We select and characterise a sample of massive (log(M$_{*}/$M$_{\odot})>10.6$) quiescent galaxies (QGs) at $33$. We compute median rest-frame SEDs for our sample and find the median quiescent galaxy at $3, Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures + appendix. Accepted for publication in AJ. Protoclusters of galaxies have been found in the last quarter century. However, most of them have been found through the overdensity of star-forming galaxies, and there had been no known structures identified by multiple spectroscopically confirmed quiescent galaxies at $z>2.5$. In this letter, we report the discovery of an overdense structure of massive quiescent galaxies with the spectroscopic redshift $z=2.77$ in the COSMOS field, QO-1000. We first photometrically identify this structure as a $4.2\sigma$ overdensity with 14 quiescent galaxies in $7\times4\ {\rm pMpc^2}$ from the COSMOS2020 catalog. We then securely confirm the spectroscopic redshifts of 4 quiescent galaxies by detecting multiple Balmer absorption lines with Keck/MOSFIRE. All the spectroscopically confirmed members are massive ($\log{(M_\star/M_\odot)}>11.0$) and located in a narrow redshift range ($2.7668$ times denser than in the general field. In addition, we confirm that they form a red sequence in the $J-K_s$ color. This structure's halo mass is estimated as $\log{(M_{\rm halo}/M_\odot)}>13.2$ from their stellar mass. Similar structures found in the IllustrisTNG simulation are expected to evolve into massive galaxy clusters with $\log{(M_{\rm halo}/M_\odot)}\geq14.8$ at $z=0$. These results suggest that QO-1000 is a more mature protocluster than the other known protoclusters. High-redshift dusty star-forming galaxies with very high star formation rates (500 -- 3000 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) are key to understanding the formation of the most extreme galaxies in the early Universe. Characterising the gas reservoir of these systems can reveal the driving factor behind the high star formation. Using molecular gas tracers like high-J CO lines, neutral carbon lines and the dust continuum, we can estimate the gas density and radiation field intensity in their interstellar media. In this paper, we present high resolution ($\sim$0.4$^{\prime\prime}$) observations of CO(7-6), [CI](2-1) and dust continuum of 3 lensed galaxies from the SPT-SMG sample at $z\sim$ 3 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Our sources have high intrinsic star-formation rates ($>$850 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$) and rather short depletion timescales ($, 29 pages, 26 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A. We present a detailed analysis of the ionization and thermal structure of the intergalactic medium (IGM) around a high-redshift QSO using a large suite of cosmological, multi-frequency radiative transfer (RT) simulations, exploring the contribution from galaxies as well as the QSO, and the effect of X-rays and secondary ionization. We show that in high-z QSO environments both the central QSO and the surrounding galaxies concertedly control the reionization morphology of hydrogen and helium and have a non-linear impact on the thermal structure of the IGM. A QSO imprints a distinctive morphology on H II regions if its total ionizing photon budget exceeds that of the surrounding galaxies since the onset of hydrogen reionization; otherwise, the morphology shows little difference from that of H II regions produced only by galaxies. In addition, the spectral shape of the collective radiation field from galaxies and QSOs controls the thickness of the I-fronts. While a UV-obscured QSO can broaden the I-front, the contribution from other UV sources, either galaxies or unobscured QSO, is sufficient to maintain a sharp I-front. X-rays photons from the QSO are responsible for a prominent extended tail of partial ionization ahead of the I-front. QSOs leave a unique imprint on the morphology of He II / He III regions. We suggest that, while the physical state of the IGM is modified by QSOs, the most direct test to understand the role of galaxies and QSOs during reionization is to perform galaxy surveys in a region of sky imaged by 21 cm tomography., 19 pages, 22 figures, submitted

We present the largest high-redshift (3 0 at z > 3. We compute the number counts in the observed 0.5-2 keV band, finding a decline in the number of sources at z > 3 and constraining phenomenological models of the X-ray background. We compute the AGN space density at z. > 3 in two different luminosity bins. At higher luminosities (logL(2-10 keV) > 44.1 erg s(-1)), the space density declines exponentially, dropping by a factor of similar to 20 from z similar to 3 to z similar to 6. The observed decline is similar to 80% steeper at lower luminosities (43.55 erg s(-1) 44.1 erg s(-1), unobscured and obscured objects may have different evolution with redshift, with the obscured component being three times higher at z similar to 5. Finally, we compare our space density with predictions of quasar activation merger models, whose calibration is based on optically luminous AGNs. These models significantly overpredict the number of expected AGNs at logL (2-10 keV) > 44.1 erg s(-1) with respect to our data.

We present VLT/X-Shooter and MUSE spectroscopy of a faint F814W = 28.60 +/- 0.33 (M-UV = -17.0), low-mass (less than or similar to 10(7)M(circle dot)), and compact (R-eff = 62 pc) freshly star-forming galaxy at z = 3.1169 magnified (16x) by the Hubble Frontier Fields galaxy cluster Abell S1063. Gravitational lensing allows for a significant jump toward lowluminosity regimes, in moderately high-resolution spectroscopy (R = lambda/d lambda similar to 3000-7400). We measured C IV lambda 1548, 1550, He II lambda 1640, OIII] lambda 1661, 1666, CIII]lambda lambda 1907, 1909, H beta, [O III] lambda lambda 4959, 5007 emission lines with FWHM less than or similar to 50 km s(-1) and (de-lensed) fluxes spanning the interval 1.0 x 10(-19)-2 x 10(-18) erg s(-1) cm(-2) at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) = 4-30. The double-peaked Ly alpha emission with Delta v(red -blue) = 280(+/- 7) km s(-1) and delensed fluxes 2.4((blue))vertical bar 8.5((red)) x 10(-18) erg s(-1) cm(-2) (S/N = 38((blue))vertical bar 110((red)) indicate a low column density of neutral hydrogen gas consistent with a highly ionized interstellar medium as also inferred from the large [O III]lambda 5007/[O II] lambda 3727 > 10 ratio. We detect C IV lambda 1548, 1550 resonant doublet in emission, each component with FWHM less than or similar to 45 km s(-1) and redshifted by + 51(+/- 10) km s(-1) relative to the systemic redshift. We interpret this as nebular emission tracing an expanding optically thin interstellar medium. Both C IV lambda 1548, 1550 and He II lambda 1640 suggest the presence of hot and massive stars (with a possible faint active galactic nucleus). The ultraviolet slope is remarkably blue, beta = -2.95 +/- 0.20 (F-lambda = lambda(beta)), consistent with a dust-free and young less than or similar to 20 Myr galaxy. Line ratios suggest an oxygen abundance 12 + log(O/H)

We are witnessing an early episode of star formation in which a relatively low N H I and negligible dust attenuation might favor a leakage of ionizing radiation. This galaxy currently represents a unique low-luminosity reference object for future studies of the reionization epoch with the James Webb Space Telescope.
