This study evaluated the effectiveness of using iron (Fe) powder and ferrous chloride (FeCl2) to decrease hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentration ([ H2S ]) from biogas production by anaerobic digestion (AD) of primary sludge, and to decrease phosphate (PO4-P) concentration ([ PO4-P ]) in the sludge. [ H2S ] and [ PO4-P ] removal increased as doses of Fe powder and FeCl2 increased to a certain point. Optimal supplementation was 5 g/L for Fe powder (H2S reduction=98% , PO4-P removal=95%) and 0.5 g/L for FeCl2 (H2S reduction=98% , PO4-P removal=97%). Appropriate dosage of Fe powder or FeCl2 can control [ H2S ] in biogas and decrease [ PO4-P ] in AD effluent, but excessive dosage can inhibit the digestion. The biogas production and methane content were higher with Fe powder compared with FeCl2 , but neither treatment had a significant effect on methane yield. The measured biogas production was accurately captured by the first-order kinetic model, as evidenced by a strong fit with high R2 values (0.957–0.980), and the deviations between the measured and predicted biogas production using the first-order kinetic model were <10%. Metals such as Zn and Cu present in sewage sludge applied to agricultural land can accumulate in soils and potentially mobilise into crops. Sequential extractions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy results are presented that show the speciation changes of Cu and Zn sorbed to anaerobic digestion sludge after mixing with soils over three consecutive 6-week cropping cycles, with and without spring barley (Hordeum vulgare). Cu and Zn in digested sewage sludge are primarily in metal sulphide phases formed during anaerobic digestion. When Cu and Zn spiked sludge was mixed with the soil, about 40% of Cu(I)-S phases and all Zn(II)-S phases in the amended sludge were converted to other phases (mainly Cu(I)-O and outer sphere Zn(II)-O phases). Further transformations occurred over time, and with crop growth. After 18 weeks of crop growth, about 60% of Cu added as Cu(I)-S phases was converted to other phases, with an increase in organo-Cu(II) phases. As a result, Cu and Zn extractability in the sludge-amended soil decreased with time and crop growth. Over 18 weeks, the proportions of Cu and Zn in the exchangeable fraction decreased from 36% and 70%, respectively, in freshly amended soil, to 28% and 59% without crop growth, and to 24% and 53% with crop growth. Overall, while sewage sludge application to land will probably increase the overall metal concentrations, metal bioavailability tends to reduce over time. Therefore, safety assessments for sludge application in agriculture should be based on both metal concentrations present and their specific binding strength within the amended soil. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contribute to the release of microplastics into the environment. While the removal efficiency of MPs in WWTPs can reach up to 99.9 %, the highest amount of microplastics is retained in the sludge. Anaerobic digestion, one of the most promising and common processes, can help reduce sludge volume and odour, and due to the formation of biogas, mainly consisting of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), can help decrease the operating costs of WWTPs. A test measuring the inhibition of biogas production using the OxiTop® measuring system was employed to determine the effect of added microfibres (MFs) on biogas production. Particles less than 1 mm in size of polyester, polyamide, and polyacrylic, were added to anaerobic sludge at concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 0.10 g l–1 to simulate their effect on biogas production. The yields of CH4 and CO2 produced during anaerobic digestion of the MFs-contaminated sludge were determined. The addition of MFs to sewage sludge affects methane production. The results indicated that the lowest added concentrations of 0.05 g l–1 of MFs promoted methane production, while the presence of 0.1 g l–1 decreased methane production for all types of MFs used. Polyacrylic at 0.1 g l–1 had the most negative effect on methane production (up to 27 %), while polyamide at 0.05 g l–1 reached the highest methane production (up to 25 %). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The accumulation of organic dyes and heavy metals (HMs) in sewage sludge (SS) after wastewater treatment is a significant problem due to the non-degradable nature of these pollutants. Moreover, the simultaneous removal of HMs and dyes in the complex process of SS treatment, such as anaerobic digestion (AD), has become attractive. HMs and dyes present in SS can have a detrimental effect on anaerobic digesters. These pollutants not only inhibit the production of methane, which is crucial for biogas generation, but also affect the stability of AD treatment, which can result in failure or inadequate performance of the AD process. This review highlights a novel method of removing HMs and dyes from the AD process of SS through the use of biochar modified with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CTS). The applications of conventional biochar have been limited due to poor adsorption capacity. However, modification using PVA/CTS composites enhances properties such as surface functional groups, adsorption capacity, porosity, surface area selectivity, and stability. Furthermore, this modified version can function as an additive in AD of SS treatment to boost biogas production, which is a viable source for heat generation or electricity supply. In addition, the digestates can be further processed through plasma pyrolysis for the removal of HMs and dyes bound to the modified biochar. Plasma pyrolysis generates two major products: syngas and slag. The syngas produced can then be used as a source of hydrogen, heat, and electricity, while the slag can potentially be reused as an AD additive or as a biofertilizer in the agricultural sector. Additionally, this study addresses the challenges associated with this integration and biochar modifications, and offers an outlook on understanding the interactions between the modified biochar properties, microbial dynamics, and the presence of micropollutants to ensure the economic viability and scalability of this technology. Anaerobic digestion (AD) presents a promising avenue for efficiently reducing sewage sludge and generating renewable energy. The success of AD systems largely relies upon the microbial community composition, which is associated with various process parameters. This review aims to investigate the correlations among the microbiota abundances, digestion performances, and process parameters based on 233 datasets in 69 publications. Statistical analysis of the datasets uncovers significant correlations between process parameters with dominant bacterial phyla and archaeal genera. The evolution of microbial relative abundance (RA) reveals that Chloroflexi are positively correlated with Actinobacteria, Spirochaetes, and Synergistetes, while Firmicutes exhibit negative correlations with Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Spirochaetes. Methanosarcina have negative correlations with Methanothrix, Methanobacterium, and Methanomassiliicoccus. Bacteria and archaea exhibit potential competitive (between syntrophic acetate-oxidizing bacteria and acetoclastic archaea) and syntrophic (between hydrogen-producing bacteria and hydrogenotrophic archaea) relationships. Furthermore, the volatile solids reduction and methane yield are significantly correlated with microbiota RAs and the ratio of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. This review sheds light on microbial interactions and thus AD performance by establishing the correlations between process parameters and microbiota composition. Future research directions should emphasize the significance of rare taxa, the necessity for experimental validation, and the potential of advanced modeling approaches to optimize sludge AD systems. Wheat straw (WS) constitutes a considerable biomass resource and can be used to produce the energy carrier methane through anaerobic digestion. Due to the low contents of several nutrient elements and water in harvested WS, the use of sewage sludge (SS), consisting of primary sludge and waste-activated sludge, as a nutrient source in co-digestion with steam-pretreated wheat straw (PWS) was investigated theoretically and practically. WS was steam-pretreated, with acetic acid as the catalyst, at 190 °C for 10 min, ending with a rapid reduction in pressure. Process stability and specific methane production were studied for the mono-digestion and co-digestion of PWS and SS in continuous stirred-tank reactors for 208 days. The HRT was 22 days and the OLR 2.1 gVS L−1 d−1. In co-digestion, the OLR was increased to 2.8 gVS L−1 d−1 for one week. Nutrient elements were added to PWS mono-digestion at two different concentration levels. Co-digestion was stable, with a total concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) at a safe level below 0.35 g L−1 at both OLRs. The higher OLR during co-digestion would require an increase in reactor volume of 14%, compared to the mono-digestion of SS, but would increase the annual production of methane by 26%. The specific methane production levels for PWS mono-digestion, SS mono-digestion, and co-digestion were 170, 320, and 260 mL g−1VS, respectively. Co-digestion did not result in a synergistic increase in the methane yield. SCFAs accumulated in the mono-digestion of PWS when using lower levels of nutrient supplements, and the concentrations fluctuated at higher nutrient levels. The main conclusion is that PWS and SS can be co-digested with long-term process stability, without the addition of chemicals other than water and acetic acid. The specific methane production for mono-digestion of PWS was relatively low. The effect of using higher concentrations of micronutrients in PWS mono-digestion should be evaluated in future studies. The concept of the circular economy represents the most relevant mainstream approach to reducing the negative environmental impact of waste. Anaerobic digestion has proved to be one of the leading and widely adopted techniques for sewage sludge treatment under the principles of the circular economy. The purpose of this study is to forecast environmental and economic indicators through modeling the extensive utilization of biogas technologies with a case study of an administrative territorial unit. The proposed methodological framework involves the use of averaged specific indicators and is based on the relationship between inhabitants, waste generation rates, biogas yield, greenhouse gas emission mitigation and biogas energy potential. The widespread use of anaerobic digestion techniques according to the proposed methodology in the instant scenario will ensure the biogas yield of 10 million Nm3 within the considered administrative territory unit with a population of 4.2 million P.E., which ultimately can be expressed in electricity and thermal generation potential of 20.8 and 24.8 million kWh*y, respectively, annual greenhouse gas elimination of 119.6 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent and capital investment attraction of EUR 65.18 million. Furthermore, all sewage sludge will be subjected to disinfection and stabilization procedures to ensure its safe utilization. The findings of this study offer an opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders to assess the environmental and economic benefits of the widespread adoption of biogas technologies. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is widely employed for sludge stabilization and waste reduction. However, the slow hydrolysis process hinders methane production and leads to prolonged sludge issues. In this study, an efficient and eco-friendly lysozyme pre-treatment method was utilized to address these challenges. By optimizing lysozyme dosage, hydrolysis and cell lysis were maximized. Furthermore, lysozyme combined with hydrothermal pretreatment enhanced overall efficiency. Results indicate that: (1) When lysozyme dosage reached 90 mg/g TS after 240 min of pretreatment, SCOD, soluble polysaccharides, and protein content reached their maxima at 855.00, 44.09, and 204.86 mg/L, respectively. This represented an increase of 85.87%, 365.58%, and 259.21% compared to the untreated sludge. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy revealed the highest fluorescence intensity in the IV region (soluble microbial product), promoting microbial metabolic activity. (2) Lysozyme combined with hydrothermal pretreatment significantly increased SCOD, soluble proteins, and polysaccharide release from sludge, reducing SCOD release time. Orthogonal experiments identified Group 3 as the most effective for SCOD and soluble polysaccharide release, while Group 9 released the most soluble proteins. The significance order of factors influencing SCOD, soluble proteins, and polysaccharide release is hydrothermal temperature > hydrothermal time > enzymatic digestion time.(3) The lysozyme-assisted hydrothermal pretreatment group exhibited the fastest release and the highest SCOD concentration of 8,135.00 mg/L during anaerobic digestion. Pyrolysis stands out as a promising method for not only stabilizing these metals but also producing biochar. Our research delves into the migration and transformation of specific HMs (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) during co-pyrolysis under various conditions, including the presence and absence of microplastics (PVC and PET). We examined different concentrations of these plastics (1 %, 5 %, 10 %, and 15 %) and temperatures (300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C). Findings reveal that microplastics, particularly PVC, enhance the migration of Zn and Mn, leading to significant volatilization of Zn and Pb at higher temperatures, peaking at 700 °C. The increase in temperature also markedly influences HM migration, with As showcasing notable loss rates that climbed by 18.0 % and 16.3 % in systems with PET and PVC, respectively, as temperatures soared from 300 °C to 700 °C. Moreover, our speciation analysis indicates that microplastics aid in transforming certain HMs from unstable to more stable forms, suggesting their beneficial role in HM stabilization during pyrolysis. A large amount of sludge is inevitably produced during sewage treatment. Ultrasonication (US) as anaerobic digestion (AD) pretreatment was implemented on different sludges and its effects on batch and semi-continuous AD performance were investigated. US was effective in sludge SCOD increase, size decrease, and CH 4 production in the subsequent AD, and these effects were enhanced with an elevated specific energy input. As indicated by semi-continuous AD experiments, the mean daily CH 4 production of US-pretreated A2O-, A2O-MBR-, and AO-AO-sludge were 176.9, 119.8, and 141.7 NmL/g-VS added , which were 35.1%, 32.1% and 78.2% higher than methane production of their respective raw sludge. The US of A2O-sludge achieved preferable US effects and CH 4 production due to its high organic content and weak sludge structure stability. In response to US-pretreated sludge, a more diverse microbial community was observed in AD. The US-AD system showed negative net energy; however, it exhibited other positive effects, e.g., lower required sludge retention time and less residual total solids for disposal. The anaerobic digestion of aqueous condensate from fast pyrolysis is a promising technology for enhancing carbon and energy recovery from waste. Syngas, another pyrolysis product, could be integrated as a co-substrate to improve process efficiency. However, limited knowledge exists on the co-fermentation of pyrolysis syngas and aqueous condensate by anaerobic cultures and the effects of substrate toxicity. This work investigates the ability of mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic mixed cultures to co-ferment syngas and the aqueous condensate from either sewage sludge or polyethylene plastics pyrolysis in semi-batch bottle fermentations. It identifies inhibitory concentrations for carboxydotrophic and methanogenic reactions, examines specific component removal and assesses energy recovery potential. The results show successful co-fermentation of syngas and aqueous condensate components like phenols and N-heterocycles. However, the characteristics and load of the aqueous condensates affected process performance and product formation. The toxicity, likely resulting from the synergistic effect of multiple toxicants, depended on the PACs' composition. At 37 °C, concentrations of 15.6 gCOD/gVSS and 7.8 gCOD/gVSS of sewage sludge-derived aqueous condensate inhibited by 50% carboxydotrophic and methanogenic activity, respectively. At 55 °C, loads between 3.9 and 6.8 gCOD/gVSS inhibited by 50% both reactions. Polyethylene plastics condensate showed higher toxicity, with 2.8 gCOD/gVSS and 0.3 gCOD/gVSS at 37 °C decreasing carboxydotrophic and methanogenic rates by 50%. At 55 °C, 0.3 gCOD/gVSS inhibited by 50% CO uptake rates and methanogenesis. Increasing PAC loads reduced methane production and promoted short-chain carboxylates formation. The recalcitrant components in sewage sludge condensate hindered e-mol recovery, while plastics condensate showed high e-mol recoveries despite the stronger toxicity. Even with challenges posed by substrate toxicity and composition variations, the successful conversion of syngas and aqueous condensates highlights the potential of this technology in advancing carbon and energy recovery from anthropogenic waste streams. Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) was one of the directions of sludge treatment, but how to effectively improve the production of methane as a resource product of anaerobic digestion of sludge still needs further research. The study examined how the combination of potassium ferrate (PF) and thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment affected methane production from sludge. The results demonstrated a positive synergistic effect on methane production with PF-TH pretreatment. Specifically, by employing a 0.05 g/g TSS (total suspended solids) PF in conjunction with TH at 80 °C for 30 min, the methane yield increased from 170.66 ± 0.92 to 232.73 ± 2.21 mL/g VSS (volatile suspended solids). The co-pretreatment of PF and TH has been substantiated by mechanism studies to effectively enhance the disintegration and biodegradability of sludge. Additionally, the variation of microbial community revealed an enrichment of active microorganisms associated with anaerobic digestion after treated with PF + TH, resulting in a total abundance increase from 11.87 to 20.45% in the PF + TH group. AbstractThe enormous generation of fecal sludge without proper treatment is a major sanitation problem. Vermicomposting of fecal sludge is an innovative way of producing value added compost called vermicompost. A vermicomposting technique that involves augmenting vermibed substrates with organic rich materials to provide additional nutrients and underlying layers needed for microcosm development to produce desirable vermicompost is mostly referred to as substrate enrichment. This study investigated the substrate enrichment of using plant-derived materials, which include coconut coir, palm coir and saw dust, combined with agricultural soil for the production of vermicompost from fecal sludge. Enriched substrates were prepared with 80 g of agricultural soil as amending material, 120 g of fecal matter (65-70% dry matter) and 160 g of the plant-derived materials. The treatments were labeled T1-T3, thus, T1 contained coconut coir, T2 contained palm coir and T3 contained saw dust, followed by a control treatment (T4) that had no plant-derived material. Treatments were triplicated and about 3-week-old 20 clitellated, E. fetida (live weight ∼255–275 mg) were used in the vermicomposting for 12 wk. Physicochemical parameters such as pH, Organic Carbon (Corg), Total Nitrogen (Ntot), Available Phosphorus (Pavail), Exchangeable Calcium (Caexch), Iron (Fe), Lead (Pb) and Aluminum (Al) test were performed. Vermicompost at T1 had the most Corg mineralization, most enhancement in Ntot, Pavail, Caexch, and least concentration of Fe, Pb and Al. Less than 20% earthworm mortality was recorded in all treatments except T4 (28.38 ± 8.71%). The enriched substrates were suitable for vermiculture with a worm weight ranged from 593.77 to 569.39 ± 2.30 mg and the vermicompost recorded high nutrient contents. The nutritious nature and the reduced metal concentration of the produced vermicompost might be safe and productive for agricultural use. To reduce the operating cost of wastewater treatment plants and in situ treatment of sewage sludge and domestic food waste, the current investigation of anaerobic codigestion of domestic food waste and primary bioflocculated sewage sludge was conducted in an anaerobic reactor coupled with a decentralized domestic wastewater treatment plant. The performance of the anaerobic reactor and wastewater treatment system was tested for 30 days. The anaerobic digester was placed after the flocculation chamber in the wastewater treatment plant to transfer the primary bioflocculated sludge using gravity. The 0.5 kg Day−1 of domestic food waste and 29 L Day−1 of bioflocculated sewage sludge were used as feedstock for an anaerobic codigestion and supernatant collected in the flocculation chamber were passed to the water treatment stages. The bioflocculated sludge was collected by adding flocculant in domestic raw wastewater and fed in a digester whereas food waste was added using the separate port in the digester on daily basis. The anaerobic digester was operated in continuous mode at mesophilic temperature conditions at a hydraulic retention time of 7 days. The physiochemical parameters for controlling the anaerobic digester were examined periodically which showed the maximum volatile fatty acid accumulation of 6,500 mg L−1 on the 12th day with the highest biomethane production of 0.35 L CH4 g−1 VSconsumed. The highest energy production potential of biogas was estimated as 0.35 kWh unit. The physical, chemical, organic, inorganic, and biological characteristics of treated water were tested to quantify the treatment efficiency of the process for the reuse of treated water. Results indicated that more than 90% of effluent was collected at the outlet of treatment units and the tested parameters were fulfilling the guidelines set by the different agencies for the reuse of effluent for various purposes. Practical Applications: This paper investigates the performance of anaerobic codigestion of food waste and bioflocculated sewage sludge coupled with a decentralized wastewater treatment plant for the ease of substrate availability. Biomethane production was used to analyze the energy generation potential of domestic sewage sludge and food waste to reduce the operating cost of wastewater treatment systems. The feeding ratio used for operating the anaerobic reactor was decided based on food waste and sewage sludge availability from typical households. The limiting values of VFA with codigestion of food waste and bioflocculated sewage sludge have been reported in the current study and compared with literature values. This work provides insights to make possible the in situ treatment of domestic wastewater along with energy generation from food waste and bioflocculated sewage sludge in an integrated system which is unavailable in the literature. In this manuscript, CH4 emissions from sludge treatment centres are quantified using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) framework, with particular focus on anaerobic digesters and digestate storage tanks. The outcomes are compared to those obtained using the carbon accounting workbook (CAW), which is the most commonly used industry tool by UK and Irish water companies to estimate the annual greenhouse gas emissions from their process operations. Path integrated concentrations are monitored with the use of an open-path tuneable diode laser absorption spectroscopy sensor embedded on a UAV. Measurements are interpolated using geostatistics (Kriging) and coupled with the mass balance approach to estimate emissions. The findings show that the CAW seems to underestimate emissions from digestate storage tanks by up to an order of magnitude. The results also show that CH4 emissions are linked with the residence time in the tank and temperature of the digestate. This study highlights the limitations of assumptions made using current reporting methods based on the carbon accounting workbook. This study proves that the UAV framework, together with the mass balance approach, provides high spatial resolution data; it captures the dynamic nature of emissions compared to the CAW and can be a cost-effective solution to estimate CH4 fluxes compared to other sensor-based systems. This work assessed the performance of a pilot‐scale cascade anaerobic digestion (AD) system when treating mixed municipal wastewater treatment sludges. The cascade system was compared with a conventional continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) digester (control) in terms of process performance, stability, and digestate quality. The results showed that the cascade system achieved higher volatile solids removal (VSR) efficiencies (28–48%) than that of the reference (25–41%) when operated at the same solids residence time (SRT) in the range of 11–15 days. When the SRT of the cascade system was reduced to 8 days the VSR (32–36%) was only slightly less than that of the reference digester that was operated at a 15‐day SRT (39–43%). Specific hydrolysis rates in the first stage of the cascade system were 66–152% higher than those of the reference. Additionally, the cascade system exhibited relatively stable effluent concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs: 100–120 mg/l), while the corresponding concentrations in the control effluent demonstrated greater fluctuations (100–160 mg/l). The cascade system's effluent pH and VFA/alkalinity ratios were consistently maintained within the optimal range. During a dynamic test when the feed total solids concentration was doubled, total VFA concentrations (85–120 mg/l) in the cascade system were noticeably less than those (100–170 mg/l) of the control, while the pH and VFA/alkalinity levels remained in a stable range. The cascade system achieved higher total solids (TS) content in the dewatered digestate (19.4–26.8%) than the control (17.4–22.1%), and E. coli log reductions (2.0–4.1 log MPN/g TS) were considerably higher (p < 0.05) than those in the control (1.3–2.9 log MPN/g TS). Overall, operating multiple CSTRs in cascade mode at typical SRTs and mixed sludge ratios enhanced the performance, stability digesters, and digestate quality of AD. As the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" strategy advances, carbon emissions have gradually become a significant indicator in selecting and evaluating sewage and sludge treatment solutions. This study compared the carbon footprints of different digested sludge post-treatment routes, taking the Lu'an project in China as an example. Considering anaerobic digestion and digested sludge post-treatment options, the carbon footprints are as follows: 347.7 kg CO2 (land application) < 459.7 kg CO2 (composting-involved land application) < 858.4 kg CO2 (brickmaking). In general, land application was superior to brickmaking from the perspective of carbon footprints. The power consumption incurred by aerating and turning and the direct N2O and CH4 emissions during composting increase the composting-involved land application carbon footprint. However, digested sludge that is not subject to high-temperature sterilization and compost is phytotoxic and can be fetid, which is a limitation of its applicability. And the composted sludge has a lower N ratio and water content, so the same N input means more sludge usage, which is conducive to solving the disposal problem of large amounts of sludge. Thus, if possible, composting-involved land application should be a preference, and improvements to the technique are required to minimize energy consumption and direct N2O and CH4 emissions. Waste management in large urban centers is one of the main challenges for public administration. Two of the most abundant wastes in cities are waste solid and municipal wastewater (MWW). Their management can be optimized if they are treated together. This work analyzed an anaerobic–aerobic system for the treatment of fruit and vegetable wastes (FVWs) and MWW. Firstly, FVWs were collected and characterized; once in the laboratory, they were placed in a tank with the MWW, aiming at transferring to the water those solids with a particle size below 105 µm; then, they were separated by sieving. The mixture of MWW and FVWs with a particle size below 105 µm was fed into an up-flow anaerobic sludge reactor (UASB); in the latter, dissolved and suspended organic matter was transformed into methane and carbon dioxide. The water that left the UASB was sent to be post-treated in an activated sludge reactor (ASR). The chemical oxygen demand (COD) was used as an evaluation parameter of the anaerobic–aerobic system; a removal efficiency higher than 80% was achieved, whereas it was 60% in the ASR. Another evaluation parameter was methane (CH4) productivity, with an average of 3.0 LCH4 L−1 d−1. VWF leaching achieved an average COD extraction of 7.68 kg∙m−3. Waste activated sludge (WAS) is attracting attention for its energy and resource potential. Anaerobic digestion (AD) can be used to efficiently recover energy resources and stabilize pollutants in WAS, with biochar emerging as an ideal additive to boost this process. However, the low abundance of surface functional groups and small pore structure of raw biochar may limit its performance in the AD of WAS. These limitations can be overcome by using functional biochar. In this review, the preparation and modification methods for functional biochar and its role in the AD of WAS are systematically summarized and discussed. Notably, the role of functional biochar in electron transfer, buffering effects, microbial immobilization, alleviation of inhibitory effects, and functional microbial modulation are analyzed. Additionally, the impacts of biochar on digestate utilization, pollutant removal, and carbon fixation are discussed. Special attention is given to functional biochar for its ability to promote circular economy and carbon neutrality. Finally, future perspectives on the use of functional biochar in the AD of WAS are presented. The aim of this review is to provide insights into the application of functional biochar in the AD of WAS from the perspective of performance improvement, resource utilization, and circular economy. This study explored the effect of a solenoid magnetic field (SOMF) as a pre-treatment on anaerobic sewage sludge (ASS) before using it in an osmotic microbial fuel cell (OMFC) as an inoculant. The ASS efficiency in terms of colony-forming unit (CFU) was improved ten times by applying SOMF compared to the control conditions. The obtained highest power density, current density, and water flux in the OMFC were 32.70 ± 5 mW·m−2, 135.13 ± 15 mA·m−2, and 4.24 ± 0.11 L·m−2h−1 respectively, for 72 h at 1 mT magnetic field. The coulombic efficiency (CE) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency were increased to 40–45% and 4–5% respectively, compared to un-treated ASS. Also, the start-up time of the ASS-OMFC system was almost reduced to 1–2 days based on open circuit voltage data. On the other hand, increasing the pre-treatment intensity of SOMF with time, it decreased the performance of OMFC. Anaerobic co-digestion is an effective method for addressing the issue of a single substrate not being able to achieve optimal conditions for anaerobic digestion. By adjusting the mixture ratio of sewage sludge and food waste to achieve the optimal carbon to nitrogen ratio, the effectiveness of thermophilic–mesophilic temperature phase anaerobic co-digestion (TPAcD) was evaluated in comparison to single phase mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion (MAcD) and thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion (TAcD). The results indicated that TPAcD increased methane yield by 50.3% and 32.7% compared to MAcD and TAcD, respectively. The variation in VFA, pH, and ammonia nitrogen levels demonstrated that TPAcD combines the advantages of both MAcD and TAcD, with a higher hydrolysis rate in the early stage under thermophilic conditions (55 °C) and a suitable environment in the later stage under mesophilic conditions (35 °C). The kinetic parameters of anaerobic co-digestions also demonstrated that TPAcD performs better. Therefore, further research on TPAcD of sewage sludge and food waste is warranted due to its significant improvements in methane production rate, total methane yield, and system stability. The co-digestion of a peach biowaste and parboiled rice effluent mixed with a sludge digester was investigated using a lab-scale biodigester. The biomasses used in the system were characterized by physical-chemical and microbiological analyses. Variations in substrate/inoculum (S/I) ratio of 1:1, 1:2, and 3:2, with different percentages of peach bagasse of 0%, 5%, and 10% in the substrate combination (peach bagasse + effluent), were performed. The study found that co-digestion of peach bagasse and parboiled rice effluent with digester sludge resulted in higher biomethane production, with reactors II and IV showing the best combination of factors both with a proportion of 3:2 (S/I). Reactor IV showed the maximum production of 27.51 mL CH 4 with a substrate composition of 10% peach bagasse and 90% effluent. The physical-chemical properties of the co-digestion substrate were optimal for anaerobic digestion, and the microbial community adapted to enhance biodegradation. The maximum COD removal was found in reactor IV at 88.06%, followed by reactor V at 82.10%. In contrast, the 1:2 (S/I) ratio in reactor I showed the lowest methane production. The objective of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of leveraging H 2 generated from biogas for 28 sanitary landfill consortia in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Two processes were analyzed: steam methane reforming (SMR) and pyrolysis reforming. Both were assessed via the economic analyses of Net Present Value (NPV), Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR). Potential biogas production from sanitary landfills was estimated along with the production of hydrogen and ammonia. Installation (CAPEX) along with operation and maintenance (OPEX) costs were estimated for the biogas purification processes and attainment of H 2. The sales rate for H 2 as a fuel source was derived for each consortium. The capacity for ammonia attainment from H 2 was determined as well as the Levelized Cost of Ammonia (LCOA). The installed capacity of the consortia varied from 18,332.05 to 2,470,525.30 kg H 2 /year. The LCOH varied from 7.01 US$/kg to 44.45 US$/kg. Comparing the three scenarios, the Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) without CO 2 capture obtained the best economic results; however, this scenario leads to the emission of CO 2. The novelty of this research resides in the use of biogas to obtain H 2 and ammonia, as well as in comparing SMR with pyrolysis. The consortium CIDES showed the best economic results. The reformation processes of CH 4 in H 2 with zero CO 2 emissions obtained the best LCOH values, thus making it less competitive in relation to fossil fuels. This research investigates the efficacy of a high-performance pilot-scale Internal Circulation Anaerobic Reactor inoculated with Granular Sludge (ICAGSR) for treating cattle slaughterhouse wastewater while concurrently generating biogas. The primary objective is to assess the efficiency and performance of ICAGSR in terms of organic pollutant removal and biogas production using granular anaerobic sludge. The research methodology entails operating the ICAGSR system under ambient conditions and systematically varying key parameters, including different Hydraulic Retention Times (HRTs) (24, 12, and 8 h) and Organic Loading Rates (OLRs) (3.3, 6.14, and 12.83 kg COD/m³. d). The study focuses on evaluating pollutants' removal and biogas production rates. Results reveal that the ICAGSR system achieves exceptional removal efficiency for organic pollutants, with Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal exceeding 74%, 67%, and 68% at HRTs of 24, 12, and 8 h, respectively. Furthermore, the system demonstrates stable and sustainable biogas production, maintaining average methane contents of 80%, 76%, and 72% throughout the experimental period. Sludge disintegration methods are particularly used as pretreatment techniques prior to the anaerobic digestion of waste sludge, and they can improve various sludge characteristics. In this study, hydrodynamic cavitation, acidic disintegration, and alkaline disintegration methods were applied to waste activated sludge obtained from a wastewater treatment plant of a canned food production facility. The changes in soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD), capillary suction time (CST), and centrifugal settleability index (CSI) were examined, and the effects of the applied methods on sludge solubility and dewaterability were compared. All disintegration methods applied in the study positively influenced the solubility of waste activated sludge and significantly increased the SCOD concentration in the sludge. Among the applied methods, hydrodynamic cavitation and alkaline disintegration (at pH 11) were found to be the most effective in increasing sludge solubility. On the other hand, these methods, which significantly increased sludge solubility, were also found to increase CST and CSI values, indicating a negative impact on the dewatering performance of the sludge. Due to low degradability of plastic materials, high usage, and low cost, microplastics (MPs) is becoming ubiquitous environmental pollutant. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are one of main sources, where most of the MPs from wastewaters ends in waste sludge. Anaerobic digestion is one of most promised techniques of waste sludge management. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the impact of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) microplastics in the waste sludge with and without ozonation as possible pretreatment, on biogas and methane production with OxiTop® method. In the first set of experiments, PET inhibited (up to 6% at 0.1 g L−1) or promoted (up to 3% at 1 g L−1) methane production but increased cumulative biogas production (up to 38% at 0.5 g L−1). PP inhibited methane production (up to 5% at 0.5 g L−1) but its impact on biogas production was dependent upon concentration of MPs added. In the second set of experiments, pretreatment of non-contaminated waste sludge by ozonation (3.54 gozone h−1) inhibited methane yield. Anaerobic digestion processes for biogas generation using alperujo have been the subject of intensive studies suggesting that phenolic compounds act as microbial inhibitors in anaerobic digestion. Pretreatments are needed to reduce the effects of phenolic compounds and improve biogas production, especially for dry anaerobic digestion. However, industrial‐scale implementation of these pretreatments is challenging, and it is unclear whether the improvement in biogas production justifies the energy expended on pretreatment. This study examines the energy analysis of dry anaerobic digestion and three alternative pretreatments: alkaline, oxidative and thermal. Results indicate that thermal pretreatment at 80°C with added water reduces phenolic compounds in alperujo by 35.4%. Meanwhile, pretreated with hydrogen peroxide in alkaline medium had the highest methane productivity (205 mL CH4/gVS). Even so, thermal pretreatment was only one with an energy return on investment greater than 1, signifying the necessity for energy analysis to ensure the viability of pretreatment processes. Anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge (WAS) towards biogas recovery is constrained by the limited hydrolysis and inhibited acetogenesis steps that hinder subsequent energy recovery. This study employed Fe(VI)/S(IV) oxidation to enhance the WAS solubilization and coupled it with the syntrophic interaction of hydrogen-producing acetogen (HPA) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to stimulate the successive procedure towards methane production. Results showed that the dosage ratio of HPA-SRB to WAS (H-S-W) with 1:1:50 outperformed with the highest methane production potential (11.63 ± 1.87 mL CH4/(g VSS·d). Meanwhile, the efficient and sequential process from acetogenesis to methanogenesis stimulated by HPA-SRB was evidenced by a significant decrease of 30.2% in the acetate concentration. The microbial community structure further manifested the crucial role of HPA-SRB with increased abundance of Desulfobulbus (2.07%), Syntrophomonas (1.24%) and Smithella (1.63%), which stimulated acetophilic methanogen boost with Methanobacterium dominating with 77.51% in H-S-W100. Furthermore, the positive syntrophic relationships among HPA-SRB and acetophilic methanogens towards methane production were confirmed via molecular ecological network and canonical correspondence analysis. This study highlighted the syntrophic cooperation of the mixed consortia of HPA and SRB on methane production based on Fe(VI)/S(IV) pretreatment and provided the theoretical and technical basis for the potential implementation of novel methanogenesis technology for WAS treatment. In order to achieve the harmless treatment and resource utilization of typical lagoon sludge, the sludge from Xiaohai Lagoon in Wanning City, Hainan Province was selected as the research subject. A soft soil curing agent, prepared from bulk industrial solid wastes such as blast furnace slag, steel slag, and industrial gypsum, was employed for sludge stabilization. The results demonstrated that the soft soil hardening agent enhanced the compressive strength, shear strength, and liquid-plastic limit of lagoon sludge while reducing leaching concentrations of heavy metals and their migration/release capacity. Additionally, it improved seed germination index to meet construction land backfill strength requirements and safety standards for garden greening soil. SEM and XRD analysis revealed that silicon and aluminum components in original lagoon sludge participated in hydration reactions under an alkaline environment provided by alkaline activators, steel slag powder and mineral powders. This resulted in numerous holes on the modified sludge surface along with stable crystallites (such as rods, flakes) and hydrated gel state products within a compacted internal structure with enhanced intergranular connections. Consequently, engineering characteristics of lagoon sludge significantly improved after being treated with a soft soil curing agent while effectively solidifying/stabilizing heavy metals present in the sludge to mitigate environmental/ecological toxicity. Over the recent years, ever-increasing population growth and higher wastewater production has been a challenge for decentralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In addition, sludge treatment due to high cost for equipment and place make authorities to find a sustainable approach in both of economical and technical perspectives. One of the proposed solutions is transferring the sludge produced from decentralized WWTP to centralized WWTP. However, the appropriate proportional ratio of raw sludge to raw sewage is a challenge, otherwise, it make anaerobic conditions and sewage rotting along the sewer network based on permissible limit of dihydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas (5 ppm). In the present study, seven reactors with different ratios of sludge to raw sewage (0, 15, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100) were used to stimulate the feasibility of transferring Shahrake Gharb WWTP sludge along the wastewater transfer pipe to the centralized sewage treatment south Tehran WWTP plant in Tehran, Iran. The septic situation and H2S emission of different reactors within 7 h (Time to reach the compound in the south treatment plant) was analyzed by gas meter. The results indicated that the optimum ratio of sludge to raw sewage was 15% without H2S production during 7 h. In addition, due to the high volume of sludge produced by the Shahrake Gharb WWTP, the optimal ratio of lime to total solids (TS) in sludge (gr/gr) (0.6) increased the sludge loading rate from 15 to 30% without any H2S emission during the stimulation study period. Therefore, the lime stabilization and transfer of sludge from a decentralized WWTP to a centralized WWTP is a feasible way to manage the sludge and enhance the treatment capacity in local WWTP. Recently, one of the main purposes of wastewater treatment plants is to achieve a neutral or positive energy balance while meeting the discharge criteria. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology is a promising technology that has low energy and footprint requirements as well as high treatment performance. The effect of co-treatment of municipal wastewater and food waste (FW) on the treatment performance, granule morphology, and settling behavior of the granules was investigated in the study. A biochemical methane potential (BMP) test was also performed to assess the methane potential of mono- and co-digestion of the excess sludge from the AGS process. The addition of FW into wastewater enhanced the nutrient treatment efficiency in the AGS process. BMP of the excess sludge from the AGS process fed with the mixture of wastewater and FW (195 ± 17 mL CH4/g VS) was slightly higher than BMP of excess sludge from the AGS process fed with solely wastewater (173 ± 16 mL CH4/g VS). The highest methane yield was observed for co-digestion of excess sludge from the AGS process and FW, which was 312 ± 8 mL CH4/g VS. The combination of microbial electrolytic cells and anaerobic digestion (MEC-AD) became an efficient method to improve CO 2 capture for waste sludge treatment. By adding CaCl 2 and wollastonite, the CO 2 sequestration effect with mineral carbonation under 0 V and 0.8 V was studied. The results showed that applied voltage could increase dissolved chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) degradation efficiency and biogas yield effectively. In addition, wollastonite and CaCl 2 exhibited different CO 2 sequestration performances due to different Ca2+ release characteristics. Wollastonite appeared to have a better CO 2 sequestration effect and provided a wide margin of pH change, but CaCl 2 released Ca2+ directly and decreased the pH of the MEC-AD system. The results showed methane yield reached 137.31 and 163.50 mL/g SCOD degraded and CO 2 content of biogas is only 12.40 % and 2.22 % under 0.8 V with CaCl 2 and wollastonite addition, respectively. Finally, the contribution of chemical CO 2 sequestration by mineral carbonation and biological CO 2 sequestration by hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis was clarified with CaCl 2 addition. The chemical and biological CO 2 sequestration percentages were 46.79 % and 53.21 % under 0.8 V, respectively. With the increased applied voltage, the contribution of chemical CO 2 sequestration rose accordingly. Sewage sludge has long been applied to soils as a fertilizer yet may be enriched with leachable metal(loid)s and other pollutants. Sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) has proven effective at metal sorption; however, risks associated with the use of engineered nanoparticles cannot be neglected. This study investigated the effects of the co-application of composted sewage sludge with S-nZVI for the stabilization of Cd, Pb, Fe, Zn. Five treatments (control, Fe grit, composted sludge, S-nZVI, composted sludge and S-nZVI), two leaching fluids; synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) fluid were used, samples were incubated at different time intervals of 1 week, 1, 3, and 6 months. Fe grit proved most efficient in reducing the concentration of extractable metals in the batch experiment; the mixture of composted sludge and S-nZVI was the most effective in reducing the leachability of metals in the column systems, while S-nZVI was the most efficient for reducing about 80% of Zn concentration in soil solution. Thus, the combination of two amendments, S-nZVI incorporated with composted sewage sludge and Fe grit proved most effective at reducing metal leaching and possibly lowering the associated risks. All the inputs and outputs of a technical system can be interpreted from an environmental point of view. Using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach, some changes that are less harmful to the environment can be included in the system. This research aims to evaluate the environmental effects of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in South Tehran, and the LCA method was used in this study. Based on the data of qualitative parameters obtained from the measurement of Tehran province's water and sewage company, the environmental emissions were calculated and analyzed using SimaPro software (9.0.0) and the standards defined under the ReCiPe 2016-midpoint method. In the ReCiPe 2016 method, the results were expressed in two intermediate levels (including three classes of influence) and final (including 18). The results showed that the treated wastewater and chlorine factors had the most adverse environmental effects. Among the 18 effect classes, the treated wastewater in the class of marine environmental toxicity with the amount of 101.1531 kg 1,4-DCB had the most environmental impacts among other classes. The power consumed by the biogas-burning combined heat and power (CHP) unit in the wastewater treatment (WWT) process reduced the environmental effects in most impact classes. The most adverse environmental effects of the WWT process are related to damage to human health and the ecosystem. Fish canning industries generate large amounts of solid waste during their processing operations, creating a significant environmental challenge. Nonetheless, this waste can be efficiently and sustainably treated through anaerobic digestion. In this study, the potential of biogas production from anaerobic digestion of thermally pretreated and co-digested solid tuna waste was investigated. The thermal pretreatment of raw fish viscera resulted in a 50 % increase in methane yield, with a production of 0.27 g COD-CH 4 /g COD added. However, this pretreatment did not lead to a significant increase in biogas production for cooked tuna viscera. When non-thermally pretreated raw viscera was tested, a large accumulation of volatile fatty acids and long chain fatty acids was observed, with levels reaching 21 and 6 g COD/L, respectively. On the other hand, anaerobic co-digestion of cooked tuna viscera with fat waste significantly enhanced methane production, achieving 0.87 g COD-CH 4 /g COD added. In contrast, co-digestion of cooked tuna viscera with dairy waste and sewage sludge resulted in notably lower yields of 0.36 and 0.46 g COD-CH 4 /g COD added, respectively. Straw pretreatment enhances the cellulose accessibility and increases the methane yield from anaerobic digestion. This study investigated the effects of alkali pretreatments with different chemical agents (NaOH, KOH, and Na2CO3) on the physicochemical and thermal characteristics of barley straw, as well as methane production from codigestion with sewage sludge. Artificial neural network modeling with a feedforward neural network (FFNN) and slime mold optimization (SMO) techniques were used to predict methane production. NaOH pretreatment was shown to be the best pretreatment for removing hemicellulose and lignin and for increasing the cellulose accessibility. Moreover, there was a 2.57-fold higher level of methane production compared to that from codigestion with untreated straw. The removal ratios for the total solids, volatile solids, and chemical oxygen demand reached 59.3, 67.2, and 73.4%, respectively. The modeling results showed that the FFNN-SMO method can be an effective tool for simulating the methane generation process, since training, validating, and testing produced very high correlation coefficients. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS) is usually limited by the low generation efficiency of methane. Fe(III)-loaded chitosan composite (CTS-Fe) have been reported to effectively enhanced the digestion of WAS, but its role in promoting anaerobic sludge digestion remains unclear. In present study, the effects of CTS-Fe on the hydrolysis and methanogenesis stages of WAS anaerobic digestion were investigated. The addition of CTS-Fe increased methane production potential by 8%–23% under the tested conditions with the addition of 5–20 g/L CTS-Fe. Besides, the results demonstrate that the addition of CTS-Fe could effectively promote the hydrolysis of WAS, evidenced by lower protein or polysaccharides concentration, higher soluble organic carbon in rector adding CTS-Fe, as well as the increased activity of extracellular hydrolase with higher CTS-Fe concentration. Meanwhile, the enrichment of Clostridia abundance (iron-reducing bacteria (IRBs)) was observed in CTS-Fe adding reactor (8.9%–13.8%), which was higher than that in the control reactor (7.9%). The observation further suggesting the acceleration of hydrolysis through dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) process, thus providing abundant substrates for methanogenesis. However, the presence of CTS-Fe was inhibited the acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis process, which could be ascribed to the Fe(III) act as electron acceptor coupled to methane for anaerobic oxidation. Furthermore, coenzyme F420 activity in the CTS-Fe added reactor was 34.9% lower than in the blank, also abundance of microorganisms involved in hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis was decreased. Currently, the recovery of resources from urban wastewater (WW) represents a priority. On this topic, the potential recovery of cellulose for its subsequent reuse in different sectors is gaining interest. In this work, a large-size conventional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was selected as a case study. A preliminary mechanical treatment was used, with the aim of separating, quantifying, and characterizing cellulose in WW. The results suggest that the per-capita production of dry primary cellulosic sludge (D-PCS) is equal to 1.46 ± 0.13 kgD-PCS PE−1 y−1, with an average calorific value of 21.04 MJ kg−1DM. Cellulosic fibres have an average length of >100 µm and a thickness of 2–5 µm. The D-PCS was subsequently treated via medium-temperature pyrolysis; a total of 29.5% of the initial D-PCS was converted into pyrolyzed primary cellulosic sludge (P-PCS) and only 26% into pyrolytic gas. More than 44.5% of the dried cellulose can be converted into pyrolytic oil. Moreover, three different scenarios of recovery have been considered, and the impact of cellulose separation in terms of COD fluxes entering the WWTP and potential energy recovery has been studied. The results suggested that, in this case study, the potential separation of the primary cellulosic sludge from the influent water flux would have no significant impact on COD load entering the biological treatments and biogas production in the anaerobic digestion of the secondary sludge. This paper presents a structured bibliometric analysis and review of the research publications recorded in the Web of Science database from 2000 to 2023 to methodically examine the landscape and development of the 'wastewater to energy' research field in relation to global trends, potential hotspots, and future research directions. The study highlights three main research themes in 'wastewater to energy', which are biogas production through anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, methane generation from microbial wastewater treatment, and hydrogen production from biomass. The analysis reveals activated sludge, biochar, biomethane, biogas upgrading, hydrogen, and circular economy as key topics increasingly gaining momentum in recent research publications as well as representing potential future research directions. The findings also signify transformation to SDGs and circular economy practices, through the integration of on-site renewables and biogas upgrading for energy self-sufficiency, optimising energy recovery from wastewater treatment systems, and fostering research and innovation in 'wastewater to energy' supported by policy incentives. By shedding light on emerging trends, cross-cutting themes, and potential policy implications, this study contributes to informing both knowledge and practices of the 'wastewater to energy' research community. The widespread use of bisphenol A (BPA) has resulted in the emergence of new pollutants in various environments, particularly concentrated in sewage sludge. This study investigated the effects of BPA on sludge anaerobic digestion, focusing specifically on the interaction of microbial communities and their metabolic responses. While the influence of BPA on methane accumulation is not significant, BPA still enhanced the conversion of soluble COD, protein, and polysaccharides. BPA also positively influenced the hydrolysis-acidogenesis process, leading to 17% higher concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Lower BPA levels (0.2–0.5 mg/kg dw) led to decreased hydrolysis and acidogenesis gene abundance, indicating metabolic inhibition; conversely, higher concentrations (1–5 mg/kg dw) increased gene abundance, signifying metabolic enhancement. Diverse methane metabolism was observed and exhibited alterations under BPA exposure. The presence of BPA impacted both the diversity and composition of microbial populations. Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi dominated in BPA-treated groups and varied in abundance among different treatments. Changes of specific genera Sedimentibacter, Fervikobacterium, Blvii28, and Coprothermobacter in response to BPA, affecting hydrolysis and acetogenesis. Archaeal diversity declined while the hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanospirillum thrived under BPA exposure. BPA exposure enabled microorganisms to form structured community interaction networks and boost their metabolic activities during anaerobic digestion. The study also observed the enrichment of BPA biodegradation pathways at high BPA concentrations, which could interact and overlap to ensure efficient BPA degradation. While thermal hydrolysis technology is commonly employed for sewage sludge treatment in extensive wastewater treatment facilities, persistent challenges remain, including issues such as ammonia-induced digestive inhibition and reduced productivity stemming from nutrient deficiency within the hydrothermal sludge. In this study, the effects of hydrothermal sludge-to-food waste mixing ratios and fermentation temperatures on anaerobic co-digestion were systematically investigated through a semi-continuous experiment lasting approximately 100 days. The results indicated that anaerobic co-digestion of hydrothermal sludge and food waste proceeded synergistically at any mixing ratio, and the synergistic effect is mainly attributed to the improvement of carbohydrate removal and digestive system stability. However, thermophilic digestion did not improve the anaerobic performance and methane yield. On the contrary, mesophilic digestion performed better in terms of organic matter removal, especially in the utilization of soluble carbohydrates, soluble proteins, and VFAs. Microbial community analysis revealed that the transition from mesophilic to thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion prompts changes in the methane-producing pathways. Specifically, the transition entails a gradual shift from pathways involving acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis to a singular hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis pathway. This shift is driven by thermodynamic tendencies, as reflected in Gibbs free energy, as well as environmental factors like ammonia nitrogen and volatile fatty acids. Lastly, it is worth noting that the introduction of food waste did lead to a reduction in cake solids following dewatering. Dewatered sludges from twenty-two sewage treatment facilities were characterized to develop the quality control indices in India. This study used fertilizer index (FI) and clean index (CI) as a tool for categorizing sludge utilization into different classes (A, B, C and limited use classes LU-1, LU-2, LU-3) by their fertilizing potential, toxicity level, pathogen presence, and vector attraction reduction criteria. The findings revealed that total P (as P2O5), total N, and K (as K2O) in the sludge samples ranged from 0.9 to 5.7%, 1.2 to 3.8%, and 0.1 to 1.5%, respectively. Moreover, all sludges belong to Class C and lower category due to the presence of toxic metals and pathogens. The helminth eggs were found in the range of 25–1450 Numbers/4gTS in sludge samples. The highest number of helminth eggs of 1450/4 g of TS was found in the fecal sludge. The specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR) values in the sludge samples varied from 0.3 to 4.9, with a median value of 1.3 and an RSD of 86% is way too high. It indicates that the sludge samples need further treatment to be less attractive as a food source for vectors and rodents. However, sludge samples have fertilizing potential and FI values ranges from 4.1 to 4.9, and CI value ranges from 2.5 to 5.0. It indicates that compost is best in quality and has high-fertilizer potential and low heavy-metal content, which is suitable for high-value crops such as organic farming. Currently, one of the main goals is to make municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) energy-neutral. However, advanced wastewater treatments and sewage sludge processing are still classified as highly energy-intensive. In this study, the energy self-sufficiency potential assessment of the WWTP located in Krosno (Poland) was evaluated. Moreover, the possible paths for improving the energy balance of the analyzed facility are presented in this paper. The performed evaluation indicated that in 2016–2019, the energy consumption at WWTP Krosno varied from 0.25 to 0.71 kWh/m3 of wastewater (average 0.51 kWh/m3), and the highest energy utilization values in each year were recorded around the summer season. An analysis of the data showed that as the pollutant load flowing into the WWTP increased, its energy utilization decreased. Such results indicate that the treatment cost per cubic meter decreases as the load increases due to the capital cost being the same. The estimated self-sufficiency of the facility in the years analyzed was 50.5%. The average energy recovery from 1 m3 of wastewater was 0.27 kWh/m3, and the average energy recovery from 1 m3 of biogas was 1.54 kWh/m3. Since the energy balance of this wastewater treatment plant, determined primarily by the continuously increasing cost of energy purchases, has to be improved, two courses of action were identified that will allow for increasing self-sufficiency. The co-digestion strategy was indicated as the easiest solution to implement, given the on-going anaerobic stabilization of sewage sludge at this WWTP. Moreover, the possible co-substrates that can be obtained from local suppliers were indicated. The second course of action, which requires a thorough economic analysis, is sludge pre-treatment, which might improve sewage sludge properties, resulting in a more favorable biogas yield. The recovery of valuable resources from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has received a great deal of attention as part of the concept of a circular economy. Anaerobic digestion for stabilizing sewage sludge in WWTPs, which produces biogas and stabilized biosolids, is a mature technology used worldwide. However, despite the necessity of achieving safe and reliable organic recycling, studies on the effect of some emerging micropollutants on this process are rare. This knowledge gap is of growing relevance because of the increasing use of some endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), microplastics (MPs), and engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in industry and human life. These compounds are ubiquitous in wastewater streams and, therefore, may have serious effects on the course of the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, raising concerns about their effects on the environment. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms by which selected EDCs, MPs, and NPs affect the valorization of sewage sludge, with a focus on the production of CH4, H2, and volatile fatty acids. This study takes into consideration the performance during all stages of anaerobic digestion, the shifts in microbial abundance and diversity, and the activity of key enzymes during the treatment process. Anaerobic co-digestion is a complex process; therefore, understanding the factors related to kinetics is a prerequisite for optimizing biogas production. In this sense, this study addressed the anaerobic co-digestion of solid waste from vegetables and fruits and anaerobic sewage sludge, focusing on the kinetic modeling of biogas production and investigated synergistic effects of the concentration of total solids (TS) and substrate particle size (SPS). For that, a Factorial Design 3(2-0) was used in which the controlled variables were TS (29.2, 39.9, and 50.5 g/L) and SPS (1.68, 2.9, and 3.36 mm), with tests carried out in 2-L reactors for 200 days to quantify the biogas produced. The modified Gompertz (MG), function transfer (FT), logistic function (LF), modified first-order (FO), and Cone (CN) kinetic models were evaluated in the description of biogas production using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and NRMSE, resulting in the following performance order: LF>CN>FO>MG>FT. The SPS influenced the cumulative biogas production (Mmax) and the hydrolysis constant, so that Mmax increased 221% when the SPS has been reduced from 3.36 to 1.68 mm. TS had an effect on the latency phase time and maximum biogas production rate (Rmax), so that Rmax was optimized by 40% when TS was adjusted from 50.5 to 29.2 g/L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Co-digestion implementation in wastewater treatment plants enhances biogas yield, so this research investigated the optimal ratio of biodegradable waste and sewage sludge. The increase in biogas production was investigated through batch tests using basic BMP equipment, while synergistic effects were evaluated by chemical oxygen demand (COD) balance. Analyses were performed in four volume basis ratios (3/1, 1/1, 1/3, 1/0) of primary sludge and food waste with added low food waste: 3.375%, 4.675%, and 5.35%, respectively. The best proportion was found to be 1/3 with the maximum biogas production (618.7 mL/g VS added) and the organic removal of 52.8% COD elimination. The highest enhancement rate was observed among co-digs 3/1 and 1/1 (105.72 mL/g VS). A positive correlation between biogas yield and COD removal is noticed while microbial flux required an optimal pH, value of 8 significantly decreased daily production rate. COD reductions further supported the synergistic impact; specifically, an additional 7.1%, 12.8%, and 17% of COD were converted into biogas during the co-digestions 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Three mathematical models were applied to estimate the kinetic parameters and check the accuracy of the experiment. The first-order model with a hydrolysis rate of 0.23–0.27 indicated rapidly biodegradable co-/substrates, modified Gompertz confirmed immediate commencement of co-digs through zero lag phase, while the Cone model had the best fit of over 99% for all trials. Finally, the study points out that the COD method based on linear dependence can be used for developing relatively accurate model for biogas potential estimation in anaerobic digestors. The necessity of production of energy from waste treatment has increased the capability of existing a/o new establishments for the biogas production. The dangerous elements of the biogas production installation, that may be subject to the Seveso III Directive (2012/18/EU), are tanks (bio-digesters), compression stations and decompression cabins, transfer point and fixed piping. The scope of this works is clarifying how the gas mixture contained within the bio-digesters should be classified, in order to consider the main safety issues for the prevention of major accidents. The biogas is in fact classified flammable gas, with thresholds range more restrictive than thresholds range applied to upgraded biogas, also referred to as biomethane, if it has been processed in accordance with applicable standards for purified biogas. The biogas upgrading and purification process takes place downstream of the digestion tanks and therefore the gas retained by the tank covers is not to be considered purified or upgraded. The gas mixture contained within biodigesters must be classified according to the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on the classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP Regulation), considering the hazard characteristics of the components of the mixture, not of the methane component only and considering the total quantity of biogas present in the plant, including the hold up of equipment used to transfer the biogas. It is finally possible to indicate some elements for the possible identification of dangers and the evaluation of risk in these installations, characterized by a relative low plant complexity and standardization, based on typical technical literature of the sector.
