This study analyses the images of the future of Spanish secondary school students (n = 252) from two perspectives. First, from the relationship between representations of the personal future and the social future. Second, the potential influence of the specific training of Geography and History teachers in education for the future on the construction of these representations. From a descriptive, predictive‐correlational and relational design, the results obtained report the existence of significant positive correlations, high effect sizes and optimal statistical power between the ways in which students conceive the social future and their own personal future. They also show the existence of statistically differential proportions between the two representations, less optimistic and progressive when thinking about the future of society. Similarly, the results report evidence of higher probabilities of obtaining positive perceptions about the social future when teachers have previous training in education for the future. The findings also show the need to rethink the concept of the future, in close connection with historical‐temporal awareness, as the core of the aims of social science teaching. According to the eco-social education paradigm, landscape plays a key role as an identity object of study in the interaction between nature and society. The study seeks to assess a practical experience conducted among trainee teachers consisting in the systematized analysis of local and foreign degraded landscapes in Spain and Colombia, based on environmental, sustainability and global-citizenship literacies—guarantors of eco-social education. A mirror class methodology was implemented among 127 Spanish and Colombian trainee teachers. It comprised an online videocall exchange between different teaching groups. A quasi-experimental research methodology was followed, based on the didactic and statistical analysis of the trainee teachers' reports and a validated questionnaire. The findings reveal a global didactic acquisition of 2.9 points on a 4-scale evaluation range. The learning was higher in didactic tasks related to the landscape analysis and lower in comparative local-global analysis tasks. A statistically significant learning development of +0.8 points was found. The results suggest that the study of local landscapes captures interest and mirror classes easily bring distant realities closer, thus improving the eco-social knowledge and the feeling of an eco-social responsibility for global sustainability. While classroom discussion is often cherished as a cornerstone of effective social science teaching, knowledge on when and where discussions tend to turn deliberative is lacking. To make up for this lack of knowledge, the present study examined classroom discussion in three conditions: a whole-class condition, a small group condition, and a pair condition. The study made use of video observations from a classroom intervention to evaluate how each condition affected the deliberative quality of the discussion process. To this end, 585 student utterances were coded for aspects of deliberation using the Stromer-Galley observation manual. The results showed that both the small group and pair conditions promoted key aspects of deliberation compared to the whole-class condition. The small group condition generated the highest levels of contestation and engagement, whereas the pair condition generated the highest level of equality. While these results suggest that the deliberative quality of classroom discussion might sometimes benefit from the teacher's absence, more research is needed to determine the circumstances in which this is likely to be the case. Design/methodology/approach: The paper takes a decolonial-critical social science approach to explore the limit and test cases for decolonizing social science education, using two examples: a Social Theory course in Ireland and a global open educational project, Connected Sociologies. Findings: It explores three decolonial strategies for social science education: double translation, reverse tutelage, and double repair. It theorizes beyond these by thinking with a more expansive, speculative South African project of decolonial repair. Research limitations/implications: While the practical strategies for decolonizing social theory and broader, speculative ambitions for decolonial repair are not directly comparable, the contrasting loci enable critical, but hopeful reflection on possibilities for decolonizing social science education more broadly, responding to the limit case imposed by neoliberal academic restructuring.

Highlights: – Empirical insights into students’ ideas on globalisation in Germany. – Colonial and decolonial ideas in their ambivalences as the starting point for decolonial education processes. – (De-)coloniality is not only about the past but also about the present and the future. – (De-)coloniality is already in the classrooms but is rarely conceptualised in educational processes. Purpose: This paper highlights some insights into the results of the study on decolonial citizenship education (Kleinschmidt, 2021) to contribute to the decolonisation of citizenship education in Germany. Design/methodology/approach: The research is built on a sample of 44 interviews with students from the 9th grade in German schools, Hauptschule and Gymnasium. The interviews are interpreted using qualitative content analysis. Findings: In the students’ concepts of globalisation, migration, and culture, several different and entangled colonial and decolonial patterns were found. Research limitations/implications: The study is a solid starting point for discussions of citizenship education and provides fruitful insights. Nonetheless, at least in Germany, the research on this topic is at a very early stage. Practical implications: The findings are a starting point for discussing decolonial approaches to citizenship education, aiming for both a radical re-invention of the concept of the disciplinary field of citizenship education and contributing to the conceptualisation of citizenship educational practices advocating for a more just and less colonial world.

Highlights: – Capitalism is part of the colonial system, and growth is one of its ideological principles. – Critical views on growth and capitalism are related to more critical PBL projects. – Supporters of Degrowth are closer to decolonial perspectives in education. Purpose: We aim to locate degrowth approaches within decolonial social science education and to establish relationships between economic beliefs in the social representations of future teachers and their educational projections. Design/methodology/approach: Theoretical approaches are developed to pinpoint the topic and focus on teachers’ imaginaries concerning economic notions such as growth and degrowth. The social representations of teachers in training are analysed to explore their epistemological, formal, and decision-making implications. Findings: Critical views on growth and capitalism are related to acknowledging alternative economic paradigms and to a more critical, complex, action-oriented and justice-oriented projection of educational PBL. Supporters of degrowth are closer to decolonial perspectives in education. Practical implications: We should revise teacher training programmes to better train future teachers in decolonial perspectives. More emphasis on colonial and structural cause-effect complex dynamics of capitalism in socioenvironmental problems is required. The hegemony of neoliberal collective imaginaries should be questioned through social, historical and economic narratives.

Highlights: – A progressive reading of ESD offers opportunities to decolonise SSE. – SDG4, highlighting quality in education, should define the centre of gravity of the SDGs because it has a global and decolonial DNA. – ESD, in its genuine form, should be interpreted as a revolutionary paradigm change for rethinking schools as whole institutions and consequently for decolonising teaching. – Attempts in Germany to reform schools are in jeopardy due to the priority for comparative approaches to education, e.g., PISA. – To facilitate ESD within given system constraints, global justice offers an appropriate leitmotif to expand and globalise horizons and decolonise teaching practices in SSE. Purpose: The article offers a progressive reading of ESD with a teaching example to decolonise SSE despite constraints set by the school system. Design/methodology/approach: The article presents ESD’s idea of thought within ‘the big picture’ of global education. After that, a description of an expert group is given, tasked with developing a conceptual framework for SSE, commissioned by the school administration in Germany and critically reflected on amidst system constraints. Findings: Full-fledged reforms to rethink schools in the 21st century from scratch to efficiently decolonise and integrate ESD are required. Research limitations/implications: The last part of the article is limited in its description and critical reflection of the federal German example. Practical implications: It is recommended that the big picture in terms of promoting global and decolonial dimensions of ESD and facilitating a sustainable transition of schools for achieving the SDGs is kept in sight.

Inquiry and teaching with high levels of student activity are central to social science education, and research has shown the importance of scaffolding and other expressions of supportive structures in teaching (Christensen, 2021; Mathé, 2020). Nevertheless, there have been few studies documenting how actual teaching takes place and whether a teacher’s activities support the work of their students. This article, part of QUINT—Quality in Nordic Teaching, drew on video observations from 16 lower secondary social science classrooms in Denmark and Norway. We began by using the Protocol for Language Arts Teaching Observation (PLATO; Grossman, 2019) to identify the extent of teacher scaffolding practices. From this, we analysed the scaffolding to understand what kinds can be observed in social science education, with a specific focus on inquiry-based teaching. Although we identified scaffolding in a minority of lesson segments, what we did observe was related to a number of skills and strategies, both generic and specific to social science education. We concluded by identifying the strong potential in developing scaffolding practices related to social science inquiry further, before discussing implications and opportunities based on our findings. Social scientific reasoning (SSR) is essential to social science education and to a democratic society as a whole. Students are challenged to analyze and reason about social problems such as social inequality, crime, and poverty. However, students experience difficulties with SSR. This study addresses the research question: Which design principles can guide teachers in designing lessons that promote social scientific reasoning? In this design-based research, four social science teachers employed a conceptualization of SSR and its levels together with three initial design principles to develop curriculum materials and activities. These design principles and curriculum materials were piloted in two secondary education classes (9th and 10th grades) and evaluated by four social science teachers, four social science teacher educators and 90 students. The study produced six design principles that can promote students' SSR. In combination with the curriculum materials, those design principles can help develop teachers' pedagogical content knowledge and guide the design of tasks and units that develop SSR. Classroom discussion constitutes a unique opportunity for student deliberation and is often believed to be a desirable attribute of Social Science teaching. Yet, despite its potential, large scale observational research on discussion in Nordic classrooms is scarce. To address this shortcoming, the present study investigated the prevalence and contexts of classroom discussion in a Nordic sample of 375 teaching segments (each lasting 15 min). The sample was gathered through video observations, and discussion was measured by an element from the Protocol for Language Arts Teaching Observations. Discussion was present in 39.2% of the investigated segments but was very unequally distributed across classes. While this study found classroom discussion to be most likely during small group work, in the middle of a 45-min lesson, and in schools with high achieving students, more research is needed to determine the sources of inequality in social science students' opportunities for classroom deliberation. Democratic school systems are expected to equip students with the knowledge, abilities, and attitudes needed for life as citizens, particularly through social science education. Disciplinary knowledge, derived from the academic counterparts to school subjects, is essential in developing these skills. However, research has also emphasized the importance of life-world perspectives, where students' experiences are included and taken seriously in teaching. This study suggests that the theory of (civic) narrative competence can function as a bridge between the disciplinary domain and the life-world domain in its focus on how students' civic reasoning can be developed through teaching. The article uses narrative theory to explore how the students' civic narratives changed and became more nuanced after a teaching segment focusing on social and political trust. In the article, we demonstrate how the students' personal experiences colored their interpretations and orientations before the teaching segment and how their civic narratives were developed through the implemented teaching, which provided them with concepts, a theoretical model, and empirical examples. We found that the students did not discard previous perceptions after the teaching segment, but integrated them into their new knowledge and orientations, thus integrating the life-world and disciplinary domains. Purpose: Policy-oriented responsibility initiatives are institutional attempts to make innovations more responsible. One such initiative is offered by the European Commission's responsible research and innovation (RRI) keys (public engagement, gender equality, science education, open access and ethics). This study is conducted in the context of an EU Horizon 2020 project and focuses on the introduction of RRI keys to innovation projects of the additive manufacturing (AM) industry. This study aims to understand how these RRI keys are perceived and adopted by industry project partners. Design/methodology/approach: The authors use an ethnographic study based on "participant observation", supported by interviews and workshops with AM industry experts. In particular, the analysis covers two specific innovation use cases – one in the medical field, and second in the automotive field, in the context of the EU project. The analysis, based on ethnographic data, is inductive and interpretative. Findings: The authors take a critical approach towards the implementation of RRI policy keys as measurable indicators, and argue that they are not easy tools to implement. The authors portray how RRI keys were understood and welcomed by industrial organisations, and how their implementation raised controversies. The authors also found that RRI keys are difficult to understand. They are not easy to measure and report, and this contrasts with earlier proposals of how RRI keys should be governed or implemented. The governance, meaning the dialogue between stakeholders both internal and external to the organisation, was time-consuming and required constant organisational learning. Originality/value: Due to the insightful ethnographic methodology, the authors could well underline the faults and difficulties of the application of policy-oriented responsibility in innovation. The findings illustrate the difficulty of implementing RRI in an industry that mainly operates business-to-business. This can help future policymakers to find more successful ways of pushing industry and innovators to be more responsible. In most Western democracies, there is an ongoing discussion on the role of education, particularly in times of increasingly polarized political views, leading to democratic erosion and social unrest. Citizens have been described as living in echo chambers, relying on, and often receiving, information that confirms their own world views and political ideas. In this climate, education has been emphasized as an important antidote to provide students with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to strengthen democracy and social cohesion. In most cases, this assignment is primarily tasked with subjects that can be considered political education, such as social studies, civics or social science education. However, there is no consensus on what kind of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values students need to fulfil a "good political education". Historically, there has been a rift between advocates of progressive ideas such as political deliberation and those who favor an emphasis on disciplinary-based knowledge. The latter perspective has been, for some time now, highlighted in educational sciences through Michael Young's concept of powerful knowledge, where knowledge from academic disciplines is emphasized in shaping youth into critical thinkers on social and political issues. This article critically examines the ideas of powerful knowledge and its potential for political education in secondary school. An important argument is that powerful knowledge, or disciplinary thinking, is necessary for a good political education but not sufficient in its own right. Social science education aims to enable people to acquire the knowledge and abilities necessary to lead a normal social life. However, social science is often neglected in basic education compared with languages and mathematics, thus affecting students' learning motivation and achievements. In this study, a digital game-based review system was designed for fourth-grade students in Taiwan taking a social science course. The students could review the unit content through the completion of game tasks. The concepts of the forgetting curve, hierarchy of learning, and formative assessment were incorporated into the game design to solidify memory and optimize learning effectiveness. The effects of the game on learning effectiveness, motivation, attitude, and interest were investigated, and learning behavior patterns were assessed through lag sequential analysis. The problem of dehumanization in education is still felt by students in the global era with rapid technological developments. Thus causing a generation of moral value crises. This study aims to find out how the relevance of social studies education to the independent learning curriculum with the thoughts of Ki Hadjar Dewantara. The research method uses the library method with books and articles from journals as sources. Data collection techniques using literature, coding, and recording. This research has findings that IPS Education as a social science discipline has a high social responsibility in upholding democratic values, to create equality and justice in the educational environment. So that all students can enjoy freedom during the learning process. In line with the concept of an independent curriculum which provides opportunities for students to choose and determine methods in the learning process. Relevant to Ki Hadjar Dewantara's thought that education must humanize humans, so students are not oppressed by being dominated by teachers in the learning process. According to Ki Hadjar Dewantara, the concept of independence does not mean freedom to do as you please, but freedom based on order and respect for the rights of others. Independence here does not only apply to students but also applies to educators so that the education and learning process takes place humanely. Social studies education with democratic values and the concept of independence from Ki Hadjar Dewantara has indeed been fully realized in the currently ongoing independent learning curriculum, to achieve education in Indonesia that promotes humanism and justice. Purpose: The article explores how the tension between embracing and scrutinising democracy can be productively overcome through social science teaching about democracy that focuses on trust as a subject content. Design/methodology/approach: Empirical materials were collected through focus group interviews before and after an inquiry-based teaching segment on trust, and the materials were analysed qualitatively through three grounded themes. Findings: It is argued that working with the displacement of subject content in inquiry-based teaching about democracy enhances the possibilities for students to deepen their knowledge about democracy, while enabling them to scrutinise the democratic system critically. Research limitations/implications: The article reports from a small-scale study of four classes in two upper secondary schools in Sweden, and the study provides tentative observations and conclusions that should be investigated further in future research. Practical implications: The article shows how trust as a subject content can contribute to problematising students’ understandings of democracy, and how the displacement of content can be important in formulating compelling questions and in designing inquiries on democracy.

Cancer is a serious health challenge which comes with severe pain, financial stress, emotional stress, fear of loss of life amongst others. Music therapy is one of the coping strategies that cancer patients need to stay strong during and after treatment. This integrative review study analyzed existing literature on the efficacy of music interventions for people with cancer. It also highlighted the implications for music education and social science education. This study affirmed that music therapy is effective in helping cancer patients cope with pain, depression and other emotional and psychological issues they face, based on the reviewed literature. When an emotionally heated discussion erupts in the social science classroom, it can bring the teachers and students into a topic or question that none of them had foreseen. Within the research field of social science education there is a growing interest for these unexpected teaching situations. The aim of this theoretical article is to further develop didactical theory of the unexpected in social science education with an emphasis on the didactical why-question. By drawing on Hannah Arendt’s theory of the subject and action, the article outlines a perspective on the unexpected in social science teaching. This perspective highlights how students’ actions can be understood as a distinct revealing of the individual that is unique, risky, and unexpected. The article puts this Arendtian perspective in relation to the citizenship ideal of the “the reflective spectator” that has been formulated within the research field. The article ends with a discussion on how to understand the conflict between different ideals of citizenship in the research field of social science education.

Contributing to secondary students’ perspective-taking is one of the main purposes of social science education in school, closely related to the democratic mandate. Previous literature has distinguished between interpersonal and academic perspective-taking, both deriving from theories on social perspective-taking (Gehlbach et al., 2012; Sandahl, 2020). The purpose of this article is to argue for and discuss a framework for facilitating academic perspective-taking in secondary social science education. The framework combines an existing model of perspective-taking with recent deliberative and agonistic democratic theory to integrate disciplinary perspectives, students’ per­spectives and perspectives from broader social and political debates and processes. In presenting the framework, I argue that and discuss how perspectives from deliberative and agonistic theory can contribute to and have different implications for social science classroom practice in secondary school. To contribute with practical implications of the article’s theoretical contributions to social science didactics research, I outline some didactic opportunities for working with perspective-taking, focusing on the specific purpose of the activity.

This study aims to describe components and levels of upper secondary social science students' reasoning about social problems. We consulted conceptualizations of social scientific reasoning in sociology textbooks and social science education literature, analyzed student papers, and conducted focus groups with social science teachers and teacher educators to define social scientific reasoning by proficiency levels and identify common flaws in students' reasoning. The papers were written by upper secondary social science students from eight schools in the Netherlands. We defined social scientific reasoning in terms of three components (describing, explaining, and solving problems) and five reasoning activities (causal analysis; use of social scientific concepts, models, and theories; use of evidence; use of perspectives and reflections on them; and comparing). We described these reasoning activities in three proficiency levels supported by practical examples and rubrics for students' reasoning. These insights can inform teachers and teacher educators in monitoring students' progression and designing teaching materials and activities that can promote students' social scientific reasoning. Methodology: Phenomenography is used in the analysis of 155 student essays, to identify different ways of analysing societal power issues. Findings: When conducting a qualified analysis of a societal power issue, it is crucial that students discern that power is tied to an agent, that power is exercised through agency in specific contextual power arenas, and that they understand how power is relative to the power of other agents in the same arena. Research limitations: The study focuses on Swedish upper secondary students. Comparisons with other groups of learners are welcomed. Practical implications: The critical aspects identified should be used as a basis for teaching designs. This exploratory study investigates how the use of subject-specific educative curriculum materials in a professional development program contributes to the professional growth of Dutch social science teachers in teaching social scientific reasoning. Teachers' professional growth (N = 10) was examined using pre- and post-interviews and questionnaires. The analysis focused on changes in teachers' knowledge, beliefs, and instructional practice. The results indicate that teachers developed a deeper understanding of the complexity, difficulty, and subject-specific nature of social scientific reasoning. Purpose: This paper explores social media practices with an exemplarily focus on constructions of space and social movements. It aims at identifying prospects for social science education under digital conditions regarding the reconfiguration of content and possibilities for digital literacy. Approach: By reviewing and summarizing popular strands of discussion on the application of social media practices in constructions of spaces and social movements, we identify common didactical themes from an educational perspective. Subsequently, we discuss social networks as real-world learning contexts in light of creative practices. Findings: Building on this, we derive theoretical implications for social science education for teaching and learning within social networks with a special focus on creativity. Following this, we present implications for social science literacy as well as digital literacy, which are two sides of the same coin. Practical implications: Finally, we present implications for future research and outline prospects for a future social science education.

This study aims to analyze a meta-concept of historical thinking - historical evidence/sources, their reliability, and scientific method of analysis - in lower and upper secondary students from three schools in Zaragoza (Spain), and compare the results from the two stages of education to determine if there are levels of progression in historical education. The sample was made up of 231 students and the research was descriptive and qualitative in its methods, employing content analysis to analyze data and an ad hoc questionnaire to collect data. The results point to the existence of levels of knowledge, understanding, and historical and critical thinking that, while different, are limited and close to each other. The data analysis indicates that historical education is still at an early stage in terms of implementing historical thinking processes, necessary in 21st-century education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The paper provides an overview of the current state of school social science education in Ukraine, whose development is considered in the context of its internal and external challenges. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis of the regulatory documents, school social science curriculum and course syllabi as well as publications and interviews with the stakeholders are the methods applied to identify the mission, content and current challenges of social science education. Findings: The underlying concept is based on universal human, European and national values, respect for Ukrainian traditions and the traditions of other cultures and ethnic groups, principles of democracy, human rights and freedoms. Being a dynamic area of education, school social science is undergoing a transformation under the New Ukrainian School reform focusing on competency based integrative approach to education. Despite the widespread use of whiteboard animations in both academic and informal settings, little evidence exists about their efficacy and impact on learner experiences, especially in non-STEM fields such as the social sciences. This study examined the effects of whiteboard animations againstthree other instructional formats on comprehension, measured by multiple choice questions and an open-ended summary question, and subjective experiences measured by Likert scale items. In a randomised experiment, Amazon Mechanical Turk participants (N = 299) viewed one of two social science lectures in one of four instructional formats: whiteboard animations, narrated slides, on-stage lecture, or audio/narration alone. Data was analysed using a series of ANOVA tests. Results showed that the whiteboard animation group answered significantly more questions than those who learned with on-stage lectures or narrated slides. Whiteboard animation and audio only groups also reported more enjoyment of, and engagement with, the lessons compared to the other groups. Findings contribute to the body of knowledge by providing evidence on the effectiveness of instructional materials when learning example social science topics. Implications for practice or policy: • Considering on-stage lectures and narrated slides are commonly used video formats in online education, practitioners should consider using different lecture formats (e.g., audio only) when teaching social science subjects. • Online course developers may consider using the whiteboard animations to enhance student learning outcomes. Purpose: This report provides an overview of social science education in primary and secondary education in Sweden with the purpose of introducing the international research community to policy-related issues concerning citizenship education, educational institutions and the scholarly state of the art. The principal topics are: a context of Sweden and its educational setting, the current policy documents and upcoming reforms, the state of teaching and teacher education, and the state of the art of Swedish social science education theory and research. Findings: Social science education holds a strong position as the main agent of citizenship education in Swedish schools and is a mandatory subject in every school year. The current and upcoming syllabi both emphasise disciplinary knowledge as well as citizenship education. Sweden has a growing community of researchers, but this community is somewhat fragmented because researchers originate from different disciplines.

Interdisciplinary teaching and learning (ITL), also termed cross-curricular teaching and learning, and curricular integration, is a prevailing trend among K-12 educational practitioners and policymakers. However, with the exclusion of specific disciplinary combinations such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) or Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), the empirical scholarship on ITL in K-12 settings is unsystematic, leading to difficulties in knowledge integration. In this article, we take stock of the existing empirical literature on ITL at the K-12 level within the humanities, arts, and social sciences, examining how educational scholars have understood and implemented ITL in peer-reviewed research articles. We show how existing scholarship on ITL includes a broad range of definitions and conceptual framings of interdisciplinarity; discuss the portrayal of the process for designing and implementing ITL curricular units; and categorize the scholarly objectives of ITL research. We conclude by offering recommendations to guide the future development of this burgeoning field of study. • Interest in interdisciplinary teaching and learning (ITL) among educational scholars is growing. • Interdisciplinary knowledge can extend disciplinary boundaries and/or connect multiple disciplines. • ITL has been understood by educational scholars in cognitive and sociocultural terms. • K-12 ITL can advance knowledge acquisition, student growth, and collaboration among teachers. This study investigates the influence of social media on time management of Social Science Education students in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The study involved all 312 Social Science Education students in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Data was collected with a 24 items questionnaire. Two research questions and six hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Mean and ANOVA were used to analyse the data collected. The findings of the study revealed that Social science Education students manage their time very well, social media influence time management of Social Science Education students in a very low extent and that there is no significant differences of program unit, age, students’ level of study, residential status and gender on time management among others. Based on the findings, the study recommends that students should make their school work a priority and put their phone on silence when reading to avoid distractions among others.
