The article discusses the preservation of California state trial court records by the Stanford University Law School Library. The author begins by examining problems associated with records management, and notes how the California Judicial Council alleviated some of those problems by providing for the electronic creation and preservation of trial court records. She notes interstate differences in the institutional collection of such records, and explains the development of the right to collect within California as it pertains to non-governmental organizations. After outlining the Stanford Law Library Collection, the author utilizes its trial court records to explain a historic legal dispute between California oyster farming companies.
