Systematic reviews, along with other types of knowledge synthesis, are a type of research methodology that attempt to find all available evidence on a topic to help answer specific questions. Librarian involvement in systematic reviews is well established in the health sciences, and in recent years there has been growing awareness of, and literature about, librarians outside of health supporting systematic reviews. This study benchmarks librarian support of systematic reviews in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences (SHSS) by looking at the growth of demand for support, the disciplines requesting this kind of librarian support, and the specific types of support needed. It also examines what SHSS librarians need to be successful in this type of work, including administrative support and workload adjustments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current research has been carried out with the intention to analyze the level of user satisfaction with services and resources at the Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effcndi Library, Sindh Madrcssatul Islam University, Karachi. To collect appropriate data on variables of interest a questionnaire survey was designed and served over the sample population as a research instrument. Based on the nature of the study, survey questionnaire was composed. The study target population was 1,600 undergraduate/graduate students enrolled at all five departments of Sindh Madressatul Islam University and who uses the library services through registered email IDs. From every department eighty percent of the population was contacted with a request to participate in the study. From the entire total target population only 275 individuals participated as study sample. Statistical Package for Social Sciences, latest version was utilized. Results of the study exposed that though students were satisfied with the existing level of services and resources at library, however, there is more room for significant improvements regarding library services and resources. In-addition, findings of the study would significantly help in University and library Management collaboration to refocus their attention on the library improvement as recommended in the article. Bibliometric analysis is increasingly used to evaluate and compare research performance across geographical regions. However, the problem of missing information from author addresses has not attracted sufficient attention from scholars and practitioners. This study probes the missing data problem in the three core journal citation databases of Web of Science (WoS). Our findings reveal that from 1900 to 2015 over one-fifth of the publications indexed in WoS have completely missing information from the address field. The magnitude of the problem varies greatly among time periods, citation databases, document types, and publishing languages. The problem is especially serious for research in the sciences and social sciences published before the early 1970s and remains significant for recent publications in the arts and humanities. Further examinations suggest that many records with completely missing address information do not represent scholarly research. Full-text scanning of a random sample reveals that about 40% of the missing address articles have some address information that is not indexed in WoS. This study also finds that the problem of partially missing address information for U.S. research has diminished dramatically since 1998. Purpose -- This paper aims to describe the use of electronic resources and services provided at the social science library of Jimma University, Jimma. The paper is focused to find out the use of those resources by the students of information science and how frequently they are using, from where the information is accessed. Also, they have been requested about their preferences between an electronic and print journal format. Design/methodology/approach -- The questionnaire method is used for collecting the data from the undergraduate students of information science (2015/2016 batch). The questionnaire was distributed to 182 students, and the response rate 81.32 per cent was encouraging. Findings -- It has been found that the usage of e-journals is increasing; this is due to awareness among the students of information science about the e-resources and services. Owing to an easy access available at various places in the university, they are accessing these resources at hostels and departments more as compared to the library. Their visits to library have decreased. Research limitations/implications -- The study has been limited to Jimma University undergraduate students of information science only Practical implications -- It suggests for future improvised solutions. Originality/value -- The present paper will help other institutions to understand the need for library electronic resources and motivate them to update their resources in the larger interest of the students. The paper also indicates how a suitably designed survey can show the awareness and use of types of information services, in this case, e-journals. We propose a simple classroom experiment on speculative bubbles: the Bubble Game. This game is useful to discuss about market efficiency and trading strategies in a financial economics course, and about behavioral aspects in a game theory course, at all levels. The Bubble Game can be played with any number of students, as long as this number is strictly greater than one. Students sequentially trade an asset which is publicly known to have a fundamental value of zero. If there is no cap on asset prices, speculative bubbles can arise at the Nash equilibrium because no trader is ever sure to be last in the market sequence. Otherwise, the Nash equilibrium involves no trade. Bubbles usually occur with or without a cap on prices. Traders who are less likely to be last and have less steps of reasoning to perform to reach equilibrium are in general more likely to speculate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article highlights the opportunity that libraries have to transform and develop their services towards the management and exploitation of data. After setting the scene in the introduction, the article provides a definition of library data services and explains the meaning of term "data" in multiple settings. In order to prove that data services within libraries are not uncommon, the evolution of these types of services is analysed: from the initial social science data libraries to the current research data management services and data curation. This leads to expanding the role of data services as a strategic area for the analysis of the organizational knowledge, always led by libraries. Purpose – The purpose of this column is to provide several examples of libraries that have recognized the importance of freely offering a wide array of business resources to individuals and businesses. Norbert Leser, social philosopher, political scientist, historian and theorist of Austrian Socialism, known as a ,Leser' (English translation ,reader'), – this play on words on his name amused him greatly – was an avid library user. The library of the Vienna Chamber of Labour (Arbeiterkammer/AK) holds many volumes which he consulted when writing his seminal book „Zwischen Reformismus und Bolschewismus: der Austromarxismus als Theorie und Praxis”. This has become the standard work on the subject. In recognition of the importance of the AK in the writing of this book, he donated volumes to its library from his personal library on a regular basis from 1984 onwards. Libraries have to face the fact that the book version of certain publications (such as annually published statistical yearbooks) disappears or appears as an equal digital version, parallel to printed copies. Social science libraries may nowadays easily find that the most recent printed copies of some yearbooks on their shelves are 5-10 years old. As a consequence, users might ponder if they would like to be members of such obsolete libraries. As first, the study introduces the past and present of disseminating statistical information in Hungary. It analyses examples from both Hungary and the international scene, and presents digital alternatives of statistical yearbooks. In conclusion, it takes stock of the tasks and opportunities of subject librarians in the digital age, and argues that libraries and librarians continue to be inevitable for research and science. The Management & Economics Library at Purdue University began a major physical and conceptual renovation four years ago. The conceptual renovation involves a rethinking of library faculty and staff roles and responsibilities based on the library's and university's strategic directives. The LearnLab space is being used as a springboard to create new partnerships, to implement our new roles, and to transform the perspective of an academic library's present capability. This study examines the current state of business librarianship. What are the educational backgrounds of business library and information practitioners? Where and in what manner are they providing business librarianship? How do they interact with their peers? Is business librarianship a field which is attracting new librarians? Perhaps most importantly, are business librarians happy in their profession? Past articles have focused specifically on academic business librarians. Weeding collections of older materials in order to make room for newer materials is now an accepted part of librarianship. Accordingly, a consistent set of objective principles for weeding now exist. Applying these objective principles of weeding to older social sciences materials is problematic in light of the epistemological debate over how the social sciences are, or should be practiced. This article will first discuss the debate over the nature of the social sciences. It will then outline the objective principles of weeding. These principles will be then be applied to an older social scientific journal that is a candidate for weeding. In the mid-1980s, education and social science librarians began to gather information about libraries' management of test collections. This article looks at the circulation loan patterns represented in past research and compares it to results of a survey conducted by the authors. The survey also determined whether libraries are modifying their policies to provide broader access to psycho-educational test kits for distance education students. Circulation loan patterns reported in past studies are compared with current survey results to determine whether libraries modify their policies to improve access to psycho-educational test kits for online and distance education students. Succession planning, a strategy for developing leaders from within the company or organization, is a technique that could be useful to libraries. Libraries will soon be faced with more open positions because of retirements than we can fill. The dilemma is complicated by a shortage of younger, midcareer librarians and a shortage of new recruits into the profession. These openings will be primarily in leadership positions. This problem will affect libraries of all kinds including business libraries. One solution is to "grow your own" leaders by using succession planning techniques to identify staff with the interest and potential for upper-level positions, to determine the gaps in knowledge, and to set up training and mentoring programs so that they are ready to assume leadership positions in the near future. Leadership development programs focus on providing administrators with the technical skills of management and the transformative skills of leadership. Now approaching its tenth anniversary, the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL)/Harvard Leadership Institute has been successful in encouraging academic library administrators to explore the effectiveness of their own leadership and how it positions their libraries to face contemporary challenges. The UCLA Senior Fellows Program is a professional development program for senior-level academic librarians held biennially at the University of California, Los Angeles. This article reports on the results of interviews conducted during July-August 2007 with 11 library directors who had previously participated in the Senior Fellows Program. Participants were asked to identify the aspect(s) of the Senior Fellows Program that had been most valuable to them and to reflect on lessons learned, the impact of the program on their personal and professional development, and the support they received from faculty and cohort group members. This paper discusses a joint project of the American Library Association and the American Sociological Association. The goal of this collaboration is to guarantee that students of sociology, particularly sociology majors, develop strong information literacy skills during their undergraduate experience. The article talks about national standards for information literacy and how they relate to the sociology major. It presents examples for applying the sociology information literacy standards to course assignments and the sociology curriculum. We also provide suggestions for building linkages between sociology faculty members and social science librarians, as well as ways in which information literacy outcomes might be assessed in the sociology curriculum. The paper describes the application of UDC in subject indexing in the Library of Social Work Studies at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb. The author gives an overview of the field of social studies and the practice of social care and underlines characteristics of the literature in this new and fast changing field. The paper provides information on the initial implementation of the UDC in this special library and explains the aspects of its practical application. Some advantages and disadvantages in using UDC are analysed and a general evaluation of its suitablity for this type of library is given. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the economic impact of an employee internet management (ElM) system. Design/methodology/approach - The paper reviews previous research on economic justification. It implements an ElM system, sniffer, and firewall to monitor real-time sessions and to record blocked attempts. Findings - The study finds that management may introduce an ElM system as a productivity control tool and bandwidth management tool. Research limitations/implications - Impacts of backlash were measured by qualitative questionnaires, so there was a possibility of some aberration. Partial elements limited to monetary factors are used among the various economic factors. Practical implications - The paper proves that the overall impact of an ElM system has a positive value because filtering mechanisms cause users to lose access to few URLs containing useful information, saves users from various risk points and enhances labor productivity. The use of numeric data has historical significance in the research of many academic disciplines, but today it is increasing. Responses from academic business librarians to a questionnaire are the basis for this study that investigates interactions between academic business libraries and other local units supplying numeric data services. Special consideration is given to the coordination and promotion of data services between the business library and research data service centers. This pilot study reveals some interesting and surprising trends confronting academic libraries and research data centers.

The Library of the London School of Economics and Political Science is the largest library in the world devoted to the social sciences, with some four million items. In a major redevelopment project, the library's building, which also houses the LSE Research Laboratory, has been radically re-designed by Foster and Partners. Key features of the re-design include a central atrium with a glass dome and stepped helical ramp as well as a double height space on the lower ground floor. During the building programme, the library operated from temporary premises nearby, remaining open throughout two book moves. Describes the planning process involved in the redevelopment, the maintenance of services and the book moves. The article discusses the papers of the research programs including the Association of Southeast Asian Nation Economic Research Unit, the Regional Strategic Studies Program, and the Social Issues in Southeast Asia. The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies established the Southeast Asian Cultural Program (SEACUP) which was a documentary project located in the Institute's library. SEACUP was established by Dorothy Pelzer, an American architect, to collect Asian studies into a library. The techniques of collecting and archiving of SEACUP are discussed.

The article presents the author's comments on social science literature. The author feels that there are irreconcilable differences of opinion and approach, to say nothing of terminology, not only between one discipline and another but also among rival schools and factions within a discipline. It has been necessary to ignore the intellectual predispositions, both sympathetic and antipathetic, of specialists and to stress that the purpose of scheme for the arrangement of entries in bibliographies is solely to enable people, in spite of their different views, to find the material for which they search.

The article discusses the importance of online social networking on behavioral and social science libraries. The author highlighted the benefits that could be obtained from Web sites like YouTube, Facebook and LiveJournal. According to the author, for librarians in the behavioral and social sciences field working at small institutions where support for information technology is limited, the site YouTube could offer some advantages. The author also presented the benefits of the other sites mentioned above.

An introduction to the journal is presented in which the editor discusses an article on theories that surrounds library collection weeding in the social sciences by Jeffrey Matlak, the relationship between library users and library instruction and resources by Kate Zoellner, and the impact of information literacy instruction to the global understanding of students by Angela P. Whitehurst.

This article introduces the topics covered in the Vol. 9, No. 1, 2003 issue of the periodical "Journal of Business and Finance Librarianship" (JBFL). The author welcomes three new members of the Editorial Review Board. The "peer review" article in this issue of JBFL is a case study involving a methodology for improving research skills of undergraduate business students. Special features included in this issue of JBFL are a meeting report of the Academic Business Library Directors along with a statistical report that examines access to business and economic databases at more than thirty business libraries. The World Wide Web and Book and CD-ROM Review columns provide some new tools for conducting business research. The author invites ideas to be shared with the readership of JBFL.
