Introduction Recruiting special populations to smoking cessation trials is challenging and approaches beyond in-clinic recruitment may be beneficial. This secondary analysis of data from a smoking cessation RCT for individuals with a history of cervical cancer or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) explored differences associated with in-clinic vs. online recruitment. Aims and Methods Participants were recruited from clinics within a university-based NCI-designated cancer center (n  = 87) and online nationally via Facebook (n  = 115). Baseline measures included sociodemographics, smoking history, and cancer or CIN history. Study retention and smoking abstinence were assessed 12 months post-baseline. Group differences in baseline characteristics were evaluated. Retention and abstinence were evaluated while controlling for group differences and predictors. Results Participants recruited online (vs. in-clinic) had higher educational attainment (p  = .01) and health literacy (p  = .003). They were more likely to have CIN versus cancer, to be further from the time of diagnosis, and to have completed active treatment (p values < .001). While controlling for these group differences and independent predictors, retention was higher among participants recruited online (log-likelihood χ2(1) = 11.41, p  < .001). There were no recruitment differences in self-reported (p  = .90) or biochemically confirmed smoking abstinence (p  = .18). Conclusions Compared to individuals recruited in-person, individuals recruited online were more educated, had higher health literacy, and presented with a different clinical profile (ie, more likely to have CIN vs. cancer and to have completed active treatment). There were few differences in participant characteristics between recruitment approaches, and no differences on any smoking-related variables. Online recruitment has the potential to improve enrollment of cancer survivors in smoking cessation trials. Implications People with a history of CIN or cervical cancer recruited to a smoking cessation RCT online (vs. in-clinic) were more likely to have a diagnosis of CIN versus cancer and were more educated and health literate. Participants recruited online were more likely to be retained in the study and there were no differences in smoking abstinence rates at 12 months. Incorporating online recruitment increased the reach of tobacco treatment efforts to a larger and more diverse sample. This could reduce the burden of tobacco-related disease, improve CIN and cancer treatment outcomes, and reduce secondary malignancies and morbidity among this underserved group. Background: Evidence on the prevalence of smoking in China remains insufficient, with most previous studies focusing on a single region. However, smoking prevalence exhibits significant inequalities across the entire country. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of tobacco prevalence across the country, taking into account spatial inequalities. Methods: The data used in this study were collected in 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, and 4 municipalities directly under the central government in 2022. Large population survey data were used, and a Bayesian geostatistical model was employed to investigate smoking prevalence rates across multiple spatial domains. Findings: Significant spatial variations were observed in smokers and exposure to secondhand smoke across China. Higher levels of smokers and secondhand smoke exposure were observed in western and northeastern regions. Additionally, the autonomous region of Tibet, Shanghai municipality, and Yunnan province had the highest prevalence of smokers, while Tibet, Qinghai province, and Yunnan province had the highest prevalence of exposure to secondhand smoke. Conclusion: We have developed a model-based, high-resolution nationwide assessment of smoking risks and employed rigorous Bayesian geostatistical models to help visualize smoking prevalence predictions. These prediction maps provide estimates of the geographical distribution of smoking, which will serve as strong evidence for the formulation and implementation of smoking cessation policies. Background Methods Results Conclusion Rosacea can be seen in many patients nowadays, and the related causes are complex. Despite a certain association between smoking and rosacea being reported by several studies, the actual causality has not been established for the possible bias and confounders.We used Mendelian randomization (MR) to evaluate a potential causal effect of smoking on rosacea risk. Statistics on smoking and rosacea were obtained from the FinnGen project and Neale Lab Consortium. The causal association was assessed by multiple methods including inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses were also conducted to address pleiotropy, along with the leave‐one‐out method.R version 4.2.3 was applied for the analyses.The IVW estimation revealed that previous smoking has a deleterious effect on rosacea (odds ratio [OR] = 6.7729, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.5691–29.2356, p = 0.0104). By contrast, there was no statistically relationship between current smokers and rosacea (OR = 0.6180, 95% CI = 0.0605–6.3094, p = 0.6847). Results were similar in the analysis based on the weighted median method (previous smoking: OR = 8.6297, 95% CI = 1.0131–73.5071, p = 0.0486; current smoking: OR = 0.2896, 95% CI = 0.0106–7.9132, p = 0.4627). The stability of the causal effect estimates was supported by several sensitivity analyses and the leave‐one‐out method.Our MR study found support forrosacea risk and previous smoking. Although no evidence was found to increase the risk of rosacea in current smokers, to prevent various diseases associated with smoking, the public should be encouraged to avoid smoking at the very beginning. Up to now, almost all existing methods for joint modeling survival data and longitudinal data rely on parametric/semiparametric assumptions on longitudinal covariate process, and the resulting inferences critically depend on the validity of these assumptions that are difficult to verify in practice. The kernel method-based procedures rely on choices of kernel function and bandwidth, and none of the existing methods provides estimate for the baseline distribution in proportional hazards model. This article proposes a proportional hazards model for joint modeling right censored survival data and intensive longitudinal data taking into account of within-subject historic change patterns. Without any parametric/semiparametric assumptions or use of kernel method, we derive empirical likelihood-based maximum likelihood estimators and partial likelihood estimators for the regression parameter and the baseline distribution function. A recent genome-wide association study of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) identified new AMD-associated risk variants. These variants now can be incorporated into an updated polygenic risk score (PRS). This study aimed to assess the performance of an updated PRS, PRS2023, in an independent cohort of older individuals with retinal imaging data and to compare performance with an older PRS, PRS2016. Cross-sectional study. A total of 4175 participants of European ancestry, 70 years of age or older, with genotype and retinal imaging data. We used logistic regression models and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) to assess the performance of PRS2023 compared with PRS2016. AMD status and severity were graded using color fundus photography. Association of PRS2023 and PRS2016 with AMD risk at baseline. At enrollment among 4175 participants, 2605 participants (62.4%) had no AMD and 853 participants (20.4%), 671 participants (16.1%), and 46 participants (1.1%) had early, intermediate, and late-stage AMD, respectively. More than 27% of the participants with a high PRS2023 (top quartile) had intermediate or late-stage AMD, compared with < 15% for those in the middle 2 quartiles and less than 13% for those in the lowest quartile. Both PRS2023 and PRS2016 were associated significantly with AMD after adjustment for age, sex, smoking status, and lipid levels, with increasing odds ratios (ORs) for worsening AMD grades. PRS2023 outperformed PRS2016 (P = 0.03 for all AMD and P = 0.03 for late AMD, DeLong test comparing AUC). PRS2023 was associated with late-stage AMD with an adjusted OR of 5.05 (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.41–7.47) per standard deviation. The AUC of a model containing conventional or nongenetic risk factors and PRS2023 was 91% (95% CI, 87%–95%) for predicting late-stage AMD, which improved 12% over the model without the PRS (AUC, 79%; P < 0.001 for difference). A new PRS, PRS2023, for AMD outperforms a previous PRS and predicts increasing risk for late-stage AMD (with stronger association for more severe imaging-confirmed AMD grades). Our findings have clinical implications for the improved prediction and risk stratification of AMD. Introduction: The outbreak of a global pandemic like COVID-19 has highlighted significant distress around mental health. The burden of mental health issues like anxiety and depression requires evidence-based intervention, especially in low-income settings like Nepal. The study aims to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression and the factors associated with it among hypertensive patients. Materials and methods: The quantitative cross-sectional study design was used for this study. The study was conducted among 374 samples from selected wards of Kathmandu Metropolitan using a convenience sampling technique. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using a structured interview schedule. A Chi-square test was used to identify the statistical significance between dependent and independent variables. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with anxiety and depression. Results: The prevalence of anxiety and depression among hypertensive patients during the COVID-19 pandemic was 27.8% and 24.3% respectively. According to the results of bivariate logistic regression analysis, smoking/tobacco consumption, staying in quarantine, positive COVID-19 test result, history of COVID-19 positive in the family, History of death due to COVID-19 in the family, visiting a hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic appeared as influencing factors of both anxiety and depression. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that COVID-19 has a substantial effect on the mental health of hypertensive patients. This study highlights the need to develop early intervention and coping strategies among this population to minimize the negative impact of COVID-19 on their mental health and well-being. Background: The results of several studies assessing the effect of the glutathione S-transferase class Mu 1 (GSTM1) null variant on the genetic susceptibility of tobacco-related cancers have been conflicting. In this work, we aim to identify the impact of the deletion of GSTM1 on lung cancer risk among smokers. Methods: This study was conducted on 20 patients diagnosed with primary lung cancer and 20 healthy individuals as a control group. They were subject to full medical history taking, complete clinical examination, and GSTM1 genotyping by PCR. Results: Both studied groups were matched for age, sex, and smoking status. No statistically significant difference was exhibited between the frequency of GSTM1 positive and GSTM1 null in the studied population. No risk of lung cancer associated with GSTM1 null genotype was demonstrated between the patients and control group (n = 14/20 cases) (p = 0.110, OR = 2.852, 95% CI 0.777–10.467). Additionally, there was no association between the risk of lung cancer and the presence of the gene either in smokers (p = 1, OR = 1.8 and 95% CI 0.124–26.196) or non-smokers; (p = 0.063, OR = 4.4 and 95% CI 0.889–21.78). No statistically significant risk was found between the frequencies of GSTM1 null and the various histopathological types of lung malignancy. Conclusion: The results of this work demonstrated no association between the occurrence of the GSTM1 null variant, even when stratified for smoking status, and the risk of lung cancer. After the recommendation of computed tomography as a routine procedure for lung cancer screening, an increasing number of young adults have been diagnosed with pulmonary ground-glass opacity (GGO). Up to 63% of pulmonary nodules with a GGO component can be malignant. Since young cancer patients have limited exposure to environmental mutagens, they have special characteristics and needs. This study sought to compare the clinicopathological characteristics of young and old patients with GGO-associated lung adenocarcinoma (GGO-LUAD). Clinicopathological data from 203 patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery between January 2018 and April 2020 for pulmonary GGO component nodules were reviewed. Lung nonmucinous adenocarcinoma patients younger than 40 years old and older than 40 years old were enrolled: 103 patients ≤ 40 years old and 100 patients > 40 years old. The relevant clinicopathological features, including sex, smoking status, tumor size, pathological characteristics, radiographic features and prognosis of pulmonary nodules, were evaluated. Univariate analyses were applied for comparisons between groups. The differences in baseline characteristics (sex, smoking status, tumor location) between the different age groups were not significant. Young patients were more likely to have tumors < 1 cm in size, while older patients predominantly had tumors > 2 cm in size. The mean percentage of invasive adenocarcinoma was greater in the elderly group. Young and older patients seemed to have similar subtypes of adenocarcinoma (p > 0.05) but had different degrees of differentiation (p < 0.001). The 3-year overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) of the young group were 100% and 99.03%, respectively, while the 3-years OS and RFS of the older group were 99% and 98%, respectively. Our work revealed that young patients with malignant pulmonary nodules and GGOs have distinct pathological subtypes. Patients with GGOs of different ages have different clinicopathological characteristics. The 3-year prognosis of young patients with malignant pulmonary nodules with GGOs is satisfactory. Objective: Despite the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) program in Iran, the regulation of second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure—an often-overlooked hazard—, still requires improvement. We employed a multi-center case-control study to investigate the association between exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) from various tobacco products (cigarettes, water-pipes, pipes, and chopogh), opium use, and the risk of lung cancer. Method: We included 627 lung cancer cases and 3477 controls. Exposure to SHS tobacco and SHS opium was collected through a questionnaire. We used mixed-model logistic regressions to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Result: Among the overall population exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke (SHTS), the odds ratio (OR) compared to those never exposed was 1.35 (95% CI: 1.08–1.71). Never smokers who were ever exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke (SHTS) had 1.69-fold risk of lung cancer compared to those who were never exposed (95% CI: 1.13–2.52). Exposure to SHTS between 2–3 per day (OR = 2.27, 95% CI: 1.13–4.53) and more than three hours per day (OR = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.20–4.37) can increase the risk of lung cancer compared with the no exposure group (P-trend <0.01). We did not observe any association between exposure to second-hand opium smoke (SHOS) and the risk of lung cancer, either in the overall population or among never-smokers. Conclusion: Our study estimates the impact of second-hand tobacco smoke (SHTS) on lung cancer risk in both the overall population and never-smokers. Additional studies are required to evaluate the association between exposure to second-hand smoke from opium and other type of tobacco, including water-pipe and the risk of lung cancer. Aim: To prospectively assess the association of smoking timing with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and examine whether smoking amount or genetic susceptibility might modify the relationship. Materials and Methods: A total of 294 815 participants without diabetes from the UK Biobank, including non‐smokers and smokers with data on the time from waking to first cigarette, were included. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the association between smoking timing and the risk of incident T2D. Results: During a median follow‐up time of 12 years, a total of 9937 incident cases of T2D were documented. Compared with non‐smokers, a shorter time from waking to first cigarette was significantly associated with a higher risk of incident T2D (P for trend <.001). In the fully adjusted model, the hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence interval) associated with smoking timing were 1.46 (1.17–1.81) for more than 2 hours, 1.51 (1.21–1.87) for 1–2 hours, 1.58 (1.34–1.85) for 30–60 minutes, 1.86 (1.57–2.21) for 5–15 minutes and 2.01 (1.60–2.54) for less than 5 minutes. We found that even among those who reported being light smokers, those with the shortest time from waking to first cigarette had a 105% higher risk of T2D with an HR of 2.05 (1.52–2.76), which was comparable with heavy smokers. The genetic risk score for T2D did not modify this association (P‐interaction =.51). Patients with certain psychiatric disorders have increased lung cancer incidence. However, establishing a causal relationship through traditional epidemiological methods poses challenges. Available summary statistics of genome-wide association studies of cigarette smoking, lung cancer, and eight psychiatric disorders, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, depression, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, insomnia, neuroticism, and schizophrenia (range N: 46,350-1,331,010) were leveraged to estimate genetic correlations using Linkage Disequilibrium Score Regression and assess causal effect of each psychiatric disorder on lung cancer using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) models, comprising inverse-variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger, pleiotropy residual sum and outlier testing (MR-PRESSO), and a constrained maximum likelihood approach (cML-MR). Significant positive correlations were observed between each psychiatric disorder and both smoking and lung cancer (all FDR < 0.05), except for the correlation between autism and lung cancer. Both univariable and the cML-MA MR analyses demonstrated that liability to schizophrenia, depression, ADHD, or insomnia was associated with an increased risk of overall lung cancer. Genetic liability to insomnia was linked specifically to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), while genetic liability to ADHD was associated with an elevated risk of both SCC and small cell lung cancer (all P < 0.05). The later was further supported by multivariable MR analyses, which accounted for smoking. Participants were constrained to European ancestry populations. Causal estimates from binary psychiatric disorders may be biased. • Most families with eligible children aged 0–3 did not apply for public ECE in New Orleans. • ECE enrollment is a multistep process, with potential enrollees lost at each step. • Text-message notices raised application rates by 33 % but did not affect enrollment. • The marginal cost of these texts was less than $0.50 per additional submitted application. Enrolling in publicly funded early childhood programs in the U.S. often requires families to navigate a complex, multistep process. Families must pick a program, apply, verify their eligibility, and enroll. Prior research shows that families that complete this process tend to be advantaged relative to eligible non-applicants. In this study, we illuminate the enrollment pathway in New Orleans, showing that many would-be enrollees are lost at each step along the way. Next, we examine the effects of an information intervention that aimed to help families with the "apply" step. We find that a simple text-message intervention increased application rates by 33 %. However, due to leaks at subsequent steps, the intervention had no effect on enrollment rates. Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS, previously referred to as sluggish cognitive tempo) is a unique set of symptoms distinct from ADHD inattentive symptoms that appear to be independently associated with neuropsychological and psychosocial outcomes in community and ADHD-specific samples of youth. However, our understanding of CDS in individuals with chronic or complex medical conditions is limited. The current systematic review is the first to summarize the literature on CDS prevalence rates and associations with neurocognitive and functional outcomes in youth with medical conditions, and to discuss areas of future research to guide clinical intervention. We conducted literature searches across four major databases and included studies assessing prevalence estimates, associations with neuropsychological and/or psychosocial functioning, or predictors of CDS in individuals with chronic or complex medical conditions. Twenty-five studies were identified and retained. Fifteen of sixteen studies reported elevations in CDS symptoms, though findings were mixed in studies comparing mean differences to typically developing youth. Seven studies provided inconsistent evidence for CDS being associated with neuropsychological or academic functioning, with six studies demonstrating consistent effects on psychosocial functioning. Finally, nine studies identified biological and sociodemographic factors associated with CDS, though almost all await replication. CDS symptoms are significantly elevated in youth with medical conditions and appear to be particularly linked with psychosocial functioning. Future research is needed to identify prevalence of CDS across a range of medical conditions, examine associations with neuropsychological and psychosocial functioning, and examine whether CDS impacts self-management. Background: Lung cancer is the deadliest and most prevalent malignancy worldwide. While smoking is an established cause, evidence to identify other causal factors remains lacking. Current research indicates chronic inflammation is involved in tumorigenesis and cancer development, though the specific mechanisms underlying the role of inflammatory cytokines in lung cancer pathogenesis remain unclear. This study implemented Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal effects of circulating cytokines on lung cancer development. Methods: We performed a two-sample MR analysis in Europeans utilizing publicly available genome-wide association study summary statistics. Single nucleotide polymorphisms significantly associated with cytokine were selected as genetic instrumental variables. Results: Genetically predicted levels of the chemokine interleukin-18 (IL-18) (OR = 0.942, 95% CI: 0.897-0.990, P = 0.018) exerted significant negative causal effects on overall lung cancer risk in this analysis. Examining specific histologic subtypes revealed further evidence of genetic associations. Stem cell factor (SCF) (OR = 1.150, 95% CI: 1.021-1.296, P = 0.021) and interleukin-1beta (IL-1β) (OR = 1.152, 95% CI: 1.003-1.325, P = 0.046) were positively associated with lung adenocarcinoma risk, though no inflammatory factors showed causal links to squamous cell lung cancer risk. Stratified by smoking status, interferon gammainduced protein 10 (IP-10) (OR = 0.861, 95% CI: 0.781-0.950, P = 0.003) was inversely associated while IL-1β (OR = 1.190, 95% CI: 1.023-1.384, P = 0.024) was positively associated with lung cancer risk in ever smokers. Among never smokers, a positive association was observed between lung cancer risk and SCF (OR = 1.474, 95% CI: 1.105-1.964, P = 0.008). Importantly, these causal inferences remained robust across multiple complementary MR approaches, including MR-Egger, weighted median, weighted mode and simple mode regressions. Sensitivity analyses also excluded potential bias stemming from pleiotropy. Conclusion: This MR study found preliminary evidence that genetically predicted levels of four inflammatory cytokines--SCF, IL-1β, IL-18, and IP-10--may causally influence lung cancer risk in an overall and subtype-specific manner, as well as stratified by smoking status. Identifying these cytokine pathways that may promote lung carcinogenesis represents potential new targets for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of this deadly malignancy. Background and Objectives: One of the members of the neurotrophin (NT) family is the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). In addition to its role in the nerve system, it has been found to play a role in lung health and diseases. Materials and Methods: The serum concentrations of BDNF were assessed in 57 patients with COPD and in 19 control individuals and the possible associations of BDNF with the spirometric indexes and disease stages were explored. Results: We did not find a significant difference between the serum concentrations of BDNF of patients and controls (p = 0.521). A significant negative correlation of the serum BDNF levels with the age of the patients (Rho = −0.279, p = 0.036) was observed. In addition, a borderline negative correlation with the age of disease onset (Rho= −0.244, p = 0.063) was also found. When analyzing these correlations in different genders, we found stronger statistical significance in male patients (Rho = −0.398, p = 0.009; and Rho = −0.419, p = 0.006), while no such significance was found in females (p = 0.574 and p = 0.342). The analyses of the possible relations of serum BDNF concentration with the spirometric parameters in the whole group of patients did not reveal any significance (p = 0.231 for FEV1%pr. and p = 0.271 for FEV1/FVC%). However, when the patients were dichotomized on the basis of smoking habits, we obtained a strong positive correlation between BDNF and FEV1%pr. (Rho = 0.501, p = 0.048) in non-smokers, but strong negative correlations with FEV1%pr. (Rho = −0.468, p = 0.003) and with FEV1/FVC% (Rho = −0.331, p = 0.040) in ex/current smokers. Non-smokers with moderate disease (GOLD II) had higher BDNF serum concentrations than patients with GOLD stage III/IV (p = 0.031). In ex/current smokers, there was an opposite association (p = 0.045). Conclusions: The results of our study suggest that the expression and secretion of BDNF are changed in COPD, but its effects and functions may differ according to the smoking history of the patients. In vitro toxicology research has accelerated with the use of in silico, computational approaches and human in vitro tissue systems, facilitating major improvements evaluating the safety and health risks of novel consumer products. Innovation in molecular and cellular biology has shifted testing paradigms, with less reliance on low-throughput animal data and greater use of medium- and high-throughput in vitro cellular screening approaches. These new approach methodologies (NAMs) are being implemented in other industry sectors for chemical testing, screening candidate drugs and prototype consumer products, driven by the need for reliable, human-relevant approaches. Routine toxicological methods are largely unchanged since development over 50 years ago, using high-doses and often employing in vivo testing. Several disadvantages are encountered conducting or extrapolating data from animal studies due to differences in metabolism or exposure. The last decade saw considerable advancement in the development of in vitro tools and capabilities, and the challenges of the next decade will be integrating these platforms into applied product testing and acceptance by regulatory bodies. Governmental and validation agencies have launched and applied frameworks and "roadmaps" to support agile validation and acceptance of NAMs. Next-generation tobacco and nicotine products (NGPs) have the potential to offer reduced risks to smokers compared to cigarettes. These include heated tobacco products (HTPs) that heat but do not burn tobacco; vapor products also termed electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), that heat an e-liquid to produce an inhalable aerosol; oral smokeless tobacco products (e.g., Swedish-style snus) and tobacco-free oral nicotine pouches. With the increased availability of NGPs and the requirement of scientific studies to support regulatory approval, NAMs approaches can supplement the assessment of NGPs. This review explores how NAMs can be applied to assess NGPs, highlighting key considerations, including the use of appropriate in vitro model systems, deploying screening approaches for hazard identification, and the importance of test article characterization. The importance and opportunity for fit-for-purpose testing and method standardization are discussed, highlighting the value of industry and cross-industry collaborations. Introduction: To analyze the influencing factors for progression from newly diagnosed prediabetes (PreDM) to diabetes within 3 years and establish a prediction model to assess the 3-year risk of developing diabetes in patients with PreDM. Methods: Subjects who were diagnosed with new-onset PreDM at the Physical Examination Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from October 1, 2015 to May 31, 2023 and completed the 3-year follow-up were selected as the study population. Data on gender, age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, etc. were collected. After 3 years of follow-up, subjects were divided into a diabetes group and a non-diabetes group. Baseline data between the two groups were compared. A prediction model based on logistic regression was established with nomogram drawn. The calibration was also depicted. Results: Comparison between diabetes group and non-diabetes group: Differences in 24 indicators including gender, age, history of hypertension, fatty liver, BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, etc. were statistically significant between the two groups (P<0.05). Differences in smoking, creatinine and platelet count were not statistically significant between the two groups (P>0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that ageing, elevated BMI, male gender, high fasting blood glucose, increased LDL-C, fatty liver, liver dysfunction were risk factors for progression from PreDM to diabetes within 3 years (P<0.05), while HDL-C was a protective factor (P<0.05). This study aims to assess the association between nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), varenicline, and untreated smoking with the risk of developing eye disorders. We employed a new-user design to investigate the association between NRT use and the incidence of eye disorders by the Taiwan National Health Insurance program. This study included 8416 smokers who received NRT and 8416 smokers who did not receive NRT (control group) matched using propensity scores between 2007 and 2018. After adjustment for relevant factors, a multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that compared with untreated smokers, NRT use was associated with a significantly reduced risk of macular degeneration (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.34; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.13–0.87, P = 0.024). When stratified by dose, short-term NRT use (8–28 defined daily doses) was associated with significantly lower risk of glaucoma (HR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.16–0.80, P = 0.012) and a trend toward reduced risk of cataract (HR: 0.60; 95% CI: 0.36–1.01, P = 0.053) compared to no treatment. However, these associations were not observed with long-term NRT use. The results of this real-world observational study indicate that NRT use, particularly short-term use, was associated with a lower risk of certain eye disorders compared to no treatment for smoking cessation. Long-term NRT use did not demonstrate the same benefits. Thus, short-term NRT may be a beneficial treatment strategy for reducing the risk of eye disorders in smokers attempting to quit. Introduction: Cigarette smoking is a persistent public health problem as it is a risk factor for many diseases. Previous studies on the role of illegal drug use in cigarette smoking have yielded disparate and inconclusive results, hindering the development of effective intervention strategies to address this issue. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of cigarette smoking and its associated factors, with a specific focus on the influence of illegal drug use among students in Ethiopia. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of international databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, CINAHL, African Journals Online, HINARI, Global Health, and Google and Google Scholar. Grey literature was also identified from various university digital libraries. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) guidelines. Due to the high heterogeneity among the included studies (I2 = 98.6%; p-value <0.001), we employed a random-effects model with a 95% confidence interval (CI) to estimate the pooled effect using STATA 14 software. The publication bias was assessed using a statistical Egger regression test. Results: A total of 22 studies involving 18,144 students met the eligibility criteria for this systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of lifetime and current cigarette smoking among students in Ethiopia was 13.8% (95% CI: 9.90–17.82) and 9.61% (95% CI: 7.19–12.03), respectively. Students who used illegal drugs were twenty-three times more likely to smoke cigarettes compared to their counterparts (OR = 23.57, 95% CI: 10.87–51.1). Living in urban settings (OR = 2.9; 95% CI: 1.15–7.28) and the habit of alcohol consumption (OR = 4.79; 95% CI: 1.57–14.64) were also identified as factors associated with cigarette smoking. Conclusions: We found that more than one in eight students in Ethiopia have engaged in lifetime cigarette smoking. Notably, students who used illegal drugs exhibited a significantly higher likelihood of cigarette smoking. In light of these findings, it is imperative to implement comprehensive public health interventions that target illegal drug use, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption, with a particular emphasis on urban residents. Head and neck cancers rank as the sixth most prevalent cancers globally. In addition to traditional risk factors such as smoking and alcohol use, human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are becoming a significant causative agent of head and neck cancers, particularly among Western populations. Although HPV offers a significant survival benefit, the search for better biomarkers is still ongoing. In the current study, our objective was to investigate whether the expression levels of three PDZ-domain-containing proteins (SCRIB, NHERF2, and DLG1), known HPV E6 cellular substrates, influence the survival of HNSCC patients treated by primary surgery (n = 48). Samples were derived from oropharyngeal and oral cancers, and HPV presence was confirmed by PCR and p16 staining. Clinical and follow-up information was obtained from the hospital database and the Croatian Cancer registry up to November 2023. Survival was evaluated using the Kaplan–Meier method and Cox proportional hazard regression. The results were corroborated through the reanalysis of a comparable subset of TCGA cancer patients (n = 391). In conclusion, of the three targets studied, only SCRIB levels were found to be an independent predictor of survival in the Cox regression analysis, along with tumor stage. Further studies in a more typical Western population setting are needed since smoking and alcohol consumption are still prominent in the Croatian population, while the strongest association between survival and SCRIB levels was seen in HPV-negative cases. Background: Data published early in the COVID-19 pandemic suggested that smokers infected with SARS-CoV-2 were more likely to need hospital treatment or die than non-smokers, and thus this was seen as a motivator to encourage smokers to make a quit attempt. Live Life Better Derbyshire (LLBD) is an integrated lifestyle service providing free support for residents Derbyshire, UK, who want to quit smoking. On 19 March 2020, LLBD converted from offering face-to-face cessation support to a smoking cessation service delivered remotely. Methods: Interrupted time series analysis to investigate the impact of COVID-19, and the shift to remote delivery of smoking cessation support, on the number of smokers who accessed cessation support with LLBD, set a quit date, and self-reported having quit at 4-week follow-up. Results: 11,393 episodes of smoking cessation support were opened with LLBD between 01 January 2018 and 31 December 2021. The weekly count of all outcomes was increasing prior to the date when LLBD converted to remote-only delivery. There was a 20% immediate drop in the number of episodes opened coinciding with this date (IRR 0.88, 95% CI 0.646–0.992) but no change in the number of quit dates set or 4-week quits or the underlying longer-term trends. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic, and associated shift to remote delivery of smoking cessation support by LLBD, had no substantial sustained overall impact on measures of smoking cessation service activity and success. The proportion of flaming and smoldering activity occurring in landscape fires varies with fuel type and fuel characteristics, which themselves are influenced by ecology, meteorology, time since the last fire etc. The proportion of these combustion phases greatly influences the rate of fuel consumption and smoke emission, along with the chemical composition of the smoke, which influences the effects on the atmosphere. Earth Observation (EO) has long been suggested as a way to remotely map combustion phase, and here we provide the first known attempt at evaluating whether such approaches can lead to the desired improvements in smoke emissions estimation. We use intensively measured laboratory burns to evaluate two EO approaches hypothesized to enable remote determination of combustion phase and concurrent measurements of the smoke to determine how well each is able to improve estimation of smoke emission rates, smoke composition and the overall rate of fuel consumption. The first approach aims to estimate the sub-pixel 'effective fire temperature', which has been suggested to differ between flaming and smoldering combustion, and the second detects the potassium emission line (K-line) believed only to be present during flaming combustion. We find while the fire effective temperature approach can be suited to estimating Fire Radiative Power (FRP), it does not significantly improve on current approaches to estimate smoke chemical makeup and smoke emission. The K-line approach does however provide these improvements when combined with the FRP data, improving the accuracy of the estimated CO2 emission rate by an average of 17±4 % and 42±15 %, respectively, depending on whether the K-line detection is used to simply classify the presence of flaming combustion, or whether its magnitude is also used to estimate its relative proportion. Estimates of CO and CH4 emission rates were improved to a lesser extent than that of CO2, but the accuracy of the smoke modified combustion efficiency (MCE) estimates increased by 30±15 % and 46±10 %, respectively. MCE is correlated to the emissions factors (EFs) of many smoke constituents, so remotely deriving MCE provides a way to tailor these during smoke emissions calculations. Whilst we derived and tested our approaches on laboratory burns, we demonstrate their wider efficacy using airborne EO data of a boreal forest wildfire where we find that combined used of K-line and FRP data significantly change estimated smoke MCE and CO2 and CO emission rates compared to the standard approach. Our findings suggest that satellite EO methods that jointly provide K-Line and FRP data could enable marked improvements in the mapping of landscape fire combustion phase, fuel consumption and smoke emissions rate and composition. Background: The Triglyceride glucose (TyG) index-related indicators improve risk stratification by identifying individuals prone to atherosclerosis early in life. This study aimed to examine the relation between TyG-waist circumference-to-height ratio (TyG-WHtR) and coronary heart disease. Methods: Data from four National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) cycles between 2011 and 2018 were used for a cross-sectional study. The association between TyG-WHtR and coronary heart disease risk was examined using a multifactorial logistic regression model, and corresponding subgroup analyses were performed. Nonlinear correlations were analyzed using smooth curve fitting and threshold effects analysis. When nonlinear connections were discovered, appropriate inflection points were investigated using recursive methods. Results: TyG-WHtR and coronary heart disease were significantly positively correlated in the multifactorial logistic regression analysis. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests revealed that gender, age, smoking status, and cancer were not significantly associated with this correlation (P for interaction > 0.05). Furthermore, utilizing threshold effect analysis and smooth curve fitting, a nonlinear connection with an inflection point of 0.36 was observed between TyG-WHtR and coronary heart disease. Background: Smoking rates among people living with behavioral health conditions (BHC) range from 30 to 65% and are 2–4 times higher than rates found in the general population. Starting tobacco treatment during a hospital stay is effective for smoking cessation, but little is known regarding treatment response among inpatients with BHC. Objective: This study pooled data across multiple clinical trials to determine the relative success in quitting among participants with BHC compared to other study participants. Participants: Adults who smoke (≥ 18 years old) from five hospital-based smoking cessation randomized clinical trials. Design: A retrospective analysis using data from the electronic health record to identify participants with primary diagnoses related to BHC. Recruitment and data analysis were conducted from 2011 to 2016. We used propensity score matching to pair patients with BHC to those with similar characteristics and logistic regression to determine differences between groups. Measures: The main outcome was self-reported 30-day abstinence 6 months post-discharge. Results: Of 6612 participants, 798 patients had a BHC-related primary diagnosis. The matched sample included 642 pairs. Nearly 1 in 3 reported using tobacco medications after hospitalization, with no significant difference between patients with and without BHC (29.3% vs. 31.5%; OR (95% CI) = 0.90 (0.71, 1.14), p = 0.40). Nearly 1 in 5 patients with BHC reported abstinence at 6 months; however, their odds of abstinence were 30% lower than among people without BHC (OR (95% CI) = 0.70 (0.53,0.92), p = 0.01). Conclusion: When offered tobacco treatment, hospitalized patients with BHC were as likely as people without BHC to accept and engage in treatment. However, patients with BHC were less likely to report abstinence compared to those without BHC. Hospitals are a feasible and promising venue for tobacco treatment among inpatients with BHC. Objective: To evaluate Antithrombin II and Factor V Leiden mutation in stroke among young patients and its association with various socio-demographic aspects. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Pak-Emirates Military Hospital, Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Jan to Dec 2020. Methodology: A total of 103 individuals, aged 18-65 years, with acute ischemic stroke were included. The diagnosis was confirmed using computed tomography/Magnetic Resonance Imaging Brain scan. Plasma AT II activity and Factor V Leiden mutation were analyzed using standard techniques. Various socio demographic features like age, gender, body mass index, smoking, deployment at High altitude (>10,000 feet), family history of stroke and hyperlipidemia were recorded and statisticaly analyzed. Results: Only two (1.9%) patients had AT II deficiency while one (0.9%) patient showed Factor V Leiden mutation. Al patients were male. Working at high altitude, family history of stroke and tobacco smoking were related with the presence of low AT II levels (p-value <0.05). Conclusion: Testing for hypercoagulable states in the seting of stroke in young may be useful if there is family history of stroke, smoking and high-altitude deployment. Background: Studies indicated that smoking alters the response to anesthetics and alters the outcome of perioperative care. A full understanding of the impact of smoking cessation to enhance surgical outcomes is pertinent. Purpose: This research aimed to compare perioperative cardiopulmonary complications in smokers and non-smokers during elective surgery under general anesthesia. We aimed to determine the incidence of complications in patients with a history of smoking, identify those at an increased risk, and assess the relationship between smoking duration and complications Materials and Methods: A total of 100 patients, comprising 50 smokers and 50 non-smokers, were enrolled in the study. Various parameters, including heart rate increase during intubation, severe coughing, bronchospasm, oral secretions, oxygen desaturation, reintubation, opioid antagonist use, pulmonary edema, and other cardiopulmonary events, were assessed perioperatively. Statistical analysis involved both continuous and categorical variables. For continuous variables, the Student's t -test and the Mann–Whitney U test were used for normally and non-normally distributed data, respectively. For categorical variables, chi-squared tests were employed. Sub-group analysis assessed the influence of smoking duration on the measured parameters. Results: Smokers exhibited significantly higher incidences of severe coughing, heart rate elevation during intubation, and bronchospasm compared to non-smokers. Additionally, smokers experienced more pronounced oxygen desaturation throughout the perioperative period. Furthermore, a longer history of smoking was associated with an increased risk of complications, with individuals smoking for 10 or more years displaying a higher incidence of adverse events. Conclusion: Smokers, particularly those with extended smoking histories, are at an increased risk of cardiopulmonary complications during elective surgery under general anesthesia. Emphasizing preoperative optimization, meticulous airway management, and smoking cessation support is essential to mitigate these risks. When there is a fire in a tunnel, the heat released by the combustion is difficult to dissipate and the temperature inside the tunnel would rise rapidly. Longitudinal ventilation (LV) has been commonly adopted as the smoke control strategy in tunnel fires, which is essential to safeguard the tunnel structure and the trapped people. Besides the smoke control method by LV, the water mist system (WMS) can provide a powerful cooling effect for the high-temperature smoke in the tunnel. This article aims to investigate the impact of WMS on the smoke back-layering (BL) length with LV and the mutual effect process between the smoke spread and the WMS. The findings show that the BL length is restricted more effectively by the combined action of water mist and LV. Upon activation of the WMS, the water mist's effect inhibits the smoke's ability to spread upstream and causes the smoke layer to settle down, which disturbs the stability of the smoke layer. An unstable layer of smoke is more likely to be blown downstream by longitudinal ventilation. All water mist particle diameters show a significant reduction in smoke back-layering with an increased flow rate. The BL length would gradually reduce as the particle diameter is decreased. The tendency of flow rate and particle diameter on the BL length shows similar effects to the critical velocity (V cr). Objectives of this study were to determine the eradication rate of H. pylori by using the standard triple therapy, and to highlight the influence of some demographic characteristics such as age, gender, diabetes mellitus, and smoking on the eradication rate, in Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. Results: The medical records of 186 patients were included in the study. The overall rate of successful eradication was found to be 77.4%. The results of the study showed that the decline in the eradication rate was significantly associated with the presence of diabetes and smoking status (with p-values of < 0.001 and < 0.004, respectively). Conclusion: This study finds that the standard triple therapy for H. pylori eradication is less effective than optimal standards, as per literature and guidelines. Introduction: Although research on burnout syndrome in medical students has increased in recent years, results are inconsistent about which factors are associated with a high risk for burnout syndrome. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of high risk of burnout syndrome and to identify factors associated with burnout in medical students in preclinical and clinical training. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Kragujevac, Serbia. The Maslach Burnout Inventory Student Survey and an epidemiological questionnaire on basic socio-demographic and academic characteristics were used. Statistical evaluation was performed through logistic regression analysis, using Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% Confidence Interval (CI). Results: Among medical students, no statistically significant differences were found in the prevalence of high risk of burnout syndrome in preclinical (14.8%) and clinical grade (15.1%), p > 0.05. High risk for burnout syndrome in preclinical study years was independently associated with the female sex (adjusted OR = 0.41, 95%CI = 0.19–0.91, p = 0.028), and cigarette smoking (adjusted OR = 2.47, 95%CI = 1.05–5.78, p = 0.038). The high risk of burnout syndrome was associated with sedatives use (adjusted OR = 4.03, 95%CI = 1.27–12.73; p = 0.018) only in clinical years medical students. The frequency of alcohol consumption was correlated with the high risk of burnout syndrome in medical students in both preclinical and clinical training, but without statistical significance (both p for trend < 0.1). New vertebral compression fractures (NVCF) are common in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) who have undergone percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP). We sought to develop a nomogram prediction model for better identification and prevention of NVCF within 3 years after PVP in patients with OVCF. The demographic, clinical, and imaging data of patients who underwent PVP for OVCF between January 2010 and December 2019 were reviewed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to screen for risk factors for NVCF within 3 years after PVP. A nomogram prediction model was then developed and validated to visually predict NVCF. The samples in the model were randomly divided into training and validation sets at a ratio of 7:3. Twenty-seven percent of patients experienced NVCF in other segments within 3 years after PVP. Older age, lower bone mineral density (BMD), smoking, lack of anti-osteoporosis therapy, and postoperative trauma were risk factors for NVCF. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve suggested good discrimination of this model: training set (0.781, 95% confidence interval: 0.731–0.831) and validation set (0.786, 95% confidence interval: 0.708–0.863). The calibration curve suggested good prediction accuracy between the actual and predicted probabilities in the training and validation sets. The DCA results suggested that, when the probability thresholds were 0.0452–08394 and 0.0336–0.7262 in the training and validation set, respectively, patients can benefit from using this model to predict NVCF within 3 years after PVP. In conclusion, this nomogram prediction model that included five risk factors (older age, lower BMD, smoking, postoperative minor trauma, and lack of anti-osteoporosis treatment can effectively predict NVCF within 3 years after PVP. Postoperative smoking cessation, standard anti-osteoporosis treatment, and reduction in incidental minor trauma are necessary and effective means of reducing the incidence of NVCF. Introduction: Although it is known that maternal tobacco use during pregnancy substantially declined in higher-income countries, information on the magnitude and determinants of tobacco use among pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains limited. Establishing evidence on maternal tobacco during pregnancy is crucial for guiding targeted interventions in SSA. This study aimed to determine the overall prevalence of tobacco use and its determinants among pregnant women in SSA countries. Methods: The study used data from Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 33 countries across SSA from 2010 and 2021. Our analysis included a total weighted sample of 40,291 pregnant women. A multilevel logistic regression model was used to identify factors associated with maternal tobacco use during pregnancy. The measure of association between explanatory variables and the outcome was reported using adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: The pooled prevalence of tobacco use among pregnant women in SSA was 1.76% (95% CI: 1.41, 2.12). Our findings showed that pregnant women in the age groups of 25–34 years (AOR 1.44; 95% CI: 1.14, 1.82) and 35+ years (AOR 2.18; 95% CI: 1.68, 2.83) had higher odds of tobacco use during pregnancy. Pregnant women who attained primary education (AOR 0.57; 95% CI: 0.46, 0.70) and secondary or higher education (AOR 0.39; 95% CI: 0.30, 0.53) were associated with lower odds of tobacco use. Similarly, pregnant women who resided in households with a high wealth index (AOR 0.36; 95% CI: 0.55 0.90) and those with media exposure (AOR 0.81; 95% CI: 0.67, 0.99) were less likely to use tobacco during pregnancy. Conclusion: This study revealed that the overall prevalence of maternal tobacco use during pregnancy was relatively low in SSA, but some countries exhibited higher estimates. Background: There may be an association between obesity and periodontitis, yet no studies have investigated the correlation between the new obesity indicator, the weight-adjusted-waist Index (WWI), and periodontitis. Objective: This study aims to investigate the association between the novel obesity index, weight-adjusted-waist index, and periodontitis. Subjects and methods: WWI was utilized to assess obesity, through measuring waist circumference (WC) and body weight. We analyzed cross-sectional NHANES data from 2009 to 2014 (1) using multivariate logistic regression to explore WWI's association with moderate/severe periodontitis; (2) conducting subgroup analyses and interaction tests; and (3) fitting smoothed curves to the age-stratified logistic regression model. Results: The study involved 11,256 individuals, with 48.55% having moderate/severe periodontitis. Upon adjusting for all relevant variables, a significant correlation between WWI and moderate/severe periodontitis was observed (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01–1.17). Compared to the lowest quartile of WWI, there was a significant increase in the likelihood of moderate/severe periodontitis in Quartile 2 (OR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.06–1.39) and Quartile 3 (OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.07–1.42). Subgroup analyses for gender, age, education, smoking, and diabetes highlighted a positive association between WWI and moderate/severe periodontitis in all subgroups, except for the diabetic population and individuals aged 65 years and older. Objective: This cross-sectional study aims to analyse the relationship between sedentary behaviour and breast cancer (BC) risk from a social perspective. Methods: Women aged 45–70 who participated in the Valencia Region Breast Cancer Screening Programme (2018–2019) were included, with a total of 121,359 women analysed, including 506 with cancer and 120,853 without cancer. The response variable was BC (screen-detected) and the main explanatory variable was sedentary behaviour (≤2 / >2-≤3 / >3-≤5 / >5 hours/day, h/d). Nested logistic regression models (M) were estimated: M1: sedentary behaviour adjusted for age and family history of BC; M2: M1 + hormonal/reproductive variables (menopausal status, number of pregnancies, hormone replacement therapy; in addition, months of breastfeeding was added for a subsample of women with one or more live births); M3: M2 + lifestyle variables (body mass index, smoking habits); M4: M3 + socioeconomic variables (educational level, occupation); Final model: M4 + gender variables (childcare responsibilities, family size). Interaction between sedentary behaviour and educational level was analysed in the Final model. Moreover, for the whole sample, postmenopausal women and HR+ BC, the Final model was stratified by educational level. Results: Sedentary behaviour was associated with an increased risk of BC with a nearly statistically significant effect in the Final model (>2-≤3 h/d: OR = 1.22 (0.93–1.61); >3-≤5 h/d: OR = 1.14 (0.86–1.52); >5: OR = 1.19 (0.89–1.60)). For women with a low educational level, sitting more than 2 h/d was associated with an increased risk of BC in the whole sample (>2-≤3 h/d OR = 1.93 (1.19–3.21); in postmenopausal women (>2-≤3 h/d, OR = 2.12 (1.18–2.96), >5h/d OR = 1.75 (1.01–3.11)) and in HR+ BC (>2-≤3h/d, OR = 2.15 (1.22–3.99)). Similar results were observed for women with one or more live births. Background and aim: Health literacy (HL) is one of the effective factors in controlling the COVID-19 epidemic. Considering the high prevalence of COVID-19 disease, the present study aimed to determine the relationship between HL and the adoption of COVID-19 preventive behaviors. Materials and methods: This was a descriptive-cross sectional study conducted on 214 students selected by simple random sampling method in Esfarayen Faculty of Medical Sciences, Iran, in 2022. The data included demographic and background characteristics, health literacy for Iranian Adults (HELIA), and a valid and reliable questionnaire to measure COVID-19 preventive behaviors. The data were analyzed using SPSS 23, descriptive statistics, and ordinal logistic regression tests. Results: The mean and standard deviation of the scores of adoption of COVID-19 preventive behaviors and HL among students were 18.18) 4.02(out of 25 and 72.14) and 12.75 (out of 100, respectively. The results of the logistic regression test showed that the HL (P = 0.003), gender (P<0.001), mother's education (P = 0.039), educational level (P = 0.031), smoking (P = 0.032), and physical activity (P = 0.007) were effective factors in adopting preventive behaviors. Conclusion: Adopting preventive behaviors against COVID-19 was lower among students with lower levels of health literacy, male students, students with less physical activity, students with illiterate mothers, undergraduate students, and finally smokers. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to these students in designing educational programs. Background: As a highly heterogeneous tumor, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is famous for its high incidence and mortality worldwide. Smoking can cause genetic changes, which leading to the occurrence and progress of NSCLC. Nevertheless, the function of smoking-related genes in NSCLC needs more research. Methods: We downloaded transcriptome data and clinicopathological parameters from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases, and screened smoking-related genes. Lasso regression were applied to establish the 7-gene signature. The associations between the 7-gene signature and immune microenvironment analysis, survival analysis, drug sensitivity analysis and enriched molecular pathways were studied. Ultimately, cell function experiments were conducted to research the function of FCGBP in NSCLC. Results: Through 7-gene signature, NSCLC samples were classified into high-risk group (HRG) and low-risk group (LRG). Significant difference in overall survival (OS) between HRG and LRG was found. Nomograms and ROC curves indicated that the 7-gene signature has a stable ability in predicting prognosis. Through the analysis of immune microenvironment, we found that LRG patients had better tumor immune activation. FCGBP showed the highest mutation frequency among the seven prognostic smoking related genes (LRRC31, HPGD, FCGBP, SPINK5, CYP24A1, S100P and FGG), and was notable down-regulated in NSCLC smokers compared with non-smoking NSCLC patients. The cell experiments confirmed that FCGBP knockdown promoting proliferation, migration, and invasion in NSCLC cells. Conclusion: This smoking-related prognostic signature represents a promising tool for assessing prognosis and tumor microenvironment in smokers with NSCLC. Background: Recent reports indicated accelerated rates of e-cigarette use, especially among youth in various Middle Eastern countries, including Palestine. Nevertheless, little is known about knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions regarding this topic in Palestine. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of e-cigarette use among Palestinian university students, along with their knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about e-cigarette use. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study, utilizing an online self-administered questionnaire, was conducted on Palestinian students from five universities between 17/04/2023 and 04/11/2023. Results: A total of 1002 Palestinian university students completed the questionnaire. The prevalence of e-cigarette use among students was 18.1%. The mean knowledge score about e-cigarettes was significantly lower among the users of e-cigarettes compared to non-users. E-cigarette use was significantly associated with the participants' smoking status. Among e-cigarette users, 43.6% were also current traditional cigarette users, and 66.9% were current waterpipe users. E-cigarette use was significantly associated with having a friend who is a smoker and/ or a smoking mother. Binary logistic regression revealed a significant positive effect between the participant's smoking status, the mother's smoking status, knowledge about e-cigarettes, and the use of e-cigarettes (p-value < 0.05). Among e-cigarette users, 18.8% used them in indoor places at the university, and 25% reported using them daily in the past month. Affordability of e-cigarettes was the most reported reason for their use (47.5%). Conclusion: This study concluded that e-cigarette use is prevalent and rapidly rising among university students in Palestine. This is worrisome as it is significantly associated with insufficient knowledge about the adverse health effects of E-cigarette use, and its addictive nature. These findings focus on the importance of improving the students' knowledge about e-cigarette use by implementing educational campaigns and considering age regulations on e-cigarette availability and use. Background: Diarrhea is the second leading cause of under-five deaths claiming half a million children every year. Most of these deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Oral rehydration solution (ORS) has been described as the most effective treatment of diarrhea. However, only 36% of children with diarrhea received ORS in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined the factors associated with ORS use for children with diarrhea in the sub-region. Methods: Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data sets of 31 countries in sub-Saharan Africa were used in this study. The data involved 30,102 under-five children with diarrhea. The multivariable analysis involved binary logistic regression. Results: Prevalence of ORS use was 38% in sub-Saharan Africa with countries such as Namibia (71.8%), Zambia (66.4%) and Malawi (63.8%) having the highest rates. Use of ORS was most common among children whose mothers had secondary or higher education (45%), were exposed to media (41%) and attended antenatal care (41%). ORS use was significantly associated with secondary or higher education (OR = 1.63; 95%CI: [1.47–1.81]; p<0.001), exposure to media (OR = 1.17; 95%CI: [1.07–1.27]; p<0.001), antenatal care attendance (OR = 2.33; 95%CI: [1.08–1.27]; p<0.001), child's age (OR = 1.46; 95%CI: [1.35–1.59]; p<0.001), child's size at birth (OR = 1.08; 95%CI: [1.00–1.17]; p<0.05), household size (OR = 1.28; 95%CI:[1.06–1.54]; p<0.05) and source of drinking water (OR = 1.18; 95%CI: [1.09–1.29]; p<0.001). Conclusion: This study revealed a 38% prevalence of ORS use during diarrhea episodes in sub-Saharan Africa. This is low as it is less than the 44% recorded for developing countries as a whole. While this study emphasises the need for a further study on effects of severity of diarrhea on ORS use and factors determining differences in ORS use among countries, it also calls for interventions that will increase use of ORS is sub-Saharan Africa. Such interventions should include increase in literacy rate among girls and women, increase in the proportion of women with access to media, involvement of health workers in programmes that would promote antenatal care utilization among women at community level and provision of social amenities like pipe-borne water. Objectives: To map organisational interventions for workplace suicide prevention, identifying the effects, mechanisms, moderators, implementation and economic costs, and how interventions are evaluated. Background: Suicide is a devastating event that can have a profound and lasting impact on the individuals and families affected, with the highest rates found among adults of work age. Employers have a legal and ethical responsibility to provide a safe working environment for their employees, which includes addressing the issue of suicide and promoting mental health and well-being. Methods: A realist perspective was taken, to identify within organisational suicide prevention interventions, what works, for whom and in what circumstances. Published and unpublished studies in six databases were searched. To extract and map data on the interventions the Effect, Mechanism, Moderator, Implementation, Economic (EMMIE) framework was used. Mechanisms were deductively analysed against Bronfenbrenner's socio-ecological model. Results: From 3187 records screened, 46 papers describing 36 interventions within the military, healthcare, the construction industry, emergency services, office workers, veterinary surgeons, the energy sector and higher education. Most mechanisms were aimed at the individual's immediate environment, with the most common being education or training on recognising signs of stress, suicidality or mental illness in oneself. Studies examined the effectiveness of interventions in terms of suicide rates, suicidality or symptoms of mental illness, and changes in perceptions, attitudes or beliefs, with most reporting positive results. Few studies reported economic costs but those that did suggested that the interventions are cost-effective. Conclusions: It seems likely that organisational suicide prevention programmes can have a positive impact on attitudes and beliefs towards suicide as well reducing the risk of suicide. Education, to support individuals to recognise the signs and symptoms of stress, mental ill health and suicidality in both themselves and others, is likely to be an effective starting point for successful interventions. Smoking is a well-known cause of impairment in wound healing and postoperative outcomes; however, its effects on treating meniscus issues remain unclear. This study assesses the relationship between smoking and meniscus treatment outcomes. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and CINAHL were searched from inception to 24 December 2023. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies examining smoking's impact on patient outcomes regarding meniscus pathology. A secondary PubMed search targeted randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the top ten orthopedic journals focusing on meniscus pathology and smoking as a demographic variable. Meta-analysis of six studies (n = 528) assessed meniscus failure rate based on smoking status. Eighteen observational studies (n = 8353 patients; 53.25% male; mean age: 51.35 ± 11.53 years; follow-up: 184.11 ± 117.34 months) were analyzed, covering meniscus repair, meniscectomy, allograft transplant, conservative care, and arthroscopy. Results showed four studies (36.36%) linked smoking with worse meniscus repair outcomes, while seven studies (63.64%) did not find significant associations. Meta-analysis from six studies showed no significant impact of smoking on repair failure (p = 0.118). Regarding meniscectomy, one study (33.33%) identified a significant association with smoking, but two did not. Only one (3.8%) of the RCTs in leading orthopedic journals included smoking as a factor. Background: With the decline of cognitive function in vascular cognitive impairment, the burden on the family and society will increase. Therefore, early identification of vascular mild cognitive impairment (VaMCI) is crucial. The focus of early identification of VaMCI is on the attention of risk factors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between diabetes and VaMCI among the Chinese, hoping to predict the risk of VaMCI by diabetes and to move the identification of vascular cognitive impairment forward. Methods: We collected data from seven clinical centers and nine communities in China. All participants were over 50 years of age and had cognitive complaints. We collected basic information of the participants, and cognitive function was professionally assessed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale. Finally, logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between each factor and VaMCI. Results: A total of 2020 participants were included, including 1140 participants with VaMCI and 880 participants with normal cognition. In univariate logistic regression analysis, age, heavy smoking, and diabetes had a positive correlation with VaMCI. At the same time, being married, high education, and light smoking had a negative correlation with VaMCI. After correction, only diabetes (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01–1.09, p = 0.05) had a positive correlation with VaMCI, and high education (OR = 0.60, 95% CI:.45–.81, p = 0.001) had a negative correlation with VaMCI. Conclusion: In our study, we found that diabetes had a positive correlation with VaMCI, and high education had a negative correlation with VaMCI. INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular (CV) diseases are a major public health issue, the prevention of which plays a key role in promoting flight safety. However, few studies have looked at the determinants of the overall risk of CV morbidity-mortality within the various aeronautical occupations. METHODS: A monocentric, observational, cross-sectional study was based on the retrospective data collected during 6 mo at the Toulon Aeromedical Center. From October 2017 to April 2018, 2792 professional aircrew ages 18--74 were included. The overall CV risk was estimated using the European Society of Cardiology SCORE and the Framingham model, as well as a summation model. RESULTS: More than two-thirds of this mainly male population (86.2%) had no more than one CV risk factor [69.9% (68.2--71.6)]. In 82.5% of cases, this was dyslipidemia according to current European criteria [55.8% (52.4--59.1)] or smoking [26.7% (23.8-29.8)]. An overall risk level of "moderate" to "very high" concerned only one subject in five according to the SCORE model [20.1% (18.6-21.6)], one in six according to Framingham [16.3% (14.9-17.7)] and almost one in three according to the summation model [30.1% (28.4-31.9)]. DISCUSSION: Multivariate analyses found no significant associations between socio-professional criteria and overall risk levels. The results have underlined the effect of dyslipidemia and smoking on early risk among applicants. Beyond the illustration of favorable cardiovascular status among aircrews related to the standards of selection and close monitoring process, areas for improvement were identified, inviting the development of prevention strategies around the "moderate" overall CV risk. Many studies sought to demonstrate the association between smoking and fracture risk. However, the correlation between smoking and fractures remains controversial. This study aimed to examine the impact of smoking and smoking cessation on the occurrence of fractures using prospective nationwide cohort data. We enrolled those who underwent a National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) health checkup in 2009–2010 who had a previous health checkup 4-year prior (2005–2006). The study population of 4,028,559 subjects was classified into three groups (non-smoker, smoking cessation, current smoker). The study population was also analyzed according to fracture type (all fractures, vertebral fracture, hip fracture). Lastly, the smoking cessation group and current smoker group were divided into four subgroups based on a lifetime smoking amount cut-off of 20 pack-years (PY). Multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of fracture were examined through a Cox proportional hazards model. After multivariable adjustment, non-smokers showed the lowest risk of fracture (HR = 0.818, CI 0.807–0.828, p < 0.0001) and smoking cessation significantly lowered the risk of fracture (HR 0.938, 95% CI 0.917–0.959, p < 0.0001) compared to current smokers. Regardless of 20PY, all smoking cessation subgroups showed significantly less risk of fractures than current smokers with ≥ 20PYs. Objective: Although some studies have linked smoking to mortality after out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs), data regarding smoking and mortality after OHCAs have not yet been discussed in a meta-analysis. Thus, this study conducted this systematic review to clarify the association. Methods: The study searched Medline-PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane libraries between January 1972 and July 2022 for studies that evaluated the association between smoking and mortality after OHCAs. Studies that reportedly showed relative risk estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were included. Results: Incorporating a collective of five studies comprising 2477 participants, the analysis revealed a lower mortality risk among smokers in the aftermath of OHCAs compared with non-smokers (odds ratio: 0.77; 95% CI 0.61–0.96; P < 0.05). Egger's test showed no publication bias in the relationship between smoking and mortality after OHCAs. Conclusions: After experiencing OHCAs, smokers had lower mortality than non-smokers. Background: Lifestyle changes, in addition to preventive medications, optimise stroke secondary prevention. Evidence from systematic reviews support behaviour-change interventions post-stroke to address lifestyle-related risk. However, understanding of the theory-driven mediators that affect behaviour-change post-stroke is lacking. Methods: Electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, Epistemonikos and Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews were searched to March 2023 for systematic reviews addressing behaviour-change after stroke. Primary studies from identified systematic reviews were interrogated for evidence supporting theoretically-grounded interventions. Data were synthesized in new meta-analyses examining behaviour-change domains of the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and secondary prevention outcomes. Results: From 71 identified SRs, 246 primary studies were screened. Only 19 trials (N = 2530 participants) were identified that employed theoretically-grounded interventions and measured associated mediators for behaviour-change. Identified mediators mapped to 5 of 14 possible TDF domains. Trial follow-up ranged between 1–12 months and no studies addressed primary outcomes of recurrent stroke or cardiovascular mortality and/or morbidity. Lifestyle interventions targeting mediators mapped to the TDF Knowledge domain may improve the likelihood of medication adherence (OR 6.08 [2.79, 13.26], I2 = 0%); physical activity participation (OR 2.97 [1.73, 5.12], I2 = 0%) and smoking cessation (OR 10.37 [3.22, 33.39], I2 = 20%) post-stroke, supported by low certainty evidence; Lifestyle interventions targeting mediators mapping to both TDF domains of Knowledge and Beliefs about Consequences may improve medication adherence post-stroke (SMD 0.36 [0.07, 0.64], I2 = 13%, very low certainty evidence); Lifestyle interventions targeting mediators mapped to Beliefs about Capabilities and Emotions domains may modulate low mood post-stroke (SMD -0.70 [-1.28, -0.12], I2 = 81%, low certainty evidence). Conclusion: Limited theory-based research and use of behaviour-change mediators exists within stroke secondary prevention trials. Knowledge, Beliefs about Consequences, and Emotions are the domains which positively influence risk-reducing behaviours post-stroke. Behaviour-change interventions should include these evidence-based constructs known to be effective. Future trials should address cardiovascular outcomes and ensure adequate follow-up time. Background: To investigate whether the relationship between smoking and peripheral artery disease (PAD) differs by sex (PROSPERO CRD42022352318). Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL were searched (3 March 2024) for studies reporting associations between smoking and PAD in both sexes, at least adjusted for age. Data were pooled using random effects. Between-study heterogeneity was examined using I2 statistic and Cochran's Q test. Newcastle-Ottowa Scale was adopted for quality assessment. Results: Four cohort studies (n = 2,117,860, 54.4% women) and thirteen cross-sectional studies (n = 230,436, 59.9% women) were included. In cohort studies, former and current smokers had higher risk of PAD than never smokers. Compared to those who never or previously smoked, women current smokers (relative risk (RR) 5.30 (95% confidence interval 3.17, 8.87)) had higher excess risk of PAD than men (RR 3.30 (2.46, 4.42)), women-to-men ratio of RR 1.45 (1.30, 1.62)(I2 = 0%, p = 0.328). In cross-sectional studies, risk of PAD was higher among former and current compared to never smokers, more so in men, women-to-men ratios of odds ratio: 0.64 (0.46, 0.90)(I2 = 30%, p = 0.192), 0.63 (0.50, 0.79)(I2 = 0%, p = 0.594), respectively. For both sexes, risk of PAD was higher among current smokers compared to those who were not currently smoking. Cohort studies and five cross-sectional studies were of good quality, scoring 6 to 8 of a possible maximum 9 points. Eight cross-sectional studies scored 2 to 5. Discussions: Further research is required to elucidate sex differences in the relationships between smoking and PAD, as the current evidence is limited and mixed. Background: The prevalence of Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD) represents a significant and pressing global public health concern, with far-reaching and deleterious consequences for individuals, communities, and healthcare systems. The craving caused by smoking cue is an important trigger for relapse, fundamentally hindering the cessation of cigarette smoking. Mindfulness interventions focusing on cue-reactivity was effective for the treatment of related dependence. Brief mindfulness training (BMT) meets the short-term needs for intervention but the effects still need to be examined. The objective of the present study is to investigate the impact of BMT intervention on smoking cue-reactivity among Chinese college students with TUD, to uncover the dynamic models of brain function involved in this process. Method: A randomized control trial (RCT) based on electroencephalography (EEG) was designed. We aim to recruit 90 participants and randomly assign to the BMT and control group (CON) with 1:1 ratio. A brief mindfulness training will be administered to experimental group. After the intervention, data collection will be conducted in the follow-up stage with 5 timepoints of assessments. EEG data will be recorded during the smoking cue-reactivity task and 'STOP' brief mindfulness task. The primary outcomes include subjective reports of smoking craving, changes in EEG indicators, and mindfulness measures. The secondary outcomes will be daily smoking behaviours, affect and impulsivity, as well as indicators reflecting correlation between mindfulness and smoking cue-reactivity. To evaluate the impact of mindfulness training, a series of linear mixed-effects models will be employed. Specifically, within-group effects will be examined by analysing the longitudinal data. Additionally, the effect size for all statistical measurements will be reported, offering a comprehensive view of the observed effects. Discussion: The current study aims to assess the impact of brief mindfulness-based intervention on smoking cue-reactivity in TUD. It also expected to enhance our understanding of the underlying processes involved in brain function and explore potential EEG biomarkers at multiple time points. Sarcopenia prevalence and its risk factors in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) vary partly due to definition criteria. This systematic review aimed to identify the prevalence and risk factors of sarcopenia in COPD patients. This review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022310750). Nine electronic databases were searched from inception to September 1st, 2022, and studies related to sarcopenia and COPD were identified. Study quality was assessed using a validated scale matched to study designs, and a meta-analysis was performed to evaluate sarcopenia prevalence. COPD patients with sarcopenia were compared to those without sarcopenia for BMI, smoking, and mMRC. The current meta-analysis included 15 studies, with a total of 7,583 patients. The overall sarcopenia prevalence was 29% [95% CI: 22%–37%], and the OR of sarcopenia in COPD patients was 1.51 (95% CI: 1.19–1.92). The meta-analysis and systematic review showed that mMRC (OR = 2.02, P = 0.04) and age (OR = 1.15, P = 0.004) were significant risk factors for sarcopenia in COPD patients. In contrast, no significant relationship was observed between sarcopenia and smoking and BMI. Nursing researchers should pay more attention to the symptomatic management of COPD and encourage patients to participate in daily activities in the early stages of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
