Although molecular characterization of soil organic carbon is crucial for understanding its dynamics, studies on reclaimed coal mine soil are comparatively limited. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to ascertain the influence of tree species on the soil organic carbon content and molecular characteristics of soil organic carbon in a chronosequence of reclaimed coal mine soil. To investigate the effects of reclamation time on soil organic carbon characteristics, a chronosequence of three coal mine soil was used, each exhibiting different ages of reclamation: 8, 14, and 25 years. Along a re-vegetation age gradient of 8 to 25 years, the total soil organic carbon content increased. Within the 25 years of restored soil, the FTIR absorption intensities were lowest within the range of 2,920 and 2,850 cm−1, while they were highest within the range of 1,685, 1,425, and 1,285 cm−1which indicates presence of aromatic C=C. This shows that aromatic compounds contributed more significantly to the composition of soil organic carbon compared to aliphatic structures. Based on molecular characteristics, it is suggested that the soil organic carbon in 25-year old revegetated coal mine soil consists of aromatic and recalcitrant carbon. Among three tree species Dalbergia sissoo can be used for reclamation as quality and quantity of carbon found was higher under this tree species. In conclusion, the results indicated that the molecular properties of soil organic carbon were extremely important for understanding the dynamics of soil organic carbon in a restored coal mine soil chronosequence. X‐ray powder diffraction (XRPD) is an effective technique for identifying and quantifying mineral types in soil. However, few studies have compared quantitative values based on XRPD with those from conventional wet chemical methods (WCMs). Here, we determined the primary mineral content in artificial mineral mixtures and 79 agricultural soils from across Japan using WCMs and two XRPD‐based quantitative methods: the mineral intensity factor (MIF) and the full‐pattern summation (FPS) methods performed with the powdR package for R. For artificial mixtures, the accuracy of mineral content determination (i.e., micas, quartz, K‐feldspar, and plagioclase) followed the order: WCMs > FPS > MIF. For Japanese agricultural soils, the contents of each mineral were highly similar between WCMs and FPS, based on mean absolute differences and correlation coefficients. Alternatively, MIF displayed lower similarities with WCMs, likely due to preferred orientation and peak shift or overlap issues. Using the FPS method, the mica and amorphous phase contents were positively and significantly correlated with nonexchangeable K content and cation exchange capacity, respectively. Additionally, the plagioclase content was negatively and significantly correlated with clay content. Thus, the powdR‐based FPS method is recommended for determining the mineral composition of soils, as it allows for a clearer and more quantitative demonstration of the relationship between individual minerals and soil properties. Background: The expansion of bamboo forests increases environmental heterogeneity in tea plantation ecosystems, affecting soil properties and microbial communities. Understanding these impacts is essential for developing sustainable bamboo management and maintaining ecological balance in tea plantations. Methods: We studied the effect of the continuous expansion of Pleioblastus amarus into tea plantations, by establishing five plot types: pure P. amarus forest area (BF), P. amarus forest interface area (BA), mixed forest interface area (MA), mixed forest center area (TB), and pure tea plantation area (TF). We conducted a comprehensive analysis of soil chemical properties and utilized Illumina sequencing to profile microbial community composition and diversity, emphasizing their responses to bamboo expansion. Results: (1) Bamboo expansion significantly raised soil pH and enhanced levels of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus, particularly noticeable in BA and MA sites. In the TB sites, improvements in soil nutrients were statistically indistinguishable from those in pure tea plantation areas. (2) Continuous bamboo expansion led to significant changes in soil bacterial diversity, especially noticeable between BA and TF sites, while fungal diversity was unaffected. (3) Bamboo expansion substantially altered the composition of less abundant bacterial and fungal communities, which proved more sensitive to changes in soil chemical properties. Conclusion: The expansion of bamboo forests causes significant alterations in soil pH and nutrient characteristics, impacting the diversity and composition of soil bacteria in tea plantations. The increasing demand for sustainable agricultural practices necessitates innovative solutions for soil fertilization. This study aimed to assess the viability of using limestone mining co-products from the Irati and Corumbataí Formations as multi-nutrient sources for Glycine max cultivation. The experiment utilized a double factorial design (7 × 2) with five replications, randomly arranged and placed in pots within a greenhouse. The factors examined were the type of co-product (sedimentary rocks from the Irati Formation: rhythmite and bituminous shale; and the Corumbataí Formation: clayey siltstone) and the soil type (Haplic Arenosol and Rhodic Ferralsol). Soil ion content was assessed at 21 and 140 days after treatment application. Each pot housed four G. max plants, with leaf harvest occurring after 42 days of growth. Macronutrient content, leaf production, and soil ion availability were determined thereafter. Overall, co-product application led to increased soil pH and availability of essential ions, including K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, P, S-SO42−, and Si. At 140 days, rhythmite was notably effective in increasing pH, Ca2+, and Mg2+ in Haplic Arenosol, with respective increases of 22%, 224%, and 696%. Bituminous shale, on the other hand, significantly increased S-SO42− content by 67% and 426% in Rhodic Ferralsol and Haplic Arenosol, respectively. Moreover, the application of co-products resulted in enhanced accumulation of K, Ca, Mg, and S in G. max plants, alongside increased leaf production. In conclusion, the utilization of mining co-products positively influenced soil and plant chemical attributes, particularly enhancing leaf production in G. max. These findings highlight the potential of co-products as environmentally friendly solutions for soil fertilization, supporting sustainable agricultural practices. The behavior of slow mass movements like soil creep is well known to be governed by soil composition, slope, and cycles in temperature and rainfall. However, their magnitude and importance vary dramatically in often unpredictable ways, with important consequences for creep rate and infrastructure damage prediction. Here, we present long-term (2015–2022) creep measurements for four regions of the UK characterized by intense mass movement activity but different bedrock lithologies. We also obtained co-located temperature and precipitation time series over this period, as well as local measurements of slope and soil thickness and composition. Our goal was to deconvolve the relative importance of each observable on creep behavior. Our results imply that parent lithology governs first-order creep rates indirectly via hillslope repose angles and soil thickness and composition. Rates of ground movement on peat and sandstone soils are dictated by annual fluctuations in precipitation and temperature, respectively. By employing a simple error-minimizing regression routine, we demonstrate how creep rates can be predicted in these settings as a function of climatological observables. Over thinner limestone and thicker clay soils, however, our model fails: in these settings, we suggest that creep behavior is instead dominated by variations in regolith thickness, and slope and clay mineral content, respectively. Alternaria solani is causing early blight and thereby yield reduction in the potato production. The pathogen is today mainly controlled by fungicide applications. The severity of early blight can vary largely among fields. The aim of this study was to gain understanding of what field and management parameters are the most important for early blight severity to create more farm-specific fungicide treatment recommendations. Over three seasons, 2019–2021, 52 field plots were observed at farms in southern Sweden. In each field a 24 m × 24 m plot was left untreated against early blight. However, late blight fungicides were applied. The disease severity was scored twice in the untreated plot and information about various soil/plant parameters and farmer's management was collected from each field. In addition to the observational study, field trials were performed in 2021 and 2022, evaluating the effect of potassium fertiliser levels on severeness of infection. We found that the soil composition was of significant importance for the severity of infection, in particular the sand, clay, and potassium content. The early blight severity was directly positively correlating with a high sand content. Low levels of leaf potassium increased the severity of early blight infection, and this observation was confirmed in field trials where different levels of potassium fertiliser were applied. Further no reduction in disease severity was observed with a four-year crop rotation. With knowledge about field and management factors that influence disease, field-specific recommendations can be developed supporting an integrated pest management strategy for early blight to reduce and optimise the fungicide usage. Biomass feedstocks are growing in importance due to their ability to serve as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels for large scale energy generation, with bioenergy projected to be a growing part of the UK's energy mix. Combined with technologies such as carbon capture and storage, sustainable bioenergy has the potential to produce negative emissions with including counterbalancing residual emissions. This paper presents a systematic review of the sustainability impacts of wood biomass (forestry/SRC) and Miscanthus, which are grown as energy fuels, comparing the three key indicators of sustainability: soil organic carbon sequestration rates, biodiversity, and water use efficiency (WUE). Analysis has shown significant influence from primary soil composition (p < 0.001) and previous land use (p < 0.001) on soil organic carbon sequestration rates following conversion to biomass feedstock production. Conversion from arable to forestry can have positive rates of sequestration of 1.4 ± 0.3 Mg C ha−1 year−1 on mineral soils, while similar conversions on a highly organic soils can lead to losses of −25 Mg C ha−1 year−1. This indicates a strong need for careful site selection for future forestry plantations. Miscanthus showed no preference under mineral or organic soils for carbon sequestration rate. Biodiversity at different trophic scales is impacted differently by biomass feedstock production. No significant impact on invertebrates was demonstrated between feedstocks but there is a significant difference between crops (p < 0.001) for vertebrates at higher trophic levels. A limited dataset was collected for WUE from the review, but analysis showed comparable WUE rates for Miscanthus and short rotation coppice, while forestry had significantly lower (p < 0.001) WUE. With global temperatures increasing and changes to climate, water stress is likely to increase. Deciphering microbial communities and functions is crucial to understanding ecosystem self-purification in response to contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs). This study aimed to determine the dynamics of the prokaryotic community composition, ecological functions and functional genes using third-generation sequencing and quantitative PCR before and after the addition of soil bioremediation nutrients (SBN) to PHC-contaminated soils. Differential prokaryotic community compositions and ecological functions were observed in soils from 4 areas contaminated long-term with different levels and compositions of PHCs. Biostimulation by SBN and water with soil turning for Biopiles B and D led to obvious reconstruction of prokaryotic communities and functional profiles. The addition of SBN with soil turning which increased oxygen supply enhanced degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by increasing the abundance of the PAH-degrading Immundisolibacter cernigliae, Rugosibacter aromaticivorans and Sphingobium fuliginis. Tax4fun2 analysis revealed increases in xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism/PHC-degraded enzymes after adding SBN which might promote the potential degradation of PHCs. Increases in the abundance of alkB, alkB1, XylE and PHE and in the expression of PHE after adding SBN reflected that the growth of bacteria with these genes was enhanced and considerable amounts of phenol induced the expression of PHE. The concentrations of PHCs and nutrients were primary factors affecting prokaryotic community compositions and functions. The study provides insights into the potential functions of the changes of prokaryotic communities regulating by the addition of SBN, to their efficiency to degrade PHCs. AbstractElectroosmosis (EO) has been well recognized as a technique for drainage and consolidation in soft soil, however, the presence of an ice phase in frozen soil at subzero temperatures introduces considerable complexity to the electroosmotic process. To investigate the influence of ambient temperature effect on the frozen soil electroosmosis, a series of laboratory tests were conducted under four ambient temperatures (AT) conditions. Taking into account the influence of soil composition, silty clay (Clay) and silt (Loess) were selected. Experimental procedures involved the measurement of current and temperature, with subsequent analysis focusing on comparisons of moisture content changes. The results indicated that the moisture migration of frozen Loess is more obvious than that of Clay. Meanwhile, moisture migration is significantly influenced by soil particle size, and as ambient temperature decreases, the impact of soil particles on moisture migration in frozen soil diminishes gradually. Moisture migration mainly occurs within the first 30 h after power-on on and the speed of moisture migration gradually decreases with the extension of power-on time. Heavy metal pollution not only causes detrimental effects on the environment but also poses threats to human health; thus, it is crucial to monitor the heavy metal content in the soil. Hyperspectral technology, characterized by high spectral resolution, rapid response, and non-destructive detection, is widely employed in soil composition monitoring. This study aims to investigate the effects of dimensionality reduction methods on the performance of hyperspectral inversion. To this end, 56 soil samples were collected in Daye, with the corresponding hyperspectral data acquired by the advanced ASD Fieldspec4 instrument. We employed the linear dimensionality reduction method, i.e., the principal component analysis (PCA), and non-linear method in terms of kernel PCA (KPCA) with polynomial, radial basis function (RBF), and sigmoid kernels to reduce the dimensionalities of original spectral reflectance and that processed by first-derivative transformation (FDT). Building upon this foundation, we applied the Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost) algorithm for inverting the soil copper (Cu) content. The performance of each inversion model was evaluated by evaluation indices in terms of the coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error (RMSE), and residual prediction deviation (RPD). The results revealed that the KPCA with polynomial kernel function applied to the FDT-based spectra could yield the optimal inversion accuracy, with corresponding R2, RMSE, and RPD being 0.86, 21.47 mg·kg−1, and 2.72, respectively. This study demonstrates that applying the FDT with KPCA processing can significantly improve the accuracy of the hyperspectral inversion for soil Cu content, providing a potential approach for monitoring heavy metal pollution using hyperspectral technology. To elucidate the biological mechanisms driving the growth of various pumpkin varieties to different sizes under identical management conditions while in the same field, the soil microbial community structures in the rhizospheres of giant-pumpkin (GP) and small-pumpkin (SP) varieties were analyzed. The results revealed that a significantly higher abundance of bacterial communities could be detected in the rhizospheres of the giant pumpkin varieties, such as Gemmatimonadota, norank__f__norank__o_Gaiellales, norank__f__Gemmatimonadaceae, Bryobacter, Sphingomonas, norank__f__JG30-KF-AS9, and norank__f__norank__o___Elsterales, than in those of the small-sized pumpkins. Additionally, norank_f__norank_o__Elsterale, Ellin6067, norank_f__67-14, and Chujaibacter were unique dominant soil bacteria genera in the rhizospheres of the giant pumpkins. By contrast, Arthrobacter, norank_f__Roseiflexaceae, unclassified_f__Rhizobiaceae, Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium, Nocardioides, Mycobacterium, norank_f__norank_o__Vicinamibacterales, and Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia were the unique dominant soil bacterial genera in the rhizospheres of the small pumpkins. Moreover, at the fungal genus level, unclassified_c__Chytridiomycetes, Podosphaera, and Colletotrichum presented significant differences between the giant-pumpkin (GP) and small-pumpkin (SP) rhizospheres. In addition, unclassified__p__Rozellomycota, unclassified__c__Chytridiomycetes, Penicillium, and unclassified__f__Chaetomiaceae were unique dominant soil fungal genera in the rhizospheres of the giant pumpkins (GPs). By contrast, Podosphaera, Colletotrichum, unclassified__f__Plectosphaerellaceae, unclassified__o_Boletales, Scytalidium, unclassified__p__Rozellomycota, and unclassified__o_Agaricales were the unique dominant soil fungal genera in the rhizospheres of the small pumpkins (SPs). PICRUSt and FUNGuild functional prediction analyses revealed that the giant-pumpkin rhizosphere microbial community had significantly increased translation, ribosomal structure and biogenesis, nucleotide transport and metabolism, defense mechanisms, replication, recombination and repair, wood saprotroph, and undefined saprotroph levels. The above results suggest that the soil microbial compositions differed between the rhizospheres of the giant- (GP) and small-pumpkin (SP) varieties, even though the plants were grown in the same field under identical management conditions. Meanwhile, bacterial genera such as norank_f__norank_o__Elsterale, Ellin6067, norank_f__67-14, and Chujaibacter, in addition to fungal genera such as unclassified__p__Rozellomycota, unclassified__c__Chytridiomycetes, Penicillium, and unclassified__f__Chaetomiaceae, can be speculated as potential soil functional micro-organisms associated with improved pumpkin size. To explore and utilize the abundant soil microorganisms and their beneficial functions, high-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze soil microbial compositions in the rhizosphere of red and green amaranth varieties. The results showed that significant differences in soil microbial composition could be found in the rhizosphere of amaranth plants with different color phenotypes. Firstly, soil bacterial compositions in the rhizosphere were significantly different between red and green amaranths. Among them, Streptomyces, Pseudonocardia, Pseudolabrys, Acidibacter, norank_ f_ Micropepsaceae, Bradyrhizobium, and Nocardioides were the unique dominant soil bacterial genera in the rhizosphere of red amaranth. In contrast, Conexibacter, norank_f_norank_o_norank_c_TK10, and norank_f_ norank_o_ norank_ c_AD3 were the special dominant soil bacterial genera in the rhizosphere of green amaranth. Additionally, even though the soil fungal compositions in the rhizosphere were not significantly different between red and green amaranths, the abundance of the dominant soil fungal genera in the rhizosphere showed significant differences between red and green amaranths. For example, unclassified_k__Fungi, Fusarium, Cladophialophora, unclassified_c__Sordariomycetes and unclassified_p__Chytridiomycota significantly enriched as the dominant soil fungal genera in the rhizosphere of the red amaranth. In contrast, Aspergillues only significantly enriched as the dominant soil fungal genus in the rhizosphere of green amaranth. All of the above results indicated that amaranth with various color phenotypes exactly recruited different microorganisms in rhizosphere, and the enrichments of soil microorganisms in the rhizosphere could be speculated in contributing to amaranth color formations. Despite the growing catalogue of studies detailing the taxonomic and functional composition of soil bacterial communities, the life history traits of those communities remain largely unknown. This study analyzes a global dataset of soil metagenomes to explore environmental drivers of growth potential, a fundamental aspect of bacterial life history. We find that growth potential, estimated from codon usage statistics, was highest in forested biomes and lowest in arid latitudes. This indicates that bacterial productivity generally reflects ecosystem productivity globally. Accordingly, the strongest environmental predictors of growth potential were productivity indicators, such as distance to the equator, and soil properties that vary along productivity gradients, such as pH and carbon to nitrogen ratios. We also observe that growth potential was negatively correlated with the relative abundances of genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, demonstrating tradeoffs between growth and resource acquisition in soil bacteria. Overall, we identify macroecological patterns in bacterial growth potential and link growth rates to soil carbon cycling. Antarctica terrestrial ecosystems are facing the most threats from global climate change, which is altering plant composition greatly. These transformations may cause major reshuffling of soil community composition, including functional traits and diversity, and therefore affect ecosystem processes in Antarctica. We used high‐throughput sequencing analysis to investigate soil nematodes under 3 dominant plant functional groups (lichens, mosses, and vascular plants) and bare ground in the Antarctic region. We calculated functional diversity of nematodes based on their diet, life histories, and body mass with kernel density n‐dimensional hypervolumes. We also calculated taxonomic and functional beta diversity of the nematode communities based on Jaccard dissimilarity. The presence of plants had no significant effect on the taxonomic richness of nematodes but significantly increased nematode functional richness. The presence of plants also significantly decreased taxonomic beta diversity (homogenization). Only mosses and vascular plants decreased nematode functional beta diversity, which was mostly due to a decreased effect of the richness difference component. The presence of plants also increased the effect of deterministic processes potentially because environmental filtering created conditions favorable to nematodes at low trophic levels with short life histories and small body size. Increasing plant cover in the Antarctic due to climate change may lead to increased diversity of nematode species that can use the scarce resources and nematode taxonomic and functional homogenization. Gypsum ecosystems occur in arid and semi-arid areas, where evaporation is intense and annual precipitation is low and insufficient to leach the gypsum. They host sparse and scattered vegetation, composed of species specialized in this soil type. In Cyprus, gypsophilous vegetation is part of the priority habitat *1520 Iberian gypsum steppes (Gypsophiletalia) characterized by Campanula fastigiata, Gypsophila linearifolia, and Teucrium salaminium. Despite the ecological importance of gypsophilous vegetation, its distribution and ecology in Cyprus is still understudied. This study aimed to provide the first comprehensive account of the gypsum communities, focusing on the distribution of gypsophytes in relation to the substrate and the floristic composition of gypsum soils. Floristic inventory was carried out in 27 sites with gypsum soil. Biophysical information and data about human impact were also recorded. A total of 97 taxa were identified, including three gyspophile species, two gypsoclines, 20 gypsovags, and 72 waifs. A new endemic Rostraria hadjikyriakou was recorded in five locations. The known geographical distribution of gypsophilous vegetation has been updated. For 35% of the sites, gypsophilous vegetation was recorded for the first time while none of the characteristic gypsophilous species was found in the western part of the island. The taxonomic composition of soil (Technosol and Retisol) bacterial communities near the salt dump of a potassium enterprise (Solikamsk, Perm krai) was analyzed by the method of high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Soil samples without plants and of the rhizosphere of plants of the species Calamagrostis epigeios (L.) Roth from plots located 1–1.5, 8, and 780 m and 11 km from the salt dump were studied. It was found that bacteria of the phyla Pseudomonadota, Bacteroidota, Actinomycetota, Acidobacteriota, Verrucomicrobiota, and Gemmatimonadota predominated in all soil samples. The impact of halite waste on the taxonomic composition of bacterial communities in soils was the greatest on plots in the salinization zone in the immediate vicinity of the salt dump (1–1.5 m). In soil samples without plants taken in these areas, bacteria of the order "Candidatus Actinomarinales" predominated, the proportion of representatives of the phyla Acidobacteriota and Verrucomicrobiota, the class Actinobacteria, and the family Chitinophagaceae decreased, and the proportion of bacteria of the family Xanthomonadaceae in bacterial communities increased in comparison with nonsaline soils (at a distance of 8 and 780 m and 11 km from the salt dump). In the rhizosphere bacterial communities of plants, growing in the salinization zone, the proportion of representatives of the phylum Acidobacteriota and of the families Chitinophagaceae and Enterobacteriaceae decreased, while the proportion of the families Xanthomonadaceae and Flavobacteriaceae became greater. The influence of the salt dump on soil bacterial communities from plots located 8 m and 730 m from the salt dump was revealed: it was manifested in the presence of representatives of the order "Candidatus Actinomarinales" (1.4–1.6%), of the families Nitrosomonadaceae (3.0–6.1%) and Saprospiraceae (1.0–1.9%), of the genus Ilumatobacter (1.6–2.8%), and of nonculturable bacteria of the family Rhodanobacteraceae (1.3–1.5%). [Objective] The aims of this study are to investigate the soil mechanical composition and ecological effect under the protection forest of sandy land near Qehan Dry Salt Lake, and to provide scientific and technological support for local protection forest construction and sandy land management. [Methods] The soil samples of 0 20 cm were collected in inter-belt root neck and under canopy of two protection forests. Tamarix chinensis and Haloxylon ammodendron on the southern edge of Qehan Dry Salt Lake. The mechanical composition of soil samples was measured by laser particle sizer. And the average particle size, standard deviation, skewness., peak state and fractal dimension were calculated and analyzed. [Results] (1) The soil mechanical composition is mainly composed of sand particles, compared to bare sand (CK), the total contents of clay and silt increased by 5.19%, 0.59% 20.44% and 1.53%, 3.93% 4.32% in Tamarix chinensis and Haloxylon ammodendron (inter-belt, root neck and under canopy), respectively, with the most pronounced performance under canopy. (2) Soil sort ability was poor under shelterbelts, with a positive skewness towards a narrower tips the fractal dimensions was between 2.13~2.70. higher under both shelterbelt canopies than between strips and root necks and the overall particle size tended towards finer particles compared to CK. (3) Soil particle size frequencies revealed low slopes at all locations in the shelterbelts, indicating that the particle size class richness of both shelterbelts was better than those in the control. This study aimed to examine the bacterial, methanogenic archaeal, and eukaryotic community structure in both the midgut and hindgut of Pachnoda marginata larvae using an amplicon sequencing approach. The goal was to investigate how various diets and the soil affect the composition of these three‐domain microbial communities within the gut of insect larvae. The results indicated a notable variation in the microbial community composition among the gut compartments. The majority of the bacterial community in the hindgut was composed of Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae. Nocardiaceae, Microbacteriaceae, and Lachnospiraceae were detected in midgut samples from larvae feeding on the leaf diet, whereas Sphingomonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Promicromonasporaceae dominated the bacterial community of midgut of larvae feeding on the straw diet. The diet was a significant factor that influenced the methanogenic archaeal and eukaryotic community patterns. The methanogenic communities in the two gut compartments significantly differed from each other, with the midgut communities being more similar to those in the soil. A higher diversity of methanogens was observed in the midgut samples of both diets compared to the hindgut. This research investigated the local wisdom of Sakon Nakhon province, Thailand, on cultivating Indigofera plants for optimal natural indigo dye yield. Focusing on Indigofera suffruticosa Mill. and Indigofera tinctoria L., the study explored the impact of pod development stages and harvesting time on dye yield. The findings showed that harvesting at the brown pod stage (18 - 20 weeks) and early morning (6:00 a.m.) yielded the most dye. Additionally, the study compared the Indigofera plants cultivation under 100 % and 60 % sunlight exposure, demonstrating that full sunlight significantly increased dye yield. Moreover, Indigofera suffruticosa Mill. gave significantly more indigo dye yield than Indigofera tinctoria L. (p < 0.05). This investigation, therefore, underscores the value of incorporating local knowledge into optimal cultivation practices for enhanced indigo production. Soil microbial traits and functions play a central role in soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. However, at the macroscale (regional to global) it is still unresolved whether (i) specific environmental attributes (e.g., climate, geology, soil types) or (ii) microbial community composition drive key microbial traits and functions directly. To address this knowledge gap, we used 33 grassland topsoils (0–10 cm) from a geoclimatic gradient in Chile. First, we incubated the soils for 1 week in favorable standardized conditions and quantified a wide range of soil microbial traits and functions such as microbial biomass carbon (MBC), enzyme kinetics, microbial respiration, growth rates as well as carbon use efficiency (CUE). Second, we characterized climatic and physicochemical properties as well as bacterial and fungal community composition of the soils. We then applied regression analysis to investigate how strongly the measured microbial traits and functions were linked with the environmental setting versus microbial community composition. We show that environmental attributes (predominantly the amount of soil organic matter) determined patterns of MBC along the gradient, which in turn explained microbial respiration and growth rates. However, respiration and growth normalized for MBC (i.e., specific respiration and growth) were more linked to microbial community composition than environmental attributes. Notably, both specific respiration and growth followed distinct trends and were related to different parts of the microbial community, which in turn resulted in strong effects on microbial CUE. We conclude that even at the macroscale, CUE is the result of physiologically decoupled aspects of microbial metabolism, which in turn is partially determined by microbial community composition. The environmental setting and microbial community composition affect different microbial traits and functions, and therefore both factors need to be considered in the context of macroscale SOC dynamics. The current study was designed to explore all possible etiological features including mineral composition of soil and their effects on hematobiochemical profile in buffaloes suffering from post-parturient hemoglobinuria. The total 384 buffaloes were randomly selected from Tehsil Bhalwal, District Sargodha, Pakistan. The post parturient hemoglobinuria was observed during the period of four months, from November 2016 to February 2017. The parameters including point prevalence of PPHU and hemato-biochemical profile were investigated. The data was analyzed using T-test and regression analysis through SPSS software. Out of 384 animals, 40 (10.4%) were confirmed with PPHU. All hemato-biochemical profile showed significant difference between healthy and affected groups instead mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), serum calcium and glucose, which were not significant. Vital signs including pulse and respiration showed significant difference but heart rate was found non-significant between both groups. The results regarding mineral analysis of the soil showed significant difference in phosphorus and copper and non-significant difference in calcium and molybdenum. Moreover, strong positive correlation was associated with phosphorus and molybdenum level while moderate positive correlation was attributed to the calcium and copper level in the soil. It is concluded that post parturient hemoglobinuria in buffaloes of Tehsil Bhalwal was associated with variation of soil composition, particularly the deficiency of phosphorus which is main cause of hemoglobinuria. Parent rock is a key factor contributing to differences in soil physical and chemical properties. However, the mechanism of microbial carbon cycle mediated by soils with different physical and chemical properties based on parent rock are unclear. In this study, the physical and chemical properties of weathering soils of different parent rocks and the characteristics of soil carbon content were analysed. The composition of soil bacteria and fungi and the genes associated with carbon cycle were analysed via genome sequencing. The results showed that the highest abundance and diversity of soil microbes was detected in purple sandstone, followed by limestone and the least in basalt. Further, the predominant bacterial phyla in the three parent rocks were Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria. The predominant fungi were those belonging to phyla Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and Mortierellomycota. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and available nitrogen (AN), available potassium(AK) and available phosphorus (AP) were the main factors affecting the composition of soil bacteria, while soil soil water content (SWC) pH and AP were the main factors affecting the composition of soil fungi. Similarly, the relative abundance of functional genes associated with soil carbon cycle was the greatest in the purple sandstone, followed by limestone and the least in basalt. The variation in relative abundance of the genes was correlated with the soil physico-chemical properties, especially soil SWC, pH, and AP, which limited carbon metabolism of the soil microbes. Earthworm communities influence soil carbon and nitrogen circulation by altering the diversity and composition of microbial communities, which improves soil fertility. Studying the soil nutrient composition and bacterial communities change in response to earthworm community natural invasion may be key to exploring earthworm ecological functions and accurately assessing C and N mineralization in artificial forests and croplands. In this study, we examined the communities of five earthworm species in ecosystems characterized by six different land-use types, such as buttonwood forest, walnut forest, apple orchard, kiwi orchard, ryegrass land, and corn field. The Metaphire baojiensis (d) and Amynthas carnosus planus were dominant earthworm species. Among different land-use types, earthworm densities ranged from 2 to 27 ind·m−2 in summer and 15 to 40 ind·m−2 in spring. However, surface vermicompost weight in summer (296.7 to 766.0 g·m−2) was greater than in spring. There was a positive correlation between the weight of the vermicompost and earthworm numbers in the same season. Soil carbon (C) and total nitrogen (N) of vermicompost ranged from 5.12 to 20.93 g·kg−1 and from 0.52 to 1.35 g·kg−1, respectively. Compared with soil, the contents of vermicompost C and N increased 2.0 to 4.3 times and 1.6 to 7.7 times, respectively. The average C/N of vermicompost (9.5~23.5) was higher than in the soil (7.3~19.8). Due to the higher abundances of C and N in the soil of corn fields and kiwi orchards, which cultivate higher abundances of earthworms and more vermicompost, the C and N and C/N of vermicompost is higher than in the soil. C and N were accumulated by earthworms' excreting and feeding activity instead of vegetation in vermicompost. Earthworm community structure plays key roles in decreasing bacterial diversity and adding Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Chloroflex in vermicompost, resulting in enriching soil C and N content and increasing C/N in vermicompost. Therefore, the evaluation of different vegetation ecosystems in soil C and N pool accumulation and mineralization should be given more attention regarding the function of earthworm communities in the future. Not enough research has been conducted on the mechanisms influencing the stability of soil aggregates in coastal saline–alkaline soil and the dynamic changes in aggregates in the succession process of coastal saline–alkaline soil brought on by longer planting times. In this study, soil aggregate composition, stability, and influencing factors of 0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–60 cm soil layers in different planting time stages were analyzed in the reclaimed land at the initial stage of afforestation and the Taxodium hybrid 'Zhongshanshan' plantation with planting times of 6, 10, 17, and 21 years. The results show that, with the increase in planting time, the aggregate stability of the plantation increased significantly. In the 0–20 cm soil layer, the geometric mean diameter (GMD) and aggregate size >0.25 mm (R0.25) increased by 81.15% and 89.80%, respectively, when the planting time was 21 years, compared with the reclaimed land. The structural equation (SEM) showed that planting time had a direct positive effect (path coefficient 0.315) on aggregate stability. However, soil sucrase (0.407) and β-glucosidase (0.229) indirectly improved the stability of aggregates by affecting soil organic carbon. In summary, the establishment of Taxodium hybrid 'Zhongshanshan' plants on coastal saline–alkali land is beneficial for stabilizing soil aggregates, improving soil structure, and boosting soil quality. Taxus contorta (family Taxaceae) is a native plant of temperate region of western Himalaya. The current study investigated the effect of altitude on the phytochemical composition and mycorrhizal diversity, associated with distribution of T. contorta in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, India. Quantitative phytochemical analysis of the leaf extracts indicated that alkaloid levels decreased with altitude, with the highest value in Himri's methanol extracts (72.79 ± 1.08 mg/g) while phenol content increased with altitude, peaking in Nankhari's methanol extracts (118.83 ± 5.90 mg/g). Saponin content was higher in methanol extracts (78.13 ± 1.66 mg/g in Nankhari, 68.06 ± 1.92 mg/g in Pabbas, and 56.32 ± 1.93 mg/g in Himri). Flavonoid levels were notably higher in chloroform extracts, particularly in Nankhari (219.97 ± 2.99 mg/g), and positively correlated with altitude. Terpenoids were higher in chloroform extracts at Himri (11.34 ± 0.10 mg/g) and decreased with altitude. Taxol content showed minimal variation between solvents and altitudes (4.53–6.98 ppm), while rutin was only detected in methanol extracts (1.31–1.46 ppm). Mycorrhizal spore counts in T. contorta's rhizosphere varied with altitude: highest at Himri (77.83 ± 2.20 spores/50 g soil), decreasing to Pabbas (68.06 ± 1.96 spores/50 g soil) and lowest at Nankhari (66.00 ± 2.77 spores/50 g soil), with 17 AMF species identified overall, showing significant altitudinal influence on spore density. The rhizosphere of T. contorta was shown to be dominated by the Glomus species. The rhizospheric soil of the plant was found to be slightly acidic. Organic carbon and available potassium content decreased contrasting with increasing available nitrogen and phosphorus with altitude. Correlation data showed strong negative links between organic carbon (−0.83), moderate positive for nitrogen (0.46) and phosphorus (0.414), and moderate negative for potassium (−0.56) with the altitude. To investigate the impact of sediment on water infiltration and soil structure under muddy water irrigation conditions, indoor muddy water film hole infiltration experiments were conducted. Four different muddy water sediment concentrations (3%, 6%, 9%, 12%) and four typical sediment particle size distributions (which were quantified by the physical clay content with a particle size of less than 0.01 mm, d0.01: 9.13%, 16.46%, 27.34%, 44.02%) were employed to examine how muddy water properties affect infiltration law and the stratum compactum soil particle composition under film hole irrigation. The results showed that as the muddy water sediment concentration and physical clay content increased, the wetting front migration distance, cumulative infiltration amount, and soil water content gradually decreased simultaneously. The Kostiakov infiltration model effectively captured the changes in soil water infiltration during muddy water film hole irrigation, exhibiting a strong fit with a high coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.9). With higher muddy water sediment concentration, the deposition layer thickness increases within the same infiltration time. Conversely, higher physical clay content leads to a decrease in deposition layer thickness. The characteristics of the muddy water have a significant impact on the particle composition of the soil in the stratum compactum caused by film hole irrigation. The deposition layer has a lower relative content of fine soil particles compared to muddy water, but this content increases with higher muddy water sediment concentration and physical clay content. In the stranded layer soil, fine particles have a higher relative content than the original soil. Fine particle content increases notably with higher muddy water sediment concentration and physical clay content. The stranded layer soil particles exhibit a higher fractal dimension than the original soil, and as the infiltrated soil layer depth increases, the soil fractal dimension decreases until it matches the original soil. The fractal dimension increased with the increase in muddy water sediment concentration and physical clay content in muddy water irrigation conditions under the same soil layer depth. Today, crop suggestions and necessary guidance have become a regular need for a farmer. Farmers generally depend on their local agriculture officers regarding this, and it may be difficult to obtain the right guidance at the right time. Nowadays, crop datasets are available on different websites in the agriculture sector, and they play a crucial role in suggesting suitable crops. So, a decision support system that analyzes the crop dataset using machine learning techniques can assist farmers in making better choices regarding crop selections. The main objective of this research is to provide quick guidance to farmers with more accurate and effective crop recommendations by utilizing machine learning methods, global positioning system coordinates, and crop cloud data. Here, the recommendation can be more personalized, which enables the farmers to predict crops in their specific geographical context, taking into account factors like climate, soil composition, water availability, and local conditions. In this regard, an existing historical crop dataset that contains the state, district, year, area-wise production rate, crop name, and season was collected for 246,091 sample records from the Dataworld website, which holds data on 37 different crops from different areas of India. Also, for better analysis, a dataset was collected from the agriculture offices of the Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati districts in Odisha state, India. Both of these datasets were combined and stored using a Firebase cloud service. Thirteen different machine learning algorithms have been applied to the dataset to identify dependencies within the data. To facilitate this process, an Android application was developed using Android Studio (Electric Eel | 2023.1.1) Emulator (Version 32.1.14), Software Development Kit (SDK, Android SDK 33), and Tools. A model has been proposed that implements the SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique) to balance the dataset, and then it allows for the implementation of 13 different classifiers, such as logistic regression, decision tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), SVC (Support Vector Classifier), random forest (RF), Gradient Boost (GB), Bagged Tree, extreme gradient boosting (XGB classifier), Ada Boost Classifier, Cat Boost, HGB (Histogram-based Gradient Boosting), SGDC (Stochastic Gradient Descent), and MNB (Multinomial Naive Bayes) on the cloud dataset. It is observed that the performance of the SGDC method is 1.00 in accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and ROC AUC (Receiver Operating Characteristics–Area Under the Curve) and is 0.91 in sensitivity and 0.54 in specificity after applying the SMOTE. Shrub invasion affects plant growth and soil physicochemical properties, resulting in soil microbiota metabolic pathway changes. However, little is known about the shrub expansion intensity of microbial metabolic pathway processes. In this study, we used metagenome sequencing technology to investigate changes in soil microbial C and N metabolic pathways and community structures, along with different shrub invasion intensities, in the Sanjiang Plain wetlands. Different shrub invasion intensities significantly affected the soil microbial composition (β diversity), with no significant effect on the α diversity compared to CK. AN, pH, and TP were the major factors influencing the microbial community's structures. Compared to CK, the shrub expansion intensity did not significantly affect C fixation and central metabolism but significantly reduced methanogenesis, which involves the CO2-to-methane transition that occurs in methane metabolism, and denitrification, the nitrite to nitric oxide (nirK or nirS) transition that occurs in N metabolism. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the biogeochemical cycles of wetland ecosystems in cold northern regions undergoing shrub invasion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parque Nacional La Campana (PNLC) is recognized worldwide for its flora and fauna, rather than for its microbial richness. Our goal was to characterize the structure and composition of microbial communities (bacteria, archaea and fungi) and their relationship with the plant communities typical of PNLC, such as sclerophyllous forest, xerophytic shrubland, hygrophilous forest and dry sclerophyllous forest, distributed along topoclimatic variables, namely, exposure, elevation and slope. The plant ecosystems, the physical and chemical properties of organic matter and the soil microbial composition were characterized by massive sequencing (iTag-16S rRNA, V4 and ITS1-5F) from the DNA extracted from the soil surface (5 cm, n = 16). A contribution of environmental variables, particularly related to each location, is observed. Proteobacteria (35.43%), Actinobacteria (32.86%), Acidobacteria (10.07%), Ascomycota (76.11%) and Basidiomycota (15.62%) were the dominant phyla. The beta diversity (~80% in its axes) indicates that bacteria and archaea are linked to their plant categories, where the xerophytic shrub stands out with the most particular microbial community. More specifically, Crenarchaeote, Humicola and Mortierella were dominant in the sclerophyllous forest; Chloroflexi, Cyanobacteria and Alternaria in the xerophytic shrubland; Solicoccozyma in the dry sclerophyllous forest; and Cladophialophora in the hygrophilous forest. In conclusion, the structure and composition of the microbial consortia is characteristic of PNLC's vegetation, related to its topoclimatic variables, which suggests a strong association within the soil microbiome. Reforestation of native shrub on shifting sand dunes has been widely used for desertification control in semi-arid grassland in Northeast China. Previous studies have confirmed that plantation establishment facilitates fixing sand dunes, restoring vegetation, and improving soil properties, but very few have focused on the response of the soil fungal community. In this study, a chronosequence of Caragana microphylla (CM) shrub sand-fixation plantations (8-, 19-, and 33-year-old), non-vegetated shifting sand dunes (0 years), and adjacent natural CM forests (NCFs; 50-year-old) in the Horqin sandy land were selected as experimental sites. Soil properties including enzymatic activities were determined, and the composition and structure of the soil fungal community were investigated using the Illumina MiSeq sequencing technique based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA. This study aimed to (1) describe the response of the soil fungal community to revegetation onto a moving sand dune by planting a native shrub plantation; (2) determine the main soil factors driving the succession of the fungal community; and (3) discuss whether the soil fungal community can be restored to its original state by reforestation. The reforestation of CM significantly ameliorated soil properties, increased soil fungal diversity, and altered the composition and structure of the soil fungal community. Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Zoopagomycota were the dominant phyla in all sites. Ascomycota did not respond to plantation development, whereas the other two dominant phyla linearly increased or decreased with the plantation age. The relative abundance of dominant genera varied with sites and showed a waning and waxing characteristic. The composition and structure of the soil fungal community in the 33-year CM plantation were very close to that of the NCF, indicating the restorability of the soil fungal community. The succession of the soil fungal community was directly driven by soil properties, of which soil moisture, organic matter, total N, urease, and protease were the main affecting factors. The article addresses anthropogenic and geological conditions related to the development of soil subsidence in the western zone of Recife (Brazil). Over the past 50 years, human activity has intensified in areas previously affected by soft soils (clay, silt, and sandstone) resulting in subsidence due to additional loads (landfills and constructions). The duration of the settlement process can be significantly influenced by the specific characteristics of the soil composition and geological conditions of the location. This work presents, for the first time, accurate InSAR time series maps that describe the spatial pattern and temporal evolution of the settlement, as well as the correlation with the geological profile, and validation with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data. Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PS-InSAR) was employed in the analysis of Single Look Complex (SLC) images generated by 100 ascending COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) and 65 PAZ (32 ascending, and 33 descending) from the X-band, along with 135 descending Sentinel-1 (S1) acquisitions from the C-band. These data were acquired over the period from 2011 to 2023. The occurrence of subsidence was identified in several locations within the western region, with the most significant displacement rates observed in the northern, central, and southern areas. In the northern region, the displacement rates were estimated to be approximately −20 mm/year, with the Várzea and Caxangá neighborhoods exhibiting the highest rates. In the central region, the displacement rates were estimated to be approximately −15 mm/year, with the Engenho do Meio, Cordeiro, Torrões, and San Martin neighborhoods exhibiting the highest rates. Finally, in the southern region, the displacement rates were estimated to be up to −25 mm/year, with the Caçote, Ibura, and Ipsep neighborhoods exhibiting the highest rates. Additionally, east–west movements were observed, with velocities reaching up to −7 mm/year toward the west. These movements are related to the lowering of the land. The nutritional and functional properties of squashes are influenced by various factors, such as the stage of plant development, soil composition, and type of fertilizer. This study evaluates the impact of various organic fertilizers on Cucurbita moschata D. properties. For this purpose, squashes were fertilized using Ash at 10 kg/25 m2, bovine compost at 62.5 kg/25 m2, and a 1:1 mixture of ash and bovine compost. Negative control (without fertilizers) and positive control (NPK 20‐10‐10 at 2 kg/25 m2) were included. Post‐harvest, the yield, carotenoids, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidant activities were assessed. Ash fertilizer resulted in the highest number of fruits per plant (2.20 ± 0.16). Regarding flavonoids, the bovine compost yielded the highest level (428.67 ± 2.62 mg/100 g of edible portion). The mixture of ash and bovine compost produced fruits with the highest content of total carotenoids, β‐carotene, lycopene, and total phenolic compounds (249.7 ± 3.68, 219.80 ± 3.41, 26.07 ± 0.41, and 575.00 ± 9.95 mg/100 g of edible portion, respectively). Moreover, carotenoids extracted from this mixture exhibited the highest inhibition of DPPH and ABTS free radicals (30.87 ± 0.65 and 47.32 ± 1.30%, respectively). The differences inmass loss of leaf litter are primarily thought to be driven by microbial activity, especially by fungi. However, the existence of such differences across large spatial scales has not been well explored in field studies and the underlying mechanisms of difference are still unclear, especially for the role of different fungal guilds in driving different mass losses. We conducted a 1-year decomposition study within each of four coastalwetlands inChina to test the difference inmass loss across a large spatial scale (ranging from 26° N to 41° N in latitude). In each wetland, six sites including three composed of P. australis and three composed of another dominant plant species typically in coastal ecosystems were selected. We used P. australis leaf litter as the standard decomposition material, placing it into litter bags with mesh sizes 1mm and 4 mm, respectively. Final litter mass loss was examined approximately after 3, 9 and 12months. The differentmass loss was quantified using additionalmass loss at P. australis sites compared to that at another species sites. We found that themass loss of leaf litter of P. australis showed a clear difference across multiple coastal wetlands only at later stages of decomposition, which was independent of mesofauna (mesh size) contribution to decomposition. Furthermore, the observed difference in mass loss was primarily attributed to the dissimilarities in initial soil fungal community, particularly the symbiotrophic fungi, rather than the soil bacterial community. Our results provide empirical evidence of a large-scale difference in mass loss in litter decomposition and have linked the observed difference to different soil fungal guilds. These results indicate that symbiotrophic fungi might play a direct or indirect role in driving difference inmass loss, which contributes to a better understanding and invites in-depth further investigation on the underlying microbe-driven mechanisms of the difference. Contextualization: The incorporation of new techniques and technologies to learn about the composition and characteristics of soils used in agricultural production is booming. Free license products such as Sentinel-2 satellite images allow the correlation of soil properties with spectral indices. Knowledge gap: In the agricultural sector, indices calculated from satellite images have focused on vegetation characterization. To a lesser extent, studies have been conducted to evaluate the correlation of those applied to mineralogical prospecting to correlate them with the chemical characteristics of the soil. Purpose: This study was developed with to evaluate the correlation of the indexes of ferric oxides (B11/B8), iron silicates (B12/B11), ferrous iron (B12/8 + B3/4), and alteration (B11/B12), with the content of chemical elements of importance in crop production. Methodology: A crop of 282 hectares was selected in the municipality of Puerto López in the Meta department. Using a Sentinel-2 image, the evaluated indices were calculated. After obtaining the indices, 40 sites were selected for a composite sampling of soils to determine the following characteristics: pH in water (1:1 potentiometric), organic matter (Walkey and Black), P (Bray II), Al (KCl 1N), Ca, Mg, K, and Na (Ammonium Acetate), Fe (DTPA). With the information obtained, a multiple regression analysis was carried out using the “Stepwise” method. The raster layers with the calculated indices were used as independent variables, and the values of the properties determined in the laboratory were used as the variables to predict. Results and conclusions: The evaluated indexes showed a correlation greater than 0.60 with Mg and Ca content. A correlation between 0.40 and 0.60 was found between the indices and organic carbon and Fe content. The calculated regression models revealed fits of 0.54, 0.47, and 0.33 to Mg, Ca, and Fe, respectively. The findings of this research lead to the conclusion that it is possible from Sentinel-2 images to estimate the concentration of elements available to plants in the edaphoclimatic conditions of the Colombian Altillanura. In root nodule symbioses (RNS) between nitrogen (N)‐fixing bacteria and plants, bacterial symbionts cycle between nodule‐inhabiting and soil‐inhabiting niches that exert differential selection pressures on bacterial traits. Little is known about how the resulting evolutionary tension between host plants and symbiotic bacteria structures naturally occurring bacterial assemblages in soils. We used DNA cloning to examine soil‐dwelling assemblages of the actinorhizal symbiont Frankia in sites with long‐term stable assemblages in Alnus incana ssp. tenuifolia nodules. We compared: (1) phylogenetic diversity of Frankia in soil versus nodules, (2) change in Frankia assemblages in soil versus nodules in response to environmental variation: both across succession, and in response to long‐term fertilization with N and phosphorus, and (3) soil assemblages in the presence and absence of host plants. Phylogenetic diversity was much greater in soil‐dwelling than nodule‐dwelling assemblages and fell into two large clades not previously observed. The presence of host plants was associated with enhanced representation of genotypes specific to A. tenuifolia, and decreased representation of genotypes specific to a second Alnus species. The relative proportion of symbiotic sequence groups across a primary chronosequence was similar in both soil and nodule assemblages. Contrary to expectations, both N and P enhanced symbiotic genotypes relative to non‐symbiotic ones. This work provides insights into the effect of fire on soil processes in Mediterranean-type ecosystems in Cyprus. Soil samples from mountainous sites that were subjected to a summer wildfire and adjacent control samples were collected. Incubations were used to estimate basal respiration and isolate soil CO2 release of heterotrophic microorganisms from autotrophic root respiration and heterotrophic respiration from litter decomposition. Physicochemical property changes, bacteria community changes using DNA extraction and 16S rRNA gene analysis, and the effects of ash and fresh litter addition were studied to reveal the microbial composition and the post-fire soil function. Laboratory incubation showed that burned soils constantly showed higher microbial respiration rates compared with control unburned areas, even six months after a fire. Adding ash to unburned samples increased microbial respiration, suggesting that increased nutrient availability positively corelates with the increased release of CO2 from fire-affected soil. Elevated temperatures due to the wildfire exerted significant effects on the composition of soil bacterial microbiota. Nevertheless, the wildfire did not affect the alpha-diversity of soil bacteria. Saline‐sodic paddy soils in the Songnen Plain suffer from nitrogen loss due to nitrification. The purpose of the study is to explore soil saline improvement and nitrification mitigation effects of polyaspartic calcium (PASP‐Ca) by evaluating changes of soil quality, nitrification, and microbial communities. Four PASP‐Ca application treatments (additions of 0, 500, 1000, and 1500 kg hm−2) were studied in an experiment in saline‐sodic paddy soils of the Songnen Plain, China. Results showed that PASP‐Ca application significantly decreased soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and water‐soluble salt ions, and significantly increased soil total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), urease activity (UA), and sucrase activity (SA). PASP‐Ca application significantly slowed down soil nitrification, which was manifested in a significant increase in ammonium nitrogen (NH4+−N$$ {\mathrm{NH}}_4^{+}-\mathrm{N} $$) and a significant decrease in nitrate nitrogen (NO3−−N$$ {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-}-\mathrm{N} $$) and ammonia monooxygenase activity (AMO). The composition and distribution of soil nitrifying microbial communities were affected by soil salinity, nutrient, and enzyme activities. Ammonia‐oxidizing bacteria (AOB) plays an important role in the nitrification process of saline‐sodic paddy soils, while PASP‐Ca application significantly inhibited nitrification by suppressing AOB amoA gene abundance. This study shows that PASP‐Ca, as an effective amendment, can improve soil salinization and slow down nitrification, which has an important role and significance in improving nitrogen utilization and reducing nitrogen loss of saline‐sodic soils. Dominant plants play crucial roles in supporting the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Plants can influence the spatial heterogeneity of environmental factors, as well as the spatial turnover in the composition of soil communities (i.e. β‐diversity of soil communities). However, we still poorly understand how dominant plants drive the spatial turnover in multiple ecosystem functions (β‐multifunctionality hereafter), and to which extent the effects of dominant plants are mediated by changes in environmental heterogeneity and the β‐diversity of soil communities.Antarctica supports one of the most challenging environments on the planet including low temperature and water availability. Here, we collected soil samples under three dominant plants (lichen, moss and vascular plants) and bare ground. We measured carbon storage, nutrient availability, nutrient decomposition, microbial biomass and pathogen control to calculate β‐multifunctionality.Both non‐vascular and vascular plants were associated with increased β‐multifunctionality compared to bare ground. We further showed that lichen mainly affected β‐multifunctionality through soil temperature heterogeneity and β‐bacterial diversity. Similarly, moss mainly affected β‐multifunctionality through the spatial heterogeneity of soil water content and β‐bacterial diversity. However, vascular plants did not significantly affect environmental heterogeneity. Instead, the responses of β‐multifunctionality to vascular plants were mainly driven by the β‐diversity of soil communities. These results indicate that environmental heterogeneity is important for turnover in multiple ecosystem functions in early successional stages (dominated by non‐vascular plants), while the importance of soil communities' heterogeneity becomes more significant in late successional stages (dominated by vascular plants).Synthesis. Our findings highlight the fundamental role of dominant plants in controlling the spatial turnover in ecosystem functions, and suggest that accelerated succession under current climate warming may increase bacterial β‐diversity but decrease abiotic heterogeneity, thereby leading to both increases (e.g. regarding functions related to microbial biomass) and decreases (e.g. regarding functions related to nutrient availability) in β‐multifunctionality and hence the spatial turnover in levels of ecosystem functioning. In the context of a circular economy, special attention should be paid to the rational management of biodegradable waste. Currently, a potentially valuable waste material, rich in ingredients available to plants, is digestate, obtained as a by-product in agricultural biogas plants. The presented study aimed to determine the impact of digestate (DIG) from an agricultural biogas plant on soil reaction (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), sorption properties (SBC, HAC, CEC, BS), and chemical composition of soil. The research was based on a pot experiment in which increasing doses of liquid (LD) and solid (SD) forms of DIG were used in corn cultivation, balanced in terms of the amount of N introduced into the soil. The composition of DIG varied and depended on the LD or SD form. The LD was characterized by a lower pH value and higher EC compared to the SD form. The LD contained much less TC, fewer macroelements, and fewer trace elements. The application of LD significantly increased in the soil the content of TC, Ntot, available K, P, Fe, and Mn, and exchangeable cations K+. The SD significantly increased the content of available P, Mg, and Mn and exchangeable cations Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the soil. Both forms of digestate increased the total content of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Pb, and Ni) in the soil. Land degradation severely affects soil functions, thereby weakening crop productivity. However, the quantitative effects of the soil organic matter (SOM) composition and soil microbial properties on maize yield remain unclear under different levels of land degradation. Here, a gradient of land degradation was selected for sampling in the Horqin Sandy Land in northeast China. The results show that the relative abundances of aliphatic and aromatic groups decreased by 21.51% and 86.01% with increasing land degradation, respectively, and the considerable increase in polysaccharide groups led to a decrease in stability and resistance to SOM decomposition. Microbial properties, such as microbial biomass carbon, basic respiration, qCO2, and enzyme activities, decreased as a result of land degradation. The phospholipid fatty acid content and the ratio between bacteria and fungi markedly decreased with an increasing level of land degradation, and the ratio of G+ to G− markedly increased. Correlation analysis confirmed that the microbial properties were significantly related to the SOM composition, and the random forest model indicated that fungi were key factors affecting maize yield (7.15%, p < 0.05). Moreover, the results of the structure equation modelling revealed that land degradation reduced the soil physiochemical properties, resulting in a decrease in microorganisms, causing variations in the SOM composition and directly leading to a decrease in crop yield. The effect of microorganisms (β = 0.84 ***) on maize yield was greater than that of the SOM composition (β = 0.53 **). Aim Bacteria that promote plant growth, such as diazotrophs, are valuable tools for achieving a more sustainable production of important non-legume crops like rice. Different strategies have been used to discover new bacteria capable of promoting plant growth. This work evaluated the contribution of soil diazotrophs to the endophytic communities established in the roots of rice seedlings cultivated on seven representative soils from Uruguay. Methods and results The soils were classified into two groups according to the C and clay content. qPCR, terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP), and 454-pyrosequencing of the nif H gene were used for analyzing diazotrophs in soil and plantlets' roots grown from seeds of the same genotype for 25 days under controlled conditions. A similar nif H abundance was found among the seven soils, roots, or leaves. The distribution of diazotrophs was more uneven in roots than in soils, with dominance indices significantly higher than in soils (nif H T-RFLP). Dominant soils' diazotrophs were mainly affiliated to Alphaproteobacteria and Planctomycetota. Conversely, Alpha, Beta, Gammaproteobacteria , and Bacillota were predominant in different roots, though undetectable in soils. Almost no nif H sequences were shared between soils and roots. Conclusions Root endophytic diazotrophs comprised a broader taxonomic range of microorganisms than diazotrophs found in soils from which the plantlets were grown and showed strong colonization patterns. Associations between bryophytes and dinitrogen (N2)-fixing bacteria are a significant source of exogenous N in unmanaged boreal and possibly temperate ecosystems. However, the extent to which biological N2-fixation (BNF) applies to the boreal–temperate ecotone remains elusive. The current focus on common species limits our understanding of BNF at the community level. Our objective was to characterize the presence of cyanobacteria and BNF activity associated with bryophytes in the coastal forests of Fundy National Park (New Brunswick, Canada). In 2021, we harvested three liverwort and 11 moss species from two sites (71 samples) and measured environmental covariates (e.g., canopy composition and soil pH). We used stable isotope incubations with 15N2 gas in growth chambers to quantify potential BNF activity and used phycocyanin extractions as a cyanobacteria abundance proxy. Many species presented detectable BNF rates, which were similar to or higher than those of well-studied feather mosses. These included species that have rarely been found to contribute to BNF. While cyanobacteria were present on most samples, we found no positive association between abundance and BNF. Our findings are among the first records for bryophyte-associated BNF in the boreal–temperate ecotone of eastern Canada and offer insights into the potential role of this process in N cycling in coastal conifer-dominated forests. Simple Summary: Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart), commonly known as the hairy maggot blow fly, is important in forensic and medical contexts because it colonizes carcasses and is a causative agent of myiasis in animals and humans. Studying the development of its pupae is crucial for understanding the time since death in forensic investigations and for containing the spread of myiasis. This study investigated how temperature, soil type, and moisture affect the development of Ch. rufifacies pupae in Western Australia. The present study investigates the developmental process of Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart) pupae and their dependency on soil composition, moisture levels, and temperature changes. This research holds implications for forensic and veterinary applications, providing crucial insights for estimating minimum postmortem intervals and managing myiasis-causing flies in diverse environments. Specifically, the study explores the impact of five moisture content levels in loam and sandy soils (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%) on the pupal development of Ch. rufifacies under two distinct constant temperature regimes (24 ± 1 °C and 30 ± 1 °C). A significant correlation was observed between soil type and temperature regarding the time required to complete the pupal stages; however, moisture had no significant impact. Larvae exhibited varying survival rates across the two temperatures and five moisture levels in the two types of soils, particularly under extremely lower moisture conditions (0%) at 30 ± 1 °C, failing to progress to the pupariation stage. Additionally, growth parameters such as pupal length and width of the fully formed puparia were significantly impacted by temperature, soil type, and moisture level. Adult head width was systematically measured across different moisture levels and soil types, revealing distinct temperature-dependent responses. Furthermore, a sex-specific analysis highlighted that female Ch. rufifacies consistently displayed larger head widths and higher emergence rates compared to their male counterparts. This research enhances our understanding of the intricate interrelationship among three environmental variables: soil type, moisture level, and temperature, elucidating their collective impact on the pupation processes of dipterans. Beech wood, renowned for its diverse applications spanning construction, flooring, furniture, veneer, and plywood, holds a paramount position among industrial wood species. Nevertheless, the myriad of beech species worldwide, coupled with the dynamic impact of climate change, have produced structural variations within beech trees. Extensive research has scrutinized the physical and mechanical attributes of beech wood species across the globe. Findings reveal distinguishable mechanical strength, yet increased density leads to notable rates of shrinkage and swelling, somewhat constraining its utility in select domains. Identifying research gaps can create new efforts aimed at exploiting the potential of these wood resources. The presence of the olive tree in Tuscany, Italy, in its forms that have survived to the present day as an essential component of the landscape dates back many centuries. Global change is now threatening it. Therefore, it is important to find markers to enhance the olive tree environment in terms of its resilience. The aim of the research was to investigate the composition of soil bacteriomes in contrasting geochemical environments using a geochemistry approach based on the behavior of the REEs, inherited from parent rock material. Bacteriome assemblages and REE content were analyzed in 48 topsoils developed in six geochemical Tuscan environments. Combined geochemical, geoinformatic, and bioinformatic techniques highlighted the existence of four bacteriome assemblages depending on Light-REEs. Further results showed that the soil bioavailable fraction of REEs was related to parent rock materials, pH, and bacteriome composition. The most abundant bacteria were Microlunatus in graded fluvio-lacustrine soils, Gaiella in graded arenaceous soils, Bradyrizhobium in pyroclastic soils, and Rubrobacter in soils on gentle slopes of calcareous and carbonatic lithologies. This research represents a starting point to define new indicators able to assess the resilience of the olive trees in the Mediterranean landscape and characterize the territory of extra virgin olive oils. Mal secco is a vascular disease of citrus caused by the mitosporic fungus Plenodomus tracheiphilus. Soil containing infected plant material constitutes an inoculum source for root infections. In this study, the soil bacterial and fungal communities of five lemon orchards located in Syracuse Province (Sicily, Italy) affected by mal secco were analyzed. Soil samples were collected under lemon tree canopies and subjected to total genomic DNA extraction. The fungal DNA was detected through qPCR in all orchards, with variable concentrations. Bacterial and fungal communities were profiled using 16S and ITS amplicon-based high-throughput sequencing, respectively. According to our results, the relative abundances of the most represented bacterial phyla (e.g., Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota) changed across the orchards, while in the fungal community, the phylum Ascomycota was dominant, with Basidiomycota and Mortierellomycota abundances fluctuating. On the whole, β diversity analysis showed significant variation in the composition of the soil microbial communities across the orchards. This result was confirmed by the analysis of the core community (taxa present at ≥ 75% of total samples), where putative beneficial bacteria resulted in significantly enriched fungus-infected soil samples, suggesting complex microbial interactions. 【Objective】The effects of microenvironment variations on the community composition and diversity of soil microarthropods in tobacco fields were explored to provide the scientific basis for selecting optimal varieties for cultivation and determining planting patterns in karst tobacco-growing areas.【Method】The community composition and diversity of soil microarthropods in the growing areas of Yunyan 87 and K326 were investigated by the Tullgren method in July 2022 in Fenggang county of Guizhou province. Based on the investigation, the relationship between soil microarthropods and microenvironment (tobacco varieties, planting pattern and their interactions) was analyzed.【Result】A total of 6 classes, 16 orders and 70 families of soil microarthropods were identified in the sample plot. The soil microarthropod community composition was significantly different between K326 and Yunyan 87. In K326, the soil microarthropod community composition was very significantly different between ridge and furrow, while no significant difference was observed in Yunyan 87 between the ridge and furrow. Furthermore, the soil microarthropod community composition in the ridge varied very significantly between K326 and Yunyan 87, but no significant difference was observed between K326 and Yunyan 87 in the furrow pattern.The richness, density and Shannon index (H′) of soil microarthropods in K326 were 4.18, 5535.56 and 1.16, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in Yunyan 87 (values of 2.12, 1720.00 and 0.65, respectively) . Furthermore, these indexes in the ridge of K326 were 5.47, 10 520.00 and 1.40, respectively, which were significantly greater than those in the furrow pattern (values of 2.90, 551.11 and 0.92, respectively) . Notably, only the density of soil microarthropods in the ridge (3000.00) of Yunyan 87 was higher than that in the furrow (400.00), while the richness and Shannon index (H′) had no obvious differences. Moreover, the richness, density and Shannon index (H′) of soil microarthropods in the ridge of Yunyan 87 were 1.97, 3000.00 and 0.61, respectively, which were significantly lower than those in the ridge of K326 (values of 5.47, 10 520.00 and 1.40, respectively), whereas no significant differences were found in these parameters between the furrow areas of Yunyan 87 and K326.【Conclusion】The influence of micro-topographical variations resulting from ridge cultivation on soil microarthropods is regulated by the tobacco varieties, and soil microarthropods inhabiting the ridges displays greater sensitivity to tobacco variety changes compared to those in the furrows.
