We undertake a comprehensive investigation into the distribution of insitu stars within Milky Way-like galaxies, leveraging TNG50 simulations and comparing their predictions with data from the H3 survey. Our analysis reveals that 28% of galaxies demonstrate reasonable agreement with H3, while only 12% exhibit excellent alignment in their profiles, regardless of the specific spatial cut employed to define insitu stars. To uncover the underlying factors contributing to deviations between TNG50 and H3 distributions, we scrutinize correlation coefficients among internal drivers(e.g., virial radius, star formation rate [SFR]) and merger-related parameters (such as the effective mass-ratio, mean distance, average redshift, total number of mergers, average spin-ratio and maximum spin alignment between merging galaxies). Notably, we identify significant correlations between deviations from observational data and key parameters such as the median slope of virial radius, mean SFR values, and the rate of SFR change across different redshift scans. Furthermore, positive correlations emerge between deviations from observational data and parameters related to galaxy mergers. We validate these correlations using the Random Forest Regression method. Our findings underscore the invaluable insights provided by the H3 survey in unraveling the cosmic history of galaxies akin to the Milky Way, thereby advancing our understanding of galactic evolution and shedding light on the formation and evolution of Milky Way-like galaxies in cosmological simulations., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

We report the detection of seven new galaxy candidates with redshift $z$ $>$ 11 within the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) GOODS-S and GOODS-N fields. These new candidates are detected through meticulous analysis of NIRCam photometry in eight filters spanning a wavelength range of 0.8-5.0 $\mu$m. Photometric redshifts of these galaxy candidates are independently measured utilizing spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting techniques using \texttt{EAZY} and \texttt{BAGPIPES} codes, followed by visual scrutiny. Two of these galaxy candidates are located in GOODS-S field, while the remaining five galaxies are located in GOODS-N field. Our analysis reveals that the stellar masses of these galaxies typically range from log $M_{\ast}$/$M_{\odot}$ = 7.75--8.75. Futhermore, these galaxies are typically young with their mass-weighted ages spanning from 80 to 240 Myr. Their specific star formation rates (sSFR), quantified as $\log (\text{sSFR}/\text{Gyr}$), are measured to vary between $\sim 0.95$ to 1.46. These new galaxy candidates offer a robust sample for probing the physical properties of galaxies within the first few hundred Myr of the history of the Universe. We also analyze the relationship between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($M_\ast$) within our sample. Using linear regression, our analysis yields a slope of $0.71 \pm 0.12$, which we then compare with results from previous studies. Continued investigation through spectroscopic analysis using JWST/NIRSpec is needed to spectroscopically confirm these high-redshift galaxy candidates and investigate further into their physical properties. Recent X-ray studies of starburst galaxies have found that Charge eXchange (CX) commonly occurs between the outflowing hot plasma and cold gas, possibly from swept-up clouds. However, the total CX flux and the regions where CX occurs have been poorly understood. We present an analysis of the {\it XMM-Newton} observations of M82, a prototype starburst galaxy, aiming to investigate these key properties of the CX emisssion. We have used a blind source separation method in the image analysis with the CCD data which identified a component with the enhanced O-K lines expected from the CX process. Analyzing the RGS spectra from the region identified by the image analysis, we have detected a high forbidden-to-resonance ratio in the \ion{O}{7} He$\alpha$ triplet as well as several emission lines from K-shell transitions of C, N, and O enhanced in the CX process. The CX is less responsible for the emission line of Ne and Mg and the accurate estimation of the CX contribution is confirmed to be crucial in measuring chemical abundances. The temperature of the plasma as electron receiver in the CX process is significantly lower compared to that of the plasma components responsible for most of the X-rays. From the low temperature and an estimation of the CX emitting volume, we find that the CX primarily occurs in a limited region at the interface of the plasma and gas whose temperature rapidly decreases due to thermal conduction., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We make an in-depth analysis of different AGN jet models' signatures, inducing quiescence in galaxies with a halo mass of $10^{12} M_\odot$. Three jet models, including cosmic ray-dominant, hot thermal, and precessing kinetic jets, are studied at two energy flux levels each, compared to a jet-free, stellar feedback-only simulation. We examine the distribution of Mg II, O VI, and O VIII ions, alongside gas temperature and density profiles. Low-energy ions, like Mg II, concentrate in the ISM, while higher energy ions, e.g., O VIII, prevail at the AGN jet cocoon's edge. High-energy flux jets display an isotropic ion distribution with lower overall density. High-energy thermal or cosmic ray jets pressurize at smaller radii, significantly suppressing core density. The cosmic ray jet provides extra pressure support, extending cool and warm gas distribution. A break in the ion-to-mass ratio slope in O VI and O VIII is demonstrated in the ISM-to-CGM transition (between 10-30 kpc), growing smoothly towards the CGM at greater distances., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

Accurate atomic data and plasma models are essential for interpreting the upcoming high-quality spectra from missions like XRISM and Athena. Estimating physical quantities, like temperature, abundance, turbulence, and resonance scattering factor, is highly dependent on the underlying atomic data. We use the AtomDB tool variableapec to estimate the impact of atomic data uncertainties in Einstein A coefficients, collisional rate coefficient, ionization and recombination rates in H-, He- and Li-like iron in modeling the spectrum of Perseus observed by Hitomi. The best-fit temperature, abundance, resonance scattering factor, and turbulence including atomic data uncertainties, varied approximately 17%, 35%, 30%, and 3%, respectively, from the best-fit temperature, abundance, resonance scattering factor, and turbulence estimated without atomic data uncertainties. This indicates that, approximately 32%, 35%, and 25% of the best-fit temperatures, abundances, and resonance scattering factors, including uncertainties lie outside the 3$\sigma$ error regions of their corresponding best-fit values computed with zero atomic data error. Expanding the energy range to 1.8-20.0 keV shows less variability, with 26% of the abundances and 22% of the resonance scattering factors lying outside the 3$\sigma$ error of the best-fit values. We also studied correlations between physical parameters and atomic rate uncertainties to identify key atomic quantities requiring precise lab measurements. We report negative correlations between best-fit temperature and z (1s.2s $^{3}\rm S_{1}\rightarrow 1s^{2}$) collisional rate coefficient, abundance and y (1s.2p $^{3}\rm P_{1}\rightarrow 1s^{2}$) collisional rate coefficient, abundance and z collisional rate coefficient, and positive correlation between resonance scattering factor and w (1s.2p $^{1}\rm P_{1}\rightarrow 1s^{2}$) collisional rate coefficient., Comment: Accepted for Publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The giant spiral galaxy M101 is host to the nearest recent Type Ia Supernova (SN 2011fe) and thus has been extensively monitored in the near-infrared to study the late-time lightcurve of the supernova. Leveraging this existing baseline of observations, we derive the first Mira-based distance to M101 by discovering and classifying a sample of 211 Miras with periods ranging from 240 to 400 days in the supernova field. Combined with new HST WFC3/IR channel observations, our dataset totals 11 epochs of F110W (HST $YJ$) and 13 epochs of F160W (HST $H$) data spanning $\sim$2900 days. We adopt absolute calibrations of the Mira Period-Luminosity Relation based on geometric distances to the Large Magellanic Cloud and the water megamaser host galaxy NGC 4258, and find $\mu_{\rm M101} = $ 29.10 $\pm$ 0.06 mag. This distance is in 1$\sigma$ agreement with most other recent Cepheid and Tip of the Red Giant Branch distance measurements to M101. Including the previous Mira-SNIa host, NGC 1559 and SN 2005df, we determine the fiducial SN Ia peak luminosity, $M^0_B = -19.27 \pm 0.09$ mag. With the Hubble diagram of SNe Ia, we derive $H_0 = 72.37 \pm 2.97 $ km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$, a $4.1\%$ measurement of $H_0$ using Miras. We find excellent agreement with recent Cepheid distance ladder measurements of $H_0$ and confirm previous indications that the local universe value of $H_0$ is higher than the early-universe value at $\sim$ $95\%$ confidence. Dark matter-dominated cores have long been claimed for the well-studied local group dwarf galaxies. More recently, extended stellar halos have been uncovered around several of these dwarfs through deeper imaging and spectroscopy. Such core-halo structures are not a feature of conventional cold dark matter (CDM), based on collisionless particles where smooth, scale-free profiles are predicted. In contrast, smooth and prominent dark matter cores are predicted for Warm and Fuzzy/Wave Dark Matter (WDM/$\psi$DM) respectively. The question arises to what extent the visible stellar profiles should reflect this dark matter core structure. Here we compare cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of CDM, WDM $\&$ $\psi$DM, aiming to predict the stellar profiles for these three DM scenarios. We show that cores surrounded by extended halos are distinguishable for WDM and $\psi$DM, with the most prominent cores in the case of $\psi$DM, where the stellar density is enhanced in the core due to the presence of the relatively dense soliton. Our analysis demonstrates that such behavior does not appear in CDM, implying that the small-scale cut-off in the power spectrum present for WDM and $\psi$DM provides a core-halo transition. Consequently, we estimate the mass of the $\psi$DM particle at this core-halo transition point. Furthermore, we observe the anticipated asymmetry for $\psi$DM due to the soliton's random walk, a distinctive characteristic not found in the symmetric distributions of stars in Warm and CDM models., Comment: 17 pages and 15 figures

In this paper, we present a simple, one-step, self-consistent, and fast resonance scattering model rsapec based on the AtomDB database. This model can be used as an alternative to the commonly used APEC model for fitting such X-ray spectra with optically thick lines. The current model is intended, in general, for verifying the presence of the effect and for spectral modeling of galaxy clusters and elliptical galaxies under applicable assumptions. We test rsapec to derive the line suppression in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4636 and the Perseus cluster of galaxies and obtain resonance suppression of ~ 1.24 and ~ 1.30, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Arcus is a concept for a probe class mission to deliver high-resolution FUV and X-ray spectroscopy. For X-rays, it combines cost-effective silicon pore optics (SPO) with high-throughput critical-angle transmission (CAT) gratings to achieve $R> 3000$ in a bandpass from 12-50 Angstroem. We show in detail how the X-ray and the UV spectrographs (XRS and UVS) on Arcus will be aligned to each other. For XRS we present ray-tracing studies to derive performance characteristics such as the spectral resolving power and effective area, study the effect of misalignments on the performance, and conclude that most tolerances can be achieved with mechanical means alone. We present an in-depth analysis of a newly proposed correlation function in visibility space, between the E and B modes of the linear polarization, hereafter the EB-correlation, for a set of time-averaged GRMHD simulations compared with the phase map from different semi-analytic models as well as the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) 2017 data for M87* source. We demonstrate that the phase map of the time-averaged EB-correlation contains novel information that might be linked to the BH spin, accretion state and the electron temperature. A detailed comparison with a semi-analytic approach with different azimuthal expansion modes shows that to recover the morphology of the real/imaginary part of the correlation function and its phase, we require higher orders of these azimuthal modes. To extract the phase features, we propose to use the Zernike polynomial reconstruction developing an empirical metric to break degeneracies between models with different BH spins that are qualitatively similar. We use a set of different geometrical ring models with various magnetic and velocity field morphologies and show that both the image space and visibility based EB-correlation morphologies in MAD simulations can be explained with simple fluid and magnetic field geometries as used in ring models. SANEs by contrast are harder to model, demonstrating that the simple fluid and magnetic field geometries of ring models are not sufficient to describe them owing to higher Faraday Rotation depths. A qualitative comparison with the EHT data demonstrates that some of the features in the phase of EB-correlation might be well explained by the current models for BH spins as well as electron temperatures, while others may require a larger theoretical surveys., Comment: 26 pages, 21 Figures

We explore the plasma matter content in the innermost accretion disk/jet in M87* as relevant for an enthusiastic search for the signatures of anti-matter in the next generation of the Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT). We model the impact of non-zero positron-to-electron ratio using different emission models including a constant electron to magnetic pressure (constant $\beta_e$ model) with a population of non-thermal electrons as well as a R-beta model populated with thermal electrons. In the former case, we pick a semi-analytic fit to the force-free region of a general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulation, while in the latter case, we analyze the GRMHD simulations directly. In both cases, positrons are being added at the post-processing level. We generate polarized images and spectra for some of these models and find out that at the radio frequencies, both of the linear and the circular polarizations get enhanced per adding pairs. On the contrary, we show that at higher frequencies a substantial positron fraction washes out the circular polarization. We report strong degeneracies between different emission models and the positron fraction, though our non-thermal models show more sensitivities to the pair fraction than the thermal models. We conclude that a large theoretical image library is indeed required to fully understand the trends probed in this study, and to place them in the context of large set of parameters which also affect polarimetric images, such as magnetic field strength, black hole spin, and detailed aspects of the electron temperature and the distribution function., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We propose to trace the dynamical motion of a shearing hot spot near the SgrA* source through a dynamical image reconstruction algorithm, StarWarps. Such a hot spot may form as the exhaust of magnetic reconnection in a current sheet near the black hole horizon. A hot spot that is ejected from the current sheet into an orbit in the accretion disk may shear and diffuse due to instabilities at its boundary during its orbit, resulting in a distinct signature. We subdivide the motion to two distinct phases; the first phase refers to the appearance of the hot spot modelled as a bright blob, followed by a subsequent shearing phase simulated as a stretched ellipse. We employ different observational arrays, including EHT(2017,2022) and the next generation event horizon telescope (ngEHTp1, ngEHT) arrays, in which few new additional sites are added to the observational array. We make dynamical image reconstructions for each of these arrays. Subsequently, we infer the hot spot phase in the first phase followed by the axes ratio and the ellipse area in the second phase. We focus on the direct observability of the orbiting hot spot in the sub-mm wavelength. Our analysis demonstrates that newly added dishes may easily trace the first phase as well as part of the second phase, before the flux is reduced substantially. The algorithm used in this work can be extended to any other types of the dynamical motion. Consequently, we conclude that the ngEHT is a key to directly observe the dynamical motions near variable sources, such as SgrA*., Comment: 16 pages, 8 pages

We investigate general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations (GRMHD) to determine the physical origin of the twisty patterns of linear polarization seen in spatially resolved black hole images and explain their morphological dependence on black hole spin. By characterising the observed emission with a simple analytic ring model, we find that the twisty morphology is determined by the magnetic field structure in the emitting region. Moreover, the dependence of this twisty pattern on spin can be attributed to changes in the magnetic field geometry that occur due to the frame dragging. By studying an analytic ring model, we find that the roles of Doppler boosting and lensing are subdominant. Faraday rotation may cause a systematic shift in the linear polarization pattern, but we find that its impact is subdominant for models with strong magnetic fields and modest ion-to-electron temperature ratios. Models with weaker magnetic fields are much more strongly affected by Faraday rotation and have more complicated emission geometries than can be captured by a ring model. However, these models are currently disfavoured by the recent EHT observations of M87*. Our results suggest that linear polarization maps can provide a probe of the underlying magnetic field structure around a black hole, which may then be usable to indirectly infer black hole spins. We present an in-depth analysis of gas morphologies for a sample of 25 Milky Way-like galaxies from the IllustrisTNG TNG50 simulation. We constrain the morphology of cold, warm, hot gas, and gas particles as a whole using a Local Shell Iterative Method (LSIM) and explore its observational implications by computing the hard-to-soft X-ray ratio, which ranges between $10^{-3}$-$10^{-2}$ in the inner $\sim 50 \rm kpc$ of the distribution and $10^{-5}$-$10^{-4}$ at the outer portion of the hot gas distribution. We group galaxies into three main categories: simple, stretched, and twisted. These categories are based on the radial reorientation of the principal axes of the reduced inertia tensor. We find that a vast majority ($77\%$) of the galaxies in our sample exhibit twisting patterns in their radial profiles. Additionally, we present detailed comparisons between 1) the gaseous distributions belonging to individual temperature regimes, 2) the cold gas distributions and stellar distributions, and 3) the gaseous distributions and dark matter (DM) halos. We find a strong correlation between the morphological properties of the cold gas and stellar distributions. Furthermore, we find a correlation between gaseous distributions with DM halo that increases with gas temperature, implying that we may use the warm-hot gaseous morphology as a tracer to probe the DM morphology. Finally, we show gaseous distributions exhibit significantly more prolate morphologies than the stellar distributions and DM halos, which we hypothesize is due to stellar and AGN feedback., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures

Arcus is a proposed soft x-ray grating spectrometer Explorer. It aims to explore cosmic feedback by mapping hot gases within and between galaxies and galaxy clusters and characterizing jets and winds from supermassive black holes, and to investigate the dynamics of protoplanetary discs and stellar accretion. Arcus features 12 m-focal-length grazing-incidence silicon pore optics (SPO) developed for the Athena mission. Critical-angle transmission (CAT) gratings efficiently disperse high diffraction orders onto CCDs. We report new and improved x-ray performance results for Arcus-like CAT gratings, including record resolving power for two co-aligned CAT gratings. Multiple Arcus prototype grating facets were illuminated by an SPO at the PANTER facility. The facets consist of $32\times32.5$ mm$^2$ patterned silicon membranes, bonded to metal frames. The bonding angle is adjusted according to the measured average tilt angle of the grating bars in the membrane. Two simultaneously illuminated facets show minor broadening of the Al-K$_{\alpha}$ doublet in 18$^{\rm th}$ and 21$^{\rm st}$ orders with a best fit record effective resolving power of $R_G \approx 1.3^{+\infty}_{-0.5}\times10^4$ ($3\sigma$), about 3-4 times the Arcus requirement. We measured the diffraction efficiency of quasi-fully illuminated gratings at O-K wavelengths in orders 4-7 in an Arcus-like configuration and compare results with synchrotron spot measurements. After corrections for geometrical effects and bremsstrahlung continuum we find agreement between full and spot illumination at the two different facilities, as well as with the models used for Arcus effective area predictions. The physical origin of the overionized recombining plasmas (RPs) in supernova remnants (SNRs) has been attracting attention because its understanding provides new insight into SNR evolution. However, the process of the overionization, although it has been discussed in some RP-SNRs, is not yet fully understood. Here we report on spatially resolved spectroscopy of X-ray emission from IC~443 with {\it XMM-Newton}. We find that RPs in regions interacting with dense molecular clouds tend to have lower electron temperature and lower recombination timescale. These tendencies indicate that RPs in these regions are cooler and more strongly overionized, which is naturally interpreted as a result of rapid cooling by the molecular clouds via thermal conduction. Our result on IC~443 is similar to that on W44 showing evidence for thermal conduction as the origin of RPs at least in older remnants. We suggest that evaporation of clumpy gas embedded in a hot plasma rapidly cools the plasma as was also found in the W44 case. We also discuss if ionization by protons accelerated in IC~443 is responsible for RPs. The shell type supernova remnant (SNR) Cas A exhibits structures at nearly all angular scales. Previous studies show the angular power spectrum $(C_{\ell})$ of the radio emission to be a broken power law, consistent with MHD turbulence. The break has been identified with the transition from 2D to 3D turbulence at the angular scale corresponding to the shell thickness. Alternatively, this can also be explained as 2D inverse cascade driven by energy injection from knot-shock interactions. Here we present $C_{\ell}$ measured from archival VLA $5$GHz (C band) data, and Chandra X-ray data in the energy ranges ${\rm A}=0.6-1.0 \, \, {\rm keV}$ and ${\rm B} =4.2-6.0 \, \, {\rm keV}$, both of which are continuum dominated. The different emissions all trace fluctuations in the underlying plasma and possibly also the magnetic field, and we expect them to be correlated. We quantify this using the cross $C_{\ell}$ between the different emissions. We find that X-ray B is strongly correlated with both radio and X-ray A, however X-ray A is only very weakly correlated with radio. This supports a picture where X-ray A is predominantly thermal bremsstrahlung whereas X-ray B is a composite of thermal bremsstrahlung and non-thermal synchrotron emission. The various $C_{\ell}$ measured here, all show a broken power law behaviour. However, the slopes are typically shallower than those in radio and the position of the break also corresponds to smaller angular scales.
