The accessibility of tourist signage was investigated in this study by utilising the stakeholder theory, concepts of tourist signage, and universal design (UD). Twenty-eight tourists who had visited Macao's heritage sites were interviewed. Results showed that regardless of individual differences in physical abilities and characteristics, tourist signage was considered important to the interviewees to know the direction to attractions and service facilities. Signage was particularly important for visiting Macao's heritage sites, which required tourists to stroll through several alleys and make many turns – including those who had weaker physical abilities such as people with disabilities and elders, as well as mothers with children. Through the interviews, the strengths and weaknesses of the tourist signage was identified, and accessibility for tourists was evaluated based on the UD principles. Results revealed that these strengths and weaknesses were compliant or noncompliant with certain UD principles in different ways and led to several tourism experiences, attitudes, and behavioural outcomes. The study of linguistic landscapes (LL) examines the use of signage in public spaces, often with a focus on the use of non-majority languages. The main goals of this project are to map, quantify, and analyze signage in Spanish within Tuscaloosa County, AL, an emerging site of Spanish language use which differs from the large urban places often studied in the LL literature. Photographs of public signage in Spanish were taken and uploaded to an ArcGIS Field Maps app to allow for both geolocation of the image and tagging of the image for specific linguistic and visual characteristics, which are subsumed under multimodality. Multimodality refers to the interaction of the linguistic code with other modes of communication such as images, colors, flags, and other cultural objects to make meaning in a given LL text. Within the multimodality framework, we examine the use of Spanish by itself or with English, location of the signage, communicative functions (symbolic, informative), and the combination of multimodal resources to index the actors originating the text and their intended audience. This article addresses the issue of motivated signs in semiotic theory and practice. It examines two influential versions of the term, Saussure's and Kress's, focussing on and triggered by Kress's influence. It claims Kress's importance lies not so much in theory as such, as in his analytic practice, multimodal analysis, as underpinned by this theory. Accordingly, it deploys a version of this practice on Kress as he is 'doing theory'. It uses his late work Multimodality (Kress, Gunther. 2010. Multimodality. London: Bloomsbury) as the main source of examples of theory and objects of analysis, and applies a similar approach to Saussure. The outcome is a theoretically-informed corpus including many examples of motivated signs in use. From this empirical corpus the article makes some indicative generalizations about the role of these signs in semiotic practice. It shows how pervasive these signs are, and how important these are for analysis. It connects them with a crucial but under-researched aspect of all social uses of meaning, the modality meta-function (checking validity/modality of all semiotic acts), in which motivated signs play an essential role. Signage is an important medium for individuals to obtain spatial environmental information conveniently and accurately. However, most previous studies focus on signage design for individuals with normal vision, neglecting the specific requirements of those with low vision. Therefore, these signage designs lacking universality restrict the activities of individuals with low vision in public spaces and increase their risks. This study aims to conduct quantitative research on signage size and brightness contrast for low vision individuals. A virtual simulation experimental platform investigated how individuals interpret and react to signage. Two sets of experiments were carried out in Tianjin Key Laboratory of Healthy Habitat and Smart Technology to evaluate the effects of signage size and brightness contrast on response time and accuracy among a total of 139 participants. The results showed that the signage size should be at least 7% of the reading distance to meet the wayfinding needs of low vision individuals. It involves understanding one's current location, determining the desired destination and choosing a path to get there. Wayfinding design plays a significant role in enabling users to navigate an environment with ease and reach their desired destinations in a timely manner. However, poorly designed wayfinding systems can lead to confusion, stress and insecurity, which negatively impacts the user experience. This research paper explores the concept of wayfinding in educational buildings limited to universities, and its potential to enhance the user experience of students, faculty and visitors. Wayfinding can be a challenging task in large and complex buildings such as educational institutions. The study investigates the different factors that can affect wayfinding in educational buildings, including signage, lighting, spatial layout and technology. The paper presents case studies of two university buildings to investigate how a wayfinding system can improve user experience. The findings show that efficient wayfinding can improve the user experience greatly by reducing confusion, boosting efficiency and increasing overall happiness. The paper concludes with guidelines for educational institutions to improve wayfinding in their buildings with the help of signages and enhance user experience.

This article discusses the design and field installation of automated electronic Asian Elephant signage for human safety. The increasing human-elephant interactions in Asia and Africa have led to conflicts and fatalities. The article proposes the use of electronic elephant signage (EES) to mark elephant crossing points and warn vehicles and people of potential conflicts. The EES is an affordable and technically superior solution that has been successfully installed in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in India. This article clears a path for employing the affirmative way of interpreting Kant's general theory of religion as a guidepost for twenty-first century religious practitioners. Before attempting such an employment, I correct several misconceptions regarding the affirmative way of interpreting Kant's theory that, if adopted as mainstream, would risk weakening its universal applicability. With this purpose in mind, I consider and respond to a misplaced criticism of my interpretation of Kant's theory of grace, advanced by Douglas McGaughey in 2013. I then assess the current state of a debate that has arisen between several key affirmative interpreters, concerning Kant's reference to the two "experiments" that guide the argument in his Religion. I give special attention to Lawrence Pasternack's 2017 attempt to "dismantle" this whole line of interpretation as one that "may very well not be worth our time." After identifying several serious flaws in Pasternack's argument, I conclude by backing a better alternative developed by Brandon Love. By clearing away two very different sorts of potential roadblocks that could stand in the way of a reader of Kant gaining a fair understanding of the affirmative approach to interpreting his theory of religion, these arguments prepare the way for a concluding attempt to catch a glimpse of how Kant's theory of religious judgment (especially his four guidelines for designing the constitution of a church), if adopted widely by practitioners of various historical religions, could benefit the fractured world we find ourselves in, a quarter of the way through the twenty-first century. An optimized color‐reflective LCD with high optical performances and cost‐effective structure has been proposed by association with cholesteric liquid crystal technology. By way of a color dithering algorithm, the cholesteric liquid crystal display (Ch‐LCD) can visualize a 24‐bit RGB color pixel and display over 16 million colors. Moreover, the waveform module (WF) is applied to emulate the display timing controller, which is a lowcost and more accessible way to drive the Ch‐LCD. In this paper, we demonstrated a 13.3‐inch passive matrix (PM) driven Ch‐LCD with a high resolution of 202 PPI, high reflectance of 30%, and high color gamut of 20%, which is suitable for electronic signage applications. Before the 1990s, the phenomenon of organizational improvisation (OI) as a distinct process was poorly understood and undertheorized in the organization theory, management, and strategy literatures, in spite of its pervasive occurrence in practice and its impressionistic mentions in interesting work. As editors of the recent Routledge Companion to Organizational Improvisation, we believe that ongoing phenomenon-focused work that builds on granular data and unexpected discoveries represents a crucial ongoing frontier for OI research. In this Guidepost, we illustrate the crucial role of phenomenon-focused research activities in the early exploration and ongoing work to understand OI, and flag four especially promising areas for ongoing discoveries: premises, practical skills, outcomes, and micro-processes. For each, we highlight specific issues where new exploratory work – drawing on quantitative and qualitative data—can offer a springboard to new, impactful understanding and action. This essay is a companion to Karl Weick's recent Guidepost where he reflects on the 30th anniversary of his 1993 ASQ Mann Gulch Disaster paper, which played a key role in legitimizing deeper scholarly attention to OI. Hydrogen gas is attractive as a clean fuel source if it can be produced efficiently without relying on fossil fuels. Biohydrogen production using photosynthetic bacteria may enable environmentally friendly hydrogen production but is currently limited by factors such as low oxygen tolerance. In this study, we isolate a new strain of bacteria that can produce hydrogen under aerial-phase conditions compared with those under liquid-phase conditions in a nitrogen gas or an argon gas atmosphere. Bacterial strains were cultured from scrapings taken from a steel signboard. Investigation of the hydrogen production of the strains under aerial- and liquid-phase conditions and subsequent DNA sequencing led to identification of the bacterium Cereibacter sp. KGU-NF001. Aerial-phase conditions were achieved by filter membranes with the bacterial strains and placing the membranes on medium-soaked cotton wool. The gas atmosphere affected the behavior of the isolated bacterial strains under both aerial- and liquid-phase conditions. Cereibacter sp. KGU-NF001 showed promising oxygen tolerance and was able to maintain hydrogen production of 1.33 mL/mg/d even when the atmosphere contained 12% oxygen. Our findings illustrate that biohydrogen production may be achieved by photosynthetic bacteria under oxygen-containing aerial-phase conditions, indicating a possible pathway to help lower our reliance on fossil fuels. This research study aimed to evaluate the legibility of Arabic road signage using an eye-tracking approach within a virtual reality (VR) environment. The study was conducted in a controlled setting involving 20 participants who watched two videos using the HP Omnicept Reverb G2. The VR device recorded eye gazing details in addition to other physiological data of the participants, providing an overlay of heart rate, eye movement, and cognitive load, which in combination were used to determine the participants' focus during the experiment. The data were processed through a schematic design, and the final files were saved in.txt format, which was later used for data extraction and analysis. Through the execution of this study, it became apparent that employing eye-tracking technology within a VR setting offers a promising method for assessing the legibility of road signs. The outcomes of the current research enlightened the vital role of legibility in ensuring road safety and facilitating effective communication with drivers. Clear and easily comprehensible road signs were found to be pivotal in delivering timely information, aiding navigation, and ultimately mitigating accidents or confusion on the road. As a result, this study advocates for the utilization of VR as a valuable platform for enhancing the design and functionality of road signage systems, recognizing its potential to contribute significantly to the improvement of road safety and navigation for drivers. Tunnel–interchange connecting sections pose significant safety challenges on mountainous expressways due to their high incidence of accidents. Improving road safety necessitates a comprehensive understanding of driver behavior in such areas. This study explores the influences of road characteristics, signage information volume, and traffic conditions on drivers' car-following and lane-changing behavior in tunnel–interchange diverging areas. Utilizing driving data from 25 subjects of 72 simulated road models, driving performance is assessed using the Friedman rank test and multivariate variance analysis. The results highlight the significant influence of both connection distance and signage information load on driving behavior. In tunnel–interchange scenarios, the reduction in velocity increased by 62.61%, and speed variability surged by 61.11%, indicating potential adverse effects on driving stability due to the environmental transitions. Decreased connection distances are associated with reduced lane-changing durations, larger steering angles, and increased failure rates. Furthermore, every two units of increase in signage information leads to a 13.16% rise in maximum deceleration and a 5% increase in time headway. Notably, the signage information volume shows a significant interaction with connection distance (F > 1.60, p < 0.045) for most car-following indicators. Hence, the study recommends a maximum connection distance of 700 m and signage information not exceeding nine units for optimal safety and stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the effectiveness of new point-of-interest (POI) pictograms on tourist maps within the Croatian and Slovenian contexts, focusing on enhancing the tourist experience in urban settings for individuals with specific needs. Despite the widespread use of tourist maps, there is a lack of research evaluating POI pictograms tailored to the needs of tourists with specific dietary, health-related, and sustainable clothing purchases. To fill this gap, we designed six new pictograms in three domains: healthcare, food, and apparel. The pictograms were evaluated using an online questionnaire involving 138 participants with a diverse range of ages and educational backgrounds. The results on comprehension and subjective assessments of the pictograms' qualities revealed insights into the subtle cultural and lifestyle influences on pictogram perception. The findings provide a basis for considering the potential of new pictogram designs in improving navigational experiences with geospatial information and encouraging sustainable tourist behaviors. The purpose of this study is to highlight the linguistic landscape of Lahore (Punjab, Pakistan) by covering the discussion regarding the ways of using English language as nativized and localized version. This study is based on different trends of public of using English language in different ways to advertise their agencies (shop names, business centers etc.). To collect the data, three areas of Lahore were selected based on the convenience sampling technique (as data was homogenous across the city) i.e. Thoker Niaz Baig, Township, Anarkali. Purposive sampling was under consideration as only text-based displays were considered to collect the data which showed the use of English language in them. 60 pictures were taken with the help of a digital camera and were made limited to 52 after the refining process. Blurred and repeated photographs were excluded. Analytical parameters of Cenoz & Gorter (2006) were considered to analyze the data. Some guidance in analysis was taken from the study of Landry & Bourhis (1997) regarding the unit of analysis. Only the text of different signboards was considered to analyze. Results revealed the presence of different nativized ways of using English language i.e. direct use of English, Roman English, transliteration and code-mixed English. The study reveals the patterns which are adopted by the public to use English language to display and advertise their businesses and commercials (printed). For future recommendations, linguistic landscape can be studied from the viewpoint of bi/multilingualism, language policy making, cultural integration and to transpire the novice linguistic patterns. A stereoscopic imaging or holography is a useful technology for a 3D display. These 3D imaging technologies can reconstruct floating volumetric spatial images fly off a displaying screen or a hologram. However a floating and popping up area of reconstructing 3D images is narrow, and the area is restricted between viewing positions and the display or hologram. If you want to make the lengths of popping ups fly off the displaying or holographic screen long, it is necessary to prepare a gigantic displaying unit with the large screen. But such an argument is nonsense even if we can realize such a stupid idea with costing a huge amount of money. To solve these problems, the authors have been starting researches for developing optical unit systems composed of virtual lenses, mirrors or diffusing screens which are virtually arranged and floating in the air. In this paper, the authors describe an aerial reflection screen using soapy water or thin films for aero signage which is floating in the air and enables to make images invisible from back. Abstract Objective Patient violence in emergency departments (EDs) may be prevented with proactive mitigation measures targeting potentially violent patients. We aimed to evaluate the effects of two interventions guided by a validated risk‐assessment tool. Methods A prospective interventional study was conducted among patients ≥10 years who visited two EDs in Michigan, USA, from October 2022 to August 2023. During triage, the ED nurses completed the Aggressive Behavior Risk Assessment Tool for EDs (ABRAT‐ED) to identify high‐risk patients. Following the baseline observational period, interventions were implemented stepwise for the high‐risk patients: phase 1 period with signage posting and phase 2 period with a proactive Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) huddle added to the signage posting. Before ED disposition, any violent events and their severities were documented. The data were retrieved retrospectively after the study was completed. Results Of 77,424 evaluable patients, 546 had ≥1 violent event. The violent event rates were 0.93%, 0.68%, and 0.62% for baseline, phase 1, and phase 2, respectively. The relative risk of violent events for phase 1 compared to the baseline was 0.73 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.59‒0.90; p = 0.003). The relative risk for phase 2 compared to phase 1 was 0.92 (95% CI: 0.76‒1.12; p = 0.418). Conclusion The use of signage posting as a persistent visual cue for high‐risk patients identified by ABRAT‐ED appears to be effective in reducing the overall violent event rates. However, adding proactive BERT huddle to signage posting showed no significant reduction in the violent event rates compared to signage posting alone.

Objective: Navigating hospital environments presents a significant challenge for patients, visitors, and staff, exacerbated by inherent stress of healthcare settings. Beyond easing navigation in complex hospital layouts and instilling confidence, signage system embodies professionalism and care, contributing to brand identity and patient satisfaction. Since hospitals must accommodate an increasingly diverse population, it is critical that signage be designed to be effective and universally comprehensible. The aim of the study was to examine patients’ perceptions of signage systems in a tertiary care teaching hospital, aiming to identify the areas for improvement and enhance overall patient satisfaction. Methods: The cross-sectional study conducted at Government General Hospital, Kakinada from January-March 2024, surveyed 970 patients visiting the outpatient department, using a structured questionnaire. It assessed satisfaction with hospital signage using a Likert scale. Exclusions applied to Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Emergency departments. Data was analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS version 26.0. Results: Patient responses underscore hospital signage's critical role in effectiveness, reliability, and impact. Well- informed patients express higher satisfaction, emphasizing signage's informational role. Strategic placement earns high satisfaction, though reliability concerns exist. Wayfinding effectiveness is moderate. Visibility and readability are crucial, with local language inclusion positively perceived, but clarity enhancements are needed for service awareness. Conclusion: This study revealed moderate patient satisfaction with hospital signage, with higher satisfaction among literate patients, young patients and regular visitors. Significant correlations were noted for literacy, regular visitors, and ease of navigation. Improvements in visibility and readability are needed. The insights from this study will be used by Hospital Administration department to enhance the signages in the hospital.

This study investigates the linguistic landscape of Kotabaru Malang Train Station through qualitative analysis of 41 signs, employing photographic documentation to capture linguistic features and functions. It reveals a prevalence of bilingual signage (Indonesian-English), emphasizing inclusivity and global connectivity. Sign functions include direction, information, advertising, disease prevention, prohibition, and warning, enhancing operational efficiency and passenger safety. Local identity is showcased through signage promoting Malang’s cultural heritage, fostering community pride and visitor engagement. Beyond station management, implications for urban planning and language policy highlight strategies for cultural sustainability and inclusive communication in public spaces. Investigating urban cultural not only enriches the understanding of societal diversity, but also informs inclusive urban development practices and effective public communication strategies. Future research could investigate how changes in government language policies and the integration of digital technologies impact the linguistic landscape and effectiveness of signage at transportation hubs.

This article analyses the linguistic landscape (LL) of tourism in Tanzania, specifically in Arusha Kilimanjaro, and Manyara regions. It seeks to determine language representation, the key actors, and power dynamics between the languages represented in the LL. It collected 258 signs in seven tourist sites in these regions in the Northern Safari Circuit of Tanzania in February and March 2024 using a digital camera. It analysed the data grounded in Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) framework for analysing visual signs. Findings indicate that English monolingual signs are predominant, followed by English and Kiswahili bilingual signs, and finally, Kiswahili monolingual signs. No ethnic community languages (ECLs) are represented on the signs in the studied LL. The data showed that top–down actors favour both English and Kiswahili for profit and pride, whereas bottom–up actors favour only English for profit. English is dominant in both top–down and bottom–up signage, whereas ECLs are conspicuously absent in the LL of tourism sites, implying the need for (i) policy intervention to enhance their presence in the public space and (ii) diversification of tourism marketing strategies to incorporate aspects of ECLs and cultures to attract tourists seeking authentic, varied experiences.

The road transport system is expanding considerably in developing countries. Villages are connecting to major cities for business, education, health, and many other reasons because of road development and smooth transportation. There has been a rise in the number of road accidents observed, caused by abruptly appearing dividers on roads and a lack of required signage systems. This paper discusses scenarios of accidents due to such abruptly appearing dividers and offers a strategy to design appropriate signage to avoid road accidents in the future. It has been observed that permanent or movable arbitrary fixtures, such as a barricade or a small partition block wall, are installed to separate lanes, in addition to white-colored stripes that are typically employed for lane separation on roads. These fixtures, although they are intended as lane-dividing solutions on roads, cause serious, and at times, fatal accidents, due their sudden, uninitiated appearance on the road. To address this problem, alternative signage designs were designed and tested on Indian roads, based on human cognitive responses and visual attention analysis on signage using an eye-tracking method. In addition, the semantic quality and legibility of alternate signage designs were evaluated using a questionnaire to judge their overall efficacy. Educational spaces, both formal and informal, are not always welcoming to queer Métis youth, especially to those youth who connect more to hip-hop cultures than those activities like jigging and beading which are often held up as pillars of Métis culture. This article draws on conversations with youth, conducted as part of doctoral research using a visiting approach to data collection and analyzed using the voice-centered relational method. Through these frameworks, I created guideposts for developing educational spaces which are not just inclusive of but designed for queer Métis youth. Background: A Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Team at a university health science library created a checklist for inclusive language and conducted an assessment of their library's website, LibGuides, and physical and digital signage. Inclusive language was defined as "language that is free from words, phrases or tones that reflect prejudiced, stereotyped or discriminatory views of particular people or groups". Case Presentation: The 32-item checklist facilitated the identification of gendered language, stereotypes, ableist language, racist language, stigmatizing language, slang, acronyms, and out-of-date terminology regarding physical and mental health conditions. From the library's website, 20 instances were noted for which improvements were necessary. Out of the 130 LibGuides reviewed, 23 LibGuides had no changes needed and 107 had changes identified relating to language inclusivity (14 strongly recommended changes and 116 suggested changes). In order to improve tourists' sense of touring experience, this research proposes a signage navigation system for mobile scenic spots. Firstly, the system uses a recurrent neural network algorithm incorporating convolutional neural network for image recognition function to obtain relevant information through image recognition. Then the target localization of the image is performed according to the single-stage target detection algorithm, and the location of the landscape in which the user is located is localized by the recognized image information. The results show that the algorithm can achieve 86.7% recognition accuracy, and it can recognize part of the image samples when the recognition time reaches the range of 0.8 min–1 min. The single-stage target detection algorithm has a localization accuracy of 97.2% with a minimum loss rate of 1.1%. And the algorithm has high average accuracy and full class average accuracy values. Postsecondary science faculty face challenges in balancing the engagement of undergraduates and concomitantly ensuring they gain and retain knowledge, either in standard lectures or labs as well as in outdoor activities. Designing on-campus trails with interpretive signs may provide a unique avenue to inform students across majors of local biodiversity and tie in concepts related to ecology, organismal biology, and conservation. In this article, we evaluate the efficacy of course-specific interpretive signs deployed around a small on-campus natural area to engage first-year students. We assessed students' overall engagement level and retention of information conveyed across specific signs via a student-guided nature walk where students examined signs and answered both a pre- and post-activity survey, rated their favorite sign, and provided a short reflection on this outdoor activity. Students' responses indicated that they retained general information on specific signs, most notably regarding reptiles and what types of mammals are found around campus. Overall, students rated this activity as engaging, with 87.7% combined agreeing or strongly agreeing that signs helped them learn about the biodiversity and ecosystems on campus. The Prince Hypothesis, popularized in the television show The Simpsons, claims that greater visibility reduces vandalism. While environmental criminology makes similar predictions, to date it is unknown how other environmental factors influence this relationship. Using a natural experiment, desks at a public university were systematically assigned to either signage or no signage groups (N = 113). The Canny edge detection algorithm was then used to digitize graffiti, measuring it to the pixel.
