In 1792 foreigners flocked to France to participate in the new republican regime, redefining the nation as the conduct of popular sovereignty. A number of American, British, and Irish foreigners formed a club in Paris, the Society of the Friends of the Rights of Man (Société des Amis des Droits de l'Homme), among whom Irish republicans were a key component. Eager to "revolutionize" Britain and Ireland, they contributed to the rise in tensions and, ultimately, to the outbreak of war between France and Britain. The author argues that these Irish, because of their colonial experience, were a crucial factor in the redefinition of and opposition between British imperial and French republican models of nation and citizenship. This paper intends to analyze the evolutionary metaethical discussion that revolves around the evolutionist thesis about the origin of evaluative judgments and the possibility of there being objective moral values. Sharon Street (2006) presented what became known as the Darwinian dilemma for moral realism. Moral realists, represented by David Copp, did not take long to reply. The present article discusses the 'peace versus justice' dilemma in international criminal justice through the lenses of the respective legal (and political) theories of Judith Shklar and Hannah Arendt-two thinkers who have recently been described as theorists of international criminal law. The article claims that in interventions carried out by the International Criminal Court (ICC), there is an ever-present potentiality for the 'peace versus justice' dilemma to occur. Unfortunately, there is no abstract solution to this problem, insofar as ICC interventions will in some cases be conducive while in others, they will be deleterious to peace. If a tension between peace and justice arises in a particular case, the article asserts, the former must be prioritised over the latter. Such a prioritisation, however, requires a vision of the ICC as a flexible actor of world politics which is situated at the intersection of law, ethics and politics, rather than a strictly legalistic view of the court. Ultimately, then, the present article seeks to probe whether the legal and political theories of Shklar and Arendt-in isolation, but ultimately also in combination-support such a flexible vision of the ICC. The United States taxes both corporations and shareholders on corporate profits. In principle, the United States could rely on only one of these taxes, as many commentators have suggested. Although choosing to tax the corporation or its owners may seem like taking money from one pocket or the other, this Essay emphasizes a key difference: These taxes prompt different planning. Relying on one or the other mitigates some distortions and leaks, while exacerbating others. As a result, choosing which to impose is like navigating between Scylla and Charybdis. In response, this Essay recommends using both taxes for three reasons. First, if one tax is avoided, the other still raises some revenue. Second, if the goal is to deter a planning strategy, cutting the rate to zero is an overreaction. If the rate is low enough, paying a tax is cheaper than avoiding it, since tax planning is not free. Third, if one tax is cut instead of repealed, the other can be correspondingly lower. Even so, using two taxes poses challenges as well. First, although the taxes are supposed to backstop each other, they cannot do so when a planning strategy avoids both. Second, using two taxes is likely to increase administrative costs. Third, coordinating the taxes to produce the right combined rate--ideally the rate for noncorporate businesses-- is not easy. This Essay also canvasses reforms to shore up both taxes. While the focus is on incremental reform, this Essay's central recommendation extends to more ambitious reforms as well. These reforms also benefit from using two taxes, instead of one. This paper explores the view that, on Mumford’s account of the purist, to the degree that the purist adopts an aesthetic perspective, he or she doesn’t watchthe sportin question, and to the degree that he or she does watch the sport, there is a loss of aesthetic appreciation. The idea that spectators oscillate between partisanship and purism means that the purist is unable to avoid either the Scylla of not actually watchingthe sport, or the Charybdis of loss of aesthetic appreciation at any given point. Ultimately there seems to be both a sport-shaped hole and an aesthetic-shaped hole in Mumford’s account of the purist. It is argued that oscillation is incapable of dealing with the problem precisely because it is disjunctive in nature and entails the spectatoreitherwatching sport from an aesthetic perspectiveorfrom a partisan perspective at any given time. Ethnographers in Oceania and elsewhere often hear talk about ghosts and mythical little people who have great strength and magical qualities. Two analytical temptations are to dismiss talk about such figures as delusional or to see them as tokens of an expansively defined "hauntology". This article, however, attempts to bring together ghosts and little people in a more analytically productive way, asking how they serve as both figures in history and figures of history. The recent work of Joel Robbins on an "anthropology of the good" is drawn upon as a key resource. Robbins argues that anthropologists used to be committed to the principle that human diversity is extensive and profound, but that in the wake of critiques of the culture concept and ethnographic writing, many scholars have lost certainty that otherness matters. As a result, many anthropologists have sought out the "suffering subject", seeing trauma as a universal human experience that perhaps exceeds cultural contouring. In response, Robbins suggests a new focus on topics such as value, morality, time and hope, topics which-- while not denying the reality of trauma, nor discounting the ability of anthropologists to study trauma effectively--allow us to find new promise in difference. This article describes Fijian ghost stories and talk about veli, mythical little people, and offers an analysis of them as alternative perspectives on the morally marked relationship between past and present. Ghosts are a socially disconnected subclass of spirits that mark suffering and loss. Veli (and other autochthonous spiritual figures) are signs of indigenous strength that endures and can win out, even as their non-Christian associations make the promising power they offer also somewhat dangerous. Faced with numerous potential catastrophes-nuclear and bioterrorism, mega-viruses, climate change, and others-which should society attempt to avert? A policy to avert one catastrophe considered in isolation might be evaluated in cost-benefit terms. But because society faces multiple catastrophes, simple cost-benefit analysis fails: even if the benefit of averting each one exceeds the cost, we should not necessarily avert them all. The 21st century has predominantly added a new ingredient to the education and training of those who are attracted by sea adventures. The modern seafarer usually sails in ships with multicultural crews whose nationality mix may vary from season to season, one voyage to the next, depending on the policy of shipping/crewing companies. Under these circumstances, a language course demands that the learner should get as close as possible to the people that will populate the merchant ships, the way they feel, think and act. The paper presents the growing importance of building up the cross-cultural competency of our students. But reaching this goal depends on the G3 (industry, IMO-STCW, and academia) to make sure the right course is steered. The people responsible for this business should not ignore the new realities, it is better to change than to wait. Some corrections will have to be made regarding the requirements of crewing agencies, tailoring of the curriculum, and cross- cultural information to be presented in non-passive ways. 'Action and Reflection (I)' is the first of two studies. The present article focuses on action theory; the sequel will focus on reflection in relation to 'second-order agency'. Both aim to show the relevance of categories developed in Mouw & Griffioen (1992), Pluralisms and Horizons, in steering clear of the Scylla of 'methodological individualism', and the Charybdis of collectivism. The historical survey with which this article starts shows that methodological individualism casts its shadows far beyond Max Weber, its originator. Also, it becomes clear that this position is hard to overcome as 'communal agency', its opposite, proves to be fraught with internal problems. In the systematic part the author elaborates an alternative solution by shifting to the communities in which action takes place. The article reflects on the challenges of theological education in the 21st century and in Africa. Reputation, impact, success and funding have become the driving forces of the modern university. However, we are living in the 21st century and in Africa with a subsequent frame of reference that is holistic and faith-based. The article therefore argues for a multi- and transdisciplinary approach towards the nature of a university and recognition of the unique contribution theological education can contribute. Due to the inherently cooperative nature of theological scholarship, theological education could be able to avoid the extremes of the Scylla and the Charybdis, that is, fideism and secularisation, and therefore be able to survive at an academic institution. Both sectarianism and scientism should be avoided. Theological education in Africa needed to travel the same difficult road of theological faculties in Europe in the previous century. Although it is a commonplace among Joyceans that the "Aeolus" episode in Ulysses is concerned with classical rhetoric, the degree and manner of the concern has not been well understood. This essay addresses both, arguing first that, besides the often-mentioned attention to rhetorical figures, the episode as a whole mirrors formally--and thus parodies--classical treatises on rhetoric like Cicero's De Oratore and Plato's Phaedrus and, second, that, with "Scylla and Charybdis," "Aeolus" constitutes yet another entry in the ancient debate between the philosophers and the sophists. Unlike its classical forebears, however, Ulysses offers no easy answers to the problem of rhetoric, underscoring its dangers in "Aeolus" and its aesthetic potential in "Scylla and Charybdis." The article explores the history of Skylla in extant Greek art and analyzes why the figure of Skylla or Scylla carried funerary symbolism. It cites the Athenian black-figure lekythos found in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece, which was described by Semni Karouzou as Skylla or Hekate. However, it indicates that the identification of the figure as Skylla was rejected on the grounds that she has no real place in the underworld.

End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients exhibit an increased risk of bleeding compared with non-chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients due to uraemic platelet dysfunction, altered vessel architecture and other factors. This renders any long-term oral anticoagulation potentially difficult. While there is little doubt that ESRD patients with recurrent thromboembolism or a mechanical cardiac valve should receive vitamin K antagonists (coumarins), the use of coumarins in ESRD patients with atrial fibrillation is a matter of debate. In non-CKD patients, current guidelines strongly recommend the use of oral anticoagulants for stroke prophylaxis in atrial fibrillation if certain risk factors are present (CHA2DS2-VASc score). This recommendation is often extrapolated to patients with advanced CKD or ESRD but data supporting this practice are weak to absent. Besides an increased bleeding risk in ESRD patients, coumarins will also accelerate cardiovascular calcification and are potent risk factors for the development of calcific uraemic arteriolopathy (calciphylaxis). Novel coumarin alternatives such as direct thrombin inhibitors are promising but none is currently approved for use in ESRD patients. Whether interventional treatment strategies such as atrial appendage occlusion are safe and effective options in advanced CKD is also as yet unresolved. This review attempts to balance the potential risks and benefits of coumarin usage in ESRD patients and to give the best possible recommendations for everyday patient care. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Laboratory medicine is complex and contributes to the diagnosis, therapeutic monitoring and follow-up of acquired and inherited human disorders. The regular practice of physical exercise provides important benefits in heath and disease and sports medicine is thereby receiving growing focus from almost each and every clinical discipline, including laboratory medicine. Sport-laboratory medicine is a relatively innovative branch of laboratory science, which can provide valuable contributions to the diagnosis and follow-up of athletic injuries, and which is acquiring a growing clinical significance to support biomechanics and identify novel genomics and 'exercisenomics' patterns that can help identify specific athlete's tendency towards certain types of sport traumas and injuries. Laboratory medicine can also provide sport physicians and coaches with valuable clues about personal inclination towards a certain sport, health status, fitness and nutritional deficiencies of professional, elite and recreational athletes in order to enable a better and earlier prediction of sport injuries, overreaching and overtraining. In his opening address at a discussion of the book: V. V. Bychkov, N. B. Mankovskaya, and V. V. Ivanov, Trialogue: Living Aesthetics and the Contemporary Philosophy of Art (Moscow, 2012), held on 27 February 2012 at the S. Gerasimov All-Russia State University of Cinematography (VGIK), the author shows that Trialogue came into existence as a result of interpretation, polemical debate, and further development of ideas formulated in his early fundamental work. The Artistic Apocalypse of Culture (in 2 vols, Moscow, 2008). The key idea of both books is V. In this article, I propose a middle way between current process and substance theorizing as I argue that both ‘pure’ views are fraught with theoretical problems. I base my proposal on the ontologies of Aristotle and A.N. Whitehead, who both maintain that being and becoming are equally important for a comprehensive analysis of change processes. Drawing on their insights, I develop a conceptual frame that distinguishes between change and becoming, and proposes to use the pairs of potentiality-actuality and activity-relationality as notions that are less fraught with conceptual baggage and more relevant empirically than the distinction between substance and process. In this article, the author argues that the Hellenistic-sounding narrative of Scylla, a monster in Greek mythology that lived on one side of a narrow channel of water, opposite its counterpart Charybdis, had a Hellenistic origin, specifically in the lost works of Aeschrion and Hedyle. A fundamental clinical problem in treating patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is designing their diets: an excess of protein leads to the accumulation of uremic toxins, whereas a diet insufficient in protein could lead to loss of lean body mass. The benefits of dietary protein restriction include reducing the accumulation of metabolic waste products that can suppress appetite and stimulate muscle protein wasting. There also is a potential for slowing the loss of kidney function. Unfortunately, advanced CKD is strongly associated with a protein wasting syndrome that is directly correlated with morbidity and mortality. Fortunately, the mechanisms underlying negative responses to an excess of dietary protein, including the causes of the wasting syndrome, are beginning to be understood. We have examined how dietary protein influences the mechanisms causing protein wasting, and we propose a framework for approaching the variable dietary protein requirements in patients with CKD or end-stage kidney disease. The article focuses on the true character of Scylla and how Virgil's Eclogue 6 tends to describe her. In the last portion of Eclogue 6, accordingly, Virgil describes Scylla as the Homeric sea monster and is the daughter of Phorcys and Cratais. In another piece, however, Virgil points out that Scylla is the daughter of the Megarian king Nisus and has been known for her betrayal of her father. The author balances the conflict by asserting that the Homeric Scylla and the Megarian Scylla is one and same. The author explains that the betrayal act of Megarian Scylla has become the reason why she was transformed into Homeric monster.

In the post-Homeric tradition the sea-monster Scylla is characterized by a duality that manifests itself both in her physical hybridity and in more abstract ways relating to textuality and to fictionality. Ovid, developing features of the Virgilian Scylla, exploits the dualities of Scylla; the self-division of Scylla then lends itself to the purposes of post-classical authors, Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, who write to specific theological and allegorical agendas. Various suggested interpretations are given of the relationship between the naked woman and the monster in the picture. The article draws on literary and artistic representations of similar interactions for comparison. After comparing the drawing with other depictions of witches and monsters, the article seeks to determine whether or not the woman in the picture is meant to be a witch. Because of the presence of fish-like and ocean-themed attributes in the picture, it is argued that the woman is a sea nymph. Alternative identities for the woman are suggested, including the Greek sea monster Scylla, or the Roman goddess Venus.

The article provides information on infant social understanding. It explores on the researches concerning infant competence, perceptual preferences, and social interactional skills. It states that a full grasp of the development of infant social understanding will only occur if the changing patterns of social engagement is explored. The Scylla of nativism and the Charybdis of association which explain infant social interactions in the environment are also discussed. The key findings from the study of Moll and Tomasello on the assessment of the three conceptually distinct forms of infant social experience with the so-called "new" toy paradigm are also considered.

This article discusses the role for mechanistic conceptions of organisms in ancient Greek natural philosophy. According to the author, the mechanistic conceptions of organisms are those that draw on the ancient understanding of the field called mechanics, which investigate the natural world. It cites that the role of such conception is to show how goal-directed functions could reliably be realized by material interactions, without assuming the explanatory burden of attributing the origins of the composites. It was determined that the mechanics offered one way of invoking teleology without curving to the Charybdis of treating irreducible powers as efficient causes.

This article tries to tease out some strands in the current debate about intercultural aspects of human behavior. Shying away from the facile interpretation of the term as "that which can safely be transported to and from cultures," I postulate the basic autochthonic character of any culture: the intercultural is only possible on the basis of an intracultural reality. This has consequences for the way we handle theoretical issues, such as the comparability of speech acts across cultures, and for our practice, whenever we have to deal with problems that beset immigrants who try to keep their culture intact while mingling with another culture. The solution is sought in a golden middle between pious romanticism and bone-hard realism, an attitude that so far only has existed in the minds of theorists, but needs to get translated into practice to avoid intercultural clashes of the kind we've been witness to over the past decades. This article analyzes the colonial and postcolonial impulses at work in "Scylla and Charybdis." The author argues that Stephen Dedalus' often-ridiculed theory of Hamlet forms part of a coherent agenda which is grounded in intellectual resistance to the dominant academic modes of the English Academy. According to the author, Dedalus' criticism resembles a particular version of of biographical Shakespeare criticism present in the academic world of the first two decades of the century. Just as James Joyce incorporates a diverse world of discourses that critics have traced throughout Ulysses, many non-English critical discourses were contemporary English Shakespeare criticism. As a result, Dedalus analysis of Hamlet reveals, for the author, that Dedalus both recognizes and maintains a healthy distance from main currents of English-dominated culture and criticism, adopting a polemical Shakespeare criticism as a provocation to the forces of intellectual stasis both in Ireland and England.
