Abstract Background The National Benchmark Test (NBT) that determines academic readiness is widely used by Faculties as an additional measure to select students for the study of medicine. Despite this, many students continue to experience academic challenges that culminate in delayed graduation and sometimes academic exclusion or discontinuation of studies. Aim This study aimed to understand academic and non-academic variables linked with academic difficulties in the first three years of medical education. Methods The study sample consisted of six cohorts of medical students for the period 2011 to 2016 (n = 1392). Only the first three of the six-year medical programme were selected for analysis. Survival analysis and Cox Proportional Hazard (CPH) was used to identify academic and non-academic variables associated with academic difficulties. Results A total of 475 students (34%) experienced academic difficulty; 221 (16%) in the first year of study, 192 (14%) in the second year and 62 (5%) in the third year of study. The results show that Intermediate Upper, Lower and Basic levels for all NBT domains, living in university residence, rurality and male gender were risk factors for academic difficulty. Conclusion In mitigating these factors, the NBT must inform the type of support programmes to augment the students' skills and promote academic success. Additionally, existing support programmes should be evaluated to ascertain if they reach students at risk and whether participating in these programmes yield positive academic outcomes.

Detarium microcarpum Guill & Perr. and Detarium senegalense J.F.Gmel. are two species of wild trees that contribute significantly to the livelihoods of local communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Exploration of the ecological patterns of their population structure is, therefore, necessary to ensure long-term management. The aims of this study were to: (i) determine the floristic composition of the habitats of D. microcarpum and D. senegalense, (ii) assess the population structure of both species, and (iii) assess the influence of biotic and abiotic drivers on the structural parameters of these species. A total of 177 plots were installed in eight sites in Benin. The data collected included the dbh1.30 m, the crown diameter, the total height, and the type of regeneration (generative, sprout, and sucker). The topographical and soil parameters of the plots were also recorded. A generalized linear model (binomial negative regression) and ANOVA were used for the analysis of density and morphological features data, respectively. The floristic composition of D. microcarpum habitats was found to be relatively distinct (p = 0.001) from one zone to another. A significant difference (p = 0.001) in heterospecific individuals was also observed between the habitats of both species. The density of individuals of D. microcarpum decreased significantly from the Sudanian zone (4594 ± 207 stems/ha) to the Guinean zone (93.60 ± 11.90 stems/ha; p < 0.001). In the Sudano-Guinean zone where both species were found, the density of D. senegalense was very low (19.07 ± 7.64 stems/ha). The density of adult individuals of D. microcarpum was significantly high on gravelly soils. The regeneration of the species was negatively correlated with the slope, soil texture and basal area of heterospecific individuals. In D. senegalense, its regeneration was negatively correlated with elevation and positively with the density of its adult individuals. The height of both species of Detarium was positively associated with altitude. This study showed the effect of biotic and abiotic factors determining the population dynamics of Detarium spp. species and could be considered in the sustainable management of these species.

Background: Numerous factors may influence academic performance and success in undergraduate physiotherapy programmes. Understanding these factors could assist with student selection and design of support structures. Objectives: The objective of our study was to explore the amount of variance explained by the National Benchmark Test (NBT) and the National Senior Certificate (NSC) in passing the first year of study and to explore the association between the NBT performance bands and first-year progression outcome. Method: The sample comprised 2013–2017 student cohorts. Hierarchical regression models were used to explore significant predictors for academic success in the first year of study. The chi-square test was used to assess the association between the NBT performance bands and the categorised progression outcome. Results: The NBT domains explained 22% of the variance, R2 = 0.229, F (3, 212) = 20.97, p = 0.000. The four NSC subjects accounted for 20% of the variance. All seven predicting variables contributed to 43% of the variance in the first year of study, R2 = 0.435, F (7, 208) = 27.29, p = 0.000. Associations between NBT domains and GPA: quantitative literacy (Φ = 0.27; p 0.000); academic literacy (Φ = 0.22; p 0.000); mathematics (Φ = 0.18; p = 0.014). Conclusion: Academic success is associated with academic factors as measured by the NBT and physical sciences matriculation results. Clinical implications: Support programmes in the first year of study are needed to improve student performance and success such as additional tutorials and language enrichment programmes.

The lower pressure of water vapor of the outer eastern and south-eastern Carpathians, as well as in Dobrogea, determines within these areas an average annual number of days of under 2 days. In sheltered areas from Bârlad Plateau the average multi-annual value decreases even below 0,5 days. Hail events that affect the territory of Moldova are, in most cases, caused by thunderstorms during May and June (frequency of over 60 %). We had analysed in the present paper a representative number of statistical severe convective events causing hailstorms and material damage between 1990-2013 period. Values of atmospheric instability indices have been analyzed for these episodes as CAPE (Convective available potential energy), SWEAT (severe weather threat), Li (lifted index), KI (K index), TT (total totals) to evaluate their medium range forecast under the hail production conditions. These indicators measure the degree of atmospheric instability providing information about possible occurrence of clouds with large vertical extent. The most powerful correlations have been recorded in the case of parameter LI, for which the daily mean value was used. The status of these indices is assessed for both the days with hail, but also on previous intervals with hail to assess their capacity to forecast this extreme weather phenomenon.

Windfalls are caused by the interaction of several factors and occur in a meteorological context characterized mainly by high wind speeds. In the present study we tried to develop a method for predicting windfalls in a test region, determining areas of high susceptibility of this climatic risk. For this purpose we evaluated parameters regarding the morphometric (slope, exposition, altitude) and morphological (mountain side concavity/convexity, slope break) properties of the relief, the types of forest and the soil on which these grow. We gave susceptibility scores for each parameter considered, resulting in a series of classified layers. These were subsequently added up to form the final cartographic material which highlights the vulnerable areas. For validating the results we utilised LandSat images from different time periods. The existence of a major windfalls event in the studied region (March 2002) allowed us to compare the situation before and after the event, and to check if there is a correlation with the model developed in this analysis. On the basis of this study it may be possible to predict the future evolution of trees susceptibility to windfall which could be helpful in establishing silvic measures to be implemented in order to minimize the damage caused by these phenomena.

Defining the Mediterranean cyclones as “semi-permanent centers” active only in the cold half of the year would suggest that they are not active in summer, and their influence on the weather of southern Europe and Romania is insignificant during this season. The statistical-climatological study presented in this paper shows that the daily frequency of occurrence of the Mediterranean cyclones during the month of June in the period 1981-2010, which influenced the weather in Oltenia, is 8%. Thus, they can be active all year round and can cause episodes of severe weather, depending on the position of other baric centers (the Azores High, The Icelandic Depression). Climatological aspects were investigated using meteorological data for June in the period 1981-2010, available from the quality check database of National Meteorological Administration, Bucharest. For describing the general context, climatological data was used to provide a global overview. Reanalysis data of sea-level pressure and geopotential height at 500 hPa, available from NOOA-NCEP/NCAR, were also used.

Background Poor medication adherence (MA) is prevalent globally. MA assessment, often based on scales or pill count, lacks actionability. A mobile application (app), MediEasy, targeting patients on multiple daily medications, has been developed to engage their caregivers to enhance their MA. Objectives This pilot single-arm study aimed to determine the feasibility, acceptability, utility and glycaemic control of the MediEasy-app by patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus and their caregivers. Methods 20 Multi-ethnic Asian patients aged 51 to 70 years with suboptimal glycaemic control (HbA1c>7.5%) and their caregivers were recruited at a Primary care outpatient clinic in Singapore. The Medieasy app that contains the following major functionalities such as the alerts to take medications, embedded medication details, personalized dosing options (such as frequency and scheduling dosage settings) is twinned to their designated caregivers. The Caregivers can remind the patients who missed the scheduled medication intake when the paired device was alerted. Results 85% (17/20) of the participants used the app for the entire 4 weeks, reflecting feasibility; 3 dropped out due to technical glitches or failure to adhere to protocol. The app was activated with an average of 2.8 times per day showing adequate utility. The 17 participants and their caregivers agreed that the app supported medication adherence. Their mean HbA1c decreased by 0.2% after 12 weeks of app usage. Conclusions The results showed feasibility, utility and acceptability of the MediEasy-app, with improved glycaemic control after its usage.

Abstract The matrix protein osteopontin has been shown to be a marker of osteoclastic activity in multiple myeloma patients, as well as a regulator of angiogenesis. We measured serum levels of osteopontin in 50 untreated multiple myeloma patients (in 25, also after treatment) and examined the relation to markers of osteolytic and angiogenic activity. The median (range) of serum osteopontin was 85 (5-232) in the patient group vs. 36 (2-190) ng/ml in the control group. Serum osteopontin levels were significantly higher in patients with advanced stage or grade of myeloma disease. All patients with serum osteopontin levels >100 ng/ml had advanced stage (II or III) or high grade bone disease, whereas stage I or low grade patients had serum osteopontin levels

Abstract Background Ultrasonography of temporal arteries is not commonly used in the approach of patients with suspected giant cell arteritis (GCA) in clinical practice. A meta-analysis of primary studies available through April 2004 concluded that ultrasonography could indeed be helpful in diagnosing GCA. We specifically re-examined the diagnostic value of the ultrasonography-derived halo sign, a dark hypoechoic circumferential thickening around the artery lumen, indicating vasculitic wall edema, in GCA. Methods Original, prospective studies in patients with suspected GCA that examined ultrasonography findings of temporal arteries using the ACR 1990 classification criteria for GCA as reference standard, published through 2009, were identified. Only eight studies involving 575 patients, 204 of whom received the final diagnosis of GCA, fulfilled technical quality criteria for ultrasound. Weighted sensitivity and specificity estimates of the halo sign were assessed, their possible heterogeneity was investigated and pooled diagnostic odds ratio was determined. Results Unilateral halo sign achieved an overall sensitivity of 68% (95% CI, 0.61-0.74) and specificity of 91% (95% CI, 0.88-0.94) for GCA. The values of inconsistency coefficient (I2) of both sensitivity and specificity of the halo sign, showed significant heterogeneity concerning the results between studies. Pooled diagnostic odds ratio, expressing how much greater the odds of having GCA are for patients with halo sign than for those without, was 34 (95% CI, 8.21-138.23). Diagnostic odds ratio was further increased to 65 (95% CI, 17.86-236.82) when bilateral halo signs were present (sensitivity/specificity of 43% and 100%, respectively). In both cases, it was found that DOR was constant across studies. Conclusion Temporal artery edema demonstrated as halo sign should be always looked for in ultrasonography when GCA is suspected. Providing that currently accepted technical quality criteria are fulfilled, halo sign's sensitivity and specificity are comparable to those of autoantibodies used as diagnostic tests in rheumatology. Validation of revised GCA classification criteria which will include the halo sign may be warranted.

Abstract Background Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are ubiquitous, highly conserved proteins across all the species and play essential roles in maintaining protein stability within the cells under normal conditions, while preventing stress-induced cellular damage. HSPs were also overexpressed in various types of cancer, being associated with tumor cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical significance of HSP -27, -60, and -90 expression in gastric carcinoma. Methods HSP -27, -60, and -90 proteins expression was assessed immunohistochemically in tumoral samples of 66 gastric adenocarcinoma patients and was statistically analyzed in relation to various clinicopathological characteristics, tumor proliferative capacity and patients' survival. Results HSP-27, -60, -90 proteins were abundantly expressed in gastric adenocarcinoma cases examined. HSP-27 expression was significantly associated with tumor size (pT, P = 0.026), the presence of organ metastases (pM, P = 0.046) and pStage (P = 0.041), while HSP-27 staining intensity with nodal status (pN, P = 0.042). HSP-60 expression was significantly associated with patients' sex (P = 0.011), while HSP-60 staining intensity with patients' age (P = 0.027) and tumor histopathological grade (P = 0.031). HSP-90 expression was not associated with any of the clinicopathological parameters examined; however, HSP-90 staining intensity was significantly associated with tumor size (pT, P = 0.020). High HSP-90 expression was significantly associated with longer overall survival times in univariate analysis (log-rank test, P = 0.033), being also identified as an independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis (P = 0.026). Conclusion HSP-27, -60, and -90 were associated with certain clinicopathological parameters which are crucial for the management of gastric adenocarcinoma patient. HSP-90 expression may also be an independent prognostic indicator in gastric adenocarcinoma patients.

Abstract The coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) is a crucial receptor for the entry of both coxsackie B viruses and adenoviruses into host cells. CAR expression on tumor cells was reported to be associated with their sensitivity to adenoviral infection, while it was considered as a surrogate marker for monitoring and/or predicting the outcome of adenovirus-mediated gene therapy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical significance of CAR expression in endometrial adenocarcinoma. CAR expression was assessed immunohistochemically in tumoral samples of 41 endometrial adenocarcinoma patients and was statistically analyzed in relation to various clinicopathological parameters, tumor proliferative capacity and patient survival. CAR positivity was noted in 23 out of 41 (56%) endometrial adenocarcinoma cases, while high CAR expression in 8 out of 23 (35%) positive ones. CAR intensity of immunostaining was classified as mild in 11 (48%), moderate in 10 (43%) and intense in 2 (9%) out of the 23 positive cases. CAR positivity was significantly associated with tumor histological grade (p = 0.036), as well differentiated tumors more frequently demonstrating no CAR expression. CAR staining intensity was significantly associated with tumor histological type (p = 0.016), as tumors possessing squamous elements presented more frequently intense CAR immunostaining. High CAR expression showed a trend to be correlated with increased tumor proliferative capacity (p = 0.057). Patients with tumors presenting moderate or intense CAR staining intensity were characterized by longer survival times than those with mild one; however, this difference did not reach statistical significance. These data reveal, for the first time, the expression of CAR in clinical material obtained from patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma in relation to important clinicopathological parameters for their management. As CAR appears to modulate the proliferation and characteristics of cancer cells, its expression could be considered of possible clinical importance for future (gene) therapy applications.

Loranthaceae are parasitic plants whose management remains a challenge. This study aimed to record Loranthaceae species and their local names, assess their use diversity and cultural importance, identify the socio-demographic groups with the highest levels of knowledge about Loranthaceae uses, and analyze the variation of Loranthaceae utilization between and within ethnic groups. Ethnobotanical data were collected in northern Benin from March 2015 to February 2017 through semi-structured interviews and show-and-tell method with 240 informants. We assessed Loranthaceae use diversity and cultural importance using the Relative Frequency of Citations (RFC), Number of Uses (NU), Use Value (UV), Number of Use Categories (NUC), and Cultural Importance Index (CI). Poisson's regression and Jaccard's Similarity Index were used to identify the socio-demographic groups with the highest levels of knowledge about Loranthaceae uses and evaluate the similarity of Loranthaceae uses between ethnic groups. Results showed 15 local names used to designate four Loranthaceae species namely Agelanthus dodoneifolius, Tapinanthus globiferus, Phragmanthera kamerunensis, and T. ophioides. Loranthaceae were involved in 113 uses gathered in six categories namely human medicine, magic, veterinary, fodder, food, and cosmetic. Human medicine was the most important category with 0.825 as RFC, 61.10 % of the uses, and 100 % of Loranthaceae species involved. A. dodoneifolius was the most important Loranthaceae species regarding its RFC, NU, UV, and NUC of 0.938, 95, 2.296, and 6 respectively. CI showed A. dodoneifolius and T. globiferus were mainly used in human medicine with 0.729 and 0.458 respectively. Bariba, traditional healers and breeders, old people, and animists presented the highest levels of knowledge about Loranthaceae uses. Loranthaceae utilization varied according to ethnic groups and Bariba and Yom presented a similarity in Loranthaceae uses. Loranthaceae valorization in the production of improved traditional medicines, animal feed, soap, and green fertilizers will contribute to the biological control of these plants.

This paper presents the results of a systematic review of literature, reported in research journals, on the experiences of higher educational institutions regarding teaching, learning, and assessment during the Covid-19 pandemic. Different studies related to the Covid-19 pandemic have been conducted within the South African context, but there has not been a systematic review of these studies highlighting the lessons learned, how these lessons have affected education in higher education institutions (HEIs), and how these lessons can inform future planning. This study aims to summarise literature on teaching, learning and assessment in higher education institutions and to conceptualise possible guidelines for future planning. An analysis of 52 research articles revealed 7 implications for the lessons learnt from the pandemic for future teaching, learning and assessment (TLA) in South African HEIs (realisation of the affordances of technology for TLA, institutional changes related to online TLA during the pandemic, students’ experiences related to TLA, lecturer’s experiences related to TLA, the need for care, assessment related matters, approaches to teaching, learning and assessment) and several recommendations for how these lessons can be leveraged to help HEIs to prepare effectively for future catastrophic disruptions to education in South African HEIs. The discussion shows the digital divide that exists within the South African population and other contextual challenges faced by higher education institutions during the pandemic, and the different sacrifices by both institutions and students to survive the pandemic. Overall, the findings of this review provide valuable guidance for HEIs and stakeholders involved in TLA, offering insights on how to integrate the lessons learned from the pandemic into their future planning and strategies.

Abstract Background Academic performance factors, such as school-leaving grades and other academic indicators for selection, play a significant role in student success. The study aimed to determine the best predictors of academic success in the first year of study for nursing studies at a South African university using three National Benchmark Test (NBT) domains and four National Senior Certificate (NSC) subjects. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of the admission data of first-time students (n = 317), enrolled on the Bachelor of Nursing between 2012 and 2018. Hierarchical regression was used to explore important variables predicting success in the first year of study. Cross tabulations were used to determine the association between progression outcome, proficiency levels of the NBT and school quintiles. Results All predicting variables explained 35% of the variance in the first year of the study. The NBT MAT (Mathematics), Academic literacy (AL), and NSC’s Life Sciences were statistically significant predictors for passing the first year. Analysis of progression outcomes by the NBT proficiency levels suggests that most students begin studies with lower entry-level skills than required, which hinders academic progress. No major differences in academic performance were observed for the students who attended different quintiles. Conclusion Selection test results predict areas where students are likely to encounter difficulties and inform the interventions needed to achieve academic success. There may be serious implications for students admitted with low entry-level skills in variables predicting academic success and they would need tailored academic interventions to improve their grasp of mathematical and biological concepts and their ability to read, think and reason.

Architecture requires many aspects to be considered – during research, concept development, detailing, construction and even postoccupancy. Not many architects nowadays see to all the aspects mentioned as it is easier and sometimes better to collaborate with architects specialised in each area. However, knowledge about each aspect (and most of all understanding the importance of each in the whole building process) is essential in order to corroborate information and thus assure the quality of the final product – the building in use. An important question arises in an architecture educational environment: which aspects must be considered as core elements to be taught? We wish to set didactic objectives of architectural technology and follow specific pedagogical methods that underline its specific role in an academic environment, but also its role of reaffirming, refining and enriching the design. Beyond its obvious constructive role, architectural technology can be regarded as a tool along the various phases of design, including post-occupancy. Its approach as such throughout the years of study has an undeniable effect upon its understanding and further application in practice. Also, how architectural technology is taught and guided can contribute to the achievement of general competences and abilities linked to the general didactic objectives of a school of architecture.

The OSG-operated Open Science Pool is an HTCondor-based virtual cluster that aggregates resources from compute clusters provided by several organizations. Most of the resources are not owned by OSG, so demand-based dynamic provisioning is important for maximizing usage without incurring excessive waste. OSG has long relied on GlideinWMS for most of its resource provisioning needs but is limited to resources that provide a Grid-compliant Compute Entrypoint. To work around this limitation, the OSG Software Team has developed a glidein container that resource providers could use to directly contribute to the OSPool. The problem with that approach is that it is not demand-driven, relegating it to backfill scenarios only. To address this limitation, a demand-driven direct provisioner of Kubernetes resources has been developed and successfully used on the NRP. The setup still relies on the OSG-maintained backfill container image but automates the provisioning matchmaking and successive requests. That provisioner has also been extended to support Lancium, a green computing cloud provider with a Kubernetes-like proprietary interface. The provisioner logic has been intentionally kept very simple, making this extension a low-cost project. Both NRP and Lancium resources have been provisioned exclusively using this mechanism for many months.

The IceCube experiment has substantial simulation needs and is in continuous search for the most cost-effective ways to satisfy them. The most CPU-intensive part relies on CORSIKA, a cosmic ray air shower simulation. Historically, IceCube relied exclusively on x86-based CPUs, like Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC, but recently server-class ARM-based CPUs are also becoming available, both on-prem and in the cloud. In this paper we present our experience in running a sample CORSIKA simulation on both ARM and x86 CPUs available through Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). We used the production binaries for the x86 instances, but had to build the binaries for ARM instances from source code, which turned out to be mostly painless. Our benchmarks show that ARM-based CPUs in GKE were not only the most cost-effective but were also the fastest in absolute terms in all the tested configurations. While the advantage is not drastic, about 20% in cost-effectiveness and less than 10% in absolute terms, it is still large enough to warrant an investment in ARM support for IceCube.

The x86_64 instruction set architecture is not a single, consistent, compatible interface to execute computer programs. Since the initial release in 1999, every new generation has added new instructions, some of which were later removed. Most of these new instructions are intended to improve the performance of those programs which explicitly take advantage of them. However, running such a program on older CPUs without appropriate support, results in Linux SIGILL exception signal, which is difficult for end users to diagnose. On the other hand, compiling scientific code for the least common denominator ISA can leave significant performance on the table. High Throughput systems, containing very large number of machines, cannot require a single CPU version across hundreds of thousands of machines operating in dozens of sites. The OSG Open Science Pool alone consists of more than 20 different, subtly incompatible X86_64 implementations. In 2020, Intel, AMD and RedHat proposed new terminology and partitioned these dozens of microarchitectures into a strict hierarchy of four groups. The HTCondor Software Suite and the OSG now have first class support for these microarchitectures. This paper discusses the advantages for users and future work around microarchitecture support.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic kilometer neutrino telescope located at the geographic South Pole. Understanding detector systematic effects is a continuous process. This requires the Monte Carlo simulation to be updated periodically to quantify potential changes and improvements in science results with more detailed modeling of the systematic effects. IceCube’s largest systematic effect comes from the optical properties of the ice the detector is embedded in. Over the last few years there have been considerable improvements in the understanding of the ice, which require a significant processing campaign to update the simulation. IceCube normally stores the results in a central storage system at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, but it ran out of disk space in 2022. The Prototype National Research Platform (PNRP) project thus offered to provide both GPU compute and storage capacity to IceCube in support of this activity. The storage access was provided via XRootD-based OSDF Origins, a first for IceCube computing. We report on the overall experience using PNRP resources, with both successes and pain points.

Creating new materials, discovering new drugs, and simulating systems are essential processes for research and innovation and require substantial computational power. While many applications can be split into many smaller independent tasks, some cannot and may take hours or weeks to run to completion. To better manage those longer-running jobs, it would be desirable to stop them at any arbitrary point in time and later continue their computation on another compute resource; this is usually referred to as checkpointing. While some applications can manage checkpointing programmatically, it would be preferable if the batch scheduling system could do that independently. This paper evaluates the feasibility of using CRIU (Checkpoint Restore in Userspace), an open-source tool for the GNU/Linux environments, emphasizing the OSG’s OSPool HTCondor setup. CRIU allows checkpointing the process state into a disk image and can deal with both open files and established network connections seamlessly. Furthermore, it can checkpoint traditional Linux processes and containerized workloads. The functionality seems adequate for many scenarios supported in the OSPool. However, some limitations prevent it from being usable in all circumstances.

This article is an advanced theoretical study as a result of a chapter from the first author’s PhD study. The aim of the article is to discuss the relationship between commognition and the Van Hiele theory for studying discourse during Euclidean geometry problem-solving. Commognition is a theoretical framework that can be used in mathematics education to explain mathematical thinking through one’s discourse during problem-solving. Commognition uses four elements that characterise mathematical discourse and the difference between ritualistic and explorative discourses to explain how one displays mastery of mathematical problem-solving. On the other hand, the Van Hiele theory characterises five levels of geometrical thinking during one’s geometry learning and development. These five levels are fixed and mastery of one level leads to the next, and there is no success in the next level without mastering the previous level. However, for the purpose of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) we only focused on the first four Van Hiele levels. Findings from this theoretical review revealed that progress in the Van Hiele levels of geometrical thinking depends mainly on the discourse participation of the preservice teachers when solving geometry problems. In particular, an explorative discourse is required for the development in these four levels of geometrical thinking as compared to a ritualistic discourse participation.

The latter is in the center of the pathogenic mechanism underlying autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARD). It follows then, that optimal control of inflammation in ARDs may lead to a decrease of the accompanied CVD risk. Major trials (eg, CANTOS, CIRT), aimed at examining the possible benefits of immunomodulatory treatments in CVD, demonstrated conflicting results. On the other hand, substantial evidence is accumulating about the possible beneficial effects of biologic disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) in patients with ARDs, particularly those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It seems that bDMARDs (some more than others) alter the lipid profile in RA patients but do not adversely affect, in most cases, the TC/HDL ratio. Favorable effects are noted for arterial stiffness and endothelial function. This is reflected in the lower risk for CVD events, seen in observational studies of RA patients treated with bDMARDs. It should be stressed that more data exist for the TNF-inhibitors than for other bDMARDs, such as tocilizumab, abatacept and rituximab. As regards the spondyloarthropathies (SpA), data are less robust. For TNF-inhibitors, effects appear to be on par with those seen in RA but no conclusions can be drawn for newer biologic drugs used in SpA (eg, IL-17 blockers). Finally, there is accumulating evidence for a beneficial effect of immunosuppressive treatment in cardiac inflammation and function in several ARDs. Introduction of newer therapeutic options in clinical practice seem to have a positive impact on CVD in the setting of ARD. This is probably due to better control of inflammation, but direct improvement in vascular pathology is also a valid hypothesis. Most data are derived from observational studies and, therefore, randomized controlled trials are needed to assess the possible favorable effect of bDMARDs on CVD outcomes.Keywords: atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, biologic agents, interleukins, inflammatory disorders

In the recent years, microgrid has been receiving increasing attention as one typical structure in smart grid frameworks. Fuel cells (FC) among other most relevant renewable energy sources have been studied as viable energy alternatives, in terms of them being cleaner and more efficient. Since the academic community and industry started giving attention to FCs, there have been many uplifting achievements in making FC technology more relevant as an energy source and as a result, FCs are increasingly penetrating different fields. The application of FCs into microgrids among other applications has proved advantageous on the performance improvement of microgrids while also inspiring hydrogen energy usage. While this combination of the two technologies carries advantages, there are many challenges that are faced in the process lying on multiple domains. The optimization and control of this combination, and the two technologies individually has been studied greatly in recent years. This paper presents the review of the control of FC based microgrids, where FCs in microgrid environment are looked at after recalling the knowledge background of FCs, the active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) as a possible controller for some strategies, and the hybrid system and control mechanisms.

The paper presents the main features of the urban heat island of Galați city during the summer season for a period of 16 years (2003-2018) using MODIS products. The main objectives were to analyse the extension and geometry of the urban heat island (UHI), its intensity, as well as its connection with land cover. The study is based on LST (Land Surface Temperature), a product obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors located on board of the Terra (EOS AM-1) satellite since 2001 and Aqua (EOS PM-1) satellite since 2003. The boundaries, geometry and spatial extent of the UHI were delimited primarily through the Rodionov test. Through this method, the changing points along four transects over Galați city were identified (North-South, East-West, Northeast-Southwest and Northwest-Southeast) and have been used to delimitate the UHI. Overall, the Galați UHI assessed by satellite information is stronger during the day when the UHI is split in two centres, developed over the industrial area in the west and over the residential part of the town in the east, while during the night the UHI is weaker being developed more clearly over the oldest part of the city. One of the major characteristics of the Galați UHI is that it is highly influenced by the water bodies encircling the city. During the day the intensity of UHI reaches 2-2.5°C while during the night decreases below 2.0°C. The relation of the UHI with land cover and the attenuation of UHI in the surrounding area are also investigated.

Abstract Background South African medical schools use the results of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination for selecting students. Five of the nine medical schools also use the National Benchmark Test (NBT). The University of the Witwatersrand weights the NSC and NBT results equally in the selection process. This study addresses the predictive validity of the NBT and NSC for academic success. The association between the NBT proficiency levels and students’ progression outcomes was also investigated. Methods Data obtained from the University’s Business Intelligence Services for 1652 first-year medical students from 2011 to 2017 were analysed using hierarchical regression models and chi-square tests. The three NBT domains and four of the NSC subjects were the independent variables in the regression models, with the first-year grade point average for students who passed the first year as the dependant variable. The NBT performance levels and first-year progression outcome (passed, failed, or cancelled) were used in the chi-square analysis. Frequency tables were used to describe the cohort’s demographic details and NBT results. Crosstabs were used to analyse student performance according to the school quintile system. The paper presents the temporal variability of surface ozone (O3) and its precursors (oxides of nitrogen - NOx) from January 2012 to December 2015. In the same time, this study is aimed to explore the influence of the weather elements on these two major atmospheric pollutants in the area of Iași city. The maximum record of nitrogen oxides reached during the 4 analyzed years was 1200 μ/m-3 on October 27, 2015, a period of the year when atmospheric stability prevails. During the warm season (considered from May to September) the highest concentration of ozone was recorded at 155 μ/m-3. The winds direction from SSE or NNW and the winds speed greater than 2 m/s can significantly increase the concentration of the O3 and NOx respectively. Also, the stable atmospheric conditions can increase especially the concentration of the nitrogen dioxides. The statistical results illustrate a strong Pearson's correlation of surface ozone with solar radiation/maximum air temperature (r >0.5). The correlations were strongest during the summer months. Using the composite method, between warm season and cold season a difference of the pollutants concentration greater than 30 units for NOx was observed. Synoptic conditions associated with high pollution are also described.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of the weather conditions and local climate on the temporal and spatial variability of particulate matters (PM 10) in Iași city which is facing major pollution problems in the recent years. Daily data from 4 monitoring stations of Environmental Protection Agency-Iași–for main weather parameters and particulate matters – and the temperature from an inner temperature and relative humidity observation network inside the city were used for a three year study (2013-2015). Linear correlation, composite analysis and multiple regression are the main statistical methods applied in the analysis. In brief, the most important meteorological parameters enhancing air pollution in Iași seem to be represented by thermal inversions developing in the region strongly related to local climate conditions. The Pearson correlation coefficient (stronger than -0.40) between PM10 and thermal gradient, the difference in the PM10 concentration exceeding 20 μg/m3 between strong thermal inversions and unstable conditions and the leading role of thermal gradients in multiple regression are the main indicators of the great role of thermal inversion in generating and sustaining pollution conditions in this area. The maximum concentrations of PM10 occur in May and March, gathering more than 30% of the days for the entire year. Complementary studies were taken into account in order to analyse the aerosol optical properties retrieved from Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET-NASA).

High throughput computing (HTC) has aided the scientific community in the analysis of vast amounts of data and computational jobs in distributed environments. To manage these large workloads, several systems have been developed to efficiently allocate and provide access to distributed resources. Many of these systems rely on job characteristics estimates (e.g., job runtime) to characterize the workload behavior, which in practice is hard to obtain. In this work, we perform an exploratory analysis of the CMS experiment workload using the statistical recursive partitioning method and conditional inference trees to identify patterns that charac- terize particular behaviors of the workload. We then propose an estimation process to predict job characteristics based on the collected data. Experimental results show that our process es- timates job runtime with 75% of accuracy on average, and produces nearly optimal predictions for disk and memory consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A high-precision hypernuclear experiment has been commissioned at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) to determine the hypertriton Λ binding energy via decay-pion spectroscopy. The method has been successfully pioneered with 4ΛH studies in the last decade. The experiment makes use of a novel high luminosity lithium target with a length of 45mm while being only 0.75mm thick to keep momentum smearing of the decay pions low. The target-to-beam alignment as well as the observation of the deposited heat is achieved with a newly developed thermal imaging system. Together with a precise beam energy determination via the undulator light interference method a recalibration of the magnetic spectrometers will be done to obtain a statistical and systematic error of about 20 keV. The experiment started in the summer of 2022 and initial optimization studies for luminosity and data quality are presented.

BackgroundComplete diagnosis and therapy of seasonal allergic rhinoconjunctivitis require evidence that exposure to the sensitizing pollen triggers allergic symptoms. Electronic clinical diaries, by recording disease severity scores and pollen exposure, can demonstrate this association. However, patients who spontaneously download an e-diary app show very low adherence to their recording. ObjectiveThe objective of our study was to assess adherence of patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis to symptom recording via e-diary explicitly prescribed by an allergist within a blended care approach. MethodsThe @IT-2020 project is investigating the diagnostic synergy of mobile health and molecular allergology in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis. In the pilot phase of the study, we recruited Italian children (Rome, Italy) and adults (Pordenone, Italy) with seasonal allergic rhinitis and instructed them to record their symptoms, medication intake, and general conditions daily through a mobile app (Allergy.Monitor) during the relevant pollen season. ResultsOverall, we recruited 101 Italian children (Rome) and 93 adults (Pordenone) with seasonal allergic rhinitis. Adherence to device use slowly declined during monitoring in 3 phases: phase A: first week, ≥1267/1358, 90%; phase B: second to sixth week, 4992/5884, 80% to 90%; and phase C: seventh week onward, 2063/2606, 70% to 80%. The goal of this paper is to present an implementation method for a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm using an electronic load and custom designed LabView software. The aim is to facilitate the testing of the algorithm in laboratory conditions, before it can be used in the real world, improving development time, facilitating cost reduction and offering confidence in the design. This paper analyses the most suitable MPPT algorithms for testing purposes and suggests a complete software and hardware implementation for hardware in the loop testing which can facilitate in-depth evaluation of different algorithms. In order to replicate realistic stimuli for the MPPT algorithm, a solar array simulator has been designed. Using the proposed method, the performance of various MPPT algorithms for different atmospheric conditions can be evaluated. The hardware and software setup have been tested and validated in laboratory conditions. The experimental results have validated the proposed evaluation method and the good dynamic response of the MPPT algorithm.

This study is based on 3 years of hourly observations of global solar radiation (2014-2016), at a new weather station installed in the region of Central Moldavian Plateau, at Mădârjac (47.05°N, 27.25°E, 270 m). The main characteristics of annual, monthly and daily regime of global radiation were emphasized using for comparison similar data from Iașioficial weather station. Smaller annual amount of global solar radiation than those observed in previous studies were observed, reaching 4734 MJ/m2 in Iași and 4454 MJ/m2 in Mădârjac. An altidudinal gradient of global solar radiation close to 140 MJ/m2 was identified for the hilly region of Moldova. Despite the overall higher values in Iași, 30% of days indicates higher values of this parameter at Mădârjac weather station. These results can be used for the evaluation of the photo-voltaic potential in the region, but also to understand the altitudinal differences of solar radiation in the hilly region in Moldavia, since the only long-range actinometric stations from this part of Romania, Iași and Galați, are located at low altitudes.

This type of behaviour leads to a huge increase ofunemployment, because people leave their courage under an invisible line and create a fakepersonality where they hide saying that they can’t do what society wants. In case that increasinginflation is obvious, unemployment is decreasing and people are trying to find something to do, towork, because inflation also leads to some actions which affect directly the unemployed ones.
