Public transport contributes significantly to the development of socioeconomic activities and the long-term sustainability of all communities worldwide. Undoubtedly, it is a catalyst for maximizing quality urban living, social service accessibility, and environmental balance. Despite its considerable importance and benefits, public transport in Nigeria is still poorly practiced, and plagued by complex operational challenges. Based on this context, we assessed the public transport systems in Ikeja-Lagos, Abeokuta, and Ibadan cities to understand the struggle for sustainability in Nigeria. This study examined the socioeconomic and travel characteristics of passengers, the availability and condition of public transport infrastructural facilities, peculiar public transport challenges, and the best possible strategies to sustain public transport systems in Nigeria. The study employed a cross-sectional survey research design, while a multistage sampling technique was utilized to administer a wellvalidated questionnaire on the passengers at central transport nodes within the selected cities using both descriptive and inferential analysis. The results show that most of the respondents are men and spend more than 10% of their monthly income on public transport usage. Findings show that conventional public transport has been proven unpopular in Ibadan and Abeokuta cities compared to a chaotic and inadequate bus rapid system in IkejaLagos. Findings also revealed traffic signal and control devices, and terminal facilities as toptwo rated public transport facilities in good condition. The study revealed that public transport modes across the selected cities are operationally cracked as they are characterized by unprecedented challenges. The results of the Analysis of Variance established a statistical significant variation among the challenges mitigating sustainable public transport in the selected Nigerian cities. The study concludes and recommends, among other measures, fulladoption of appropriate mass transit options, particularly intra-city rail and the development of multimodal transport system.

Roadside Automobile Workshop (RAW) activities remain principal components of the informal sector in many Nigerian cities. Its emergence is attributed to the advent of automobiles and their use in easing urban mobility. Expectedly, unlike the formal autoworkshops, the RAW are located across the available spatial places where, motorists find solace to immediate respond to maintenance and other mechanical faults/malfunctions of their vehicles. However, the spatial locations and operations of RAW, along with the accompanying adverse effects, are recurring issues of concern in many cities in Nigeria. In this regard, this study assessed the socio-economic and environmental implications of RAW in the city of Ota, Nigeria. A cross-section survey research is adopted in this study, while 400 residents were sampled using multistage sampling technique. Major findings show that most of the residents have spent over four years in study area. It also revealed that increase loss of green area, noise pollution, and land vibration are the top-ranked environmental implications, while increase road traffic congestion, untrained technicians, and disruption of traffic flow are top-ranked economic implications. However, improve access to maintenance workshop, reduce vehicular breakdown on roads are top-ranked social implications of RAWs. Road infrastructure has been identified as a major factor for sustaining urban mobility and requires constant investment in the form of budgetary allocation for construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance. To this end, the study assesses government investment in road infrastructure in Kogi State, Nigeria and how it impacts urban mobility. The study adopted a mixed-method research design and deployed a questionnaire survey to elicit information from randomly selected 1,215 household heads. Also, data on the state’s budgetary allocation and road infrastructure expenditure from 2008-2018 were sourced. Findings shown that the year 2015 received the highest budgetary allocation for road infrastructure and there is a statistically significant trend difference in the development of road infrastructure in the area. Effective urban transportation no doubt serves as engine room and catalyst for driving national economic development. Significantly, the purpose of urban transport is to provide both passenger and freight mobility over specific parts of urban areas including cities, and its efficiency is characterized upon transporting effectively and achieving economies of scale. Hence, this study examined intra-city mobility and characterization in Lagos, Nigeria. The data was sourced from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data detailed the use of two sets of questionnaires administered to commuters and motorists. 182 copies of questionnaire were randomly administered to commuters, while 60 units of the questionnaire were purposively and conveniently administered to motorists. Descriptive and inferential techniques were used for data analysis. Major findings revealed obvious variations in socio-economic parameters of intra-city trip makers and factors influencing trip making. It was observed that journey to work, school, shopping cum business constituted the major trips characterizing in Lagos. Findings also revealed that high patronage priority was given to most used and preferred means due to vehicle travel speed, trip purpose, and availability than safety and comfortability of modal choice. Regression analysis result revealed that commuters’ modal choice and patronage is statistically influenced by operational attributes of mode (e.g. transit time, delay duration, safety, vehicle condition and transit fare etc.) at Sig. p=0.000 and F14165 15.667 which is greater than table value at 5% significant level. The study recommended among others the formulation and implementation of effective policy for urban transport activities; standardization of service operations and expansion of infrastructural facilities including the last-mile in the city.

Transportation no doubt remains a catalyst for all aspect of socio-economic and environmental development. Without its singular significance of mobility and accessibility for farmers, agricultural produce will rot on farms, while efforts in providing food would be fruitless. This paper assessed agricultural freight transportation in Saki area of Oyo State with a view of enhancing better product delivery mechanisms for farmers. It examined farmers’ socio-demographic; nature of farming and farm characteristics; and appraised the relationship between attributes of agricultural production and freight movement. Primary data employed consists of a questionnaire designed for farmers, structured interview for government officials complemented with personal field observations of agricultural freight transportation. 225 farmers were randomly selected for questionnaire administration. Major findings revealed that food crops, vegetables, fruits and poultry products are in persistent motion in the study area and that agricultural freight is a neglected sector with significant consequences on the access to cheap and affordable urban wellbeing. Findings also revealed that agricultural freight transportation within the study is very poor and uneconomical, as this depletes farmers’ profit-making. Globally, efficient intercity public transport relies on well-designed and high-quality terminal facilities and services to enhance accessibility, mobility, and safety for passengers and freight. Despite governmental efforts, bus terminals in Nigerian urban areas are becoming hotspots for unregulated activities and traffic chaos. In response, this study investigates users' satisfaction with Lagos State's intercity bus terminal quality, analysing socio-economic profiles, satisfaction levels with quality of terminal facilities (QoTF) and services (QoTS), and challenges impacting terminal operations. Using a cross-sectional survey, 200 questionnaires were distributed to terminal users, employing a multistage sampling technique. Descriptive (weighted mean analysis) and inferential (multiple linear regression [MLR] analysis) statistics were employed for data analysis. Results indicate that the majority of respondents are male, aged below 40, and permanent terminal users. Satisfaction is noted with 13 out of 24 parameters of QoTF, with top-ranking parameters including parking space, restaurant facilities, and waste disposal facilities. However, dissatisfaction is expressed with 8 out of 14 parameters of QoTS. Least-satisfied QoTS parameters include staff attitudes, passenger safety, and bus service reliability. Top-rated challenges affecting terminal operations are security concerns, sanitation facility deficiencies and insufficient passenger amenities. MLR analysis indicates a significant influence of terminal facilities on overall service satisfaction (F= 2.899, p= 0.000 <0.05). In conclusion, enhancing both terminal facilities and services is crucial for efficient operations in Lagos State's bus terminals. This study examines viewers' characteristics and operational dynamics of football viewing centres (FVCs) in Agege, Lagos Megacity, Nigeria. It anchors on the "theory of happiness" and the microeconomic vitality of FVCs using a mixed-methods approach. The results of the descriptive and inferential statistics revealed that most viewers can afford subscriptions for digital TV in their homes, yet patronize the FVCs. Factors attributed to patronage are happiness, excitement, and other social opportunities, with some perspectives of leisure and microeconomic vitality benefits. Finally, the study suggests a new policy direction to mitigate the negative effects of unplanned areas resulting in the proliferation of FVCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Efficient transportation infrastructure is pivotal for the seamless functioning of global cities, with coastal cities facing unique challenges due to environmental peculiarities. This study delves into how Lagos' environmental peculiarities impact transportation infrastructure performance, shedding light on both positive and negative implications. A comprehensive survey involving 1284 residents within Lagos Metropolis was conducted using multistage sampling techniques. A combination of descriptive (percentage and mean-weighted analysis) and inferential (Fisher's exact test and Phi Cramer's V Test) statistics was adopted for data analysis. Major findings revealed that the environmental peculiarities in Lagos foster the use of multimodal infrastructure options and concurrently exert adverse effects on various facets of transportation infrastructure performance, including travel cost, commuting time, fare charges, wear and tear of infrastructure, and the overall cost of maintenance and repairs. The results of the Fisher's exact test underscore the undeniable impact of Lagos' environmental peculiarities on transportation infrastructure performance (p = 0.000 < 0.05). This study concludes that high water tables, as a representative environmental peculiarity, substantially influence transportation infrastructure performance, shaping the mobility needs of residents. In light of these findings, the study advocates for the full implementation of sustainable infrastructure solutions. Recommendations include establishing robust drainage systems, incorporating corrosion-resistant materials, and adopting innovative technologies to mitigate the repercussions of rising sea levels on critical transportation infrastructure, enhancing its resilience in the face of environmental challenges. Construction and demolition waste CDW is debris from construction or destruction of a construction that are no longer useful, which has to be carefully disposed to avoid or minimize environmental hazards and prevent infliction of injuries to the people in and around the environment where such exercise takes place. The massive numbers of activities within the construction industry over the last few years continue to increase the generation of construction and demolition wastes at both macro and micro scale with unorganized management practices among contractors. Hence, the need to examine the practices of CDW management in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted for this study. A snowball sampling technique was used to administer 200 copies of a questionnaire to contractors within the Lagos Metropolitan Area. Major findings revealed that most of the respondents are male (94%) and have over 15 years of professional working experience (76%). The top-ranked CDW in the study area are concrete with steel, glass, and broken tiles. Furthermore, the study revealed that the high cost of waste evacuation, inadequate adaptive disposal vehicles, poor waste logistics, quantity of waste, and poor information are the topranked challenges of CDW management practices in Lagos Metropolis. Findings also revealed that increasing competitiveness in the construction industry, increasing profit maximization, reducing environmental degradation, reducing the cost of waste disposal, and increasing employment opportunities are among the top-ranked prospects of CDW management practice. The result of the ANOVA revealed a significant variation among the challenges of CDW management practices in Lagos Metropolis (F= 956.137, p= 0.000 < 0.05). The study concluded and recommended the full adoption of the carrot-and-stick approach to achieving effective CDW management practices in the Lagos Metropolis and other cities in Nigeria. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating socio-economic consequences for millions of people, households and communities worldwide. Towards containing the spread of the pandemic, lockdown measures were imposed by various governments with Palliative Care Deliveries (PCD) offered to their citizenry. Thus, this study examined COVID-19-related socio-economic impacts and PCD during the lockdown in Nigeria. Convenience accidental sampling was used to administer a questionnaire on residents through an online/electronic survey, of which 1232 internet users participated. Data collected were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Our study revealed the most devastating socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria, and ranked the most essential needs during the lockdown. We concluded that palliative care relief services could not achieve their intended goals due to the observed logistics challenges; hence, the study recommended among others, the adoption of best logistics principles for PCD during the lockdown. Although a significant proportion of road hazards and their associated health risks in Nigeria involve motorcycles, relatively little research explores whether commercial motorcyclists have unique seasonal accident experiences. This article analyses survey data from 241 commercial motorcyclists in selected terminals in Ifo, Nigeria, to explore how road hazards and health risks experienced differ from one season to another. The study established that seasonality of motorcycle hazards and health risks cannot be assumed across the terminals and routes as some were dominant in either rainy or dry seasons or both. In particular, most motorcycle hazards and health risks were less likely caused by seasonal variation but by human errors and road conditions. The results underscore the importance of collecting commercial motorcyclists' perceptual data because many experience hazards and health risks that are burdensome to them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

That there is a strong degree of affinity between efficient transport service delivery and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is not an understatement in this century. However, the persistent traffic dilemma in Nigerian cities including Ibadan city undermines the importance of transportation to the socio-economic affluence of the country. Despite the continuous efforts of the government in road expansion and construction, the menace of traffic bottlenecks in Ibadan city is alarming and the traffic situations still recorded a high level of dismal performance. It is based on the foregoing that this study examined the traffic situations in Ibadan city and demonstrated strategies towards improved intra-city traffic flow in the city through the use of ICT-based traffic management system. 400 road users were sampled randomly along seven stratified traffic corridors in Ibadan. Data were analysed descriptively and inferentially. Major findings revealed that the majority of the road users are commuters (50%), between 31-40 years (57.5%) and actively engaged in productive activities (over 70%). The study also revealed major ranked traffic challenges and factors contributing to traffic challenges in the city. Again, epileptic electricity supply, poor funding, absence of reliable traffic facilities and data, poor internet facilities and cost-effectiveness of ICT facilities are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively as major constraints of ICT-based traffic management in Ibadan. Meanwhile, improved traffic management system, reduced congestion, improved traffic safety, sustainable urban transport operation and reduced traffic incidence are the major ranked prospect of ICTbased traffic management. Based on the findings, adequate integration of ITS/ICT mechanisms to the urban transport system in Ibadan city and cities with similar issues was strongly recommended towards enhancing the efficient and effective performance of transport infrastructural facilities and services delivery. Rural areas are of utmost importance to the socio-economic and industrial growth of developing economy. The need to optimise rural transport services becomes indispensable to checkmate its increasing depopulation and increase socio-economic sustainability. It is on this basis that this study appraised rural transport services in Nigeria. The paper examined socio-economic profile and trip characterization of residents; analysed the characteristics of routes and vehicles' used for rural transport services; and appraised the factors that determine the quality of rural transport services. 120 copies of questionnaires were administered through systematic random sampling for residents in Oyedeji, Lagun and Akitiko in Oyo State, Nigeria. Both descriptive and inferential (Regression) statistics were used for data analysis. Findings revealed that over 60% of the residents engaged in agricultural related activities and mostly rely on para-transit means, particularly motorcycles (67%) for commuting. Unfortunately, most of the bituminous rural-urban roads are in poor condition (62.5%) and characterized by rickety vehicles (63.3%). The study concludes that the ruralurban trip pattern is restricted to less than 5km daily movement and characterized by quagmire in both passenger and freight movements due to the poor attention being accorded to rural transport infrastructural facilities. The regression analysis result shows a significant relationship between socioeconomic variable (income) and the quality of rural transport services (p=0.000 < 0.05). Aside from the persistent building collapse, acute flood disaster and ocean surge which are known as regular characteristics of Lagos, Nigeria, the menace and ugly incidence of heavy-duty trucks and articulated vehicle operation has now joined the league of contemporary issues affecting Lagosians with huge consequences on socio-economic development and sustainability of Lagos. Based on this backdrop, this study examined the risks and disaster of heavy-duty trucks and articulated vehicles in Lagos, Nigeria with the view to proffering measures to tame the operations of the moving monsters. Data for this study were mainly from the use of questionnaire administration and complemented by the Truck Road Traffic Crashes data retrieved from the Federal Road Safety Corps archive. 150 copies of questionnaire were purposively and conveniently administered on truck drivers found along five (5) major accident-prone traffic corridors in the study area. Obtained information were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (linear regression) techniques. Major findings revealed that majority of the truck drivers were male (85%), aged between 25-35 years (43%) and has 5-10 years driving experience. Findings also show that 60% of the disaster-related causal factors were ranked above Mean Index Value of 2.61, with road-related problems (3.50), drunk driving (3.25) and tailgating (3.21) were ranked first, second and third factors. Regression results revealed that incidence of truckrelated disaster statistically influences the number of casualties involved (F1/936.177, p= 0.000 < 0.05). Meanwhile, loss of life, vehicle, investment and time, displacement of population, environmental degradation among others were ranked very-high impact of risk and disaster of truck operation. The study recommends among others, strong policy implementation strategies to cater for prevention, preparedness, recovery and response mechanisms to address disaster related to transport operation in Nigerian cities. Efficiency of seaport is a catalyst for economic affluence of any nation. This study examined productivity level of Apapa port in pre and post concession periods, factors responsible for the productivity and efficiency in the port, and established difference in cargo throughput, turn-around time and berth occupancy. Hundred (100) questionnaires were purposively administered to Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) officials in the study area. Socio-economic characteristics of respondents and perceptions on level of efficiency, productivity and infrastructural development in the two periods were presented descriptively. Student't' test was used to measure difference in cargo throughput, turn-around time and berth occupancy. Findings revealed positive changes in infrastructural development, efficiency and productivity in post concession than pre concession periods of Apapa port. The analyses of cargo throughput, turn-around time and berth occupancy showed significant difference in cargo throughput (t = 2.39, P value < 0.05), turn-around time (t = 2.97, P value < 0.05) and berth occupancy (t = 2.68, P value < 0.05) between these periods. Study recommends proper implementation and strict adherence to existing port policies to avoid operational delays, increase in infrastructural development like rail/road (intermodal) connectivity which will enhance improve productivity of Apapa port and ports with similar problems. Transportation is a significance source of greenhouse gases (GHG). Nevertheless, its impacts on environment and human health has increasingly attracted attentions in both developed and developing countries. However, studies on transportation and climate change have neglected determinants of household vehicle acquisition and use. In this study, these factors were examined with the view to encourage the use of public transport in Lagos, Nigeria. Stratified and purposive sampling technique were used to administer 784 questionnaire to households in 15 residential districts (high, medium and low density). Also, within the residential districts, informal interviews were conducted in selected mechanical workshops. Forty-nine variables from data collected were analysed using correlation and multiple regression. Nine variables (income ICM, household-size HSZ, cost of vehicle CSTVC, cost of trips CTRP, cost of maintenance CSMAT, distance to destination DTDS, cost of fuelling CTFLG, years of driving experience YRDRV and frequency of trips FRTRP) were statistically significant (P<0.05). 63.5% of variation in the determinants of acquisition and use of household private vehicles is accounted for by 16 explanatory variables. Household income contributed the highest (12.1%), followed by Household size (7.1%). Cost of registration of Vehicle (CREGV) has the lowest contribution of 0.2% to the coefficient of explanation. ICM, HSZ, DPTS, AGV, TMTV, CTRP, DTDS, YRDRV and FRTRP have positive coefficients while CSTVC, CREGV, CSMAT, RESDN, CTSPRT, and CTFLG have negative coefficients. Thus, the propensity to acquire and use private vehicles by different household's increases with increase in income, distance travel, household-size, cost of trip, and frequency of trips.
