Climate-driven changes in ocean temperatures, currents, or plankton dynamics may disrupt pelagic forage fish recruitment. Being responsive to such impacts enables fisheries management to ensure continued sustainable harvest of forage species. We conducted a management strategy evaluation to assess the robustness of current and alternative Pacific sardine harvest control rules under a variety of recruitment scenarios representing potential projections of future climate conditions in the California Current. The current environmentally informed control rule modifies the harvest rate for the northern sardine subpopulation based on average sea surface temperatures measured during California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations field cruises. This rule prioritizes catch at intermediate biomass levels but may increase variability in catch and closure frequency compared to alternative control rules, especially if recruitment is unrelated to ocean temperatures. Fishing at maximum sustainable yield and using dynamically estimated reference points reduced the frequency of biomass falling below 150 000 mt by up to 17%, while using survey index-based biomass estimates resulted in a 14% higher risk of delayed fishery closure during stock declines than when using assessment-based estimates. Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) in the northwest Pacific Ocean (NPO) not only preserve the equilibrium of the NPO food chain, but also serve as a source of nutrition for humans. In order to evaluate the levels of various elements in S. sagax, we collected specimens from NWP waters and ascertained the quantities of four macronutrients, nine essential trace elements, and twelve non-essential trace elements. The factors (fatness, sex, sexual maturity, body length, body weight, and age) influencing the concentration were investigated, and the correlations of trace elements were examined. Additionally, the Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) approach and the Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) methodology were used to assess contamination levels and associated consumption risks. The results revealed that the macronutrient content (54–10,500 mg kg−1) was higher than the necessary trace elements (0–488 mg kg−1) and the non-essential trace elements (0–448 mg kg−1), and most of the elements showed positive correlation with each other. Almost all of the element concentrations were below the maximum permitted levels (MPLs) recommended by the FAO/WHO, except for As and Cd. The factors, including fatness, sexual maturity, body length, body weight, and age, showed a negative correlation with most of the trace elements. The outcomes of the stepwise regression analysis showed that sex and stage of sexual maturation were the principal biological factors influencing elemental content. Catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) standardization in fisheries is a critical foundation for conducting stock assessment and fishery conservation. The Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) is one of the economically important fish species in the Northwest Pacific Ocean (NPO). Hence, the importance of choosing an appropriate CPUE standardization model cannot be overstated when it comes to achieving a precise relative abundance index for the efficient management of Pacific sardine fishery. This study's main aim was to assess and compare the efficacy of three models, specifically the General Linear Model (GLM), the Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM), and the spatio-temporal GLMM (VAST), in the CPUE standardization for Pacific sardine fishery in the NPO, with the ultimate goal of identifying the most appropriate model. An influence analysis was applied to analyze the impact of individual variables on the disparity among standardized and nominal CPUE, and the main explanatory variables influencing standardized CPUE were identified. A coefficient–distribution–influence (CDI) plot was generated to analyze the impact of the different models on the annual standardized CPUE. Additionally, a simulation testing framework was developed to evaluate the estimated accuracy of the three models. The results indicated that the standardized CPUE and the nominal CPUE exhibited similar trends between 2014 and 2021 for the three models. Compared to the GLM and the GLMM, the VAST demonstrates larger conditional R2 and smaller conditional AIC, indicating a better performance in standardizing the CPUE for Pacific sardines due to its consideration of spatial and temporal variations. The interaction terms within the three models exert significant influences on the annual standardized CPUE, necessitating their inclusion in the model construction. CDI plots indicate that the spatio-temporal influence of the VAST model exhibits a smaller variation trend, suggesting that the VAST is more robust when standardizing the CPUE for Pacific sardines. Simulation testing additionally demonstrated that the VAST model displays smaller model root mean squared error (RMSE) and bias, establishing it as the superior performer for standardizing CPUE. Sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll concentration in the North Pacific in 2019–2020 were analyzed based on the data of light net fertilization fisheries, including chlorophyll-a, sea surface height (SSH), and data regarding other environmental factors. The spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of catch per unit effort (CPUE) and its relationship with key environmental factors of Sardinops sagax fishery in the Far East were analyzed by spatial superposition map and frequency analysis, empirical cumulative distribution function, K-S test, and GAM model. The results showed that the geographical fishery center ranges from 147°–153°E and 39°–43°N and moves to the northeast from April to August, returning to the southwest from September to November. According to the frequency analysis and empirical cumulative distribution function, the optimal SST and chlorophyll concentration in the central fishing area were10.0–18.0 ℃ and 0.2–0.6 mg/m3, while the optimal sea level was 0.2–0.7 m. The K-S test showed that high CPUE was closely related to SST, chlorophyll concentration, and sea surface height, and the optimal ranges were 10.9–18.9 ℃, 0.2–0.6 mg/m3, and 0.2–0.7 m, respectively. The GAM model simulation results showed that the optimal SST of high CPUE was 11.0–17.0 ℃, the optimal chlorophyll concentration was 0.3–0.8 mg/m3, and the optimal sea surface height was 0.1–0.4 m. Overall, the results showed that the optimal SST, chlorophyll concentration, and sea surface height were 11.0–18.0 ℃, 0.2–0.6 mg/m3, and 0.2–0.7 m, respectively.

Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) is a commercially important species and supports important fisheries in the Northwest Pacific Ocean (NPO). Understanding the habitat distribution patterns of Pacific sardine is of great significance for fishing ground prediction and stock management. In this study, both single-algorithm and ensemble distribution models were established through the Biomod2 package for Pacific sardine by combining the species occurrence data, sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface height (SSH), sea surface salinity (SSS) and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla) in the NPO during the main fishing season (June–November) from 2015 to 2020. The results indicated that the key environmental variables affecting the habitat distribution of Pacific sardine were the SSH and SST. The suitable habitat area for Pacific sardine showed significant monthly changes: the suitable habitat range in June was larger than that in July and August, while the suitable habitat range gradually increased from September to November. Furthermore, the monthly geometric centers of habitat suitability index (HSI) for Pacific sardine presented a counterclockwise pattern, gradually moving to the northeast from June, and then turning back to the southwest from August. Compared with single-algorithm models, the ensemble model had higher evaluation metric values and better spatial correspondence between habitat prediction and occurrence records data, which indicated that the ensemble model can provide more accurate prediction and is a promising tool for potential habitat forecasting and resource management. Marine ecosystems in southeastern Australia are responding rapidly to climate change. We monitored the diet of the Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus), a key marine predator, over 17 years (1998–2014) to examine temporal changes. Frequency of occurrence (FO) of prey was used as a proxy for ecosystem change. Hard part analysis identified 71 prey taxa, with eight dominant taxa in greater than 70% of samples and predominantly included benthic and small pelagic fish. FO changed over time, e.g. redbait (Emmelichthys nitidus) reduced after 2005 when jack mackerel (Trachurus declivis) increased, and pilchard (Sardinops sajax) increased after 2009. Using generalized additive models, correlations between FO and environmental variables were evident at both the local (e.g. wind, sea surface temperature (SST)) and regional (e.g. El Niño–Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), Southern Annular Mode (SAM)) scales, with redbait and pilchard showing the best model fits (greater than 75% deviance explained). Positive SAM was correlated to FO for both species, and wind and season were important for redbait, while SOI and SST were important for pilchard. Both large-scale and regional processes influenced prey taxa in variable ways. We predict that the diverse and adaptable diet of the Australian fur seal will be advantageous in a rapidly changing ecosystem.

Otolith analysis allows studying multiple aspects of fish biology, including age estimation; however, otoliths collected from avian stomach content have not been used to estimate the age of ingested fish. We evaluated the potential ability to estimate the age of Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) from otoliths collected from blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) stomach contents sampled in the Galapagos Islands. Blue-footed boobies were selected because they mostly forage close to their colony (<100 m) and were, therefore, more likely to have almost intact otoliths. To estimate age, we employed three previously developed methods for otoliths. We then related these estimates to the fish's standard length and compared these relations statistically using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) to determine which method was most parsimonious. We collected 32 otoliths in relatively good condition, of which we aged 31 with the surface-reading method, 26 with the otolith weight method, and 29 with the posterior otolith length method. Average ages obtained with the otolith methods were 5.6 ± 1.7 yr (± standard deviation), 5.7 ± 2.0 yr, and 3.9 ± 1.5 yr, respectively. Estimates obtained with the otolith weight method had the highest correlation with standard length and the lowest AIC values of the three suggesting it was the best method for aging. Our results indicate that aging otoliths extracted from bird stomachs are possible; however, their use depends on the availability of previously developed methods and how digested the fish are when the birds return to the colony. The article discusses the challenges faced by California brown pelicans, a subspecies that has experienced nesting failures and starvation due to the overfishing of Pacific sardines. The proposed solution, called the "Aviary," aims to repurpose decommissioned offshore oil infrastructures as nesting grounds for the pelicans, providing them with a safe habitat and addressing their declining population.

The ingestion of plastic debris has been studied in many marine fish species, although comparisons between species can be difficult due to factors thought to influence ingestion rates, such as habitat preference, feeding behaviours and trophic level. Sardines are found internationally in many coastal environments and represent a potential sentinel species for monitoring and comparing marine plastic exposure rates. We conducted a pilot study, examining the rate of plastic ingestion in 27 commercially caught sardines (Sardinops sagax) from a low populated coastal region of Western Australia. A total of 251 potentially anthropogenic particles were extracted by chemical digestion of the gastrointestinal tract and classified visually. Fibres were the dominant type of material recovered (82.9%), with both yellow (39.8%) and black (32.7%) coloured particles commonly observed. A subset of 64 particles (25.5%), were subject to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to identify polymer composition. This chemical characterisation identified seven plastic items (polypropylene, nylon and polyethylene) and a variety of cellulose-based material that was further examined and classified as natural or semi-synthetic. The mean plastic ingestion rate was 0.3 ± 0.4 particles per fish, suggesting Western Australian sardines ingest relatively low concentrations of plastic when compared to international sardine populations examined using similar methodologies. Despite comparatively low concentrations, plastic and semi-synthetic material are still being ingested by sardines from a low populated coastal region demonstrating the ubiquitous nature of the marine debris problem.

Pacific sardine Sardinops sagax (Jenyns, 1842), a sardine species that widely distributes in Pacific, is an important commercial species in many areas. In this study, we characterized the complete mitochondrial genome of S. sagax using next generation sequencing technology. The complete mitogenome of S. sagax was 16,883 base pairs (bp) in length and comprised 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNA), and one control region (D-loop). Phylogenetic analysis indicated that sardine species included three clades (I, II and III) and S. sagax clustered with Sardinops melanostictus.

This dissertation examines spawning behavior and habitat in Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) and northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) in the Southern California Bight (SCB). The fine-scale horizontal and vertical distributions of anchovy and sardine eggs are characterized and their potentials for interaction with the predator Euphausia pacifica are assessed under varying environmental conditions.In Chapter 2, fine-scale horizontal pattern of sardine and anchovy eggs is characterized. Variograms for anchovy eggs have a higher nugget effect than those for sardine eggs, indicating that spatial structure of the distribution of sardine eggs is better resolved at the scales sampled. In light of other spatial studies of eggs of Sardinops sagax and Engraulis spp., I propose that the pattern is a function of species­ specific life history, population size and age structure, spawning intensity, and physical scales of the spawning habitat.Chapter 3 presents a model for vertical distribution of anchovy and sardine eggs, based on vertical mixing and ascent velocities of the eggs. The vertical mixing model that best predicts observed vertical distributions of anchovy eggs is different than that for sardine, and addition of a random error term to the terminal ascent velocity affects predictions of anchovy eggs, but not sardine eggs. Observed vertical distributions of sardine eggs are highly variable, perhaps due to horizontal patchiness or true vertical variability. The model does not improve prediction of integrated abundances from samples at 3-m depth over a simple regression of 3-m on integrated abundances.In Chapter 4, distributions of sardine and anchovy eggs and adult and juvenile Euphausia pacifica, an abundant euphausiid predator on ichthyoplankton, are examined in geographic and T-S space in the SCB for 1953-1959 and 1995-2002. Variability in the relative distributions of the three species shows concordance with environmental change. Occurrence of significantly complementary distributions of anchovy eggs and E. pacifica provides supporting evidence for interaction between anchovy and euphausiids.Spatial pattern in sardine and anchovy eggs is shown to be relevant to relationships between spawning behavior, spawning habitat, and population size. The potential importance of the dominant euphausiid species in influencing recruitment and spawning habitat selection is also supported.

During austral winter, the southern and eastern coastlines of South Africa witness one of the largest animal migrations on the planet, the KwaZulu-Natal sardine run. Hundreds of millions of temperate sardines, Sardinops sagax, form large shoals that migrate north-east towards the subtropical Indian Ocean. Recent studies have highlighted the role that genetic and environmental factors play in sardine run formation. In the present study, we used massively parallel sequencing to assemble and annotate the first reference transcriptome from the liver cells of South African sardines, and to investigate the functional content and transcriptomic diversity. A total of 1,310,530 transcripts with an N50 of 1578 bp were assembled de novo. Several genes and core biochemical pathways that modulate energy production, energy storage, digestion, secretory processes, immune responses, signaling, regulatory processes, and detoxification were identified. The functional content of the liver transcriptome from six individuals that participated in the 2019 sardine run demonstrated heterogeneous levels of variation. Data presented in the current study provide new insights into the complex function of the liver transcriptome in South African sardines.

Spatial variability in phenotypic characteristics within a fish population may be used to infer the existence of multiple stocks, and knowledge of the population structure of exploited species is important for their sustainable management. In this study we investigated geographic variability in meristic (vertebral count) and morphometric (body shape) characteristics of sardine Sardinops sagax from three southern African regions: Namibia, the South African west coast, and the South African south coast. There were significant regional differences in vertebral counts, with Namibian fish tending to have more vertebrae than South African fish, but with no difference between sardine off the South African west and south coasts. Body shape was characterised using morphometric landmarks, and shape changes were investigated using geometric morphometrics, with influences on fish shape assessed using multivariate regressions. To remove the effects of allometry, the 22 shape variables (represented by Procrustes coordinates) were regressed against fish size (represented by centroid size). There was a significant allometric effect, which was removed by using the residuals of these regressions in further analyses. A multivariate multiple regression was applied to the 22 size-corrected shape variables and to three covariates: condition factor, stomach fullness and fat stage. The significant influence of these covariates was removed by using the residuals from this regression in a canonical variate analysis, where corrected shape variables were classified in relation to region, year and sex. The Mahalanobis distances from the canonical variate analysis differed significantly for most combinations of classifier variables, with clear separations among the three regions. Sardinops sagax off Namibia had thicker bodies and more contracted tail regions than South African fish, whereas S. sagax off the South African south coast had thinner bodies and smaller heads than those off the west coast. Stock level of Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) was high from 1980s to early 1990s and low from late 1990s to 2000s. The warm and cold water masses in the vicinity of the Kuroshio axis from winter to early spring used to be critical for the recruitment in the high‐stock period, because most of the larvae were distributed there. However, the environmental fluctuation might not affect the recruitment in the low‐stock period. Some studies reported that spawning location and spawning season, and hence the larval habitat, differ depending on the stock level. Three points were investigated in this study: (a) how spawning location and spawning season shifted from the late 1990s, (b) confirmation of the distribution area of larvae in the recent low‐stock period and (c) whether the water temperature in the vicinity of the Kuroshio axis was still related to the recruitment in the low‐stock period. The spawning location and spawning season clearly changed after 1995. Consequently, particle tracking experiments suggested that the larvae appeared in the vicinity of the Kuroshio axis from winter to early spring decreased. Nevertheless, only the ambient temperature of larvae that appeared in the vicinity of the Kuroshio axis from winter had a significant negative correlation with an index of the recruitment in the low‐stock period. It is suggested that the warm and cold masses in the vicinity of the Kuroshio axis are critical for the recruitment regardless of the stock level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies have suggested that sardine, Sardinops sagax, off eastern Australia spawns across its entire range when habitat conditions are suitable. However, recent studies have suggested that separate sub‐populations and spawning groups may occur in the region. Spawning patterns off eastern Australia were investigated using data collected during nine ichthyoplankton surveys conducted between 1997–2015, and adult reproductive data obtained from ad hoc commercial sampling off New South Wales (NSW). The egg surveys covered the known distribution of sardine off eastern Australia and included year‐round sampling in the northern and southern parts of this range. Egg distributions and analysis of gonadosomatic indices identified two spatio‐temporally separate spawning groups; one occurring off southern Queensland to northern NSW during late winter and early spring, and a smaller group off eastern Tasmania to southern NSW during summer. Most eggs were collected from waters 50–90 m deep, with sea surface temperatures of 18–23°C. Additive modelling indicated depth was the most significant factor driving selection of spawning habitat, followed by the interaction of month and latitude. Low egg densities were recorded in waters between 34–37°S, despite conditions within the ranges suitable for spawning. The presence of two spawning groups of sardine off eastern Australia supports recent findings that two sub‐populations occur in the region. Findings of this study will help to optimise the spatio‐temporal extent of future egg surveys and further confirm the need to coordinate future management of each sub‐population among relevant jurisdictions. Abstract Small pelagic fishes such as sardine and anchovy play an important role in marine ecosystem and are affected largely by environmental changes because of their character as r-strategists and their low trophic levels. Small pelagic fishes are crucial targets of Chinese fisheries, accounting for 26% of the total catch in 2014. Their catches show an increasing trend since the 1950s. However, there is still little information on small pelagic species inhabiting Chinese waters. Catch trends and impacts of climatic regime shifts for six typical commercially important small pelagic species, chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus), Japanese scad (Decapterus maruadsi), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi), Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) and horse mackerel (Trachurus japonicus), are analyzed using Chinese Fishery Statistics, FAO data, climatic indices and sea surface temperature (SST) data. The aim is to explore the interannual to decadal variability of their catches in China Seas and their responses to climatic regime shifts. Decadal variability is evident in the catches of the six small pelagic fishes with different variation patterns between warm- and cold-water species. Step changes in catches of the six species were observed in 1976/77, 1986/87, 1995/96, 2001/02 and 2005/06, while regime shifts in climatic/SST indices occurred around 1976/77, the late 1980s and the mid-1990s. This indicates that decadal variations in small pelagic fishes respond strongly to the climatic regime shifts, and the different response patterns of warm- and cold-water species reflect their different life strategies. Marine thermal variation patterns during the period 1981–2000 were well explained by different phase changes in the SSTs between summer and winter and were consistent with the step change in the catches of small pelagic fishes. The double-integration hypothesis, which indicates that cumulative integrations of atmospheric forcing can generate marine population responses, is useful both to understand the process from climate forcing to fish and the controlling mechanism of climate variability on small pelagic fishes in China Seas. Abstract Small-pelagic fishes are economically and ecologically important as they make up a large proportion of wild-caught fisheries and provide an important link between planktonic organisms and higher trophic level organisms such as piscivorous fishes, squid, seabirds and marine mammals. In the California Current Ecosystem (CCE), the distribution and abundance of Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) is influenced by both natural climate variability and exploitation. This study uses Generalized Additive Models to evaluate the effects of environmental forcing at multiple spatial scales (i.e. local, regional and basin) on sardine catch recorded at British Columbia (CAN), California (USA) and Bahía Magdalena (MEX). We find that the Pacific Circulation Index, sea surface temperature, upwelling strength, and primary productivity were the most influential factors explaining variability of sardine catch in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. Our CCE-wide analysis shows that regional scale environmental variability best explained catch rates of the Pacific sardine for California and Bahía Magdalena while basin-scale environmental variability did so for catch rates for British Columbia. Some studies have characterized and evaluated the parasitic load of the Pacific sardine. However, there are few studies related to its physiology and parasites load. This study aimed to evaluate the blood parameters and the abundance of helminth parasites of sardines obtained from two samples from Todos Santos Bay during autumn 2013. The digenea Myosaccium ecaude parasite was the only species registered. Sardines had a prevalence of 28%, an average abundance of 25 and an intensity of 7 parasites. There were no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05) in most of the analyzed blood parameters (red blood cell count, hematocrit, leukocyte cellular differentiation, mean corpuscular volume, total protein, glucose, alanine aminotransferase, osmotic pressure, Na, K, and pH) of fish with and without parasites, except in white blood cell count and in Ca concentration that showed a marked decrease. Abstract: To evaluate the impact of temporal variation of primary productivity on the recruitment of Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) in the Sea of Japan, the phenology of sea surface phytoplankton abundance was estimated from 8 day multiple satellite (SeaWiFS, MODIS‐Aqua, MERIS, and VIIRS) derived sea surface chlorophyll (SSChl) a concentrations from January 1998 to December 2015. Because relationships between SSChl a and in situ chlorophyll a concentrations were significantly different among periods based on the satellite combinations used, maximum and minimum SSChl a concentrations of 1 year were relativized as 1 and 0, respectively. Spatio‐temporal variation of relativized SSChl a concentrations was determined by using empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Scores in the first EOF mode denoted the basin‐scale variations of SSChl a concentrations in the Sea of Japan, and the major peak from the end of February to the end of May displayed the spring bloom. The logarithm of recruitment per spawner (LNRPS) for sardine was positively affected by delays in the start and end dates of the spring phytoplankton bloom. The delay of the date of the lowest sea surface temperature contributed to the delay of the end of the spring bloom during the period 1998–2015 and elevated the LNRPS during the period 1982–2015. Sardine spawns in the southern Sea of Japan from April to May, hence, delays of the spring bloom prolonged its overlap with sardine larval periods, and thus improved the recruitment of Japanese sardine in the Sea of Japan. The spectral absorbance of photoreceptor visual pigments and the opsin gene class of the visual pigments was investigated in Sardinops melanostictus . Microspectrophotometric (MSP) measurements showed that the rod photoreceptors had peak absorbance spectra (λ max ) at 502 nm. The spectral sensitivity of single cones was centered at 393 nm. Double cones had a λ max of 493/522 nm, but a few displayed a red-shifted absorbance of the long-wave member at 542 nm. The mRNAs of six different opsins were isolated from the retina, retrotranscribed, cloned, and sequenced. Three genes encoded opsins in the green-sensitive class (RH2), and three genes encoded opsins in the red-sensitive class (LWS), the ultraviolet (UV)-sensitive (SWS1) class, and the rod class (RH1). A Southern blot analysis showed that the blue-sensitive (SWS2) opsin gene is absent from this species, hence it was concluded that the λ max of 393 nm was generated from the SWS1 opsin. Phylogenetic analyses of S . melanostictus RH1, LWS, and SWS1 sequences placed them with orthologs from other species (e.g., the cyprinids Danio rerio and Carrasius auratus ) in Otomorpha. However, unexpectedly, the RH2 sequences were more similar to orthologs in members of the Euteleosteomorpha (e.g., Oryzias latipes and Takifugu rubripes ) than to cyprinid RH2 opsins. A number of ecologically and economically important species in the southern Benguela, including the forage fish sardine Sardinops sagax and anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, have undergone southward/eastward shifts in their distribution in the 1990s/early 2000s. In addition to the effects of changes in prey availability to top predators, the spatially-distinct nature of the system means the location of a stock has implications for its productivity. The spatial dynamics of small pelagic fish are of particular importance because they are thought to exert wasp-waisted trophic control on the system. An objective-driven frame-based model was constructed to investigate the ability of the approach to represent spatial and population dynamics of sardine and anchovy, and to explore the implications of possible management strategies. Climate variability and fishing pressure were assumed as drivers. Sensitivity analyses were performed and a number of scenarios tested. A frame-based approach appears to be useful within this context. Results suggest that the productivity of the sardine resource within the model is highly dependent on the spatial characteristics of fishing pressure. The role of anchovy within the model system has not yet been fully developed. Increasing our understanding of the relative suitability of environmental conditions of different regions is also important if we are to increase our capacity to predict trends in abundance and distribution. In the thermal range of the Pacific waters, known for the geographical distribution of Sardinops sagax caeruleus (Jenyns, 1842) (Pacific sardine), could be exposed to a stressing temperature environment with dilated effect. This work examines the liver and kidney of sardines acclimated at different temperatures and exposed to the lethal temperature and critical thermal maximum trials. The liver and kidney tissues of Sardinops sagax caeruleus acclimated for 25 days at 19, 21, 23 and 25 °C were anatomically examined after exposure to acute heat stress (AHS) caused by increasing the water temperature at a rate of 1 °C per min, and the chronic heat stress (CHS) effect by abruptly exposure to constant water temperature different from that of acclimation (AT). We observed in fish exposed to AHS that the liver tissue had vacuolated or necrotic hepatocytes and infiltration of inflammatory blood cells (25 °C) and the kidney tissue showed degenerative changes in the glomeruli and renal tubules and increased melanomacrophage centers. The CHS effect in liver and renal tissues produced damage signs of pyknosis, apoptosis, necrotic areas, and an increase in melanomacrophage centers as well as outbreaks of bacterial infection. The results demonstrate that S. sagax caeruleus did not tolerate an abrupt thermal change of more than 4 °C, independently of the ATs, over 50% died. The consequences of the experimental acute and chronic thermal stress were histopathological alterations of liver and kidney. We investigated the environmental drivers of larval abundance of anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus and sardine Sardinops sagax in Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape (South Africa). This study comprised a pre-drought post-drought time period, comparing the responses of the fish larvae to different factors before and after the drought. The current study presents, for the first time, which environmental variables are affecting the anchovy and sardine larvae populations in the region. Easterly wind speed and zooplankton density were the only environmental variables that presented a significant change between the pre- and post-drought periods, increasing after the drought. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were used in order to explore the effects that environmental factors might have in the abundance of anchovy and sardine larvae in Algoa Bay. Specifically, the GAM that best explained the deviance of the anchovy larvae dynamics included the covariates rainfall, easterly wind speed, Chl a concentration, sardine larvae abundance and the interactions SST*Chla and sard*SST. The GAM best explaining sardine larvae abundance included only the easterly wind speed as a covariate. Purse-seine vessels commonly interact with dolphins. The total number of dolphins accidentally killed in the world's purse-seine fisheries may be substantial, even if interaction rates are generally low. This paper describes an industry Code of Practice (CoP) that was established in Australian purse-seine fishery after an observer program detected high dolphin interaction rates that had not been reported in fishery logbooks. Key features of the CoP are search and delay procedures designed to prevent encirclements and release procedures that minimise mortalities. Extrapolation from observer data (3.9% of net sets observed), suggested that 449 dolphin encirclements and 423 mortalities occurred in 2004-05, the year before the CoP was established. A decade later, observer data suggest that annual encirclements and mortalities had been reduced by 87% and 97%, respectively. Searches were highly effective in detecting the presence of dolphins. Dolphins were not encircled in > 85% of net-sets made after searches determined that dolphins were absent from the fishing area. Opening the front of the net resulted in the successful release of all dolphins in > 86% of encirclement events. Discrepancies between interaction rates estimated from observer data and those recorded in logbooks have decreased over time. This study demonstrated that codes of practice that specify changes in fisher behaviour can be effective in mitigating the interactions of purse-seine fisheries with dolphins. The avoidance and release procedures documented in the CoP for the South Australian sardine fishery are simple and, if adopted in other purse-seine fisheries, could substantially reduce global mortality of dolphins. Differences in parasite infection have previously been used to distinguish between fish stocks. We demonstrate a novel use of parasite prevalence-by-length data to inform quantitatively on stock mixing. An initial two mixing stock hypothesis proved consistent with biological and survey data, suggesting that there are different stocks of sardine off the west and south coasts of South Africa. That hypothesis assumed that only recruits moved from the west to the south stock. However, new 'tetracotyle'-type metacercarian parasite bio-tag data indicate a need to allow older fish to move between the stocks as well. We demonstrate extension of bio-tagging to inform on the plausibility of population structure hypotheses by including parasite prevalence-by-length data in the model's likelihood. Our method enables the estimation of the magnitude of mixing between semidiscrete stocks, providing more precise estimates of annual movement. Such improved precision may be important in better informing future movement hypotheses and thereby management. The North Pacific spiny dogfish (SPD), Squalus suckleyi, is a commercially exploited shark species that plays an important role in the ecosystem. To elucidate the distribution of the SPD in the North Pacific and to evaluate the effects of sea surface temperature (SST) and prey availability on its distribution, we estimated the probability of SPD presence using a generalized additive model with a binomial error distribution from SPD presence/absence data on 14,824 operations in fisheryindependent gillnet surveys between 1972 and 2011. The habitat model was structured in the east and west to reflect differences in the North Pacific oceanic environments. In the east, a higher probability of SPD presence was identified along the coast from the eastern Gulf of Alaska to Queen Charlotte Sound. In the west, it was identified around northern Japan. The estimated distribution was continuous between the two areas, whereas the probability of SPD presence was relatively low. Although the probability of SPD presence was higher at SSTs between 6°C and 12°C, the SST at the peak probability of SPD presence differed between the west and east. The prey species, Japanese sardine, Sardinops melanostictus, and walleye pollock, Gadus chalcogrammus, in the west and boreal clubhook squid, Onychoteuthis borealijaponica, in the east significantly affected the probability of SPD presence, which was higher if the prey species co-existed with SPD. Therefore, SPD might adapt their distribution to that of available prey species. SPD stock assessment and management in these two important areas are required for its sustainable utilization. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are adjusted to predict monthly landings of anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and sardine (Sardinops sagax) in northern Chile (18°21'-24°00'S). Fishing effort (FE), landings and twelve environmental variables are considered from 1980 to 2012. External validation for the best models using all variables showed an R2 of 95% for anchovy and 99% for sardine, with an efficiency of 0.94 and 0.96, respectively. The models were simplified by considering only FE and sea surface temperature (SST) from NOAA satellites (SST-NOAA). Using these variables, very similar fits were achieved, comparing with the previous models, maintaining their predictive capacity. Downscaled SST for A2 climate change scenario (2015-2065) obtained by statistical regionalization from the Community Climate System Model (CCSM3) from National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and three FE scenarios (2010-2012 average, + 50% and - 50%), were used as inputs for ANN simplified models. For A2 future climate change scenario (2015-2065) using 2010-2012 average FE as inputs, anchovy and sardine landings would increase 2.8% and 19.2% by 2065 respectively. Recovery of valuable compounds from by-products generated from seafood processing represents an opportunity to produce value-added products. Sardine acidic proteases were immobilized on partially deacetylated chitin through ionic linkages, using sodium tripolyphosphate as a support activating agent. Maximal enzyme activities of free and immobilized proteases were detected at pH 2, at which the immobilized form had higher stability than the free enzymes. Optimum temperatures for free and immobilized proteases were 40 and 50C, respectively, while thermal stability of immobilized proteases was greater than that of free proteases. Reusability studies showed that after a second catalytic cycle, the immobilized enzyme maintained about 40% of the initial activity. The immobilization process enhanced the long term storage stability of sardine proteases compared to free enzymes. Results suggest that the immobilized enzyme could be used as a biotechnological aid for food processing when low pH and temperature around 50C are needed. Practical Applications Fish waste constitutes a serious environmental problem due to high disposal costs. Besides, this waste is commonly discarded or used for low value processes. Therefore, this study proposes the immobilization of sardine ( Sardinops sagax caerulea) acidic proteases from fish viscera waste, on a partially deacetylated chitin support extracted from shrimp ( Penaeus spp.) head. This research suggests that seafood protease immobilization onto chitinous supports presents an opportunity to improve the stability of these enzymes and consequently enhance potential application of these valuable biocatalysts as biotechnological aid, mainly for food processing and other value added products. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) occurrence and assessment of dietary exposure from imported canned sardines ( Sardinops sagax ) commercially marketed in local stores and supermarkets in Nigeria were evaluated for the first time. PAHs determinations were performed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (Agilent 1290 model) equipped with UV-VIS diodes array detector (DAD) at λ = 210 nm and 214 nm. The percentage recoveries were higher than 96%. The degree of contamination expressed as total concentration of PAH congeners ranged between 2.53 and 35.55 μg kg −1 dry weight (d.w.) at λ = 210 nm, and 1.30 and 27.93 μg kg −1 (d.w.) at λ = 214 nm. The carcinogenic (TEQ BaP ) and mutagenic toxicities (MEQ BaP ) of eight priority PAHs were evaluated. Benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene and indeno[1,2,3-c,d] pyrene contributed significantly to the total carcinogenic equivalents of PAHs. The mutagenic equivalents were largely dominated by chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene equivalence factors. The estimated lifetime average daily dose (LADD), average annual excess risk (A R ), excess cancer rate (ECR), and hazard quotient risk (HQ) were evaluated for adults, children and preteens exposure related risks. The “northern” stock of Pacific SardineSardinops sagaxis fished by Mexico, the USA, and Canada. Without an international management agreement, the U.S. Pacific Fishery Management Council prorates its target total fishing fraction (F) in its harvest control rule (HCR) by 0.87. This is the proportion of the stock that it deemed in 1998 to be present, on average, during summer–fall 1964–1992 in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. However, the portion of the stock in U.S. waters is variable, depending on the environment and stock biomass and demographics. Furthermore, irrespective of the stock distribution, the combined foreign and U.S. landings may exceed those determined by anFof 0.15, potentially reducing the stock biomass and yield. This occurred each year during 2001–2014, and theF(mean = 0.22; SD = 0.06) trended upward. To more consistently approximate the targetF, a method was proposed to set harvest quotas with accounting for predicted foreign landings. We refined the method by adding a prediction error term and showed that the U.S. HCR, solved with predicted foreign landings and stock biomass from each annual assessment in 2001–2014, better stabilizedFabout the targetFrelative to the historical values (original method: mean = 0.16, SD = 0.02; new method: mean = 0.16, SD = 0.05). We also compared the historicalF(mean = 0.18, SD = 0.07) and optimizedF(original method: mean = 0.16, SD = 0.06; new method: mean = 0.17, SD = 0.08) calculated using updated biomass estimates from the 2013 assessment. A full-length complementary (c) DNA encoding ultraviolet ( UV)-sensitive opsin ( sws1) was isolated from the retina of the Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus. The sws1 phylogenetic tree showed a sister group relationship with the Cypriniformes, following the ray-finned fish phylogeny. By expressing reconstituted opsin in vitro, it was determined that the maximum absorbance spectrum ( λmax) of sws1 is around 382 nm, being intermediate in position between two subtypes of sws1 pigment that are UV sensitive ( λmax = 355-380 nm) and violet sensitive ( λmax = 388-455 nm), which have been reported to date. The ocular media transmitted >20% transmittance of light in the range of 360-600 nm. In situ hybridization analyses revealed that sws1 messenger (m) RNA is localized in a central single cone surrounded by four double cones in a square mosaic. The square mosaic occupies the ventro-temporal quadrant of the retina and the in situ hybridization signals were dominant in this area suggesting that the fish may use UV vision when looking upward. The stock structure of small pelagic fishes is difficult to determine due to their patchy distribution and complex movement patterns. We integrate genetic, morphological, otolith, growth, reproductive and fishery data collected over 60 years using a Stock Differentiation Index (SDI). The absence of strong separation (SDI > 0.66) of most adjacent sub-groups supports the hypothesis that sardine ( Sardinops sagax) in Australian waters is a meta-population, but with effective isolation of at least four stocks: south western coast (off Western Australia); Great Australian Bight and Spencer Gulf; Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay (off Victoria and Tasmania); and eastern Australia. There is also evidence for sub-division of the stocks off Western Australia and the east coast. We examine age-related and inter-annual patterns of stock structure off South Australia and the east coast through integrated analysis of otolith chemistry and shape data. For the east coast, there were significant differences between northern and southern sub-groups for all three age cohorts examined. Fish were correctly classified to sampling region with a high degree of success (>80%), supporting the sub-division of the east coast stock suggested by the SDI. For South Australia, there were significant differences among two sub-groups for most cohorts examined across two sampling years. However, spatial discriminatory power was poor, with allocation success ranging from 48 to 64%. Results suggest that movements between the two South Australian sub-groups may vary among years, which is consistent with inconclusive SDI (0.5). Integrating historical data using a SDI is suitable for identifying fishery management units. Integrated analysis of otoliths from archival collections is useful for examining temporal variability in stock structure, which is also important for fisheries management. Populations of small pelagic fish are strongly influenced by climate. The inability of managers to anticipate environment-driven fluctuations in stock productivity or distribution can lead to overfishing and stock collapses, inflexible management regulations inducing shifts in the functional response to human predators, lost opportunities to harvest populations, bankruptcies in the fishing industry, and loss of resilience in the human food supply. Recent advances in dynamical global climate prediction systems allow for sea surface temperature ( SST) anomaly predictions at a seasonal scale over many shelf ecosystems. Here we assess the utility of SST predictions at this 'fishery relevant' scale to inform management, using Pacific sardine as a case study. The value of SST anomaly predictions to management was quantified under four harvest guidelines ( HGs) differing in their level of integration of SST data and predictions. The HG that incorporated stock biomass forecasts informed by skillful SST predictions led to increases in stock biomass and yield, and reductions in the probability of yield and biomass falling below socioeconomic or ecologically acceptable levels. However, to mitigate the risk of collapse in the event of an erroneous forecast, it was important to combine such forecast-informed harvest controls with additional harvest restrictions at low biomass. Schools of fish can cause interference for long-range active sonars. The degree of interference depends heavily on the target strengths of the schools. However, there are few measurements and limited modeling of school target strengths in the frequency ranges of these sonars. During the summers of 2009 through 2013, a comprehensive set of measurements of the characteristics of Pacific sardine schools was collected off the west coast of the United States. This data set has enabled model estimates of the target strength distributions of these schools to be made at frequencies between 500 Hz and 10 kHz. This paper describes the sardine school data, its use in the modeling, the modeling procedures, and the target strength distributions obtained. The analysis indicates that, given the rates at which high target strengths occurred at all frequencies of interest, Pacific sardine schools could be a significant source of interference for long-range active sonars operating in their vicinity. Analysis of fish movements has been an important area of study for fisheries ecology and population dynamics for decades. Pacific sardine, Sardinops sagax, along the west coast of the United States exhibit a well-defined large-scale seasonal migration. Larger and older fish are found in the northern reaches of their range during summer and contract to southerly offshore areas for spawning during spring. Because of the close correlation between fish size and age it has not yet been determined if movements are size- or age-based. Measuring spatial changes in the age structure conditioned on individual lengths was used to determine the roles of age versus length in the seasonal migration. S. sagax have a pattern of increasing age-at-length with seasonal northward movements and offshore movements for spawning. The pattern of increasing age-at-length with distance from the origin eliminates a solely length-based process of movement and supports age-based movement. Patterns in the size and age when fish first show migratory behaviors, coupled with the patterns observed during the spawning season, support a hypothesis that migratory behaviors are linked to age-based ontogenetic changes associated with maturation. Response surface methodology was employed to optimize the immobilization yield of acidic proteases from Monterey sardine (Sardinops sagax caeurelea) using partially deacetylated chitin as immobilization support. A rotatable central composite design was applied to evaluate the effects of immobilization conditions such as enzyme loading (X1), immobilization pH (X2), and tripolyphosphate concentration (X3) on the immobilization yield. The analysis of variance revealed that the established model was significant (p <0.05), and the adjustment of the quadratic model with the experimental data was satisfactory. Under optimal conditions (X1= 0.05 mg/mL,X2= 3.16, andX3= 0.75%), an immobilization yield of 79.1% was achieved; a value that was in accordance with the predicted one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An ecosystem approach to forage fish management is required because forage fish support large fisheries, are prey for many valued species in marine food webs, and provide important social and cultural benefits to humans. Complex ecosystem models are often used to evaluate potential ecosystem consequences of forage fish fisheries, but there is seldom sufficient data to parameterize them, and full consideration of uncertainty is impossible. Models of Intermediate Complexity for Ecosystem assessment (MICE) provide a link between full ecosystem models and tactical (usually single-species) models typically used in fisheries management. MICE are ideal tools to form the basis for management strategy evaluations that compare the ability of candidate strategies to achieve goals related to target fisheries and broader ecosystem protection objectives. A MICE model is developed for the California Current Ecosystem (CCE) that focuses on the fishery for the northern subpopulation of Pacific sardine ( Sardinops sajax ) and the indirect impacts of the fishery on place-based predators, in particular brown pelicans ( Pelecanus occidentalis ) and California sea lions ( Zalophus californianus ), in the Southern California Bight. The model includes three forage species (sardine, northern anchovy Engraulis mordax , and ‘other forage’), an ‘other prey’ category, and two predator species (brown pelican and California sea lion) and evaluates the impacts of variable forage availability on adult predator reproductive success and survival. Parameterization of the model is based on available monitoring data and assessment outputs. The model is used to assess the ecosystem and fishery consequences of the current sardine management systems for Mexico, the USA, and Canada, with a focus on identifying which among a long list of sources of uncertainty in the system are most consequential for predictions of fishery impacts on predators. Key sources of uncertainty to consider in ecosystem assessments for the CCE are how prey abundance and availability impact predator demography and the extent to which the dynamics of prey populations are driven by environmental factors. Data are available for some of these sources of uncertainty for CCE sardine management, but much uncertainty remains, necessitating exploration of sensitivity to alternative model formulations and parameter values when providing advice on management strategies to decision makers.
