We report on the direct measurement of the electron spin splitting and the accompanying nuclear Overhauser (OH) field, and thus the underlying nuclear spin polarization (NSP) and fluctuation bandwidth, in a single InAs quantum dot under resonant excitation conditions with unprecedented spectral resolution. The electron spin splitting is measured directly via resonant spin-flip single photon Raman scattering detected by superconducting nanowires to generate excitation-emission energy maps. The observed two-dimensional maps reveal an OH field that has a non-linear dependence on excitation frequency. This study provides new insight into earlier reports of so-called avoidance and tracking, showing two distinct NSP responses directly by the addition of a emission energy axis. The data show that the polarization processes depend on which electron spin state is optically driven, with surprising differences in the polarization fluctuations for each case: in one case, a stabilized field characterized by a single-peaked distribution shifts monotonically with the laser excitation frequency resulting in a nearly constant optical interaction strength across a wide detuning range, while in the other case the previously reported avoidance behavior is actually the result of a nonlinear dependence on the laser excitation frequency near zero detuning leading to switching between two distinct mesoscopic nuclear spin states. The magnitude of the field, which is as large as 400 mT, is measured with sub-100 nuclear spin sensitivity. Stable/unstable points of the OH field distribution are observed, resulting from the non-linear feedback loop in the electron-trion-nuclear system. Nuclear spin polarization state switching occurs between fields differing by 160 mT at least as fast as 25 ms. Control experiments indicate that the strain-induced quadrupolar interaction may explain the measured OH fields.

We demonstrate the extension of coherence between all four two-electron spin ground states of an InAs quantum dot molecule (QDM) via non-local suppression of nuclear spin fluctuations in both constituent quantum dots (QDs), while optically addressing only the upper QD transitions. Long coherence times are revealed through dark-state spectroscopy as resulting from nuclear spin locking mediated by the exchange interaction between the QDs. We study a simple, effective and robust method for entangling two separate stationary quantum dot spin qubits with high fidelity using multiphoton Gaussian state. The fluorescence signals from the two dots interfere at a beam splitter. The bosonic nature of photons leads, in analogy with the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect, to selective pairing of photon holes (photon absences in the fluorescent signals). As a result, two odd photon number detections at the outgoing beams herald trion entanglement creation, and subsequent reduction of the trions to the spin ground states leads to spin-spin entanglement. The robustness of the Gaussian states is evidenced by the ability to compensate for photon absorption and noise by a moderate increase in the number of photons at the input. We calculate the entanglement generation rate in the ideal, nonideal and near-ideal detector regimes and find substantial improvement over single-photon schemes in all three regimes. Fast and efficient spin-spin entanglement creation can form the basis for a scalable quantum dot quantum computing network. Our predictions can be tested using current experimental capabilities.

We present a microscopic theory of the nonequilibrium nuclear spin dynamics driven by the electron and/or hole under continuous wave pumping in a quantum dot. We show the correlated dynamics of the nuclear spin ensemble and the electron and/or hole under optical excitation as a quantum feedback loop and investigate the dynamics of the many nuclear spins as a nonlinear collective motion. This gives rise to three observable effects: (i) hysteresis, (ii) locking (avoidance) of the pump absorption strength to (from) the natural resonance, and (iii) suppression (amplification) of the fluctuation of weakly polarized nuclear spins, leading to prolonged (shortened) electron spin coherence time. A single nonlinear feedback function as a "measurement" of the nuclear field operator in the quantum feedback loop is constructed which determines the different outcomes of the three effects listed above depending on the feedback being negative or positive. The general theory also helps to put in perspective the wide range of existing theories on the problem of a single electron spin in a nuclear spin bath., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

In spin-transfer torque (STT) for technological applications, the miniaturization of the magnet may reach the stage of requiring a fully quantum-mechanical treatment. We present an STT theory which uses the quantum macrospin ground and excited (magnon) states of the nanomagnet. This allows for energy and angular momentum exchanges between the current electron and the nano-magnet. We develop a method of magnetization dynamics simulation which captures the heating effect on the magnet by the spin-polarized current and the temperature-dependence in STT. We also discuss the magnetostatics effect on magnon scattering for ferromagnetic relaxation in a thin film. We present a theory of magnetization dynamics driven by spin-polarized current in terms of the quantum master equation. In the spin coherent state representation, the master equation becomes a Fokker-Planck equation, which naturally includes the spin transfer and quantum fluctuation. The current electron scattering state is correlated to the magnet quantum states, giving rise to quantum correction to the electron transport properties in the usual semiclassical theory. We describe a protocol to entangle two qubits at a distance by using resonance fluorescence. The scheme makes use of the postselection of large and distinguishable fluorescence signals corresponding to entangled and unentangled qubit states and has the merits of both high success probability and high entanglement fidelity owing to the multiphoton nature. Our result shows that the entanglement generation is robust against photon fluctuations in the fluorescence signals for a wide range of driving fields. We also demonstrate that this new protocol has an average entanglement duration within the decoherence time of corresponding qubit systems, based on current experimental photon efficiency., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The electron spin state of a singly charged semiconductor quantum dot has been shown to form a suitable single qubit for quantum computing architectures with fast gate times. A key challenge in realizing a useful quantum dot quantum computing architecture lies in demonstrating the ability to scale the system to many qubits. In this letter, we report an all optical experimental demonstration of quantum entanglement between a single electron spin confined to single charged semiconductor quantum dot and the polarization state of a photon spontaneously emitted from the quantum dot's excited state. We obtain a lower bound on the fidelity of entanglement of 0.59, which is 84% of the maximum achievable given the timing resolution of available single photon detectors. In future applications, such as measurement based spin-spin entanglement which does not require sub-nanosecond timing resolution, we estimate that this system would enable near ideal performance. The inferred (usable) entanglement generation rate is 3 x 10^3 s^-1. This spin-photon entanglement is the first step to a scalable quantum dot quantum computing architecture relying on photon (flying) qubits to mediate entanglement between distant nodes of a quantum dot network.

We propose an efficient quantum measurement protocol for the hyperfine interaction between the electron spin and the $^{15}$N nuclear spin of a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center. In this protocol, a sequence of quantum operations of successively increasing duration is utilized to estimate the hyperfine interaction with successively higher precision approaching the quantum metrology limit. This protocol does not need the preparation of the nuclear spin state. In the presence of realistic operation errors and electron spin decoherence, the overall precision of our protocol still surpasses the standard quantum limit.

We demonstrate the suppression of nuclear spin fluctuations in an InAs quantum dot and measure the timescales of the spin narrowing effect. By initializing for tens of milliseconds with two continuous wave diode lasers, fluctuations of the nuclear spins are suppressed via the hole assisted dynamic nuclear polarization feedback mechanism. The fluctuation narrowed state persists in the dark (absent light illumination) for well over one second even in the presence of a varying electron charge and spin polarization. Enhancement of the electron spin coherence time (T2*) is directly measured using coherent dark state spectroscopy. By separating the calming of the nuclear spins in time from the spin qubit operations, this method is much simpler than the spin echo coherence recovery or dynamic decoupling schemes.

We present a feasible scheme for performing an optically controlled phase gate between two conduction electron spin qubits in adjacent self assembled quantum dots. Interaction between the dots is mediated by the tunneling of the valence hole state which is activated only by applying a laser pulse of the right polarization and frequency. Combining the hole tunneling with the Pauli blocking effect, we obtain conditional dynamics for the two quantum dots, which is the essence of our gating operations. Our results are of explicit relevance to the recent generation of vertically stacked self-assembled InAs quantum dots, and show that by a design which avoids unintended dynamics the gate could be implemented in theory in the 10 ps range and with a fidelity over 90%. Our proposal therefore offers an accessible path to the demonstration of ultrafast quantum logic in quantum dots.

A precise time-dependent control of a quantum system relies on an accurate account of the quantum interference among the system, the control and the environment. A diagrammatic technique has been recently developed to precisely calculate this quantum correlation for a fast multimode coherent photon control against slow relaxation, valid for both Markovian and non-Markovian systems. A quantum theory of magnetization dynamics of a nanomagnet as a sequence of scatterings of each electron spin with the macrospin state of the magnetization results in each encounter a probability distribution of the magnetization recoil state associated with each outgoing state of the electron. Coherent control of a spin is limited by both the decoherence due to coupling with the environment and noise coming from the quantized control. The quantum noise study of this system is particularly important in fault tolerant quantum computation where a very high fidelity is demanded. Here, we present a time evolution study of a two level system (TLS) interacting with a laser pulse and the electromagnetic vacuum based on the multimode Jaynes-Cummings model. We develop a diagrammatic formalism in which one can easily identify the coherent Rabi oscillation of the TLS and its relaxation from corresponding diagrams. In the small time limit ($t\ll T_1$), where the noise level is small but still an issue to fault tolerant quantum computing, this method gives a quantitative evaluation of the quantum noise of the TLS under an optical control with an arbitrary pulse shape. Furthermore, this approach can be naturally extended from the Markovian to the non-Markovian regime, resulting in dynamics different from that obtained in the optical Bloch analysis. We propose that an optically excited heavy hole in a quantum dot can drive the surrounding nuclear spins into a quiescent collective state, leading to significantly prolonged coherence time for the electron spin qubit. This provides a general paradigm to combat decoherence by environmental control without involving the active qubit in quantum information processing. It also serves as a unified solution to some open problems brought about by two recent experiments [X. Xu et al., Nature 459, 1105 (2009) and C. We review the progress and main challenges in implementing large-scale quantum computing by optical control of electron spins in quantum dots (QDs). Relevant systems include self-assembled QDs of III-V or II-VI compound semiconductors (such as InGaAs and CdSe), monolayer fluctuation QDs in compound semiconductor quantum wells, and impurity centers in solids such as P-donors in silicon and nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. The decoherence of the electron spin qubits is discussed and various schemes for countering the decoherence problem are reviewed. We put forward designs of local nodes consisting of a few qubits which can be individually addressed and controlled. Remotely separated local nodes are connected by photonic structures (microcavities and waveguides) to form a large-scale distributed quantum system or a quantum network. The operation of the quantum network consists of optical control of a single electron spin, coupling of two spins in a local nodes, optically controlled quantum interfacing between stationary spin qubits in QDs and flying photon qubits in waveguides, rapid initialization of spin qubits, and qubit-specific single-shot non-demolition quantum measurement. The rapid qubit initialization may be realized by selectively enhancing certain entropy dumping channels via phonon or photon baths. The single-shot quantum measurement may be in-situ implemented through the integrated photonic network. The relevance of quantum non-demolition measurement to large-scale quantum computation is discussed. We demonstrate optical control of the geometric phase acquired by one of the spin states of an electron confined in a charge-tunable InAs quantum dot via cyclic 2pi excitations of an optical transition in the dot. In the presence of a constant in-plane magnetic field, these optically induced geometric phases result in the effective rotation of the spin about the magnetic field axis and manifest as phase shifts in the spin quantum beat signal generated by two time-delayed circularly polarized optical pulses. We propose a spin-dependent resonant tunneling structure to efficiently inject spin-polarized current into silicon (Si). By means of a heavily doped polycrystalline Si (Poly-Si) between the ferromagnetic metal (FM) and Si to reduce the Schottky barrier resistance, we estimated raising the tunneling current density up to $10^8$Am$^{-2}$. The small Fermi sea of the charge carriers in Si focuses the tunneling electrons to the resonant spin states within a small region of transverse momentum in the ferromagnet which creates the spin polarization of the current. Because of the large exchange splitting between the spin up and down bands, the decay of the spin current is explained in terms of scattering out of the focused beam. The spin polarization in the current survives only if the thickness of the FM-layer is smaller than the spin-diffusion length estimated from that cause., Comment: 3 pages and 3 figures (new version with improved figures and discussion)

In coherent control, electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations usually cause coherence loss through irreversible spontaneous emission. However, since the dissipation via emission is essentially due to correlation of the fluctuations, when emission ends in a superposition of multiple final states, correlation between different pathways may build up if the "which-way" information is not fully resolved (i.e., the emission spectrum is broader than the transition energy range). Such correlation can be exploited for spin-flip control in a $\Lambda$-type three-level system, which manifests itself as an all-optical spin echo in nonlinear optics with two orders of optical fields saved as compared with stimulated Raman processes. We demonstrate the all-optical ultrafast manipulation and read-out of optical transitions in a single negatively charged self-assembled InAs quantum dot, an important step towards ultrafast control of the resident spin. Experiments performed at zero magnetic field show the excitation and decay of the trion (negatively charged exciton) as well as Rabi oscillations between the electron and trion states. Technological advances allow for tunable lateral confinement of cold dipolar excitons in coupled quantum wells. We consider theoretically the Josephson effect between exciton condensates in two traps separated by a weak link. The flow of the exciton supercurrent is driven by the dipole energy difference between the traps. The Josephson oscillations may be observed after ensemble average of the time correlation of photons separately emitted from the two traps. We show that the correlations in stochastic outputs of time-distributed weak measurements can be used to study the dynamics of an individual quantum object, with a proof-of-principle setup based on small Faraday rotation caused by a single spin in a quantum dot. In particular, the third order correlation can reveal the "true" spin decoherence, which would otherwise be concealed by the inhomogeneous broadening effect in the second order correlations. The viability of such approaches lies in that (1) in weak measurement the state collapse which would disturb the system dynamics occurs at a very low probability, and (2) a shot of measurement projecting the quantum object to a known basis state serves as a starter or stopper of the evolution without pumping or coherently controlling the system as otherwise required in conventional spin echo., Comment: 5 pages 3 figures

Non-perturbative phenomena in four-wave mixing spectra of semiconductors are studied using the exact solution of a widely used phenomenological non-linear equation of motion of the exciton polarization. It is shown that Coulomb interaction, included in the nonlinearity, leads to two characteristic effects, which are essentially of dynamical origin, -- a split of the exciton peak and a non-monotonous dependence of the response at the exciton frequency on the magnitude of the external field. Relations between the spectral features and the parameters of the system is obtained. It is found that the transition from perturbative to non-perturbative regimes is controlled by parameters inversely proportional to the decay rate. It implies that the condition of low excitation density does not necessarily warrant applicability of the perturbational approach., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Coherent population trapping (CPT) refers to the steady-state trapping of population in a coherent superposition of two ground states which are coupled by coherent optical fields to an intermediate state in a three-level atomic system. Recently, CPT has been observed in an ensemble of donor bound spins in GaAs and in single nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond by using a fluorescence technique. We have studied ultrafast photoinduced demagnetization in GaMnAs via two-color time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy. Below-bandgap midinfrared pump pulses strongly excite the valence band, while near-infrared probe pulses reveal sub-picosecond demagnetization that is followed by an ultrafast ($\sim$1 ps) partial recovery of the Kerr signal. Through comparison with InMnAs, we attribute the signal recovery to an ultrafast energy relaxation of holes. We propose that the dynamical polarization of holes through $p$-$d$ scattering is the source of the observed probe signal. These results support the physical picture of femtosecond demagnetization proposed earlier for InMnAs, identifying the critical roles of both energy and spin relaxation of hot holes., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We investigate a singly-charged quantum dot under a strong optical driving field by probing the system with a weak optical field. When the driving field is detuned from the trion transition, the probe absorption spectrum is shifted from the trion resonance as a consequence of the dynamic Stark effect. Simultaneously, a gain sideband is created, resulting from the coherent energy transfer between the optical fields through the quantum dot nonlinearity. As the pump detuning is moved from red to blue, we map out the anticrossing of these two spectral lines. The optical Bloch equations for a stationary two-level atom can be used to describe the numerous spectral features seen in this nano solid state system.

We present an adiabatic approach to the design of entangling quantum operations with two electron spins localized in separate InAs/GaAs quantum dots via the Coulomb interaction between optically-excited localized states. Slowly-varying optical pulses minimize the pulse noise and the relaxation of the excited states. An analytic "dressed state" solution gives a clear physical picture of the entangling process, and a numerical solution is used to investigate the error dynamics. For two vertically-stacked quantum dots we show that, for a broad range of dot parameters, a two-spin state with concurrence $C>0.85$ can be obtained by four optical pulses with durations $\sim 0.1 - 1$ ns., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We treat the spin injection and extraction via a ferromagnetic metal/semiconductor Schottky barrier as a quantum scattering problem. This enables the theory to explain a number of phenomena involving spin-dependent current through the Schottky barrier, especially the counter-intuitive spin polarization direction in the semiconductor due to current extraction seen in recent experiments. A possible explanation of this phenomenon involves taking into account the spin-dependent inelastic scattering via the bound states in the interface region. The quantum-mechanical treatment of spin transport through the interface is coupled with the semiclassical description of transport in the adjoining media, in which we take into account the in-plane spin diffusion along the interface in the planar geometry used in experiments. The theory forms the basis of the calculation of spin-dependent current flow in multi-terminal systems, consisting of a semiconductor channel with many ferromagnetic contacts attached, in which the spin accumulation created by spin injection/extraction can be efficiently sensed by electrical means. A three-terminal system can be used as a magnetic memory cell with the bit of information encoded in the magnetization of one of the contacts. Using five terminals we construct a reprogrammable logic gate, in which the logic inputs and the functionality are encoded in magnetizations of the four terminals, while the current out of the fifth one gives a result of the operation., Comment: A review to appear in Mod. High-resolution spectral hole burning (SHB) in coherent nondegenerate differential transmission spectroscopy discloses spin-trion dynamics in an ensemble of negatively charged quantum dots. In the Voigt geometry, stimulated Raman spin coherence gives rise to Stokes and anti-Stokes sidebands on top of the trion spectral hole. The prominent feature of an extremely narrow spike at zero detuning arises from spin population pulsation dynamics. These SHB features confirm coherent electron spin dynamics in charged dots, and the linewidths reveal spin spectral diffusion processes., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Emission from single CdSe nanocrystals in PMMA was investigated. A fraction of the nanocrystals exhibiting switching between two energy states, which have similar total intensities, but distinctly different spectra were observed. We found that the spectral shift characteristic frequency increases with the pump power. By using the dynamic shift in the spectral position of emission peaks, we were able to correlate peaks from the same nanocrystal. The measured correlation is consistent with assignment of low energy lines to phonon replicas., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Control of electron spin decoherence in contact with a mesoscopic bath of many interacting nuclear spins in an InAs quantum dot is studied by solving the coupled quantum dynamics. The nuclear spin bath, because of its bifurcated evolution predicated on the electron spin up or down state, measures the which-state information of the electron spin and hence diminishes its coherence. The many-body dynamics of nuclear spin bath is solved with a pair-correlation approximation. In the relevant timescale, nuclear pair-wise flip-flops, as elementary excitations in the mesoscopic bath, can be mapped into the precession of non-interacting pseudo-spins. Such mapping provides a geometrical picture for understanding the decoherence and for devising control schemes. A close examination of nuclear bath dynamics reveals a wealth of phenomena and new possibilities of controlling the electron spin decoherence. For example, when the electron spin is flipped by a $\pi$-pulse at $\tau$, its coherence will partially recover at $\sqrt{2}\tau$ as a consequence of quantum disentanglement from the mesoscopic bath. In contrast to the re-focusing of inhomogeneously broadened phases by conventional spin-echoes, the disentanglement is realized through shepherding quantum evolution of the bath state via control of the quantum object. A concatenated construction of pulse sequences can eliminate the decoherence with arbitrary accuracy, with the nuclear-nuclear spin interaction strength acting as the controlling small parameter.

We propose and analyze a theoretical model of ultrafast light-induced magnetization dynamics in systems of localized spins that are coupled to carriers' spins by sp-d exchange interaction. A prominent example of a class of materials falling into this category are ferromagnetic (III,Mn)V semiconductors, in which ultrafast demagnetization has been recently observed. In the proposed model light excitation heats up the population of carriers, taking it out of equilibrium with the localized spins. This triggers the process of energy and angular momentum exchange between the two spin systems, which lasts for the duration of the energy relaxation of the carriers. We derive the Master equation for the density matrix of a localized spin interacting with the hot carriers and couple it with a phenomenological treatment of the carrier dynamics. We develop a general theory within the sp-d model and we apply it to the ferromagnetic semiconductors, taking into account the valence band structure of these materials. We show that the fast spin relaxation of the carriers can sustain the flow of polarization between the localized and itinerant spins leading to significant demagnetization of the localized spin system, observed in (III,Mn)V materials., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

A particular difficulty in studying many-body interactions in a solid is the absence of an experimental technique that can directly probe their key characteristics. We show that 2D Fourier spectroscopy provides an efficient tool for the measurement of critical parameters describing the effect of many-body interactions on the optical response of semiconductors. We develop the basic microscopic theory of 2D Fourier spectroscopy of semiconductors in the framework of the three-band model (heavy holes, light holes, and electrons). The theory includes many-body correlations nonperturbatively and can be generalized straightforwardly in order to describe 2D Fourier spectra obtained in atomic physics. We establish a relation between the 2D Fourier spectrum and the many-body correlations. It is shown, in particular, that 2D Fourier spectroscopy provides a principal possibility to establish experimentally the origin of the fast decay of the memory term describing the Coulomb interaction between heavy- and light-hole excitons. We study in theory the generation and detection of electron spin coherence in nonlinear optical spectroscopy of semiconductor quantum dots doped with single electrons. We develop a theoretical model for transverse dynamics of a single electron spin interacting with a nuclear spin bath. The approach allows a simple diagrammatic representation and analytical expressions of different nuclear spin excitation processes contributing to electron spin decoherence and dynamical phase fluctuations. It accounts for nuclear spin dynamics beyond conventional pair correlation models. We describe an interaction mechanism between electron spins in a vertically-stacked double quantum dot that can be used for controlled two-qubit operations. This interaction is mediated by excitons confined within, and delocalized over, the double dot. Extraction of electrons from a semiconductor to a ferromagnet as well as the case of injection in the reverse direction may be formulated as a scattering theory. However, the presence of bound states at the interface arising out of doping on the semiconductor side must be taken into account in the scattering theory. Inclusion of the interface states yields an explanation of a recent result of spin imaging measurement which contradicts the current understanding of spin extraction. We present a theory of the optical control of the spin of an electron in an InAs quantum dot. We show how two Raman-detuned laser pulses can be used to obtain arbitrary single-qubit rotations via the excitation of an intermediate trion state. Our theory takes into account a finite in-plane hole $g$-factor and hole-mixing. We consider the initialization of the spin-state of a single electron trapped in a self-assembled quantum dot via optical pumping of a trion level. We show that with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the growth direction of the dot, a near-unity fidelity can be obtained in a time equal to a few times the inverse of the spin-conserving trion relaxation rate. This method is several orders-of-magnitude faster than with the field aligned parallel, since this configuration must rely on a slow hole spin-flip mechanism. This increase in speed does result in a limit on the maximum obtainable fidelity, but we show that for InAs dots, the error is very small., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

For a two-state quantum object interacting with a slow mesoscopic interacting spin bath, we show that a many-body solution of the bath dynamics conditioned on the quantum-object state leads to an efficient control scheme to recover the lost quantum-object coherence through disentanglement. We demonstrate the theory with the realistic problem of one electron spin in a bath of many interacting nuclear spins in a semiconductor quantum dot. We apply an analysis of time-dependent spin-polarized current in a semiconductor channel at room temperature to establish how the magnetization configuration and dynamics of three ferromagnetic terminals, two of them biased and third connected to a capacitor, affect the currents and voltages. In a steady state, the voltage on the capacitor is related to spin accumulation in the channel. When the magnetization of one of the terminals is rotated, a transient current is triggered. This effect can be used for electrical detection of magnetization reversal dynamics of an electrode or for dynamical readout of the alignment of two magnetic contacts., Comment: Revised version, 8 pages, 3 figures

The helicity of a circularly polarized light beam may be determined by the spin direction of photo-excited electrons in a III-V semiconductor. Density functional theory (DFT) is shown to provide a novel conceptual and computational framework for entanglement in interacting many-body quantum systems. DFT can, in particular, shed light on the intriguing relationship between quantum phase transitions and entanglement. We use DFT concepts to express entanglement measures in terms of the first or second derivative of the ground state energy. We illustrate the versatility of the DFT approach via a variety of analytically solvable models. As a further application we discuss entanglement and quantum phase transitions in the case of mean field approximations for realistic models of many-body systems., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

A one dimensional theory of lateral spin-polarized transport is derived from the two dimensional flow in the vertical cross section of a stack of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic layers. This takes into account the influence of the lead on the lateral current underneath, in contrast to the conventional 1D modeling by the collinear configuration of lead/channel/lead. Our theory is convenient and appropriate for the current in plane configuration of an all-metallic spintronics structure as well as for the planar structure of a semiconductor with ferromagnetic contacts. For both systems we predict the optimal contact width for maximal magnetoresistance and propose an electrical measurement of the spin diffusion length for a wide range of materials., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We present a quantum solution to the electron spin decoherence by a nuclear pair-correlation method for the electron-nuclear spin dynamics under a strong magnetic field and a temperature high for the nuclear spins but low for the electron. The theory incorporates the hyperfine interaction, the intrinsic (both direct and indirect) nuclear interactions, and the extrinsic nuclear coupling mediated by the hyperfine interaction with the single electron in question. The last is shown to be important in free-induction decay (FID) of the single electron spin coherence. The spin echo eliminates the hyperfine-mediated decoherence but only reduces the decoherence by the intrinsic nuclear interactions. Thus, the decoherence times for single spin FID and ensemble spin echo are significantly different. The decoherence is explained in terms of quantum entanglement, which involves more than the spectral diffusion., Comment: Expanded version. We present the calculations for the oscillator strength of the recombination of excitons bound to phosphorous donors in silicon. We show that the direct recombination of the bound exciton cannot account for the experimentally measured oscillator strength of the no-phonon line. Instead, the recombination process is assisted by an umklapp process of the donor electron state. We make use of the empirical pseudopotential method to evaluate the Umklapp-assisted recombination matrix element in second-order perturbation theory. Our result is in excellent agreement with the experiment. We solve the two-band model for the transport across a junction between a semimetal and an excitonic insulator. We analyze the current in terms of two competing terms associated with neutral excitons and charged carriers, respectively. Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy of ferromagnetic InMnAs reveals two distinct {\em demagnetization} processes -- fast ($<1$ ps) and slow ($\sim$100 ps). Both components diminish with increasing temperature and are absent above the Curie temperature. The fast component rapidly grows with pump power and saturates at high fluences ($>10$ mJ/cm$^2$); the saturation value indicates a {\em complete quenching} of ferromagnetism on a sub-picosecond time scale. We attribute this fast dynamics to spin heating through $p$-$d$ exchange interaction between photo-carriers and Mn ions while the $\sim$100 ps component is interpreted as spin-lattice relaxation., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
