive an analytic solution for the defect number distribution in the fast-quench limit. For two-dimensional geometries, where analytical solutions are unknown and numerical simulations are challenging, we use advanced matrix-product-state methods. Abstract

The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries perform reconstruction of neutrino interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, which will operate four large-scale liquid argon time projection chambers at the far detector site in South Dakota, producing high-resolution images of charged particles emerging from neutrino interactions. While these high-resolution images provide excellent opportunities for physics, the complex topologies require sophisticated pattern recognition capabilities to interpret signals from the detectors as physically meaningful objects that form the inputs to physics analyses. A critical component is the identification of the neutrino interaction vertex. Subsequent reconstruction algorithms use this location to identify the individual primary particles and ensure they each result in a separate reconstructed particle. A new vertex-finding procedure described in this article integrates a U-ResNet neural network performing hit-level classification into the multi-algorithm approach used by Pandora to identify the neutrino interaction vertex. The machine learning solution is seamlessly integrated into a chain of pattern-recognition algorithms. The technique substantially outperforms the previous BDT-based solution, with a more than 20\% increase in the efficiency of sub-1\,cm vertex reconstruction across all neutrino flavours., Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

K-dwarf stars are promising targets in the exploration of potentially habitable planets. Their properties, falling between G and M dwarfs, provide an optimal trade-off between the prospect of habitability and ease of detection. The KOBE experiment is a blind-search survey exploiting this niche, monitoring the radial velocity of 50 late-type K-dwarf stars. It employs the CARMENES spectrograph, with an observational strategy designed to detect planets in the habitable zone of their system. In this work, we exploit the KOBE data set to characterize planetary signals in the K7V star HIP 5957 (KOBE-1) and to constrain the planetary population within its habitable zone. We used 82 CARMENES spectra over a time span of three years. We employed a GLS periodogram to search for significant periodic signals that would be compatible with Keplerian motion on KOBE-1. We carried out a model comparison within a Bayesian framework to ensure the significance of the planetary model over alternative configurations of lower complexity. We also inspected two available TESS sectors in search of planetary signals. We identified two signals: at 8.5d and 29.7d. We confirmed their planetary nature through ruling out other non-planetary configurations. Their minimum masses are 8.80+/-0.76ME and 12.4+/-1.1ME, corresponding to absolute masses within the planetary regime at a high certainty (>99.7%). By analyzing the sensitivity of the CARMENES time series to additional signals, we discarded planets above 8.5ME within the habitable zone. We identified a single transit-like feature in TESS, whose origin is still uncertain, but still compatible within 1sigma with a transit from planet c. We have explored future prospects for characterizing this system, concluding that nulling interferometry with the LIFE mission could be capable of directly imaging both planets and characterizing their atmospheres in future studies., Comment: 29 pages, 21 figures, 10 tables, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract

This paper presents results for the innermost stable circular orbit in a Kerr-like spacetime. The metric employed is an approximation that combines the Kerr metric with the Erez-Rosen metric, expanded in a Taylor series. Consequently, this spacetime incorporates three relativistic multipole moments: mass, spin, and quadrupole moment. Our derivation builds upon the analysis conducted by Chandrasekhar for the Kerr metric. Utilizing the Euler-Lagrange method and Hamiltonian dynamics, we define an effective potential for the radial coordinate. This equation can be used to measure the mass quadrupole through observational methods, as it yields a quadratic polynomial for the quadrupole moment. As anticipated, the limiting cases of this equation correspond to the established cases of Kerr and Schwarzschild spacetimes.

Abstract

Optical Emission Spectroscopy is a widely used technique for plasma diagnosis, with particular interest in hydrogen atomic emission due to its prevalence in plasmas. However, accurately determining plasma parameters like electron density, electron temperature, and gas temperature starting from the experimental profiles remains a challenge. This paper introduces a comprehensive model for Stark broadening of the H{\alpha} line in a wide range of plasma conditions, addressing the limitations of existing analytical expressions for line shapes. The proposed model encompasses the full splitting of the transition into fifteen Lorentzian profiles and electric micro-field fluctuations surrounding the emitting atoms due to collisions with charged particles. Starting from accurate spectral data obtained from realistic computer simulations, fitting parameters of the model, have been obtained by using an optimization method based on a genetic algorithm. The set of parameters of the model are reported for a wide range of plasma conditions. The behavior of these parameters is analyzed to understand their dependence in terms of the electron density and temperature and gas density of the plasma. The model parameters here obtained constitute a useful tool in plasma diagnosis to obtaining the values of the physical parameters of the plasma starting from the experimental profiles., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Recent advances have enabled the discovery of a population of potentially Earth-like planets, yet their orbital eccentricity, which governs their climate and provides clues about their origin and dynamical history, is still largely unconstrained. We identify a sample of 17 transiting exoplanets around late-type stars with similar radii and irradiation to that of Earth and use the "photoeccentric effect" - which exploits transit durations - to infer their eccentricity distribution via hierarchical Bayesian modelling. Our analysis establishes that these worlds further resemble Earth in that their eccentricities are nearly circular (mean eccentricity $=0.060_{-0.028}^{+0.040}$ and $\leq0.15$), with the exception of one outlier of moderate eccentricity. The results hint at a subset population of dynamically warmer Earths, but this requires a larger sample to statistically confirm. The planets in our sample are thus largely subject to minimal eccentricity-induced seasonal variability and are consistent with emerging via smooth disk migration rather than violent planet-planet scattering., Comment: To appear in Nature Astronomy

Abstract

The spectral structure of a photonic reservoir shapes radiation phenomena for embedded quantum emitters. We implement an all-optical analogue to study such an effect, particularly to observe the non-Markovian radiation dynamics of an emitter coupled to two-dimensional structured reservoirs. Its dynamics is simulated by light propagating through a photonic lattice, acting as a reservoir for an adjacent waveguide that mimics a coupled quantum emitter. We study radiation dynamics in square and Lieb lattices under different coupling regimes and observe how the flat band properties of the Lieb lattice significantly enhances light-matter coupling and non-Markovianity. Abstract

In Costa Rica, an average of 5 tons of seashells are extracted from ecosystems annually. Confiscated seashells, cannot be returned to their ecosystems due to the lack of origin recognition. To address this issue, we developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) specifically for seashell identification. We built a dataset from scratch, consisting of approximately 19000 images from the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Using this dataset, the model achieved a classification accuracy exceeding 85%. The model has been integrated into a user-friendly application, which has classified over 36,000 seashells to date, delivering real-time results within 3 seconds per image. To further enhance the system's accuracy, an anomaly detection mechanism was incorporated to filter out irrelevant or anomalous inputs, ensuring only valid seashell images are processed.

Abstract

Context. The detection of the He I 10830 A triplet in exoplanet atmospheres has opened a new window for probing planetary properties, including atmospheric escape. Unlike Lyman alpha, the triplet is less affected by ISM absorption. Sufficient XUV stellar irradiation may trigger the formation of the He I triplet via photoionization and posterior recombination processes in the planet atmospheres. Only a weak trend between stellar XUV and the planetary He I strength has been observed so far. Aims. We aim to confirm this mechanism for producing the He I absorption in exoplanetary atmospheres by examining a sample of planetary systems. Methods. We obtained homogeneous measurements of the planetary He I line EW and consistently computed the stellar XUV ionizing irradiation. We first derived new coronal models for the planet-host stars. We used updated data from the X-exoplanets database, archival X-ray spectra of M-type stars (including AU Mic and Proxima Cen), and new XMM-Newton X-ray data obtained for the CARMENES project. These data were complemented at longer wavelengths with publicly available HST, FUSE, and EUVE spectra. A total of 75 stars are carefully analyzed to obtain a new calibration between X-ray and EUV emission. Results. Two distinct relationships between stellar X-ray emission (5-100 A) and EUV_H (100-920 A) or EUV_He (100-504 A) radiation are obtained to scale the emission from late-type stellar coronae. A total of 48 systems with reported planetary He I 10830 A studies, exhibit a robust relationship between the planetary He I feature and the ionizing XUV_He received by the planet, corrected by stellar and planetary radii, and the planet's gravitational potential. Some outliers could be explained by a different atmospheric composition or the lack of planetary gaseous atmospheres. 14. Protracted Development in Child Heritage Spanish: Evidence from Inalienable Possession

Abstract

The present study examined the production of inalienable possession with body parts in Spanish among 20 school-age children of Mexican-born parents born and raised in the United States. The results were compared to those of 20 first-generation immigrant parents (main input providers), 27 Spanish-dominant children of similar age, and 12 Spanish monolingual parents living in Mexico. Group and individual results obtained via a question-and-answer task showed low proportion of clitic se plus the definite determiner (e.g. "Ella se rompió el brazo" 'She broke her arm') among the heritage children in their production of the inalienable construal. The heritage children significantly overextended the possessive determiner instead of the definite determiner in contrast to their parents, the Spanish-dominant children and monolingual parents. Results also showed a significant role for dominance and language experience in the degree of morphosyntactic variability among heritage children, supporting recent research. The higher the Spanish dominance and the more Spanish contact and use the heritage children had, the more they aligned closer to their parents and the Spanish-dominant children in the use of the definite determiner. There were no divergences with the use of the definite determiner in alienable contexts. We argue for protracted development in child heritage Spanish stemming from crosslinguistic influence effects, minority language dominance and linguistic experience.

15. Understanding Translations and Controversies in Contemporary Curriculum Reforms: A Colombian Case Study

Abstract

This paper analyzes the connection between a university's curricular reform and the creative ways in which actors position themselves to respond. The study takes place in a Colombian university that underwent an institutional competency-based curricular reform. This context allows us to question the ways in which different actors perceive and interpret the curriculum. Utilising curriculum enactment and policy enactment as analytical frameworks, this research distances itself from technical approaches that view reforms as merely a matter of implementing the official curriculum in a linear and technical manner. Instead, it examines the transformations and the ways in which actors such as students, faculty, and academic leaders experience, adapt to, and interpret the curriculum as a dynamic artefact. A comparative case-study underpinned the methodological approach to understand the challenges and singularities that emerged from curricula transformation in three different departments. Interviews, focus group, a class project carried out by students and document analysis, were used to understand the various forms of creative deviation and opposition displayed by actors towards technocratic discourses on innovation, evaluation, and accountability. Findings evidence that opposition to the curricular reform process came from a resistance to adhering to global discourses of competency-based education. However, findings also show that there is a misalignment between the decision-making process of the curricular reform and the demands of the job market. Therefore, any curricular reform should be critically examined from multiple perspectives rather than solely through a technical lens.

We compare the constraints obtained from parameter compression methods to the direct fitting (Full-Modeling) approaches of modeling the galaxy power spectra, and show that the ShapeFit extension to the traditional template method is consistent with the Full-Modeling method within the standard ΛCDM parameter space. We show the dependence on scale cuts when fitting the different redshift bins using the ShapeFit and Full-Modeling methods. We test the ability to jointly fit data from multiple redshift bins as well as joint analysis of the pre-reconstruction power spectrum with the post-reconstruction BAO correlation function signal. We further demonstrate the behavior of the model when opening up the parameter space beyond ΛCDM and also when combining likelihoods with external datasets, namely the Planck CMB priors. Finally, we describe different parametrization options for the galaxy bias, counterterm, and stochastic parameters, and employ the halo model in order to physically motivate suitable priors that are necessary to ensure the stability of the perturbation theory.

Abstract

Abstract: In preparation for the next generation of galaxy redshift surveys, and in particular the year-one data release from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), we investigate the consistency of a variety of effective field theory models that describe the galaxy-galaxy power spectra in redshift space into the quasi-linear regime using 1-loop perturbation theory. These models are employed in the pipelines velocileptors, PyBird, and Folpsν . While these models have been validated independently, a detailed comparison with consistent choices has not been attempted. After briefly discussing the theoretical differences between the models we describe how to provide a more apples-to-apples comparison between them. We present the results of fitting mock spectra from the AbacusSummit suite of N-body simulations provided in three redshift bins to mimic the types of dark time tracers targeted by the DESI survey. We show that the theories behave similarly and give consistent constraints in both the forward-modeling and ShapeFit compressed fitting approaches. We additionally generate (noiseless) synthetic data from each pipeline to be fit by the others, varying the scale cuts in order to show that the models agree within the range of scales for which we expect 1-loop perturbation theory to be applicable. This work lays the foundation of Full-Shape analysis with DESI Y1 galaxy samples where in the tests we performed, we found no systematic error associated with the modeling of the galaxy redshift space power spectrum for this volume.

Abstract

An electric current flowing in a ferromagnetic metal carries spin angular momentum, i.e. it is spin-polarized. Here, we measure the spin-wave Doppler shift induced by the transfer of angular momentum from the diffusive spin-polarized electric current onto coherent spin waves in epitaxial MgO/Fe/MgO thin films. We follow this Doppler shift as function of the temperature and determine that the degree of spin-polarization of the current increases from 77$\%$ to 86$\%$ when cooling the device from 303K down to 10K. Interpreting these measurements within the two-current model, we separate the contributions from electron-surface, electron-phonon and electron-magnon scatterings to the spin-dependent resistivity of Fe.

19. Nanofiber-based second-order atomic Bragg lattice for collectively enhanced coupling

Abstract

We propose two experimental schemes for nanofiber-based compensated optical dipole traps that optimize the collective coupling of a one-dimensional array of atoms. The created array satisfies the second-order Bragg condition ($d=\lambda$), facilitating constructive interference of atomic radiation into the nanofiber and generating coherent back reflections of guided modes. Both schemes use far-off resonance light to minimize light scattering and atomic heating. Our numerical study focuses on $^{87}$Rb atoms. 20. Effect of three-orifice baffles orientation on the flow and thermal-hydraulic performance: experimental analysis for net and oscillatory flows

Abstract

Three-orifice baffles equally spaced along a circular tube are investigated as a means for heat transfer enhancement under net, oscillatory and compound flows. An unprecedented, systematic analysis of the relative orientation of consecutive baffles -- aligned or opposed -- is accomplished to assess the changes induced on the flow structure and their impact on the thermal-hydraulic performance. The results cover the Nusselt number, the net and oscillatory friction factors and the instantaneous velocity fields using PIV in an experimental campaign with a 32 mm tube diameter. The study is conducted in the range of net Reynolds numbers $50 < Re_n < 1000$ and oscillatory Reynolds numbers $0 < Re_{osc}< 750$, for a dimensionless amplitude $x_0/D = 0.5$ and $Pr=65$. In absence of oscillatory flow, opposed baffles advance the transition to turbulence from $Re_n = 100$ to $50$, increasing the net friction factor (40 %) for $Re_n > 50$ and the Nusselt number (maximum of 27 %) for $Re_n < 150$. When an oscillatory flow is applied, augmentations caused by opposed baffles are only observed for $Re_n < 150$ and $Re_{osc} < 150$. Above $Re_n$, $Re_{osc}>150$, opposed baffles are not recommended for the promotion of heat transfer, owing to friction penalties. However, the chaotic mixing and lack of short-circuiting between baffles observed with flow velocimetry over a wide range of operational conditions point out the interest of this configuration to achieve plug flow., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

We present a deep-learning Variational Encoder-Decoder (VED) framework for learning data-driven low-dimensional representations of the relationship between high-dimensional parameters of a physical system and the system's high-dimensional observable response. The framework consists of two deep learning-based probabilistic transformations: An encoder mapping parameters to latent codes and a decoder mapping latent codes to the observable response. The hyperparameters of these transformations are identified by maximizing a variational lower bound on the log-conditional distribution of the observable response given parameters. To promote the disentanglement of latent codes, we equip this variational loss with a penalty on the off-diagonal entries of the aggregate distribution covariance of codes. This regularization penalty encourages the pushforward of a standard Gaussian distribution of latent codes to approximate the marginal distribution of the observable response. Using the proposed framework we successfully model the hydraulic pressure response at observation wells of a groundwater flow model as a function of its discrete log-hydraulic transmissivity field. Compared to the canonical correlation analysis encoding, the VED model achieves a lower-dimensional latent representation, with as low as $r = 50$ latent dimensions without a significant loss of reconstruction accuracy. We explore the impact of regularization on model performance, finding that KL-divergence and covariance regularization improve feature disentanglement in latent space while maintaining reconstruction accuracy. Furthermore, we evaluate the generative capabilities of the regularized model by decoding random Gaussian noise, revealing that tuning both $\beta$ and $\lambda$ parameters enhances the quality of the generated observable response data.

22. Solving High-dimensional Inverse Problems Using Amortized Likelihood-free Inference with Noisy and Incomplete Data

Abstract

We present a likelihood-free probabilistic inversion method based on normalizing flows for high-dimensional inverse problems. The proposed method is composed of two complementary networks: a summary network for data compression and an inference network for parameter estimation. The summary network encodes raw observations into a fixed-size vector of summary features, while the inference network generates samples of the approximate posterior distribution of the model parameters based on these summary features. The posterior samples are produced in a deep generative fashion by sampling from a latent Gaussian distribution and passing these samples through an invertible transformation. We construct this invertible transformation by sequentially alternating conditional invertible neural network and conditional neural spline flow layers. The summary and inference networks are trained simultaneously. We apply the proposed method to an inversion problem in groundwater hydrology to estimate the posterior distribution of the log-conductivity field conditioned on spatially sparse time-series observations of the system's hydraulic head responses.The conductivity field is represented with 706 degrees of freedom in the considered problem.The comparison with the likelihood-based iterative ensemble smoother PEST-IES method demonstrates that the proposed method accurately estimates the parameter posterior distribution and the observations' predictive posterior distribution at a fraction of the inference time of PEST-IES.

Abstract

We present cosmological results from the measurement of clustering of galaxy, quasar and Lyman-$\alpha$ forest tracers from the first year of observations with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI Data Release 1). We adopt the full-shape (FS) modeling of the power spectrum, including the effects of redshift-space distortions, in an analysis which has been validated in a series of supporting papers. In the flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmological model, DESI (FS+BAO), combined with a baryon density prior from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and a weak prior on the scalar spectral index, determines matter density to $\Omega_\mathrm{m}=0.2962\pm 0.0095$, and the amplitude of mass fluctuations to $\sigma_8=0.842\pm 0.034$. The addition of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data tightens these constraints to $\Omega_\mathrm{m}=0.3056\pm 0.0049$ and $\sigma_8=0.8121\pm 0.0053$, while further addition of the the joint clustering and lensing analysis from the Dark Energy Survey Year-3 (DESY3) data leads to a 0.4% determination of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = (68.40\pm 0.27)\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$. In models with a time-varying dark energy equation of state, combinations of DESI (FS+BAO) with CMB and type Ia supernovae continue to show the preference, previously found in the DESI DR1 BAO analysis, for $w_0>-1$ and $w_a<0$ with similar levels of significance. DESI data, in combination with the CMB, impose the upper limits on the sum of the neutrino masses of $\sum m_\nu < 0.071\,{\rm eV}$ at 95% confidence. DESI data alone measure the modified-gravity parameter that controls the clustering of massive particles, $\mu_0=0.11^{+0.45}_{-0.54}$, while the combination of DESI with the CMB and the clustering and lensing analysis from DESY3 constrains both modified-gravity parameters, giving $\mu_0 = 0.04\pm 0.22$ and $\Sigma_0 = 0.044\pm 0.047$, in agreement with general relativity. Abstract

We present the samples of galaxies and quasars used for DESI 2024 cosmological analyses, drawn from the DESI Data Release 1 (DR1). We describe the construction of large-scale structure (LSS) catalogs from these samples, which include matched sets of synthetic reference `randoms' and weights that account for variations in the observed density of the samples due to experimental design and varying instrument performance. We detail how we correct for variations in observational completeness, the input `target' densities due to imaging systematics, and the ability to confidently measure redshifts from DESI spectra. We then summarize how remaining uncertainties in the corrections can be translated to systematic uncertainties for particular analyses. We describe the weights added to maximize the signal-to-noise of DESI DR1 2-point clustering measurements. We detail measurement pipelines applied to the LSS catalogs that obtain 2-point clustering measurements in configuration and Fourier space. The resulting 2-point measurements depend on window functions and normalization constraints particular to each sample, and we present the corrections required to match models to the data. We compare the configuration- and Fourier-space 2-point clustering of the data samples to that recovered from simulations of DESI DR1 and find they are, generally, in statistical agreement to within 2\% in the inferred real-space over-density field. Abstract

Accurate, precise, and computationally efficient removal of unwanted activity that exists as a combination of periodic, quasi-periodic, and non-periodic systematic trends in time-series photometric data is a critical step in exoplanet transit analysis. Throughout the years, many different modeling methods have been used for this process, often called "detrending." However, there is no community-wide consensus regarding the favored approach. In order to mitigate model dependency, we present an ensemble-based approach to detrending via community-of-models and the $\texttt{democratic detrender}$: a modular and scalable open-source coding package that implements ensemble detrending. The $\texttt{democratic detrender}$ allows users to select from a number of packaged detrending methods (including cosine filtering, Gaussian processes, and polynomial fits) or provide their own set of detrended light curves via methods of their choosing. The $\texttt{democratic detrender}$ then combines the resulting individually detrended light curves into a single method marginalized (via median selection) light curve. Additionally, the $\texttt{democratic detrender}$ inflates the uncertainties of each time-series data point using information from the median absolute deviation between the individually detrended light curve, propagating information into the final detrended light curve about the added uncertainty due to the correctness of the underlying models., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, submitted to ApJS. Abstract

Axions are a well-motivated candidate for dark matter. The preeminent method to search for axion dark matter is known as the axion haloscope, which makes use of the conversion of axions to photons in a large magnetic field. Due to the weak coupling of axions to photons however, the expected signal strength is exceptionally small. To increase signal strength, many haloscopes make use of resonant enhancement and high gain amplifiers, while also taking measures to keep receiver noise as low as possible such as the use of dilution refrigerators and ultra low-noise electronics. In this paper we derive the theoretical noise model based on the sources of noise found within a typical axion haloscope receiver chain, using the Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) as a case study. We present examples of different noise calibration measurements at 1280~MHz using a variable temperature stage with ADMX during its most recent data taking run. The consistency between the measurements and the detailed model provide suggestions for future improvements within ADMX and other axion haloscopes to reach a lower noise temperature and to simplify the receiver chain design.

Abstract

The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment is sensitive to narrow axion flows, given axions compose a fraction of the dark matter with a non-negligible local density. Detecting these low-velocity dispersion flows requires a high spectral resolution and careful attention to the expected signal modulation due to Earth's motion. We report an exclusion on the local axion dark matter density in narrow flows of $\rho_a \gtrsim 0.03\,\mathrm{GeV/cm^3}$ and $\rho_a \gtrsim 0.004\,\mathrm{GeV/cm^3}$ for Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitski and Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov axion-photon couplings, respectively, over the mass range $3.3-4.2\,\mu\text{eV}$. Abstract

The Stellarator de Costa Rica 1 (SCR-1) is a modular stellarator with a small aspect ratio that serves as a valuable research and training tool for plasma magnetic confinement. This study explored a new heating mechanism and the factors that influence it. The current state of the device and plasma discharge are initially presented. Subsequently, the measurement process was utilized to determine radial profiles of electron density and electron temperature using a single Langmuir probe, and the results were compared with theoretical predictions based on the particle and energy balance. Additionally, the VMEC code was employed to calculate magnetic flux surfaces with characteristics such as a low aspect ratio, low beta parameter, negative magnetic shear, and decreasing rotational transform along magnetic flux surfaces. The Mercier criterion was employed to conduct a linear stability analysis, which identified a magnetic well that played a crucial role in the linear stability of the majority of magnetic flux surfaces. Feasibility studies of electron Bernstein waves were conducted using the IPF-FMDC full-wave code, with input files generated from the device and known plasma characteristics. The results obtained from the IPF-FMDC full-wave code revealed that the O-X conversion percentage reached a maximum of 63 % when considering radiation reflection in the vacuum vessel. Significant effects of plasma curvature on the O-X wave conversion and normalized electron density scale length were observed, while the change in the SCR-1 heating position did not produce a significant impact. Three damping mechanisms affecting O-X conversion were studied, and one of the principal effects was the SX-FX conversion due to steep electron density gradient. Additionally, stochastic electron heating showed a low electron field amplitude, which is important for limiting the electron Bernstein wave propagation., Comment: 32 pages, 21 figures

30. Collaborative Online International Learning: Experiences in Higher Education

Abstract

Background/purpose: Collaborative Online International Learning projects have emerged as practices that connect students from different countries. Such actions can be appealing to universities but also arouse uncertainty. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to explore COIL experiences in HE reported in the scientific literature in terms of implementation and effectiveness, as well as the implications for the future of HE. Materials/methods: Following the PRISMA protocol, the systematic literature review was conducted in the Web of Science and Scopus databases from 2000 to 2023. The search was conducted on the titles and abstracts of the documents, and Boolean operators were utilized. Results: The findings regarding the implementation of COIL experiences in HE showed that they were concentrated in the last 4 years, with this form of learning being framed in social constructivism and not in a theoretical, epistemological framework. In the reported projects, intercultural and linguistic competence development was mainly promoted and implemented in English. Besides, assessment in COIL activities focused on the acquisition of intercultural competencies and satisfaction with the project undertaken. However, regarding effectiveness, the studies did not provide comparative results regarding the effects of different research designs or methodologies. The results also revealed that existing research did not typically suggest implications for the future of HE. Conclusion: We conclude that COIL practices are planned from a practical point of view, although based on social constructivism, and these experiences involved a prevalence of English and Anglo-Saxon culture. The implementation experience is well documented but suffers from a weak design, without control groups and with an incoherent definition of variables. It also presents some challenges, such as the lack of professional recognition for professors and the need for research designs that examine their effectiveness for students learning and their contributions to internationalization.

31. Implementing the CLIL Approach through Online Games in EFL Education

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to implement the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach employing online games for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning. The participants were 53 EFL Ecuadorian university students, 17 males and 36 females, who were enrolled in an English Major and a TEFL Master program. Their proficiency level corresponded to B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference. The study followed a mixed-method approach, which involved the administration of a diagnostic survey, an online perceptions questionnaire, an interview, and an observation checklist. Games designed in Quizizz, Kahoot, Genially, and Socrative were implemented for 8 weeks so that the participants could access them to practice the content of each lesson. The findings revealed that the CLIL approach through games improves language learning and communication. Moreover, they foster students' confidence, knowledge retention, and comprehension of the subject matter, enhancing reasoning, problem-solving, critical thinking, and cultural awareness.

32. Using Technology-Supported Mindfulness Tools to Alleviate Test Anxiety in the Elementary Classroom

Abstract

Childhood anxiety has been an increasing focus of classroom teachers in recent years. It creates an excess of problems, which can lead to other health-related issues. Long-term effects may include mental health problems, such as depression and isolation, due to becoming accustomed to coping with anxiety daily. This curriculum project designed a series of lessons that were delivered on a weekly basis to a class of second-grade students. Once the pandemic forced schools to move online, these mindfulness activities were delivered through remote instruction which greatly benefitted the young students during this difficult time. The purpose of this action research study was to create and evaluate mindfulness-based interventions as an effective approach that may be used to positively impact student learning and their emotional well-being in the classroom. Participants were a small group of teachers who worked or volunteered at the school where the curriculum was used. They were purposefully selected by having knowledge or experience in mindfulness-based interventions. This qualitative study gathered data from an open-ended evaluation questionnaire. Once received, the data was analyzed by identifying codes and themes and then the feedback was used to make improvements to the curriculum. The results of the study indicated that mindfulness-based interventions were highly successful in each classroom and are recommended to be included in the daily practice of elementary schools.

Abstract

We report on successful refractive index profiling of commercially available step-index and in-house made graded-index multimode specialty optical fibers by means of X-ray computed microtomography. Our results demonstrate that the latter is an advantageous technique for characterizing large core optical fibers, which allows for retrieving information about the refractive index at optical frequencies by exploiting the absorption coefficient of X-rays.

Abstract

The Human Variome Project (HVP) is an international effort aiming systematically to collect and share information on all human genetic variants. It has been working for years in collaboration with local scientific societies by establishing systems to collect every genetic variant reported in a country and to store these variants within a database repository: LOVD (Argentinian chapter: ar.lovd.org). Formally established in 2017 in the Argentinian Node, up to June 2019 we collected more than 25,000 genetic variants deposited by 17 different laboratories. Nowadays the HVP country nodes represent more than 30 countries. In Latin America there are four country nodes: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela; the first two interacted recently launching the LatinGen database. In the present work we want to share our experience in applying the HVP project focusing on its organization, rules and nomenclature to reach the goal of sharing genetic variants and depositing them in the Leiden Open Variation Database. Contributing laboratories are seeking to share variant data to gain access all over the country. It is one of our goals to stimulate the highest quality by organizing courses, applying current nomenclature rules, sponsoring lectures in national congresses, distributing newsletter to serve the Argentinian genomics community and to stimulate the interaction among Latin America countries. Abstract

Primates have been studied extensively to understand their behavior and the mechanisms that allow information processing. However, when we closely analyze the species studied and the different projects and topics carried out with them, we found that some species have been highly studied, while others have only a few studies. These differences create a significant underrepresentation of some primate species that could be especially problematic when we use the available information to track the evolution and the diversification of behavior and the mechanisms for information processing. With this in mind, this review aims to show the state-of-the-art of different topics studied in Mexican primates and identify topics that could be studied in the future. The review also aims to demonstrate why working with native species is a path that many low- and middle-income countries like Mexico can follow to develop research programs in their homelands.

Abstract

This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Abstract

Codesign, an integral part of computer architecture referring to the information interaction in hardware-software stack, is able to boost the algorithm mapping and execution in the computer hardware. This well applies to the noisy intermediate-scale quantum era, where quantum algorithms and quantum processors both need to be shaped to allow for advantages in experimental implementations. The state-of-the-art quantum adiabatic optimization algorithm faces challenges for scaling up, where the deteriorating optimization performance is not necessarily alleviated by increasing the circuit depth given the noise in the hardware. The counterdiabatic term can be introduced to accelerate the convergence, but decomposing the unitary operator corresponding to the counterdiabatic terms into one and two-qubit gates may add additional burden to the digital circuit depth. In this work, we focus on the counterdiabatic protocol with a codesigned approach to implement this algorithm on a photonic quantum processor. The tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometer mesh provides rich programmable parameters for local and global manipulation, making it able to perform arbitrary unitary evolutions. Accordingly, we directly implement the unitary operation associated to the counterdiabatic quantum optimization on our processor without prior digitization. Furthermore, we develop and implement an optimized counterdiabatic method by tackling the higher-order many-body interaction terms. Moreover, we benchmark the performance in the case of factorization, by comparing the final success probability and the convergence speed. Abstract

Hot subdwarfs are compact blue evolved objects, burning helium in their cores surrounded by a tiny hydrogen envelope. Most models agree on a common envelope binary evolution scenario in the Red Giant phase. However, the binarity rate for these objects is yet unsolved. We aim to develop a novel classification method for identifying hot subdwarf binaries within large datasets using Artificial Intelligence methods and Gaia DR3 data. The results will be compared with those obtained previously using VOSA (Virtual Observatory Sed Analyzer) on coincident samples. The methods include several machine learning techniques. We used Support Vector Machines (SVM) to classify 3084 hot subdwarf stars based on their color-magnitude properties. Of these, 2815 objects have Gaia Data Release 3 BP/RP spectra, which were classified using Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). The findings demonstrate a high agreement level (70-90%) with VOSA's classification, indicating that machine learning methods effectively classify sources with an accuracy comparable to human inspection or non-AI techniques. SVM in a radial basis function achieves 70.97% reproducibility for binary targets using photometry. CNN reaches 84.94% for binary detection using spectroscopy. We also found that the single-binary differences are especially observable on the infrared flux in our GDR3 BP/BR spectra, at wavelengths larger than 700 nm. We found that all our methods are effective in discerning between single and binary systems and are consistent with the results previously obtained with VOSA. In global terms, considering all quality metrics, CNN is the method that provides the best accuracy. The methods are also effective for detecting peculiarities in the spectra. Further research is needed to refine our techniques and enhance automated classification reliability, especially for large-scale surveys.

Abstract

We experimentally study the statistics of the transition path time taken by a submicron bead to successfully traverse an energy barrier created by two optical tweezers in two prototypical viscoelastic fluids, namely, aqueous polymer and micellar solutions. We find a very good agreement between our experimental distributions and a theoretical expression derived from the generalized Langevin equation for the particle motion. Our results reveal that the mean transition path time measured in such viscoelastic fluids have a non-trivial dependence on the barrier curvature and they can be significantly reduced when compared with those determined in Newtonian fluids of the same zero-shear viscosity. We verify that the decrease of the mean transition path time can be described in terms of an effective viscosity that quantitatively coincides with that measured by linear microrheology at a frequency determined by the reactive mode that gives rise to the unstable motion over the barrier. Therefore, our results uncover the linear response of the particle during its thermally activated escape from a metastable state even when taking place in a non-Markovian bath., Comment: 4 figures

Abstract

We present an enhanced bias-field digitized counterdiabatic quantum optimization (BF-DCQO) algorithm to address higher-order unconstrained binary optimization (HUBO) problems. Combinatorial optimization plays a crucial role in many industrial applications, yet classical computing often struggles with complex instances. By encoding these problems as Ising spin glasses and leveraging the advancements in quantum computing technologies, quantum optimization methods emerge as a promising alternative. We apply BF-DCQO with an enhanced bias term to a HUBO problem featuring three-local terms in the Ising spin-glass model. Our protocol is experimentally validated using 156 qubits on an IBM quantum processor with a heavy-hex architecture. In the studied instances, the results outperform standard methods, including the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), quantum annealing, simulated annealing, and Tabu search. Furthermore, we perform an MPS simulation and provide numerical evidence of the feasibility of a similar HUBO problem on a 433-qubit Osprey-like quantum processor. Abstract

We present a novel metric designed, among other applications, to quantify biased behaviors of machine learning models. As its core, the metric consists of a new similarity metric between score distributions that balances both their general shapes and tails' probabilities. In that sense, our proposed metric may be useful in many application areas. Here we focus on and apply it to the operational evaluation of face recognition systems, with special attention to quantifying demographic biases; an application where our metric is especially useful. The topic of demographic bias and fairness in biometric recognition systems has gained major attention in recent years. The usage of these systems has spread in society, raising concerns about the extent to which these systems treat different population groups. A relevant step to prevent and mitigate demographic biases is first to detect and quantify them. Traditionally, two approaches have been studied to quantify differences between population groups in machine learning literature: 1) measuring differences in error rates, and 2) measuring differences in recognition score distributions. Our proposed Comprehensive Equity Index (CEI) trade-offs both approaches combining both errors from distribution tails and general distribution shapes. This new metric is well suited to real-world scenarios, as measured on NIST FRVT evaluations, involving high-performance systems and realistic face databases including a wide range of covariates and demographic groups. We first show the limitations of existing metrics to correctly assess the presence of biases in realistic setups and then propose our new metric to tackle these limitations. Abstract

The tracking-by-detection paradigm is the mainstream in multi-object tracking, associating tracks to the predictions of an object detector. Although exhibiting uncertainty through a confidence score, these predictions do not capture the entire variability of the inference process. For safety and security critical applications like autonomous driving, surveillance, etc., knowing this predictive uncertainty is essential though. Therefore, we introduce, for the first time, a fast way to obtain the empirical predictive distribution during object detection and incorporate that knowledge in multi-object tracking. Our mechanism can easily be integrated into state-of-the-art trackers, enabling them to fully exploit the uncertainty in the detections. Additionally, novel association methods are introduced that leverage the proposed mechanism. Abstract

We report the results of a QCD axion dark matter search with discovery ability for Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky (DFSZ) axions using an axion haloscope. Sub-Kelvin noise temperatures are reached with an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier cooled by a dilution refrigerator. This work excludes (with a 90% confidence level) DFSZ axions with masses between 3.27 to 3.34 {\mu}eV, assuming a standard halo model with a local energy density of 0.45 GeV/cm${}^3$ made up 100% of axions.
