Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent globally and it is much more prevalent among adolescents because of their exposure to a variety of stressors. Research shows that emotional and biopsychosocial well-being changes over the course of their schooling, with a general increase in anxiety, highlighting the need to further investigate the risk factors that contribute to worry and anxiety symptoms among college student populations. In Mauritius, there has been a rise in the number of adolescents who are recipients of psychiatric treatments at the local government hospitals as well as an increase in the number of cases reported to the school authorities. The present study aimed to identify the causal factors of anxiety among adolescents, and its effects in the educational context. Further, the role of educational social workers in overcoming anxiety was explored and the aim was achieved using the exploratory approach. A focus group discussion using a semistructured questionnaire was conducted with ten (10) people including educational social workers and educational psychologists recruited through convenience sampling. A thematic analysis of the data shows academic anxiety as an emerging factor, followed by bullying and lastly, family issues. The findings revealed impacts at the school level such as students' inability to concentrate in class, non-participative and also showing emotional distress. While educational social workers provide counselling to students and parents, a need for teacher empowerment and peer counselling are proposed as future avenues.

The United States is experiencing a teacher shortage crisis that is even more pronounced in rural communities. Teachers may be driven away from the profession if they feel inadequately trained or under-supported to address students' mental health needs. As such, an important teacher retention strategy is to ensure schools have enough mental health professionals. The goal of this study was to explore three different yet complementary strategies to recruit and retain a robust rural school mental health workforce: a rural immersion program for graduate students enrolled in counseling and school psychology programs, a virtual professional development series for existing rural school mental health professionals, and a workforce hiring strategy. Each strategy showed promise: six out of seven students stated they were more inclined to work in a rural setting as a result of the immersion, self-efficacy and job satisfaction significantly increased for rural school mental health professionals participating in the virtual professional development, and important recruitment strategies were identified by rural school leaders. While there is reason for optimism when it comes to creating a robust rural school mental health workforce, funds are urgently needed to make these strategies available to rural communities across the country.

All interventions -- whether academic, behavioral, or social-emotional -- should be consistently delivered as planned to realize desired student outcomes. In other words, they should be delivered with fidelity. School psychologists can address this concern by monitoring fidelity and providing support for intervention implementation. In this final installment, the authors identify common reasons that interventions are not implemented with fidelity and share implementation supports that can be provided by school psychologists. Even after evidence-based universal intervention implementation supports, some teachers may benefit from more help. For teachers requiring additional support, practitioners can evaluate what type of support is needed (i.e., skill or performance deficit) and intensify support accordingly to ensure that teachers' unique needs are met, and students experience high-quality intervention delivery that is more likely to lead to improved outcomes.

Clinical reasoning is a complex process whereby psychologists review a large amount of data to generate diagnostic conclusions. Limited research has studied clinical reasoning specific to psychoeducational assessment. In this study, we used a think-aloud protocol to examine trainees' and licensed practitioners' clinical reasoning as they completed an unfolding case. Data were collected on efficiency (time spent on case, amount and order of diagnostic information requested), accuracy, and confidence, with the expectation that these areas would be more developed in experienced practitioners. Analyses found no effect of experience on clinical reasoning efficiency. However, trainees were less confident and accurate in their diagnostic conclusions and more likely to be influenced by contextual information that was less core to the diagnosis. These findings suggest that previous exposure to specific disorders is beneficial to clinical reasoning development and suggests a need for systemic training related to a broad range of disorders in graduate programs.

Despite research indicating evidence-based sexual health education results improved student outcomes, students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) do not typically receive sexual health education. While school psychologists possess skills that could contribute to sexual health education for students with I/DD, there is no existing research on this topic. To address this, we conducted a survey of school psychologists in a state in the Southeastern United States regarding their attitudes, perceptions of social norm and self-efficacy, and training and familiarity in regard to sexual health education for students with I/DD. The survey's focus and design were guided by the Reasoned Action Approach. Data collection and analyzes addressed (a) the underlying structure and internal consistency of our survey's scales; (b) school psychologists' level of training, knowledge, and beliefs about implementing sexual health education programs with students with I/DD; and (c) the relationship between school psychologists' previous training, knowledge, and beliefs and their implementation of and advocacy for sexual health education for students with I/DD. Descriptive statistics, principal component analyzes, and multiple regression were used to summarize the data and address the research questions. Data from the multiple regression analysis indicated that a significant amount of the variance in participants' implementation/advocacy scores was explained by attitude, social norms, behavioral control/self-efficacy, and training/familiarity. Our findings suggest that school psychologists' engagement in implementation of and advocacy for sexual health education for students with I/DD can be influenced by level of training and knowledge and perceived capability and behavioral control.

For applied psychologists, the goal is to promote positive outcomes among the individuals and groups they serve. Psychological practice takes place within a real-world context, including societal conditions that both harm and support children. Within school and counseling psychology, growing recognition of the impact of society on children has led to efforts to identify social justice as a key framework and set of strategies. Despite the obvious impact of public policy on the lives of children, there is very limited research on pathways and experiences of counseling and school psychologists who are involved in public policy efforts in their capacity as psychologists. This study addresses this gap, interviewing eighteen individuals across the United Kingdom and United States. Key findings include the importance of cultural responsiveness, professional development opportunities, and building and sustaining relationships. Several implications for future research and practice are provided, highlighting the need for multidisciplinary collaboration among those engaged in public policy and social justice efforts.

School-based mental health professionals consistently report that they are either not prepared to support grieving students, or do not have time to integrate crisis intervention support into their hectic schedule. Given that inadequate school mental health services can increase a bereaved student's risk of developing emotional problems, it is critical that school psychologists increase their comfort in grief. This study surveyed 75 school psychologists in the Northwestern United States regarding their training and experience in grief support. A reflexive thematic analysis identified four themes related to the challenges and recommendations in grief support: lack of training, limited role of the school psychologist, lack of formalized grief response system, and lack of school and community resources. Furthermore, only 3% of participants reported taking the lead in providing grief support and 64% provide grief support fewer than five times a year. The majority (81%) reported that they had zero courses devoted to grief support during their graduate degree, with more participants (67%) obtaining grief training postdegree. Study limitations, areas for further research, and implications for schools and school psychologists are also discussed.

To meet the diverse needs of school-aged children, school psychologists often must collaborate with other professionals within and outside the school setting. Despite potential benefits, challenges exist related to interprofessional collaboration, including ethical challenges. This article explores some of the most salient ethical dilemmas that school psychologists are likely to face when collaborating with other professionals. Specifically, ethical issues related to competence, multiple relationships, informed consent/assent, privacy/confidentiality, assessment, and therapy are examined. Using vignettes, recommendations for navigating common ethical issues that may arise when engaging in interprofessional collaboration are offered. Suggestions are contextualized within the ethical principles and standards outlined in the American Psychological Association's "Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct" (2017) and the National Association of School Psychologists Professional Standards (2020), which includes the Principles for Professional Ethics.

Project INTERprofessional Autism Collaborative Training (INTERACT) is an interprofessional education program designed to prepare graduate students in psychology, special education, and speech-language pathology to work with autistic children with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. The rising prevalence of autism, coupled with increased appreciation for interprofessional approaches to service delivery, indicates the need for university training programs to prepare graduate students to work interprofessionally with this population; yet descriptions of such programs and their effectiveness are not reported in the literature. In this article, we explain the process through which an interprofessional faculty team developed Project INTERACT, describe the sequence of coursework and team-based clinical experiences that comprise the program, and present preliminary data regarding its effectiveness. Twenty-four graduate students in psychology, special education, and speech-language pathology participated in this quantitative study. We report results from three rating scales that participants completed at program entry, midpoint, and program exit. Participants endorsed positive attitudes toward interprofessional practice and demonstrated high levels of knowledge about autism. Self-rated knowledge and abilities in interprofessional practice increased significantly by program exit. Project INTERACT scholars developed knowledge and skills related to understanding, assessing, and treating autistic children with intellectual disabilities, through the lens of team-based interprofessional collaboration. We discuss implications for practice with Project INTERACT.

Globally, approximately 400,000 youth are diagnosed with pediatric cancer each year. Treatment-related side effects, psychosocial challenges, and frequent school absences may adversely impact learning and the education experience among these youth. Efforts to enhance interagency collaboration between health care settings and community schools are imperative to facilitate school reintegration. The "Standards for the Psychosocial Care of Children with Cancer and Their Families" outline specific guidelines related to the continuity of education for students impacted by pediatric cancer. In particular, the "Academic Continuity and School Reentry Support" and "Monitoring and Assessment of Neuropsychological Outcomes" standards of care highlighted within this article align with extant programmatic efforts for transitioning hospitalized school-aged children back into community schools. This article aims to describe systematic programmatic efforts within hospital-based psychosocial programs that are consistent with the "Standards for the Psychosocial Care of Children with Cancer and Their Families," as well as interagency collaboration with community schools to support student-centered education for youth impacted by pediatric cancer. Resources for school psychologists, teachers, hospital-based programs, and others involved in student-centered education for pediatric cancer patients and survivors are presented.

School staff increasingly seek to implement evidence-based school mental health services to promote student mental health. However, barriers to accessing programming and support mean that implementing these programs is difficult. Popular strategies to address these challenges, like one time professional development, often fail to be effective or sustainable. This study used mixed methods to evaluate how a set of training activities--sequential online learning modules combined with interprofessional telementoring, following the extension for community healthcare outcomes (ECHO) model--influenced provision of school mental health services. School counselors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers (n = 46) participated in training activities, which included nine, cohort-based ECHO sessions and 12 modules. We used a concurrent mixed methods design in which quantitative (implementation data and pre-post surveys) and qualitative (posttraining focus groups with a subset of participants, n = 11) data were used to evaluate training. Quantitative results indicated statistically significant pre-post improvements in participants' clinical self-efficacy (d = 0.83) and knowledge of evidence-based practices (d = 0.37). Qualitative data corroborated quantitative results. Post training, focus groups described positive reactions, learning, and behavior change, particularly with respect to equitable service provision and interprofessional teaming. ECHO appeared to facilitate the application of evidence-based strategies to real-life practice and improved participants' understanding of effective coordination of services. Taken together, findings suggest that group-based telementoring may be a high-impact strategy for supporting the implementation of effective, culturally specific, and collaborative school mental health services.

Rates of depression in youth are continuing to increase at a steady rate, yet these youth often do not receive mental health services (Bertha & Balázs, 2013; Thomas et al., 2011). Schools are an ideal setting to connect youth to mental health services; however, many barriers exist with respect to schools having adequate resources and access to the appropriate levels of services (Duong et al., 2021; Owens & Peltier, 2002). Schools may collaborate with local community providers with available resources to address these gaps. The current article describes the pilot of a school-based mental health promotion program intended to reduce depression in youth by promoting access to care through referrals to community providers. Data were collected, via self-report measures, every 3 months for 12 months from students from three middle and high schools in North Texas. The students (N = 88) enrolled in this program experienced significant reductions in their depression symptoms at the end of 12 months. This program highlights the importance of school-community partnerships to promote access to care to address mental health concerns. The results from our pilot study demonstrate the feasibility and the potential of school-based programs in improving the mental health of youth in schools through community partnership.

Although care coordination (CC; i.e., the organization of care activities between professionals to facilitate appropriate service delivery; McDonald et al., 2007) has yet to be studied extensively within schools, preliminary research suggests coordinating school mental health supports can be beneficial (Francis et al., 2021) and that interprofessional and interagency collaboration is warranted to meet student needs (McClain et al., 2022). We examined the perceptions of school mental health providers (SMHPs) regarding importance, quality, and engagement with within-district transition CC practices within a multitiered system of support framework. Participants were 163 SMHPs who endorsed being involved in designing, providing, or implementing mental health services in a U.S. school district. The three scales used to measure engagement with CC practices were based on the "Care Coordination Measures Atlas" (McDonald et al., 2014) and were found to have promising preliminary psychometrics. Descriptive statistics indicated SMHPs endorsed CC as very important but perceived school and district personnel to view it as less important, reported their own quality of CC was slightly above that of their school and district, and regularly engaged in broad CC practices. Moreover, bivariate correlations indicated SMHP's personal views of CC importance were not associated with the quality of school and district CC, yet engagement in broad CC activities was associated with transition facilitation practices, and attitudes about CC were associated with engagement in broad CC activities. Implications of findings are discussed.

There is a need for increased collaboration between mental health providers who work with children and youth to increase continuity of care across settings. While schools can be an optimal location for mental health support, school psychologists often have to work with clinical providers given the increases in youth mental health needs and the shortage of school-based providers. This study used an online survey with a mixed-methods approach to understand the collaboration practices of school and clinical psychologists. A sample of 57 practitioners in the United States were asked to provide their perceptions of the roles of their interagency providers, their collaboration practices, and the benefits or barriers in the collaboration process. Findings indicated differences in providers' perceptions of the quality of assessments conducted and the importance of particular psychological practices to the roles of clinical and school psychologists. Content analysis of open-ended responses found that while providers acknowledge the benefits of collaboration there was distrust among providers. Implications for training programs and future research directions are discussed.

One of the most important, and neglected, aspects of the school assessment process is the feedback phase. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the extent to which feedback is being conducted, training in feedback, and the types of feedback practices used in school settings. One hundred thirty-two school assessment professionals were surveyed, and results suggest that most believe in the importance of test feedback and are utilizing it. Results of this study also indicate that test feedback practices are lacking with most practitioners simply plotting scores on a bell curve. Recommendations for more culturally responsive, meaningful, and ethical feedback practices are discussed, including how to incorporate therapeutic assessment values and techniques in school settings.

The legal landscape has significantly impeded LGBTQ+ youth's rights at home and in schools. Learn about introduced and passed laws, the impact experienced by LGBTQ+ students, and how school psychologists can preserve LGBTQ+ mental health in these challenging times.

The conducting of universal mental health screening is one widely endorsed practice suitable for use within P-12 school settings to more proactively identify children and young people experiencing or displaying characteristics of a mental health disorder. Absent routine screening, many school-age youth with mental health concerns, especially those of an internalizing nature, may go unidentified and left without timely treatment, support, and services. The current study, which employed survey methodology with principal respondents from four Midwestern states, primarily sought to contribute to and update the literature on the universal mental health screening practice habits of P-12 schools. Most principal respondents reported that their school does not currently conduct universal mental health screening and cited barriers (e.g., money, time, lack of support system in place) to screening commonly documented in prior studies. Many principals reported at least a moderate degree of interest in their school beginning to conduct universal screening in their buildings; however, a similar majority reported little to no knowledge about this important practice. Fortunately, principal respondents were generally interested in and receptive to support from their school psychologist in exploring and eventually implementing the conducting of universal mental health screening in their building. Implications for practice and future research, along with the potential for school psychologist leadership and role expansion, are discussed.

Students have dreams and goals outside of school. School psychologists can play a vital role in helping students with disabilities reach their dreams, particularly when the dreams ask the question "What do I want to do after high school?" Often, the answer lies in postsecondary goals, which require transition planning while the student is still in school. This paper explores how families, teachers, and school psychologists can all play supportive and distinct roles in helping a student with disabilities reach their postsecondary goals. There have been several transition models proposed to help students with disabilities shift from PK-12 to postsecondary settings; however, there are gaps in application for the most important team members: student, family, teacher, and school psychologist. Lastly, this paper proposes a new transition framework, "Creating a Roadmap: Providing Opportunities for Optimal Living" (CAR:POOL), that focuses specifically on the concrete steps a transition team needs to complete postsecondary goals.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen significantly in the past two decades. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of mental health providers who have specialized training in delivering evidenced-based services to this population. Early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) is an evidenced-based treatment recommended for toddlers with ASD, and school psychologists are uniquely positioned to help children with ASD receive it. However, many school psychologists do not receive adequate training in this subspecialty. This paper makes recommendations to school psychology training programs about how to add or improve training in this subspecialty based on the results of an Office of Special Education Programs grant-funded ASD training program which involved collaboration between a NASP-approved and APA-accredited school psychology training program and a community-based early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) clinic. The grant supported development of an interdisciplinary didactic and clinical training program to increase the ASD knowledge, skills, and competencies of school psychology graduate students, with the broader goals of developing a replicable training model and increasing the workforce of trained providers for this underserved population. Fifteen graduate students completed the training program. Outcomes related to trainee knowledge, skills, and competencies, trainee satisfaction, and lessons learned over time analyzed within a logic model that guided the project's development and execution can be informative for other school psychology programs undertaking training in this subspecialty.

This study explored school psychologists' practices in the areas of developing behavior intervention plans (BIPs), conducting functional behavior assessments (FBAs), and behavioral consultation. Practitioners were asked to rate their level of confidence in the implementation with fidelity of the last BIP they developed. Relationships between these practices and school psychologists' confidence levels were examined. Data were collected from a national sample of practitioners (n = 179). Overall, results suggest that school district supports, being mindful of potential barriers to implementation, certain components of the FBA process, and adhering to best practices in behavioral consultation can have substantial positive impacts on a school psychologist's confidence in the treatment integrity and maintenance of BIPs over time. Implications for practice are discussed.

Many psychologists working in schools acknowledge how their work contributes to the reproduction and mitigation of societal injustices. While professionals engaged in education systems and classrooms may hope to achieve the latter, disciplinary conventions can compete with best intentions. In response, psychologists working in schools have recently been encouraged to realize anti-oppressive schooling by practicing what is referred to as critical school psychology. Although potentially new for school psychology, critical work bridging education and psychology has been available for some time in North America and internationally. To encourage the use of psychology in support of justice and in resistance to oppression, we review some of this work and invite those interested to consider psychosocial justice as an ethical orientation to enmeshed theory~practice. The purposeful engagement of critically informed work from outside traditional divisional silos will not eradicate every problem facing schools today, but such action will, at the least, provide concerned practitioners options for collaborative knowledge-making and more preferred ways of working.

As marginalized graduate students and faculty, we have stories to tell about our experiences within school psychology. Many of these stories center our oppression, trauma, and exclusion but some of them also center our joy and resistance. The purpose of this collaborative autoethnographic project was to create a counterspace in which we, BIWOC faculty and graduate students, could come together to engage in storytelling and build community amongst one another as a way to survive and thrive in academia. As a result of the counterspace, we are able to provide critical feedback and recommendations for school psychology programs to better support marginalized students and faculty. And we also offer critical hope and knowledge to marginalized graduate students and faculty who are currently in the field.

This exploratory mixed methods study investigates the school psychology workforce shortage phenomenon and underlying contributing factors. The development of an Education Specialist school psychology program in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the authors to explore variables impacting awareness of the school psychology profession. State policies were reviewed to identify how many states have adopted the nationally recommended 1:500 ratio for school psychologists. Additionally, undergraduate and postbaccalaureate student knowledge of the work of school-based mental health professionals, specifically school psychologists, was surveyed. Finally, the authors explore the need for new action frameworks to achieve this awareness and to promote workforce policy development. Based on findings, three key points for practitioners are the need to promote the adoption of policies that align with the 1:500 recommended ratio for school psychologists, increase awareness of the profession with preservice and in-service educators, and create coordinated training pathways and career opportunities for individuals to become school psychologists.

School psychology has heavily relied on quantitative methodology to create and sustain our knowledge of best practices regarding academic, behavioral, and mental health outcomes for students. Nevertheless, underlying assumptions of the neutrality of quantitative data have obfuscated how school psychology research has perpetuated oppressive ideologies and practices, which directly harm students from marginalized identities. This paper demonstrates the need for employing a critical lens when engaging in and consuming school psychology research that utilizes quantitative methods. One such framework is QuantCrit, developed in the United Kingdom, which intentionally integrates Critical Race Theory tenets into the development, analysis, and interpretation of quantitative data. We explore specific examples of the insidious ways that 'presumed neutral' quantitative approaches have led to the perpetuation of oppressive practices in the following key areas of school psychology research: (a) discipline disproportionality, (b) special education disproportionality, and (c) school accountability metrics. Furthermore, we provide recommendations for both utilizing and publishing quantitative research that moves school psychologists towards more equitable practices for children and families across the globe.

The Positive Outcomes With Emotion Regulation (POWER) Program is a transdiagnostic intervention for adolescents at risk of developing emotional disorders. The POWER Program was designed to be implemented in secondary schools, by school personnel with or without specialized mental health training, as a Tier 2 intervention. In this pilot study, the POWER Program was implemented by school psychologists and school psychologists-in-training and evaluated across four focal student participants using a multiple-baseline-across-participants single-case design. Program efficacy was assessed using systematic direct classroom observations of student negative affect and social engagement as well as student and caregiver ratings of emotional and behavioral symptoms. Program usability was assessed through rating scales completed by intervention facilitators and student participants. Overall, results provide evidence of the POWER Program's small- to large-sized effects on students' emotional and behavioral functioning as observed in the classroom and self-reported by students. In addition, results suggest implementation facilitators' and students' positive impressions of the program, evident in ratings of high understanding, feasibility, and acceptability across groups. Study limitations are highlighted with attention to opportunities to further refine and evaluate the POWER Program.

The science of behavior began in the laboratory setting, focusing on the direct measurement of behavior-environment relations. The field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) is relatively new with the first publications in the flagship journal, The Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, appearing in 1968. Soon the application of the science was applied to the treatment of autism and, due to its tremendous success, the number of professionals claiming to use behavioral procedures increased exponentially. It became obvious that some sort of systemic oversight needed to be created to protect both consumers and practitioners, and difficult questions had to be raised concerning licensure, certification, which was more advantageous to pursue, and with what consequences. The purpose of this paper is to explore the historical roots of behavior analysis and provide commentary and context to the movement of certification up to the current day. Current challenges within the field of ABA will also be reviewed, along with recommendations to ensure that ABA-based intervention in the future is high in quality.

Cyberbullying is a form of violence that has been present in schools for a long time and negatively impacts the mental health of students. Different countries have different strategies for avoiding cyberbullying. However, research on school-based cyberbullying prevention is limited in Southeast Asian developing countries. This study aims to explore the current implementation of school-based cyberbullying prevention in public schools in a developing country. The framework of prevention programs is based on three aspects: (1) Developing curricula on how to behave when being a victim of cyberbullying. (2) Strengthening the students' skills to deal with cyberbullying. (3) Promulgating specific provisions in the legal document on handling cyberbullying. School-based cyberbullying prevention among students in public schools is currently a research gap because of the limitations in the management of students using the internet and educational policies. This is a cross-sectional study that surveyed 400 participants who are Vietnamese teachers, administrators and school psychologists. The results show that the limitations ofschool-based cyberbullying prevention for Vietnamese students include professional knowledge, practical experience and personnel in charge of this work. This constraint has resulted in an upsurge in incidents of cyberbullying in Vietnam. The findings add to the important evidence on cyberbullying prevention in a developing country that is working to research and develop an appropriate school-based cyberbullying prevention strategy.

Assessment and management of youth suicide risk is a key role for school psychologists. However, prior research indicates that psychologists commonly lack confidence and feel unprepared when they graduated to conduct risk assessments. This qualitative study explored nine Victorian early-career school psychologists' role in risk assessment, and their self-perceived preparedness, self-efficacy, postgraduate training experiences and methods used to assess risk. Results identified that the frequency of student suicidal ideation and acute mental health presentations exceeded participants' expectations. Participants identified confidence in assessing risk, but less confidence in the follow-up actions. Participants reported employing comprehensive risk assessment practices and most received exposure to risk assessment during training. Key factors identified for building risk assessment preparedness and confidence were supervision, experience, professional development and research. As participants identified core risk assessment competencies that may require further coverage in curricula, these findings have important implications for universities to maximise graduates' risk assessment preparedness.

There are few studies examining the wellbeing of Australian school-based psychologists/counsellors (SPCs) despite the research indicating there are unique stressors associated with the role. The purpose of this study was to measure the stress perceived by working Australian SPCs. Data were collected via an online survey within which the Perceived Stress Scale -- 10 item version (PSS-10) was embedded. Mean global stress for 162 participants was calculated then compared with the general population and a previous cohort of Australian SPCs. Four variables of influence were also statistically analysed: school level, years of experience, amount of time participating in supervision and alignment with two differing professional identity statements -- 'I see myself as an educator with a counselling/psychology specialisation' or 'as a psychologist/counsellor who works in an education setting'. Moderate-high frequency of stress, in excess of the general population and stress levels reported previously, was found. No significant relationships were found between stress and school level, years of experience or professional identity. A negative relationship was found between stress and the amount of supervision received. The level of stress experienced by Australian SPCs warrants that policies and practices monitor and protect Australian SPC wellbeing.

Prior research suggests mindfulness-based interventions effectively reduce stress in trainee psychologists, enhance wellbeing and cultivate clinical skills and competencies. This study explored how trainee school psychologists perceived the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention on their development as psychologists. Forty trainee school psychologists participated in a 6-week online mindfulness-based intervention. They completed weekly written reflective journals throughout the programme which were later analysed using thematic analysis. Four core themes were identified: (1) changes in awareness and attention; (2) enhanced wellbeing; (3) commitment to ongoing personal practice and (4) cultivation and enhancement of professional development. Participants (n = 24) who completed the mindfulness workshop during the COVID-19 pandemic indicated that mindfulness practice was particularly useful for managing uncertainty and other related stressors. It was concluded that practicing mindfulness supported trainee school psychologists' personal and professional development, particularly related to compassion, resilience and therapeutic presence.

This research explores school belonging (SB) experiences of young people in the UK who live under the legal status of a special guardianship order (SGO). A high proportion of these young people have had adverse childhood experiences, some are care experienced. This research uses case study to triangulate the perspectives of the young people, their guardians, and designated teachers (DTs) to develop understanding of school belonging, and considers the implications for educational psychologists (EPs), school policy, and staff practice. Seven case studies were undertaken, each including a young person, their guardian/s and their school DT, resulting in 21 semi-structured interviews. A hierarchical structured approach was used in all adult interviews, and personal construct psychology techniques were used in young people's interviews. Individual case data were analysed using thematic analysis. Superordinate themes generated included identity, fitting in, diagnosis, agency, individuality and association, school's community connection, systems as obstacles, relationship and connection to others, protection and autonomy, school processes, support and features, and organisational change. The findings emphasise the broad influences on the school belonging of this group, including individual characteristics, peer and staff relationships, school processes, and the communication and interaction between school, home, and the wider community.

The United Kingdom's response to growing multiculturalism is subject to debate over how to respond, accommodate, and promote cultural diversity. This impacts on the role of educational psychologists (EPs) who work with children and young people (CYP), their families, and professionals from a variety of cultural backgrounds. EPs are responsible for engaging in, and developing, culturally responsive practice (CRP), an ongoing process which is both intrapersonal and interpersonal. Despite the pertinent influence of culture on educational psychology practice, there is a paucity of research exploring how EPs take culture into account in their work. A two-round Delphi method was used to explore how EPs can develop CRP, by reviewing literature pertaining to culture within school psychology practice, and more broadly within the psychological professions. A deductive thematic analysis was used to identify statements associated with CRP which were presented to EPs (n = 23) in round one, asking them to rate their perceived importance for their practice. In round two, EPs were invited to evaluate their response to statements which had not met consensus in round one (n = 18). 82 statements met consensus as key features of CRP for EPs, which are presented within a guiding self-reflective framework for practice.

The proportion of pupils with English as an additional language (EAL) has steadily risen in recent years in England, reaching just under one in five of all pupils aged 5-16 in 2021, with a total of over 365 languages spoken between them. Despite educational psychologists' (EPs) practice being concerned with reduction of barriers that prevent children from fully accessing education, a review of the educational psychology literature provides little information to suggest that EPs are responding to the increasing linguistic diversity of their client group. Further, there is a lack of shared understanding among EPs of the specific competencies needed to address the specific language needs of this population. Through a three-round Delphi, 90 statements were identified as key features required for EP practice with EAL students and families; these statements were then structured into a guiding framework for EP practice. The implications of this framework, and its limitations, are discussed.

Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a relationship-based, strengths focused intervention based on theories of intersubjectivity and attachment. Originally developed within family work, the evidence investigating the application of VIG within different relationships and settings is growing. Educational psychologists (EPs) are amongst practitioners who are electing to train in VIG and apply it in practice. This study sought to investigate how a VIG model of delivery has been developed within one educational psychology service (EPS). A case study design was implemented in which seven members of the EP team, all of whom are VIG trained, were interviewed and the data were thematically analysed. Findings illustrate the participants' perceptions of factors and the infrastructure that have influenced the development of a VIG model of delivery at the service level, and which factors have sustained it over time. Implications for EP services, EP practice, and future research are considered.

Though nearly one-fourth of U.S. public school students are of Latinx descent, research regarding these students' evolving needs and the ways in which high school-based helping professionals can work toward addressing them continues to lag. This scoping study bridges that gap by (1) systematically describing Latinx high school students' concerns as reported in the peer-reviewed literature, and (2) mapping out recommendations for school-based helping professionals to support Latinx youth more effectively and intervene on their behalf. Toward this aim, we review peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2021 that include high school-based helping professionals in their sample population and provide implications or recommendations for working with Latinx students. Sixteen articles are identified and analyzed using a template analysis approach. We report their substantive focus, target professional group, and geographic location. Our analysis identifies 14 issues as being challenging and/or concerning for Latinx students and 14 recommendations for high school-based helping professionals to address them. Most recommendations identified are related to the use of culturally responsive practices. Identified concerns and recommendations are discussed in detail to spotlight solutions, future research directions, and practical implications for school-based helping professionals.

Research on the growth mindset interventions (GMIs) on nonacademic outcomes is burgeoning. The present systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of GMIs on social-emotional outcomes among school-aged children and adolescents. Using the PRIMSA guidelines, our search across three electronic databases (PsycINFO, ERIC, and PubMed) yielded an initial identification of 1057 records. Inclusion criteria include publication format, language, participant age range, and intervention purpose, focus and components. Risk of bias was analyzed at the study level using a list of research quality indicators and across studies by comparing nonpeer reviewed versus peer reviewed publications. Our final sample yielded 13 papers including 14 studies. The findings from these studies were extracted to examine research quality, sample characteristics, intervention content, and intervention effects of the GMIs. Results showed despite that study quality, samples, and intervention designs varied, core components of the interventions were highly similar. Intervention effect results suggest that mindsets can be changed toward a growth orientation through brief GMIs, and effectiveness of GMIs on social-emotional outcomes is promising, especially in reducing depressive symptoms and aggressive reactions to perceived social exclusion. Research gaps and future directions, and implications for school psychologists and other mental health professionals are discussed.

The research aimed to estimate educational psychologist (EP) service provision required to deliver a "good" level of EP service within primary and secondary schools in one local authority (LA) in England. There is no current shared understanding of the level of demand for EP services, nor the required workforce to meet projected needs. Using a mixed methods design, four index schools were recruited; key staff within each school forecasted potential future commissioning of EP services. Content analysis was used to present key findings from focus groups/interviews to a working group of EPs who assessed the exact time-cost required to supply services. By extrapolation of the data, a model forecasted potential future demand for EP services across all primary and secondary schools in the LA. Findings reveal that all four schools would, with sufficient funding, commission significantly more EP time than they do currently; details and proportions are provided. The model predicts that schools across the LA would commission a fourfold increase in EP time purchased. Under the assumption that other EP service levels remain constant, the model suggests that meeting this need for increased EP services would require more than doubling of the size of the LA EP workforce.

Background: Specialists working in school settings provide crucial psychological and pedagogical support to students, teachers and other members of the school community. As the roles played by psychologists, educators, speech therapists and other specialists vary internationally, more needs to be understood about their lived experiences and perceptions of working in particular school systems. Purpose: This study, undertaken in Poland, sought to explore specialists' experiences of supporting teachers in schools and capture their perceptions of their roles. Method: A total of 30 online semi-structured interviews were conducted with psychologists, educators, and speech therapists who were working as specialists in schools. The data were analysed qualitatively, using a two-stage coding procedure based on a grounded theory approach. Findings: Through in-depth analysis of rich interview data, three thematic areas emerged: (1) specialists' collaboration with teachers; (2) specialists' tasks to support teachers in their work with students; and (3) changes that might assist specialists in better supporting teachers. Their tasks included meeting with students' parents and other institutions outside the school, conducting interventions, collaborating with teachers and managing documentation. The specialists believed that there were insufficient numbers of them working in their institutions to meet all the needs of students, teachers and parents. Conclusions: The study highlights the significance and potential of collaboration between specialists and teachers in fostering students' development, and the need for resources to ensure that appropriate support can be provided.

This systematic literature review explored how educational psychologists (EPs) use cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) interventions within school settings, with whom and to what effect. The information available on the intervention design and delivery was benchmarked against Fuggle et al.'s framework that identified CBT competencies required for working with children and young people (CYP). Research into school-based CBT interventions involving EPs between 2013 and 2021 was systematically identified and assessed for quality using quantitative and qualitative frameworks. The aggregative analysis highlighted the heterogeneity of CBT interventions being used to support a range of outcomes. The heterogeneity of interventions made it difficult to draw decisive conclusions about the impact of CBT. Although intervention impact varied, overall a positive impact was observed particularly for CYP with anxiety. Benchmarking interventions against a CBT framework enabled competency profiling within EP practice, suggesting EPs could potentially work more collaboratively with school staff and parents. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.
