In the history of Japanese education, the "gender characteristics theory" that men and women naturally have different characteristics rejected not only the "gender equality theory" which came from Western Europe in the early Meiji era, but also the traditional "male chauvinism" of East Asia. According to the theory of gender characteristics, men and women were seen as having "equal value," though not "equal rights." This theory became the main educational philosophy of women's education when the single-sex school system was established in the 1900s, and likewise permeated society as a scientific theory in the 1920s. After World War II, when gender equality became accepted, a coeducational system was introduced toward equal educational opportunities. However, the gender characteristics theory remained the basis for making home economics a compulsory subject for women, as the division of labor by gender expanded during the high economic growth period of the sixties and environs. Coeducation was a system intended for men and women to "respect" each other and "cooperate" (Article 5 of the Basic Act on Education), and gender differences in curricula in coeducational schools were seen as "reasonable" differences to ensure "essential equality" between men and women. Schools were also not considered places of gender inequality. Elsewhere, women's universities and women's junior colleges were established after the war with the expectation that they would play a new role in training women to support the democratic society. However, they also inherited the pre-war vocational school curriculum centered on literature and home economics. When these colleges increased during the period of high economic growth, this prewar curriculum spread further, based on the gender characteristics theory. As a result, women's universities and women's junior colleges were criticized as contrary to gender equality. It was only after the 1985 ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the spread of gender equality that the gender characteristics theory was finally rejected. Today, the raison d'être of girls' education is being questioned again. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women not only rejects the gender characteristics theory and fixed gender roles, but also defines "discrimination against women" as "discrimination, exclusion or restriction based on sex." As the concept of gender spreads, the view that separating men and women is itself "discrimination" is also spreading. If women's education is to continue to exist, its raison d'être will depend on its ability to contribute to the elimination of gender disparities.

The development of professional skills is essential for biology students to be successful in their future careers. However, current teaching approaches often fail to provide adequate training. The aim of this theory to practice study was to develop an effective methodology for improving the professional skills of biology students through laboratory work. Theoretical and diagnostic methods, mathematical statistics, empirical methods, and a questionnaire were used. The results showed a significant increase in competencies after the laboratory training intervention. Students demonstrated significant improvements in technical skills, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication. In conclusion, structured practical laboratory training shows promise for enhancing the professional capabilities of aspiring biologists. The practical value of this study is to develop work skills, independent decision-making ability, and professional skills, in line with the requirements of modern scientific community.

This study examines a common pedagogical approach whereby students view teacher feedback outside of class time. Facilitated through Moodle, it aimed to investigate not only the effect of written corrective feedback (WCF) on learning outcomes, but importantly, how frequently students review the feedback they receive. The study was conducted at a Japanese Women's University in Tokyo (age: M = 19.6, SD = 0.6). Over a 15-week semester, students were required to write weekly homework assignments. These were then marked by the researcher and returned via Moodle, with students encouraged to read their feedback before attempting the next assignment. In line with existing research in the field, a no-WCF control group was compared against treatment groups that received indirect WCF with meta-linguistic explanations. Further to this, using an online system such as "Moodle" allowed the provision of linked grammar resource pages through basic HTML code embedded within the WCF itself. At the end of the semester student texts were analysed to measure improvement. When pre-test and post-tests were compared there were no significant differences within groups or between groups on measures of fluency and accuracy. However, what sets this study apart from others that have investigated student engagement, is the use of online activity logs which in combination with survey data allowed the investigation of actual study habits rather than merely those that are self-reported. The results of which give better insight and valid explanations for the outcomes of the study and call into question the efficacy of take-home feedback.

This article reports on an intervention related to L2 learner well-being based on Oxford's (2016) EMPATHICS theoretical framework. The intervention was conducted at a women's university in Tokyo in three of the researcher's own first-year, compulsory, four-skills English-language classes. Forty-six learners agreed to take part in the study. To operationalize Oxford's (2016) framework, the author drew on several areas of the literature, including grit, trait-EI, self-efficacy, L2 motivation, L2 learner autonomy, mindsets, and language-learning strategies. Data collection instruments used consisted of a forty-five item self-assessment tool, a six-item mini-survey to indicate learners' pre-existing levels of L2 well-being, a self-report homework handout to facilitate learners' overall reflective process, and an End-of-intervention Evaluation Report. The ten-week intervention consisted of: (1) having the learners self-assess their use of strategy-related tactics in class one and completing the L2 well-being mini-survey; (2) learners providing a written reflection and/or taking action and providing a written report about their actions after class five times across the term related to tactics in the self-assessment with the help of written advice from the researcher; and (3) the researcher providing guidance about multiple tactics in class and having the learners focus on those tactics when completing relevant activities in class. It was hoped that the overall intervention would encourage positive change in learners' L2 well-being. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed, and avenues for future research are suggested.

The purpose of this study was to assess the degree colleges' preparation for the new transition phase, transferring the BA/BSc programs into ADA/ADS programs. The participants of this qualitative study were principals of Degree Colleges in the Makran division and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Themes generated from data showed that degree colleges of the Makran division were not capable of starting the AD/ADS programs properly due to shortage of human and physical resources. The findings also identified that the principals serving these colleges were not involved in the decisions taken by Higher Education Commission for the degree colleges. Recommendations based on the findings indicate that degree colleges of the Makran region require more support and facilitation from Higher Education Commission and Provincial Government before the initiation of ADA/ADS Programs. The findings and recommendations will be helpful in the preparation of Degree colleges transferring from BA/BSc to ADA/ADS programs.

By looking at the relationship between workplace culture and gender identity, this research examines ways to potentially improve women's satisfaction and perceptions of female workers in this presently disadvantageous work environment in Korea. Drawing from previous criticism for having prioritized inter-group processes over particular social identities, this research uses Social Identity Theory as the main theoretical framework in two studies to structure the factors affecting workplace environment, specifically workplace culture for women and working women's satisfaction with communication. The first study applies intra-group analysis to examine the impact that the gender composition of a school has on gender identity, and it examines the relationship between organizational gender composition and women's perceptions of workplace culture by employing an experiment within a survey, which contains scenarios of an imaginary workplace, to Korean female college students (n = 439). The results demonstrate women attending women's colleges displayed stronger gender identity than those attending co-ed colleges on two dimensions of gender identity: in-group ties and centrality. The second study surveys Korean female workers (n = 171) to examine the same relationships while more deeply looking into the effects of gender composition of the workplace on women's satisfaction with communication. The main finding shows that for a sex-integrated organization, women who attended women's colleges denoted higher communication satisfaction with supervisors and same-sex coworkers than women who attended coed colleges. Implications of these findings and future research directions are discussed.

UNC Greensboro's vision is to be a national model for how a public research university can achieve access and excellence to transform students, the institution, and the community. With origins as the segregated Woman's College (WC), our evolution as a southern metropolitan public university reflects race, place, and intertwined historical legacies. Embedded inclusive excellence, as a heuristic, frames the intentional, synergistic, and organic processes we engage in advancing faculty diversity and a more inclusive learning environment. Specifically, borrowing a central concept from economics, we illustrate cultural, structural/institutional, and social "embeddedness" that has supported significant and positive changes at our university.

The promotion of cross-racial relationships on college campuses has been arduous in a society that is shaped by a long history of racial inequities and racially segregated educational experiences. In this exploratory investigation of the cross-racial relationships of Black college-aged women, we considered the results of two focus groups composed of Black women undergraduates (N = 19). We identified three themes: (a) significance of race and other shared identities in structuring friendships; (b) fighting stereotypes, and (c) reckoning with the wounds of racism. Through the lens of relational cultural theory, we examine these themes as starting points for understanding cross-racial student relationships.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the communicative features of teacher talk in English for General Purposes (EGP) vs. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes in Iranian contexts based on the Self-Evaluation Teacher Talk (SETT) framework. Design/methodology/approach: For the purposes of this study, EAP and EGP classes run by three language instructors and three content instructors were observed and interviews with teacher participants were conducted. The data were analyzed by content analysis, and emerging overarching themes were recorded. Findings: The findings of this study indicate that the translation of texts into Persian was the dominant theme in classes run by content instructors who were less aware of the communicative features of teacher talk. However, one of the content instructors who was familiar with the communicative features of teacher talk as well as general language instructors were found to be highly aware of the potential of their teacher talk to encourage communication in his classes. The innovative and communicative features in the language/content instructor suggest the importance of teacher agency in bringing change in education at the micro-level. This study has implications for various agencies involved in teaching EAP, EGAP and English for Specific Purposes (ESAP), raising awareness regarding the communicative features of teacher talk as a driving force leading learners and teachers to more communicative opportunities in language classrooms. The findings suggest that teacher talk is an essential component of classroom discourse, shaping students' linguistic and academic development, and that teacher agency is crucial in promoting communicative opportunities in language education. To boost communication, the authors recommend translanguaging with a focus on both communication and optimal use of the mother tongue in EAP classes. Originality/value: There is little empirical evidence on the communicative aspects of teacher talk in higher education. This study can inspire more parallel research on EAP settings in higher education with a focus on communication and teacher talk features.

This paper uses the writings of European teachers and Chinese students at St. Stephen's Girls' College in Hong Kong--published in English periodicals of its school magazine and local English newspapers--to examine how the school tactically positioned itself as an educational site for the "useful women of China" during a period in Republican China that was simultaneously defined as a time of "cosmopolitan modernity" and "national rebuilding." St. Stephen's brand of usefulness responded to the "New Woman" phenomenon in Republican China, and it was defined through the narrative of science learning and a sense of service. Through its progressive science curriculum and social service branch, the school helped prepare a class of "career women" for China. It was in educating this class that St. Stephen's, in resonance with the colonial state, envisioned its role in the shaping of modern China.

This essay recontextualizes the Yale Report of 1828, arguing that the report's advocacy for classical liberal education should be understood alongside the racial concerns of its authors, some of whom were well-known colonizationists who viewed African American education as a threat to New Haven's social and economic stability. The Yale Report's vision for leadership and economic success not only excluded African Americans by default, but created a lasting binary that defined Black educational opportunities in the nineteenth century and beyond. The essay considers the near overlap between the writing of the Yale Report and the failed proposal to establish an African American men's college in New Haven in 1831, placing the document within a key period in the history of American higher education in which education became highly commodified and racialized. Building upon scholarship on the Yale Report that has already considered its neorepublican aims, this essay opens the possibility of viewing the document beyond its immediate concerns with curricular reform and contemplating the elusive connections between American higher education, race, and power.

The present study investigates the frequently used speech acts related to positive and negative politeness techniques employed in requests and apologies by faculty members at King Abdulaziz University. Social interaction on University Campus reflects Hejazi culture located in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia. The significance of the study arises from its focus on university-life interaction between faculty members as it provides an investigation of positive and negative politeness strategies. The paper tries to answer two questions: (1) Is there a relationship between the faculty's years of experience and the request strategies employed?; and (2) Is there a relationship between the faculty years of experience and the apology strategies used? To answer these questions, a Discourse Completion Test was developed and given to 30 faculty members. The findings of the study show that social power, which is derived from having more years of experience, affects the request and apology strategies used among Saudi female faculty members. Faculty members of an older generation tend to use syntactically more extended sentences in requests compared to their younger colleagues, to alleviate the sense of their social power and save others' sense of face. In contrast, the more youthful faculty members tended to use syntactically longer sentences in apologies compared to their older colleagues to show more respect. The study was conducted in Women Campus, and it is recommended to implement it on a larger scale with more participants to get more complete results.

The global trend of accelerating scientific and technological progress, the introduction of information technologies, and the transformation of the vocational education system require the development of professional and general cultural competencies in future specialists. The purpose of the study was to scientifically substantiate, create and experimentally test a theoretical model of the formation of a research function in future teachers of vocational training. The methods employed in this research was complementary research methods: theoretical (analysis of scientific literature on the research problem; theoretical modeling, analysis, generalization, comparison, systematization, construction of the process of forming scientific and professional competencies of future teachers); empirical (questionnaire, interview, testing, cross-sectional method); statistical (processing of research materials, primary statistical processing, correlation analysis, analysis of the results of experimental activities). The result of this study showed that the problem of studying and designing a system of pedagogical conditions for the formation of research culture is relevant in the context of the introduction of innovative technologies.

Research on the discursive features of graffiti in institutional settings is in its infancy and few studies have investigated the phenomenon and its implications in educational contexts. In this paper, we report on a study in which we employed systemic functional linguistics (Halliday in Learning how to mean, Edward Arnold, 1975). to probe communicative functions and gender differences in Iranian university student graffiti that appeared in all-male and all-female locations. The data comprised authentic instances of graffiti generated by students, analysis of which suggests that male and female university students each have their own distinctive motives for using graffiti, as realised in significant differences observed in the context-specific functions they perform. Graffiti pieces represented a distinctive and meaningful way of communicating, and its most salient features were creativity, simplicity and variation. Indications are that university students' graffiti reflects psychological and social challenges, and the thoughts, attitudes and feelings expressed through it serve students' personal and interactional purposes.

A women's university in Minnesota responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest in the Twin Cities provides a setting to explore ways in which critical, interdisciplinary, and collaborative campus approaches to virtual community-engaged courses and research bring focus to student learning and broaden the scope of collective university impact on urgent and emerging community issues. Three campus community engagement initiatives focusing on racial housing segregation, voting rights, and incarcerated women show the interplay and cumulative impact of curricular, cocurricular, and campuswide responses to systemic injustice. Drawing on interviews with faculty members, student evaluations, and community partner reflections, the author reflects on what can be learned from the adaptations represented in these three community-engaged initiatives during a time of crisis with critical and collective community and campus response.

This research yields a review on demotivation among students due to poor language skills resulting in less participation in classrooms. It provides code-switching, the alternating use of languages in the discourse, as a solution to this problem. It is mixed-method research in which the data was collected from university teachers and students on a survey. The study followed Fairclough's model of Critical Discourse Analysis and helped reach conclusions regarding the use of code-switching in classes. It finds out that our university teachers are already using code-switching in their classes to help reduce foreign language anxiety and motivate learners towards learning. The study also highlighted the possible harm code-switching may bring to the students: students suffer in the long run due to their reliance on the usage of code-switching, and this complete dependency ultimately results in poor language skills development. Thus, the study recommends that teachers be careful and judicious in the use of code-switching in classes and that too only in the initial phase of university education.

The Swinney Conservatory of Music at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri has a long history with unique beginnings. After the Civil War, Central College (Central Methodist's original name) grew alongside a "Female Seminary," Howard-Payne Female College. Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the two schools developed their own distinct musical cultures with Howard-Payne faculty developing a music curriculum, and Central students forming their own musical ensembles. When the schools merged in 1923 these two cultures united to create a conservatory of music at a time when many other American conservatories were being established. Just before the merger, Kansas City banker Edward Fletcher Swinney, who had strong family ties to the Fayette area and a history of philanthropy towards causes in Missouri education, donated $35,000 to Howard-Payne College for the construction of the conservatory building that would eventually bear his name. This article focuses on the early history of both Central College and Howard-Payne Female College, the role that music played at both schools (as a curricular and non-curricular activity) and the events leading to the formation of Central College's music curriculum and construction of the Swinney Conservatory.

This study is descriptive quantitative research by using a test to collect the data needed. Iraqi English as a foreign language (EFL) students face difficulties in differentiating between using prepositions correctly. This study has been performed in the Department of English at College of Education for Women, University of Baghdad, to diagnosis the difficulties of English prepositions that face Iraqi first-year students at the University since multi-uses and meanings of prepositions. For Iraqi EFL students, prepositions regarded as a problematic criterion. This study aims at examining the problems that EFL students commit mistakes in using English prepositions of place "on." It also highlights the causes of those problems. Correct handling proposition is not because most of them have different functions straightforward, and different prepositions have the same uses. For this reason, the researcher adopted pre and post-tests to evaluate the output of the means of the students' results. The researcher used SPSS to analyze data.

This study aimed to assess the impact of problem-based learning (PBL) on students' achievement in mechanical waves among secondary schools in South Western Uganda. Four hundred and nineteen students (419) from 19 schools were involved in this study. A quasi-experimental research method was employed through Solomon's four-group design. Form six physics students were randomly allocated to the experimental group exposed to PBL and the control group exposed to traditional instructional methods (TIM). A Mechanical Wave Conceptual Survey (MWCS) was administered twice as a pre- and post-test to both groups. Exposition to these instructions lasted three and half months. The study found that students' achievements in waves improved in the PBL than in the TIM learning environment, supported by the large effect size and high learning gains in the experimental group than those in the control group. Specifically, among groups offered both pre- and post-test during Solomon's four-group sampling at the post-test stage, the experimental group achieved higher than the control group. Further analysis among factors such as gender difference, age difference, subjects' combination, single girls alongside mixed schools, and government or private owned schools were analyzed, and practical implications such as teacher's adaptation of PBL were recommended.

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) integrate an authentic research experience for students into a laboratory course. CUREs provide many of the same benefits to students as individual faculty-mentored research experiences. However, faculty experiences in teaching CUREs are not as well understood. There are no studies that compare faculty's anticipated experiences to actual experiences, and little comparison of the faculty experience by institution. Through interviews with eight biology faculty from four institutions, the faculty experience in implementing a CURE in an introductory biology laboratory was explored using qualitative analysis. Institutions included: a small, minority-serving, women's, primarily undergraduate university; a small, residential, primarily undergraduate college; a midsized doctoral university; and a large community college. Interviews were conducted at three time points: before professional development (PD), after the initial semester of teaching the CURE, and after teaching the CURE at least twice (1 year later). Faculty described resources, benefits, challenges, and feelings about teaching the CURE. However, anticipated experiences were often not the same as those actually experienced. There were also institutional differences in resources, benefits, challenges, and feelings. Implications for CURE PD include specific content such as strategies for teaching effective research group work, development of student proposals, and student time management.

The present study aims to explore Nearpod as a tool to promote active learning in higher education. In this study, Nearpod is regarded as a tool that can be used to enhance teaching and learning for those lectures provided by male instructors to female students at Sharoura College of Science and Arts, Najran University. Hence, the Nearpod is integrated with video-conference learning system which is used as distance learning system to provide lectures by male lecturers to female students who study at a separate campus. Consequently, students' own devices have been used to fulfil learning activities during classes. The author utilized the mainly quantitative research method and designed an electronic learning questionnaire applied to (74) female students. The findings of the study showed that the affordances of Nearpod and the BYOD model have promoted active learning in the classroom. Students were very satisfied with integrated learning environment, and they commended Nearpod in all courses specially those ones taught by video-conference learning system.

Interlanguage fossilization is a crucial dilemma that foreign language learners may fall in. The problem of the present study is shown clearly in the answers of Iraqi students of Master of Arts in the College of Education for Women University of Baghdad. In spite of all the previous years of studying English language, some still have the problem of fossilized active and passive simple present tense. The present study aims at shedding light on the reasons behind the Iraqi students' problem. An error analysis is applied to critically examine the students' answers in their final course exam of two courses namely; pragmatics and discourse analysis. Depending on Selinker's model (1972) of error analysis, students errors are all traced back to the language transfer of their native language. Among the results of analysis the researchers have arrived at a suitable solution for the current problem embodied by Sharwood's Consciousness-Raising Approach (1981). It is recommended as a psycholinguistic model for defossilization. It is very suitable for mentally matured learners and help to solve the dilemma.

Women's universities are common in South Asian countries, such as Pakistan, where females are at a disadvantage. These universities are agencies of freedom for female academics, as they provide a favorable environment that enhances the performance of and opens doors for egalitarianism and prosperity for women. Nevertheless, research productivity among female academics remains an ongoing issue due to many factors, including multiple family and work responsibilities. An exploratory case study was conducted at one of the women's universities in Pakistan to more closely explore this experience. In the current study, preference theory was used as a theoretical framework to explore female faculty's research productivity while simultaneously meeting their family/work responsibilities. The study provides robust and promising observations, which have implications for academia, policy-makers, and scholars.

Using focus groups and interviews, this study investigates the information practices of 23 LGBTQIA+ students attending Morehouse College and Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Responses suggest that students rely heavily on peer support and word of mouth for information seeking and sharing. Social media seems to play a large role in sharing information on campus, even for students who are not active on social media platforms. And students' personalities (such as level of extroversion) may indirectly impact the amount of information they receive. Overall, these students seemed to face the challenge of being accepted for who they were on campus, which may have negatively impacted their information exchanges.

The present research aims to examine the effect of reflective teaching practices on prospective teachers' performance. Reflective teaching practice helps teachers to plan, implement and improve their performance by rethinking about their strengths and weaknesses. An experimental study within an action research was conducted by the researchers. All prospective teachers of sixth semester in a women university's teacher education program were the population of the study. From total 40 students, 20 students were taken as experimental group and the rest of 20 students were taken as the control group. During the action research, a cyclic process of producing a module, training teachers for the reflective practices and then observing them during their practicum for replication of reflective practice was done by the researchers. The researchers used a set of tests and a rubric for assessing prospective teachers' performance before, during and after their training as well as their teaching practice. Finally, the module was modified with the help of findings. It was found that the training had improved the skills and performance of teachers during training as they revised and modified their teaching strategies through reflective practice. However, they were not able to practice all of the reflective skills in their practicum. The training module was revised in the light of findings and microteaching strategies were further improved. The study has implications for teacher training programs to include reflective practice training modules as part of their course work for refining their practicum.

The present study carries out to investigate and identify the communication problems that affecting the Teaching/Learning process of ELT. It aims to help teachers and learners to know the cause of these problems and to use and practice (IPA) in English pronunciation. It also sheds light on the most common mistakes of English sounds in relation to their spellings. That the teacher's knowledge of these errors makes him/her, able to avoid them. The researcher investigates the topic title: Challenges of teaching communication to Arab students. As a type of problems affecting the Teaching/Learning process of ELT. She follows an experimental design method to achieve this purpose. The subjects for the study were undergraduate students from University of Majmaah (Hotat Sudair College of Science and Humanities for girls). With the sample of two groups of fifty students of the same sex, standard, number, and degree of education. A case study in Hotat Sudair College for girls, to collect data from the subjects by observation through an oral test and statistical analysis. The study arrives at the following results: Only 13% of students care for segmental phonemes. Only 21% of students care for the correct pronunciation of words. Few learners use dictionaries to check English words' sound in their daily presentations. On the other hand, care for transcriptions of sounds when speaking. Many students lack the basics that are supposed to be learned for acceptable pronunciation then mispronounce words. Then the researcher suggests some steps. She also finds new ideas for further investigations to improve the teaching/learning process and to achieve the aims of English communication.

In this exploratory study, the author examines both students' and teachers' perceptions of Moxtra, a cross-platform cloud collaboration service, as a blended learning tool in a language course. Participants were 242 first-year students studying General English and 8 teachers at the Bunkyo English Communication Centre (BECC) at Hiroshima Bunkyo Women's University in Japan. Both students and teachers were given an iPad self-efficacy survey along with a Moxtra Perceptions and Attitudes questionnaire with student survey results being followed by principal components analysis. Findings showed positive indicators regarding the potential for Moxtra in a language learning context, not only as a tool to support blended learning, but also as a tool to support teachers in a collaborative working environment. With that said, the results also indicate that for Moxtra to reach its full potential, students need to be inculcated, nurtured and encouraged to engage fully with the application. Similarly, teachers must also be encouraged to utilize Moxtra's many features with their students in order to benefit from all of its affordances. The study provides both curriculum developers and language instructors with insights into the adoption of Moxtra in an EFL context.

Prior investigations of the academic performance of student athletes have yielded mixed results: while the NCAA's large scale surveys point to classroom success, other researchers have documented academic underperformance by student athletes. The purpose of this study was to examine the grades and the time budgets of student athletes at a NCAA Division III university for women. Results indicated that athletes earned higher grades in anatomy and physiology and had higher cumulative grade point averages than their non-athlete peers. Surveys suggested that, during the season, these student athletes typically spent about 20 hours per week on athletics and a similar amount of time on academics. While they viewed this time allocation as nearly ideal, faculty members thought students should be spending twice as much time on academics as they do on sport. Implications for student advising and faculty attitudes toward athletes are discussed.

The focus of the present study was to investigate the relationship between leadership styles of principals and job satisfaction of teachers in women colleges in the province of Punjab. This study was designed to identify the leadership styles of principals practiced by them in colleges for women and to find out the relationship between leadership styles and level of job satisfaction. The data were collected by using the Survey method from the selected sample comprised of 1005 college teachers from 100 colleges all over the Punjab. Leadership style was identified using leadership style questionnaire and job satisfaction was measured by using job satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed with the help of descriptive and inferential statistics. The major findings revealed that democratic leadership style is the most practiced leadership style in women colleges and this style has a positive and significant correlation with job satisfaction. Democratic leadership style also has a positive effect on teachers' job satisfaction.

COVID-19, which has become a worldwide pandemic, prompted various healthcare organizations to take measures to stop or slow its spread. These measures require behavioral change. According to the health belief model, knowledge and awareness are needed to establish an assessment of threat and determine whether a behavior will be changed. Since the situation is related to a viral infection, it is expected that people with health backgrounds will have more knowledge and awareness about COVID-19. This study aims to compare the levels of COVID-19 knowledge and awareness of faculty, staff, and students in health sciences and non-health sciences disciplines at an all-female college in Dubai. This will help anticipate the risk for individuals, and predict compliance with regulations. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered online questionnaire. The results were analyzed using chi-square or Fisher's exact test. Participants' knowledge and awareness regarding contagiousness, transmission, incubation period, recovery and mortality rate, susceptibility of elderly people, and the stay-at-home policy were generally high, regardless of their background. This high level of knowledge could be attributed to the rapid dissemination of information through social media. Participants from the health sciences were significantly more knowledgeable about certain preventive measures, the causative pathogen, and its transmission through animals (p < 0.05). Overall, there was a high level of knowledge and awareness among the participants, regardless of their background, yet there are some areas that needs enhancement. Assessing knowledge and awareness is important for ensuring that people understand and change their behavior to mitigate its spread.

This article explores the opportunities and challenges created by teaching a General English (GE) course at an Iranian university based on New Literacy Studies (NLS). Over a whole semester and relying on various types of qualitative data, we examined how NLS-based pedagogy can be received as an alternative to mainstream GE instruction that is mainly based on traditional teaching of skills and components. Several bodies of data were gathered and explored based on a grounded theoretical approach. A thematic structure emerged from data analysis under two themes: Opportunities (comprising Relevance, Non-fragmentation, Discovery, and Assessment) and Challenges (shaped by Preconceptions, Abilities, and Practicalities). Despite its challenges, NLS-based language teaching appeared to provide important possibilities in tackling not only some of the long-held challenges of teaching GE in Iran, but also many of the common language education concerns in contexts where students come from diverse linguistic, educational, and sociocultural backgrounds.

College students are directly immersed in the Age of Distraction brought on by advances in technology and information overload. During the COVID-19 pandemic, students also reported unprecedented stress and anxiety. In this research, I studied the experiences of 61 undergraduate and graduate students at a private college by starting classes with a brief meditation using a Tibetan Singing Bowl as an "attention bridge" to transition from outside life to classroom instruction. Findings suggest that students believe the pre-class meditation produced states of calmness, helped reset their minds, and created a more supportive learning environment, though a smaller number experienced difficulty with the practice or reported no benefit.

To explore the myriad ways in which systemic racism diminishes chemistry, and to recommend changes to our home department, a seminar-style course was created that provided a structured venue in which to collaborate with students. The course was created by the department chair, after reflecting on the Black Lives Matter message that it was time for white people to do some of the work to educate others about systemic racism. This relatively low stakes course (only one credit, pass/fail grading mode) successfully created a space for intense conversation, reflection, increased understanding of some of the aspects of racism in chemistry, as well as the impetus for institutional change. A description of the course, along with student opinions and cofacilitator reflections, is presented.

General causality orientation is a mini-theory within the self-determination theory (STD). The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of general causality orientations (autonomous, controlled, and impersonal) on perceived stress and self-esteem among students in a women-only college. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected through a questionnaire administered to students (n = 132) of a small women-only university in Roanoke, Virginia, USA. The survey included questions on the three general causality orientations, perceived stress, and self-esteem; the survey also included questions on student satisfaction, financial resources, and academic performance, used as control variables in the study. Findings: Autonomous orientation was not significantly related to self-esteem or perceived stress. Controlled orientation negatively influences self-depreciation. Finally, impersonal orientation positively influenced self-depreciation and negatively affected self-confidence. Practical implications: Faculty and administrators in women-only universities should be encouraged to implement programs that strengthen the sense of optimism among female students. Student support services that emphasize enhancing autonomous orientation could be even more helpful by offering interventions that help students overcome their impersonal orientation. Originality/value: While previous studies have concentrated on autonomous orientation, this study provides recommendations for overcoming impersonal orientation among female undergraduate students in women-only colleges to enhance self-esteem and reduce stress.

Embracing an ethos of sharing music and practices across cultural boundaries, the multicultural vision of music (teacher) education has paid scarce attention to the paradox of freedom that arises between such freedoms and the complex politics that frame and constrain teachers' choices and values. In this article, we explore these demands of professional reflexivity through an instrumental case study of music teacher educators working in an all-female, Ultra-Orthodox Jewish music teacher education programme in Israel. Through a thematic analysis of data generated together with six teacher educators, we illustrate how their context-responsive approaches to developing programme visions engage with processes of censorship and cultural translation, as teachers work to align their professional boundaries within established religious boundaries. This boundary-matching and hybridity required may be seen to result in intense processes of professional reflexivity that raises questions as to how all teacher education programme visions might engage with the moral order of a society and highlights the need for international music teacher education to develop a critical, reflexive awareness of how values shape professional work.

Short-term, faculty-led study abroad programs are increasingly featured in higher education internationalization efforts. As noted in the literature, such programs can aid in the development of varied student outcomes, including developing global citizenship. This paper presents an examination of the Global Engagement Seminar (GES) program, a short-term, faculty-led program at a private women's liberal arts college that has expressed a firm commitment to internationalization. A quasi-experimental design was employed to examine whether participation in the GES program influenced participants' antecedents, identification, and pro-social values of global citizenship (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller 2013a), and how the relationships compare with those of a matched comparison sample. The results of the survey indicated that GES completion moderated some but not all of the paths in the global citizenship model. Completing a GES was associated with non-significant relations among the moderated paths, a finding that emphasizes the need for a nuanced discussion of the complex relationship between short-term study abroad and global citizenship. Implications for faculty-led global engagement programs that aim to promote global citizenship among undergraduates in liberal arts contexts are discussed.

Nontraditional women students, defined as older than 24 years, parents, or veterans, compose a fast-growing higher education population. Many face identity-related challenges when interacting with advisors. From 2 northeastern U.S. women's colleges, 42 nontraditional women students participated in phenomenological interviews focused on their advising experiences, including the way advisors engaged with their identities. We classified 6 themes, 3 positive (guidance, identity recognition, advocacy) and 3 negative (indifference, identity marginalization, gatekeeping), that underscored the centrality of advisor engagement with identity for advisee-defined experiences. Advisors encouraged nontraditional women when recognizing intersectional identities as assets but also marginalized students through stereotyping or communicating low expectations. We highlight implications for future research and practice in this domain.

Classroom management procedures assume an indispensable part in upgrading learners' learning. Classroom administration involves the exercises to arrange and guide classes to accomplish particular objectives. To keep up a positive learning condition in the classroom is instructor obligation. The principle point of the review was to investigate the relationship between classroom administration methodologies with scholarly execution of understudies. This study was quantitative in nature. Survey method was utilized to gather information from respondents. A sample of 370 teachers was selected from all male and female public colleges of Lahore. A five point Likert type scale was used to collect data. Different test Mean, t-test and Pearson-r were applied to analyze the data. The major finding of the study indicate that there was a positive relationship between teachers' classroom management strategies and the performance or achievement of the students. A finding of the study also revealed that there was a positive relationship between teaching methods being used and achievement of learners.
