Upon impact, the free surface of a solid metal may eject a cloud of fast and fine particles. Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) is one of the optical diagnostics used to characterize these ejecta. Although the technique provides a direct way to estimate the particle velocities in the single scattering regime, it has been shown that multiple scattering cannot be neglected in real ejecta. Here, we derive a model for PDV measurements starting from the first principles of wave scattering. We establish rigorously the relationship between the specific intensity and the measured signal, as well as the Radiative Transport Equation (RTE) that describes the evolution of the specific intensity upon scattering and absorption in dynamic ejecta, including the effects of inelastic scattering and inhomogeneities in the optical properties. We also establish rigorously the connection between the Monte Carlo scheme used for numerical simulations and the solution to the RTE. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate the crucial contribution of multiple scattering to PDV spectrograms as well as the effect of statistical inhomogeneities in particle size distribution. A theoretical investigation of positron scattering from phosphorus-containing compounds (viz., PH 3 , P 2 H 4 , PCl 3 , PF 3 , PBr 3 , POF 3 , POCl 3 , and H 2 PO 4) is reported in this article. The quantum mechanical potential scattering approach is utilized to calculate integral elastic, excitation, momentum transfer, direct ionization, positronium formation, total ionization, inelastic, differential, and total cross sections on a fine energy grid from 1 to 5000 eV. The ionization contribution in the inelastic scattering is estimated using the complex scattering potential-ionization contribution technique. Prior research on positron collisions with these targets is scarce; as a result, the purpose of this study is to make up, at least in part, for this deficiency in cross-section data. In addition to being pertinent to positron transport analyses, such as Monte Carlo methods, the current results should be useful to benchmark the accuracy and validity of positron molecule collision computations and, more significantly, to compare these calculations with related electron scattering outcomes. Furthermore, the calculated cross sections of PH 3 are compared with NH 3 and other phosphorus-containing compounds. The analysis makes it abundantly evident that the atoms on the periphery of a molecule have a substantially larger impact on the scattering process than the central atom. To analyze the scattering dynamics of positrons and their anti-particle electrons, a comparative study of cross sections of H 2 PO 4 and H 2 SO 4 is also presented. First measurements of internal quantum-state distributions for nitric oxide (NO) evaporating from liquid benzyl alcohol are presented over a broad range of temperatures, performed by liquid-microjet techniques in an essentially collision-free regime, with rotational/spin–orbit populations in the 2Π1/2,3/2 manifolds measured by laser-induced fluorescence. The observed rotational distributions exhibit highly linear (i.e., thermal) Boltzmann plots but notably reflect rotational temperatures (Trot) as much as 30 K lower than the liquid temperature (Tjet). A comparable lack of equilibrium behavior is also noted in the electronic degrees of freedom but with populations corresponding to spin–orbit temperatures (TSO) consistently higher than Trot by ∼15 K. These results unambiguously demonstrate evaporation into a non-equilibrium distribution, which, by detailed-balance considerations, predict quantum-state-dependent sticking coefficients for incident collisions of NO at the gas–liquid interface. Comparison and parallels with previous experimental studies of NO thermal desorption and molecular-beam scattering in other systems are discussed, which suggests the emergence of a self-consistent picture for the non-equilibrium dynamics. The main purpose of this study is to explore the intensity of the scattered wave energy and the total intensity scattered around a discontinuity in a slab, considering strain and kinetic energy in the case of SH waves. The problem is very intriguing because of the multiple scattering and reflections from both the failure and the traction-free boundaries of the slab. The lowest mode of the wave is considered to decrease the complexity of the problem. Increase in frequency results in the growth of chaotic patterns with additional side lobes appearing along with the backward and forward peaks. Reflected waves of the flat boundaries in the slab disappear on the discontinuity when the thickness of the slab increases, and the results approach the infinite medium solution. However, when the size of the failure is comparable to the thickness of the slab, their effect dominates the intensity. In addition, resonance and focusing occur depending on the wavelengths and the thickness of the slab. The biggest increase in the intensity of scattered energy is especially detected on the upper and lower side of the discontinuity. In the present study, scattering of gravity waves by different wave barrier configurations is analyzed under the assumptions of small amplitude wave theory. The wave past barriers are assumed to follow a nonlinear pressure drop boundary condition. The boundary value problem is solved using iterative Dual Boundary Element Method (DBEM) which facilitates the problem-solving in a single domain. Based on the hydrodynamic characteristics, it is revealed that a pair of inverted T-type porous barrier is effective for wave damping application. Further, a parametric analysis is carried for the inverted T-type barrier to understand the effect of porosity, relative submergence of the barrier, relative spacing between the barriers and relative width of barriers on wave scattering, wave forces and moments. It is observed that increasing the porosity of the inverted T-type twin barrier increases the wave transmission but reduces the wave forces and moments. It is revealed that the relative depth of submergence $ {h_1}/h $ h 1 / h significantly affects the wave scattering and wave loads on the twin inverted T barrier. Varying the relative spacing between the inverted T-type barrier, $ S/h $ S / h from 0 to 1 does not change the wave transmission significantly but changes the wave forces and moments appreciably. It is recommended to increase the value of relative width of the wave barrier, $ B/h $ B / h , only if wave transmission need to be reduced considerably for a selected porosity, the relative depth of submergence and relative spacing between the barrier, but at the expense of higher vertical wave force and wave-induced moments. In this work the scattering of time-harmonic thermoelastic waves by a multi-layered thermoelastic body is considered. The mathematical formulation of the scattering problem is presented in a unified four-dimensional form. Using the thermoelastic analogue of Betti's identity, the transmission conditions and asymptotic analysis in the dyadic fundamental solution of thermoelasticity, an integral representation of the scattered field as well as formulas of the thermoelastic far-field patterns containing the physical parameters of the scatterer's layers are constructed. Via the Rellich's Lemma for vector fields, the Helmholtz decomposition of thermoelastic waves and the Kupradze's radiation conditions, uniqueness of solution is proved. Setting the solution to be a linear combination of single- and double- layer thermoelastic potentials and using their jump relations, the scattering problem is transformed into a system of integral equations written in a matrix form. [Display omitted] Developing innovative surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanotags continues to attract significant attention due to their unparalleled sensitivity and specificity for in vitro diagnostic and in vivo tumor imaging applications. Here, we report a new class of bright and stable SERS nanotags using alkylmercaptan-PEG (AMP) polymers. Due to its amphiphilic structure and a thiol anchoring group, these polymers strongly absorb onto gold nanoparticles, leading to an inner hydrophobic layer and an outer hydrophilic PEG layer. The inner hydrophobic layer serves to "lock in" the Raman reporter molecules adsorbed on the particle surface via favorable hydrophobic interactions that also allow denser PEG coatings, which "lock out" other molecules from competitive binding or adsorbing to the gold surface, thereby providing superior colloidal and signal stability. The higher grafting densities of AMP polymers compared to conventional thiolated PEG also led to dramatic increases in cellular target selectivity, with specific-to-nonspecific binding ratios reaching beyond an order of magnitude difference. Experimental evaluations and theoretical considerations of dielectric polarization and light scattering indicate that the hydrophobic layer provides a more favorable dielectric environment with less plasmon dampening, greater particle scattering efficiency, and increased Raman reporter polarizability. Accordingly, SERS nanotags with AMP polymer coatings are observed to be considerably brighter (∼10-fold). Furthermore, the AMP-coated SERS nanotag's increased intensity and avidity can boost cellular detection sensitivity by nearly two orders of magnitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 2‐D GCPIC simulation in a dipole field system has been conducted to explore the excitation of oblique whistler mode chorus waves driven by energetic electrons with temperature anisotropy. The rising tone chorus waves are initially generated near the magnetic equator, consisting of a series of subpackets, and become oblique during their propagation. It is found that electron holes in the wave phase space, which are formed due to the nonlinear cyclotron resonance, oscillate in size with time during subpacket formation. The associated inhomogeneity factor varies accordingly, giving rise to various frequency chirping in different phases of subpackets. Distinct nongyrotropic electron distributions are detected in both wave gyrophase and stationary gyrophase. Landau resonance is found to coexist with cyclotron resonance. This study provides multidimensional electron distributions involved in subpacket formation, enabling us to comprehensively understand the nonlinear physics in chorus wave evolution. In this study, we investigate the electron distributions in various phase spaces associated with subpacket formation, by performing a two‐dimensional simulation in a dipole field. It is found that the electrons can be trapped in the wave phase space through both cyclotron and Landau resonances. These two resonance interactions can also produce the "bump" and "plateau" shapes in momentum space, as well as the fine density structures in spatial space. The sensitivity of atom interferometers depends on their ability to realize long pulse separation times and prevent loss of contrast by limiting the expansion of the atomic ensemble within the interferometer beam through matter-wave collimation. Here we investigate the impact of atomic interactions on collimation by applying a lensing protocol to a 39K Bose-Einstein condensate at different scattering lengths. Tailoring interactions, we measure energies corresponding to (340 ± 12) pK in one direction. Our results are supported by an accurate simulation, which allows us to extrapolate a 2D ballistic expansion energy of (438 ± 77) pK. Based on our findings we propose an advanced scenario, which enables 3D expansion energies below 16 pK by implementing an additional pulsed delta-kick. Our results pave the way to realize ensembles with more than 1 × 105 atoms and 3D energies in the two-digit pK range in typical dipole trap setups without the need for micro-gravity or long baseline environments. Precision measurements with atom interferometers benefit from reducing the expansion rate of the atomic ensemble within the interferometric beam through matter-wave collimation. Tropical-tropopause-layer cirrus clouds and their radiative effects represent a major uncertainty in the evaluation of Earth's energy budget. High-altitude aircraft offer an opportunity to provide observations at cirrus cloud altitudes, most commonly using in situ measurements of ice particle optical properties and composition. In particular, remote sensing of scattering properties and near-IR ice water absorption in the limb can provide unique insights into thin and sub-visible cirrus clouds. Here we present novel spectroscopic observations of path-averaged ice water absorptions on board NASA's Global Hawk aircraft during the Airborne Tropical TRopopause Experiment (ATTREX), which took place in 2011, 2013, and 2014. The University of California Los Angeles and University of Heidelberg mini-differential optical absorption spectroscopy (mini-DOAS) instrument provided multi-angle limb-scanning observations of scattered solar radiation in the near-IR (900–1726 nm), allowing the identification of ice and liquid water, O 2 , CO 2 , and H 2 O. The VLIDORT-QS radiative transfer (RT) code was specifically developed for this study and used to simulate high-altitude limb observations for varied cloud scenarios. We performed a comprehensive sensitivity study, developing a fundamental understanding of airborne near-IR limb observations of cirrus clouds. We identified two general distinct cases: a linear regime for optically thin clouds, where the ice absorption is proportional to ice water content (IWC), and a regime for optically thick cirrus clouds, where ice absorption is in saturation and independent of IWC. Results also demonstrate how molecular oxygen absorption can be used to infer information on optical properties of ice particles in the second regime only, with minimal information for thin cirrus clouds. We also explored the feasibility of retrieving IWC from mini-DOAS path-averaged ice water absorption (SIWP) measurements. This innovative interpolation-based approach requires a small number of RT calculations per observation to determine the sensitivity of SIWP to IWC. Spectral retrievals were applied for a particularly interesting case during Science Flight 2 over Guam in February 2014, during which the aircraft flew in circles in the same general area for an extended period of time. Retrieved IWC results are consistent with independent in situ measurements from other instruments on board. The measurements of ice particle scattering and absorption at different azimuths relative to the sun and at different altitudes represent a unique opportunity to test our approach and to infer properties of the ice particles, together with information on cirrus cloud radiative transfer. We conducted a statistical analysis of local phase space density (PSD) minima across a wide energy range (∼20 keVs to ∼10 MeV), using observations from the Van Allen Probes and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite. We identified deepening minima in PSD profiles of multi‐MeV (∼5% occurrence) and of "seed" electrons (up to 15% occurrence, corresponding to ∼70–100 s keV) and compared their distribution with a 3D diffusion model using the Versatile Electron Radiation Belts (VERB) code. The comparison of the observed and modeled distributions suggests that the PSD minima of seed electrons are likely associated with hiss waves and the corresponding L‐shell dependent electron lifetimes. However, the observed distribution was not fully reproduced by the model, potentially indicating other fast loss mechanisms of seed electrons. The general structure of infrared divergences in the scattering of massive particles is captured by the soft anomalous dimension matrix. The latter can be computed from a correlation function of multiple Wilson lines. The state-of-the-art two-loop result has a tantalizingly simple structure that is not manifest in the calculations. We argue that the complexity in intermediate steps of the known calculations comes from spurious, regulator-dependent terms. Based on this insight we propose a different infrared regulator that is associated to only one of the Wilson lines. We demonstrate that this streamlines obtaining the two-loop result: computing the required Feynman integrals via the differential equations method, only multiple polylogarithmic functions appear (to all orders in the dimensional regulator), as opposed to elliptic polylogarithms. We show that the new method is promising for higher-loop applications by computing a three-loop diagram of genuine complexity, and provide the answer in terms of multiple polylogarithms. We construct an integrable physical model of a single particle scattering with impurities spread on a circle. The S-matrices of the scattering with the impurities are such that the quantized energies of this system, coming from the Bethe Ansatz equations, correspond to the imaginary parts of the non-trivial zeros of the the Riemann ζ(s) function along the axis of the complex s-plane. A simple and natural generalization of the original scattering problem leads instead to Bethe Ansatz equations whose solutions are the non-trivial zeros of the Dirichlet L-functions again along the axis . The conjecture that all the non-trivial zeros of these functions are aligned along this axis of the complex s-plane is known as the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis (GRH). In the language of the scattering problem analysed in this paper the validity of the GRH is equivalent to the completeness of the Bethe Ansatz equations. Moreover the idea that the validity of the GRH requires both the duality equation (i.e. the mapping s → 1 – s) and the Euler product representation of the Dirichlet L-functions finds additional and novel support from the physical scattering model analysed in this paper. This is further illustrated by an explicit counterexample provided by the solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations which employ the Davenport-Heilbronn function , i.e. a function whose completion satisfies the duality equation χ(s) = χ(1 – s) but that does not have an Euler product representation. In this case, even though there are infinitely many solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations along the axis , there are also infinitely many pairs of solutions away from this axis and symmetrically placed with respect to it. We develop a compressible liquid-drop model to describe the crust of neutron stars for which the role of the nuclear clusters, the neutron gas, and the electrons are clearly identified. The novelty relies on the contribution of the neutron gas, which is qualitatively adjusted to reproduce 'ab initio' predictions in dilute neutron matter. We relate the properties of dilute neutron matter to the ones of neutron stars crust and we compare the mean-field approximation to an improved approach that better describes dilute neutron matter1. The latter is quite sensitive to the unitary limit, a universal feature of Fermi systems having a large value of the scattering length and a small interaction range. While the impact of the accurate description of dilute neutron matter is important in uniform matter (up to 30% corrections with respect to a mean-field calculations), we find a reduction of this impact in the context of the crust of neutron stars due to the additional matter components (nuclear clusters and electrons). In agreement with our previous works, dilute neutron matter is however a necessary ingredient for accurate predictions of the properties of the crust of neutron stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The free space di-proton (1p1p) and di-neutron (o n o n) are not bound and are non-existent. However, the latter can and does exist as a 1S o entity in the confines of a quantum field of a nearby nucleus. Igor Kadenko et al. have shown that when a single low energy neutron approaches within femtometers of a Tb or Au nucleus, o n actually sequesters a neutron from the nuclear skin to form the di-neutron (o n ↓ o n ↑) residing in the quantum field (QF) of the heavy nucleus. This product can be expressed as [ Φ n1 ⊗ Φ n2 ] ⊗ Φ Nuc (a three-body problem), leaving the di-neutron free to fuse with the nearby nucleus leading to useful transmutation products. During Fleischmann-Pons heat effect (FPHE) electrolysis experiments, the di-neutron is also formed via deuteron-electron capture; Φ e - ⊗ Φ D + (for a near relativistic electron) suggests a positive scattering length (electron penetration below the Bohr radius) and di-neutron formation. Since the uncharged o n o n can freely pass through the Coulomb barrier of the deuteron (2D+), the resulting hydrogen-4 can undergo electro-weak decay to 4He. The di-neutron provides a mechanism for the FPHE observed during the electrolysis of palladium deuteride in D 2 O, which has now been confirmed and reproduced by M. R. Staker. • The di-neutron serves as the reactive intermediate in the Fleischmann-Pons Heat Effect. • The bound di-neutron is kinematically stabilized when near a large metal nucleus. • The bound di-neutron can fuse with deuterium in the absence of a Coulombic barrier. • When the bound di-neutron fuses with a deuteron, excess heat and helium-4 and hydrogen-3 are formed. • The di-neutron is non-ionizable and is applicable towards a variety of useful transmutations. Due to the ambiguity related to the lack of phase information, determining the physical parameters of multilayer thin films from measured neutron and X‐ray reflectivity curves is, on a fundamental level, an underdetermined inverse problem. This ambiguity poses limitations on standard neural networks, constraining the range and number of considered parameters in previous machine learning solutions. To overcome this challenge, a novel training procedure has been designed which incorporates dynamic prior boundaries for each physical parameter as additional inputs to the neural network. In this manner, the neural network can be trained simultaneously on all well‐posed subintervals of a larger parameter space in which the inverse problem is underdetermined. During inference, users can flexibly input their own prior knowledge about the physical system to constrain the neural network prediction to distinct target subintervals in the parameter space. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated in various scenarios, including multilayer structures with a box model parameterization and a physics‐inspired special parameterization of the scattering length density profile for a multilayer structure. In contrast to previous methods, this approach scales favourably when increasing the complexity of the inverse problem, working properly even for a five‐layer multilayer model and a periodic multilayer model with up to 17 open parameters. There is still a gap in understanding phonon scattering by geometrical defects at the nanoscale, and it remains a significant challenge for heat transfer management in nanoscale devices and systems. In this study, we aim to explore the characteristics of phonon scattering by a single pore to gain insights into thermal transport in nanostructures. The paper outlines a methodology for assessing the spatial distribution of the magnitude of the radial, azimuthal, and polar components of the velocity of scattered phonons by a spherical pore. We demonstrated that the size parameter, commonly employed in electromagnetic wave scattering theory, is vital in determining the scattering regime. Specifically, we show that the calculated scattering efficiency has the same pattern as that commonly obtained in classical wave scattering theory. However, we found that crystallographic directions are pivotal in shaping the scattering patterns, especially in the regions where scattering patterns are defined by the Mie resonances. This article illustrates the hydroelastic interactions between surface gravity waves and a floating elastic plate in a two-layer liquid with variable bottom topography under the assumptions of small amplitude waves and potential flow theory. In this study, semi-infinite and finite-length plates are considered. The eigenfunction expansion method is applied in the fluid region with uniform bottom topography. A system of differential equations (mild-slope equations) is solved in the fluid region with variable bottom topography. From the matching and jump conditions, the solution is expressed as a linear algebraic system from which all the unknown constants are computed. We explored the effects of density ratio, depth ratio, and bottom topography on the bending moment, shear force, and the deflection of the elastic plate. Results show that when the density ratio becomes closer to one, the occurred bending moment and shear forces to the elastic plates tend to diminish. The bending moment and shear forces to the pates are higher and lower at a smaller depth ratio for the incident surface wave and interfacial waves, respectively. The variations in the bending moment, shear force, and plate deflection, caused by surface and interfacial waves, are observed to be in opposite trends, respectively. Bottom profiles similarly affect semi-infinite and finite-length plates when they undergo free-edge conditions. These effects, however, are substantial when the plate is simply supported at the edges. Elastic plate with free edges experiences lower deflection for concave-up and plane-sloping bottoms for incident surface and interfacial waves, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both surface motion and hole stress concentration have always been concerned in engineering design. In this paper, a theoretical approach is used to study the scattering problem of circular cavities under a non-symmetrical V-shaped canyon. The wave displacement function is obtained by solving the Helmholtz equation that meets the zero-stress boundary conditions by adopting the method of separation of variables and the symmetric method. Based on the complex function method, multi-polar coordinate method and region-matching technique, algebraic equations are established at relevant conditions, which include auxiliary and free boundary conditions. Then, according to sample statistics, a least-square method is used instead of the Fourier expansion method to solve the undetermined coefficients of the algebraic equations by discrete boundary. Numerical results show that the theoretical method is verified valid by the finite element method and the reduced model, and the displacement of the free surface and the stress of the circular cavity are related to the shape of the canyon, the position of the circular cavity, the direction of the incident wave and the frequency content of the excitation. The stability analysis of a deep buried tunnel subjected to dynamic disturbance is an important issue. In this study, the transient response has been obtained by establishing a water-rich tunnel model considering excavation damage zone (EDZ). Based on Biot's two-phase dynamic theory and wave function expansion method, the analytical solution of dynamic response around the water-rich tunnel containing EDZ subjected to P wave is derived. Moreover, Fourier transform and Duhamel's integral technique is introduced to calculate the transient response, and the equivalent blasting curve is adopted to input excitation function. The dimensionless parameters thickness N and shear modulus ratio μ are defined to characterize the degree of damage in the surrounding rock, investigating the influencing factors, such as the parameters and the incident source frequencies. The results indicate that the dynamic stress concentration factor (DSCF) gradually decreases as the dimensionless parameters increase. Additionally, it is observed that the DSCF is more sensitive to changes in the thickness parameter N. Finally, the influence of the waveform parameters has been taken into account in the analysis of transient response, and the stress state and transfer process in each time stage of the EDZ are analyzed. Theoretical pseudopotentials and dispersion potentials are used to study ground-state hyperfine splitting frequencies of alkali-metal atoms (Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) in noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) in all combinations. With a single fitting parameter, calculations based on first-order perturbation theory qualitatively present each temperature dependence of the measured frequency shift. With this parameter and excitation energies of alkali-metal and noble-gas atoms, the hyperfine splitting frequency of alkali-metal atoms is suitable for investigating the properties of noble-gas atoms, such as the s-wave scattering length of electrons, the electric-dipole polarizability, and the van der Waals radius. Although photothermal imaging was originally designed to detect individual molecules that do not emit or small nanoparticles that do not scatter, the technique is now being applied to image and spectroscopically characterize larger and more sophisticated nanoparticle structures that scatter light strongly. Extending photothermal measurements into this regime, however, requires revisiting fundamental assumptions made in the interpretation of the signal. Herein, we present a theoretical analysis of the wavelength-resolved photothermal image and its extension to the large particle scattering regime, where we find the photothermal signal to inherit a nonlinear dependence upon pump intensity, together with a contraction of the full-width-at-half-maximum of its point spread function. We further analyze theoretically the extent to which photothermal spectra can be interpreted as an absorption spectrum measure, with deviations between the two becoming more prominent with increasing pump intensities. Companion experiments on individual 10, 20, and 100 nm radius gold nanoparticles evidence the predicted nonlinear pump power dependence and image contraction, verifying the theory and demonstrating new aspects of photothermal imaging relevant to a broader class of targets. The scattering of charged particles by oxygen ion cyclotron harmonic (OCH) waves in the inner magnetosphere is investigated by evaluating the relevant quasi‐linear diffusion coefficients. Recent studies demonstrated that OCH waves are oxygen ion Bernstein modes and their complex kinetic dispersion relation has made it challenging to assess their role in scattering charged particles. The present study calculates the quasi‐linear diffusion coefficients for the scattering of electrons and ions by OCH waves using their kinetic dispersion relation. The results show that OCH waves can effectively scatter electrons between ∼100 eV and 100s keV via Landau resonance. They are also capable of heating cold helium and oxygen ions through cyclotron resonances. Specially, it is found that the 4th harmonic of OCH waves can lead to effective heating of helium ions, while oxygen ions would interact more efficiently with lower harmonics of OCH waves. Radial diffusion (RD) induced by ULF waves can contribute to particle acceleration and scattering. Past global simulations that incorporate RD often use dipole magnetic fields, which could not realistically reveal the role of RD. To better understand the effects of RD and identify whether a background magnetic field model matters in understanding the ring current dynamics in response to RD, we simulate a storm event with different magnetic configurations using a global kinetic ring current model. Results indicate that RD can effectively diffuse protons of hundreds of keV to inner regions (L ∼ 3.5), especially in recovery phase. Comparisons with in‐situ observations demonstrate that simulations with TS05 overall capture both the intensity and variations of proton fluxes with the aid of RD, whereas that with a dipole field significantly overestimates low‐L region fluxes. This study implies adopting realistic magnetic fields is important for correctly interpreting the role of RD. For mathematical convenience, in scattering research, foundation soil is generally oversimplified to be uniform or horizontally stratified site. This study aims to evaluate anti-plane scattering by a circular cavity in complex stratified sites. To simulate the complex stratified sites, a novel scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) for scalar waves is first derived in the Hamilton system. The scattering analysis is performed utilizing the substructure replacement method. Numerical examples verify the accuracy of the method. Pulsating aurora, which consists of diffuse patches blinking on and off, is caused by pitch angle scattering of radiation belt electrons into the loss cone by lower-band chorus waves. Understanding the drivers of pulsating aurora is important as it is a long-lasting and widespread phenomenon, accounting for significant energy transfer from the solar wind into the ionosphere. Substorm injections, which transport electrons from the magnetotail into the inner magnetosphere, are one source of electrons in this region. Injections have been observed simultaneously with pulsating aurora during conjunctions between ground cameras and satellites. In addition, previous work has also shown that substorms can enhance chorus activity (the fundamental process that produces pulsating aurora), providing a mechanism linking substorms to pulsating aurora. To further study this connection, we used the Van Allen Probes and all-sky cameras to look at events where pulsating aurora and substorm injections were observed at different locations in Magnetic Local Time (MLT), rather than focusing only on conjunctions. To make this comparison, we calculated the drift rate of electrons originating from observed injections and projected their motion forward in time until their Magnetic Local Time was the same as the ground camera. When the electrons are located at the same MLT as the ground camera, the pulsating aurora they cause would most likely occur in the field of view of the camera. We compared the time drifting substorm-injected particles arrived at the MLT of the camera to when pulsating aurora was observed. We found several instances where the initiation or intensification of pulsating aurora was accompanied by the arrival of substorm-injected electrons. We consider a classical problem about dynamic instability that leads to the Langmuir circulation. The problem statement assumes that there is initially a wind-driven shear flow and a plane surface wave propagating in the direction of the flow. The unstable mode is a superposition of (i) shear flow and (ii) surface waves, both modulated in the horizontal spanwise direction and (iii) circulation that is made up with vortices forming near-surface rolls whose axes are coaligned along the shear flow streamlines and whose transverse size corresponds to the modulation period. Usually, the Langmuir circulation is understood as the vortical part of the mode slowly varying in time, which is the combination of the first and the last flows. The novelty of our approach is that we, first, take into account the scattering of the initial surface wave on the slow current. Second, we find the interference of the scattered and the initial waves generating a Stokes drift modulated in the same direction. Third, we establish the subsequent effect of the circulation by the vortex force created by the nonlinear interaction of the initial shear flow and the modulated part of the Stokes drift. Leibovich and Craik previously showed that the third part of the mechanism could maintain the Langmuir circulation. We calculate the growth rate that is approximately twice smaller than that obtained by Craik. Propulsion systems are exposed to environmental ingestion hazards that can cause significant damage and decrease performance. Particles are ingested in a wide range of flight environments that can cause immediate engine failure or long-term damage. An accurate measurement technique has been developed to quantify particle ingestion and aid engine health monitoring. This sensor utilizes scattering and extinction techniques along with machine learning models to measure particle characteristics based on a robust and versatile library. The capabilities of this sensor have been demonstrated using solid quartz particles on the Rolls-Royce M250-C20B particle ingestion turboshaft test engine. To the authors' knowledge, this work presents the first demonstration and validation of optical solid particle sensing in a turbine engine. CSPEC sand (Mil-E-5007C) was ingested for the validation test at two different feed rates using a sand feeder. The sand concentrations were 45 mg/m³ and 22 mg/m³. The sensor outputs the particle characteristics of aspect ratio (AR), size distribution (s), Sauter mean diameter (D32), and the particle mass flowrate. The Sauter mean diameter and mass flowrate of ingested sand were calculated using the machine learning model outputs and validated by independent measurements. Theoretical explanation of the super-resolution imaging by contact microspheres created a point of attraction for nanoimaging research during the last decade with many models proposed, yet its origin remains largely elusive. Using a classical double slit object, the key factors responsible for this effect are identified by an ab initio imaging model comprising object illumination, wave scattering, and image reconstruction from the diffracted far fields. The scattering is found by a full-wave solution of the Maxwell equations. The formation of super-resolved images relies on coherent effects, including the light scattering into the waves circulating inside the microsphere and their re-illumination of the object. Achieving the super-resolution of the double slit requires a wide illumination cone as well as a deeply sub-wavelength object-to-microsphere separation. We evaluate the feasibility of Bose–Einstein condensate stars (BECS) as models for the interior of neutron stars (NSs). BECS are compact objects composed of bosons, formed through the spin‐parallel pairing of neutrons. Here, we utilize the astronomical data from GW170817, XMMU J173203.3‐344518 (the lightest NS known), and a novel lower limit on NS core heat capacity to scrutinize the compatibility of BECS with these recent observations of NSs. Our specific focus is to constrain the values of the scattering length a$$ a $$, parameter determining the strength of particle interactions in the model. Our analysis suggests that if the stars involved in GW170817 were BECSs, the scattering length of their constituent bosons should fall within the 4$$ 4 $$ to 10$$ 10 $$ fm range. Additionally, at a scattering length of a∼3.1−4$$ a\sim 3.1-4 $$ fm, stars with mass and radius characteristics akin to XMMU J173203.3‐344518 are identified. Moreover, we find that the heat capacity depends on the mass and temperature of BECS, and surpasses the established lower bound for NS cores when a>2−5$$ a>2-5 $$ fm. In summary, our results endorse BECS models with a∼4$$ a\sim 4 $$ fm, providing NS observables in agreement with diverse observations and contributing to the understanding of NS interiors. The relativistic optical potential method has been used to calculate a complete set of cross sections for positron scattering from neon and argon in the energy range from zero to 1 keV. Elastic, positronium formation, excitation, direct ionization, and grand total cross sections are presented and compared to the recommended results of Ratnavelu et al. Positron scattering from the noble gas atoms neon and argon is calculated using the single-center convergent close-coupling (CCC) method. Unlike previous CCC calculations, we have relaxed the frozen-core approximation by fully opening the outermost s and p shells, and find better agreement with experiment for excitation energies and dipole polarizability. We have used this improved structure model to calculate elastic, elastic differential, total, momentum-transfer, electron-loss, and total bound excitation cross sections. We have applied a complex model potential calculation, scaled to our single-center CCC results, to obtain direct ionization and positronium-formation cross sections for these systems. This complex model potential was also used to calculate results between the positronium-formation and ionization thresholds, giving complete results from 10 - 5 eV to 5000 eV. Flexural-gravity wave blocking occurs in the presence of lateral compressive force. The existing expansion formulae for the velocity potential were limited in the case of distinct real roots of the dispersion relation with the multiplicity one. This limitation is overcome, and we obtain the complete solution for the flexuralgravity wave-maker problem at blocking and saddle points by deriving the expansion formula for velocity potential using the Fourier transform corresponding to the roots of the dispersion relation with multiplicity two and three, respectively. Further, we check the convergence of the newly derived expansion formulae by using the spectral representation of the associated eigenfunction. It has been proved that the eigenfunctions related to the expansion formulae are linearly dependent and satisfy the orthogonal modecoupling relation. Next, we solve a model problem of flexural-gravity wave scattering by a crack using the derived expansion formulae and establish the energy balance relation by applying Green's integral theorem at blocking points for infinite water depth. Whereas the conventional wisdom suggests that the force between non-magnetized homogeneous, stationary, isotropic plasma, and the dust grain is only possible for the case of relative plasma–grain velocity, it is shown that stationary non-spherical asymmetric dust grain immersed in stationary, non-magnetized, isotropic plasma can experience a force caused by the grain–plasma interactions. The component of the force due to scattering of plasma particles in the limit of infinite Debye length is considered analytically. Both the particle scattering and absorption force components are modeled numerically in the limits of infinite and finite Debye length using a newly developed 2D3V Aspherical Particle-in-Cell code. The code simulates interactions of dust grain of selected non-spherical asymmetric shape with plasmas using dust shape conforming coordinates. The simulations confirm the existence of the force on non-spherical asymmetric grain in stationary non-magnetized plasma and show that the plasma screening effects can lead to reversal of the force direction. To characterize fine particulate products in industrial gas–solid processes, insights into the particle properties are accessible via various measurement techniques. For micron particles, online imaging techniques offer a fast and reliable assessment of their size and shape. However, for the shape analysis of submicron particles, only offline techniques, such as SEM and TEM imaging, are available. In this work, an online sensor system based on the principle of elastic light scattering of particles in the gas phase is developed to measure the shape factor of non-spherical particles in the size range of 500 nm to 5 µm. Single aerosol particles are guided through a monochromatic circularly polarized laser light beam by an aerodynamic focusing nozzle, which was developed based on the CFD simulation of the flow and particle movement. The intensity of the scattered light is measured at several discrete positions in the azimuthal direction around the particles. An algorithm computes the sphericity of the particles based on the distribution of the intensity signals. The sensor construction, data processing and analysis are described. Model aerosols with particles of different shapes are investigated to test the developed sensor and show its performance in the determination of the sphericity distribution of particles. A radiative transfer model of water wave scattering in the marginal ice zone is considered. In this context, wave energy redistribution across the directional components of the spectrum as a result of scattering by the constituent ice floes is typically modelled via a scattering kernel describing the far-field directionality of the scattered wave field produced by a single floe in isolation. Recognizing the potential importance of the floe size distribution (FSD) on wave scattering, we propose an enhanced scattering kernel constructed from the far-field scattering pattern of a circular array of floes. This is achieved by solving the self-consistent multiple scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by a large array of floating circular floes with radii sampled from a prescribed FSD. A fast multipole method is implemented to accelerate the numerical estimation of the solution. Simulations are then conducted to characterize the properties of the scattering kernel for a range of configurations. It is found that the scattering kernel obtained for a wide array has a large, narrow transmission peak in the forward direction, while it uniformizes low-amplitude scattered waves in other directions. Interstellar radio wave scattering leads to flux density fluctuations and pulse broadening of pulsar signals. However, Galactic distribution and the structure of the scattering medium are still poorly understood. Pulsar pulse broadening data available for a relatively large number of pulsars is well suited for such investigations. We collected an up-to-date sample of publicly available pulsar scattering data and introduced a new quantity – the reduced scattering strength |$\tilde{\tau }$| to study the Galactic distribution of pulsar scattering in the Milky Way. We show that the current observations are dominated by two distinct pulsar populations: a local and an inner-Galactic one separated by |$\tilde{\tau }=10^{-5.1}$|  s cm6 pc−1. The stronger electron density fluctuations associated with the inner-Galactic population naturally explain the observed steepening of pulsar scattering time τ–dispersion measure relation. We measure an inner disc region with |$3\, {\rm kpc}\ \lt\ \rm r\ \lt\ 5.5\, {\rm kpc}$| from the Galactic centre to have a scattering scale height of about 0.28 kpc, supporting a correlation between interstellar radio scattering and structures associating with the ionized gas and stellar activities. Aims. An energetic particle event related to a corotating interaction region (CIR) structure was observed by the Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory-A (STEREO-A) from 21 to 24 August 2016. Based on an analysis of measurement data, we suggest that instead of being accelerated by distant shocks, a local mechanism similar to diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) acting in the compression region could explain the flux enhancements of 1.8–10.0 MeV nucleon−1 protons. We created simulations to verify our hypothesis. Methods. We developed a coupled model composed of a data-driven analytical background model providing solar wind configuration and a particle transport model represented by the focused transport equation (FTE). We simulated particle transport in the CIR region of interest in order to obtain the evolution of proton fluxes and derive the spectra. Results. We find that the simulation is well correlated with the observation. The mechanism of particle scattering back and forth between the trap-like structure of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) in the compression region is the major factor responsible for the flux enhancements in this energetic particle event, and perpendicular diffusion identified by a ratio of κ⊥/κ|| ∼ 10−2 plays an important role in the temporal evolution of proton fluxes. The objective is to study the combined effect of an incident wave, a surface pressure excess and a finite number of submerged obstacles, in the phenomenon of power transfer to an infinite fluid layer of finite depth. The incident wave and the surface pressure excess have the same harmonic time dependence, a fact that allows to eliminate time altogether and consider only steady-state solutions. The surface pressure excess simulates the effect of winds blowing above the water surface in oceans. The technique used in a first part of the paper relying upon the use of finite Fourier transform and separation of variables is extended here to this end. The method allows to separate local perturbations from progressive or standing wave. Our formulae yield the exact solution in closed form in the absence of obstacles, and provide a clearer insight into the flow properties, as compared to previous investigations. Applications are given for discontinuous surface pressure functions. We put in evidence solutions with no outgoing waves, for which the energy transmitted by the surface pressure is exhausted in generating a standing wave, together with local perturbations. Two numerical applications without/with obstacles, for a parabolic surface pressure profile, allow to assess the energy transfer from the pressure-obstacles system to the fluid. This important advancement is exemplified for the synthesis of sterically‐stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles by reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) in mineral oil at 90 °C. The principle of mass balance is invoked to derive a series of equations for the analysis of the resulting time‐resolved SAXS patterns. Importantly, there is a continuous change in the X‐ray scattering length density for the various components within the reaction mixture. This enables the volume fraction of unreacted BzMA monomer to be calculated at any given time point, which enables the polymerization kinetics to be monitored in situ directly without relying on supplementary characterization techniques. Moreover, SAXS enables the local concentration of both monomer and solvent within the growing swollen nanoparticles to be determined during the polymerization. Data analysis reveals that the instantaneous rate of BzMA polymerization is proportional to the local monomer concentration within the nanoparticles. In this work, we present a joint theoretical and experimental study for positron scattering by isopentane (C 5 H 12 ). These are the first experimental differential cross sections ever measured for the scattering of positrons by the isopentane molecule. The cross-section calculations employed the Schwinger multichannel method in the static plus model polarization potential approximation. The present calculated integral cross sections correctly reproduce the qualitative behavior of the measured total cross sections, while the calculated differential cross sections reproduce the oscillatory patterns observed in the present experimental differential cross sections. The sharp increase, seen in the calculated elastic cross sections as the impact energy goes toward zero, points to the existence of a positron-isopentane bound state, which is consistent with previous experimental results. The wave kinetic equation predicts the averaged temporal evolution of a continuous spectral density of waves either randomly interacting or scattered by the fine structure of a medium. In a wide range of systems, the wave kinetic equation is derived from a fundamental equation of wave motion, which is symmetric through time reversal. By contrast, the corresponding wave kinetic equations is time irreversible: Its solutions monotonically increase an entropy-like quantity. A similar paradox appears whenever one makes a mesoscopic description of the evolution of a very large number of microscopic degrees of freedom, the paradigmatic example being the kinetic theory of dilute gas molecules leading to the Boltzmann equation. Since Boltzmann, it has been understood that a probabilistic understanding solves the apparent paradox. More recently, it has been understood that the kinetic description itself, at a mesoscopic level, should not break time reversal symmetry (Bouchet in J Stat Phys 181(2):515-550, 2020). The time reversal symmetry remains a fundamental property of the mesoscopic stochastic process: Without external forcing, the path probabilities obey a detailed balance relation with respect to an equilibrium quasipotential. The proper theoretical or mathematical tool to derive fully this mesoscopic time reversal stochastic process is large deviation theory: A large deviation principle uncovers a time reversible field theory, characterized by a large deviation Hamiltonian, for which the deterministic wave kinetic equation appears as the most probable evolution. Its irreversibility appears as a consequence of an incomplete description, rather than as a consequence of the kinetic limit itself, or some related chaotic hypothesis. This paper follows Bouchet (J Stat Phys 181(2):515-550, 2020) and a series of other works that derive the large deviation Hamiltonians of the main classical kinetic theories, for instance, Guioth et al. (J Stat Phys 189(20):20, 2022) for homogeneous wave kinetics. We propose here a derivation of the large deviation principle in an inhomogeneous situation, for the linear scattering of waves by a weak random potential. This problem involves microscopic scales corresponding to the typical wavelengths and periods of the waves and mesoscopic ones which are the scales of spatial inhomogeneities in the spectral density of both the random scatterers and the wave spectrum, and the time needed for the random scatterers to alter the wave spectrum. The main assumption of the kinetic regime is a large separation of these microscopic and mesoscopic scales. For the sake of simplicity, we consider a generic model of wave scattering by weak disorder: the Schrödinger equation with a random potential. We derive the path large deviation principle for the local spectral density and discuss its main properties. It is challenging to construct generalized physical models of underwater wave propagation owing to their complex physics and widely varying environmental parameters and dynamical scales. In this article, we present a deep convolutional recurrent autoencoder network (CRAN) for data-driven learning of complex underwater wave scattering and interference. We specifically consider the dynamics of underwater acoustic scattering from various non-uniform seamount shapes leading to complex wave interference patterns of back-scattered and forward-propagated waves. The CRAN consists of a convolutional autoencoder for learning low-dimensional system representation and a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based recurrent neural network for predicting system evolution in low dimensions. The convolutional autoencoder enables efficient dimension reduction of wave propagation by independently learning global and localized wave features. To improve the time horizon of wave dynamics prediction, we introduce an LSTM architecture with a single-shot learning mechanism and optimal time-delayed data embedding. On training the CRAN over 30 cases containing various seamount geometries and acoustic source frequencies, we can predict wave propagation up to a time horizon of 5 times the initiation sequence length for 15 out-of-training cases with a mean L2 error of approximately 10%. For selected out-of-training cases, the prediction time horizon could be increased to 6 times the initiation sequence length. Importantly, such predictions are obtained with physically consistent wave scattering and wave interference patterns and at 50% lower L2 error compared to routinely use standard LSTMs. These results demonstrate the potential of employing such deep neural networks for learning complex underwater ocean acoustic propagation physics. Flexural-gravity wave scattering by an array of vertical porous barriers of various configurations is investigated in finite water depth from the viewpoint of blocking dynamics. A scattering matrix is introduced for the velocity potentials using the canonical eigenfunction expansion method developed for a single propagating wave mode to account for the multiple propagating wave modes. Subsequently, appropriate matching conditions are applied at the interface boundaries and edges to solve the physical problem. Apart from multiple barriers of equal length, the efficiency of four different barrier configurations of unequal lengths is investigated. This study shows that out of these four barrier configurations, the convex and increasing order of the barrier arrangements are more effective as wave-dissipating systems than the concave and decreasing order of the barriers. Bragg reflection occurs in the case of two or more barriers for a specific value of porosity and suitable barrier configuration, whose amplitude decreases with an increase in the number of barriers due to the dissipation of wave energy. The presence of three propagating wave modes in the blocking paradigm leads to mode conversion within a certain range of the frequency space. Both the scattering and dissipation coefficients are influenced by the wave energy transfer rates and the amplitudes of incident, reflected, and transmitted wave modes. This investigation exhibits the presence of discontinuities in the scattering coefficients at frequencies where blocking and mode conversion occur.
