Native American horse racing has received little scholarly attention. Focussing on the Great Plains and the Southwest reveals that, far from being a diversion, it was a major focus for male competition for status and prestige. Since these concerns were at least as strong externally as internally, horse racing (and racehorse acquisition) formed part of a continuum of agonistic activities that also encompassed warfare. Moreover, the significance of races for the standing of individuals, men's societies, and tribal groups led to widespread use of protective medicines for enhancing equine performance and combating interference from opponents. Gambling formed part of this set of practices that collectively warrant describing Native American horse racing as a form of what Johan Huizinga termed 'sacred play'. For these reasons it encountered strong opposition from Euro-American authorities during the reservation era. Conversely, the persistence of Native American horse racing traditions via rodeo and Indian Relay racing attests to the enduring importance of the values they express. There has been controversy in the literature about the relationship of culture with emotional well-being for adolescents who are American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN). This article provides a careful summary and literature review of related studies. A key finding was that a sense of connection to culture was correlated with emotional well-being for adolescents who are AI/AN, whereas participation in cultural activities was associated with more mixed results. As part of my PhD practice-based research on Tlicho lands (a self-governed Indigenous region in Canada's Northwest Territories), drawing is being used to embody intangible cultural heritage (which includes activities such as oral history and the social practice of walking). Recent work to emerge from this research consists of two drawings created by Tlicho elders, and an animated film made of 900 graphite drawings referencing regional oral history. The process of rendering these drawings embodied experiences on the land that are repetitive, albeit transformative, such as walking or listening to multiple versions of a single story. The entanglement of continually moving lines, evident through the animation, provides a counter-narrative to colonial interpretations of the land -- particularly narratives constructed through Cartesian coordinate systems (on which computer graphics and the geometry of built environments are based). The article discusses the early modern color trade of vermilion in the Americas and especially in North America during the long eighteenth century. Topics include how competing colonial European powers used vermilion as a diplomatic gift to solidify military and commercial alliances with indigenous peoples, and the reasons why Vermilion failed to attract the attention of scholars as much as other pigments or materials of the eighteenth century did.

This article is a reinterpretation of the ethnohistorical literature on the Lakota or Western (Teton) Sioux from a Descolian animist perspective. Applying key insights from what has been called the "ontological turn," in particular, the dual notions of interiority and physicality and an extended notion of personhood that includes nonhumans as well as humans, this article demonstrates howa new animist framework can connect and articulate otherwise disparate and obscure elements of Lakota ethnography, offering new and exciting insights, along with the potential for a deeper understanding of traditional Lakota culture. By looking at how space and place can be used to shape Indigenous history based on Aboriginal ways of knowing, we can begin to explore how Indigenous philosophical and religious traditions have shaped their cultural, political, and economic traditions and rationalized their sense of land, property, and rights. New scholarship by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal scholars is pursuing this new and dynamic inquiry. In recent years, a number of cutting-edge studies have evaluated how place and space have impacted colonial historical events, with some scholars employing the epistemological frameworks of Indigenous societies and others focusing on how land disputes have shaped Canadian history more generally. This article is an evaluation of the evolution of the historical scholarship - some from historians, some not - as it relates to Indigenous societies, space and place, and the epistemological frameworks embedded within their cultural traditions. This paper considers the value of Hymesian ethnopoetics as a means of analysing everyday narrative in conditions of mobility and change. The paper offers an account of the development of ethnopoetics as a means to make visible and valorize narrative in the Native American oral tradition, and as a method of revealing culturally specific relations of form and meaning. Hymes' ethnopoetic approach viewed narrative structure as a reflection of a cultural tradition of meaning-making. Hymes' analysis proposed that traditional narrative was a culturally shaped way of speaking, and analysis of narrative structure could reveal and recreate culture. His orientation rested on an assumption that the culture of a group was more or less stable and fixed. This paper adopts an approach to analysis based on ethnopoetics, representing everyday narrative dramatically, organized not only as lines and verses, but also as scenes and acts. Representation in scenes and acts makes visible the dynamic nature of the narrative. The paper asks whether Hymes' ground-breaking work on ethnopoetics still has currency and purchase in 21st-century conditions of mobility, change, and unpredictability. Analysis of everyday narrative in a city market concludes that, notwithstanding the complexity of notions of 'culture' and 'language' in such conditions, ethnopoetics can be productively applied to everyday contexts for the analysis of narrative. Although colonial American spaces of genteel leisure, such as taverns, theaters, and coffeehouses, have recently received considerable scholarly attention, mineral spas have largely eluded historical analysis. Those historians who have studied colonial spas have used these spaces primarily to uncover the roots of American republicanism, technological development, and changing perceptions of early modern cleanliness. But America's mineral waters have more to reveal. In particular, these supposedly healing waters provide important insights into British imperialists' efforts at mediating seemingly contradictory notions of civilization and wilderness. Though a significant body of literature has shown that Europeans altered the natural world around them for personal gain, their interaction with mineral springs demonstrates how these imperialists adjusted themselves, as well as the environment, to suit their ideals of bodily health, scientific advancement, and imperial development. Thus, while mineral springs became key spaces to exploit both the natural world and Native American assets, the waters also became part of a larger civilizing mission dependent on Europeans' ability to modify their own principles and thrive in a strange New World. Social scientists have utilized daily time use studies as one method of understanding everyday lives. The bulk of this research, usually quantitative, identifies broad racial, ethnic and gender differences. Yet, certain groups and questions are typically excluded in daily time use research. One such group is American Indians. To address this lacuna, we look at the deeply discussed view that American Indians are closer to nature than other US ethnic groups. We use a nationally representative sample of individual daily time use (American Time Use Survey; n = 136,960) to look at leisure time outdoors. Our results show that American Indians report greater time spent outdoors but that this is only statistically significant for those who identify as exclusively American Indian (not for American Indians that are multi- and bi-racial). A case study is presented on the influence that classical education of Algonquians in a Christian Anglo-American education system on their social and cultural norms, including at Brothertown, Wisconsin during the second half of the 18th century. The social influence that Moor's Indian Charity School in Lebanon, Connecticut had on Algonquian culture is discussed. The impact that Indian Christian Separatism had on the Brothertown movement is also discussed.

The Ozark Highlands' karst topography of caves and hollows has provided refuge and escape for myriad peoples seeking to evade mainstream society throughout history, ranging from displaced Native Americans to countercultural back-to-the-landers. This ethnographic and ethnohistorical research moves beyond the popular misconception that the back-to-the-land movement merely represented an offshoot of the countercultural revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, and situates it within a deeper historical context. In this paper, I present the Arcadian evocations in various Ozark-related media and how they relate to homesteading in the region, and demonstrate the shared agrarian values among diverse waves of agrarian Ozark homesteaders, recent and historical. “More Destruction to These Family Ties” looks at the long history of non-Native intervention in the lives of Native American families. It maintains that the desire to educate and raise indigenous children culminated in the 1970s with a catastrophic quarter of Native American youth living away from their families and nations. This article argues that Native women activists were central to arresting the crisis; that they launched a multifaceted agenda to address challenges (rooted in colonialism) that indigenous families faced; and that they championed a framework that complicates existing narratives of women and activism in the United States during the 1970s. This paper summarizes the archaeological, historical, and linguistic evidence for relationships between the Huron-Wendat and the St. Lawrence Iroquoians. There is overwhelming archaeological and oral history evidence that Iroquoian groups living in the St. Lawrence River valley allied themselves with and were politically incorporated peacefully, in large numbers and over a long period of time, into the Huron-Wendat Confederacy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, effectively making them Huron-Wendat and giving weight to the Huron-Wendat knowledge that the St. Lawrence River valley is ancestral Huron-Wendat territory. As early as the mid-fifteenth century, St. Lawrence Iroquoian material culture appeared in north shore of Lake Ontario ancestral Huron-Wendat communities. At the mid-fifteenth-century Parsons site, for example, situated in what is today the city of Toronto, a possible St. Lawrence Iroquoian enclave was identified on the basis of a cluster of St. Lawrence Iroquoian ceramic vessels. Along with the Mantle site iron tool, thought to have been traded upstream from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, material culture from other sites also signals interaction (such as the presence of discoidal beads made of steatite on some north shore communities, the preliminary source analysis of which suggest a Jefferson County or more broadly eastern Ontario origin for the material). Marine shell and possible ivory artifacts on mid-fifteenth-century ancestral Huron-Wendat sites in the Oshawa area also point to east-west exchange patterns along the north shore of Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River valley/lower Ottawa River valley prior to European arrival in historicWendake. The Oshawa cluster of sites, which seems to disappear by the late fifteenth century, may have been one of the long-hypothesised north shore communities to move to the upper Trent River valley in the early sixteenth century. An overview of the sea level history of northern Olympic Peninsula, including the sea's higher than modern sea levels during the mid Holocene period, is provided.
