The current study introduces an innovative methodology by utilizing treated wastewater (TWW) from an effluent treatment plant as a washing agent to enhance the characteristics of incineration bottom ash (IBA). This approach addresses sustainability concerns and promotes the circular economy by reusing wastewater generated in municipal solid waste incineration facilities. Previous research has underscored the challenges of open IBA reuse due to elevated leaching of chlorides, sulfates, and trace metal(loid)s. Thus, the experimental setup explores various combinations of washing, with or without screening, to optimize the properties of soil-like material (SLM < 4.75 mm) and overall material (OM < 31.5 mm) fractions of IBA for unrestricted applications. Batch leaching tests were conducted on treated samples, and leaching characteristics were evaluated in accordance with regulatory standards, primarily the Dutch standard for unrestricted IBA reuse. The findings reveal that washing in isolation proves insufficient to enhance IBA properties; however, washing followed by screening, specifically for removing fines (<0.15 mm), proves effective in reducing contamination. The study identifies that multiple steps of washing and screening (with recirculation) process render OM and SLM fractions suitable for unrestricted reuse with a cumulative liquid-to-solid ratio of 6 L/kg and a total washing time of 15 min. The multi-step treatment was found effective in reducing sulfate contamination by 65–74 % and chloride contamination by 83–89 % in IBA fractions. In recent years, microplastics (MPs) have attracted worldwide attention as emerging pollutants, and wastewater treatment plants are among the environment's most important sources of MPs. This study aimed to summarize MPs effects on various aspects of sludge systems. The results showed that MPs inhibited substance transformation in sludge systems, with greater inhibition observed at higher concentrations and smaller MP particle sizes. Moreover, low concentrations of MPs promote extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion, whereas high concentrations suppress EPS secretion, destroying the sludge structure. Granular sludge systems exhibit higher resistance to MPs than activated sludge systems owing to their layered structures. Micrometer-sized MPs primarily inhibit the dewatering performance of activated sludge through physical crushing, while nano-sized MPs primarily affect sludge dewatering through biological effects. However, for granular sludge system, micrometer-sized MPs were unable to penetrate the granular sludge interior, their affinity and aggregation capabilities enabled them to accumulate on the sludge surface. In contrast, nano-sized MPs can enter the interior of granular sludge and impair mass-transfer pathways, ultimately resulting in toxic effects. Furthermore, MPs induce various toxic effects in sludge systems (single and combined toxic effects). These toxic effects affect the expression of key enzymes and functional genes, leading to changes in microbial communities. Because of the layered structure of granular sludge systems, MPs may initially affect the microbial community structure outside the granules, with less impact on the internal microorganisms. High volume and water content makes anaerobic digestate management difficult. Environmental drawbacks and limited resource recovery are associated with traditional polymer conditioning methods. The method of polymer conditioning incurs high operating costs, affects the environment, and pollutes water. Therefore, modifying traditional polymer conditioning of mesophilic digestate (MD) is necessary to address environmental concerns and promote resource recovery. This study explored alternative chemical conditioning agents, including metal coagulant ferric chloride (FeCl3) and oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), to enhance the dewatering efficiency of MD with pH adjustment while comparing the corresponding results without pH adjustments. The goal was to determine the best chemical dose combination that minimizes polymer consumption while maximizing volume reduction. After adjusting MD's pH [ Ca(OH)2 ] to 8.0 and treating it with 2.1 kg/t dry solids (DS) polymer, 2.1 kg/t DS FeCl3 , and 600 mg/L H2O2 , significant improvements in MD dewaterability were observed, including a 96% increase in capillary suction time and 40% increase in cake solid. In addition to dewatering, improving phosphorus recovery in the digestate was investigated. The same chemical conditioning resulted in 98% elimination of P from centrate and recovered in the sludge cake. The study emphasizes the necessity of pH adjustment and choosing suitable conditioning chemicals to improve dewatering performance while considering P release implications. By reducing polymer usage and incorporating FeCl3 and H2O2 , significant improvements can be achieved in dewatering performance and P removal from MD centrate while better managing digestate. The conditioning process consists of a novel chemical combination of cationic polymer, FeCl3 , and H2O2 at an adjusted pH that would enhance the post-treatment efficiency of municipal anaerobic digestates with improved dewatering efficiency, reduced odor, improved pathogen elimination, and resource recovery. The research suggested that switching toward a two-staged temperature phased anaerobic digestion process would significantly enhance resource recovery and yield class A biosolids. Complying with class A biosolids regulations allows for broadening its practical application and increasing its market value. Contributing to the economic viability of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Research findings suggest that WWTPs can reduce polymer consumption by 40%, substantially reducing their operational costs and improving their efficiency. Improved cake solid content and reduced volume result in lowered storage and transportation costs. As a result of nutrient and resource recovery from digestate, biosolids are more economically valuable and align with sustainability goals by minimizing waste and conserving resources. In this research, odor reduction is improved by 91%, improving the quality of WWTP environments. Human activities have released numerous environmental pollutants, posing significant risks to ecological systems and human health. Toxicity assessment of environmental pollutants generally contains several principal aspects, i.e., toxicity levels, mechanisms and origins. Conventional toxicity assays can only address one of the mentioned criteria, e.g., toxicity level quantification by physicochemical methods and toxicity mechanism characterization by molecular-based analytical approaches. A comprehensive ecotoxicity risk assessment is increasingly demanded to diagnose toxicity levels, identify toxicity mechanisms and source-apportion toxicity origin. This review critically summarizes conventional toxicity assays for environmental pollutants and proposes a biosensor-biospectroscopy coupling (BBC) based test battery approach to achieve the quantification and source-appointment of ecotoxicity. It shows adequate abilities to interrogate the toxicity levels and mechanisms, distinguish the synergistic and antagonistic effects of multiple pollutants, and source-apportion the toxicities, which can be potentially incorporated into real-time water quality monitoring systems for wastewater treatment plants, on-site devices for long-term evaluation of remediation performance at contaminated sites retrospectively, or rapid risk assessment of contaminants in multiple environmental matrices for emergency response. Accurate monitoring of gastro-enteric and other diseases in large populations poses a challenge for public health management. Sewage represents a larger population, is freely obtainable and non-subject to ethical approval. Metagenomic sequencing offers simultaneous, multiple-target analysis. However, no study has demonstrated the sensitivity of metagenomics for detecting bacteria in sewage. In this study, we spot-released 1013 colony-forming units (CFU) of Staphyloccus hyicus (non-pathogenetic strain 842J-88). The strain was flushed down a toilet into the sewer in the catchment area of a public wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), serving a population of 36,000 people. Raw sewage was continuously sampled at the WWTP's inlet over 30- and 60-minute intervals for a total period of seven hours. The experiment was conducted twice with one week in-between release days and under comparable weather conditions. For the metagenomics analyses, the pure single isolate of S. hyicus was sequenced, assembled and added to a large database of bacterial reference sequences. All sewage samples were analyzed by shotgun metagenome sequencing and mapped against the reference database. S. hyicus was identified in duplicate samples at both of two release days and these sequence fragment counts served as a proxy to estimate the minimum number of sick people or sensitivity required in order to observe at least one sick person at 95% probability. We found the sensitivity to be in the range 41–140 and 16–36 sick people at release days 1 and 2, respectively. The high prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in several environments is a great concern threatening human health. Particularly, wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) become important contributors to the dissemination of ARB to receiving water bodies, due to the inefficient management or treatment of highly antibiotic-concentrated wastewaters. Hence, it is vital to develop molecular tools that allow proper monitoring of the genes encoding resistances to these important therapeutic compounds (antibiotic resistant genes, ARGs). For an accurate quantification of ARGs, there is a need for sensitive and robust qPCR assays supported by a good design of primers and validated protocols. In this study, eleven relevant ARGs were selected as targets, including aadA and aadB (conferring resistance to aminoglycosides); ampC, blaTEM, blaSHV, and mecA (resistance to beta-lactams); dfrA1 (resistance to trimethoprim); ermB (resistance to macrolides); fosA (resistance to fosfomycin); qnrS (resistance to quinolones); and tetA(A) (resistance to tetracyclines). The in silico design of the new primer sets was performed based on the alignment of all the sequences of the target ARGs (orthology grade > 70%) deposited in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database, allowing higher coverages of the ARGs' biodiversity than those of several primers described to date. The adequate design and performance of the new molecular tools were validated in six samples, retrieved from both natural and engineered environments related to wastewater treatment. The hallmarks of the optimized qPCR assays were high amplification efficiency (> 90%), good linearity of the standard curve (R2 > 0.980), repeatability and reproducibility across experiments, and a wide linear dynamic range. The new primer sets and methodology described here are valuable tools to upgrade the monitorization of the abundance and emergence of the targeted ARGs by qPCR in WWTPs and related environments. This work reports solvothermal synthesized multiferroic bismuth ferrite nanoparticles (BFO) supported PVDF-HFP membrane (PBF) for the degradation of organic pollutants (Rhodamine B). The bismuth ferrite NPs have been incorporated into the PVDF-HFP matrix in four different concentrations (PBF0, PBF2.5, PBF7.5, PBF11). The BFO perovskite crystals have successfully enhanced the piezoelectric activity of the PVDF-HFP membrane and have been found to be highest for PBF7.5, which further results in the generation of reactive radicals (ROS). These ROS have reacted with dye solutions and enhanced the piezocatalytic activity of the synthesized material. The catalytic efficiency of this membrane is found to be the highest (∼95.2 %) for PBF7.5 with promisingly rapid degradation rates (in 40 min). Furthermore, the BFO-PVDF-HFP membrane successfully extracts from the solutions which make it reusable in industries. Due to rapid development of cities, number of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) has faced drastic growth in recent decades. Reviewing the literature indicates that WWTPs in urban areas are one of the essential energy consumers, and it is necessary to evaluate their energy consumption. In Tehran, the capital of Iran, the number of WWTPs has increased to meet the demands of its increasing population. Yet, the energy consumption of these WWTPs in Tehran has not been thoroughly examined. This research aims to measure and provide the specific energy consumption of Tehran WWTPs and bridge the research gap by providing precise measurements for three key performance indicators (KPIs): energy consumption per influent volume (kWh/m³), per population-equivalent (kWh/PE-year), and per kilogram of Chemical Oxygen Demand removed (kWh/kg COD). The South Tehran Wastewater Treatment Plant (STWWTP), the largest WWTP in Tehran, demonstrated highest energy efficiency with consumption rates of 0.21 kWh/m³ for influent volume, 16.75 kWh/PE-year, and 0.48 kWh/kg COD removed. Furthermore, the smallscale WWTPs of Tehran showed a significant variation in specific energy consumption. Zargandeh Wastewater Treatment Plant (ZWWTP) represented the poorest efficiency by consuming 96.34 kWh for each person under its service and 3.66 kWh per kg COD removed. In contrast, Ekbatan Wastewater Treatment Plant (EWWTP), among the small-scale WWTPs, demonstrated great energy efficiency with consumption rates of 33.15 kWh per capita and 0.52 kWh/m³. However, this great variation in energy consumption of Tehran WWTPs needs further investigation, and strategies for improving the energy efficiency of these WWTPs are required. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most widely utilized pharmaceuticals worldwide. Besides their recognized anti-inflammatory effects, these drugs exhibit various other pleiotropic effects in several cells, including platelets. Within this article, the multifaceted properties of NSAIDs on platelet functions, activation and viability, as well as their interaction(s) with established antiplatelet medications, by hindering several platelet agonists' pathways and receptors, are thoroughly reviewed. The efficacy and safety of NSAIDs as adjunctive therapies for conditions involving inflammation and platelet activation are also discussed. Emphasis is given to the antiplatelet potential of commonly administered NSAIDs medications, such as ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and ketoprofen, alongside non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic medications like paracetamol. This article delves into their mechanisms of action against different pathways of platelet activation, aggregation and overall platelet functions, highlighting additional health-promoting properties of these anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents, without neglecting the induced by these drugs' side-effects on platelets' functionality and thrombocytopenia. Environmental issues emerging from the ever-increased subscription of these drugs are also discussed, along with the need for novel water treatment methodologies for their appropriate elimination from water and wastewater samples. Despite being efficiently eliminated during wastewater treatment processes on occasion, NSAIDs remain prevalent and are found at significant concentrations in water bodies that receive effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), since there is no one-size-fits-all solution for removing all contaminants from wastewater, depending on the specific characteristics of the wastewater. Several novel methods have been studied, with adsorption being proposed as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for wastewater purification from such drugs. This article also presents limitations and future prospects regarding the observed antiplatelet effects of NSAIDs, as well as the potential of novel derivatives of these compounds, with benefits in other important platelet functions. Bio-fillers are intensively studied for advanced polymer composite circular design and production. In this context, the algal biomass may be considered an important and relatively low-cost resource, when harvested as a by-product from wastewater treatment plants. The biomass of the algal species Chlorella vulgaris is frequently used in this type of environmental process, and its macro constituents' composition ranges from around 15–25% carbohydrates, 10–20% lipids, and 50–60% proteins. Poly (styrene-butadiene-styrene) (SBS) copolymers have a matrix composed of glassy polystyrene domains connected by flexible polybutadiene segments. Although the physical-mechanical properties of SBS copolymers recommend them for many industrial applications, they have the drawback of low biodegradability. This study aimed to assess the aerobic biodegradability of polymer composites by integrating biomass from Chlorella vulgaris at varying mass percentages of 5, 10, and 20% into SBS copolymer composites. Biodegradation tests were conducted under industrial composting conditions (58 °C and 50% relative humidity) for 180 days. The biodegradability of materials was evaluated by measuring the CO2 produced in each vessel during the study period. Potential correlations between the amount of carbon dioxide released and the percentage of biomass added to the polymer matrix were examined. Structural and morphological changes were assessed using Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Physical and chemical testing revealed a decrease in sample density after the industrial composting test, along with noticeable changes in melt flow index (MFI). The observed physical and chemical changes, coupled with FTIR, SEM, and DSC data, indicate increased cross-linking and higher porosity in biodegraded polymer structures with higher biomass content. This behavior is likely due to the formation of cross-linked connections between polymer chains and polypeptide chains resulting from protein degradation, enhancing connections between polystyrene units facilitated by peptide bonds with the benzene units of the styrene blocks within the polymer matrix. The spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through multiple reservoirs is a global concern. Wastewater is a critical AMR dissemination source, so this study aimed to assess the persistence of resistance genetic markers in wastewater using a culture‐independent approach. Raw and treated wastewater samples (n = 121) from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), a human hospital, a veterinary hospital, and a pig farm were monthly collected and concentrated by filtration. DNA was extracted directly from filter membranes, and PCR was used in the qualitative search of 32 antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Selected genes (blaCTX‐M, blaKPC, qnrB, and mcr‐1) were enumerated by quantitative real‐time PCR (qPCR). Twenty‐six ARGs were detected in the qualitative ARGs search, while quantitative data showed a low variation of the ARG's relative abundance (RA) throughout the months, especially at the human hospital and the WWTP. At the WWTP, despite significantly reducing the absolute number of gene copies/L after each treatment stage (p < 0.05), slight increases (p > 0.05) in the RAs of genes blaCTX‐M, qnrB, and mcr‐1 were observed in reused water (tertiary treatment) when compared with secondary effluent. Although the increase is not statistically significant, it is worth noting that there was some level of ARGs concentration after the disinfection process. No significant absolute or relative after‐treatment quantification reductions were observed for any ARGs at the veterinary hospital or the pig farm. The spread of ARGs through sewage needs to be continuously addressed, because their release into natural environments may pose potential risks of exposure to resistant bacteria and impact local ecosystems. Anthropogenically modified microparticles including microplastics are present in municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents; however, it is unclear whether biotic exposures are elevated downstream of these outfalls. In the fall of 2019, the present study examined whether microparticle levels in resident fish, environmental samples, and caged organisms were elevated near the Waterloo and Kitchener WWTP outfalls along the Grand River, Ontario, Canada. Wild rainbow darters (Etheostoma caeruleum) were collected from a total of 10 sites upstream and downstream of both WWTPs, along with surface water and sediment samples to assess spatial patterns over an approximately 70‐km river stretch. Amphipods (Hyalella azteca), fluted‐shell mussels (Lasmigona costata), and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were also caged upstream and downstream of one WWTP for 14 or 28 days. Whole amphipods, fish digestive tracts, and mussel tissues (hemolymph, digestive glands, gills) were digested with potassium hydroxide, whereas environmental samples were processed using filtration and density separation. Visual identification, measurement, and chemical confirmation (subset only) of microparticles were completed. Elevated abiotic microparticles were found at several upstream reference sites as well as at one or both wastewater‐impacted sites. Microparticles in amphipods, all mussel tissues, and wild fish did not show patterns indicative of increased exposures downstream of effluent discharges. In contrast, elevated microparticle counts were found in trout caged directly downstream of the outfall. Across all samples, cellulose fibers (mainly blue and clear colors) were the most common. Overall, results suggest little influence of WWTP effluents on microparticles in biota but rather a ubiquitous presence across most sites that indicates the importance of other point and nonpoint sources to this system. In this paper, we compared the sorption of copper and zinc on three adsorbents - bentonite, zeolite, and dewatered digested sludge from a wastewater treatment plant. Sorption was carried out at 27℃ and subsequently at a reduced temperature of 10℃ and the results were compared. The reduced temperature positively affected the sorption efficiency and increased the adsorption capacity of the monolayer of each sorbent. Regardless of the temperature, the sorption progression was not linear. In the initial phase, the sorption proceeded rapidly, but after about 90 min the system reached equilibrium and the concentrations of metals in solution did not change significantly. The size of the specific surface area of the sorbents did not directly correlate with the removal efficiency of Cu2+ and Zn2+. Copper sorption by bentonite reached a level of almost 100% at reduced temperature and 80% at room temperature. The efficiency of zinc removal by bentonite was found to be 40% at reduced temperature. The efficiency of copper removal using zeolite was approximately 90% at both laboratory and reduced temperature. For bentonite and zeolite, we confirmed their good sorption properties. The sludge showed low Cu2+ sorption efficiency, but Zn2+ removal efficiency was higher than bentonite and zeolite. In both cases, the reduced temperature had a positive effect on the sorption capacity of the sludge. Sludge as a waste material could be used for heavy metal removal by modifying the sorption conditions or its modifying, which should be further investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Targeted metabolomic analysis was conducted on juvenile Chinook salmon exposed for 10 days to wastewater effluent (WWE) from a large urban treatment plant. Exposures included five dilutions of WWE (20%, 5.3%, 1.4%, 0.4%, and 0.1%) and a control with 7 replicates per treatment. Liver was extracted from fish and analyzed via liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS) for 361 endogenous metabolites, of which 185 were detected. Control-versus-treatment comparisons identified several metabolites that were associated with altered biochemical pathways observed for all treatments, including several that are important for energy generation and utilization. These altered pathways are crucial for fish health and may be an early indicator of potential adverse effects on growth, reproduction, behavior, and immune function. Juvenile ocean-type Chinook salmon spend several days to weeks in the nearshore estuary where they may encounter high concentrations of WWE contaminants. They are exposed to a wide range of potent pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and industrial compounds from WWE that have the potential to affect physiological homeostasis and disrupt their normal life cycle. Wastewater treatment plants release complex mixtures of chemicals into the aquatic environment as wastewater effluent (WWE); however, the effects of these mixtures are still poorly understood. Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) are a culturally important species in the Pacific Northwest and are a vital food resource for southern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca) that are listed as 'critically endangered' under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). Chinook populations have declined drastically in this region and have failed to show significant recovery despite regional-to-federal efforts, resulting in many populations being listed as threatened under the ESA. One source of stress to juvenile Chinook is chemical pollution from WWE during their outmigration along river corridors and residency in estuaries. In this study, we investigated effects of WWE on juvenile Chinook health in a ten-day exposure to dilutions of WWE from 0.1% to 20%. At the end of the exposure, we measured endpoints associated with endocrine disruption, brain function, osmoregulation, stress, and metabolism. Exposure to WWE significantly (a = 0.1 for all analyses) induced vitellogenesis, indicating endocrine system disruption. We saw significant reductions in plasma glucose, an indication of stress, and brain Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) activity, an enzyme essential for neuronal signaling. Lastly, metabolism was affected as evidenced by altered total protein, cholesterol, and albumin in plasma, a drastic decrease in whole body lipid content, and a significant increase in visible liver anomalies. We compared contaminant concentrations in exposure water with effects concentrations from the literature for chemicals known to induce vitellogenin or inhibit brain NKA. For most contaminants, concentrations in exposure waters were several orders of magnitude below effects concentrations in the literature. The exception was estrogenic hormones, which were detected at similar concentrations in this study compared to concentrations in other studies that induced vitellogenin. Based on comparisons to the literature, contaminants measured in this study could not explain the inhibition of brain NKA; however, WWE mixtures contain many quantified and undetected compounds that are likely acting together to cause harmful effects in Chinook. Every year human discharges about 350 million tons of plastic waste into the environment and can be projected to triple in 2060 without any attempts to change situation. From 1970 to 2019, an estimation of 130 million tons of plastic waste was accumulated into the rivers, lakes and sea, while only 27 % is recycled and utilized. Moreover, waste treatment plants in most places around the world are using out-of-date technology, may pose a threat to the health of the workers. Therefore, it is essential to modernize these systems for protecting human health. This paper proposes fine-tuning DETR, which applies Artificial Intelligent in plastic waste sorting system. Consequently, this study analyzed the applicability of fine-tuning DETR in the domain of plastic waste categorization and its potential drawbacks. For fair experiment and evaluation, model candidates were trained and evaluated on an industrial plastic waste dataset. The fine-tuning DETR outperformed other candidates in the context of critical indicators, from accuracy (25.1 mAP), processing speed (28 FPS) to computational cost (GFLOPs 86). Furthermore, fine-tuning DETR possesses the capability of autonomous operation without requiring human intervention, distinguishing this candidate from other prevalent algorithms. Our research demonstrates that, fine-tuning DETR specifically and Transformer-based algorithms in general, are entirely suitable and hold significant potential for large-scale application in holistic plastic waste sorting systems. Background: Plastics pollution and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are two major environmental threats, but potential connections between plastic associated biofilms, the 'plastisphere', and dissemination of AMR genes are not well explored. Results: We conducted mesocosm experiments tracking microbial community changes on plastic surfaces transitioning from wastewater effluent to marine environments over 16 weeks. Commonly used plastics, polypropylene (PP), high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) incubated in wastewater effluent, river water, estuarine water, and in the seawater for 16 weeks, were analysed via 16S rRNA gene amplicon and shotgun metagenome sequencing. Within one week, plastic-colonizing communities shifted from wastewater effluent-associated microorganisms to marine taxa, some members of which (e.g. Oleibacter-Thalassolituus and Sphingomonas spp., on PET, Alcanivoracaceae on PET and PP, or Oleiphilaceae, on all polymers), were selectively enriched from levels undetectable in the starting communities. Remarkably, microbial biofilms were also susceptible to parasitism, with Saprospiraceae feeding on biofilms at late colonisation stages (from week 6 onwards), while Bdellovibrionaceae were prominently present on HDPE from week 2 and LDPE from day 1. Relative AMR gene abundance declined over time, and plastics did not become enriched for key AMR genes after wastewater exposure. Conclusion: Although some resistance genes occurred during the mesocosm transition on plastic substrata, those originated from the seawater organisms. To effectively enhance the resource utilization of biomass waste and realize waste recycling, a novel acid-modified magnetic biomass spent tea leaves (NiFe2O4/STLs) was prepared via the pyrolysis and co-precipitation methods and employed to eliminate bivalent mercury (Hg(II)) from water bodies. The as-prepared NiFe2O4/STLs exhibited strong magnetic property of 35.36 emu g−1 and could be easily separated from water by applying a magnetic field. The adsorption of Hg(II) over NiFe2O4/STLs was achieved under the optimal conditions of pH = 8 and T = 30 °C, and the maximum adsorption capacity towards Hg(II) was 204.42 mg g−1 according to the response surface methodology optimization. The removal of Hg(II) over NiFe2O4/STLs primarily involved ion exchange, electrostatic attraction and chelation, following the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, and attributed to an exothermic reaction. In addition, the magnetic biomass NiFe2O4/STLs exhibited good regeneration capability and chemical and mechanical stability. The application results revealed that inorganic salt ions, the nitrogen fertilizer urea, humus and other impurities in four different actual water bodies (tap water, river water, lake water and the effluent of sewage treatment plant) had a little impact on the adsorption of Hg(II) over NiFe2O4/STLs. Over the recent years, ever-increasing population growth and higher wastewater production has been a challenge for decentralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In addition, sludge treatment due to high cost for equipment and place make authorities to find a sustainable approach in both of economical and technical perspectives. One of the proposed solutions is transferring the sludge produced from decentralized WWTP to centralized WWTP. However, the appropriate proportional ratio of raw sludge to raw sewage is a challenge, otherwise, it make anaerobic conditions and sewage rotting along the sewer network based on permissible limit of dihydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas (5 ppm). In the present study, seven reactors with different ratios of sludge to raw sewage (0, 15, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100) were used to stimulate the feasibility of transferring Shahrake Gharb WWTP sludge along the wastewater transfer pipe to the centralized sewage treatment south Tehran WWTP plant in Tehran, Iran. The septic situation and H2S emission of different reactors within 7 h (Time to reach the compound in the south treatment plant) was analyzed by gas meter. The results indicated that the optimum ratio of sludge to raw sewage was 15% without H2S production during 7 h. In addition, due to the high volume of sludge produced by the Shahrake Gharb WWTP, the optimal ratio of lime to total solids (TS) in sludge (gr/gr) (0.6) increased the sludge loading rate from 15 to 30% without any H2S emission during the stimulation study period. Therefore, the lime stabilization and transfer of sludge from a decentralized WWTP to a centralized WWTP is a feasible way to manage the sludge and enhance the treatment capacity in local WWTP. Water recycling and reuse are cornerstones of water management, which can be compromised by the presence of pollutants. Among these, pharmaceuticals can overcome standard water treatments and require sophisticated approaches to remove them. Sorption is an economically viable alternative limited by the need for sorbents with a sorption coefficient (Kd) higher than 500 L/kg. The cross-linking of dextrin (Dx) with divinyl sulfone (DVS) in the presence of 1 mmol or 5 mmol of ibuprofen (IBU) yields the insoluble polymers pDx1 and pDx5 with improved affinity for IBU and high selectivity towards erythromycin (ERY) and ERY Kd higher than 4 × 103 L/kg, when tested against a cocktail of six drugs. Characterization of the polymers shows that both pDx1 and pDx5 have similar properties, fast sorption kinetics, and ERY Kd of 13.3 × 103 for pDx1 and 6.4 × 103 for pDx5, representing 26.6 and 12.0 times the 500 L/kg threshold. The fact that new affinities and improvements in Kd can be achieved by cross-linking Dx in the presence of other molecules that promote pre-organization expands the applications of DVS cross-linked polysaccharides as sustainable, scalable, and environmentally friendly sorbents with a potential application in wastewater treatment plants (WTPs). The mushroom agroindustry generates a huge amount of waste from mushroom production (WMP). The composition of WMP is not standardized but differs mainly in terms of organic matter (OM) content and OM biodegradability. This makes WMP management, including anaerobic digestion (AD), a significant challenge. A potential solution could be co-digestion of WMP with municipal sewage sludge (SS), especially SS generated in small rural wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Therefore, this study investigated mesophilic methane production (MP) from WMP, SS, and mixtures of SS and WMP at ratios of 70:30, 50:50, and 30:70 (w/w OM). Even though the maximum cumulative MP from WMP was relatively low (approx. 60 NL/kg OM), co-digesting WMP with SS increased both MP and the methane content of the biogas: with 30%, 50%, and 70% shares of SS, MP increased almost 2, 2.5, and 3.3 times, and the methane content increased to 61%, 62%, and 64%, respectively. As the SS content was increased, the kinetic coefficients of MP and OM removal decreased (from 0.211 to 0.146 d−1 and from 0.215 to 0.152 d−1), whereas the initial rate of MP and of OM removal increased (from 12.5 to 36.8 NL/(kg OM·d) and from 0.51 kg OM/(m3·d) to 0.59 kg OM/(m3·d), respectively). The effectiveness of OM removal (EOMrem) was lowest with WMP only, at 46.6%. When the SS content of the mixtures was increased to 30%, 50%, and 70%, EOMrem also increased to 55.3%, 60.1%, and 64.9%, respectively. The relationship between maximal MP and the overall OM removed was such that both increased simultaneously. The higher values of EOMrem and, consequently, the lower final contents of OM with more effective MP indicate that the organics were degraded more efficiently. These results suggest that co-digestion may be a profitable solution for simultaneously utilizing both of these waste products, increasing the efficiency of biogas production to such an extent that it would be profitable to conduct AD on mushroom farms. This is a flexible approach that allows varying proportions of WMP and SS to be used, depending on the availability of both substrates and the energy needs of the mushroom farm. This work aims to improve the continuous co-fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) and food waste (FW) by investigating the long-term impact of temperature on fermentation performance and the underpinning microbial community. Acidogenic co-fermentation of WAS and FW (70:30 % VS-basis) to produce volatile fatty acids (VFA) was studied in continuous fermenters at different temperatures (25, 35, 45, 55 °C) at an organic loading rate of 11 gVS/(L·d) and a hydraulic retention time of 3.5 days. Two batches of WAS (A and B) were collected from the same wastewater treatment plant at different periods to understand the impact of the WAS microbioota on the fermenters' microbial communities. Solubilisation yield was higher at 45 °C (575 ± 68 mgCOD/gVS) followed by 55 °C (508 ± 45 mgCOD/gVS). Fermentation yield was higher at 55 °C (425 ± 28 mgCOD/gVS) followed by 35 °C (327 ± 17 mgCOD/gVS). Temperature also had a noticeable impact on the VFA profile. At 55 °C, acetic (40 %) and butyric (40 %) acid dominated, while acetic (37 %), butyric acid (31 %), and propionic acid (17 %) dominated at 35 °C. At 45 °C, an accumulation of caproic acid was detected which did not occur at other temperatures. Each temperature had a distinct microbial community, where the WAS microbiota played an important role. The biomass mass-balance showed the highest growth of microorganisms (51 %) at 35 °C and WAS_B, where a consumption of acetic acid was observed. Microbial attacks rapidly degrade concrete structures in wastewater facilities, leading to brief service lifespans. Hence, producing concrete resistant to chemical and sulfuric acid corrosion is more cost-effective. In the present study, a total of six concrete mixtures incorporating 7.5% silica fumes (SF) and 10% natural zeolite (ZE) were immersed in 0.5% and 1% sulfuric acid solutions with a maximum pH threshold of 2 and 1, respectively, for 70 weeks. The specimens were regularly monitored for surface deterioration, mass change and crushing load change. To better understand the relationship between the pore structure of concrete mixtures and resistance to sulfuric acid, various durability tests such as rapid chloride penetration, water absorption, electrical resistivity and chloride diffusion coefficient were performed. Based on the results obtained, converting calcium hydroxide into calcium silicate hydrate gel through pozzolanic reactions and then refining the porosity of concrete with silica fumes (SF) and natural zeolite (ZE) was effective in enhancing the resistance of concrete to attack by sulfuric acid of relatively low concentration. As a result, using silica fumes (SF) and natural zeolite (ZE) is a lower-cost method for reducing corrosion rates to extend the service life of facilities, particularly in lower concentrations. The excessive use of antibiotics has resulted in the contamination of the environment with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a significant threat to public health. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are known to be reservoirs of ARGs and considered to be hotspots for horizontal gene transfer (HGT) between bacterial communities. However, most studies focused on the distribution and dissemination of ARGs in hospital and urban WWTPs, and little is known about their fate in industrial WWTPs. In this study, collected the 15 wastewater samples containing N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) from five stages of the anaerobic anoxic aerobic (AAO) process in an industrial WWTPs. The findings revealed a stepwise decrease in DMF and chemical oxygen demand (COD) content with the progression of treatment. However, the number and abundances of ARGs increase in the effluents of biological treatments. Furthermore, the residues of DMF and the treatment process altered the structure of the bacterial community. The correlation analysis indicated that the shift in bacterial community structures might be the main driver for the dynamics change of ARGs. Interestingly, observed that the AAO process may acted as a microbial source and increased the total abundance of ARGs instead of attenuating it. Additionally, found that non-pathogenic bacteria had higher ARGs abundance than pathogenic bacteria in effluents. The Danube is a significant transboundary river on a global scale, with several tributaries. The effluents from industrial operations and wastewater treatment plants have an impact on the river's aquatic ecosystem. These discharges provide a significant threat to aquatic life by deteriorating the quality of water and sediment. Hence, a total of 16 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) compounds were analyzed at six locations along the river, covering a period of 12 months. The objective was to explore the temporal and spatial fluctuations of these chemicals in both water and sediment. The study revealed a significant fluctuation in the concentration of PAHs in water throughout the year, with levels ranging from 224.8 ng/L during the summer to 365.8 ng/L during the winter. Similarly, the concentration of PAHs in sediment samples varied from 316.7 ng/g in dry weight during the summer to 422.9 ng/g in dry weight during the winter. According to the Europe Drinking Water Directive, the levels of PAHs exceeded the permitted limit of 100 ng/L, resulting in a 124.8% rise in summer and a 265.8% increase in winter. The results suggest that the potential human-caused sources of PAHs were mostly derived from pyrolytic and pyrogenic processes, with pyrogenic sources being more dominant. Assessment of sediment quality standards (SQGs) showed that the levels of PAHs in sediments were below the Effect Range Low (ERL), except for acenaphthylene (Acy) and fluorene (Fl) concentrations. This suggests that there could be occasional biological consequences. The cumulative Individual Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) exceeds 1/104 for both adults and children in all sites. All the inputs and outputs of a technical system can be interpreted from an environmental point of view. Using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach, some changes that are less harmful to the environment can be included in the system. This research aims to evaluate the environmental effects of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in South Tehran, and the LCA method was used in this study. Based on the data of qualitative parameters obtained from the measurement of Tehran province's water and sewage company, the environmental emissions were calculated and analyzed using SimaPro software (9.0.0) and the standards defined under the ReCiPe 2016-midpoint method. In the ReCiPe 2016 method, the results were expressed in two intermediate levels (including three classes of influence) and final (including 18). The results showed that the treated wastewater and chlorine factors had the most adverse environmental effects. Among the 18 effect classes, the treated wastewater in the class of marine environmental toxicity with the amount of 101.1531 kg 1,4-DCB had the most environmental impacts among other classes. The power consumed by the biogas-burning combined heat and power (CHP) unit in the wastewater treatment (WWT) process reduced the environmental effects in most impact classes. The most adverse environmental effects of the WWT process are related to damage to human health and the ecosystem. Surveillance methods of circulating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are of utmost importance in order to tackle what has been described as one of the greatest threats to humanity in the 21st century. In order to be effective, these methods have to be accurate, quickly deployable, and scalable. In this study, we compare metagenomic shotgun sequencing (TruSeq DNA sequencing) of wastewater samples with a state-of-the-art PCR-based method (Resistomap HT-qPCR) on four wastewater samples that were taken from hospital, industrial, urban and rural areas. ARGs that confer resistance to 11 antibiotic classes have been identified in these wastewater samples using both methods, with the most abundant observed classes of ARGs conferring resistance to aminoglycoside, multidrug-resistance (MDR), macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB), tetracycline and beta-lactams. In comparing the methods, we observed a strong correlation of relative abundance of ARGs obtained by the two tested methods for the majority of antibiotic classes. Finally, we investigated the source of discrepancies in the results obtained by the two methods. This analysis revealed that false negatives were more likely to occur in qPCR due to mutated primer target sites, whereas ARGs with incomplete or low coverage were not detected by the sequencing method due to the parameters set in the bioinformatics pipeline. Indeed, despite the good correlation between the methods, each has its advantages and disadvantages which are also discussed here. By using both methods together, a more robust ARG surveillance program can be established. Laboratory experiments offer one way to introduce more realism in education and play a key role for the acquisition of practical skills, especially in engineering. This paper addresses the development of an equipment to teach fundamentals of industrial process control engineering mainly for undergraduate courses at the University of Extremadura. The laboratory consists of the DELTALAB–COSIMI wastewater treatment plant SP244, which is controlled by a CompactRIO-9014 high-performance real-time embedded controller, a kind of programmable logic controller of National Instruments. Learning objectives and a summary of students activities carried out in the laboratory lessons are given to illustrate the possibilities of use of this equipment for teaching of industrial process control. We evaluated a unique model in which four full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with the same treatment schematic and fed with similar influent wastewater were tracked over an 8-month period to determine whether the community assembly would differ in the activated sludge (AS) and sand filtration (SF) stages. For each WWTP, AS and SF achieved an average of 1-log10 (90%) and <0.02-log10 (5%) reduction of total cells, respectively. Despite the removal of cells, both AS and SF had a higher alpha and beta diversity compared to the influent microbial community. Using the Sloan neutral model, it was observed that AS and SF were individually dominated by different assembly processes. Specifically, microorganisms from influent to AS were predominantly determined by the selective niche process for all WWTPs, while the microbial community in the SF was relatively favored by a stochastic, random migration process, except two WWTPs. AS also contributed more to the final effluent microbial community compared with the SF. Given that each WWTP operates the AS independently and that there is a niche selection process driven mainly by the chemical oxygen demand concentration, operational taxonomic units unique to each of the WWTPs were also identified. The findings from this study indicate that each WWTP has its distinct microbial signature and could be used for source-tracking purposes. IMPORTANCE This study provided a novel concept that microorganisms follow a niche assembly in the activated sludge (AS) tank and that the AS contributed more than the sand filtration process toward the final microbial signature that is unique to each treatment plant. This observation highlights the importance of understanding the microbial community selected by the AS stage, which could contribute toward sourcetracking the effluent from different wastewater treatment plants. Antibiotic concentrations in wastewater generated by industries such as sewage treatment plants, medical pharmaceuticals and aquaculture has exceeded acceptable levels. It is particularly urgent to seek a method that can efficiently remove antibiotics. The removal potential of three quinolone antibiotics, pefloxacin (PF), levofloxacin (LF) and norfloxacin (NF), in simulated contaminated water was studied using a biochar-based nanomaterial prepared by a hydrothermal method. The data were fitted with adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics. The results showed that ZnS–MoS2 activated biochar (ZMMBC) acheived maximum adsorption amounts of 199.42, 125.00 and 142.58 mg g–1 for PF, LF and NF, suggesting that ZMMBC has excellent adsorption performance. The adsorption mechanisms of PF, LF and NF molecules on ZMMBC include complexation, pore filling, π–π interactions, electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bond interactions. MoS2 and ZnS modified biochar (ZMMBC) was synthesised by hydrothermal method. The removal potential of pefloxacin (PF), levofloxacin (LF) and norfloxacin (NF) was studied. It only takes 90 min for ZMMBC to reach its maximum adsorption capacity. In recent years, many countries have been confronted with an extended period of drought, necessitating innovative water supply solutions for both human consumption and agricultural irrigation. In response, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have emerged as pivotal agents in water recycling, catering to agricultural needs and environmental considerations. These plants facilitate the transformation of wastewater into potable or irrigation-ready water. Amidst the array of WWTP designs, the "Continuous-Station" holds a distinctive position, featuring a monolithic steel-structure meticulously crafted from either conventional or stainless-steel. Presently, the prevalent approach involves the application of anti-corrosion paint to protect this monolithic structure from the corrosive effects of aggressive substances present in wastewater. However, an innovative strategy is being explored - the incorporation of tungsten, an anti-corrosive element, into the stainless-steel alloy. This integration shows promising potential to enhance resilience against the relentless degradation forces within wastewater, simultaneously bolstering the mechanical properties of the steel. This research paper exclusively focuses on analyzing, analytically, the hydrostatic bending performance of WWTP structural components infused with nano-tungsten-particles. The range of incorporation spans from a baseline of 0%, representing the steel without any infusion, to an optimal threshold of 30% relative to the overall volume of the steel matrix. The elastic-properties of the composite steel-tungsten alloy are characterized using Mori-Tanaka's homogenization model. The WWPT structural components are simplified as plates and analyzed using an advanced mathematical model based on the refined plate theory. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are abundant in aquatic ecosystems affected by human activities. Understanding the fate of ARGs across different ecosystems is essential because of the significant role aquatic environments play in the cycle of antibiotic resistance. We quantified selected ARGs in Lake Maggiore, its main tributaries, and the effluent of the main wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharging directly into the lake. We linked their dynamics to the different anthropogenic impacts in each tributary's watershed. The dynamics of tet A in the lake were influenced by those of the rivers and the WWTP effluent, and by the concentration of N-NH4, related to anthropogenic pollution, while sul 2 abundance in the lake was not influenced by any water inflow. The dynamics of the different ARGs varied across the different rivers. Rivers with watersheds characterized by high population density, touristic activities, and secondary industries released more ARGs, while erm B correlated with higher numbers of primary industries. This study suggests a limited contribution of treated wastewater in the spread of ARGs, indicating as prevalent origin other sources of pollution, calling for a reconsideration on what are considered the major sources of ARGs into the environment. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is commonly associated with the ability to acquire antimicrobial resistance. The surveillance of resistance genes in various environmental matrices has gained prominence in recent years, being seen as a potential threat to public health. The objective of this study was to investigate genes encoding metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs), which confer resistance to carbapenems, in wastewater. Fifteen isolates of P. aeruginosa were collected for five months from samples obtained from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Rio Grande do Sul. These isolates were subjected to disk diffusion testing using 10 different antimicrobials. Phenotypic enzymatic tests for MBLs were conducted, and positive isolates underwent DNA extraction and gene detection using the polymerase chain reaction. The resistance rate to ceftazidime was 100%, cefepime 73.3%, piperacillin-tazobactam 66.67%, imipenem 53.30%, levofloxacin 46.67%, tobramycin 40%, and ciprofloxacin and amikacin 13.33%. Both meropenem and aztreonam resistances were rare accounting for 6.60% of the tested isolates. Among these isolates, 20% were classified as multidrug-resistant and were found to carry the blaNDM and blaSPM genes. The results suggest that evaluating resistance genes in bacteria from urban raw sewage can provide data that assist in surveillance, as this environment can stimulate increased bacterial resistance. Ensuring the effluent quality despite fluctuations in influent flow rate and organic load to municipal wastewater treatment plants is critical. This study investigated the performance of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) in handling hydraulic and organic loading shocks during wastewater treatment. The ability of the MBR to remove COD, BOD5, and turbidity from synthetic wastewater was evaluated at steady-state and after applying five levels of organic shock loads (1.5×-4×) and four levels of hydraulic shocks (1.2×-4.7×). Due to the short-term shock-loadings no discernible effect was observed on the mixed liquor suspended solids implying biological stability. The average COD removal in MBR exposed to organic and hydraulic shock loads was 93.8% and 94%, respectively, similar to average BOD5 removals of 94.4% and 93.6%. Tetracycline antibiotics are widely used in human medical treatment, control of animal disease, and agricultural feed because of their broad spectrum of action, high efficiency, and low cost. The excessive use of antibiotics and arbitrary discharge of antibiotic wastewater have become increasingly serious problems, and the current sewage-treatment process is not ideal for treating water contaminated with tetracycline antibiotics, leading to increasingly prominent antibiotic pollution in water and the imminent need for its removal. In order to understand the necessity of removing tetracycline antibiotics from the water environment, this paper first expounds on their source, harms, and pollution status in oceans and in surface water, groundwater, wastewater, and drinking water. It next introduces the research status of conventional treatment methods such as adsorption methods, biological methods, and physical and chemical methods, then introduces new treatment methods such as advanced oxidation methods and comprehensive treatment technology in sewage plants. The degradation effects, mechanisms of action, and challenges of these methods were summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of each treatment technology are compared. The concentration of viruses in sewage sludge is significantly higher (10–1000-fold) than that found in natural environments, posing a potential risk for human and animal health. However, the composition of these viruses and their role in the transfer of pathogenic factors, as well as their role in the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed a shotgun metagenomic approach to investigate the pathogenic bacteria and viral composition and function in two wastewater treatment plants located on a campus. Our analysis revealed the presence of 1334 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) across six sludge samples, with 242 ASVs (41.22% of total reads) identified as pathogenic bacteria. Arcobacter was found to be the most dominant pathogen accounting for 6.79% of total reads. The virome analysis identified 613 viral genera with Aorunvirus being the most abundant genus at 41.85%. Approximately 0.66% of these viruses were associated with human and animal diseases. More than 60% of the virome consisted of lytic phages. Host prediction analysis revealed that the phages primarily infected Lactobacillus (37.11%), Streptococcus (21.11%), and Staphylococcus (7.11%). Furthermore, our investigation revealed an abundance of auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) involved in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling within the virome. We also detected a total of 113 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), covering major classes of antibiotics across all samples analyzed. Additionally, our findings indicated the presence of virulence factors including the clpP gene accounting for approximately 4.78%, along with toxin genes such as the RecT gene representing approximately 73.48% of all detected virulence factors and toxin genes among all samples analyzed. This study expands our understanding regarding both pathogenic bacteria and viruses present within sewage sludge while providing valuable insights into their ecological functions. Pharmaceuticals and household chemicals are neither fully consumed nor fully metabolized when routinely used by humans, thereby resulting in the emission of residues down household drains and into wastewater collection systems. Since treatment systems cannot entirely remove these substances from wastewaters, the contaminants from many households connected to sewer systems are continually released into surface waters. Furthermore, diffuse contributions of wastewaters from populations that are not connected to treatment systems can directly (i.e., through surface runoff) or indirectly (i.e., through soils and groundwater) contribute to contaminant concentrations in rivers and lakes. The unplanned and unmonitored release of such contaminants can pose important risks to aquatic ecosystems and ultimately human health. In this work, the contaminant fate model HydroFATE is presented, which is designed to estimate the surface-water concentrations of domestically used substances for virtually any river in the world. The emission of compounds is calculated based on per capita consumption rates and population density. A global database of wastewater treatment plants is used to separate the effluent pathways from populations into treated and untreated and to incorporate the contaminant pathways into the river network. The transport in the river system is simulated while accounting for processes of environmental decay in streams and in lakes. To serve as a preliminary performance evaluation and proof of concept of the model, the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was chosen, due to its widespread use and the availability of input and validation data. The comparison of modelled concentrations against a compilation of reported SMX measurements in surface waters revealed reasonable results despite inherent model uncertainties. A total of 409 000 km of rivers were predicted to have SMX concentrations that exceed environmental risk thresholds. Given the high spatial resolution of predictions, HydroFATE is particularly useful as a screening tool to identify areas of potentially elevated contaminant exposure and to guide where local monitoring and mitigation strategies should be prioritized. A significant amount of energy in wastewater treatment plants is spent on aeration to treat the organic matter with microorganisms in an oxygen-enriched environment. In this study, a novel and simplistic aeration concept known as Confined Tube Aeration (CTA) is proposed, in which the main elements are a Venturi injector and a coiled tube at its outlet. Two Venturi injector diameters were chosen for evaluation in this study, measuring 1 inch (25.4 mm) and 4 inch (101.6 mm). In this study, a relationship was developed between air suction rate and pressure differential across the injector. Then, a numerical model was developed to analyze hydrodynamic conditions and evaluate system performance. The main findings are that the larger diameter aerator performs 20% better than the smaller injector in terms of standard aeration efficiency (SAE), with a maximal value of 0.74 kgO2/kWh found for the larger diameter system. These results suggest that future SAE improvements may be made for larger diameter systems in full-scale wastewater treatment applications with suitably designed injectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Classifying the flow subsequences of sensor networks is an effective way for fault detection in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Traditional fault detection algorithms identify exceptions by a single abnormal dataset and do not pay attention to the factors such as electromagnetic interference, network delay, sensor sample delay, and so on. This paper focuses on fault detection by continuous abnormal points. We proposed a fault detection algorithm within the module of sequence state generated by unsupervised learning (SSGBUL) and the module of integrated encoding sequence classification (IESC). Firstly, we built a network module based on unsupervised learning to encode the flow sequence of the different network cards in the IIoT gateway, and then combined the multiple code sequences into one integrated sequence. Next, we classified the integrated sequence by comparing the integrated sequence with the encoding fault type. The results obtained from the three IIoT datasets of a sewage treatment plant show that the accuracy of the SSGBUL–IESC algorithm exceeds 90% with subsequence length 10, which is significantly higher than the accuracies of the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm and the time series forest (TSF) algorithm. The sheets are fabricated by combining sugarcane bagasse pulp as a scaffold with commercial, naturally activated carbon, and bimetallic‐prepared adsorbents. Sugarcane bagasse is utilized in producing activated carbon because of its high carbon contents, availability, and low cost. The prepared composite sheets are synthesized and investigated for pollutants removal of crystal violet (CV), methyl orange (MO), and Chromium (CI) dyes. Different weight ratios of activated carbon are used to form a bio‐composite mixed sheet. The formed sheets' morphology is performed via a high scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). To determine the adsorption mechanism, the intra‐particle diffuse screening experiment is used to test the experimental data. All the prepared sheets can retain the pollutants, with the best removal efficiency of 98% for methyl orange adsorption onto the bio‐composite mixed sheet. The results of the parameter (time, concentration, and dose) sets provided valuable proof that the adsorption of methyl orange onto the bio‐composite sheet mixed with naturally activated carbon is an endothermic phenomenon involving physical adsorption. A multi-residue UHPLC–MS/MS analytical method, previously developed for monitoring 52 pharmaceuticals in drinking water, was used to analyse these pharmaceuticals in wastewater originating from healthcare facilities in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, the methodology was expanded to include the evaluation of the effectiveness of drug removal in Czech wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Of the 18 wastewater samples analysed by the validated UHPLC-MS/MS, each sample contained at least one quantifiable analyte. This study reveals the prevalence of several different drugs; mean concentrations of 702 μg L−1 of iomeprol, 48.8 μg L−1 of iopromide, 29.9 μg L−1 of gabapentin, 42.0 μg L−1 of caffeine and 82.5 μg L−1 of paracetamol were present. An analysis of 20 samples from ten WWTPs revealed different removal efficiencies for different analytes. Paracetamol was present in the inflow samples of all ten WWTPs and its removal efficiency was 100%. Analytes such as caffeine, ketoprofen, naproxen or atenolol showed high removal efficiencies exceeding 80%. On the other hand, pharmaceuticals like furosemide, metoprolol, iomeprol, zolpidem and tramadol showed lower removal efficiencies. Four pharmaceuticals exhibited higher concentrations in WWTP effluents than in the influents, resulting in negative removal efficiencies: warfarin at −9.5%, indomethacin at −53%, trimethoprim at −54% and metronidazole at −110%. These comprehensive findings contribute valuable insights to the pharmaceutical landscape of wastewater from healthcare facilities and the varied removal efficiencies of Czech WWTPs, which together with the already published literature, gives a more complete picture of the burden on the aquatic environment. The effect of wastewater treatment plants in Pushchino, Russia, on abundance of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and determinants of multiple drug resistance in the Oka River water and sediments was investigated. Treated wastewater was found to contribute to contamination of the Oka surface water layer with aminoglycoside-resistant strains. The role of Pushchino waste treatment plants in the dissemination of multidrug-resistant strains and plasmids of the A/C incompatibility groups (IncA/C) was demonstrated. Wolffia globosa is a small free-floating aquatic plant native to the Southeast Asia and invasive in Europe. Between the years 2017 and 2022 it has been found in Czechia for the first time in this country in wetland habitats at seven sites. Occurrences of alien W. globosa were first recorded in the Central Bohemia region inside the Site of Community Importance Libické luhy, then by two sewage treatment plants and one adjacent fishpond in South Bohemia and in the Elbe River near the cities of Přelouč, Lysá and Labem, Obříství and Hřensko. Endocrine disruption compounds can be found in various daily products, like pesticides, along with cosmetic and pharmaceutical commodities. Moreover, occurrence of EDCs in the wastewater alarms the urgency for their removal before discharge owing to the harmful effect for the environment and human health. Compared to implementation of physical and chemical strategies, cultivation of photosynthetic microorganisms has been acknowledged for their high efficiency and eco-friendly process in EDCs removal along with accumulation of valuable byproducts. During the process, photosynthetic microorganisms remove EDCs via photodegradation, bio-adsorption, -accumulation, and -degradation. Regarding their high tolerance in extreme environment, photosynthetic microorganisms have high feasibility for implementation in wastewater treatment plant. However, several considerations are critical for their scaling up process. This review discussed the potency of EDCs removal by photosynthetic microorganisms and focused on the efficiency, mechanism, challenge, along with the prospect. Details on the mechanism's pathway, accumulation of valuable byproducts, and recent progress in scaling up and application in real wastewater were also projected in this review. Sensitizers are used to prepare photosensitive materials for ink-printing and thermal-recording media. Typical sensitizers contain an aromatic ring and exhibit aryl hydrocarbon receptor-mediated activity. They can accumulate in aquatic biota, leading to the disruption of ecosystems. Effluent from paper recycling plants has been identified as a source of contamination, and the presence of sensitizers in toilet paper may represent a new source of contamination in aquatic environments. To examine possible sources of contamination by sensitizers, this study investigated the levels of sensitizers in recycled toilet paper. We also studied the prevalence of sensitizers in rivers receiving effluents from sewage treatment plants in Japan, from 2020 to 2022. We detected eight sensitizers and related compounds in both toilet paper and river water samples; their total concentrations ranged from 0.78 to 34 µg/g (mean: 12 µg/g) in toilet paper and 58–1167 µg/L (median: 77 µg/L) in water. In the water samples, sensitizers were partitioned between liquid and suspended solid phases, and in suspended solids, sensitizers accounted for an average of 42% of the total. Correlation analysis showed a high correlation between sensitizer composition in the water from a river receiving sewage treatment plant effluents and toilet paper. Since these compounds were also detected in the river water analyzed in this study, toilet paper should be considered a novel source of sensitizers contamination in sewage treatment systems. Microplastics have multidimensional traits, as compared to other emerging contaminants, presenting a concern to terrestrial, aquatic life and humans through inhalation or ingestion. Hazardous chemicals adsorbed on microplastics could potentially be transferred to the environment or consumed by living organisms. We review the transformation of plastic waste in the environment, the origin and transportation of microplastics, the regulatory measures for plastic and microplastic pollution, and the fate of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants. Plastic debris is building up in the environment despite legislative attempts by many countries. Accumulated plastic waste from a range of sources breaks down into smaller fragments and microplastics through chemical, physiochemical and biodegradation mechanisms. This review also discusses personal protective equipment in relation to COVID-19 as a source of microplastics. Millions of microplastics are discharged into the environment through effluents and biosolids. Daily microplastic emissions to the environment from effluent range about 0.46 million to 140 billion. Previous studies had only explored the existence of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants, with limited visualization of how microplastics interact with the various treatment technologies used in wastewater treatment plants. Increasing urbanization has put significant pressure on water and wastewater management. To reduce dependency on freshwater, treated sewage can be reutilized for various purposes such as irrigation, horticulture, washing, flushing, and so on. A wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is a unit that improves the polluted raw wastewater into an environmentally friendly water (usually called treated sewage) through various treatment steps and electromechanical equipment. Nanobubble (NB) technology in the wastewater treatment industry is one of the promising concepts that uses gas-infused NBs to treat the wastewater for reducing the energy consumption and improving the treated water quality. In the current work, the efficiency of NB technology has been studied by upgrading an existing WWTP with NB injection for improving the treated effluent quality. The NB unit has been installed at the filter feed tank to treat the incoming sewage. Improvement in the wastewater treatment plant performance has been identified by analyzing the commonly used water quality parameters, i.e., pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), NH3 , total phosphorus (TP), and fecal coliform at inlet and outlet of the WWTP. The results are then compared with the baseline WWTP working without NB, and it was observed that the physiochemical parameters were reduced to acceptable levels after treatment with NB infusion. In this study, concentrations of alkylphenolic (AP) compounds were measured and quantified in sediments, soil and aerosols collected in the vicinity of Cortiou Creek in the coastal area of Marseilles directly downstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The three isomers of the nonylphenols (NPs), i.e. NP1, NP2 and NP3, were detected in sediments throughout the plume with average concentrations at each station of 62.93 µg.kg−1, 28.09 µg.kg−1, and 117.58 µg.kg−1, respectively. The stations beyond the plume measured levels of 33.67 µg.kg−1, 11.11 µg.kg−1, and 23.89 µg.kg−1, respectively. These chemicals were also found principally in soil samples with average concentrations of each isomer distributed at 6 stations at amounts of 48.08 µg.kg−1, 19.49 µg.kg−1 and 339.13 µg.kg−1 exposed to the prevailing wind, while at stations protected from predominantly high winds, concentrations ranged from 5.8 µg.kg−1 to 41.41 µg.kg−1. The most wide-ranging measurement is for the occurrence of these APs in aerosol samples, which were detected at levels of 0.81 to 8.46 ng.m−1. In addition, 4 tert-OP and 4 n-OP were not detected in these samples. The most elevated isomers found in this study were NP1 (28.44%) and NP3 (57.54%) within the three different matrices. According to the predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs), these concentrations in the sediments exceeded the PNEC value, which indicates that they are likely to exert an adverse effect on benthic organisms. Geochemical and sedimentological analyses and C-14 dating of four cores from Erdek and Bandırma Bays were performed to evaluate the metal pollution, history and sources, and content in the southern Sea of Marmara (SoM) caused by industrial, agricultural and domestic activities during the sediment deposition. The selected elements' pollution (Al, Fe, Mn, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) data were evaluated using contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI). The sedimentary succession in all cores consists mainly of clay (9–96%), silt (1–78%) and sand (0.1–20%) with small amounts of gravel (0.1–7%). The results of CF and PLI reveal that the upper 20 cm core sediments in Erdek Bay were contaminated with Hg (0.07–1.1 mg/kg), Pb (4–72 mg/kg) and Zn (12–255 mg/kg) by both anthropogenic and lithogenic input via the Biga and Gönen streams. Furthermore, the upper 20 cm of MD72 and BK1 core sediments were moderately polluted with As, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn caused by the discharge of untreated industrial wastewater and domestic sewage from the surrounding area of Bandırma Bay. Moreover, lithogenic Pb-Zn was transported to Erdek Bay by Biga and Gönen streams from the Pb-Zn mineralized zones in the southern SoM drainage area. C-14 dating reveals that As, Hg, Pb and Zn contamination in the study area was started about 400–500 years before the present based on preliminary sedimentation rate estimates and has increased intensely in the last century.
