Some Archean and Phanerozoic gold deposits demonstrate a close spatial relationship with alkalic intrusions, although the genetic connotations of this association are contentious. Only a few of the alkalic intrusions in the Kurnalpi Terrane of the Archean Kalgoorlie–Kurnalpi Rift are associated with economic gold mineralisation (e.g. at Wallaby, Karari). The subvolcanic syenitic intrusions at the 2 Moz Karari–Whirling Dervish gold deposit are markedly different from most other alkalic rocks in the Kalgoorlie–Kurnalpi Rift. Although preserving pristine to slightly modified igneous textures, the syenitic intrusions are thoroughly altered by hypogene hydrothermal fluids, such that igneous minerals, comprising apatite micro-phenocrysts and relicts of Ba-rich K-feldspar, Ba-rich biotite, sodic amphibole and Cr-rich magnetite, total <5 modal %. Elevated SO3 (up to 1 wt%) in igneous apatite shows that the alkalic magmas were S-bearing and oxidised, and a high oxidation state carried through to the hydrothermal stages that followed, including potassic (biotite) alteration, at 650 °C (apatite–biotite geothermometry). Oxidised hydrothermal activity was interrupted by periods of sodic and sodic–calcic alteration in structurally controlled zones, interpreted to record the influx of reduced, external fluids at around 400–450 °C. A second, volumetrically minor stage of potassic (K-feldspar–pyrite–hematite) alteration in the intrusions is nevertheless significant, as it matches the proximal alteration assemblage in volcaniclastic country rock-hosted gold lodes. Overall, the hydrothermal system in the intrusions evolved from pervasive, high-temperature to more focussed, structurally controlled, mesothermal alteration. The source of the high-temperature, oxidised, alkaline hydrothermal fluid is considered to be the oxidised, alkalic magma itself, including an alkalic magma chamber underlying the gold deposits. Based on evidence from Karari–Whirling Dervish, gold fertility indicators for alkalic intrusions include: (i) widespread high-temperature alkaline metasomatism, including coarsening of alkali-feldspar intergrowths, abundant hydrothermal magnesian biotite and advanced to total replacement of igneous minerals; (ii) low SiO2 and high K2O, relative to unmineralised alkalic rocks in the region; (iii) alteration of igneous titanite to hydrothermal rutile with concomitant depletion of Nb; (iv) low rare earth element/P owing to depletion of rare earth element in apatite by the potassic (biotite) alteration fluid; and (v) high V/Th relative to regional alkalic rocks. The Karari syenitic intrusions are characterised by almost complete replacement of igneous minerals by >400 °C metasomatic products, despite good textural preservation. Apatite composition indicates high-fO2 S-bearing magma. Intrusion mineralogy and textural relationships suggest a hydrothermal evolution similar to that in the gold mineralised volcaniclastic sedimentary country rocks. The alkalic magma is a potential source of the gold ore fluid, and the syenitic intrusions retain several mineralogical and chemical characteristics that probably indicate magma fertility. The paper presents new data on a comparative analysis of sedimentary rocks from the Mendeleev Rise (Shamshura Seamount), presumably, of the Triassic age with the Aptian sandstones obtained by the underwater sampling of the Alpha–Mendeleev Rise during expeditions in 2012, 2014, and 2016. The geochemical characteristics of rocks are very similar, and the data from different-age samples form common fields on various diagrams. Petrographic studies revealed that the sandstones of presumably Late Triassic age, as well as the sandstones of Chukotka and Wrangel Island, are dominated by fragments of shale and felsic effusives. The Aptian samples are dominated by mafic rock fragments. In addition, sharp differences are observed in the age spectra of detrital zircon populations, indicating fundamentally different provenances for the Triassic and Cretaceous sandstones on the Alpha–Mendeleev Rise. Samples from the Shamshura Seamount are characterized by populations similar to those from Triassic rocks of Chukotka and Wrangel Island, suggesting the presence of Triassic rocks in this part of the Mendeleev Rise. The late Archean Western Dharwar Craton supergroup has volcanic and sedimentary rocks deposited during 2900–2600 Ma underlain by the Sargur Group basement of 3.36–3.2 Ga granitic gneiss and older supracrustal rocks. The western part of the craton, known as the western province (Dharwar Foreland), comprises four major schist belts (Western Ghats-Bababudhan-Shimoga-Chitradurga). A regional gravity and magnetic (Total Field) survey was done in the Shimoga region. The geophysical data of the study area reveal the subsurface extension and behaviour of the exposed rocks of the area. The Euler deconvolution was used to define the depth of the anomaly sources. Euler depth solution for the spherical body (structural index 2), window size = 10, and depth tolerance = 5% depicts the depth of the various sources. The Euler depth solutions cluster over the hook-shaped schist rock of the Medur group (at the northern part of the area) reveals that the body's depth varies from 1 to 4 km in the central part, and at the northern flank, it goes up to 7 km. The solution also brought out the depth of the anomalous body near Hithala, within 4 km. The 2D forward depth modelling of the anomalous zone brings out the involvement of the tectonic forces in the generation of this anomalous body. The more precise depth from the model has been estimated between 2 and 3 km. The model clearly shows the relationship between schist rocks and the basement. However, the high-gravity anomaly has been modelled as the manganese bearing horizon, which has come to optimum depth because of folding and faulting in the region, thus providing a favourable zone for manganese deposition. We use the stylolite roughness inversion technique (SRIT) to decipher the principal vertical stress and corresponding burial depth of the Narji Limestone, Cuddapah Basin, India. The method is applied to bedding parallel stylolites (BPS), which are present in carbonate rocks and originated due to pressure dissolution along the contact points between layers and are caused by compaction and deformation of sedimentary rocks. In this study, we analyse the surface roughness of a set of 25 stylolites that run parallel to the sedimentary bedding. The study area is replete with Class 2 (seismogram pinning type) and Class 3 (suture and sharp peak) types of BPS, of which Class 3 is more appropriate for determining the burial depth, which is the dominant type. The results confirm that there are two self-affine scaling regimes in the stylolite morphology, with cross-over lengths (Lc) varying from 0.32 to 0.95. The calculated vertical stress varies from 19.0 to 43.6 MPa, estimating the range of burial depth of the Narji Limestone between 718 m and 1649 m, with a median of 923 ± 92 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hutchemys rememdium is a poorly understood softshell turtle (Trionychidae) from the mid Paleocene of the Williston Basin of North America previously known only from postcranial remains. A particularly rich collection of previously undescribed material from the Tiffanian 4 North American Land Mammal Age (NALMA) of North Dakota is here presented consisting of numerous shells that document new variation, some non-shell postcrania, and cranial remains, which are described based on 3D models extracted from micro-CT data. Although the observed shell variation weakens previously noted differences with the younger species Hutchemys arctochelys from the Clarkforkian NALMA, the two taxa are still recognized as distinct. Parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses reaffirm the previously challenged placement of Hutchemys rememdium within the clade Plastomenidae, mostly based on novel observations of cranial characters made possible by the new material and the micro-CT data. The new topology supports the notion that the well-ossified plastron of plastomenids originated twice in parallel near the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary, once in the Hutchemys lineage and once in the Gilmoremys/Plastomenus lineage. Hutchemys rememdium is notable for being the only documented species of trionychid in the mid Paleocene of the Williston Basin. The presence of multiple individuals in a carbonaceous claystone indicates this taxon lived in swamps and lakes and its expanded triturating surface suggests it had a durophagous diet. Pegmatite-type lithium (Li) deposits are an important source of the low-carbon energy metal, which is generally considered to be formed by the high degrees of differentiation of strongly peraluminous granitic magma. However, the question of whether the parental rocks of these peraluminous magmas are igneous or sedimentary has been widely debated. Recent studies have identified a worldclass pegmatite-type Li deposit belt (up to 2800 km long) closely associated with the Late Triassic granitoids and (meta)sedimentary rocks along the West Kunlun and Hoh Xil-Songpan-Ganze terranes in northern Tibet. This study presents a comprehensive petrological, geochronological, and geochemical study on the two types of Late Triassic granitoids in the Caolong-Xiangkariwa area of the Yushu region of central-eastern Hoh Xil-Songpan-Ganze terrane in northern Tibet: type A includes the Tongtianhe-Zhenqin-Zhaduo-Zhaya-Xiangkariwa (TZX) diorites and granodiorites (218-212 Ma), and type B includes the Caolong two-mica and muscovite granites (213-205 Ma), as well as ore-barren, beryl-bearing, and spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes (209-196 Ma). The TZX diorites and granodiorites contain variable amounts of amphibolite and biotite. They are metaluminous to slightly peraluminous with variable SiO2 (54.4-71.3 wt%), MgO (0.72-7.26 wt%) contents, and Mg# values (40-70). Some samples with low SiO2 (54.4-58.5 wt%) contents have geochemical features similar to high-Mg andesites: e.g., high MgO contents (5.24-7.26 wt%) and Mg# values (61-70). The TZX diorites and granodiorites exhibit less enriched (86Sr/87Sr)i (0.7080-0.7118) and εNd(t) (-4.8 to -8.0). By contrast, the Caolong two-mica and muscovite granites are characterized by the occurrence of abundant muscovite (plus tourmaline and garnet) and are strongly peraluminous. The Caolong granites and pegmatites are geochemically characterized by high SiO2 contents (68.8-79.8 wt%) and low MgO contents (0.01-0.10 wt%) and Mg# values (4-23). They have εNd(t) values (-8.8 to -11.4; granites: -8.8 to -10.8; pegmatites: -9.2 to -11.4) that are more enriched than the TZX diorites and granodiorites but similar to those of Songpan-Ganze (meta) sedimentary rocks (-7.4 to -12.9), and the Caolong two-mica granites have high zircon Î'18O values (11.6-12.1). In addition, decreasing K/Rb ratios correspond to increasing Cs contents in K-feldspar and muscovite from the Caolong granites and pegmatites. Taking into account the Late Triassic granitoids and (meta)sedimentary rocks in the Hoh Xil-Songpan-Ganze terrane, we suggest that the TZX diorites and granodiorites were most probably formed by the partial melting of metasomatized lithospheric mantle that subsequently underwent extensive fractional crystallization. Conversely, the Caolong two-mica and muscovite granites were likely generated purely by the partial melting of (meta)sedimentary rocks rather than via the evolution of dioritic-granodioritic magmas. In summary, there were two kinds of granitic magmas with different sources in the Caolong-Xiangkariwa area. Finally, the Caolong pegmatites were most likely formed by the extreme differentiation of two-mica granitic magmas rather than the dioritic-granodioritic magmas. Therefore, the evolution of magmas derived from (meta) sedimentary rocks were most likely to have formed the Li-rich pegmatites. At perhaps the coarsest scale of consideration, the rock cycle operates through fluxes associated with tectonic uplift and erosion, which are generally balanced by subsidence/subduction and the burial of mineral materials that leads to volumetric balance among the principal rock reservoirs. At Earth's surface, net rates of transfer are manifest as the reduction of areas of older rocks during erosional destruction as well as during burial by younger units. Because exposure of continental crust comprises some finite space, decrease of older rock area by erosion and/or burial must be largely balanced by an increase in area of new sedimentary and volcanic successions. Here, we examine relations between the lateral extents of rock units exposed across North America-their lithology, elevation, and the age of formation-to determine rates of geologic "repaving" that are recorded in the age and area of rocks making up the surface of the continent. Moreover, because deposition occurs at lower elevations, one might expect that subsequent episodes of uplift and/or burial would serve to increase the average elevation of currently exposed sedimentary lithosomes. Because plutonic and metamorphic rocks form at depth and are only exposed along orogenic belts and across shields after extended intervals of uplift and/or erosion, one might expect basement rocks to be initially exposed at higher elevations, and that subsequent erosion would decrease elevation with increasing age. Therefore, processes giving rise to associations between outcrop lithology, extent, and elevation may serve as measures of continentscale rates of rock cycling. We combine data from the 1 arc-minute global relief model with data from the Geological Society of America's 2005 Geologic Map of North America to assess the actuality and significance of first-order relations among the lithologies, areas, ages, and elevations of rock bodies now exposed across the North American continent and how these may shed light on deep-time rates of rock cycling. Areas of the 23,642 mapped North American lithosomes make up a lognormal frequency distribution (mode = 121 km²). This distribution reflects both natural (lateral extents of individual map units must be limited in space) and anthropogenic (cartographers must render map units within limited range of sizes) causes. Contiguous, lateral associations of the major rock types suggest that the spatial occurrence of volcanic and sedimentary rock bodies is largely independent of the proximity of other rock types, but exposures of plutonic and metamorphic lithosomes are intimately associated in space and thus comprise the "crystalline basement" exposed in cores of younger orogens and across the Canadian Shield. Unlike sedimentary and volcanic rocks that "attain their age" when formed at Earth's surface, plutonic and metamorphic units are "born" at depth and therefore must have reached some antiquity prior to first exposure. As a result, the ages of volcanic and sedimentary exposures span the full range of ages represented by all lithologies, while those of plutonic and metamorphic suites are more abbreviated and older. Median ages of North American volcanic, sedimentary, plutonic, and metamorphic exposures are 482 Ma, 306 Ma, 1695 Ma, and 2467 Ma, respectively. Although the areal extent of sedimentary rock decreases with increasing age, elevation increases. This change is interpreted as reflecting progressive tectonic uplift from initial accumulation at lower elevations. In contrast, the surfaces of exposed volcanic, plutonic, and metamorphic lithosomes become lower in elevation with increasing age. This change reflects both the erosional lowering of lithosome surfaces as well as the progressive exhumation of larger areas of crystalline basement. Exposed rock area exhibits a power law decrease with increasing age. This change reflects the progressive destruction of older units and their burial by younger units. A simple "repaving" model in which 0.8% area is uplifted and eroded per million years is in good agreement with observed relations of map age versus area, the rate of which is equivalent to the resurfacing of the North American continent every 63 m.y. or -56 times over the past 3.5 Ga. The rate of decrease in map area of exposed rocks with increasing age evident in both geologic map data and repaving models is about three times the rate of decrease in total sediment volume as determined from stratigraphic data and repaving models. Many continental large igneous provinces coincide with climate perturbations and mass extinctions. When basaltic plumbing systems traverse carbon-rich sedimentary rocks, large volumes of greenhouse gases may be generated. We document how intrusive sills of the Mesozoic High Arctic Large Igneous Province affected surrounding finegrained, organic-rich siliciclastic rocks of the Sverdrup Basin in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Petrographic and X-ray diffraction data from samples located near sills show the presence of high-temperature metamorphic phases (diopside, andalusite, garnet, and cordierite). Raman thermometry on organic matter yields peak temperatures of 385-400 °C near sill contacts, tailing off to far-field temperatures of ≤230 °C. Samples located >20 m from sills show no systematic change in vitrinite reflectance and have a VRo eq% value of ~2.5%, which indicates a temperature of ~210 °C. The finite element thermal modeling tool SUTRAHEAT was applied to the 17-m-thick Hare Sill, emplaced at 3 km depth at 1105 °C. SUTRAHEAT results show that contact-proximal rocks attain temperatures of >700 °C for a brief period (~1 year). By 5 years, the Hare Sill is completely solidified (<730 °C), and the temperature anomaly collapses rapidly thereafter as the thermal pulse propagates outward. By 10 years, all rocks within 10 m of the Hare Sill are between 450 °C and 400 °C, rocks at 20 m from the contact attain 200 °C, yet far-field temperatures (>50 m) have barely changed. When multiple sills are emplaced between 4 km and 6 km depth, all rocks between sills reach ~250 °C after 100 years, showing that it is possible to raise regional-scale background temperatures by ~150 °C for the observed High Arctic Large Igneous Province sill density. Vitrinite reflectance data and pyrolysis results, together with SILLi thermal modeling, indicate that much of the hydrocarbongenerating potential was eliminated by High Arctic Large Igneous Province intrusions. The SILLi model yields ~20 tonnes/m² of organic equivalent CO2 (all carbon gas is reported as CO2) from the Hare Sill alone when emplaced into Murray Harbour Formation rocks with 5.7 wt% organic carbon, and ~226 tonnes/m² by emplacement of multiple sills throughout the 2-km-thick Blaa Mountain Group with 3 wt% organic carbon. On a basin scale, this yields a total of ~2550 Gt CO2 from the Hare Sill, with ~13,000 Gt CO2 being generated by the multiple sill scenario, similar to estimates from other large igneous provinces. Much of the Blaa Mountain Group rocks now have organic carbon contents of <1 wt%, which is consistent with large volumes of carbon-species gas having been generated, likely a mixture of CO2, CH4, and other species. However, organic-rich Murray Harbour Formation rocks show no obvious reduction in organic carbon content toward the Hare Sill intrusive contacts, which suggests that not all of the carbon was lost from the sedimentary package hosting High Arctic Large Igneous Province magmas. We suggest that some of the gas generated by contact metamorphism failed to drain out for lack of high-permeability conduits, and then back-reacted to form calcite cements and pyrobitumen during cooling. Weathering, erosion, and sediment transport in modern landscapes may be investigated via direct observation of attributes such as elevation, relief, bedrock lithology, climate, drainage organization, watershed extent, and others. Studies of ancient landscape evolution lack this synoptic perspective, however, and instead must rely more heavily on downstream records of fluvial deposits. Provenance analysis based on detrital grain ages has greatly enhanced the utility of such records but has often focused broadly on regional to continental scales. This approach may overlook important details of localized watersheds, which could lead to significant misinterpretation of past sediment dispersal patterns. The present study, therefore, explores the impact of geographic and stratigraphic sampling density on detrital zircon provenance, based on a high-density investigation of U-Pb ages (N = 23, n = 4905) obtained from a narrow chronostratigraphic range (~2 m.y.) within a relatively small (~25,000 km²) area of an Eocene nonmarine sedimentary basin. Based on multidimensional scaling and DZmix modeling, these strata comprise seven distinct, approximately isochronous detrital zircon (DZ) chronofacies, defined as ". . . a group of sedimentary rocks that contains a specified suite of detrital zircon age populations" (Lawton et al., 2010). Four of these DZ chronofacies reflect long-distance transport from extrabasinal source areas. DZ chronofacies CO-1 and CO-2 are interpreted to derive from a primary sediment source in central Colorado (USA), corroborating previously proposed long-distance sediment transport via the Aspen paleoriver. DZ chronofacies ID-1 and ID-2 are interpreted to have been delivered to the basin from central Idaho by the Idaho paleoriver. In contrast, DZ chronofacies UT-1 and UT-2 are interpreted to reflect local drainage from the Uinta Uplift south of the basin, and DZ chronofacies WY-1 is interpreted to have been sourced from the Rawlins, Granite, and Sierra Madre uplifts to the north and east via the Toya Puki paleoriver. Lateral transitions between different DZ chronofacies in some cases occur over distances as little as 5 km, implying that depositional systems carrying sand from disparate watersheds directly competed to fill available basin accommodation. The results of this study reveal a high degree of complexity of Eocene rivers that converged on the Greater Green River Basin, indicating that their deposits contain a rich record of finescale landscape evolution across much of the Laramide foreland and Cordilleran orogen. These results illustrate the need for adequate sample density when assessing basin-scale provenance and offer a cautionary consideration for researchers using sandstone (and incorporated authigenic cement) in other nonmarine basins as the basis for paleoaltimetry or detrital thermochronology studies. Primary studies of the concentrations of rare elements in the sediments of two lakes on King George Island (Kitezh and Glubokoe) showed that their geochemistry reflects the geological features of the area. Compared to the composition of the upper part of the Earth's crust, the studied sediments are enriched in Cu, Cd, V, Tl, Mn, Ti, and P. Similar patterns have been identified in the geochemistry of volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Fildes Peninsula. Trends in REE changes generally follow their behavior in rocks, but the overall REE concentration in sediments of lakes is higher, which may be due to the presence of organic matter accumulating in sediments of water bodies. Unlike the aquatic environment, the chemical composition of sediments does not reflect the significant influence of the activities of polar stations. How and when sedimentary rocks record Earth's magnetic field is complex. Most studies assume a time‐progressive lock‐in mechanism during sediment deposition called depositional remanent magnetization (DRM). However, magnetic minerals can also form in situ, recording a chemical remanent magnetization (CRM) that is discontinuous in time. Disentangling the two mechanisms represents a major hurdle, and differences in their recording efficiencies remain unexplored. Here, our theoretical solutions demonstrate that CRM intensities exceed DRM by a factor of six when acquired in the same magnetic field. Novel experiments growing greigite (Fe3S4) in sediments and subsequent redeposition under identical magnetic field conditions confirm the predicted difference in recording efficiency. Thus, if left unrecognized, CRM leads to overestimated paleointensity and deserves more attention when interpreting Earth's magnetic history from sedimentary records. Recognition of fundamental differences between CRM and DRM characteristics provide a way forward to distinguish the recording mechanisms through routine laboratory protocols. Plain Language Summary: Remanent magnetizations preserved in sedimentary rocks serve as a continuous record of Earth's magnetic field history and play a fundamental role in understanding the Earth system. It is commonly assumed that magnetic minerals align with the magnetic field as a particle settles through the water column, known as a depositional remanent magnetization (DRM). However, diagenesis can lead to chemical growth of magnetic minerals, known as a chemical remanent magnetization (CRM). CRM lacks stratigraphic continuity and can obscure or completely overprint the original magnetization any time after sediment deposition, leading to a magnetic record that is uncorrelated with the age of the rock. Yet, CRMs go largely unrecognized. Theory and experiments in our paper document that CRMs record the magnetic field six times more efficiently than DRMs. Our work provides a way to distinguish the two through routine laboratory protocols. The late Paleoproterozoic was a key period in the evolution of Earth's surface environments and life. It is generally accepted that during the 2.43–2.06 Ga Great Oxidation Episode, the atmospheric oxygen level rose to an intermediate state (0.1% to 10% of the present atmospheric level) and the chemical composition of the oceans changed significantly. The paleontological record indicates that eukaryotes appeared during the late Paleoproterozoic. Nitrogen, an essential nutrient for life, is thought to have been one of the key factors in eukaryote evolution. However, nitrogen bioavailability and spatial heterogeneity in nitrogen cycle in the late Paleoproterozoic oceans remain controversial. Here, we examine carbon and nitrogen cycling in the late Paleoproterozoic ocean, via analysis of redox-sensitive element contents and organic carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of black shales of the ca. 1.9 Ga Nuvilic Formation of the Povungnituk Group, Cape Smith Belt, Canada. Two diamond drill-holes (DDHs) 718–3333 (∼50 m-long) and 4G8069 (∼90 m-long) investigated in this study contain turbiditic greywackes and black shales deposited on the northern margin of the Archean Superior craton below the storm wave-base. Sedimentary rocks of DDH 4G8069 might have been deposited closer to the continental source area, as indicated by sandstone abundance, than those of DDH 718–3333. Redox-sensitive element (V, U, and Mo) contents in black shales of DDH 4G8069 are low and show positive correlation with Al contents, whereas those of DDH 718–3333 are irregularly elevated. Fe/Al ratios of DDH 718–3333 are low, which likely reflect Fe loss from sediments under anoxic water-column conditions. Depositional environment is inferred to be above and below the redoxcline for DDHs 4G8069 and 718–3333, respectively. Organic carbon isotope values of DDH 718–3333 are approximately 1.7‰ lighter than those of DDH 4G8069, which might reflect methane cycling at the redoxcline. Nitrogen isotope values are positive (> +3‰) for all the black shale samples, corresponding to aerobic nitrogen cycling and presence of bioavailable nitrate on the northern margin of the Superior craton during the late Paleoproterozoic. Furthermore, nitrogen isotope values for DDH 718–3333 are approximately 2‰ heavier than those for DDH 4G8069. The observed isotopic heterogeneity is similar to that in modern oxygen-minimum zones and could represent intense denitrification at the redoxcline. Although no ca. 1.9 Ga microfossils reported to date are considered unambiguously eukaryotic, the aerobic nitrogen cycling inferred for the Nuvilic Formation, as well as for the previously studied Rove, Virginia, and Menihek formations, suggests that nitrogen limitation was unlikely to have inhibited biological evolution during the late Paleoproterozoic, a finding that is consistent with molecular clock studies suggesting that the emergence of eukaryotes occurred during the Paleoproterozoic. The existing micromechanical damage plasticity models assume that penny-shaped microcracks are present in the rocks, but it is seldom a reality. These models result in the abstract values of the damage variable. It is fundamentally due to the assumption of penny-shaped microcracks. To overcome this limitation, we have modified the micromechanical damage plasticity model such that the damage variable obtained from the proposed constitutive model relates to the measured damage from the recorded Acoustic Emission (AE) signals. This research presents a micromechanical coupled damage plasticity model by utilising AE data to predict the nonlinear mechanical response of intact rocks under Conventional Triaxial Compression (CTC) loading. The novelty of the proposed model is that it overcomes the limitation of penny-shaped microcracks and accounts for arbitrarily shaped microcracks by using a phenomenological approach. The applicability of the proposed model is shown by different rocks originating from varying geology. We have modelled the nonlinear mechanical behaviour of rock salt and coal (sedimentary rocks), tuff (soft igneous rock), and marble (hard metamorphic rock). The model performance is verified by comparing the results with the test data using the coefficient of determination (R2) statistical parameter. The proposed model predicts well the experimental data of damage variables with strain. It also successfully presents both strain hardening and softening behaviour of the rocks. The ability to accurately measure the static Young's modulus is crucial for understanding subsurface storage reservoirs. However, obtaining this data can be difficult and costly. Much previous research focused on the impact of one or two factors on geomechanical properties at a single scale, but a more comprehensive understanding is needed. A data-driven Bayesian approach was used to quantify the uncertainty of Young's modulus using cost-effective experimental measurements of six rock properties—porosity, clay content, permeability, the ratio of framework grain content to cement content (FGC/CC), mean grain size, and sample size. We further use the comprehensive geomechanical model to examine the impact of six rock properties on Young's modulus. We found that the pore abundance and the relative amount of framework grains and cements play significant and competing roles in rock's elastic properties. Furthermore, the surrogate model yields the minimum uncertainty and reflects nonlinear and non-monotonic trends between Young's modulus and secondary rock properties. The surrogate model can estimate Young's modulus distribution of common sedimentary rocks, reducing the cost associated with traditional laboratory testing. Overall, this work elucidates the elastic mechanical behavior of rocks at various core scales in response to other secondary rock properties in the deep subsurface. The Yermak Plateau (YP) north of Svalbard is a prominent bathymetric feature in the Eurasia Basin of the Arctic Ocean, forming the northwesternmost margin of the Eurasian plate. Seismic data indicate that the YP comprises continental basement; however, little is known about its geology. New petrographic, geochemical, Sr–Nd isotopic, and Ar–Ar geochronological data were obtained on rock fragments, which were previously recovered from basement highs of the northeastern and southwestern YP and are dominantly of magmatic origin. These new data combined with available literature data, and comparisons with volcanic and sedimentary rocks from onshore and offshore areas adjacent to the YP indicate that the northeastern YP and the southwestern YP are different regarding their geological evolution. The southwestern YP comprises an alkaline basaltic suite for which an Ar–Ar biotite age of 51 Ma was previously reported. The suite was formed in a continental extensional regime offshore northern Svalbard. Associated sedimentary rocks (sandstone, several limestones) show petrographic similarity with rocks of the Devonian Old Red Sandstone on Svalbard. From the northeastern YP, in contrast, we recovered mildly alkaline basaltic rocks with mid-Cretaceous Ar–Ar ages (102 ± 3 and 98 ± 3 Ma). The rocks show certain geochemical characteristics (partial enrichments of P, Ba, and Eu), which overlap with similar-aged Cretaceous basaltic rocks from northern Ellesmere Island of Canada and North Greenland. We suggest that the northeastern YP is a continental fragment derived from the North American plate, which was separated from the conjugate Morris Jesup Rise and juxtaposed to the geologically distinct southwestern YP by the propagation of the Gakkel Ridge spreading center since the early Oligocene. This paper presents the results of mineralogical, geochemical, isotope, and geochemical (Sm–Nd) studies of siltstones from the upper Bystraya subformation of the Argun continental massif, as well as U–Pb dating of detrital zircon grains from them. The main goal of the research was to identify the main sources of clastic material, to reconstruct the paleogeodynamic environment of accumulation, and to constrain the lower age limit for the formation of terrigenous rocks of the upper Bystraya subformation. The mineralogical composition of the studied rocks indicates their accumulation in an environment associated with subduction processes. The trace element composition of siltstones from the subformation suggests the presence of rocks of mixed composition in the source area in terms of their silica content. Based on Sm–Nd isotope and geochemical data, it was established that the main sources of clastic material for siltstones of the stratigraphic unit were Paleoproterozoic rocks and (or) younger rocks whose formation is associated with the reworking of the Paleoproterozoic continental crust. Most of the zircons from the studied siltstone sample of the upper Bystraya subformation are Neo- and Paleoproterozoic in age. Their sources are probably Neo- and Paleoproterozoic igneous rocks widespread within the Argun massif in China. The ages of the youngest zircons (556 ± 9 and 566 ± 10 Ma) isolated from siltstones of the upper Bystraya subformation were used to constrain the lower limit of their accumulation at the middle Ediacaran. We report laboratory experiments and numerical simulations demonstrating that the anisotropic characteristics of rocks play a major role in the elongation of hydraulic fractures (HFs) propagating in a plane perpendicular to the rocks' inherent layering (the bedding planes in sedimentary rocks and foliation planes in metamorphic rocks). Transverse anisotropy leads to larger HF extension in the parallel‐to‐layers/divider direction compared to the perpendicular‐to‐layers/arrester direction. This directly promotes vertical containment of HFs in most sedimentary basins worldwide even in the absence of any favorable in‐situ stress contrasts or other material heterogeneities. More importantly, the ratio of the energy dissipated in fluid viscous flow in the fracture to the energy dissipated in the creation of new surfaces is found to play a critical role on fracture elongation, with fracture‐energy dominated HFs being the most elongated while the viscous dominated ones remain more circular. These results open the door to a better engineering and control of HFs containment at depth in view of the competition between material anisotropy (both elastic stiffnesses and fracture toughness anisotropy) and injection parameters (fluid viscosity and rate of injection). Plain Language Summary: The widespread application of hydraulic fracturing for unconventional hydrocarbon production has prompted concerns about fractures extending vertically to sensitive rock layers, highlighting the need to understand fluid‐driven fracturing for informed public discourse and improved industrial practices. Through numerical simulations and laboratory experiments on an analog transversely isotropic metamorphic rock, we show that the intrinsic anisotropic characteristics of sedimentary rocks lead to limited hydraulic fracture (HF) height growth across the bedding planes in the most common geological situations in unconventional reservoirs. Furthermore, we quantify the roles of elastic stiffnesses, fracture toughness, as well as the fluid injection conditions in shaping HF in transversely isotropic rocks. The Seiland Igneous Province (SIP) is a large province of mafic and ultramafic (UM) complexes interpreted to be relics of a giant plumbing system feeding the Ediacaran Central Iapetus Magmatic Province. The Reinfjord Ultramafic Complex (RUC) is one of the four major ultramafic complexes of the SIP. The RUC has a younger dunite core surrounded by wehrlite and lherzolite embedded in country rocks consisting of layered gabbros with sub‐horizontal layering and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. Here, we develop a 3D subsurface model for the RUC using high‐resolution magnetic and gravity data and extensive petrophysical measurements from oriented surface samples and drill core samples. Our model indicates that the RUC narrows in depth, extending a minimum of 1.4 km below sea level, and plunges eastwards below the country rock. This model allows us to decipher the lithologic heterogeneities, and the depth and lateral extent of ultramafic rocks, which we interpret in the context of the geologic history of the area. The RUC is spatially separated from other UM complexes of the SIP and the result of this study indicates a smaller depth extent. Combining these findings with the previously reported distribution of the SIP rocks based on the regional gravity data, we propose that the uplift of the crustal block hosting the RUC is larger than for ultramafic complexes in the northwestern part of the SIP. We investigate one of the ultramafic complexes of a large magmatic province considered to represent a deep root zone where transient melts passed en route to upper crustal levels. The RUC is an ideal magma‐conduit system for research of large igneous provinces. Here, we construct a subsurface model of the ultramafic complex using gravity and geomagnetic field data constrained by petrophysical data sets from rock samples. We identified the different mafic and ultramafic units, and the alteration of rocks linked to later tectonic events. The localization and the estimation of relative volumes of altered and unaltered mafic and ultramafic rocks provide information about the geodynamic history and the ore potential of these rocks. Many methods have been developed to detect and predict the fracture properties of fractured rocks. The standard data sources for fracture evaluations are image logs and core samples. However, many wells do not have these data, especially for old wells. Furthermore, operating both methods can be costly, and, sometimes, the data gathered are of bad quality. Therefore, previous research attempted to evaluate fractures indirectly using the widely available conventional well-logs. Sedimentary rocks are widespread and have been studied in the literature. However, fractured reservoirs, like igneous and metamorphic rock bodies, may also be vital since they provide fluid migration pathways and can store some hydrocarbons. Hence, two fractured metamorphic rock bodies are studied in this study to evaluate any difference in fracture responses on well-log properties. Also, a quick and reliable prediction method is studied to predict fracture density (FD) in the case of the unavailability of image logs and core samples. Gene expression programming (GEP) was chosen for this study to predict FD, and ten conventional well-log data were used as input variables. The model produced by GEP was good, with R2 values at least above 0.84 for all studied wells, and the model was then applied to wells without image logs. Both selected metamorphic rocks showed similar results in which the significant parameters to predict FD were the spectral gamma ray, resistivity, and porosity logs. This study also proposed a validation method to ensure that the FD value predictions were consistent using discriminant function analysis. Lacustrine sedimentary formations potentially contain hydrocarbons. The lacustrine sedimentary rocks of the Ziliujung and Xintiangou Formations have been investigated for their hydrocarbon potential using low-pressure nitrogen adsorption (LP-N2A), low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), total organic carbon (TOC), rock-eval pyrolysis (Rock-Eval), gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results show that the normalized difference of the pore parameters between the two formations is less than 10%, and the pores are mainly slit-like mesopores with high porosity. Macropores and micropores are often developed in the quartz skeleton, while mesopores often occur among organic matter, clay minerals, carbonate minerals, and pyrite particles. The organic matter abundance of the Ziliujing Formation is relatively high. Additionally, the organic matter types of the two formations are mainly type II and type III, and the sources of the organic matter are plankton and bacteria which have reached the mature gas production stage. The palaeoenvironmental differences between the depositional periods of the two formations lie within 10% of each other. The warm and humid climate promotes the development of quartz minerals to further enhance the proportion of both micropores and macropores, and the clay minerals, carbonate minerals, and pyrite carried in the terrigenous detritus are closely associated with the total organic carbon (TOC), which promotes the development of mesopores to enhance the porosity. The reservoir, organic matter, and palaeoenvironmental characteristics of fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the two formations are similar, and both of them have good potential for development. The Eastern Taurides, which form the imbrication and nappe zone in the northernmost part of the Arabian platform, are located within the Southeastern Anatolian Orogenic Belt. In the present study, spectral enhancement methods such as band ratioing, minimum noise fraction (MNF), relative band depth (RBD), and supervised classification were applied to ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) images of metamorphic massifs, ophiolites, and sedimentary rocks outcropping in the western part of the Eastern Taurides (Göksun, Afşin, and Ekinözü regions). With these methods, the aim was to distinguish geological units from each other accurately. In the study area, arid climatic conditions with relatively poor vegetation, allowing for precise visual interpretations, play a significant role. Vegetation and water bodies were also masked before these procedures. In the Göksun, Afşin, and Ekinözü regions, metamorphic rocks of phyllite, schist, and gneiss types, which underwent metamorphism during the Upper Cretaceous and Eocene periods, are observed. The geologically dominant minerals in these rocks include silica, mica (muscovite, phengite, biotite), chlorite (clinochlore, chamosite), kaolinite, and carbonates (calcite, dolomite). These rocks are accompanied by ophiolitic, volcanic/volcano-sedimentary, and plutonic igneous rocks. Due to geological events during the closure of the Neotethys Ocean and continental collision in the area, it became evident that the lithological diversity from various rock groups was reflected in the ASTER images, in addition to field observations. Image processing analyses applied to the ASTER sensor images, rich in short-wave infrared (SWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) bands on the Terra platform, revealed distributions of clay, sulfate, carbonate, iron oxide, and silica minerals. The highest geological differentiation potential was observed through ASTER 643 (RGB) and ASTER 13,12,10 (RGB) false-color composites, as well as ASTER 456 (RGB) minimum noise fraction (MNF) analyses and, especially, relative band depth processes. Relative band depth processes were employed to identify epidote-chlorite-amphibole, calcite-chlorite-amphibole, alunite-kaolinitepyrophyllite, muscovite, and silica minerals. The application of these processes revealed lithologies that strongly feature these minerals. Specifically, the goal was to differentiate rock units containing kaolinite, muscovite, phengite, chlorite, and epidote minerals belonging to AlOH and FeOH groups and elucidate their compositions. Moreover, rocks containing primarily quartz and feldspar were distinguished using ASTER TIR bands. The obtained data revealed that mineralogical and corresponding lithological spatial distributions, as depicted by ASTER images, could play a crucial role in geological mapping, particularly in regions where mapping is challenging due to geographical conditions. Fluorite-dominated rocks are occasionally found in association with carbonatites, but their geologic and petrologic relations are rarely reported. The Dunkeldyk area of the Pamir mountains in south-eastern Tajikistan contains dikes of distinctive rocks composed of calcite, fluorite, celestine-barite, sulfides, apatite, with minor quartz, biotite, and REE fluorcarbonates. The dikes have sharp contacts with the host (meta-)sedimentary rocks and layering with ribbons, ranging from fluorite-bearing calcite carbonatites to fluoritites (rocks with >50% fluorite). The fluoritites are characterized by high Ca, F, Ba, Sr, REE, and S coupled with anomalously low O. The geologic relations and textures suggest a magmatic origin of the dikes from melts close to calcite–fluorite eutectic that experienced nucleation-controlled differentiation during the crystallization of dikes and the formation of fluoritite cumulates in larger intrusions. The Dunkeldyk dikes demonstrate that sizable geological bodies of fluorite-dominated rocks could form from carbonate–fluoride melts originating from the differentiation of alkaline silicate magmas. The nearly continuous volcanic eruption record at Mt. Etna dating back ~700 years provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the geochemical evolution of a highly active volcano. Of particular interest is elucidating the cause of selective enrichment in alkali elements (K and Rb) and 87Sr/86Sr observed in various episodes of past activity. More recently, this alkali enrichment trend started to manifest in the 17th century and accelerated after 1971, and was accompanied by an increase in the volume, frequency, and explosivity of eruptions. Explanations for this signature include recharge of alkali-enriched magmas and/or crustal contamination from the subvolcanic basement. This study quantitatively examines the role of crustal contamination in post-1971 Etnean magma compositions via hundreds of open-system phase equilibria and trace element calculations based upon whole-rock major oxides, trace elements, 87Sr/86Sr ratios, and mineral compositional data. Available pre-1971 petrochemical data are satisfactorily reproduced by fractional crystallization of a high whole-rock MgO (12–17 wt.%), Ni (135–285 ppm), and Cr (920–1330 ppm) parental magma composition that is documented in Etna's ~4-ka fall-stratified deposit. Observed post-1971 whole-rock and glass trends and phase equilibria are reproduced via modeled assimilation of a skarn and flysch mixture, lithologies that represent the uppermost 10 to 15 km of sedimentary rocks beneath Etna. Notably, models show that K2O (wt.%) and Rb (ppm) behave incompatibly during partial melting of skarn/flysch. Additionally, the observed elevation of 87Sr/86Sr in post-1971 samples is consistent with the addition of radiogenic Sr from wallrock partial melts. In best-fit models, which yield observed post-1971 K2O, Rb, and 87Sr/86Sr trends, ~17% anatectic melt is assimilated and there may be a subordinate stoped wallrock component of ≤2% (percentage is relative to the starting mass of pristine magma). Previous work has shown that metasomatized spinel lherzolite and garnet pyroxenite can be melted in different proportions to reproduce long- and short-term changes observed in Etna's geochemical products. We propose that the alkali enrichment signature observed after 1971 can be fully explained through the combination of mantle heterogeneity and crustal contamination. In particular, up to ~20% crustal input coupled with mantle heterogeneity of primitive melts explains the geochemical signals quite well. The influence of crustal contamination on post-1971 lavas is, in part, the result of frequent recharge of magmas that thermally primed the middle to upper crust and enhanced its partial melting. The organic-rich mudstones and dolostones of the Permian Fengcheng Formation (Fm.) are typically alkaline lacustrine source rocks, which are typified by impressively abundant β-carotane. Abundant bcarotane has been well acknowledged as an effective indicator of biological sources or depositional environments. However, the specific biological sources of β-carotane and the coupling control of biological sources and environmental factors on the enrichment of β-carotane in the Fengcheng Fm. remains obscure. Based on a comprehensive investigation of the bulk, molecular geochemistry, and organic petrology of sedimentary rocks and the biochemistry of phytoplankton in modern alkaline lakes, we proposed a new understanding of the biological precursors of β-carotane and elucidated the enrichment mechanism of β-carotane in the Fengcheng Fm. The results show that the biological precursors crucially control the enrichment of β-carotane in the Fengcheng Fm. The haloalkaliphilic cyanobacteria are the primary biological sources of β-carotane, which is suggested by a good positive correlation between the 2-methylhopane index, 7- + 8-methyl heptadecanes/Cmax, C29%, and β-carotane/Cmax in sedimentary rocks and the predominance of cyanobacteria with abundant β-carotene in modern alkaline lakes. The enrichment of β-carotane requires the reducing condition, and the paleoredox state that affects the enrichment of β-carotane appears to have a threshold. The paleoclimate conditions do not considerably impact the enrichment of β-carotane, but they have some influence on the water's paleosalinity by affecting evaporation and precipitation. While it does not directly affect the enrichment of β-carotane in the Fengcheng Fm., paleosalinity does have an impact on the cyanobacterial precursor supply and the preservation conditions. Erosion may modify the architecture of subsurface flow systems by removing confining units and changing topography to influence patterns of fluid circulation or by inducing gas exsolution from subsurface fluids, influencing compositional and buoyancy patterns in flow systems. Here, we examine the geologic record of subsurface flow in the sedimentary rocks of the Paradox Basin in the Colorado Plateau (southwestern USA), including the distribution and ages of Fe- and Mn-oxide deposits and bleached, former red-bed sandstones. We compare our results to those of previous geo- and thermochronology studies that documented as much as 2 km of erosional exhumation at ca. 3-4 Ma and Fe-and Mn-oxide precipitation at 3.6 Ma along fault zones in the region. We used (U-Th)/He and K-Ar dating to document two new records of subsurface flow of reduced fluids between 3 and 4 Ma. The first is precipitation of Mn-oxides along the Moab fault (Utah, USA) at 3.9 ± 0.2 Ma. The second is clay mineralization associated with laterally extensive bleaching in the Curtis Formation, which we dated using K-Ar illite age analysis to 3.60 ± 0.03 Ma. The coincidence of the timing of bleaching, Fe- and Mn-oxide formation in multiple locations, and erosional exhumation at 3-4 Ma raises the question of how surface erosion may have induced a phase of fluid flow in the subsurface. We suggest that recent erosion of the Colorado Plateau created steep topographic gradients that enhanced regional groundwater flow, whereby meteoric water circulation flushed reduced fluids toward discharge zones. The composition and geological evolution of pre-Cryogenian material in the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas have played an important role in studying the formation and evolution of early supercontinents on Earth. This paper systematically summarizes the characteristics of pre-Cryogenian sedimentation, paleontology, magmatism, and metamorphism in the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding areas. Based on existing data, the records of pre-Cryogenian sedimentation and paleontology are mainly concentrated in the Meso–Neoproterozoic, with relatively few records from the Paleoproterozoic or earlier. The oldest geological record is the Hadean detrital zircons in the metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the Himalaya and Qamdo areas (ca. 4.0 Ga). The Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas preserve records related to the formation and evolution of the Kenor supercraton, and the Columbia, Rodinia, and Gondwana supercontinents. Pre-Cryogenian basements can be divided into three types: Tarim-, Yangtze-, and Lhasa-type. The Tarim-type basement has a paleogeographic affinity with the northern margins of the Australian and Indian continents and lacks detrital zircon age peaks and magmatic-metamorphic records related to the Rodinia assembly (ca. 1.3–0.9 Ga). The Yangtze-type basement records volcanic activity related to global cooling in the latest pre-Cryogenian period and contains Meso–Neoproterozoic stromatolite and micropaleoflora fossils, as well as magmatic-metamorphic records related to Rodinia assembly (ca. 1.1–1.0 Ga). The Lhasa-type basement is characterized by Neoproterozoic rift-related sediment records (ca. 900 Ma) and high-pressure metamorphic events (ca. 650 Ma), with a prominent peak of detrital zircon ages of ca. 1.2–1.1 Ga. The Sheep Creek prospect is a stratabound Zn–Pb–Ag–Sn massive sulfide occurrence in the Bonnifield mining district, northern Alaska Range. The prospect is within a quartz–sericite–graphite–chlorite schist unit associated with Devonian carbonaceous and siliceous metasedimentary rocks. Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the district are hosted in felsic metavolcanic rocks (362 ± 2 Ma) associated with siliciclastic and carbonaceous sedimentary rocks that overlie the stratigraphic sequence hosting the Sheep Creek prospect. Felsic metaigneous rocks in underlying units are 372 ± 4 to 366 ± 4 Ma. Sheep Creek is atypical of the other sulfide deposits in the district in (1) having Sn grades up to 1.2%; (2) being contained in fine-grained, quartz-rich rocks and quartz–pebble conglomerate that likely originated as chert and chert-clast sediment, respectively; and (3) showing minimal evidence of volcanic components in the host rocks. Comparison of immobile trace-element proportions for graphitic and siliceous rocks from the Sheep Creek area with those for argillite associated with the Bonnifield VMS deposits indicates a continental volcanic-arc provenance for the former and a within-plate and passive margin provenance for the latter. In contrast to previously published interpretations, our data analysis supports a clastic-dominated (CD) rather than a VMS affinity for the Sheep Creek prospect. In our model, Zn–Pb–Ag–Sn mineralization formed by syngenetic or early diagenetic processes on or beneath the seafloor, possibly in the shallow-water environment of an outer continental shelf setting. This article employs a nonlinear creep constitutive model and explores the microscopic deformation features of hard tuff during the creep process, incorporating damage effects. Utilizing the particle flow program (PFC2D), a creep contact model is developed to simulate hard tuff under triaxial compression conditions. The study analyzes the creep mechanism of hard tuff under varying confining pressures, focusing on microscopic evolutions. Triaxial compression tests, conducted with confining pressures ranging from 10 to 30 MPa and axial pressures from 50 to 80% of peak strength, reveal significant influences of the confining pressure on the strength, deformation, and failure mode of hard rock. The results reveal that higher confining pressures enhance peak strength and peak strain, while the elastic modulus reduces continuously with increasing deviatoric stress, accompanied by pronounced attenuation creep features and cumulative deformation. The numerical results indicate that the mixed model accurately represents creep behavior in hard rocks. The meso-crack propagation pattern reveals that tensile fracture is the predominant mode of particle failure under triaxial compression. At low axial pressure, micro-crack propagation in attenuation creep and steady-state creep is limited, although internal damage accumulates continuously. As axial pressure increases, the rate of fracture formation rises, making creep failure more apparent. The numerical results align with the experimental data, with the mixing ratio of the mixed model effectively representing the creep characteristics of various rock types. Iron oxide–apatite (IOA or Kiruna-type) deposits typically consist of a magnetite-apatite-actinolite/diopside assemblage and are spatially associated with extensive Na-(Ca) alteration and brecciation. The origin of these deposits is highly controversial and has been ascribed to the separation of iron-oxide/sulfate-(carbonate) melts, magnetite emulsions, or metasomatic replacement by aqueous fluids from silicate magmas. Here, we propose a new model based on the findings from a cluster of IOA deposits located in the early Cretaceous Ningwu andesitic volcanic field, eastern China. In these deposits, magnetite coeval with apatite and actinolite occurs as coarse-grained veins, massive replacement, and fine-grained disseminations in the albitized, often brecciated, apical zones of diorite porphyry intrusions, the overlying andesites, and adjacent sedimentary rocks. The primary magnetite grains from ores with various textures contain similar and variable trace element compositions with up to 5 wt% Ti + V and show the characteristics of high-temperature hydrothermal magnetite in magmatic-hydrothermal systems. Diopside and garnet as well as magnetite contain fluid inclusions with multiple daughter minerals (vapor + halite + sylvite ± anhydrite ± iron chloride ± liquid ± hematite), which show extremely high salinities of more than ~ 90 wt% NaClequiv, homogenization temperatures of 745–846 °C, and Cl/Br mole ratios of 2000–6000. In combination with oxygen isotopes of the magnetite-apatite assemblage and the association with shallow-seated ore-hosting porphyry, available evidence suggests that these deposits formed from hydrosaline liquid exsolved from subvolcanic dioritic magmas with high Cl/H2O at magmatic temperatures (~ 800 °C). Decompression from lithostatic to hydrostatic condition and the interaction with country rocks explain the abundance of breccia bodies and widespread sodic alteration in IOA deposits. Although many studies link mineral deposit formation to rifting and hydrothermal processes, we present a study that focuses on the relationship between crustal necking and mineral deposit formation. Necking corresponds to the timing, location, and process of rift localization and abrupt crustal and lithospheric thinning. Although necking is well identified and described from present-day rifted margins and has been modeled numerically, little is known about the necking process and its possible link to ore deposit formation. We present observations from the Mont-Blanc fossil detachment system, one of the few exposed examples of a necking detachment fault. We show that fluids flowed along the fault zone and leached metals (mainly Pb and Zn). This process was associated with the hydrothermal breakdown of feldspar and biotite at temperatures of 200 °C and salinities ranging from 5 to 20 eq. wt% with a H2O-NaCl (-KCl) composition. The resulting metal-rich fluids reacted with mainly carbonate-rich units to form Pb-Zn ore deposits in basement and sedimentary cover rocks. A direct link can, therefore, be demonstrated between fluid and reaction-assisted breakdown of silicates, metal transfer and trapping along detachment faults, and the overlying sedimentary rocks during necking. Similar ore deposits can be found throughout the inner External Crystalline Massif of the Western Alps, interpreted as the former necking domain of the Alpine Tethys. This leads to the suggestion that necking and Pb-Zn deposit formation may be closely linked, a hypothesis, if correct, that has the potential to predict additional Pb-Zn-Ba-F resources in rifts, rifted margins, and reactivated fossil rifted margins forming collisional mountain belts. The continental crust of Iran is dominated by abundant calc-alkaline and alkaline plutonic and volcanic rocks and by rifted basins filled with mostly terrigenous sedimentary rocks that formed at a Late Ediacaran to Cambrian extensional convergent plate margin along the northern margin of Gondwana. Here we present new zircon U–Pb age, geochemical, and isotopic data from plutonic (granite-granodiorite) and metamorphic (gneiss) rocks in the Kariznou region of NE Iran to provide insights into the nature of the Cadomian convergent margin of Iran. Geochemical data indicate calc-alkaline signatures, characterized by strong depletions in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti and arc-like trace element patterns. New zircon U–Pb ages show that calc-alkaline granitoids and granitic gneiss formed at ~564 to 537 Ma and 538 Ma, respectively. Bulk rock Sr-Nd isotopic data of calc-alkaline rocks have εNd(t) = –5.42 to −5.53 and −6.93 to −7.43 for granite and gneiss, respectively. The gneisses show stronger interaction with and/or re-melting of older continental crust than do granitic rocks. We interpret Kariznou magmatic rocks as forming in association with strong extension accompanied by crustal assimilation. Extension initiated ~570 Ma with the deposition of Late Ediacaran sediments, and magmatism began at 545–535 Ma, generating calc-alkaline magmas. The tectonomagmatic evolution of the Kariznou region encapsulates the prolonged transition of Cadomian Iran from a strongly extensional convergent margin, possibly as a result of oblique oceanic subduction and slab roll-back of the subducting Proto-Tethys oceanic lithosphere, culminating in the formation of an Early Palaeozoic passive margin on the northern side of Gondwana. The western margin of SW Gondwana was a place of active convergence between the Gondwana shield and the oceanic lithosphere of the Panthalassa Ocean during most of the Paleozoic. However, several studies have indicated that especially to the north of latitude 22°S, the Devonian-early Carboniferous was a time of relative quiescence without magmatic activity, metamorphism, or deformation. This interval has been termed the "Devonian Problem." As the Devonian-Carboniferous is extensively well represented by over 4000-m-thick sedimentary sequences in the Tarija Basin in the Southern Bolivian Subandean Zone, provenance analyses--U-Pb isotope analysis on detrital zircon, Sr-Nd whole-rock isotope analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD)--were conducted on stratigraphically controlled sedimentary units to attempt to constrain the tectonic setting of the basin during that time. U-Pb on zircon provenance analysis indicates that only the Carboniferous units show input from comparatively young sources (<14%), with ages between 420 Ma and 320 Ma, which can be correlated with a Devonian magmatic arc. The dominant source areas for Devonian-Carboniferous sediment were the Sierras Pampeanas to the southwest and the Arequipa-Antofalla Massif and Famatinian Arc to the west, besides a few zircon grains (<18% of dates) that were possibly derived from pre-Andean inliers with ages typically >1800 Ma. The combined Sr-Nd isotope and XRD results for the pelites and the multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis indicate that the Carboniferous units most likely represent reworked material from older units, with a minor contribution from the western part of the basin. All currently available data lead us to propose that the Tarija Basin developed during the Devonian-Carboniferous in a foreland basin setting related to the convergent margin, with important glacial sedimentary input from the continent during the Carboniferous. The absence of a contribution from a concomitant magmatic arc for the Devonian units of the Tarija Basin and the scarce magmatic zircon input (<14%) into the Carboniferous units indicate a shift from flat-slab subduction during the Devonian to normal subduction during the Carboniferous following complete delamination of the flat slab. Our comparison of the detrital record for the Tarija Basin with that of the Paraná, Chaco-Paraná, Sauce Grande, Paganzo, Navidad Arizaro, Madre de Dios, and Karoo basins supports an active margin setting for the SW margin of Gondwana during this time interval. Antimony (Sb) is identified as a critical metal in many countries. The source of hydrothermal Sb-bearing deposits is currently debated in two opposing models (magmatic fluids or country rocks). Some Sb-bearing hydrothermal systems host abundant cadmium (Cd). Due to the close association of Cd and Sb in hydrothermal systems and the distinct Cd isotopic signatures between magmatic and sedimentary rocks, Cd isotopes have the potential to trace the metal origin in Sb-bearing deposits. Here, we conducted Cd isotope analyses of sulfide (jamesonite and sphalerite) collected from the Jianzhupo Zn-Sb deposit, SW China. A narrow range of δ114/110Cd relative to NIST SRM 3108 Cd standard was observed in sphalerites (-0.15‰ to +0.18‰; mean = 0.03‰ ± 0.10‰, one standard deviation [1SD]), identical to that of intermediate igneous rocks (-0.20‰ to +0.15‰); in contrast, pure jamesonites show a large range of δ114/110Cd (-0.42‰ to +0.17‰; mean = -0.22‰ ± 0.20‰, 1SD), differing from those of sphalerite. Different Cd isotope signatures between jamesonite and sphalerite are unlikely to have been triggered by sulfide precipitation, vapor-liquid phase separation, diffusion, and different Cd-S bond strengths. Instead, based on a comparison of δ114/110Cd and Zn/Cd ratio of sulfide and potential source rocks, we propose that a mixing of two ore-forming endmembers, derived from igneous and sedimentary rocks, may better explain the sulfide Cd isotopic signatures. This is supported by the well-defined positive correlation between δ114/110Cd and Zn/Cd ratio in sulfides. The Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in the Eastern Barents Sea Basin are up to 2 km thick and represent one of the least studied Arctic intervals. Here, for the first time, we present a detailed analysis of 43,000 km of 2D seismic profiles, as well as well-log and core data from 24 offshore wells with the aim to create a comprehensive sequence stratigraphic framework that can be integrated with the rest of the basin. Results show that (1) seven third-order sequences and five types of clinoforms can be identified based on integrated seismic and well data. The age of each sequence was established based on published biostratigraphic investigations along with new dinocyst interpretations included in this study; (2) the deep marine basin was gradually filled with sediments coming from north, east and south as a response to HALIP, Canada Basin opening and Cimmerian uplift of Novaya Zemlya, and was preserved only in the southwestern part of the Barents Sea Basin at the end of Early Cretaceous and (3) both Eastern Barents Sea and West Siberia Basin share similarities in sedimentary environments and tectonic setting, though the spatial distribution of clastic reservoirs in Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous mega-sequence heavily depends on the source areas that require more provenance focused research. A characteristic of the Pannonian Basin is its strong geothermal flow. Geothermal water is present in aquifers in the Miocene and Pliocene sediments of the Lendava, Murska Sobota, and Mura formations, as well as in pre-Neogene sedimentary rocks, at a depth of several 1000 s to several 100 s of meters. The water from the deep Miocene and Pliocene aquifers is mainly pumped for use in the spas of the region, which is separated by national borders. Pumping water from the aquifers lowers the hydraulic head of the water in the aquifers. The consequence of the drop in hydraulic head is a reduction in the yield of the aquifers, which has a negative impact on the neighboring wells. In order to prevent the effects of this influence—especially in the case of transboundary influences, as in our case—the construction of an additional well was proposed, through which the cooled water would be pumped back into the deep aquifer. For the specific case of the Terme Korovci project, which is located directly on the national border, a 3D structural model of the aquifer was created. The hydrogeological and thermal properties of the aquifer were determined on the basis of the lithological profile of the wells in the region, along with well logs and pumping tests. As detailed data on the thicknesses of the layers have not been available until now, we have envisaged several scenarios for different layer thicknesses. As will be evident from our data, in the case of a 10 m-thick layer, the temperature falls to below 70 °C in fewer than 6000 days, and this period extends with increasing thickness such that with a 200 m-thick layer, the period extends to well over 100,000 days. The Qinling Orogenic Belt (QOB), formed by the subduction and collision between the North China Block (NCB) and the South China Block (SCB), is a key area for exploring the tectonic process and timing of integration between the two blocks. A range of tectonic models have been proposed with regard to the subduction and collision of the QOB, but controversy in the timing and integration process still remain debatable, especially in the late Palaeozoic orogeny. The South Qinling Belt (SQB) is located between the Shangdan and Mianlue sutures, widely dispersed sediments outcropped in the SQB provide natural ground for the detrital zircon study, that could trace the sedimentary provenance and continental crustal evolution history, thus provide important evidence for the late Palaeozoic evolutionary processes in the QOB. In this study, we applied a detailed geochronological U‐Pb zircon dating of the Silurian, Devonian and Permian sedimentary rocks from the SQB. The result of the U‐Pb isotopic data shows distinct age populations at 439–474 Ma of the Silurian samples, ca. 400–490 Ma of the Devonian samples and 260–310 Ma of the Permian samples, respectively. By comparing the regional geochronological data, we sum up that the Silurian detrital zircons are mainly derived from the SQB and the northern margin of SCB (N‐SCB), the Devonian detrital zircon age populations are dominated by the North Qinling Belt (NQB) and SQB and the Permian sediments mainly stemmed from the southern margin of the North China Block (S‐NCB) and the NQB. A mutual age population of the Devonian sediments at ca. 400–490 Ma from the NQB constrains the closure of the Shangdan Ocean between the NCB and the SCB before the middle Devonian times. Ca. 260 ~ 380 Ma age population of the Permian sediments show similarities with the age data from the northern margin of the NCB, indicating an uplift event of NQB before the late Permian, and further constrains the closure of Mianlue ocean later than Permian times. Extraterrestrial chrome spinel and chromite extracted from the sedimentary rock record are relicts from coarse micrometeorites and rarely meteorites. They are studied to reconstruct the paleoflux of meteorites to the Earth and the collisional history of the asteroid belt. Minor element concentrations of Ti and V, and oxygen isotopic compositions of these relict minerals were used to classify the meteorite type they stem from, and thus to determine the relative meteorite group abundances through time. While coarse sediment‐dispersed extraterrestrial chrome‐spinel (SEC) grains from ordinary chondrites dominate through the studied time windows in the Phanerozoic, there are exceptions: We have shown that ~467 Ma ago, 1 Ma before the breakup of the L chondrite parent body (LCPB), more than half of the largest (>63 μm diameter) grains were achondritic and originated from differentiated asteroids in contrast to ordinary chondrites which dominated the meteorite flux throughout most of the past 500 Ma. Here, we present a new data set of oxygen isotopic compositions and elemental compositions of 136 grains of a smaller size fraction (32–63 μm) in ~467 Ma old pre‐LCPB limestone from the Lynna River section in western Russia, that was previously studied by elemental analysis. Our study constitutes the most comprehensive oxygen isotopic data set of sediment‐dispersed extraterrestrial chrome spinel to date. We also introduce a Raman spectroscopy‐based method to identify SEC grains and distinguish them from terrestrial chrome spinel with ~97% reliability. We calibrated the Raman method with the established approach using titanium and vanadium concentrations and oxygen isotopic compositions. We find that ordinary chondrites are approximately three times more abundant in the 32–63 μm fraction than achondrites. While abundances of achondrites compared to ordinary chondrites are lower in the 32–63 μm size fraction than in the >63 μm one, achondrites are approximately three times more abundant in the 32–62 μm fraction than they are in the present flux. We find that the sources of SEC grains vary for different grain sizes, mainly as a result of parent body thermal metamorphism. We conclude that the meteorite flux composition ~467 Ma ago ~1 Ma before the breakup of the LCPB was fundamentally different from today and from other time windows studied in the Phanerozoic, but that in contrast to the large size fraction ordinary chondrites dominated the flux in the small size fraction. Lead isotope values for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits provide important insights into metal sources and the nature of pre-accretionary tectonostratigraphic terranes and underlying basements. Deposits of this type in New England formed in diverse tectonic settings including volcanic arcs and backarcs, a supra–subduction zone arc, a rifted forearc foreland basin, and a rifted continental margin. Following VMS mineralization on or near the seafloor, components of the tectonostratigraphic assemblages—volcanic ± sedimentary rocks, coeval intrusions, sulfide deposits, and underlying basements—were diachronously accreted to the Laurentian margin during the Paleozoic. Lead isotope data for galena show relatively large ranges for 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb. Evaluation of potential lead sources, using for comparison Pb-isotope data from modern and ancient settings, suggests that principal sources include the mantle, volcanic ± sedimentary rocks, and deeper basement rocks. Integration of the Pb-isotope values with published data such as Nd isotopes for the volcanic rocks and from deep seismic reflection profiles points to the involvement of several basements, including those of Grenvillian, Ganderian, Avalonian, and West African (and (or) Amazonian) affinity. Clustering of Pb-isotope data for VMS deposits within individual Cambrian and Ordovician volcanic and volcanosedimentary settings, delineated by differences in 206Pb/204Pb and µ (238U/204Pb) values, are consistent with lead derivation from at least four and possibly five different tectonostratigraphic assemblages with isotopically distinct basements. Collectively, our Pb-isotope data for New England VMS deposits provide a novel window into the nature of subarc basement rocks during pre-accretionary sulfide mineralization outboard of Laurentia during early Paleozoic time. Uranium isotopes in ancient sedimentary rocks have emerged as a powerful proxy for the oxygenation history of Earth surface environments. Proper quantitative interpretation of δ238U data hinges, however, on an understanding of isotopic fractionation associated with uranium removal to sediments under different redox conditions. Whereas oxygenated environments are plentiful in the modern ocean, euxinic settings are scarce today, and persistently ferruginous settings are not a feature in the modern ocean, leaving lakes as our best analogs for iron-rich waters. These challenges to studying δ238U behavior under contemporaneous oxic, euxinic (sulfidic), and ferruginous (iron-rich) marine conditions limit our ability to apply the isotope proxy to ancient oceans. Here, we present δ238U data from five coeval cores through the Lower Mississippian Sunbury Shale of the semi-restricted Appalachian Basin (North America), which were deposited across a strong redox gradient from intermittently oxic conditions proximal to the Catskill Delta, to ferruginous conditions in the central basin axis and euxinic conditions along the basin-bounding Cumberland Sill. Overall, we find that both euxinic and ferruginous environments are capable of imparting high degrees of uranium isotope fractionation and that δ238U values covary more strongly with total organic carbon (TOC) and trace metal abundances than they do with the presence of euxinic versus ferruginous conditions. We suggest uranium sorption or incorporation into sinking organic matter in the water column as a mechanism for generating positive covariation between δ238U and TOC, particularly at lower TOC concentrations. We also compare our δ238U data to broadly coeval carbonates from Nevada, which can be used to estimate Early Mississippian seawater δ238U values. We find that Sunbury Shale cores deposited under stably anoxic conditions (both euxinic and ferruginous) and under consistently brackish salinities away from freshwater sources record an increasing δ238U trend through time that loosely mirrors the record for carbonates (and thus estimates for seawater) with an offset of ∼0.4‰ to 1.1‰, depending on the inferred offset between carbonate and seawater. In contrast, cores deposited close to the Catskill Delta and in a shallow oceanic-restricted basin transition across the Cumberland Sill record a decreasing δ238U trend through time, opposite the inferred seawater trend and suggestive of entirely local controls on δ238U values. Ultimately, these data suggest that highly productive environments with high rates of organic carbon loading can exert a strong control on the global δ238U mass balance regardless of whether euxinic or ferruginous conditions are present. Mesozoic forearc assemblages are widespread across Indonesia, and these are also exposed in the overthrust terranes on Timor. The oldest rocks in the allochthonous Mutis Complex, West Timor are Mesozoic basaltic volcaniclastic rocks and melange containing blocks of normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB) basalt (194 ± 5 Ma), amphibolite (metamorphism at 184 ± 6 Ma), garnet and actinolite-bearing schists, arkosic sandstone and volcanogenic sedimentary rocks. Based on the large component of Jurassic material, these rocks were probably derived from the Woyla terrane. The eastern part of the Miomaffo massif is complexly deformed with a dominant foliation overprinted by several fold and fault events including late normal cataclastic zones. This sequence is intruded by calc-alkaline andesitic dykes (possibly in the Eocene). The Central Sector of the massif is a block of high-strain greenschist facies rocks where the primary texture can no longer be recognised, but the bulk composition is the same as the volcaniclastic rocks in the east. Further west is an amphibolite facies metamorphic province. Amphibolite from the Western Sector have the same N-MORB composition as the basalt in the east, but the gneissic rocks have a higher proportion of arc-sourced protoliths. The peak metamorphic conditions were 650 °C and 0.9 GPa. This metamorphic event occurred at 37 Ma, reflecting subduction on the southeast margin of Sundaland, whereas the low-grade Mesozoic metamorphism of the Eastern Sector of the massif occurred in the accretionary prism along the Woyla Arc. The Mutis Complex at Miomaffo demonstrates the complex geological history of Mesozoic rocks in eastern Indonesia. The Miomaffo massif demonstrates the strong oceanic character of the Banda terrane. Solid deformation is always a crucial factor of gas transport in sedimentary rocks. While previous studies always adopt the assumption of isotropic poroelastic deformation, anisotropic poroelastoplastic deformation is rarely considered, despite anisotropy being a ubiquitous property of natural sedimentary rocks. In this work, an anisotropic poromechanical model is established to analyze the matrix porosity and apparent permeability evolutions during the process of gas migration. Using a thermodynamic formulation that treats the fluid–solid interface as an independent phase, we derive a rate form for matrix porosity and obtain the new dissipation function that contains three parts: dissipations from solid deformation, gas adsorption, and fluid flow. For gas adsorption, we justify the rationality of the adopted model; for fluid flow, the updated porosity can be substituted into sophisticated apparent permeability models for full‐scale analysis; and for solid deformation, a recently developed constitutive model appropriate for rocks exhibiting transverse isotropy in both the elastic and plastic responses is adopted in this work. Through the novel stress‐point simulation incorporating two effective stress measures and adsorption strain, new patterns of apparent permeability are obtained, which fit the experimental data quite well and cannot be reproduced from the assumption of isotropic poroelasticity. The advantages of our poromechanical model include thermodynamic consistency and the ability to employ finite‐element‐based formulation. Finally, an initial‐boundary value problem of gas production considering anisotropic plasticity is conducted, and the effects of the bedding plane and different adsorption models are highlighted. New data on the multiple sulfur isotope signature of Archean sulfides from country rocks and magmatic mineralization at the Moran deposit (Kambalda, Western Australia) were combined with previously published geochemical data to constrain the various stages of the dynamic evolution of this magmatic system, unveiling new insights into the transport mechanisms of sulfide liquids in komatiite magmas. Sulfides in the Archean magmatic and sedimentary host rocks of the komatiites display a unique mass-independent sulfur isotope signature (Δ33S), which records a photochemical reaction of sulfur in an oxygen-poor atmosphere prior to the Great Oxidation Event. Sedimentary rocks that are thought to be assimilated by komatiite show a distinctly positive Δ33S signature (+ 0.9 to + 2.4‰). Early ore sulfides situated above these sedimentary rocks contain relatively few valuable metals and display an overlapping Δ33S range (+ 0.6 to + 1.0‰). Subsequent but still early ore sulfides are situated above basalt, as the sedimentary rocks were thermo-mechanically eroded by the sulfide melt, displaying more mantle-like signatures (+ 0.2 to + 0.3‰) and valuable metal content - indistinguishable from the main ore deposit. This reflects a progressive dilution of the contaminant signature by the magmatic isotope signature of the komatiite liquid. Calculated volumes of the interaction of silicate melt and sulfide melt to explain the metal tenor of the ore and its Δ33S signature indicate a decoupling between chemical and isotopic signatures. This can be explained by upgrading the sulfide melt with valuable metals simultaneously with the dissolution of sulfur in the komatiite melt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Punta del Este Terrane, located in southeastern Brazil and eastern Uruguay, is a tectonostratigraphic terrane recognized in the Dom Feliciano Belt, the southern segment of Mantiqueira Province (Brasiliano Orogen). The northern sector of the terrane, called here by the Jaguarão Domain, is constituted by Arroio Telho, Arroio Grande, Matarazzo metamorphic complexes, and the Arroio Pedrado Gneisses. The first is composed of low to medium-grade metasedimentary rocks. Metasiliciclastic schists and marbles constitute the second, with serpentinites, magnesian schists, amphibolites, and metagabbros. The Matarazzo Complex comprises pure and siliceous dolomitic marble, metadolerite, and metagabbro. Arroio Pedrado unit comprises granodioritic to monzogranitic augen-gneisses. The rocks of the complexes were poly-deformed and intruded by high-K calc-alkaline peraluminous and metaluminous granitoids. The Pedro Osório, Arroio Grande, and Cerro Amaro dextral shear zones delimited the domain to the north. To the south and east, the units of the Jaguarão Domain were covered by coastal plain sediments. In gravimetric maps, the domain shows a high-density relief in contrast with the rocks of the granite belt (Pelotas Batholith). U-Pb zircon data from garnet-muscovite granites present crystallization ages of 587–568 Ma, which point to a widespread Ediacaran magmatism in the northern Punta del Este Terrane. U-Pb zircon provenance data of the metasedimentary sequences indicate main Meso- to Paleoproterozoic contribution, with subordinate Tonian to Cryogenian age populations. The geochronological results of the supracrustal rocks indicate a sedimentary deposition in an extensional setting, in which posterior deformation and metamorphism/magmatism compatible with a syn-orogenic setting in the context of the Dom Feliciano Belt framework. Rock abrasivity is an important parameter that influences tool design and wear, the efficiency of tools, and cost during rock excavation. Generally, the abrasiveness of rocks is measured with the Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI). In this research, several Cerchar abrasivity parameters such as penetration of stylus (Ps), the volume of material scratched in the groove (Vm), scratching force (SF), scratching energy (SE), and Cerchar scratching specific energy (CSSE) were determined using an Cerchar device. For evaluating Cerchar abrasivity parameters, 24 rock samples were used comprising igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. The new classification was presented based on the Cerchar abrasivity index and Cerchar abrasivity parameters. In this research, the specific energy of the Sievers J miniature drill test (SJ) was calculated for comparison with the specific energy of the Cerchar abrasivity test. Then, the relationship between Cerchar abrasivity parameters with SJ was investigated, new relationships between Cerchar abrasivity parameters and SJ with accurately acceptable presented. The results indicated that the Cerchar abrasion ratio (CAR) is a good parameter for measuring rock abrasivity and cutting. The SJ exhibited a good relation (R2 = 0.78) with CAR. In addition, CAR showed a good correlation (R2 = 0.97) with the specific energy of the rock cutting test (SEcut). More than 60% of the world's sedimentary rocks are mudrocks (Potter et al., 1980; Schieber, 1998; Potter, 2003; the term mudrock is favored here over mudstone because the latter term was used to characterize a limestone texture; Dunham, 1962). From a palaeontological perspective these are, compared to sandstones and limestones, heavily undersampled. The main reason for this is that mudrocks decay in surface exposures to small chips, which develop with sun/heat and rain into an awkward pulp. The decay of the mudstone concomitantly destroys all macrofossils which are not durable. This comprises fossils with an aragonitic or delicate calcitic shell unless they are preserved as pyritic or internal calcitic molds or preserved within calcareous concretions. Therefore, most of the fossils are not recorded in surface exposures. In addition, sedimentologic investigations of mudrocks are hampered because (i) compaction makes sedimentary structures hardly recognizableand (ii) good thin sections of mudrocks are exceedingly difficult to manufacture. For micropalaeontological investigations, mudrocks rich in organic material are especially difficult to process. Standard treatments with boiling water, sodium carbonate solution, or peroxide H2O2 generally fail to dissolve much of the sediment so that the fine fraction (and in mudrocks we usually need the 63μm-fraction) largely consists of clay particle aggregates. Yet there are methods to dissolve these aggregates. Otherwise, picking the microfossils would become extremely laborious. In this paper, some guidelines for successful palaeontological work in mudrocks are outlined. These are based on the author's personal experience.
