RIVM rapport:This report describes the proposal for the set of (ecological) models to be used as the prime tools in the analysis of the Nature, Landscape and Woodland policy by the Dutch Nature Policy Assessment Office. The identification of the key models is regarded as the first step towards the construction of a consistent set of well-tuned models, enabling a high-quality policy analysis by the Nature Policy Assessment Office. The eventual choice for the key models was based on the results of a thorough inventory of ecological models brought face to face with the demands on the use of policy analysis tools by the Assessment Office. RIVM rapport:Verzuring, vermesting en verdroging behoren tot de belangrijke bedreigingen van de natuurlijke en half-natuurlijke ecosystemen in Nederland. Om de gezamenlijke effecten van deze bedreigingen op de landelijke natuur te evalueren is, in een samenwerkingsverband tussen het RIVM en het SC-DLO, het multistressmodel SMART/MOVE ontwikkeld. In het kader van het Stikstof Onderzoek Programma (STOP) is het modelinstrumentarium uitgebreid met een module voor normstelling voor verzurende en eutrofierende depositie. Met de methode kunnen kritische stikstofdepositieniveaus voor gestelde beleidsdoeleinden berekend en in kaart gebracht worden. Er wordt rekening gehouden met ruimtelijke variatie in bodem, vegetatie en hydrologie. De methode is tevens bruikbaar om kritische niveaus voor zure depositie, of afzonderlijke componenten daarvan, te berekenen. Naast de validatie van verschillende tussenresultaten, zijn enkele eerste uitkomsten getoetst aan gangbare critical loads zoals empirisch vastgesteld en/of berekend met het Simple Mass Balance model. Voordeel van de nieuwe methode is de eenduidige berekeningswijze en de hogere detaillering ten aanzien van het aantal te beschouwen ecosystemen. De tussenresultaten van normstellingsmodule kunnen daarnaast ook gebruikt worden voor verschillende validatiedoeleinden en modelverbeteringen (d.m.v. kalibratie van de kansfuncties uit MOVE en verbeteringen aan de aansluiting tussen SMART en MOVE). Met behulp van de berekende kritische milieugrenzen (in termen van bodem-pH, grondwaterstand en stikstofbeschikbaarheid) kunnen ook streefbeelden voor de realisatie van geplande natuurdoeltypen worden afgeleid, Acidification, eutrophication and desiccation are the most important threats to (semi-)natural ecosystems in the Netherlands. In order to evaluate the magnitude of these threats the RIVM has, in close co-operation with the Winand Staring Centre (SC-DLO), conducted a study to develop a multistress model for terrestrial ecosystems (SMART/MOVE), consisting of a soil model (SMART) and a vegetation model (MOVE). The aim was to develop a method for calculating critical atmospheric deposition levels using SMART/MOVE. This new method can be used to evaluate the critical deposition loads of air-borne nitrogen and acid for several types of terrestrial ecosystems. Some preliminary results have been compared with empirically determined critical loads and values obtained from other models. Although the results of the different methods were quite similar, the critical values for several specific ecosystems differed. The advantage of the new method is the large number of different ecosystems that can be evaluated using a similar standardised method of calculation. Some of the results obtained during the process of calculating the critical deposition loads can also be used to improve SMART/MOVE. Both the results and their use in validating, calibrating and improving SMART/MOVE are described in this report.

RIVM rapport:In de context van het project 'Functionele Biodiversiteit werd de beinvloeding van ecosysteem functies bestudeerd door het effect van pesticiden op zoetwater gemeenschappen bestudeerd. Voedselweb modellen werden opgesteld die het effect beschrijven van een herbicide, linuron en een fungicide, carbendazim, op macrofyten gedomineerde microcosmos. Een vergelijking van functionele en structurele biodiversiteit toonde aan dat functies die geassocieerd zijn met doelsoorten gevoeliger zijn dan soortsamenstelling in het geval van linuron, en minder gevoelig in het geval van carbendazim. In het algemeen is verlies van functie gekoppeld aan verlies van soorten. Alhoewel enig herstel naar de oorspronkelijke soortsamenstelling kan optreden, is het nodig om de relatie met herstel van functies nader te onderzoeken., In the context of the project 'Functional Biodiversity', impairment of ecosystem function by toxic chemicals was studied by modeling the effects of pesticides on freshwater communities. Food web models were built to describe the effects of the herbicide, linuron, and the fungicide, carbendazim, in indoor macrophyte-dominated microcosms. Comparison between functional and structural biodiversity showed functions associated with target species to be more sensitive than species composition in the linuron case, and less sensitive in the carbendazim case. In general, function loss was found to be associated with species loss. While some recovery of species composition occurs, the relationship to recovery of functions needs further study

RIVM rapport:Deze Leidraad kan gebruikt worden bij begrenzing, inrichting, beheer en eventueel aankoop van landbouwgronden, bestemd voor natuurontwikkeling binnen de EHS. Deze gronden zijn vaak licht verontreinigd, mogelijk zodanig dat de nagestreefde natuurdoelen niet haalbaar zijn. Daarom beoogt de Leidraad op basis van een ecotoxicologische risico-inschatting een uitspraak te doen over of een locatie vanuit het oogpunt van bodemverontreiniging kansrijk genoeg is voor de ontwikkeling van een natuurdoeltype en of deze kansrijkdom zo nodig vergroot kan worden via inrichtings- of beheersmaatregelen. De kerngedachte binnen de Leidraad is dat de risicobeoordeling rekening houdt met 'beschikbare gehalten' in de bodem, aangezien de blootstelling van organismen kan veranderen bij veranderende bodemcondities (pH, redox, organische stof) welke op kunnen treden bij de overgang van landbouw naar natuur. The soils of agricultural areas are often slightly polluted, possibly even so polluted that objectives for development of natural areas can not be achieved. Therefore the Guideline should determine whether a location has enough potential for realizing the intended objectives, considering the soil pollution, and whether construction and management of the area could improve opportunities. This is done by means of an ecotoxicological risk assessment. This is based on 'bioavailable' fractions of the soil contaminants, since land-use changes can lead to changes in soil conditions (pH, redox, organic matter) which can change the bioavailable fractions. The framework of the Guideline consists of the following six modules: 1) actual conditions and basic data, 2) the desired development and corresponding scenarios, 3) prognosis of future soil conditions, 4) prognosis of future available fractions of the contaminants, 5) ecotoxicological risk assessments, and 6) the integration of the modules and other relevant factors, and final assessment.

RIVM rapport:De natuur in Nederland gaat kwantitatief - wat betreft het totale areaal - weer vooruit, kwalitatief- wat betreft de soortenrijkdom - echter nog niet. Het Nederlandse landschap vervlakt; grootschalige openheid en streekeigen kenmerken verdwijnen. De toekomstige kwaliteit van de Nederlandse natuur wordt sterk bepaald door de realiseerbaarheid van grote eenheden aaneengesloten natuur, de milieukwaliteit en de inzet van beheersmaatregelen. Van de beoogde Ecologische Hoofdstructuur (EHS) wordt verwacht dat de soortenrijkdom (biodiversiteit) zal toenemen. Bij de uitvoering blijkt het hoge ambitieniveau van een samenhangend netwerk, bestaande uit grote eenheden natuur, niet volledig te worden gerealiseerd. Door te blijven streven naar een meer geconcentreerde invulling in grotere eenheden kan men de uiteindelijk te bereiken natuurkwaliteit alsnog verhogen. De regionale ontwikkeling van de landbouw (schaalvergroting en intensivering), de voorgaande verstedelijking en de vooralsnog hoge milieudruk blijven belangrijke risicofactoren. Vooral in Zuid- en Oost-Nederland blijft de milieukwaliteit onvoldoende om de natuurdoelen te realiseren. Om de natuurdoelstellingen te halen zal daarom de depositie van met name ammoniak verminderd moeten worden, de ruimtelijke ligging van natuur- en emissiegebieden beter op elkaar afgestemd moeten worden, of zal onvermijdelijk verlies van natuurkwaliteit gecompenseerd moeten worden door kwantitatieve (areaal) of kwalitatieve verbetering in gebieden elders., Natural areas in the Netherlands are - at least in terms of total acreage - increasing again. However, as far as the quality of the areas is concerned, the biodiversity is still decreasing. The Netherlands landscape charcteristics are becoming increasingly similar; large-scale open areas and regional characteristics are disappearing. The future quality of the Netherlands' natural areas will be highly determined by the feasibility of connecting large units of natural areas, by ensuring their environmental quality and by supplementing conservation measures. The national Ecological Network is expected do its work in increasing the species diversity (biodiversity). In carrying out these plans, the high-level ambitions of attaining a coherent network of large natural area units has not proven fully realisable. However, continuing to strive for more concentrated and larger units can ultimately still raise the quality of natural areas. The regional developments in agriculture (scaling-up and intensification), and the decreasing but still large urbanisation and great environmental pressure remain important risk factors, especially in the south and east of the Netherlands, where environmental quality is not yet high enough to meet nature conservation targets. Meeting these targets will therefore demand reductions, especially in ammonia deposition, attunement of the geographical locations of natural areas to emission areas and compensation of the unavoidable decline in quality in the natural areas by quantitative (increased acreage) or qualitative improvements in other areas.

RIVM rapport:Deze studie onderzoekt of mobilisatie van zware metalen en nutrienten een beperkende factor kan zijn bij natuurontwikkeling in het Beerze-Reusel-gebied. Na een algemene bechrijving van de risico's van bodemverontreiniging bij natuurontwikkeling, worden de risico's voor een specifieke situatie berekend met behulp van een koppeling van hydrologische, zuur/nutrienten-, zware metaal- en bioaccumulatiemodellen. De studie blijft, gezien de onzekerheden in methodiek, expliciet beperkt tot een probleemverkenning. Voor twee bodemtypen, een veldpodzol en een enkeerdgrond, worden de risico's van twee verzuringsscenario's (onverminderde en verminderde zuurdepositie) en twee kwelscenario's in combinatie met bodemverontreiniging door cadmium en koper doorgerekend bij de omzetting van een weiland in een grasland-ecosysteem. Het blijkt dat onverminderde zure depositie in combinatie met bodemverontreiniging kan leiden tot problemen voor natuurontwikkeling. Dit gebeurt zowel via een direkt effect van verzuring op vegetatie, als via het effect van mobilisatie van cadmium en koper op verschillende soorten organismen en op bodembiologische processen. Door effecten op bodemfauna is op termijn tevens een sterke ophoping van organisch materiaal te verwachten, wat uiteindelijk kan leiden tot een lage diversiteit aan planten- en diersoorten. Koper levert in het algemeen minder problemen dan cadmium, maar door een blijvend stijgende koperconcentratie in het strooisel en daardoor in bodemfauna, kunnen lange termijn effecten ontstaan. Een scenario met verminderde zure depositie toont in het algemeen minder problemen, vooral bij de enkeerdgrond, echter doordat cadmium bij minder zure bodem langzamer uitspoelt kan dit voor een aantal dieren leiden tot verhoogde risico's over een langere periode. Een scenario met kwel tot 20 cm onder maaiveld blijkt nauwelijks effect te hebben., This study represents a survey into whether mobilisation of heavy metals and nutrients can be a restrictive factor for the development of natural areas in the Beerze-Reusel basin. General risks of soil contamination for development of natural areas are first described, followed by calculations for determining risks for two specific soil types in the Beerze-Reusel basin, by means of coupling models on hydrology, acidification, heavy-metal behaviour and bioaccumulation. Considering the uncertainties in the methodology, this study has been explicitly restricted to a survey. Calculations on the risks of the combination of soil contamination (cadmium and copper), acidification (business-as-usual and an improved scenario) and (no) seepage for a meadow turned into a grassland ecosystem showed that ongoing acid atmospheric deposition in combination with soil contamination can lead to problems for the development of the grassland ecosystem. This happens both directly through acidification effects on vegetation and indirectly through effects of cadmium and copper on different species, and on biological functions of the soil. Effects on soil fauna can also lead to accumulation of organic matter, which can finally result in low species diversity. Copper generally caused less risks than cadmium, but due to ongoing increasing copper concentrations in litter and hence in soil fauna, long-term effects can occur. A scenario in which acid deposition was improved usually showed decreased risks for future ecosystems, but showed that this could also cause higher risks for a longer period due to slower leaching. A scenario comprising seepage up to 20 cm below surface showed hardly any differences in risks for development of natural areas.

RIVM rapport:Het doel van deze programmeringsstudie was vast te stellen welke kennis aanwezig is en welk type onderzoek op korte en (middel)lange termijn nodig is om tot een risico-inschatting te komen voor effecten van mobilisatie van nutrienten en contaminanten bij de omzetting van landbouwgrond naar andere functies, zoals bosbouw en natuur. De studie concludeert dat bij herbebossing verzuring en toename in opgelost organisch koolstof (DOC) tot een verhoogde mobiliteit van aluminium en zware metalen kan leiden ; bij vernatting kunnen afname van redoxpotentiaal en verzuring fosfaat en zware metalen mobiliseren. Aanwezigheid van sulfide kan bij vernatting tot verminderde mobiliteit van zware metalen leiden. Bij wisselende grondwaterstanden is het mogelijk dat verzuring tot extra mobilisatie van zware metalen leidt. Verhoogde contaminantmobiliteit kan onder andere leiden tot verminderde decompositie, verhoging van interne concentraties in bodemfauna en doorvergiftiging naar terrestrische fauna. Het risico van organische microverontreinigingen wordt lager ingeschat ; hiernaar is echter nog niet afdoende onderzoek verricht. Voor de voorspelling van de risico's bij natuurontwikkeling wordt koppeling van bestaande modellen noodzakelijk geacht. De studie geeft aanbevelingen voor 'quick and dirty' modelkoppelingen op korte termijn en voor nderzoek naar voorbeeldsystemen op middellange termijn. Voor de lange termijn wordt prioriteit gelegd bij monitoring, procesonderzoek en modelintegratie., The aim of this Programming Study on 'Behaviour of Accumulated Contaminants in relation to Land Use Changes and Recoverability of Ecosystems' was to determine: 1) the available knowledge and 2) the short-, medium- and long-term research, needed to develop a risk assessment for the effects of mobilisation of nutrients and contaminants due to land-use changes from agriculture to nature or forest conservation. The most relevant changes in soil condition, which can take place after afforestation, are concluded to be acidification and increase in dissolved organic carbon. The development of wetlands can lead to decreases in redoxpotential and acidification. These changes in soil condition can result in mobilisation of phosphate and heavy metals. Risks from organic micropollutants are probably lower ; however, as yet not much is known about this. Increased contaminant mobility can lead to a decrease in decomposition, an increase in internal concentrations of toxicants in soil fauna and secondary poisoning of terrestrial fauna. The study also concludes that risk assessment for land-use changes will require integration of existing models. A 'quick-and-dirty' model integration is recommended as a 1 to 2-year research programme, along with research on existing nature-development projects to be used as model systems for medium-term research programmes. For long-term research priority will be given to monitoring, process research and model integration.

RIVM rapport:Uit onderzoek van de afgelopen tien jaar is gebleken dat stikstof- en zuurdepositie de stressgevoeligheid en biodiversiteit van bossen en natuurlijke vegetaties sterk negatief kunnen beinvloeden. De eutrofierende werking van stikstof-depositie speelt daarbij een hoofdrol. De kennis over de ruimtelijke verdeling en kwantiteit van de depositie zijn zodanig verbeterd dat op regionale en nationale schaal redelijk betrouwbare schattingen gemaakt kunnen worden. Ook over de grondwaterverontreiniging kunnen op deze schaal kwantitatieve conclusies getrokken worden. Over de aard en grootte van ecologische effecten is behoorlijk inzicht verkregen, het onderzoek is echter tot nu toe gericht geweest is op een beter begrip van werkingsmechanismen van stikstof. Andere stressfaktoren zoals droogte, vorst, ziekten en plagen zijn in mindere mate in het onderzoek betrokken. Op dit moment is voldoende kennis beschikbaar over stikstof-depositie en -effecten voor onderbouwing van het landelijke (generieke) en regionale beleid. Voor meer specifieke emissie beperkende maatregelen op lokale schaal is het inzicht in de processen en effecten op deze schaal echter beperkt. Dit laat zich vertalen in behoefte aan informatie over temporele en ruimtelijke variatie in emissie, depositie, en gevoeligheid van ecosystemen op lokale schaal. Ook is het van belang betere mogelijkheden te hebben dan nu het geval is om beleidsmaatregelen tegen elkaar af te wegen, zoals bijvoorbeeld bepaling van de noodzaak tot het nemen van lokale maatregelen (wegnemen van piekbelastingen) ten opzichte van regionale of landelijke maatregelen (wegnemen van de achtergrondbelasting) ; of bepaling van maatregelen ten aanzien van verkeer of industrie (NOx) ten opzichte van de landbouw (NH3). Daarvoor is het nodig te beschikken over blootstelling/respons relaties voor de invloed van stikstof-deposities op verschillende natuur-doeltypen, informatie over de mate en snelheid waarmee ecosystemen herstellen bij vermindering van N-dep, Concerns the results of a feasibility study on the realisation of a nitrogen research programme for the local scale. This study, initiated by the Ministries of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment (VROM) and of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries (LNV), was executed by a project group of Dutch scientists to provide an outline of a research programme proposal. It will be based on an inventory of the main policy questions, and on overviews of the state of knowledge of different parts of the nitrogen causal chain, and of the main gaps in knowledge and present research. The end product of the programme should be a set of modules which will enable the assessment of the risk on negative effects on current nature conservation in the Dutch Mainframe of Natural Landscapes (EHS) and the nature conservation target types in the EHS to be realised in the future. The modules represent parts of the causal chain, i.e. emission, dispersion and deposition, effects on different terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and on tree species, groundwater pollution and the marine environment. The research in the programme will focus on refining and validating existing models for the individual elements of the causal chain. Experiments and model development will be focused on better estimating (changes) in key factors necessary to describe the main processes of these elements.

RIVM rapport:The aim of this Programming Study on 'Behaviour of Accumulated Contaminants in relation to Land Use Changes and Recoverability of Ecosystems' was to determine: 1) the available knowledge and 2) the short-, medium- and long-term research, needed to develop a risk assessment for the effects of mobilisation of nutrients and contaminants due to land-use changes from agriculture to nature or forest conservation. The most relevant changes in soil condition, which can take place after afforestation, are concluded to be acidification and increase in dissolved organic carbon. The development of wetlands can lead to decreases in redoxpotential and acidification. These changes in soil condition can result in mobilisation of phosphate and heavy metals. Risks from organic micropollutants are probably lower ; however, as yet not much is known about this. Increased contaminant mobility can lead to a decrease in decomposition, an increase in internal concentrations of toxicants in soil fauna and secondary poisoning of terrestrial fauna. The study also concludes that risk assessment for land-use changes will require integration of existing models. A 'quick-and-dirty' model integration is recommended as a 1 to 2-year research programme, along with research on existing nature-development projects to be used as model systems for medium-term research programmes. For long-term research priority will be given to monitoring, process research and model integration., Het doel van deze programmeringsstudie was vast te stellen welke kennis aanwezig is en welk type onderzoek op korte en (middel)lange termijn nodig is om tot een risico-inschatting te komen voor effecten van mobilisatie van nutrienten en contaminanten bij de omzetting van landbouwgrond naar andere functies, zoals bosbouw en natuur. De studie concludeert dat bij herbebossing verzuring en toename in opgelost organisch koolstof (DOC) tot een verhoogde mobiliteit van aluminium en zware metalen kan leiden ; bij vernatting kunnen afname van redoxpotentiaal en verzuring fosfaat en zware metalen mobiliseren. Aanwezigheid van sulfide kan bij vernatting tot verminderde mobiliteit van zware metalen leiden. Bij wisselende grondwaterstanden is het mogelijk dat verzuring tot extra mobilisatie van zware metalen leidt. Verhoogde contaminantmobiliteit kan onder andere leiden tot verminderde decompositie, verhoging van interne concentraties in bodemfauna en doorvergiftiging naar terrestrische fauna. Het risico van organische microverontreinigingen wordt lager ingeschat ; hiernaar is echter nog niet afdoende onderzoek verricht. Voor de voorspelling van de risico's bij natuurontwikkeling wordt koppeling van bestaande modellen noodzakelijk geacht. De studie geeft aanbevelingen voor 'quick and dirty' modelkoppelingen op korte termijn en voor nderzoek naar voorbeeldsystemen op middellange termijn. Voor de lange termijn wordt prioriteit gelegd bij monitoring, procesonderzoek en modelintegratie.

RIVM rapport:In de landen van de Europese gemeenschap worden door de nationale overheden verscheidene experimenten voorgeschreven om de omzetting en het transport van pesticiden te karakteriseren. Een van deze experimenten, de kolomstudie verouderd residu (Aged Residue Leaching test), wordt uitgevoerd om het risico van uitspoeling van pesticiden en daaruit ontstane metabolieten te beoordelen. Dit rapport geeft een mathematische beschrijving van de dynamische processen die zich voordoen bij dit experiment. Er wordt een interpretatiemethode voorgesteld om de resultaten van de experimenten te vertalen naar stofeigenschappen zoals halfwaardetijd, vormingsfractie en sorptiecoefficient in grond. Deze stofeigenschappen kunnen gebruikt worden om met simulatiemodellen een risicoanalyse uit te voeren onder realistische milieuscenario's. De interpretatiemethode maakt gebruik van het PESTRAS-model, een simulatiemodel dat transport, transformatie, afbraak en sorptie van organische verontreinigingen in de bodem beschrijft. Het model wordt toegepast in de omgekeerde volgorde: de systeemparameters waarin men geinteresseerd is worden afgeleid uit de (gemeten) uitvoervariabelen. Er wordt geconcludeerd dat de nieuwe interpretatiemethode beter geschikt is om de resultaten van de ARL-test te verwerken dan de bestaande methoden. Vooral als aandacht wordt gegeven in het experiment aan documentatie van de experimentele condities en als voldoende metingen worden uitgevoerd kunnen relatief nauwkeurige schattingen worden gemaakt van de parameters., National authorities in European countries prescribe several experiments to assess the transformation and leaching potential of pesticides. One of these experiments, the aged residue leaching test (ARL test), is required to assess the risk of leaching of pesticides and their metabolites to groundwater. This report gives a mathematical description of the dynamic processes occurring during the experiment. An interpretation method is proposed to translate the results of these experiments to compound properties such as half-life, formation fraction, and sorption coefficient in the soil. These data can be used in simulation models to perform risk analysis using realistic environmental scenarios. The interpretation method employs the PESTRAS model, which is a simulation model describing transport, transformation, degradation and sorption of organic contaminants in soil. The model is used in the inverse way: the system parameters of interest are derived from output variables. It is concluded that the newly proposed interpretation method is more suitable to analyze results of ARL tests than the traditional approaches. Especially, if attention is given to the documentation of the experimental conditions and if sufficient measurements are performed, relatively accurate estimates of the parameters of interest can be made.

RIVM rapport:De invloed op bossen van de depositie van zwavel en stikstof, ozon en van op grote schaal onderzocht. Hiertoe zijn een aantal intensieve monitoring studies opgezet en werden modellen van de kringloop van water, nutrienten en assimilaten ontwikkeld. Dit rapport beschrijft de toepassing van het bodemverzuringsmodel NuCSAM, en de geintegreerde modellen SoilVeg en ForGro op het Speulderbos, een Douglas-opstand op een holtpodzol. In dit bos werd van 1987 t/m 1991 een uitgebreide meetcampagne uitgevoerd. De gesimuleerde bodemwatergehalten, concentraties van stoffen in het bodemwater, naaldmassa's, stam-aanwas en nutrientenstatus kwamen redelijk goed overeen met de metingen. De modellen vertoonden echter aanzienlijke onderlinge verschillen op het gebied van grootheden welke niet gemeten konden worden, zoals bosverdamping, drainage, nutrientenopname en mineralisatie. Het gedrag van de geintegreerde modellen werd geverifieerd door toepassing van deze modellen op een irrigatie- en fertigatie experiment op een nabij gelegen Douglas opstand. De modellen konden in het algemeen de effecten van irrigatie en fertigatie op de stam-aanwas redelijk goed voorspellen, maar er waren grote verschillen wat betreft de voorspelde nutrienten status en de stikstof-mineralisatie. De modellen werden vervolgens gebruikt voor scenario analyses voor de periode 1994-2050. Ook hier werden grote verschillen tussen de modellen gevonden voor met name de stikstofkringloop en de nutrienten status (met name het N-gehalte in bladeren). Alle modellen voorspelden dat de concentraties van sulfaat en aluminium in de bodemoplossing snel omlaag gaan na een afname van de verzurende depositie, en dat de concentratie van nitraat een aantal jaren hoog blijft na een afname in de stikstofdepositie. Dit laatste wordt veroorzaakt door opslag van een overmaat aan stikstof in de biomassa en het strooisel. Uit de resultaten van de geintegreerde modellen blijkt verder dat de directe effecten van verhoogde SOx en ozon concent, Large efforts have been dedicated to investigate effects of atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen on trees and soil at the forest stand level. For this purpose intensive monitoring programs and integrated models of the water, carbon and nutrient cycle have been developed. This report describes an application of the nutrient cycling and soil acidification model NuCSAM and the integrated water, carbon and nutrient cycling models SoilVeg and ForGro to the Speuld site, a Douglas fir stand on a Cambic podzol. This site was monitored between 1987 and 1991. The models were parameterized and calibrated for this site. Simulated soil water contents, soil solution chemistry, foliage biomass and nutrient status and stem growth between 1987 and 1991 were comparable with observations. However, the models showed large differences with respect to quantities that could not be measured, such as transpiration, leaching fluxes, root uptake fluxes and mineralization fluxes. The generality of the integrated models was further tested by an approximate simulation of a site irrigation and fertigation experiment at a nearby Douglas fir stand between 1987 and 1991. The direction and magnitude of simulated effects of irrigation and fertigation on stem growth, litter fall and needle nutrient status were generally right, but the observed enhanced nitrogen mineralization could not be simulated. Simulation of site response to three Dutch deposition scenarios between 1994 and 2050 showed large differences between the three models, particularly for nitrogen cycling and foliage nutrient status. Nevertheless, all models indicate a fast response of soil solution chemistry to changing deposition. Both SoilVeg and ForGro indicate that direct effects of elevated ozone and SOx concentrations in the atmosphere, and effects of pH and the Al concentration in the soil solution are subsidiary to effects of drought and nitrogen. RIVM rapport:In het kader van het Additioneel Programma Verzurings-onderzoek werd tien jaar onderzoek uitgevoerd in de Douglas opstand Speulderbos. Het doel van dit onderzoek was het bepalen van de blootstelling en belasting van verzurende en eutrofierende stoffen, en de schadelijke invloed ervan op de vitaliteit van de Douglasbomen en het gehele bos-ecosysteem. Hiervoor werd onderzoek uitgevoerd naar de concentratieniveaus en depositieniveaus van verzurende componenten en ozon ; de boskarakteristieken ; de groei- parameters ; de nutrientenstatus en de effecten van een reduktie van de belastingen met behulp van manipulatie-experimenten. In dit rapport zijn de resultaten van 10 jaar onderzoek gebruikt om de causale verbanden tussen blootstelling en belasting en effecten te bepalen. Hiervoor werden specifiek voor het Speulderbos zogenaamde 'critical levels' en 'critical loads' afgeleid, evenals de ontwikkeling in de overschrijding ervan. Deze overschrijdingen werden vergeleken met de geobserveerde effecten, welke gedefinieerd zijn als ecosysteem-veranderingen als gevolg van milieubelastingen., Within the framework of the Dutch Priority Program on Acidification, 10 years of research was conducted at the Douglas fir Speulder forest. The aim of the combined research was to determine the exposure and loads of acidifying and eutrophying pollutants, as well as their harmful influence on the vitality of Douglas fir trees and the forest ecosystem as a whole. Research was conducted to establish the levels and loads of acidifying pollutants and ozone, to determine forest characteristics and follow growth parameters and nutrient status in time and to determine the effects of reduction of loads and levels by manipulation experiments. In this report the results of 10 years of research are used to assess the causal relation between loads and levels on the one hand and effects on the other. For this, critical levels and critical loads were determined specifically for the Speulder forest, and the evolution of its exceedance was assessed. These exceedances were compared to the observed effects, which are defined as ecosystem changes as a result of environmental impacts.

RIVM rapport:Dose-response functions were fitted on data from laboratory toxicity tests and were used to predict the response of functional groups in food webs. Direct effects of Chlorpyrifos (CPF), as observed in microcosm experiments, could be modelled adequately by incorporating dose-response functions in a CATS model. Indirect effects of CPF on functional groups, resulting from direct toxicity, could be predicted with the model too. The ecosystem response to toxicants was used to propose a quality standard called the Hazardous Concentration for Ecosystems (HCE). The HCE is based on both direct and indirect effects and is reached at a proposed 5% deviation of control biomass. The calculated HCEs for cadmium, Chlorpyrifos and DTDMAC are higher, but within two orders of magnitude of (proposed) Limit Values. The discrepancies are discussed., Dosis-respons functies, uit laboratorium toxiciteitstoetsen, werden gebruikt om het effect van stoffen op voedselwebben te voorspellen. HCE's zijn berekend voor cadmium, CPF, DTDMAC en TBT, en zijn altijd hoger dan huidige Grenswaarden. De betekenis van de HCE wordt besproken.

Emissions of several nitrogen components are given, and the fate and transport of nitrogen through the environment (air, soil, groundwater and surface water) is described. The ecological effects in both terrestric and aquatic ecosystems as well as risks for the public health are evaluated. The implications for the public water supply are discussed.
